Title: BOWLING WITH SONDHEIM
Post by: bk on July 09, 2005, 01:14:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're plum tuckered out from reading the notes, you must now try to solve the trivia question, and you must also now post until the cows come home - they're doing a Sondheim revue right now.

Like an idiot, I forgot both my camera AND my cell phone, so I took no pictures.  I also forgot to bring my glasses, but I could see pretty well, plus they have huge video monitors.

I'm down to 30 songs, now...I started with 43!

Okay, in addition to 10 individual songs (when I narrow my list down to 10), I'm including the entire scores to Follies and Sunday in the Park with George.  I can't pick individual songs from them...so I won't. ;D

I've already edited my ten list George.
I love the Johanna Quartet from Act 2 of Sweeney and many of the comic songs too.
"Goodbye For Now" is another I may well have listed.
I've opted not to include songs for which he did not write the music so some gems have been passed over.
No other composer has given me such choices.

"The House For Mama" from Wise Guys/Gold (not from Bounce!) nearly made my list too.

In my case - what can you do on a Saturday night?
(I'm about to got to a 21st birthday - I'd rather listen to Sondheim - even his Sondheim sings Sondheim)

I probably prefer Kander & Ebb musicals but it is the Sondheim songs that I appreciate for their staying power and their "art". Did someone say "Art Isn't Easy".
I looked at George's list and thought about the wonderful construction of "A Weekend In The Country".

Yikes 10!     Only 10!

If it was Andrew Lloyd Webber I might have difficulty name 10 songs of his that were favorites.

And  to think both of then were born on the same day!!!

I decided that my list had to have music and lyrics and written for the stage only

Children Will Listen
I'm Sill Here
Ladies Who Lunch
Losing My Mind
Loving You
Move On
Our Time
Someone In a Tree
Sunday
We Do Not Belong Together

Cut from the list
Children and Art
So Many People
Too Many Mornings
Weekend In the Country

And these songs didn't make the list because......
The songs that were written for the stage and were cut or for films
Can That Boy Foxtrot
The Gaggle of Geese
Goodbye For Now
I Never Do Anything Twice (One of the Greatest S & M song ever written)
It Takes All Kinds
Multitudes Of Amy
No Mary Anne
Silly People
There Won't Be Trumpets
There's Always A Woman

Appreciated the report on the SOndheim event, and was really worried when I read about Angela Lansbury's mishap. She's elderly now and has had knee replacement surgery before, so that really scared me. Hope she is OK. How great that she and Len Cariou reprised that great, great song.

Nice to read about the star-studded audience, too. So glad so many of them have an appreciation for Stephen Sondheim.

4. "The Miller's Son"

I read more about the WIZARD OF OZ set. It will indeed have a John Fricke commentary, but the description said a NEW commentary. I don't know how his original commentary could be improved, but at least there will be one, and I can retire the laserdisc set to the attic.

I saw in the TV listings this morning that NBC is showing a couple of episode of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA tonight. I'm assuming this is the new version of the show playing on cable, and I've never seen it, so I'm looking forward to giving it a spin tonight. Hopefully, NBC will show it in high definition which will make the viewing experience even more enjoyable.

The new cat Walty is in the house. And under the bed in the music room. He probably would do this even if there was no other cat here, since cats need to get used  to their surroundings. I can relate. When I move to a new place I can't unpack and relax for a week or two. I have to physically feel at home. As for Killbot, she seemed curious to look at Walty in his cage. Their didn't seem any ill will, but we aren't letting her into the music room until Walty comes out from under the bed.

I too am dismayed at trying to choose ONLY ten Sondheim songs for my list.  I certainly am not one of those fawns - BUT anyone who denies Mr Sondheim's talent is - well - just living in denial.  His music and lyrics speak to me in a way that no one else's do.  So.....  I will just go off the top of my head.....and choose those of his written alone & with others.

1. Some People - this will always be MY FAVORITE!
2. Children Will Listen - props to the original singer of this song, never topped in her performance by ANYONE else
3.  Being Alive - another great recorded performance
4.  Ladies Who Lunch - singer & song linked forever
5.  Comedy Tonight - one of the...if not THE... best opening songs ever.
6.  Tonight - such longing and anticipation
7.  Together Wherever We Go - fun and perfect
8.  Company - title tune
9.  Our Time-Not a Day Goes By - had to put them together, couldn't leave one out.
10. Send In the Clowns - don't bother, they're here.

Apropos a la TOD, I will tell a story I have written here before.  8)

Many years ago in the 1980's, before DRJOEY was born, I attended a Sondheim event with my friend Suzanne.  It was at a music school in Chicago, and the program included much of Mr Sondheim's music played on two pianos - Ferrante & Teicher style.  After that, Mr Sondheim took the stage and answered questions from the audience.  Most the students asking questions began by introducing themselves and then giving LONG lists of shows they had been in (some by SS, some not).  He quickly grew impatient and began interrupting these introductions, but asking...what is your question, but he didn't leave the stage until the line had dissipated.  I HAD a question, but didn't join the line.

