Title: THE RANDY VICAR AND THE FRUIT COMPOTE
Post by: bk on June 26, 2005, 11:58:40 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've commiserated with my ongoing sore throat and bug problems, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - which will be directly after they finish the fruit compote or, at the very least, the fruit compost.

Amusement rides are not for me. "Space Mountain" put me off for life. Hated every second. I'm more the gentle journey type - Pirates or the Haunted mansion type things.  I don't even like carousels. (But it's my favourite R & H)

I actually enjoyed Disneyland's Space Mountain but I also enjoy more sedate rides such as Pirates and Haunted Mansion.  I've never been in a roller coaster that goes upside down.  I don't know why but I haven't.  Universal Studios' Jurrasic Park ride was pretty fun.  Those are probably the only two real amusement parks that I've been to.  Even though the Seattle Center has amusement park rides, I don't really consider it an amusement park.

Good morning, all!  Yesterday, during a GOLDEN APPLE break, I watched Jacques Pepin deal with an apple compote.  He was not at all randy about anything.  Today is a sojourn at the lovely (and quite air-conditioned) Tams-Witmark; first up, my barber, who's been vacationing in Sicily whilst I've been recuperating.  After Tams-Witmark, I have a few parcels to drop off at the post office before I fill out the form to have my mail held from Wed through Friday.  All in all, a day crammed with incident.

Hello all,

Trust you are well and happy.

TOTD:  I have been on "Space Mountain" - did it 5 times in a row - wa hoo!!!!  Went to Six Flags Magic Mountain and almost churled when I was taken on a rollercoaster with a "hidden" loop!!!!  I think I'm more a merry-go-round man now .. ha ha!

Well, dear readers, I regrettably will be absent from HHW for a little while.  The reason for this is outlined below .....

As you will most likely not be aware, I had both lungs transplanted in October, 2002 (as a result of life long chronic asthma).  A procedure which has given me a much greater quality of life and allowed me to do things I had not been able to before.

Over the last 3 years things have been generally very good and I have considered myself to be extremely fortunate to have been given this ‘second chance’.

Regrettably, since December, 2004 I have had periods of shortness of breath as a result of my body rejecting the new lungs.  Today I have been “hit with a brick” and told that there is irreversible rejection/damage to the organs.  As a result of this, I am faced with a situation – it appears the hospital specialists want to re-list me for a 2nd transplant operation.  I will need to have both lungs replaced again!

Apart from dealing with the shock of this news, I will now need to focus on plans for the immediate and short term future.  As you can probably understand, there is a lot to consider.  My mind is a bit fogged with it all at the moment, however I am sure things will become a bit clearer in time.

I hope I can just carry on as normal – work, play and live just as I am at the moment.

I am sure my dear friend Tomovoz will keep you updatged until I get back on HHW (and be sure, I WILL be back!)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being such wonderful people, for being there and for allowing me to share this with you.

Biggest hugs and lots of love,

Derek

Adore roller coasters and the scarier, the better. Couldn't get enough of Space Mountain at Disney World or the Matterhorn at Disneyland. Also love the Tower of Terror at Disney/MGM, and adored it so much that we rode it four times in one morning and afternoon.

Busch Gardens at Tampa has some amazing roller coasters that twist you six ways from Sunday, and we rode those numerous times while we were there.

But I can enjoy something sedate like the Peter Pan ride at Disney World/Disneyland just as much as the thrill rides. I really admire the ingenuity of all of them.

Paramount does do a good job with its DVDs, but it needs to revisit and remaster BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. It's grainy, dirty, too dark, and in need of a serious restoration.

I was reading the VARIETY review this morning of ABC's upcoming EMPiRE miniseries (not as bad as some advance word would suggest according to the reviewer), but even before it starts, I know the actors won't be able to touch that sterling line-up of talent who did I, CLAUDIUS.

EMPIRE deals with the life of Octavius after Julius Caesar's murder up until he becomes emperor. I believe HBO's more ambitious series ROME deals with a different time in ancient Roman history, but I'm not clear about which date it will begin with.

