Well, you've read the notes, the notes were listless and yet listened, and now it is time for you to post until the listless listening cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BILDUNGSROMAN!
-
I think that word could apply to a lot of my books, actually.
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Those are some great pictures, BK!
-
Today after hamburgers at my mom's, I have to leave from her house to usher for the inaugural Miss Washington Volunteer, Miss Washington Teen Volunteer and Miss Washington Evergreen competition (https://www.washingtoncenter.org/event/miss-washington-volunteer-preliminary-2022/).
-
Join us for the inaugural Miss Washington Volunteer, Miss Washington Teen Volunteer and Miss Washington Evergreen competition. Okay...I'm sure it'll be an interesting evening. ;)
-
And now, I must be off.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
GREAT news from DR TCB!!!!
-
~~~DENTAL VIBES~~~ for DR John G.!!!!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept well with a bed full of cats. It was very chilly last night.
-
~~~DENTAL VIBES~~~ for DR John G.!!!!
Ditto!
-
DR Ginny, are you spending the day with banana recipes?
-
DR JohnG, after mangling that complete recording of Naughty Marietta to fit onto one CD, I'm curious to see what Harbinger leaves off the Rose-Marie recording.
-
I actually have a bootleg of the unreleased Rose-Marie recording. I did not work on it. Its leading man is my former best friend and Wanda, the Indian temptress, was sung by my goddaughter's mother.
It was the first complete recording of the score, rather poorly conducted - he mangles the title song - and I prefer the RCA recording of excerpts with Julie Andrews.
-
I'm thinking about spending the day making chicken soup.
-
In all the tributes to Sidney Poitier, I have yet to hear anyone mention Porgy and Bess.
-
Good morning.
-
I have decided to stay home for the next few weeks. I'll watch church on zoom, and the only other meeting I have scheduled will probably be done by zoom, as well.
We've done it before; we can manage another couple of weeks.
-
I'm not sick; just being cautious.
-
So I guess I'll have even less to say than usual for a while.
-
Good morning, all.

What a treasure trove of photos in the notes, considering that BK didn't even know about them. I could only wish that any of my relatives could come up with something like that.
Actually, one did, not long ago. Back in the late 50s and through the 60s my uncle was shooting Kodachrome slides on a pretty good Kodak camera. I have no idea what happened to the many dozens of rolls he must have shot, but on a visit to their house a few years ago, he dug out the last couple dozen of them which I brought home and scanned for him. A few of them, for me, were like buried treasure unearthed -- photos of my own family and them on one of their visits to us in Fort Lauderdale around 1963. Stunning, natural color, and everyone looking, well, alive.
-
Okay, it does feel like a Sunday. Which is just fine, because tomorrow will feel like a bonus weekend day. And it's a sunny one which I'll be enjoying by staying indoors and working on How to Succeed.
-
In all the tributes to Sidney Poitier, I have yet to hear anyone mention Porgy and Bess.
Late yesterday I saw somebody post a little compilation video of it from the worst quality bootlegs imaginable. Of course those horrid bootlegs are all we have unless and until someone manages a restoration.
It's such a tricky subject, what with Poitier having disowned it and with Preminger's concept being so weird, with the static camera setups and all. It's amazing to remember us being able to just go out to see it in 1959/1960.
-
Good news from DR TCB!
-
DR LAURA caution is a good thing nowadays.
-
DR JOHN G thanks for the comments about the play.
-
Page Two!

What great photos in the notes! I liked seeing them very much!
Time machine material.

TOD:
I got my very own FIRST record player for my 12th birthday. It was a single player with four speeds.....it was coral and white. And it came from the Spiegal catalog.
Most entertaining and I kept it for a few years until I bought my own - that had an automatic changer.
-
The first two 45s that I bought were VACATION by Miss Connie Francis and ROSES ARE RED by Mr Bobby Vinton.
-
I looked for it here at this Catalog website.....but I couldn't find it...but this is a nice trip to the past....if you are interested in catalogs.

