Well, you've read the notes, you know all there is to know about the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be back in the saddle soon and makin' their way across the prairie.

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

Ah, Tuesday night shows...  'nuff said.

;)

However, our old drummer, Dave Roth, stopped by.  He took a night off from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  It's always nice seeing Dave.  And it's always nice looking at Dave.

DR Danise - I have looked at the music you sent.  I just can't seem to get it to print out.  My brother reset some of the setting for the network here at the house, and I can't seem to access the printer any longer.  ???  *And my personal printer is old, and doesn't have a USB connection - which is the only way I can connect to my iBook.  So...  I'll see what I can do this week.

Topic of the Day -

I have to say that the mid-80s were a bad fashion period for me mainly because the fashion in the mid-80s was sort of questionable to begin with.  It really wasn't bad, but it really wasn't good either.

Going to a private high school, the main fashion decisions I had to worry about on a daily basis were: shirt - white or blue?; pants - gray or blue?  I've never been that adventurous when it's come to clothes, and the few times that I have tried to be "hip"... Well, those clothes never made it out of the house after I looked at myself in the mirror.

Looking back through my baby albums and later, I'd have to say my Mom had/has very good taste in clothes.  She never dressed me and my brothers in anything too far out.  I think the fact that my Dad was in the Coast Guard may have also influenced her "conservative" clothing choices for her four boys.

I suppose it's too late to request BK bring back a piece of Joe Allen coconut cream pie...God, it was so good when they were out here.

Wasn't the 70's the worst fashion period for everyone around in those days.  It certainly was for me.  I had the bell-bottoms, the high heel shoes, the wide, long collars.  I confess to actually loving the scarves in lieu of neckties.  I never succumbed to the leisure suit even though my mother gave me a god-awful pale blue one once for my birthday.

My favourite shirt of the period was a black and white shirt with pictures of movie-stars from the thirties and forties.

DR Pogue - If you still have that shirt, you could probably get around $100 if not more for it at "vintage" clothing store.

*Of course, some of today's fashion totally bewilders me in a different sense.  Out magazine had a feature on T-shirts a couple of issues ago.  It was sort of "fascinating".  Everything from a plain Hanes crew-neck for  around $6.00 to a $30 Abercrombie & Fitch one to a plain, red Dolce & Gabanna t-shirt for $450.  $450 for a plain, red, cotton t-shirt?!?!?!?

A new location of The Denim Bar just opened up here in DC.  It's a neat premise.  The staff is trained as to proper fit, proper look, etc. for the various types of clientele that come into their store.  They measure you, then start bringing you various jeans to try on.  Different designers, different cuts, different fits.  And, apparently, the staff will also "warn" you which styles you should stay away from.  However, the average price of a pair of jeans there is supposedly around the $125 range.  Yikes!  And I had no idea that Levi's had jumped on the high-end jean bandwagon - I didn't realize they were making jeans priced over $40 now!

As for the topic of the day...I've pretty much been a jeans-and-plain-shirt guy.  I never tried to be "in fashion," so I think I was spared (for the most part) any "worst" fashion period.  However, 20 years ago when I was in a barbershop chorus, the outfits that they had were ridiculous!  The suit was a blue plaid kind of fabric with sequins all around the edge of the jacket...from the bottom of the jacket edge to the lapel and around the collar.  Fortunately, I only had to wear that suit for a year.  They got tuxes after that.  I was only in the group for another year before I went away to college and never re-joined the group after I graduated.

Jose, sad to say, but I wore that shirt until the collars and cuffs frayed and the elbows ripped open.  I have some vague memory of keeping it for the unusual pattern of the cloth and it wouldn't surprise me if it's battered carcass is lurking around in some box somewhere in this house, but I probably pitched it at some point.

And speaking of "worst fashion periods"...last night, the local NBC affiliate did a news segment about a Bremerton, Washington family who bought a Bratz Babyz doll for their 3-year old.  The thing is that the doll's normal outfit includes a see-through thong!!  For the segment, they interviewed the Krause family.  The on-line article HERE (http://www.king5.com/topstories/stories/NW_052405SRKbratzKC.2a9a20e84.html) (you have to register, but I've never gotten any e-mails from them) includes a video clip.  But here's part of the article.  The mother is quoted first:

Quote
"If it had full panty hose on it, it wouldn't have bothered me that much, but it was the fact they put a see-through thong on the girl that really blew my mind," said Robin Krause.

That's not a wardrobe malfunction. That's how the doll the Krauses' daughter got as a gift comes right out of the box.