My first visit to Disneyland was the first year it opened.  I don't remember much, but I do remember the Snow White Mine Ride.  Well, not much of that, except for the Wicked Witch with the apple, scared the s... out of me.  (Fortunately, I was still in diapers, I believe, or the clean-up would have been worse than it was.)

Disneyland was pretty much an annual event for my family while I was growing up.  The last time I went was on Gay Nite, a special fundraising event, several years ago.  Yes, the place has changed over the years.

The Disneyland replication in Florida at Disney World, on the other hand, is a pale imitation of the original.  Disney World is better for what Disneyland doesn't contain.

Well, I managed to sleep most of yesterday afternoon, then, after a brief break to reacquaint myself with my lovely wife and two fantastic sons, I went back to bed and promptly slept for another 9 hours, which is most unusual for me.  So today I am feeling a bit better rested but I am stiff from lying around so much yesterday.  Oy.

Tomovoz:  Thanks for the IM.  Can't wait to hear it!!

George:  Thanks for you IM the other day, too.  I had completely forgotten about those CDs.  May they find their way into regional theater artistic directors' hands across the great Puget Sound region, LOL.

So today I will do nothing other than reconnect to my "real life" (ooh, a late-career Sergio Mendes reference).  I have a house to straighten (how it got crooked is beyond me), a floor to sand with 240 fine grit sandpaper, bills to pay, and Burt Bacharach CDs to re-shelve.

I have already posted here about my least favorite ride:  Mission: Space at Epcot.  That tragic death of the 4 year old a couple of weeks ago only confirms what I said here months ago--the ride is dangerous and more warnings need to be posted.  I have never been so ill in my life.  I was literally unable to move for almost 2 hours after stumbling off of the ride.  Never again.

Least favorite ride, currently, is Disneyland's Pirates of the Carribean.  Reason: The ride has been changed, Politically Corrected.  Originally, when the pirates were raping and looting the town, two pirates were chasing round and round after two statuesque women, and a third pirate was being chased by a plump woman.  Now, all three pirates are being chased by all three women.  PC ideology has ruined the joke.  Better not to tell it at all.  Phooey.

TOD:  I used to love scary rides like roller coasters and tilt-a-whirls and the like, but at some point in the past twenty years or so, I started avoiding them like the plague.  I've somehow developed this overwhelming fear that if I got on one of these rides, they are going to break or fall apart or misoperate in some manner or other.  So despite having the proximity to about four different large amusment parks, I haven't been to any in a long time.

This summer, however, my friends vow to cure me of this fear and have made plans to take me to Great Adventure in NJ.  I think I'm up for the challange.  It would be nice to be able to go on boardwalk rides with my nephew and great neice when we go to the shore, instead of chickening out all the time.

As for amusement park rides....

I go through phases... I'll go through a summer or two in a row where I don't go to a park, and then suddenly I find myself visting a park week after week - and then wishing I had bought a season pass.  Ah, well...

Paramount's Kings Dominion is the closest park to me.  It's about 20 minutes from Richmond, and about and hour and 15 from DC - depending on traffic.  They have some great coasters, including two wooden ones which still manage to "entertain".  Their steel coasters and rides aren't bad either.  My favorite is "The Volcano" which is one of those "blast coasters" - and it's one of those where you sit down in the seat with your feet dangling in the air - suspended gondolas.  -Is that the proper term?  In any case...  It's a great ride.

As a lot of theme parks have been doing lately, they keep updating some of their rides - well, more like refurbishing them. A couple of new coats of paint, a new theme, a new brand name character, and.... Voila!  A new ride!  -Sort of.
Title: Re:THE RANDY VICAR AND THE FRUIT COMPOTE
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 27, 2005, 09:30:25 AM
I do have to say my favorite ride hands-down is "The Tower of Terror" down at Disney-MGM Studios.  Such a great "pre-show" - especially if you happen to get one of the "bellhops" who really gets into character.  And each time I've been back, they've tweaked the ride, so it's always been different - even different during multiple rides on the same day.

