Post by: bk on July 01, 2005, 12:02:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've jumped from June to namely July, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're still trying to get over their June bugs.

Yup...but I'm not. ;) Actually, I need to do my bills and was going to, but I got carried away surfing the 'net (nothing disreputable!) and have decided to do my bills later today.  So, now I will say "Good Night!"

I should be asleep and yet I am not asleep.  I have that clutching stuff going on again (acid reflux?), and I feel like I constantly have to clear my throat, which drives me crazy.  I'm about to take some NyQuil - of course, I shall then be rather useless in the morning hours, but what they heck.

I'm up early as usual   All alone here at HHW. :'(

I'm listening to Steven Halpern's "Spectrum Suite," and the "Somethig's Gotta Give" soundtrack with all its great French songs.

BK-- I've never seen "Heller in Pink Tights"-- just read about it, so I'll be interested to see what you think.

Feel good, everyone.  Now, let's all go take a nap!

DR MATTH mentioned about this yesterday;

Quote
PORGY AND BESS (with Sammy Davis' numbers as bonus tracks since Cab Calloway did them on the official soundtrack)

Question for DR MATTH and/or other Dear Readers.
I watched “Porgy and Bess” on DVD a few days ago and I liked it, though, for some reason, I couldn’t give it my full attention and, finally, finished it on my third  trial.  I’m interested in a few songs in it and would like to know how many CDs from Porgy and Bess have been released so far (as far as you know), and also what your favorite /recommended one is.  I think I’ll have a CD from the opera.

By the by, I got to see the video of DR Kurt's production of MOBY DICK! the other night. He was really great as Ahab! I thought the whole production was exactly what it was supposed to be. The cast was talented, funny and "got" the show. I was very impressed.

Oh, and if you haven't guessed by now, I did end up sleeping in a bit this morning.  I was not exactly tossing and turning last night, but my mind just kept going and going, figuring out travel plans, times, possible schedule changes, conflicts, etc...  However, after about an hour of all that - and realizing that my schedule is indeed clear for the next six days - and I also now know what my schedule will be once I get back - I did drift off to sleep.  So...

Hello Imbeanie welcome aboard
Title: Re:NAMELY JULY
Post by: JoseSPiano on July 01, 2005, 07:27:32 AM
DR Hisaka - There a couple of complete recordings of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess".  The "classic" one - among others - is the Houston Grand Opera production on RCA/BMG (I believe).  My favorite is a Simon Rattle's version for EMI/Angel - which may have been the version you watched on video.  My all-time favorite rendition of "Summertime" is on that recording - which was based on the Glyndeborne production in England.  Harolyn Blackwell just floats on those words and notes, and her slow-as-a-hot-summer-day-in-Charleston tempo is, well, amazing.

I'm sure other DRs can chime in with more details and suggestions for highlights discs if you don't want to make the investment in a multi-disc set.

Yep, the clutching sounds like acid reflux.  -And, unfortunately, the Italian food you had for dinner - and even the Nyquil - may not be the best things for it.  So...

I'd at least consult with a doctor or nurse over the phone if you can't see someone right now in person.  Maybe you should be taking something like Tagamet, Pepcid, etc.  Or even just go to Walgreen's and speak to a pharmacist.  Again, acid reflux is no fun.

MattH, the Reno gang got back on the force when it turned out that the DA was crooked and out to kill them all.  He tricked them into the desert and tried to kill them but they  in their incompetent way kept him talking until rescue arrived and gotten the DA's confession on tape.  Their insane babbling was, a la Inspector Cousteau, vieweed as excellent police work and they were all reinstated.

Unfortunately I forgot to watch this past Tuesday so I missed their first day back... I'm sure I'll be able to catch a reerun befor next Tuesday if I try hard enough.

The Theater Mania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings lists seven recordings of PORGY AND BESS worth discussing. The recordings which get their highest five star ratings are:

1. the Decca Broadway 1940/1942 Original Broadway Cast members recording

2. The Columbia studio cast recording made in 1951 and on two CDs.

3. The Houston Grand Opera Cast from 1976 (which also played Broadway). It's 3 CDs and would be my choice if I didn't have any other PORGY recordings.

Thank you, vixmom, for this information. I'll have to try to find that episode because it sounds like fun. This week, they have four prospects for a new officer, all of whom show the idiots how police work should be done. Naturally, they spend the entire show ragging on the new recruits' efforts.