The Krauses aren't the first family to complain and this isn't the first time this kind of report has been done.

But the company may be bending. "They sent me back an e-mail. They were aware of the wardrobe and were in the process of making revisions to it," said Brandon Krause. The e-mail said the company is changing the doll's underwear.

Earlier this month, the company's president told a Pittsburgh newspaper: "Unfortunately, it is the polluted mind of some adults who 'see sex' in everything. If you ask the kids - and we have - what do they think of Bratz, they will tell you they are beautiful, inspirational and multiethnic."

What the Krauses say is no one asked them - the parents. "I don't think we need sex in our children's toys," said Krause.

MGA Entertainment in its e-mail to the Krauses said it has no schedule for when the updated dolls will hit the shelves.

For those who already have a Bratz Babyz, MGA says it will send out replacement underwear to those who feel their Bratz Babyz are showing a little too much.

And people wonder why or how (in another segment in the same newscast) 14-16 year old girls are Selling Sex for Meth (http://www.king5.com/topstories/stories/NW_052405WABmethforsexKC.2a9bbf738.html).  This is no joke! :o

So glad to have Tom back and OzDerek and Larry. Our own Three Musketeers.

Of course, the worst fashion period for me was the 70s. I permed my hair, grew a beard and wore some of the ugliest clothes in creation. I also had a leisure suit for about 5 minutes. There was a moment in the very late 60s when I had a Nehru jacket which was popular for even less time than the leisure suit. I also had a large ugly pendant on a chain designed to be worn with the Nehru jacket in place of a tie. I was all of 16 and thought back then that it looked cool.

I have no pictures and even if I did I would require copious amounts of money before I posted them here.

I agree!  Dropping several Jule Styne songs was ridiculous, and I loathed the SWAN LAKE parody; in 1916 or so, ballet was not so popular, and Private Schwartz sets it square in WWI.

Good morning, all!   Trying to maintain a semblence of my usual schedule while keeping up with all the post-surgery requirements has me very fatigued.  I'm quite tired today.  This morning, I have to tackle the BABES IN TOYLAND project for the first time since last Saturday, and I'm not looking forward to my downtown trek.

The 70s have it!  I was tie-dyeing everything I owned, and I had these huge clown shoes, and -worse and worse! - a liesure suit in a pale tan which I wore with a light blue shirt and a huge tie.  It was a bad period for clothing and hair, only the movies, theatre, and some of the music seem great to me now.  My hair started thinning in the late 70s, but I wore it from around 1971-1976 very long, usually in a ponytail.  What the hell were we thinking?  After seeing Phil Spector's photo yesterday, I'm so grateful that I moved on!

Another 70's fashion victim here.  I wouldn't say that I went through any extended periods of dressing badly--it was mostly a mistake here and there.  During high school, I was obsessive about wearing Nik-Nik shirts.  Nik-Niks were button down dress shirts with wild patterns that were made of 100% rayon.  Their colors never faded, but they retained any odor they came in contact with and were extremely susceptible to heat.  Even though I never smoked, each shirt eventually gained a cigarette burn hole courtesy of smoking friends and strangers.

Other bad choices:

For some reason when I was in college, every guy in New Jersey started wearing their sweatpants in winter with the legs pulled up above their calves.  I did likewise.

For a time in college, I wore a deerstalker.  I got mixed messages on this one--some people told me I looked cool, other said I looked like a loon.  But I was a budding theatre major, so I stuck with the affectation.

A near calamity:  I remember on a shopping trip with my mom to Philly seeing a pair of Robin Hood-like leather boots in a shoe store window.  I begged my mom to buy them for me.  She said no.

Unless I was wearing a suit, I pretty much went commando from my high school years up until my mid 20s.  It was more of a convienient way of cutting down on laundry than anything else.

I once had a streak of cobalt blue dyed into my hair a la Mike Score from A Flock of Seagulls.  Now that was cool!

The photo I have of myself that even my husband has never seen is a church group (confirmation class) when I was about 13 or 14.  All the other girls wore pastel party dresses (which look white in the B&W photo), but I insisted that my mother make my dress out of white fabric with BIG navy blue polka dots.  Perfect illustration of the saying, "Sticking out like a sore thumb."

A hearty welcome back to Tomofoz.  Feel better vibes to you (and yes, to you too, DR Elmoore.)