The one time I went to Universal Orlando, I had a blast.  I like their "Hulk" coast the best.  However, just because one can ride all the coasters in the park in under and hour - Thanks to the Fast Pass - doesn't mean one should.  -It took me a better part of the evening and even the next morning to fully recover from all the "agitation".

I just read where John Fiedler also died this weekend.  He was one of my favorite character actors.

I read that, too, and I will miss him. One of those unmistakable character actors who elevated everything they came into contact with. I played Karl Lindner in a local production of A RAISIN IN THE SUNyears ago, so I've felt a connection to him ever since. (I did not play his juror in TWELVE ANGRY MEN, however. I was #4 - E.G. Marshall's role which is even larger in the play version than in the movie.)
Title: Re:THE RANDY VICAR AND THE FRUIT COMPOTE
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 27, 2005, 09:57:02 AM
Now, as for dangerous rides...

There's an indoor coaster at King's Dominion called "The Outer Limits" - at least that's what it was called the last time I was there.  No real "Outer Limits" branding, it's more space-themed.  Again, it's a totally indoor coaster - like Disney's Space Mountain.  It's being in the dark that makes it seem more "dangerous" and faster than it really is since you can't see where the tracks are going.

When the ride first opened, there were lots of reports of the test dummies coming out of the ride headless!  Needless to say, they had to make some adjustments to the ride before opening to the public.  And when it finally opened to the public, the lines were as long as ever.  It still was a bit of a rough ride, but it was fun.  However, after the first season, they modified the design of the seat.  They removed the head cushions that were on the side of the seats.  Apparently, NOT hitting the sides of your head on the "cushions" was a lot safer than hitting them.

Hmmm...

As for "Mission: Space" - or any of those simulation rides ("Star Wars", "Body Wars", etc.)...  My experience has been that there are enough disclaimers and warnings for potential riders posted along the way.  And they provide ample opportunities to leave the line and the ride.  However, there's so much "peer pressure" from the people your with, the rest of the people in line - especially the little kids... And the people coming off the ride with huge smiles on their faces.  And sometimes looking at some of the people with uneasy faces can be an incentive, encouragement to get on the ride.

But, ultimately, you won't know just how the ride will affect you until you ride it.

As for the recent tragic event at Disneyworld...  I just always wonder at the wisdom and judgement of any parent - and Park - letting anyone under the age of 8, 10, 12... on any sort of ride like that.  -And I've always wondered just how many ages, sizes, heights, etc., they test for in the first place.

*And I've seen more than one instance where I've seen a parent drag a truly reluctant and scared child onto a ride... And then have to deal with the still scared and now sick child afterwards.

For myself, I can't do those types of rides anymore.  My tolerance for being purposely made dizzy and nauseous has dropped over the years.  Thrills - hills, loops, speed, etc, - I can take.  Feeling like I'm in an out of control, speeding vehicle, while watching the visual simulation of said "trip", I can't.

Most excellent vibes and xylophones to all who need them!

Paramount has improved 1000% since five years ago when they did Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Court Jester, etc.  Hopefully, they'll get around to doing new transfers of those.

BK, I know you probably don't plan on getting that many orders from canada, but $7 US shipping is huge.  Especially since it only costs like $1 to mail a cd by US postal service.

Also, since you mentioned that non-US parties could not order yet, i did not even check, but did you end up using Fedex, UPS or just the regular USPS.  Shipping policies are strict here (for buying items vs getting gifts).  And I'm almost afraid to wonder if UPS/Fedex would end up charging huge tax/handling fees.

DR Rodzinski is en route as I type this.  His ever-lovin' Antonia will drop him off in front of my building.

He, I, and two co-workers are going out for dim sum!  He wondered, when I suggested this, if I felt I might need some protection from a crazy person.

I told him we needed extra people so we could get a greater variety of dim sum since the dumplings come in quantities of three or four.  With only two, we wouldn't get to savor a wide variety.  With four, we're going to be in nirvana.

I hope he likes it.  He said he's never had dim sum!

Site has been fine for me today.

Jennifer: We're sending via AIR everywhere outside the US.  Having shipped MANY packages to Canada via AIR I can assure you that none of them cost one dollar.  As I said, even at the six dollar rate I lose money.  I must ship with tracking numbers, so that means either Fed Ex or UPS for the moment.  If it's USPS or UPS, we will list overseas items as "gifts" so as to avoid problems.

DR Rodzinski has never had dim sum?!?!?!?  And he's been living in NYC for how long now?!?!?!?

Thank you, DR Ron Pulliam, for correcting that "deficiency".

Did he try chicken feet?

DR MBARNUM - alas both codes are NOW invalid.  DRMATTH was correct, the sale is over.

I went ahead and pre-ordered THE ADVENTURERS (a different movie, as described yesterday by MR BK) - it was a pre-order so no discount anyway!

I used to have the LP of the soundtrack and remember liking it very much.  Wonder what ever happened to it?  It must be somewhere, everything is somewhere because very FEW things cease to exist!

MR BK - Paramount has always been my favorite Studio!  Betty Hutton, Hope & Crosby, Claudette Colbert, Danny Kaye,  Frances Farmer, Cecil B. DeMille, and VISTAVISION - Motion Picture High Fidelity.

Thanks for the clarification.  I'm sure tracking #s cost more.  I know when former DR Noel sent his cd, it was $1 or $1.50 and he sent it by air, but no tracking.

Btw, I really like the logo at the top of the Kritzerland page.

Finished proofing the galley - but will do another scan through it quickly, just to be sure I've caught everything I can.

Had some good news about a certain large record store in NY, who will be stocking our CDs - the buyer is very excited and we worked out a deal for no returns, which is great.  He said he'd do an endcap, too - which is faboo.

I went to Colony once...the one time I went to New York...and spent almost $500!!  WHAT WAS I THINKING??  I did get the original London Children of Eden three years before the Paper Mill production happened and the London 1776, which I have never seen on eBay or anywhere!  But everything (now that I have been able to compare after-the-fact) was just so expensive.  If I ever get back to New York, I won't go back there.  Well, maybe just to look.
Title: Re:THE RANDY VICAR AND THE FRUIT COMPOTE
Post by: Ben on June 27, 2005, 12:38:24 PM
It's OK to look at Colony but  I would never (probably) buy anything there. It's just SO outrageously expensive. The tourists (sorry George, this isn't a comment against you) buy from them because they think there is no other place to go and they pay the prices which is why, I guess, Colony gets away with it. Other people may have had different experiences but I have also found the staff rather off-putting and sometimes just plain rude. I do not do well around rude staff who are selling overpriced goods so I rarely venture in to the store. Glad to hear that Kritzerland will NOT be sold there.

We have Tower and Virgin here in New York. I may be forgetting another. HMV doesn't have a store anymore, so I'm thinking it's one of the first two. An endcap is a special display place, typically at the end of an aisle (hence the name), though there are not many aisles in Tower and Virgin. The merchandise is right there for you to see and you don't have to search through the other CDs to find what you're looking for. If there is a sale, often the sale items are on "endcaps".

I also disklike Colony for their outrageous mark-ups on items.  And it's not like they "hide" their mark-up with their price sticker placed over the one printed on the item - on the sheet music at least.

And they also sell a bunch of "illegal" stuff too - items that aren't supposed to be for sale in the US, but which their "buyers" have bought over in London and other places, and have brought back to be sold in their store - CDs and sheet music.

I do browse there, but I never buy there.

DR Jennifer - I think the thing to keep in mind is that Kritzerland is a business.  A small one at this point, but still a business.  I have a feeling that if BK was running this more as a "mom and pop" operation with each order individually weighed for actual costs, packaged "personally", etc., the overhead would just not be worth the trouble.  And the additional costs of the time involved would run up the cost of the items and the shipping.

I seriously doubt that Amazon, Tower, or even DeepDiscountCD could or would ship anything for a $1.00-1.50 - tracking or no tracking.  Yes, they may offer Free Shipping from time to time, but that's definitely a loss leader for them.  -And if I'm remembering correctly, it took Amazon.com YEARS to finally turn an actual profit - and shipping and handling charges were the "culprit".

-And, remember, former DR Noel's CD was not a "professional" CD either.  I seriously doubt he had to deal with the AFM, AFTRA or any other media entities.

I feel similarly about Colony. I never buy there, but the store is great fun to browse through. Before I did NUNCRACKERS last winter, I flipped through the score there last July and saw the keys songs were written in so there would be no surprises at auditions.

I also read over the weekend (and confirmed today) that ventriloquist Paul Winchell has died. I always thought he was super talented. Back from lunch:

Meeting DR Rodzinski was a treat.  He seemed to enjoy the dim sum experience (all except the sticky rice, which was a tad sweet for his taste).

Based on our brief 90 minutes at lunch, I can tell you Tom is a wonderful lunch companion and a good conversationalist.  I would really like to have been able to hang out with him for the couple of hours he has to kill before Antonia will pick him up.  Alas, I had to return to work, but I took him to Jack London Square where he can browse and people-watch.  He can even take in a movie if he wants to.    He can also sit on a bench and look across the bay at San Francisco should he be so inclined, or, he could hop a ferry and cross over to San Francisco.

Oh, yes....Tom will always be able to say he was my first.   Hainsie-Kimlet meet-up, that is.  He's the first of our group I've met in person.

The time flew and I had a good time.

Funny story department: I was just forwarded an e-mail that had been sent to the West Coast rep on the talkinbroadway board.  This e-mail came from a voice teacher in Canada.  Seems she saw our young Caitlynne win her various competitions with my song Annie.  Caitlynne's mother had told me that everyone was asking her where they could get the music for the song, and the mother wouldn't tell them.  So, this enterprising voice teacher took the bull by the horns.  Isn't that funny?  I think I shall now create Kritzerland Music Publishers to publish it and some others.

It may not look like Virgin has endcaps, but they are there.  They aren't so much at the end of an aisle, but at the of two sales racks that are positioned back to back.  They fill the dead space at the ends, "capping" them.  If a pair of racks were sitting back to back in an open space in an otherwise empty room, we could still fill the ends of the racks with endcaps.

(Hmmm, maybe this could be an absurdist art project?  Or a commentary piece of some sort?   8))

Oh, and re John Fiedler: He used to live in the same building as my father did in the late 1970s.  My father, in fact, did his taxes (my father had become a CPA after his restaurant went under - my Uncle Saul was a CPA and my father worked with him for the last six years of his life).  My father also did Arthur O'Connell's taxes.  I have a lovely memory of my father and Mr. O'Connell attending the sneak preview of Nudie in Westwood.  I think my father was impressed by the incredible reaction the film got, and I think Mr. O'Connell was a bit shocked by what he'd seen.

Dim Sum menu:

Sorry, no tripe.  No Chicken feet (although here, they've translated that to "chicken paws.")

We had sticky rice, spring rolls, Shanghai dumplings, Siu Mai dumplings, bar-b-q rice rolls, shrimp rice rolls, vegetable dumplings and deep fried shrimp/mango rolls.  The Shanghai and Siu Mai dumplings have ground pork and ground beef fillings, spiced differently; the vegetable dumpling featues a melange of veggies traditionally found in some of their soups;  the bar-b-q-rice rolls have pork, and the shrimp is self-explanatory.

Evening folks.  Well, the test went about as well as could be expected.   Considering this is the 6th IVP I’ve had, one would expect that I would know what to expect---err, right?  I’m just happy that I’m NOT expecting which would be totally unexpected and a whole other story!  What am I talking about?

Anywho, I  expect to know the results of said test in about a week or so.

I had to drive home in the driving rain as well.  It really wasn’t as bad as it used to be.  When I drove the A-Team van, I would get a bath as well the ride.    Somehow, I don’t miss that.

Being an only child, I had to go on all of the rides by myself.  I remember Space Mountain very well.  That was back in the day that I have to wear glasses and the seat was made for two people.

I remember the seat belt not fitting and then they made me take my glasses off.  I was blind and loose in that car.  I think my fingernails are still embedded in the sides of it.  I thought I was going to be thrown out of it for sure.