I watched this Tuesday's Reno 911, but missed last week's!  Darn. >:( Yes, this week they were "trying out" new recruits.  They had several choices but one woman (whose name no one could remember) was the best of the bunch.  She had arrested a whole bunch of people by herself while the other officers just let her.  It was all very funny!

I'm up, I'm up.  I managed to get another three hours of sleep, and I'm sure I'll just fall asleep at some point today, hopefully not whilst driving the motor car.

I don't think there is a "perfect" Porgy and Bess, but I do enjoy the Houston Grand Opera CD (I believe they brought that production to the Ahmanson, and it was quite good when I saw it).  The Sony release has its moments, but it's mono.  The Simon Rattle has excellent things in it, too, but overall, if I want to hear Porgy I always go back to the Houston recording.

Congrats on the employment to DRJOSE.  They are lucky to get you!

First dress rehearsal tonight.  Pray for Rosemary's baby!

MR BK mentioned The Browning Version in the notes today, and speaking of matriculation....

There is a Dean Stockwell film made when he was a "child" actor called THE HAPPY YEARS that I love.  I have only seen it a few times, but it was also about schoolboys - although I think set in the US.  Scotty Beckett and Darryl Hickman were a couple of the other boys.  And Leo G. Carroll was one of the headmasters.

I particularly remember one scene:  All of the boys decided to humiliate a young girl (children can be so cruel) - and so on one calling day - EVERY boy in the school showed up at her door.  By the end of the afternoon, the parlor was full....as each boy sat down he declared: "I have just seen Miss Maude Adams in 'Peter Pan.'  I like Maude Adams."  And then every boy in the room would say, in turn: "I like Maude Adams." .....

The girl ran from the room crying....

But other than that - it's a funny and sweet movie.  I wish I could see it again.  Directed by William Wellman....not sure...but probably TCF, maybe RKO.   :)

We've discussed the opera of The Fly before - Pogue knows about it.

When season three of Doris Day comes out, not only are they including the DD version of the pilot I did for her company (Young Love), they're also including the non-DD version.  It all lives on.

Again, for those New York based HHWers... I think what I'd like to do is head back from Poughkeepsie on Thursday morning, and then spend the night in the City, and then head back down to DC Friday afternoon, after lunch.  Sounds like a plan to me.  What say you?

Yes, MR BK, I anxiously awaiting the seasons AFTER the Doris on the Farm episodes.

Same here, DR JRand. That's why I haven't gotten the first season. In season 2 she starts commuting to San Francisco to work, and by season 3, she's living there permanently. I'll start collecting with Season 2.

Quite enjoyed TOY STORY this afternoon, but the high definition version last night was naturally just that little bit sharper and with more vibrant color. Still, the DVDs are more than excellent, and I won't be breaking any land or speed records to get a high definition DVD player until they come way down in price which will take a couple of years, whenever they're introduced. Looks like they're not going to make it by the fourth quarter of this year as Toshiba wanted.

I'm still hoping the two sides can agree on a single format.

This must be the dog days of summer, baby.  You DON'T want me to start bitch-slapping, do you?  I am in that mode, baby.

I went to Grant's and we finished the galley fixes and printed out a new copy.  We then spent two hours monkeying with ideas for the cover - and, towards the end, came up with one that we both are really fond of.  We'll tinker with it a bit more, but I think we've found it.

This weekend, I'll re-proof the new galley - I've already found five more things we missed.  As most of you know from my rantings with my other books, this seems like a never-ending process - you proof and proof, think you've got it all, and then you find something else.  At some point, we'll just lock it and if we miss a thing or two we'll be far ahead of most books published these days, which are so sloppy and so rife with errors that you just sit and scratch your head.

Hello, everone!  We finished up early in the Music Division, around 2:30, so we decided to see if we could move our train reservatins up from 7:00 to 3 or 4.  We just missed the 3:00 train but we changed tickets for the 4:00 Metroliner.  I've just finished catching up on all the posts since Wednesday.

Yes, DRTomovoz, I'm very lucky with folk named Tom; my brother Tom is two years young than I, and I love him dearly.  My friend Tom Murray, who's been assistign me on  BABES IN TOYLAND is another lucky acquaintance, as are you and DRTCB.

DRHisaka, I've heard most of the PORGY AND BESS recordings in its musical theatre incarnations; I've never heard the Cleo Laine or Mel Torme jazz versions. While I'm fond of excerpts, PORGY is an opera and I prefer to hear it complete.  My favorite is the Houston Grand Opera recording:  the cast is in real character from so many performances (there's no better Maria than the late great Carol Brice), and no one conducts the piece better than the under-appreciated John de Maine.  There was a broadcast of the New York City Opera's wonderful production around three years ago, and I wish that would come out on DVD.  I am not a fan of Trevor Nunn's eccentricities in the Glyndebourne production on DVD.