Afterwards he headed up the aisle of the auditorium....stopped in his tracks, went back to the stage and looked at the music left on the piano.  My assumption is he was looking for the arranger's name.  He found what he was looking for....went "Hrumph" and left.  LOL  ;D

A few days later a friend gave me an address to write to SS.  I asked my question in a letter.  A few days later - back came an answer to my question AND the photograph I asked for.   ;D ;D ;D

Neither of us mentioned Chicago again.

I'm up, I'm up.  I forgot to tell the story of The Bee.  Prior to our boxmates' arrival, was the arrival of The Bee.  Now, even at that point, there were thousands of people sitting in boxes and elsewhere, having their food.  But, this bee decided that our food was the most delicious-looking and smelling, so he came to our box.  We didn't like having a bee as a visitor and tried, gingerly, to shoo him away.  But, this bee was not having it.  This bee was simply enamored of our shrimp cocktail sauce and the chicken breasts and he would not be dissuaded from landing on them.  We gingerly shooed him and shooed him, but to no avail.  It became quite comical and neighboring box dwellers began to enjoy the show.  Finally, I said to Tammy, "We must kill the bee."  The bee, as if in agreement, landed on one of the shrimp and stayed there.  Tammy and I both picked up napkins, moved them close to the shrimp and the bee, and on the count of three we both swiftly moved in and we got the little sucker and twisted it to death in the napkin and then deposited the deceased bee in the bushes.

The End.

Here is my list, mostly comprised of songs I love to sing along to:

Being Alive
What Can You Lose
Every Day a Little Death (this song always impacts me so strongly)
Unworthy of Your Love
Not a Day Goes By
No One is Alone
Move On
Not Getting Married Today
Losing My Mind
The Miller's Son

Also close behind are Another Hundred People, Something's Coming, and The Ladies Who Lunch- which I love being sung by Elaine Stritch but is also my favorite scene in the movie Camp.

It works well to give the new cat a space where he feels safe and to give him attention in the space while allowing the cat that was already there run of the house except for the music room and to give her lots of attention. Then to slowly introduce the two cats.  I did this with my cats, by the second day they were reaching uder the door to see each other and by the third day were curled up on the couch together.  They are wonderful friends now.

Yes very nice avatar DR TPUNK.

DRBEN - you will be pleased to know that my question to Mr Sondheim was:

Is there any lyric you have written or song & lyric you have composed that still gives you the same emotional response when you hear it today as when you first wrote it?

And his answer was "Someone in a Tree" - and in fact, the PACIFIC OVERTURES score in general.  There are others he said he favors, but PO is a personal favorite of his.

I wish we had known about that 18 years ago it might have made life easier.  But then 34 years ago, unknowingly (the new cat was very ill) we separated the new cat and it didn’t work.  One of our cats disliked the new cat for the rest of her life.  It wasn’t a major problem unless they both wanted to enjoy my lap at the same time. ;D

I belong to the Sondheim e-mail listserv and someone posted a link with pictures of the Sondheim Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl.  Click HERE (http://lang.dailynews.com/socal/gallery2/?folder=news/070905_sond) to see the pictures.  The only problems are that they list the song that Carol Burnett and Eric McCormack as "I'm Not Getting Married Today" (it's "Getting Married Today") AND they incorrectly identify Len Cariou as James Barbour!  The song title I can understand...it's actually a prominant line within the song, but how could they get Len Cariou's name wrong?? :P

I have a few autographs...see the Laurel Massé autograph that I posted earlier today!  (Again, THANK YOU JOSE!!)  But I don't have a lot.  I do have autographs of all the other members of The Manhattan Transfer, but I got them on eBay.  I've never met them in person, just seen them in concert.

Well, I must be going.  I have places to go, people to see, things to do.  And in a couple of hours, I have to help my sister with some projects around her house...putting up towel bars and mirrors, going to Home Depot and getting other things for her "ideas" (which are usually very good), things like that.  But I said that I'd help, so help I must.  Be back later!

And, of course, I was thrilled to see that Marily Berman was in attendance!

Well folks in my never ending search for everything Bruce Kimmel I came across three alternate covers for some of Michelle Nicastro recordings.

For Toonful I came across a German release and I believe Korean (At least I found it on a Korean website)

And one for Reel Imagination from a Chinese website
(http://www.brucekimmel.com/images/Reel%20Imagination%20(Chinese).jpg)

First Nudie Musical where they give top billing to Ron Howard!

The regulars have been with their roles for five years and I couldn't imagine anyone else with those parts. They are also better actors than they've been given credit for.

Those Nicastro covers were originally done for Japanese releases, and then they were, if I remember correctly, licensed to a Chinese label who loved her.

In the meantime, here are some posts I composed while on the train back from NYC....

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!  Good Evening!

-Just covering my bases, and after a couple of whirlwind days, I'm surprised that I know what time of day it is after being cooped up inside a theatre for hours on end.

Oh, that's what the sun looks like?!?!?

My time up New York Stage & Film was nothing short of amazing.  And special.  I truly was not expecting to have such a fun, creative and productive experience.

I caught up with some old friends, and made some new ones.

And I even got to sit next to Estelle Parsons at last night's show.  -Oh, and it turned out that Reg. E. Cathy was one of my floormates in my dorm.

I could wax poetic and rhapsodic about the past couple of days, but...  There was just so much that was "right" about the whole situation, that there's no possible way I could put everything down in print.  The timing, the people, the atmosphere - even the weather seemed to be in my favor.

The past two days were packed with rehearsals, rewrites, more rehearsals and more rewrites.  But that's what a workshop is supposed to be.  Yes, there were some "high tension" moments in all departments, but we all banded together, and the evening performances really came off well.  I just wish I could have stayed the rest of the weekend, but I really did need to head back home for a few days.... Since I'll "officially" be in NYC as of next Friday!

:D

I didn't end up staying in New York City today.  After hanging out in Grand Central Station a while - I grabbed some lunch, as well as two pies from The Little Pie Shop to take back to my parents - I headed over to Penn Station just in time to catch the 12:55 back to DC.

I may or may not drive back down to Richmond tonight.  I'm actually starting to feel the 'effects' of the past week, and I think I may just stay in Fairfax tonight and take it easy, then head down in the morning.  I have stuff to take care of in my storage unit, and then banking and mail first thing Monday morning.

I actually ended up booking some work for next Tuesday and Wednesday.  I thought it was in NYC, but after a recent phone call, it looks like the work will be in DC next week - and then some more work the following week in NYC.  -Playing auditions. Apparently, the casting breakdown went out with the dates switched for the cities.  In any case, I know I'm working a couple of time over the next few weeks.

:)

Mark Linn-Baker is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet.  For some reason, having watched him on PERFECT STRANGERS, I had this impression in the back of my mind that he might be very egotistical.  I am very happy to say that he proved me totally wrong.

Oy, oy, oy what a few days I've had.  We are deep in our planning (rather late for us) for our coming cross-country trek to Yellowstone with the boys.  Like an idiot, I decided to take back roads there to cut off some miles, only to find out hotels are few and far between up in those Nazi-infested climes of central Idaho.  :)

Then this morning our neighbors dropped by to ask Gabe if he wanted to go for a "little walk" with their boy and their new dog.  I said I'd come along.  SEVEN + miles later (I kid you not) we dragged ourselves home.  This was a major hike up and down hills (as those who have been to my very own home environment can attest, we live in the "San Francisco" section of Portland).  Plus BeeGee got excited at the prospect of a stream and pulled me down a hill where of course I fell very hard.

Incipient mortality department:  we're going to loop down through SLC on our way back from Yellowstone, and I wanted to drop by my parents' old house to show it to my kids.  My sister had said the new owners had told her that we were always welcome to come.  The hangup:  my sister has lost their name and phone number and can't remember it.  So I spent all last night doing "Infospace" searches for my old street, only to find that there is literally no one on that street left from even 8 years ago when my mom was still alive.  So I called the realtor this morning who handled the sale to see if she would go up there and get a message to the new owners.  We shall see.

But I think I have managed to answer the trivia question which, convoluted though it may be, is eminently solvable.  ;)

Question for the Big Brother fans.

To win the million the "teams" have to be the last 2 standing and not have anyone uncover their secret.

This last part confuses me because it seems that some people in the house are starting to suspect that others might be pairs.  So if a pair is the final two, then how is it determined if they win the million?

I'm back (and have been for a couple of hours) but have now caught up.  I just finished vacuuming my living room/dining room/hallway.  I have to admit that I rarely do it ::), but when I do vacuum, I'm quite anal retentive about it and thoroughly vacuum everything.  I even vacuumed the love seat (I don't have a full-sized couch) that my housemate's cat has been living on (my housemate has never vacuumed the loveseat :P).  Anyway, it took me more than an hour and I had to empty the bagless vacuum four, yes FOUR times!  It's that powerful a vacuum.  It's a Eureka!

Now that I'm done in my house, I have to go next door to my sister's and help her put up more towel bars (I did a few last night) and help her get the brand new vacuum that she just bought out of her car.  And we may switch some light fixtures.  There is one light fixture in my house (her former house) that she wants back, so I'll take the fixture that she has.  I hope it's not too difficult...and I don't want to electrocute myself.  So, I'll be very careful.

I had never seen an episode of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA; I had no idea Edward James Olmos is in this new incarnation of it. I found it rather inert.

I realize there was an entire season of episodes that I didn't see, and NBC attempted to do a patch on that in the first five minutes with a pretty good synopsis of what the key scenario of the series is.

Still, I didn't find it intriguing enough to continue into the the first season finale (two hours), and since I didn't plan to start watching the show when it picks back up on the Sci-Fi Channel this week, I flipped channels.

I read that the Fred Karlin cd was a release of an older album. But I didn't go looking for it.

I found the Fred Karlin album,

A very interesting cover.  Why the name change?

I've been in rehearsal all day and cannot POSSIBLY put together a coherent list of my favorite SS songs today.  So I'll do it tomorrow instead.  Tomorrow is tech from hell day :)

A very busy day today, beginning about 6 am, shoveling dirt. The evening was busy, as I received the info for tommorrow from the music director at noon. And we have a mind-numbing hours-long bored meeting tomorrow afternoon.

Jazz Goes to Hollywood was the original title and that was the original cover for the CD.  When it tanked, and when we did volume two, we changed the name to Co

Cool and Classic, which I absolutely abhorred.  It didn't sell any better under that inane title.  I like the "Variety" cover  -  read the articles - I wrote them all.

BUTT - the Japanese cover for the Karlin is completely different than either of those.

Here's my list of Sondheim songs. I have not seen all his work:
Opening to Into the Woods
Everybody Ought to Have a Maid
A Weekend in the Country
A Little Priest
Getting Married Today
The Miller’s Son
Now/Soon/Later (or whatever it is called)
Not While I’m Around
Comedy Tonight

Ben and Elmore must be passed out. We had some margueritas, many different flavors. Us three and Ol' TPunk. Lots o' laughs. And lots o' laffs too. Tom Cruise's ears must be burning. And some decent Mexican food at La Cocina, though they had some trouble getting Elmore's order right. The catch was they first thought it was my order they got wrong and took away my food only to say it was fine and that it was Elmore's that was amiss. Only took a minute to get the situation under control. The Gal was not super-happy with her meal I have since found out. We went to the Cream Puff shop afterwards but it had closed.

And that's the story of tonight's wee-mini HHW Gathering (East Coast Style).

Good Evening!

I ended up picking up Andy, and we headed out for sushi - which was good - and a movie, "Madagascar", which was good too.  All those references to older movies and TV shows - including "The Twilight Zone" - were very funny, but I could tell they were going over almost everyone else's head in the theatre, since no one else was laughing when I was.  Ah, well...

;)

One interesting thing about "Madagascar" - There were no "Coming Attractions" shown before the movie.

???

I guess there aren't any real family-friendly features due out this Fall and Winter, at least in the same vein as "Madagascar".  Or maybe since the showing started at 9:25, they wanted to make sure to get the kiddies home at a decent hour.

But, again, we both enjoyed the movie.

DR George - You're welcome.  My pleasure.

OH!

And she told me that Moxie will most definitely be going into the studio - at least once they find a suitable replacement for Cheryl.

DR JMK - "Art Isn't Easy"?  or the bridge from "Another Hundred People"?  Or..??

*At first I thought you were talking pitches...."Hmmm..What Sondheim song begins with an arpeggiated major chord over and over again? Then, I realized you were talking about fingerings.  -At least I hope it's fingerings.

My fingering nightmare has always been "Franklin Shepherd, Inc." from Merrily.

However, I do have to say that the piano/vocal score for Passion definitely requires some practice.

Matt H, we watched the first few episodes of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and stopped.  I really like Mary McDonnell in the show. Unfortunately Starbuck's character & the scripts didn't do it for us.

Obviously, my standards are lower. ;) I watch it and I've been enjoying it.  No, it's not the greatest thing on TV, but it's something to watch on Fridays, especially now since "Law and Order:  Trial By Jury" has been cancelled.

Did Laurel happen to say why Cheryl didn't want to do it any more?

...And it looks like the next two weeks will be quite filled employment-wise.

:)

And I'll also be earning more Amtrak points in the process too.  After checking the e-mails I received tonight, it looks like I'm playing auditions here in DC this week, Tuesday-Thursday.  Then I'm heading to NYC on Friday.  Then back down to DC Sunday night to play more auditions down here Monday.  Then back up to NYC to play auditions up there Tuesday-Friday.

I guess the monitors at the Equity building will finally get to know me by face.

:)

I didn't ask.  But from her tone, it didn't seem like anything scandalous.  Just something very matter of fact.

What Can You Lose