Yes, the 70s were a fashion catastrophe for all of us, no matter our ages at the time.  I do remember Nik-Nik shirts, in all of their qiana glory.  Yes, my brother Carl (yes, I have another brother, even though we do not speak) wore a Nehru suit, with a medallion, to  DR Jay's Bar Mitzvah (the temple service; not the reception). Yes, we wore crushed velvet tuxedoes to Carl's Bar Mitzvah reception -- WITH ruffled shirts!  Yes, we had platform shoes.  Yes, we wore double knits.

And to all of that I say....yecchh!

I watched Idol last night.  Wasn't crazy about any of the performances, although i preferred the last song each sang.

It really bugged me that Simon proclaimed that "carrie you've done enough to win".  I believe that because of that she will win (although I always thought she was going to win anyhow).  I guess I want Bo to win, although I'm not crazy about either of them.

Weird how last week the judges couldn't say enough about Bo.

I would be interested to hear who each judge thinks should win.  It definitely seems like Paula prefers Bo, and Simon prefers Carrie.

I also watched Rob and Amber's wedding and I really liked it.  They spent a lot of time focusing on the preparations (which I thought were interesting).  And as a surprise Rob had a house built for her (and had his friends and family paint it and arrange the furniture he bought). It looked incredible.

Worst fashion period was defnitely the mid-70s. Double knit polyester pants in the wildest, most god-awful patterns were the rage, and I had several pairs of them in checks, snake prints, electric blues and greens. And it was VERY difficult to find any shoes for men that didn't have some kind of platform and high heels. A really ghastly time for men's clothes.

I couldn't agree more. My favorite song in the FUNNY GIRL score, even more than the more famous "People" and the lilting "I Want To Be Seen With You."

Frankly, when the movie came out, I was VERY disappopinted that "My Man" was used instead of "The Music That Makes Me Dance."

I dunno, after watching IDOL this morning, Carrie sounded flat in pitch to me on all of her songs, and she was clearly the more nervous of the two. I thought Bo had done enough to win, especially after the sensational songs from last week. He made all three of his songs, even that first "Long, Long Road" that none of the judges liked, palatable to me, and Carrie didn't.

Again, the lines for Bo in my section of the country were jammed all night long, and Carrie's weren't at all.

As much as I like both "People" (even with its rather inane verse), AND "The Music that Makes Me Dance,"  I am going to disagree with you both.  I think "My Man" is a brilliant ending for the film, both cinematically and musically.

What does get my goat, however, is that they replaced the GLORIOUS "Who Are You Now?" with a rather sad attempt at a title song, just to get a nomination.  Granted, they got the nomination, but they lost a beautiful song in the process.

Barbra sang "My Man" in a more complete and touching version (though similar to the film) on MY NAME IS BARBRA, so seeing/hearing it at the end of FUNNY GIRL was anticlimactic for me. I knew JUST what she was going to do with it, and there were no surprises.

She improvised new notes for "People" in the film version, and I would have been interested to see what she would have done with "Music" four years after introducing it. She did nothing with "My Man" that she hadn't done before.

I agree with DR Stuart.  And, things she had never done with it before:

-- She brought emotional truth to the opening notes
-- She was far more dramatic in this rendition than any previous recording, and sang with more power
-- She did it in a black dress against a black backdrop to drop-dead stunning effect.

I think it one of the most magnificent, gutwrenching finales to a film I've ever seen.

But that's just me....

Saddle Shoes (see the top of the screen-well forget that, now they are gone, I guess cause I mentioned them)! I know we're not supposed to mention certain things here, but I still have a pair of saddle shoes. I never wore them as a child nor during my "fashion challenged" periods but I do have a pair which I wear sometimes during the summer months when I put on my grey slacks (the shoes are black and white). They complement the slacks very well.

I had a few paisley shirts during the 1970s when I was a kid...polyester, even! And it the 80s a lot of Bugle Boy, Ocean Pacific, Shah Safari, etc.

It wasn't pretty.

And we won't even get into what my hair looked like....especially when I went through my brief punk rock period.

In 1974 (5th grade) I did get a nifty t-shirt with the Marx Bros. on it.

The thing was it was supposed to be a secret.  And also they originally had like 500-600 friends/family that they wanted to bring.  But the wedding planner wanted around 250. So they had to cut a lot of people who they knew. So I doubt they were going to ask anyone they weren't really close to.

I'm not sure if I will watch Idol or Lost/Alias.  I know everyone will be talking about Lost tomorrow.  And that most of the Idol show will be filler.  But I find I need to concentrate a lot more on the ABC shows!  So I guess I'll see what I feel like tonight.

