The leg pains were so severe last night that I did not get to sleep until way past midnight. Once I did finally sleep, I slept poorly. When the alarm rang at 6:00, I refused to move and drag myself from bed until 6:45.

It's different.....and that's okay. Everybody was good.....and some folks were great.

I loved Maria & Tony even though Ansel Elgort is getting some lukewarm reviews. I loved Anita until the scene at Doc's......I guess nobody can beat Rita Moreno's take on Anita there......

And speaking of which....Rita is wonderful in this version....

I liked AMERICA - but I was disappointed in its staging outside on the street....oh well. I did love COOL - in its original place....I think all of the songs are back in stage order. I didn't get my LP out to check.....

I liked it - it's different.... TCM was showing the original 1961 version so I watched that when I got home....a strange experience.

AND there were all of FIVE of us in the theatre for the 5:15 p.m. show. And when we left - the lobby was empty......

I think the proper advice is: Be sure to have them tape your mouth shut before you wake up, as it's the anesthesia that makes you WANT to start blabbing.

Now, back to strongest vibes for a good surgery and recovery. I know an ankle healing is going to take a while, but here's to it being a fine one.

My viewing of the series has been extremely spotty, though, so one of these days I should try catching up with some of those seasons. I did see some later episodes that were filmed somewhere in the coastal regions, but I have no recall of the specific area. The ones in the valley, though, definitely worthy.

I wonder if the lukewarm reviews re any Tony are inevitable, regardless of how well the person acts and sings, when he doesn't look like he could have been their gang leader (AND in this version you know he also spent time in prison) -- ESPECIALLY when the rest of that very gang looks so utterly convincing. Riff is absolutely incredible here. But yes, other than that nagging observation, he's fine.

And yes, the Doc's scene with Anita seemed to leave "something" to be desired, but I'm not sure it's her fault. I'll have to see what a second viewing reveals. I definitely liked how he pulled off an inclusion of the Jet girls in that scene.

As for "America" in the streets: When I saw the teasers and trailers, I felt absolutely the same. Then, in context I liked it. And their use of the 1961 movie version of the song worked great in the street.

Speaking of which, I liked every instance of Spielberg paying homage to the 1961 film in various ways, large and small.

"Krupke" and "Cool" are both pre-rumble here, so, not in stage order. But these settings worked for me.

Yes, they flip-flopped them for the 1961 film. But what Spielberg did was place them both before the rumble.

I immediately went in and said that was not correct at all - that there was no way the original had 120 musicians, and there was equally no way the new one had many less than that. I pointed out that the new one was played by two different symphony orchestras, the NY and LA Philharmonic. Of course, he never admits he was wrong, he just stops posting. Then today, he links to a Variety article that says there were 120 musicians 1961 and mentioned how he was "dressed down" for saying so. He did admit he was wrong about the new one because he had to as the article also stated what I mentioned above.

The article was written by my good friend Jon Burlingame, so I e-mailed him and told him there was no way that number was right. He admitted that he'd already had a firestorm going about it - someone on the creative team said it was 120, aping a very incorrect statement someone else made. Well, after thirty minutes it was verified that I was, in fact, correct - the original had seventy-two musicians, which, by the way, was VERY large for that era. Neither Ben-Hur or any of those Rozsa scores had quite that many players. So, Jon fixed the article and I went back to the guy's post and said he might want to amend his post and then finally admit he was wrong. We shall see.

I think two things that make the 1961 score sound so uniquely "huge" are the quintupled (or whatever it was) pianos and xylophones, and the incredible recording of it. (You have to choose the 4.0 track on the Blu-ray to get the closest to it.)

Other such theater-to-film adaptations sound similarly huge to me -- I think Oklahoma! and The Music Man are a couple of examples. It's in the scoring and the recording. Hollywood had a "sound" unlike Broadway theater sound.

I "found" the full score to the West Side Story "Live to Projection" edition for used by symphony orchestras when playing one of those events where the film and dialogue are played to live music. Whatever they're called. You know what I mean. I've never been to one of those, and I find the concept gimmicky as all hell. But I digress.

So I'm browsing through it, and at the point where the current digital copies of the 1961 film have the faulty color change near the end of the Overture, the syncing cue for the conductor reads "Screen color change to GREEN" - followed a few bars later by "Screen color change to BLUE". Talk about perpetuation of a cinematic crime...

I posted on a score-sharing site that I was looking for a good PDF of [REDACTED], unlike the couple of copies that had already been posted there. Reason being, those other copies were either (1) incomplete and jumbled, with some songs repeated and others missing entirely, or (2) flawed or corrupted because of a huge file size that was either not displaying well or was all-out crashing PDF readers. So did anyone happen to have one that they've checked over and know to be complete and working?

(In the meantime: with the help of a couple of techy types who were able to advise, I was able to fix the problem using both of those copies, resulting in a perfect PDF score. But I let my question stand in order to see what anyone else might come up with. Because who knows, someone might even have something nicer than my own now-perfect copy.)

A couple of days later, one person responds, "Here it is!" and gives me a link to it. I download it, open it up, and it's the jumbled/incomplete copy. (Now, what had I said about someone having one that they'd - ahem - checked over first?) So I sent him a polite note back, thanking for the effort, but pointing out that his copy was exactly what I was talking about...and I included a quickly compiled list of errata.

Four days later: crickets. :D Which is precisely what I had rather expected would be the response.

He replaced the rusted out hinges on my bathroom cabinet, changed a light bulb in a ceiling fixture that requires a taller ladder than my stepladder, and did some repairs to the roof. I went to a favorite restaurant for lunch at noon. They advertised fried chicken and pork chops. At noon, neither of those items waw ready. They had out their vegetables, some baked chicken and some brats. (It's like a buffet, but they serve you).

I asked if the pork chops would be out very soon. I was told "maybe 10 or 15 minutes."

I ask you, if a restaurant opens at Noon, shouldn't their food be ready for potential customers who come for those advertised items?

She's doing Frozen Jr. at some amateur kids theater thing and her moron director made her sing Let It Go five times in a row and she of course blew out her voice. She's been resting it but it hasn't fully come back yet. I adjusted her high notes in her solo so they're easier for her to belt and hopefully she'll be fine by tomorrow.