-
I am moving very slowly today. I need to make xhicken soup but my body says, Lie down and do nada.
-
Weird night.
Got sleep.
It's cold here.
-
Happy Saturday.
-
TOD: I remember getting a child's record player. Mom bought me a record of Sound of Music, which confused me, because it wasn't Julie Andrews; it was Mary Martin.
-
Last night I was thinking about how long it has been since I've eaten a donut.
Today Preppy Kitchen is making donuts on Youtube.
-
Our first record player was an old 78rpm one. We kids also had a small child's player for small child's 78s. I believe I was around 6 or 7 when we got our first 4-speed player with the changer.
-
Whenever I'm watching Psycho and we see Norman's record player with a 78rpm copy of the 'Eroica' (off the top of my head I think that's what it is), I remember that first player we had. But I think we had just the fifth symphony.
-
Good morning. all.

Hard to write about something too many haven’t seen.

I love the Julie Andrews recording.
-
Slept well. I do think the Advil is helping.
-
I have to make beef stew today.
-
Maybe I will start to take down Christmas decorations.
-
The chicken, onions, garlic, and seasonings are boiling away.
-
Yes!

I guess. I would love to see it.
-
Slept well. I do think the Advil is helping.
I have much better luck with my pains with Advil rather than with Aleve.
-
I just plugged in my new keyboard and mouse and I'm having a tense time adjusting to it.
-
Maybe I will start to take down Christmas decorations.
My niece and I are going to my mom's at 1:00 to take down her Christmas decorations and tree. Then we'll have burgers for lunch. Then I must usher downtown.
-
Yes!

That's a good one! ;D

Keyboard and mouse and xhicken vibes for DR ELMORE.

Hmmmm maybe I will order a pizza today.

DR TCB, YAY on your test results.

TOD: I remember getting a child's record player. Mom bought me a record of Sound of Music, which confused me, because it wasn't Julie Andrews; it was Mary Martin.
My sister gave me the Mary Martin one for Christmas when it first came out. I had to listen to it a few times before I really appreciated it.
-
I remember listening to my Hopalong Cassidy storybook and record on a record player that was in the bedroom I shared with my sister. I was maybe six years old. I had that record player for years even after my sister moved out.
-
My parents had a nice built in system in our living room. I wanted my own stereo and kept begging for one. Finally, maybe my 15th birthday, they gifted me a stereo. It was a one box record player with 3 speakers. I was underwhelmed by the sound, but at least I had something better in my bedroom.
-

Hard to write about something too many haven’t seen.
I guess. I would love to see it.
Wait. You never did?
Nope. When it was released in 1959, my mother wouldn't let me see it. She said I was too young. I was 12 or 13 and loved the music I knew from it.

Nope. When it was released in 1959, my mother wouldn't let me see it. She said I was too young. I was 12 or 13 and loved the music I knew from it.
And then it went away. At some point. I wonder how long the movie stayed in circulation before that.
I guess I was 11, but I *think* I'd recently shown a strong interest in Gershwin and my parents didn't hesitate to take us all to see it for that reason.
That's interesting about the too young reason. Of course that's why I wasn't permitted to see Where the Boys Are and Dr. No when they were released a year or two or even three years later.
-
Porgy is one of those movies that I've always wanted to confirm where we saw it, which has thus far been impossible thanks to the Columbus Dispatch not being on newspapers.com.
-
My other two times to see it were in the nice little theater at the Schoenberg music library at UCLA when they were showing revival house fare in the late 70s, and at the Ziegfeld in October 2007 as part of a celebration of the publication of a Preminger biography.
At that UCLA showing I was thrilled seeing it again, and at discovering how much of the original music Previn had retained... and at the Ziegfeld (with a severely compromised print), I was stunned at how pedestrian the cinematography seemed.
-
I think it's going to be buckwheat pancakes for lunch.
-
What great photos in the notes! I liked seeing them very much!
Time machine material.
I did, too.
-
The stew is in the oven, where it will simmer for 90 minutes.
-
Meanwhile, I will finish off this Shirley Temple film. Franklin Pangborn is very funny in it.
-
TOD:
The first record players were something shared with my sisters. I don't remember having my own player until I was in my teens.
My first records were 45 rpm Disney discs, often with songs from the Sherman Brothers. I remember the Jaunting Car and a couple of songs from Dumbo in particular. The Mary Poppins soundtrack and a collection of George M. Cohan songs were my first albums.
-
Marilyn Bergman has died. Love that score for Ballroom. I think it has some of her finest work.
-
I forgot the Bergmans wrote the theme song for In the Heat of the Night, so there was a Poitier connection.
-
I spent the last hour listening to Harry Reid's funeral, shredding chicken, fighting off Annabelle and Stella, straining the broth, and cursing my limited counter space. This is why I cook as little as possible.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Good Covid results news from TCB. Have you been feeling ill or do you suspect you were exposed?
Vibes for a successful move back home.
-
I came down with a cold about 10:30 last night. I have no reason to believe it's anything other than a cold at this point. I am isolating with a box of kleenex, lots of Sambucol, and lots of books. It's already improved a bit, but I'm staying in.
-
Jane, the phone problems are partly because I'm trying to change carriers. I only buy unlocked phones, so I can change when I get disgusted. I don't think getting the new phone set up with the new carrier will be a problem -- it's getting away from AT&T that's causing problems.
I purchased an iPhone SE because it's very close to my iPhone 5, which has worked out well for me. I prefer small phones.
-
I have no other news.
Vibes to all.
TTFN.
-
Ann stopped by for a visit and told me about her and Jen's Christmas adventure with wild turkeys on Martha's Vineyard. They were visiting Jen's brother, and Ann said the Vineyard was invaded by wild turkeys. At one point she counted 50 turkeys on the lawn.