I just checked the ratings for last night, and I was surprised to find that the Romber wedding finished second in its timeslot for both hours it was broadcast. It didn't have blockbuster ratings, didn't quite match the ratings for a regular episode of THE AMAZING RACE, for example, but it did far more respectably than I would have ever thought.

It averaged a 6.8 rating/10 share finishing well behind HOUSE at 9 p.m. and LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT at 10, but it still trumped everything else broadcast during those two hours including the last hour of THE CONTENDER and the Donald Trump made-forTV biopic on ABC.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the two of them fronting reality-based shows on either CBS or some cable channels in the future with ratings like that. Obviously, there are plenty of people interested in them.

I suppose it's too late to request BK bring back a piece of Joe Allen coconut cream pie...God, it was so good when they were out here.
It probably would have been confiscated at the airport, under the heading of "dangerous substances," never to be seen again without a security guard hovering over it armed with a fork.

I don't have MR BK's flight number so I can't track him.

Yes, oh yes, the 1970's - starting with bell bottoms and going through leisure suits to end with the DISCO look.  Yes, fashion was never uglier.  And we all thought we looked so nice and hip.

Whew!

And starting next week, I can wear my white bucks.  But only until Labor Day, of course.

They look quite fetching with my seersucker pants.  And sometimes even with a pair of jeans.

At the risk of mortification - but in the interest of encouraging more of the same (DR CP has taken the lead, and I will follow).

I post here a photograph of me in a sedate moment from 1977.   No real excess here with the exception of the braided seam on the pants and the knit tie....and the glasses....and what was - even then - left of my hair.   :P

I agree!  Dropping several Jule Styne songs was ridiculous, and I loathed the SWAN LAKE parody; in 1916 or so, ballet was not so popular, and Private Schwartz sets it square in WWI.
That Funny Girl was released in 1968 didn't do the Private Schwartz number any favors, since that was the height of the Viet Nam war and anything resembling pro-military would have been frowned upon.  See, even back then Barbs was too politically correct for her own good!

I, too, was a fashion disaster back in the late '70s, but for a totally different reason.

Up through college, my mother was still picking out my clothes for me.  After that, I couldn't really afford to get new clothes, so I kept wearing what I had.  I was so un-stylish that there were lesbians who wanted to take me shopping for a makeover.

No, really.  That's the sort of think you cannot make up.

Fortunately, by the time I could afford to buy my own clothes, my sense of fashion had gone off in it's own direction.  I tend to wear the same simple clothes year in year out, nothing pretentious, just classic lines.

Der Brucer, on the other hand, did succumb to the disco era clothing.  He used to own several leisure suits, with the attendant shirts and shoes.  He still had them when we met, although he wasn't so brave as to wear them any more.  They were hanging in storage bags in the garage, on the chance that they might come back in style some day.

So far, we've been lucky and they haven't.  We left them all in Long Beach when we moved, anyway.  A good thing, too; if we'd brought them with us we'd have been arrested for crimes against nature in some of the states we drove through.

1986 Six million Americans participate in ‘Hand Across America’ by holding hands and singing across 4,150 miles of road in support of the hungry and homeless.

Believe it or not, it was just nineteen years ago today, in 1986, that "Hands Across America" was held.

Six million Americans held hands in a chain crossing the continental United States, in support of the hungry and homeless.  They sang, too.

Of course, some of that handholding was more symbolic than actual.  With 4,150 miles to cross, there were stretches where the participants were separated by several yards.  Just getting people to these sparse areas took a lot of doing (and cost a lot).  Also, in crossing the deserts, there was a problem with the heat.

I'm pretty sure any idea of making this an annual event was quickly dropped.

I actually quite liked the bellbottomed look it it was done properly, you know the ones that were tight from the waist to the knee and then gradually got to the width of your foot at the hem, so you could wear them with your 5 inch heels (which would be completely covered of course and the hems must barely brush the ground!!) and make your legs look terribly long.....

Of course I remember the 70's fondly as I was still sporting a fulling funtional thyroid gland and my weight never went over 105 lbs, I had blonde hair that reached my waist and I hadn't yet succumbed to the eye issues that terminated my use of contacts

I was not offended, I just forgot to comment in catching up to the posts. It is ridiculous the stuff that is out here for children these days and the way some of the parents allow their kids to dress.

Last night  Vixter's  Middle School held the 6th grade Spring  Concert, that means the kids were all 11 or 12 years old... some of the girls were sporting miniskirts, high stiletto heels and enough makeup and jewely to outfit the  cast of "La Cage ".     Ridiculous!

