I slept quite well last night. Stella, after hissing and biting me on Sunday, decided she loved me - after two meals from my hand - decided she loved me and slept next to me all night.

DR TCB, Buddy may be confused by all the strange scents from hospital, rehab, and your sister's house that you carry at the moment. When I came home last year from hospital, Thatch hid from me for a day.

For as much that our cats have always loved me (he said, modestly), they would often show little reaction or even no interest at all when I'd return from a 4 or 5 day trip. Invariably, I'd get the snuggling that night in bed, but other than that, they played it cool, man. Real cool.

It was a different matter the couple of times we boarded the brood at our local Cat Clinic when all of us were going to be away for a few days. Once they got used to it, they did fine being boarded there, but man, were they happy to see us return.

The winner for me, though, was the day I had proof that our animals do not just identify us through smell, as some would have you believe. The last time we boarded them, in 2015 when the three of us were in Florida, Poe had had a strong reaction to being taken there, and we sat with the three of them for a long time waiting for him to calm down and stop hissing at us and Kali and Mikey in the little room they were assigned. (It's a very well done boarding facility in all respects.) The next day I called to see how they were doing, and the vet told me they finally gave Poe his own room because he was stressing out the other two -- but they were all doing fine by that point. And it was fine the rest of the week. The evening we got back to pick them up, I went to Poe's room and looked at him through the window before going in. He was lying there calmly, no problem. Then I tapped on the window to get his attention, and he literally did a classic double-take when he looked up and saw it was me through that thick door and window. That was a joyous reunion all around.

But yeah, they can easily be put off for a bit when we humans come home after an absence, or when one of them is brought back after a trip to the vet. It's all normal.

I'm glad BK says or writes RIDIC. I'm the only one I know who's done it for years, though in all fairness I only think or say it to myself, so who knows how many would recognize it if said out loud. My own reference for it has always been Stanwyck in Double Indemnity. I'm not sure I've heard it used otherwise.

Good luck at the oral surgeon today, DR John G., and enjoy napping later under the painkillers.

I had a molar extraction ten years ago, and boy did my cheek swell up afterward. I remember stopping at the pharmacy for whatever she had given me. By that time the anesthetic was wearing off and I told them to please just hurry this one up. They could see why, of course. I took it, laid down, had an absolutely BLISSFUL nap, and when I woke up later I felt really good.

I have had two very miserable sinus days.  Yesterday was misery.

Things abated at night, and I slept about four hours before I could no longer breathe easily in my CPAP.

I got up and went to my recliner, covered up with a blanket, and progressively got congested as the morning hours passed.

I have an appointment with a specialist on Feb. 8.  I do hope I last that long!!  (It's not likely that serious, but sometimes feels that way).

Otherwise....

I watched "The Electrical Life of Louis Wain" day before yesterday.  What a very odd film.

The entire film seems to be an acting showcase for Benedict Cumberbatch, who executive produced.

It's a true story (and it if it wasn't enough for that title to be up on the screen in English, a subtitle reassured us of that fact also in English).  Very strange.

Louis Wain is credited with making cats a popular image in paintings, and those paintings are credited with making cats a popular house pet at a time when it was uncommon.

Wain had something like six or seven sisters plus his invalid mother who relied upon him to exist.  One of the sisters constantly nagged him about his need to earn more money and to marry into money (since none of his sisters seemed capable of doing that).

Oddly, he fell in love with the governess his family used.  She was ten years his senior.  Their affair, and marriage, apparently dragged the family name down to the point where none of the sisters could attract suitable beaus.

It's a very unpleasant story, IMO.  I find nothing of value in any of the characters other than Wain.  Toby Jones plays a publisher who hires Wain to do the cat illustrations.  Wain, however, had no business savvy and never copyrighted his work.  Because his paintings were so popular, others made money reproducing and selling copies.

All of that said, Cumberbatch turns in one of the year's best performances, although I'd say his turn in "The Power of the Dog" is far more exceptional, as is that movie.

I saw this film on Amazon prime video.

Sorry, I thought maybe you would know about the Texas university policies.  The states I have lived in have a reduced fee for in states students with high fees for out of state.  The downside can be that the university will offer more out of state students admission in order to receive the higher tuition fees.

I don't think I ever saw her live. I've got her performances on DVD in three different Carmen productions, L'Incoronazione di Poppea and Barber of Seville from Glyndebourne, the Salome from the Royal
Opera with her nude scene, and the Ponnelle film of Nozze di Figaro.

DR JANE my sister and my cousin the EX-executor are going to do a cleaning at the house at the end of the week.

I don't think we are going to spend a LOT of money - not much really has to be done.  The house has hardwood floors through out - tile in the kitchen and bathrooms - carpet in the family room.  My thought is that whoever buys the house will want to replace the carpet with their own choice anyway.....  The house was freshly painted about a year and half ago and it still looks good.

So then we will move on.

I am glad to say that we received the payout on ONE of the annuities today, so that was nice.

I am glad you don't have to clean it.  I had to do some work on my father's place after he died.  It was hard staying there all day in a totally empty condo.  One neighbor let me use her bathroom and another neighbor fed me.  It was awkward with the neighbor who fed me as it turned out they wanted to buy his place, as is, for less than we could get after I fixed it up.  They were only renting their place.  I felt bad but I couldn't sell it for what they wanted.

Did you read the encouraging news from United Airlines?  Since mandating vaccines none of their employees have died from covid.

That's good. Didn't I also read that 3,000 of their employees currently have covid?

Yes, equal to 4% of employees.

It’s funny. There are all these stories about how dogs can tell the difference in languages. The bird convinced me he could tell that a long time ago. He really isn’t happy with foreign language films, at least those languages he doesn’t speak.

Trying to eat soup with gauze in your mouth is no fun.

Not fun at all.  Which tooth was it?

Upper right molar at the back.

At least it is a molar and not a front tooth.

Just finished Richard Powers' Bewilderment, which is an Oprah Book. It's like a climate change version of Flowers for Algernon. And it's pretty good.

Took my first test an hour ago.

NEGATIVE.  So my sinus misery has other reasons for existing.

So, if I am getting this correct from DR singdaw, and from the wording at the website:

You just pick letters until something pops up?  And when one letter proves correct, you try other combinations until you have all your letters?

Twelve pages. I was three ahead from last night, so I've really done today's fifteen. I'll now finish watching a motion picture, and then I just might another three pages and get to the end of the chapter I'm on, and do the first few lines of the chapter that will follow. And with that, I'm two-thirds of the way through this book.