I was white faced and shaking when I got off.  I remember my Mom asking if I had enjoyed the ride.  Yeah, Mom.  I think I’ll do it again—NOT!

I do enjoy most rides and would like to try the new one at Bush Gardens.  The next time one (or a couple) of you head down to Tampa, let me know.  I can get employee discount tickets from work and I would love to spend the day at Bush.  It’s been years since I’ve been there.

Glad to hear that the site and new Record label are off to a good start.  It must be exciting but I have a feeling it might also be the reason your having a hard time sleeping, BK.  And I don’t blame you.

DR SWW, I hope you haven’t heard anything more from that “lady” about Peggy.  She may have just said she was going to call but didn’t really do it.  At least I hope so.  I’ve thought about that more then you know.

I can’t speak for DR Jane or DR Ginny but chicken feet are off my menu if they are on the walking tour.  I’m not eating any weird stuff.  Forgive me but:   No way, Jose!

You will learn what the people I work with know---Danise will eat any kind of food*  (Note the asterisks)

*EXCEPT
Hearts, lungs, gizzards, mountain oysters, feet, hands, tongues, livers, fish, shell food, lobsters, snails, squid, octopus, snakes, lizards, possums, raccoon, Nyquil, etc, etc, and of course, etc.

The rest of the list that follows is way to long to type.   :D

SWW that goes for me too.

Danise you certainly may speak for me!!  ;D I want tofu!

Re shipping to Canada I definitely urge you to refrain from using UPS or FedEx, the regular US mail is the only way to go as we have learned from sad experience.

My inlaws live in Canada and we had been shipping their Christma, birthday, anniversary etc gifyts, always clearly marked as a "gifts" and always in values below the tariff prices.  What my inlaws took several years to advise us was that UPS was charging a fee of $30 - $50  CND before they would release the package

We only ship by USPS now and we have never had a problem since,

Hi Vixmom.  Have things calmed down a bit?

Well no, but its getting alittle better, I may have my car back soon

Basically it was a little known (by me) clause in m extended mechanical breakdown warrantly that said if the value of the repair was a certain percentage of the value of the car they could choose to  "total out"  the car

On Saturday I took my car to the mechanic for a squeal in the brakes which turned into two rear calipers, four rotors and four sets of brake shoes and pads and a master cylinder.  The inspector from Geico  approved the job on Monday evening but noticed a leak from the transmission pan.

So after the brake job was done (my share of the bill was nearly $400, Geico paid the rest) I brought the car to the transmission guy  down the road.  He said I needa rebuilt transmission because it was slipping at high speeds... Well I rarely get to high speeds as I drive in rush hour traffic on the LIE where 40 MPH is considered  'moving"  and local drivng which is all stop and go and 30 MPH
but the inspector was called (he didn't show up until Friday afternoon) who agreed the transmission was shot and said the car would be totaled....he said this to the mecahnic, never called me , never out in the paperwork and went on vacation for two weeks.

Ther first i heard of this "total" thing was a call from mechanic on Saturday morning amd a call to my insurance co  verified this but could give me no details as to what this would mean to me
and the department that handles "total claims" isn't open on the weekend.  I was promised a callback  by Tuesday night.

Since I had already beenwithout my car for 9 days, i deciede this morning  to be the squeaky wheel and es, after several hours I finally got some results.

They are paying me about $2300, which means I can do the transmission repair and have about $800 left over to put away for the next incident.. but they are revoking my extended arrantly covergae from here on in.

Ayt least it is resolved and Ican get my car back... yes its 10 years old, it has 175000 miles on it, but by gum the body is sound, the entire brake system was just redone , the radiator was replaced last year and its been given a new serpentine4 chain  thingy so ho[pefully I can get another year or so out of it

Wow that is a lot of miles in ten years.  My last car only had about 74,000 miles in 13 years (my current one is bound to have more).  Did you buy it new or used?

I’m glad it all worked out.  After paying for all the other repairs it would have been upsetting to loose the car.  So… good car vibes for the next year!