On a more personal note...

For several months now, the lot next door has sat empty.  Literally empty, since the owner cleared it of all the brush and trees from one corner to the other.  Why anyone would buy a lot in the middle of the woods, just to get rid of the woods, is beyond the collective imaginations of der Brucer and myself, and we've pretty good imaginations.

Apparently, good imaginations, but not bad ones.

The lot has been staked, and lines painted on the ground in bright brick orange.  The owners are going to be putting up a McMansion.  Tons of floorspace, with probably no archetectural connection to the surrounding landscape or other houses.  Heck, most of the residents here are living in doublewides, duded up if they're year-round residents or can afford it, left fairly ordinary if they are summer homes.

This McMansion is going to be looking over most of our back yard.

And I'll bet they're gonna complain every time the dogs go into the back yard to do their business.

Sh*t.

There's lots of this kind of building going on in Southern Delaware, mostly catering to people from DC who have lots of money to throw around and don't really care about the community they're moving into.  Their main homes are in the Metro areas, this is their place to get away from everything.  They don't care about what the massive building is doing to the infrastructure...and neither to the people living on the western side of Sussex county, who are glad to have the additional tax dollars coming in as long as the political power stays with them, instead of moving to the beaches.

Result?  We're already way behind on building the schools we will need, the fire and police services, the sewage and trash control...hospitals are doing fine, but that's more of a private enterprise than publicly supported.  Highway One is regularly a parking lot on summer weekends, and it is only going to get more crowded.

On the more immediate level, I doubt that planting bushes will give us much privacy, not when the house next door will tower over our back yard by two floors.

With our luck, the new neighbors will also be complaining about the noisy geese and other birds that fly overhead, while playing their stereophonic megablasters at top volume without any insulation at all hours of the night.

Congrat to your son, DR Ginny!

Just out of curiosity, what does "Hands Across America" mean to today's college students?

At the time he wrote it, he was VERY stressed and decided that there were bigger problems in the world than the ones he was dealing with at that moment.

Thank you, ALL, for your congratulatory comments!

I honestly don't think I have any pictures from those years other than the yearbook pictures made at my school that teachers were forced to have taken, and I don't think you can see much in that as they're mostly facial shots.

I didn't really take any pictures until the recent advent of digital photography.

We have had the most pleasant last two days with nippy temperatures that don't get out of the low 70s during the day and a nice breeze. Sheer heaven. I wish this kind of weather would hang around for months instead of just a few days in the spring and a few weeks in the fall.

DRRonPuliam, I like your beard as well.  Who's  the lady in the photo?

The lady in the photo is named Cathy.  I don't recall her last name.

Odd thing:  I was in the Navy, but I was assigned (1973-75) to an Army post in northern Italy...in Vicenza, home of the great architect Andrea Palladio.  Vicenza was the network headquarters for Armed Forces Radio in Italy.  As the Navy had a strong presence in Naples and Sigonella, it provided two bodies to the radio station.  The Air Force also had two bodies there.  The Army had six.  As a single sailor "detached" from Naples, I was taken care of by the Headquarters company, which consisted of Admin types, payroll clerks, etc.  Cathy was a payroll clerk as were most of my Army friends at that time.  I hung out with them ALL the time and they were great folks to have fun with, go skiing with -- we had a lot of very inexpensive ski weekends which were hosted by Headquarters company -- $24 for 2 nights, 3 days, including breakfast/dinner and hotel room at key spots in the Italian alps (the Dolomites).

I spent Thanksgiving 1973 in London on a Headquarters company four-day jaunt -- $125 per person included airfare, first-class hotel (three nights), and breakfast.  Our hotel bordered Hyde Park (opposite side from the Albert Memorial).  We were on the side where folks set up easels, art exhibits and their soapboxes.

My best friend and her husband were both in the Airforce and they were stationed in Italy during the early to mid 80's.  They told me wonderful stories about skiing in the Alps and trips to Venice, and the old farmhouse she and her husband rented and lived in.  She also took several jaunts to Germany, France and England

I just saw this story

Quote
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Jennifer Wilbanks, the bride-to-be who staged her disappearance, was indicted Wednesday for allegedly filing a false police report claiming she had been kidnapped, charges that could mean up to six years in prison.

A grand jury indicted her on one count of making a false police report, a misdemeanor, and one count of false statement, a felony. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, said Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter. The other count carries a penalty of up to a year.

“We believe this is a reasonable next step in the case. We believe the grand jury made the right decision,” Porter said.

“At some point you just can’t lie to the police,” he added.

No settlement deal
Wilbanks’ family had been in negotiations with Porter over a possible settlement, but Porter said earlier that no agreement had been reached.

Wilbanks, 32, disappeared from her Duluth home on April 26 after claiming that she was going for a jog.

While Georgia authorities looked for her, the woman traveled to Las Vegas by bus and then to Albuquerque, N.M. There, she called authorities with a story about having been abducted and sexually assaulted.

But under questioning, she recanted and said she fled Georgia because of unspecified personal issues. She returned to Georgia on April 30, the day she was to have been married in a lavish ceremony with 600 guests.

Massive search
Wilbanks’ lawyer has said she doesn’t think her client should be charged with a crime.

Her disappearance prompted a massive search and nationwide publicity. City, county and state officials spent about $50,000 looking for her.

Several state and county agencies already said they will not ask her to reimburse them for a total of $10,000 spent in additional search costs. But the city of Duluth still is seeking repayment of about $40,000 and Mayor Shirley Lassetter said her city attorney has been in negotiations with Wilbanks’ attorney, Lydia Sartain.

Sartain has said she does not think Wilbanks committed a crime in Gwinnett County. Authorities in Albuquerque have already said they will not charge Wilbanks.

“The citizens of the county will be ill-served by an attempted prosecution,” Sartain said.

Sartain did not immediately return a phone call or e-mail seeking comment on Wednesday.

Quote
NEWHALL, Calif. - A woman was arrested after the California Highway Patrol officer who pulled her car over found nine people crammed inside, including two children in the trunk.

“I have never heard of this,” said Officer Wendy Hahn. “There was no room left in the car, so she puts two of the kids in the trunk. We’re trying to get people to buckle up, and this is what we find.”

Lavern Dunlap, 35, of Glendora, was pulled over about 8 p.m. Friday after another driver reported seeing a woman closing the trunk of her Toyota Corolla with two children inside as the vehicle sat parked on a shoulder.

Dunlap told the officer she was heading to her sister’s house in Palmdale, about a 60-mile trip.

The officer discovered a 15-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl in the trunk, four children in the back seat, an adult in the front passenger seat with a child on her lap and Dunlap behind the wheel. No one was wearing a seat belt, she said.

Dunlap was booked on suspicion of child cruelty and was released. She is scheduled to appear next month in court.

Hey BK...watch out when you take your next little  dip in the pool, you may have company

Quote
LOS ANGELES - A 140-pound bear wandered into a suburban neighborhood and took a dip in a swimming pool before being tranquilized and returned to the wild.

The female bear ambled into the San Fernando Valley’s Porter Ranch area shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, bumping into doors and windows before taking a few splashes in a backyard pool, fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Homeowner Maryam Salahael pulled her children out of the pool when the bear showed up, and she called 911.

“My dog began barking very loudly. I went to see what’s going on. I see a bear in my backyard,” Salahael told KTTV-TV.

Authorities cordoned off the area as wildlife officials tranquilized the bear, said Cindy Wood of the California Department of Fish and Game. The animal was then released into the Santa Susana Mountains.

“It looks like it’s possibly in heat,” Wood said. “She probably just made a wrong turn and ended up in a neighborhood. She belongs up in the hills and that’s where she lives.”

FOREMAN, Ark. -
Jeff Foran suffered trauma to his nose, eyes and chin after jumping from a car traveling 55-60 mph. Authorities said he was trying to retrieve a cigarette blown out of the passenger-side window.

Foran, 38, took the leap Saturday night, state police Trooper Jamie Gravier said.

The driver of the car, Jerry Glenn Nelson, said Foran had asked him earlier in the evening to be a designated driver after a night of drinking.

"Nelson said Foran was smoking a cigarette when it blew out the window and Foran jumped out the window to retrieve the cigarette. Nelson said he was driving between 55 and 60 mph when Foran jumped out," the trooper said.

Gravier added: “If anything could make him stop smoking, this should be it. The man is lucky to be alive.”

Evening all!  A busy day here at HHW, so much to comment on!

Glad you made it home safe, BK.  I’m also glad you had a very productive trip.  I would like to know if it might be possible that you might be joining us in NYC for the October gathering.  That would be great!

So are you going to dish the dish?

Wonderful photos!  Always good to “see” everyone.  I was very glad to get a look at DR Elmore to see that he is ok.

I’m equally grateful to see DR TomovOz posting and among us once again.

Continued get well vibes to both of you Gentlemen.

Congrats to your son, DR Ginny!  Good for him!  Like you, I put in for my vacation and saw it was APPROVED for the week of October 3-7.  It seems like everything is falling into place.

Say, I didn’t see anyone answer my question about the weather in October.

DR Jose, no rush.  I can send you a hard copy if you need/want one but you need to tell me where.

I also have special thoughts to DR Jane.

I am so looking forward to tonight’s episode of “Lost”.  It’s about the last show that I look forward to each week.  Now that “Joan of Arcadia” is canceled and “JAG” is over, it’s slim pickings for me.

I can’t believe I left a word out of my post about the dogs and chains.  I hope you understood I meant to say:

I just hope that the new homes solution is NOT (as in NOT, NOT, NOT)  a tree and a chain.

My fingers know not what they type sometimes.  :-\

Well, I revised that comment, as you can see, but I find him a limited talent trying to launch his own career on the coattails of his betters, namely P.G. Wodehouse and Noel Coward.  His research in his complete lyrics of Wodehouse was poor, his notes inaccurate, and a lot of his errors could have been corrected by examining the program files of the NYPL Theatre Collection.

We have friends in common, Robert Kimball being one of them, but he's not my friend nor am I his.

I forgot to mention that Mr. Guy Haines also happened to be in NY very briefly for some tennis thing, and he dropped by the studio to see Miss Kerry Butler.

Thurl Ravenscroft
dies at 91
'Disneyland wouldn’t have been, and wouldn’t be, the same without him'

The Orange County Register
Thurl Ravenscroft of Fullerton, whose voice was known worldwide through his work in movies, TV and at Disneyland, died Sunday from prostate cancer. He was 91.

Tony the Tiger?

That was Ravenscroft.

The Pageant of the Masters narrator?

Ravenscroft again.

Disneyland? Too many voices to mention, but Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion and the Enchanted Tiki Room were all graced by Ravenscroft’s pliable, unique voice.

Movies? How about "Cinderella," "Dumbo" and "Lady and the Tramp"?

"Disneyland wouldn’t have been, and wouldn’t be, the same without him," said former park President Jack Lindquist. "It’s all part of the experience. You can’t go home with a ride, but you can go home with a memory, and part of that is the audio – the sound part of it. His voice was one of the things that made it all come alive."

Thurl Arthur Ravenscroft was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Norfolk, Neb. He moved to California in 1933 to study interior design at the Otis College of Art and Design. While in school he was encouraged to go into show business and auditioned at Paramount studios to be a singer.

By the mid-1930s he was appearing regularly on radio, first on a program titled "Goose Creek Parson." In the late 1930s he appeared on the "The Kraft Music Hall" with Bing Crosby, singing backup in a group called the Paul Taylor Choristers. That group eventually became the Sportsmen Quartette.

After military service during World War II, he returned to Hollywood, later becoming involved in the Mellomen singing group, and began a career in radio, movies, television and commercials. The group could sing anything from rock ’n’ roll to bebop to barbershop, and it performed with a list of stars including Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.

In 1952, Ravenscroft achieved a measure of immortality, thanks to a TV commercial.

"I’m the only man in the world that has made a career with one word: Grrrrreeeeat!" Ravenscroft roared in a 1996 interview with The Orange County Register. "When Kellogg’s brought up the idea of the tiger, they sent me a caricature of Tony to see if I could create something for them. After messing around for some time I came up with the ‘Great!’ roar, and that’s how it’s been since then."

Ravenscroft’s involvement with Disneyland goes back to opening day in 1955, when he was the announcer for many of the ceremonies and events. His voice has been heard on numerous Disneyland attractions and rides, including Adventure Through Inner Space (1967-1986). He was the original narrator on Submarine Voyage.

In 1966, Dr. Seuss and Chuck Jones teamed up to do "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" for CBS. Ravenscroft recalled the Grinch fondly, saying, "That was my chance to prove I could really sing." The success of the Grinch led to other projects with Dr. Seuss, including "Horton Hears a Who" and "The Cat in the Hat."

His singing career continued into the 1970s. As a member of the Johnny Mann Singers, he sang on 28 albums, appeared on television for three seasons and performed for President Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev at the White House.

One of Ravenscroft’s biggest local claims to fame undeniably was his narration of Laguna Beach’s Pageant of the Masters, a job that began in 1973 and lasted for two decades. He told the Register upon his retirement that it was his favorite gig of all time.

