I did have two dreams I remember. In the first I was at the Library of Congress, looking through theur American Musical Theatre collection. The reading room was packed, and I had to keep changing tables. I asked if there was a similar collection for opera and operetta. In my dream, the LoC looked more like the Miami University King Libnrary, where I was an assistant through undergrad and grad school/

During the Sweeney Todd Broadway run, 1980-82 or so, the rumor that Angela Lansbury had asked Steve to write Sunset Boulevard for her was rife. I remember asking him about that at the party after that June Men's Chorus concert in 1981. We had smoked several joints, and I remember little now. He told me that he had once ta;led to Billy Wilder about it, and Wilder's comment was something like, "Remember, it's about a dethroned queen."

"THE MUSIC MAN" is here!

I am pleased to announce the publication of ROBERT PRESTON, the newest play in THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS collection.  Copies are now available in both paperback and  Kindle editions via Amazon....and elsewhere.

True, he may be best remembered as “Professor Howard Hill” in THE MUSIC MAN, but Robert Preston had both a successful stage and film career that began in the mid-1930s and continued for the remainder of his life.

Of course, his public persona changed over the years.

In his early films, like UNION PACIFIC, BEAU GESTE, REAP THE WILD WIND and THIS GUN FOR HIRE, he played a “tough guy”; often the “heavy”. But, in the 1950s, he moved to New York and began working in the theatre.

Once he’d starred in Meredith Wilson’s classic musical and repeated the role in the movie version, Preston found himself being cast in many other stage musical, including BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS, I DO! I DO! and MACK & MABEL, as well as major films like HOW THE WEST WAS WON, MAME, S.O.B. and VICTOR/VICTORIA.

My one-person play, ROBERT PRESTON, joins the actor at two different points in his life. First when he’s about to audition for THE MUSIC MAN, and also when he’s making one of his last films, THE LAST STARFIGHTER.

It is Thursday here in Johnston SC.

Today promises to be enjoyable.  A friend from Fredericksburg VA is in nearby Edgefield to give expert audio forensics testimony in a murder trial.  He also happens to be the host of one of my weekly Zoom chats and just a heck of a nice guy. We met up a couple of months ago when he was here for pre-trial hearings, and we had lunch.  If all goes well, he will be testifying today, and we shall meet up for dinner.

Other than that, I am hope-hope-hoping that some items I have ordered over the past week -- items that have been shipped -- will arrive in the mail today.

First thing I did upon arising this morning was look out the window because we were expecting a touch of SN*W.

And sure enough, there it was. Only a "dusting", thank the universe. It's sticking to grass and trees, but not much else. The sun is bright and should burn it off soon.

Looks like we're safe over the next several days. Dodged a bullet there.

I like dodging bullets. Don't you?

No.  I didn't do it.  It happened about one mile from where I live in the spring of 2018.  I was not a witness and don't know any of the participants, alive or departed.

Last night I watched The Big Lebowski -- for no reason at all, except wanting to give myself one last chance to like it. I like a lot of Coen Bros.' films, but not all of them, and I never quite get past second base with this one.

The first third is entertaining, as are moments in the rest, and the cast is promising. But I never get through the whole thing without feeling the effort, so I think it's time to call it on this one.

NEXT!

I am very curious as well about the trial!

I have seen the video my friend was asked to analyse.  It happened outside the Johnston Billiard Parlor (which is now closed).  A man in a car was being verbally assailed by a man standing outside the car near the entrance to the parlor.  It was a shouting match, apparently, between the owner (man outside) and man in car.   I believe the contention is that the man in the car had been in the parlor and was told to leave.  The owner was furious, evidently,  It is not audible to know what was being said by either man.  The owner would walk away and then come charging back.  He was holding something black in his hand.  He would pull up his shirt and point to something on his belt.  Could not tell if it was a gun or not.  Just when it appeared the confrontation was over and the owner was walking away, he suddenly turned around and charged at the car with his hand holding the unidentifiable object being pointed at the car.  What was visible was two (or three) gun shots fired at the owner.  He fell backward and reportedly died on the scene.

That's all I know. It has taken three years for this to go to trial.  Nobody has said much about it.   If the trial is open to the public I do not know.

My inner 13-year-old is active today. I was editing some content and came across the phrase “joint holders of the account.” All I could focus on was “joint holders.” I don’t think that’s the image we were going for.

The main reason we chose Palm Springs as the warm weather location for my birthday is to spend the with Keith's aunt who is not doing well. It is the only reason we are going to LA.

Those were just the best books, my friend. I didn’t mention the ones that were mediocre or worse. And I didn’t mention some that were very good, like Stephen King’s Billy Dummers or Peter Mathiessen’s In Paradise.

We have the CD on order, but I just went to Amazon and listened to the 30-second clips of the mp3's for each song -- and I am loving the sound of the orchestra. They don't seem to have based the orchestration on the huge forces in the first film; rather, a number of moments sound to these ears like a really wonderful orchestra playing the originals. There's a doodad added or modified here and there, to be sure, with no harm done. (I did hear one "thing" -- an extension of a couple of bars -- that I will hate if there isn't an impeccable justification for it on the screen.)

I'll have to find my book, then.  I have a Hisense TV...and it is Google-centric and it gets triggered by words someone speaks on Tv...and it silences the program I am watching to tell me how it can look things up for  me.  I scream at it to shut up...and it shuts everything off.  Most intolerable.

My friend Doug, the forensics expert witness, texted me that he was finished at 3 p.m.   He wanted us to get together for dinner, but nothing opens until 5 p.m. so he said he would sit in his car and catch up on e-mails and phone calls.

I drove over and met him by 3:30 p.m.   We went into the open pool room (no pool tables any longer) and we sat at the war and drank boxed red wine out of plastic cups to kill time.   This is very "NOW" for Edgefield's rabble.

We walked over to the restaurant (Christine's) just as it opened.

We shared an appetizer of fried squash/succotash with a remoulade.  He also had a salad.  Doug ordered shrimp and grits (I begged him to consider a steak, but he said his wife is allergic to shellfish and he never gets to eat any, so...).  I ordered a filet mignon with sides of creamed spinach and roasted corn.

The meal was superb.  Doug was happy, I was happy.  We said goodbye until next Sunday when we have our Zoom chat.

He said he was on the stand for two hours as an expert witness for the defense.  He thought the prosecution would be tougher on his findings (because they were in the pre-trial session), but he said they concentrated on the fee he charges.  Doug said he was used to that question and had suggested the defense re-question him about standards.  He gets $295 per hour, full government-level per diem plus hotel and car rental.  Not bad, i guess.

The trial will continue tomorrow...and maybe beyond.  If and when I hear the outcome, I will post it here.

I only check my blood glucose once a day; fasting, first thing in the morning. I sometimes think it would be interesting to try a FreeStyle Libre-type continuous monitor, to see how things affect it in real time.

That's what I do, too...first thing in the morning.

Good wishes for a speedy shipment, DR Ron Pulliam!

Oh, my goodness! :-\

I am grateful for DR Jennifer asking me that question or I might never have joined Goodreads to keep track of my books for me.

I joined Goodreads a few years ago, too, so now I can know what books I've read. :)

I’m up to 123 this year.

Tonight, tonight,
I see West Side Story tonight.

I want to see it, but this walker is keeping me out of theatres. I look forward to your comments.

I've ordered the CD, also.  I'm really looking forward to it.