Well, since we talked about it this morning, I pulled BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S off the shelf and watched it in the late afternoon and early evening. The transfer was given a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, so that's something, at least.

And when it was over, I wanted to have an Audrey Hepburn festival and pull out CHARADE next, but I resisted. I need to work through some unseen DVDs this week.

I bought it brand new off the lot.  But my commute is 60 miles round trip five days a week and that's not counting any other travel, of which I do quite a bit.  Plus its been to Florida and back four times

Well if some of the people I was talking with were in the room with me instead of a couple of states away  it might have made headlines   ;D

I took the Mr's car, but that meant  reorganizng the morning and afternoon commutes and rearranging some of my closings... I had to borrow my dad's car one day as well...

We approved the repairs today so hopefully y tomorrow the car will nbe back, except I noticed that the brakes were still a little sponguy so they obioulsy didn't bleed them properly so it will have to go back to the brake shop before I can take it back for good...... >:(

I just love the new color Keith painted our powder room.  I attempted to find a sample on line because I don’t know how to describe it.  We went from a white to a rich warm color.

Even more I love the new limestone pedestal sink with the bronze faucet.  Soon we will have a new mirror to go over the sink.  We are waiting for the company that made the faucet to release their new light fixtures that match, and then the room with be completed.

Yesterday we found a new soap dish (hey, not as easy a thing to do as one might expect) and an artificial flower decoration to sit on the back of the toilet, along with the Kleenex box.  Now I need to find a few nice hand towels.

Keith has chosen the perfect three pieces of artwork to place on the wall.  Well, two of them had been in there already and the third was on the wall just outside the room.  The wall coloring truly enhances the pictures.

Maybe one day we can begin the kitchen project.

Good Evening!

Back from the show...

Ehh...

I had a weird night.  It truly felt like I was jumping back in after two weeks off - which I was.  There was also an understudy on for Donna, as well as an understudy for Sam - in other words, the main couple - so the energy was a little weird there too.  In any case... Enough of them, back to me!

:-\

I didn't have a bad show, but there was one section where I ended up second and triple guessing myself, so...  Ah, well...  At least that spot was in the first act - and I had a pretty good second act.

But unless I get called back in sometime this week, that was my last Mamma Mia! performance for now.  I'll be stopping back in Saturday between shows to join the crew for dinner.

However...

I guess it's time for me to buckle-down, and get in gear for my move to New York City.

:)

Well, since I finally got the update for Finale for my Mac...

Hmmm...

Larry, you mentioned margaritas up by you. Perhas when we all return from the 4th of July (you'll be in DC, correct, and I'll be in Virginia and Rodzinski will still be on the Left Coast) we can gather at the watering hole and snarf down decadent nachos and have 2 for 1 margaritas then I will stagger home on the subway. Perhaps I will become a headline in the Weekly World News.

I wanna margarita too!

Oh...

And I've actually never had chicken feet or chicken paws myself.  I just see them all the time.  Appartently, they are quite - to use a former word of the day - UNCTIOUS.

However, I have had tripe.  I usually get it as one of the 'toppings' when I order pho.  It too is UNCTIOUS.  And the traditional Mexican "restorative", menudo, is traditionally made with tripe.

DR vixmom - WOW!  That was a lot of work on the car.  However, since my car is currently 13 years old, and has 214,500 miles on it, I sort of know what you're going through.  I usually have to my breaks redone every two years or so - apparently, I'm a "hard" braker.  -As opposed to a heart-breaker, which I am most certainly not.  In any case...  I've gone through two sets of front-end rotors and one set on the rear.  Boy! are those suckers expensive.  I also did have some transmission work done a few years ago, but that's been the extent of the major work done on the car besides the usual routine maintenance.  In the 13 years I've owned the car, I think I've only had to spend about $4,000 on major repairs.  Which is practically nothing compared to what I've heard others have to pay for a single repair on their newer cars.  And as I've mentioned before, it still gets about 35-40mpg.  Not bad at all.

*And I have a Ford Escort Wagon which always seems to surprise people.  "You have a 13-year old Ford?!?! And it still works?!?!"  Yes.  Yes it does.  And according to a very informal 'study' that my mechanic has done, there are a bunch of Ford Escort wagons from 1992-94 that are still on the road and running fine.  Yes, they may look a bit worn on the outside, but the engines are in (surprisingly) good shape.
Title: Re:THE RANDY VICAR AND THE FRUIT COMPOTE
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 27, 2005, 09:43:31 PM
OH....

DR vixmom - I guess what I was trying to say is that it sounds like most of the work you had done - at least the brake system - is just stuff that had to get done since that's stuff that does wear down over time.  When was the last time you had any major work done of the brakes?  Yes, I know you were inconvenienced by not having your car for a couple of days - and the sticker shock for the repair probably was not painless either - but if you look at things in the long run, I hope it's not really that "bad".

And I have GEICO too, and I've always had wonderful service from them.  It did seem a bit strange that they took a few days to take care of things.  However, since GEICO is headquartered here in the DC area, maybe there are just more agents around here to handle on-site inspections/claims.

*Oh, and I've "splurged" since day one with them on the rental car reimbursement add-on. It has come in handy a couple of times over the years.  Is that option available in New York State?

I have a Ford Escort (not a wagon) and I have just over 91,000 miles.  I bought it new in June 1998 with only 20 miles on it.  I've had all the recommended servicing, usually $500-700 every 30,000 miles.  It's the only car that I've ever owned where I've done this.  The only other car that has lasted longer (so far) was my Subaru Justy that I had for eight years (I got it used with 14,100 miles).  But I had to have a second engine put in (not a rebuilt engine, mind you) and literally ran it into the ground...I didn't get the oil changed very often. ::) Anyway, I've learned my lesson and plan to have this car as long as I possibly can.  Mainly just to see how long it can last.  We'll see!

I just finished watching the BK recommended SWING HOSTESS starring the lilton Martha Tilton! It was a very fun movie...although I am not understanding where they got the title...yes she does sing swing, but she is never a hostess in this movie.

And the print was much better then I expected it to be!

This  box of 50 musicals is well worth the $29 dollar price...however, you can get it on Ebay or from sellers on Amazon for around $18.00...that is less then 30 cents a movie....and there are some very cool and obscure musicals in this set!

I mentioned earlier that this past weekend, I got the DVD to the entire series of "Tabitha" with Lisa Hartman and Karen Morrow (and the original pilot of "Tabatha" with our very own BK).  In the mail today came three free (just had to pay shipping) CDs:  I Had a Ball with the aforementioned Karen Morrow (I love her!) and both the original Broaday cast recording and movie soundtrack to The Music Man.  I've owned the records to all of these for years (and I've never listened to I Had a Ball), but had never gotten them on CD.  It was about time, especially since I had free CDs coming from the BMG Music club.  I only have to pay $8.37 shipping for all three brand new (CD club edition) CDs!

I will not talk about rehearsal tonight.  It was one of THOSE.  Nothing went as planned and when I asked an actor to change ONE line in a sequence, suddenly all H - E - Double Hockey Sticks broke loose and NOBODY in the scene could remember ANYTHING.  And of course they declared that changing the order of ONE line would require all new blocking.

I just wanted him to say:  "Jan, this is George" a little bit earlier, so Jan could leave the stage.....

Oh and the girl from Cloverdale doesn't know when to turn on the fan to blow the curtains, so she decided to come out onstage during the scene to ask me.  But I couldn't answer her because I was upstairs doing the light cues, because Phoebe is gone to church camp for two days.

I think I will pretend we didn't have a rehearsal tonight, and count tomorrow night's as the first rehearsal for us this week.

I want nachos and margaritas, too!  Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much my stomach would appreciate such foods at the moment.  The flu bug that hit Ann on Saturday decided to strike me today.  Had hoped it may be just a little morning thing that would pass quickly, but I realized that was not the case with every passing mile on my drive to work, so I went in merely to tell them I was taking the day off sick.  Slept most of the day away, which seems to at least have kept it from getting worse.  We'll see what the morning brings... not that I mind not being able to score those fershluganah standardized tests...