"I’ve learned more about art doing the Pageant than I ever did in art school," he said.

Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling remembered working with Ravenscroft as "a wonderful collaboration.

"He was a gentleman who was beloved, and is still beloved, at the pageant," Duling said. "He was considered the grandpa of the pageant. Everyone backstage adored him."

Ravenscroft possessed, said Duling, "one of the great basso voices, so distinctive. For me, it was like writing music for an instrument that has a few tones that are absolutely unmistakable. It was so distinctive that you had to play to its strengths. He could bring a kind of deep, resonant reverence to something that deserved proper respect. Also, in his folksy manner, he could be the grandpa that everybody loved," Duling said.

Another fan with memories is Werner Weiss, webmaster of www.yesterland.com, a popular Internet site that highlights popular Disneyland attractions, including many that no longer exist.

"(Ravenscroft) is one of the busts in the Haunted Mansion," Weiss said. "He’s uncredited, as so many cast members at the park are, but it’s his face, and voice. It’s unusual. You actually SEE him in that attraction, a man whose voice you’re heard a thousand times."

June, Ravenscroft’s wife of 53 years, died in 1999 at age 80. He is survived by two children, Ron and Nancy, and four grandchildren. Services are pending.

Thurl Ravenscroft. One of the great voices indeed. He has a couple solo LPs out there, and you can find him on some of the Norman Luboff LPs as well. I've seen his face on the bust singing "Grim Grinning Ghosts" in the Haunted Mansion.

We had a Chinese-ish meal tonight.  Spicy pork and pineapple, with bean sprouts and ginger.  Chicken and mushrooms, with onions and water chestnuts.  Rice with bacon.  All quite flavorful, and filling.  Improvised, but sometimes that's what works best.

And preparing it all didn't distract me too much from Lost.

Back to ALIAS. I didn't think the suspense was squeezed to the max at all on the doomsday scenario. Certainly there were a couple of good moments, but on the whole, not a season finale on par for Season 1 or 2. The ending was a great tease, however.

...And I really need to stop sleeping in just because I can.  I was basically in a low-energy mode all day today, and once I sat down in the pit tonight, I started having a major case of the "drowsies".  And that's saying something if you know how loud the sound guys run the show!

I was supposed to be productive during my days...  Hmmm...  Maybe tomorrow...

But tomorrow, we're all going to the Noon matinee of Big River at Ford's Theatre.

So how about Friday?

Well, Friday I have to drive down to Richmond and back.  I need to take care of some banking, pick up some stray mail.... And, most importantly, it's Steve's birthday, and I need to drop off something for him at work. :)

Then Saturday and Sunday are two show days...  Monday is Memorial Day, and that's a holiday, so...

Hmmm....

Congrats on your recording succes BK!

I was sort of catching up on some past columns and postings I hadn't gotten around to reading. I am heading to camp in 3 days and I have absolutely no idea how I am going to catch up on everything I miss this summer! I am thinking about making a trip to New York in early August though...

I really have no fashion troubles. I go with a little bit trendy but I avoid all this cutting edge stuff. I don't understand some of the things that are popular today. It's almost as if we are moving back into the 70s!

AOL will not connect to the Internet.  We can get mail and stuff, but not browse.  I'm using Safari now.  I will be having a chat with AOL on the 'morrow, and if I don't get some satisfaction for their inept and unacceptable service, then I'm afraid it's over for AOL and I'll have to start going through the awfulness of trying to get everyone a change of e-mail address.

Great news about ADAM-12 and DRAGNET.  Maybe when I get my job....if I get a job....I can once again buy DVD's the way I used to..... *sigh*

I still remember a skit that Martin and Kent did on LAUGH-IN once....they often were featured in little in-betweens.....they were in their car dressed in their uniforms....Martin driving along.....a pause....Kent looks at Martin.....Martin looks at Kent....

Kent:  So how long have we been together?

Martin:  About five years.

Kent:  Yup.  About five years.

Martin:  Yup.

Kent:  So what do you say....don't you think it's about time?

Martin:  Yup.

Kent:  So do you want to?

Martin:  If you want to.  Do you want to?

Kent:  Yes, I do.

Martin: (stops the car and looks at Kent) All right.  You can drive.

Okay, what happened in the ocean at the end of "Lost"?? :o What was that all about??  Talk about a cliff-hanger!  And why would Locke not stop (what he was doing) when Hugo (a.k.a. Hurley) started yelling for him to stop (what he was doing)?