Yes, we did make a couple of discoveries in 1903 BABES IN TOYLAND research.  I have no memory of what it was I unearthed, but DRJose was able to decipher an important quote in Victor Herbert's handwriting that has eluded all of us for four years!  Tom Murray discovered the name of a copyist Herbert used, Charles Gisling, who's addressed as "Mein lieber Gisling" on the first page of the Act One Finale.  Oh, yes, I discovered "Reuben Glue," a parody of Victor Herbert songs with lyrics by Anne Caldwell for David Montgomery and Fred Stone (stars of the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ and THE RED MILL) to perform in Herbert's 1912 version of Cinderella, THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.

I don't have the Mel Torme PORGY, but I have the Cleo Laine/Ray Charles PORGY and the Ella Fitzgeral/Louis Armstrong PORGY (and if I remember correctly, those two were recorded about 20 years apart by the same producer).  These can only be listened to as jazz recordings, much like BK's Sondheim in Jazz series, not as any kind of a cast recording (they're not the whole show).  But if you love jazz, they're both very different and both very good (in my humble opinion, IMHO in Internet lingo).

Hello people.  It has been an interesting day.  The seller's  at our morning closing  didn't realize that the people buying their house were planning on living there... they were most suprised when told they were supposed to be delivering the keys and vacant possession.  They had not only not started packing, they had'nt even begun looking for a new place to live!  They seemed to think that these nice people had come along and were going to give them half a mill for their house and then just let them stay in it indefinitely.

When their very embarrassed  attorney said , But I explained you needed to be out of the house." the wife replied , "I didn't know you meant today, I thought you meant eventually!"

My goodness, I go E&T for a couple days and I come back to find a lovely new photo for DR Hisaka and DR Jason has returned!  Welcome back, good sir.

My E&T ways shall continue through the weekend.  Ann and I have decided to jump in the car this evening and make a whirlwind weekend trip to Reno.  One of my best friends from college lives there, which is a wonderful bonus for housing costs.  Another pair of college friends are down there this weekend visiting the first friend as well, so it'll be a nice CWU music department reunion of sorts.  Also, neither Ann nor myself have ever been to Reno, and we have a bit of a travel bug in us at the moment, so we looked at the 12-hour drive and decided, "Oh, what the hell."  Bring on the air conditioning!

The last closing the people were sensible but the bank was not as I had a nitwit from an out of state trying to convince me that it was necessary for me to record a mortgage for $0.00 to "protect their interest" I eventually was able to persuade her to let me speak to her manager who finally made her see reason.

Oh, and I was at a  closing  last night until 6:30 waiting for a bank to call me back with an approval on my HUD-1, when I finally gave up on them and called them I was answered by a recording saying the offices were closed and my efforts to reach a living  human all resulted in voice mail.

I received a phone call at noon today  from the person I was originally speaking to last night around 5:15, the same one who went home after promising to review my HUD and call me right back... she had a change she wanted made and initialed by the borrowers and she  was quite suprised to find that the borrowers weren't still there in my office 20 hours after we first spoke... did she think we were all just gonna camp out until she felt like getting back to us?!

12 hours in a car, even with someone you love, well, I just couldn't imagine anything worse. But I'm not a car travel person at all. All those car trips when I was a little boy are the reason it's so awful for me now. How 'do, ladies and gents. Jed, thanks for the welcome back - it's good to see you again!

It's 11:53 in the p.m. and according to the weather reports, its supposed to be cool right now. Well, it ain't! Right now it's 75 degrees with 88% humidity. 88%!!! The carpet in my bedroom is actually damp because of the humidity. It's disgusting and I'm over it. I'm supposedly getting an air conditioner on Tuesday, so hopefully the heat situation will be cleared up soon.

"War of the Worlds" was actually a pretty good flick. It's one of the first truly satisfying movies I've seen in a long while. It was worth the money.

Laura: Sorry you're having a bad day. I understand. I had to put myself to bed because I was in such a foul mood. It's too hot to suffer fools - gladly or otherwise. I'm a person who needs alone time in order to truly enjoy having other people around. Well, between work and having three roommates (I'm including the boyfriend of one of my real roommates), I never get a minute to myself and it's driving me insane. My level of grumpy goes up 1000% the second I walk in the door and see someone in the living room. So I went to bed at 7:30. My dad called at 10:00, so I pulled myself out of the pool that was my bed and had some dinner and now I'm catching up on email and things. And that's been my night.