So it was the iPhone 5 that AT&T said you couldn't use anymore? I have the SE first generation which needs an update. I didn't know they still sold it. The mini 12 & new mini 13 are both the same size as my SE phone.

Continue to feel better.
-
We also only buy unlocked phones. Fortunately we continue to be pleased with T-Mobile.
-
I stopped into a T-Mobile store, not the one we have used in the past, to look at the mini 13. I was surprised when the person helping me said they won't set up the phone if I purchase it. They did that for me at the other store and I hope they still offer the service, if I do buy the new phone.

DR JOHN G is that the movie in which Franklin plays a stand by organist? HAHAHA.
And it does end with the Military Man tap which I really like and in which Shirley fluffs a step......
-
Up from a nap. My tooth has started hurting again. Ugh.
-

No. He was the manager of a high rise. Burt Lahr shoved him down a laundry chute.

Onward.

Four!

;D At first it seemed like an easy fix, just slip the mixer out of the box and leave the box. The three cats have become too fascinating now to "fix" the problem :)

I have been craving wild rice for a while and for some strange reason couldn't find it. Finally I found Oregon wild rice. It wasn't that great. I usually sauté chopped onions and celery and add them after the rice is cooked instead of while the rice is cooking. Since the rice smelled and looked odd to begin with I added the onions & celery earlier thinking to add more flavor. It all just seemed water logged. Much seasoning was needed :)
-
Those of you who make wild rice what rice do you use?
-
How do you cook it?
-
'night
-
I haven't had a good wild rice in a long time.
-
Good night, friends.
-
What a day. I could not fall asleep, got up and did stuff on the computer and finally got back in bed at seven-thirty. Finally fell asleep. The doorbell rang at eleven-thirty and it was Grant and his handyman because there are a few things that need to be done here. But I wasn't expecting them. As soon as they left, I went back to sleep and slept until three. So, maybe six hours of sleep.

I saw it once when it was first televised, with some fanfare. It was also available in its entirety on youtube for a while back in the early 2000s.

Once up, I got coherent as fast as I could and began futzing and finessing so I could send the first batch of pages to Muse Margaret. I was pretty happy with everything, so there was only the usual smoothing out, a couple of additions and a couple of subtractions. I also went back to some earlier chapters to check on a few things and I'm glad I did because I ended adjusting a few things I'd let slip by - very helpful - and I'd also changed a character name when I was about thirty pages in and I hadn't fixed that in the earlier pages, so got that done. I called Muse Margaret and told her the pages would be there in moments. I made a PDF of the first 120 pages and off they went - I was quite nervous about it, really, mostly because I struggled a lot with the first two chapters to get everything feeling right to me and to have the tone right, which is imperative in this book for many reasons. And getting the characters just right. Then I wrote one new page, just so I'd be into a new chapter.
-
I went to the mail place and picked up one package, then came right back home. I made a batch of Wacky Noodles for food, then ate that and it was very good and very filling. I began doing the laundry - sheets, towels, and whatever was in the hamper. Then I went back to writing. So far, I've done about nine pages, so I'll do another five or six at some point, although because of the 11:30 visitor tomorrow, I really need to be in bed by two at the latest.
-
Then, about twenty minutes ago, I got the call from Muse Margaret, and it was the kind of call one hopes for. She loved every minute of what she read and was very detailed about it and her favorite parts. It was so nice to hear and she was quoting me her favorite dialogue. Unusually, she did not have a single note. And so, onward we go.
-
What is this page four malarkey?
-
Page four? No more.
-
Page four? See the door.
-
Page four? You're a chore.
-
Page four? A total bore.
-
Page four? Apparently, more in store.
-
I personally know that dear reader Jeanne has at least two books she'd better be reading.
-
I know it.
-
Where in tarnation IS everybody?
-
Certainly not here.
-
Perhaps they're there.
-
Okay, now we're in gaslighting territory with this endless page four.
-
C'mon already.
-
Stop the gaslighting!
-
Page five is alive.
-
Page five will thrive.
-
Hi.
-
Long night of dancing. Quickstep will take it out of me.
-
Three more pages and I'll have done fifteen. I'm gonna put the sheets on the bed and then try to do those three pages so I can be done and relax.
-
Fifteen pages done and on the sixteenth. I may finish that and one more before bed. Meanwhile, no posts in two HOURS.
-
Bed is made, laundry is put away, I've shaved, and now I'll write some notes and then take a shower. After that, I may write those two pages, then to bed.
-
Three more pages and I'll have done fifteen. I'm gonna put the sheets on the bed and then try to do those three pages so I can be done and relax.
Oh, those kind of sheets! I thought you were putting the sheets of paper on the bed, and then doing three more.
-
I thought that was weird, but you know how authors are.
-
Authors. A great game when I was a kid.
-
How else would I possibly know what Thackeray wrote?
-
George must still be ushering at the Miss America Contest.
-
My mother coached a Miss Washington contestant one year in the talent portion. The young lady ended up singing “Summertime” from that Sidney Poitier film.
-
And I don’t mean TO SIR WITH LOVE.
-
I am bound to have another restless night, tonight.
-
I can’t wait to go home.
-
Mistake or not, I get misty-eyed just thinking about it.
-
Perhaps, George is off munching on tater tots again.
-
It was basically a nice day today.
-
And tomorrow should be nice, as well.
-
And despite the predicted rain, Monday will be nicer, too.
-
I have been having bad dreams about the kitties. Pure guilt I am sure.
-
I don’t think I can make it to six (aged-wise).
-
But possibly post-wise.
-
John, so sorry to hear about your tooth.
-
Yes, heard about it. It was on the EVENING NEWS WITH DAVID MUIR. Anyone want to argue that?
-
Elmore, how is your snow? Do you have enough blankets?
-
One thing’s universal….
-
Laife’s no dress rehearsal.
-
Six!!
-
Okay, so I made it. You want to make something out of it?
-
Now this is a cat story that’s hilariously insane.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/home/2022/01/08/cats-took-vitamix-hostage/
That's funny!! ;D
-
Hi, Tom.
-
M I D N I G H T !
-
Tonight, I ushered (for the first act only) for a state (beauty/scholarship) pageant that honors volunteers and volunteering.
-
Hello, George. Have you been napping, or eating?
-
They had a talent section, but some weren't as talented as you'd think they should be. ::)
-

Tonight, eating after I got home.

Tonight, I ushered (for the first act only) for a state (beauty/scholarship) pageant that honors volunteers and volunteering.
You volunteered to usher, why weren’t you in the pageant?
-
And the music was LOUD!
-
Not the performers or during the talent competition, but all the music that was played under the emcee's talking and the videos that introduced all the young women and when they talked about their platforms was just too loud and it was difficult to hear them speak! :o

I'm not a pretty (or young) enough girl.

Maybe in my next life. ;)

That is like the last time I saw a musical at the Paramount. The bass notes were bouncing off my molars.

There are some ways to get around such barriers. ::)

It was just weird. You'd think that the people putting on the competition (and it's got more tomorrow, too) would know what they're doing. I guess not. :P