TROCADERO (1944) was sort of a cute movie...but it had some fantabulous 1940s swing and big band music...which is odd since most of the film takes place in the early 1930s.

Also in the mail today, I received the movie soundtracks to "Doctor Dolittle" and "Bye Bye Birdie."  I've never had these on CD and since I was eligible to get some free CDs from the BMG Music Club, I chose these. ;D

For the rest of the Topic of the Day:

In my CD player at work:  Disc one of three of a radio show that Tim Hauser of The Manhattan Transfer did in 1982!  They were sent to me from this guy who lives in Utah that I trade TMT stuff with.  I'm making booklets for him and he gives me copies of the CDs.  I think it's a fair trade!

In my DVD player (from Netflix):  "Gay Games VI:  Sydney 2002:  Under New Skies:  Disc 1."  I turned in one movie yesterday and haven't received the next ("Name of the Rose" for my roommate) and I also have out "Latter Days" about a Mormon boy who comes out in California...and it has a happy ending (but not without a lot of angst).  The problem with "LD" is that I have no idea where it is!  I think it's somewhere buried in my bedroom, but I haven't been able to find it. :-\ I figure as long as I keep it, I don't have to pay for it...yet.

Thanks to MBarnum for the Portland photos and the strange motion picture on DVD.  Yes, I've watched a few more of the musicals - saw The Fabulous Dorseys, which is mildly enjoyable (one of the reasons it's only mildly enjoyable is the fact that the two Dorseys are played by the two Dorseys, who are both really bad as actors).  Some nice music, and a wonderful and large role for my muse Margaret's dad, Dave Willock.  Directed by Alfred Green, who would do better with the similar Jolson Story.  Also watched Sunny, which has some nice Kern/Hammerstein songs (including the hit, Who), but is completely strange and surreal.  I liked Anna Neagle okay, and Ray Bolger does some terrific dancing.  Am now watching Calendar Girl, a Republic musical with some fun numbers.

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

Well... It's just past 2:30am here on the East Coast... and my train to Penn Station leaves at 6:20am...  -You do the math.

:-\

In any case...

Since I had prepped and packed earlier this afternoon, I decided to to have a nice night out.  Dinner and a movie.  I called Andy up, and he was also up for a night out too.  -Andy's father went into the hospital a few days ago.  His doctor's have told them that it was either "emphysema" or "mild congestive heart failure" (how can heart failure be mild?).   Some choice, huh?  His father's condition has stabilized, but I just wanted to see if Andy needed a little break from his hospital watch.  He did.

We ended up having dinner at "The Tavern" in Great Falls.  Nice place.  Good food.  Very family friendly.  Our waiter, however, was a little erratic, for lack of a better word.  After a while, our dinner entertainment became watching the faces at the other tables that our waiter was waiting on each time he made a mistake or seemed oblivious to their, "Excuse me!".  But my meatloaf was very tasty, and Andy devoured his Cobb Salad.

For the movie portion of our evening, we settled on "Bewitched".  Very cute.  A good movie, not a great one.  And the last third just seems to fall apart and ramble.  A good ten to fifteen minutes could have been easily cut out.  However, Shirley MacLaine really does a nice job of chewing the scenery - on purpose - and the supporting does a nice job too.  -Even if some of them just suddenly disappear from the movie.  Some nice laughs, and the ending sequence ties things up nicely.

Once I got home, I decided for some unknown reason to clean my bathroom.  So, I Scrubbing Bubbled the tub and basin.  Then I proceeded to finish packing everything.  Thankfully, I finally found the medium-sized luggage with wheels on it.  And once I found that, I repacked everything in there.  Then I tidied up my room, and now...

DR MBarnum - Have a great time at Lake Merwin.  I seem to recall visiting there when my family lived in Seattle.  Nice views of Mt. Saint Helen if I'm remembering correctly.

And don't forget your camera!  Take pictures!  Lots of pictures.  ;)

Well... At least I got up to Page Six....

However, I'm way to tired to dance right now, and I really should be in bed...

Well... I can get a nice two hour power nap now, so...  And then, hopefully, I'll be able to grab a few zzz's on the train(s).

Goodnight.

I'm listening to the movie soundtrack to "Bye Bye Birdie" and it's great!  So, in honor of that, here's the Page Six Dance.  A scene from the Encores production of the show:
