Well, if you've read the notes (and you have, of course) you know all about what the title means and all about our topic of discussion, so go to it, you dear dear peoples.  All that is left for me to say is

DVD (From last night) "Stritch At Liberty"
CDs: 1.Rodgers & Hammerstein "Overtures" (Hollywood Bowl Orchestra) What a delight to hear the overtures from the lesser known shows too.
2. "After The Ball" Joan Morris
3. "Cry For Us All" OBC - This score is terrific.

508 POSTS YESTERDAY!!!  And I hay-elped!  ;D

Well, the cheesecake is in the oven and has about 10 minutes left.  It took me 30 minutes to try and QUIETLY do the dishes that I used.  I still have a lot of other dishes to do but they don't have raw egg on them.

Anyway, with all this talk about Ruthie Henshall (Thursday), I'm bringing to work her CD called "Pilgrim."  It's not CD of theater songs, but it's got pop songs and even a Madonna song on it (in a very different version from what Madonna does).  The song "After the Rain" is my favorite song from the CD.

In my DVD player:  ALW's By Jeeves (region 2).  I got it earlier this week and have watched bits of it, especially the bonus material, but I haven't watched the whole show proper all the way through.  I won't be able to tonight (Friday) because I'm ushering for a concert by George Winston.  :D  It should be a very good concert.

On my record player, Sarah Brightman's live (TV broadcast) recording of Song and Dance (again).  I had already recorded it to my computer to make a CD of it, but at the points where I broke up each of the sides of the record into individual tracks, there's a little click that is annoying as hell.  I hate that.  I have to fix them manually and sometimes it just doesn't work.  Some of my fixes haven't worked at all.  So, I'm starting over.

After Song and Dance will be my brand newly received eBay purchase of the original cast album of Schmidt & Jones' Philemon.  I've heard good things about this, but I've never heard it...not any songs from it at all.  I'm excited.  The album looks like it was never even played!

I woke up today at 5:30 AM so that I can be at school to meet with my presentation partner before the class.

I didn't know there was a 5:30 IN THE MORNING!!! [Yawn]

More later.  Or not... I might collaps from exhaustion.

So many notes from last night.  I stayed late and saw some wonderful photos from TCB as Horace Vandergelder!  ;D

Some baby pictures!  ;D

A great review of Taboo from DR Craig!  Thanks, Craig - probably the first review available was right here on HHW!

And even MORE notes this morning!  Everyone was lively and fun!  Thanks for the late nght!

Whew!  I am going to collaps just like DR Emily!

In my CD player:  Gypsy  and I agree with all the positive things that were written about this movie...and it's great to have the CD at last!  Rosalind Russell was a terrific actress, stunningly beautiful, and a good choice to play Rose - because she could act it.  I sat in the theatre when I was 11 years old and was astounded that she said "butts" and cried when Natalie "sang" Little Lamb.

Also in the CD - a disk recommended by DR Martin Mull....I mean TD - Andre Previn/Doris Day.  It is a nice warm jazzy sound with Day and the Previn trio doing their best which is good indeed!

In the DVD - Finding Nemo and I can add nothing to the praise it has already received here.  I can only say hurray for NO dumb songs!

In the VCR - Youngblood Hawke with Mr James Franciscus and Ms Suzanne Pleshette.

On the phonograph:  Annette's Pajama Party!

Friday at last!!!!

Oh, my. I expected a lot of posts but not over 500!

I'm sorry Craig about not mentioning your Taboo review. I even read it. I think it slipped my mind because I was thinking of other things during my early evening posting frenzies. I'm the one who posted all the links to outside reviews so bitch-slap away.

Not much music or video or DVD in this boy's weekend. Other than seeing the cabaret show I mentioned yesterday (way early on page 7 or something like that), I'll spend the weekend working. I might put something in the player at home but  I don't know what I'll listen to yet.

It's too early to have anything anywhere yet.   And I mean it!  Including it being too early to have me here typing this post.  But once I have something somewhere, I'll let you know.

Craig's review of Taboo is on yesterday's notes, Post number 286 on page 10. He ended by saying More later (I'm at work) so maybe I thought he would come back and add to the review.

TCB: Nope, I'm not looking to rejoin the dating pool. I'm very happy w/my Anthony. Even if I was single, the thought of joining the dating pool in this day and age is scary!

Ron said yesterday "I cannot speak for Canada, but in the United States, an ascot is an affectation!!"

Ah... I'll never forget the day a professor at Mcgill wore an ascot. It was all over the campus press for the next few weeks as students tried to get all professors to wear ascots.

JK DRs... I hardly ever resort to physical violence on my friends... :)

I certainly do NOT remember any prof. wearing an ascot. Although I'm sure that if one did, Andrea would be the first to notice.

Title: Re:VERY INFORMATIVE NOTES IN A LIMITED KIND OF WAY
Post by: Ben on November 14, 2003, 06:14:40 AM
DR Arnold (father to the esteemed Craig), Cry for Us All is a musical version of William Alfred's Hogan's Goat (with a score by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Alfred and Phyllis Robinson). It's about political maneuvering among Irish-Americans in Brooklyn in the late 19th century. It was not a success. It had 18 previews and 8 performances in 1970. Robert Weede was in it and nominated for Best Actor in a Musical (he lost to Cleavon Little in Purlie) I don't think it's been transferred to CD. I think there was a cast recording. This was in 1970, back when they made lots of cast recordings, even if a show was not successful. You could find them in record bins and they were usually marked down so you could get them cheap. Oh, the good old days.

According to this site, Cry for Us All is not on CD

If you click on the Cry for Us All link you do get taken to The Musical Cast Album Database which has an image of the Cast Album and some information about the cast.

Why is it that even though I click the "Always Stay Logged On" box I still have to log in once in a while?
It's happened only once at home, but it happens every couple of days at work.

CRY FOR US ALL was one of the only two OBC recordings on a label called Project 3.  The other, MINNIE'S BOYS, was issued on CD, but CFUA was not.  It stars the wonderful Helen Gallagher and that most happy fella Robert Weede.

CD - Florence Foster Jenkins sings bonus tracks from GYPSY.  (The rest of the CD features mostly Lisa Kirk).
(BK - are the bonus tracks on the bootleg?)

DVD - The "virtual aquarium" on the FINDING NEMO DVD (I'll watch the movie when I have time).  One of the cats has been sitting right next to the television when I put this on.

VHS - Nothing

Casettes - I just finished a set of classic radio comedy shows.  9 of the 10 were funnier than most television comedy shows today (including one with yesterday's topic Fanny Brice as "Baby Snooks"), but Milton Berle just wasn't funny on radio.

LP - I keep listening to "Man With a Load of Mischief".  What a gem of a show and now that I've seen it the LP is only better because I can place the songs within the context of the show.

Thank you, DR for the opening night thoughts.  The show is fabulous and is sure to send the audience humming as they leave the theatre. (well, the church in this case)

CD Player near bed - Segur Rose
CD Player in car - nothing exciting
CD Player in living room  - Olivia Newton-John

Nothing in the video/DVD player.

Have a nice day!  (oh, a cut JH reference - cut from "La Cage" and also cut from our version of "Jerry's Girls") Tra-la  :)

I just checked the weather report...

It is currently -5 degrees celcius (23 F) which isn't that cold.  But at the same time we have wind gusts up to 63 km an hour (39 miles/hr) which makes the wind chill a very very cold -23 degrees celcius (-7 F)!!!

No wonder I thought I was going to freeze before I made it into school this morning! :)

So much so that whilst I was walking down the stairs (having just put on my tux for my senior prom) I overheard him flirting/joking with my date that if I didn't come down soon that he would take her to the prom.

Oh yes. Now you see where I get it from....

JRand53, I do so look forward to the Allison picture of the day, each day! And laughed out loud at your title for today's pic! LOL!

Emily, I can not imagine anyone booing you! You are one of the sweetest on the board!

DVD: A double feature of Italian Kommissar X action films from the 1960s starring Tony Kendall and Brad Harris...SO DARLING, SO DEADLY and DEATH TRIP. Also finished up the last of the YOU BET YOUR LIFE episodes.

VIDEO: Taped an episode of MAVERICK last night with guest star William Reynolds.

CD: THE BEST OF CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD (a 1960s group) and a double cd of Lynn Anderson.

The bonus tracks on the Gypsy boot are the same, but with a couple of additions which are meaningless - the same take of Together with a bit of studio chatter before it, and something they call "Intermission" music which is just a different take of the Overture.

Good morning!

WOW!  What a huge number of posts last night...I just spent the last half hour catching up...I loved seeing all the pictures of DRs in various incarnations!

CD--Nine RCR, various showtunes dealing with break-ups...Miss Emily will be glad to know that I appreciate L5Y on such a higher level now, hehe!

Cassette--background tracks in preparation for my JMU audition next week

DVD--Whale Rider...after Macbeth last night, I spent the night at my friend's and we rented it.  Awesome movie...gorgeously shot too.

Ben--thanks for asking about how Macbeth went!  Actually, it went VERY well!  Very few cues and lines were missed, although the assassins were a tad late coming on for my scene.  I ended up saying my last line twice as a result.  "Why then, alas, do I put up this womanly defense to say I have done no harm?  I HAVE DONE NO HARM!"  But the scene did go well, and the audience seemed to enjoy the play a great deal...hopefully we will be able to repeat the feat tonight.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE GOOD VIBES!!! They helped!  Ah, the power of HHW.

Swishy--congrats on getting a 1200 SAT score!  That is not a bad score at all, especially if you're not that strong in math.  And if you do decide to take it again, I have full faith in you that you'll do even better!

TCB--Great pics from last night.  I have to say though...I was in the room backstage from which the actors enter the wings of the stage.  There's a computer back there, and when I read your comment about not cheering too much when Macbeth is beheaded, shortly before curtain, I laughed so hard that they made me turn off the computer!  ;D

Craig--*Flirting none too subtly*  ::) I enjoyed your Taboo review!

OH, and of course also on DVD today will be my weekly Bollywood movie. This week is SAWAN BHADON which is about some 1960s go-go dancers with big beehive hairdos and too much eye make-up. Some very fun songs and I am sure it will be 3 hours of pure joy for me!

I was awakened this morning at 5:30 a.m. by a VERY BAD CAT.   >:(    And now I'm feeling quite gumpy!

re: Getting booed, or as I like to think of it, DK'd (de-karmalized).  While I think it is always a good idea to believe that someone made a mistake and booed when they mean to applaud, the likelihood of someone being that careless, time and again, is rather odds-defeating.

No, I think we have to accept the idea that we are going to win some and we're going to lose some.  We cannot please everybody all the time.  We cannot please some bodies at any time.  But we can all try to get along, even if "booing" anonymously is the way we express our displeasure with someone we wish would go away/ take a long walk on a short pier/ amscray/ rest his or her fingers a few hours or days/etc.

Anonymity is a powerful tool no matter who uses it.

There are some good vibes for DR Matt for his show tonight.  As my friend Bryan says:  Kisses on your opening!   :-X

Glad you liked my picture title MBarnum.  Hey!  I love my Bollywood - but I sure do hate it that the songs are NOT  subtitled!  What is Ted Lyons singing with his Cubs in GUMNAAM?

BK--I am here looking at my bootleg of Gypsy and am wondering what you meant about the inlay--my inlay is typo free.  Maybe he went back and fixed them.  Are you implying the bootlegger is who I think you're implying?  I guess from your review that I don't need to bother getting the official release.

In the DVD:  Singing Detective, the miniseries.
In the VCR:  last Wednesday's Law & Order, which we're half way through
On the phonograph:  a great 1969 promo disc from Ford, featuring the smash (their words) vocal group The Going Thing, featuring Janis Hansen who had just "left" Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.  Side 2 has a top secret private message to dealers from Ford's Chairman (haven't listened to it yet, but assume he disputes what Ford stands for).
In the CD player:  Nik Kershaw--am currently doing choral arrangements of two of his quirky little pop masterpieces from the 80s--does anyone remember the 80s?

Have to say when I went to bed last night, we were trying to get to 400 posts, and when I logged on this morning, it had exceeeded 500! Wow!

Not only that but there were 45 posts already on today's forum! There is something in the air, and it's been great fun whatever it is. So glad to be here.

Media alert:

CD - Hoping GYPSY comes today, but SATINS AND SPURS is still there from last week. Can't seem to get past cut 5.

VHS - last night's WILL & GRACE and SCRUBS

DVD - THE HARVEY GIRLS to be followed by THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC. And probably others since there is NOTHING whatsoever of interest on TV tonight.

I finished COLORED LIGHTS last night and will be continuing THE SECRET LIFE OF HUMPHREY BOGART now.

JMK, I remember the 80s all too well...and I even have a record album of Nik Kershaw!!!

JRand53, I have also wondered why the vintage Bollywood movies never seem to have the songs subtitled, but the newer ones do.  The "picturizations" are such an integral part of those movies. By the way, I bought a few (ok several) Bollywood song DVDs and there were two from PAKEEZAH. What a beautiful looking film. I can't wait to see it!

Just read the VARIETY review of TABOO. It wasn't an out-and-out pan, but it was decidedly negative.

DR Ron, I have to be honest; I haven't given MISS MATCH even a slight look-see. Just didn't seem like my kind of show from the pre-season descriptions of it. Yet, most critics have found it charming, and I noticed that she helps to match up a lesbian with a partner in next week's episode.

THE SECRET LIFE OF HUMPHREY BOGART details his early life up to 1931 acting in plays in NYC, the people (gay and straight) he came into contact with, and the contacts he made that gave him a chance to come to Hollywood. Not exceptionally well written, but interesting nevertheless.

Was it you, DR Ben, who was making the turtle cheesecake last night. Reading those descriptions written last night this morning before I had anything to eat just made my stomach feel like a bottomless pit. I'm sure they are a LOT of trouble to make, but you don't care once it's done because it's sheer ecstacy in the eating. Please let us know how it turned out.

I don't understand what the problem was with the vanilla extract.  If you find you're out, just run downstairs and get some more.

So windy last night!  If the wind were a car (heaven forbid!), it could be arrested for speeding.

The only CD in the changer is one I'm quite enjoying, a demo for a new musical called The Vaudevillian; the music's completely in period.

Around my house, we abbreviate Taboo by omitting the first vowel.  As in, "If you come to Broadway t' boo, see T'boo."

In the VCR is The West Wing, which I watch more often than regular news.  Which is why I've trouble separating fiction from reality.  I know a senator switched parties, but is the Chief Justice ailing?  And would the president call him "Chief"?

I hate to sound a note of discord (G#), but, for me, what matters is the quality of the posts, not the quantity.  I found the recent push to set individual and group records less-than-the-best thing I could read on the internet.  But there are still nuggets of gold to be found amidst all the posts-for-the-sake-of-posting and I read them all.

Everytime anyone posts that, I think they are talking about Dr. Joy instead of our very own Joy.

Thank you all for your nice comments about the Dolly pictures.  I try not to be too self-indulgent, but I guess last night I was in a mood.  Besides, I do think I looked good in that red dress.

YOU WILL BE SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED!

Raymond Zilberberg, who "happens" to be vice-president of Montreal Hillel and who "happens" to have an interest in directing "happens" to have convinced Hillel to give an outrageous amount of money each year (TOMMY last winter went to $28000) to stage a musical that his so-called production company just "happens" to want to put on.

The final result is always a really really really bad production - complete with off key male choruses, bad sound and the worst acting this side of Urban Cowboy.

I helped the lighting designer on their last project and was completely and utterly disgusted.

It's a guy with too much power and money putting on a show that most CAMP PRODUCTIONS would best in quality.

Will it really be that bad? I also love Tommy and really wanted to see that last year.  Emily I suppose you are too young. But did you see Evita when it was performed by the Lyric theatre (some time in the last 10 years). It was incredible.

I cannot figure out why they let him get the immunity. Even if they didn't want him to realize he was their target, they could have made certain that he still didn't win immunity.

DR Emily if you like Rupert you will be glad to know that it is rumored that he is in the upcoming All-Star edition.

Personally I loved him at the beginning, and now I really don't like him at all. He is a bully.  When he said last night, "if someone betrays me I will kill them" I just wanted to scream.  The people there are afraid of him.  And that should be unacceptable.  I think it's disgusting how he's been acting.  Btw, rumor has it he gets his light extinguished soon. I don't know if there is any truth to it. But I sort of hope so.  And I hope he doesn't see it coming :)

I know most french kids named Emily use the spelling Emilie.  But I'm sure there are plenty of English speaking babies in Montreal with the same spelling as you.  I actually cannot get used to the IE spelling. Really don't like it.

Reality Show ALERT:  William E. Lurie, the next post is entirely about "Survivor":

Jennifer:  As is always the case, we see only bits and pieces of what's going on, and usually they're out of context.  Rupert's comment was about "Ryan" -- Ryan was trying to form a voting bloc of five to oust Rupert and the rest of his tribe.  At the time, there were 5 from one tribe and 4 from the other; Ryan, vastly unpopular among his own tribe, wanted to form an alliance/bloc with the smaller tribe and get rid of everyone in his old tribe (which, by the way, was hands-down the very best tribe of all the Survivor shows -- they exude teamwork, they play hard, they work hard and they win big).

Rupert and whoever he was talking to were discussing Ryan, and Rupert said, off the cuff, "I told him that if he ever betrayed me I'd kill him."  Well, Rupert isn't going to kill, or even hurt, anyone.  It's just talk.  And note that everyone voted for Ryan -- the other tribe didn't trust him anymore than his own tribe.  His offer was pretty good, too....it was a clear way of getting rid of the strong players -- the water bearers, the food providers.  At the end, of course, would be a few very tired, skinny, average schmoes limping about in exhaustion, unable to win any competition except by default.

CBS, on the other hand, wants nothing more than to maintain interest in the show.  When they cut it, they do their best to make you think things are going to go a different way than they have been going (and thus far, they haven't gone any way other than the way they went from the beginning -- the strong survive).

I cannot fathom what is coming next week -- Lil, rightly saying "I'm such a bitch" (we all have vindictiveness at our disposal, but we shouldn't be wearing Scouting uniforms when we display these traits), may be on her way out.

There's never been a "rumor" about "Survivor" that was true or founded in anything real....yet.  It's always just Internet gossip founded on nothing but titillation.

I think what we saw in the competition was a true indication of the worth/esteem in which Rupert is held by the combined tribe.  You may dislike him, but they obviously don't.

Except for evil John...the most worthless of all of them.  His chit is past due.

Ryan was a slacker.  He constantly complained and did little to help anyone.  It's not about looks on Survivor...it's about performance.

I'm guessing he was considered a limp noodle! :)

Krista's okay...she has the proper take on things.  But now the merged tribe has equal votes -- 4 from each of the original two tribes.

In the CD:  Dick Powell, ON THE AVENUE.  Just finished watching DAMES on TCM with breakfast.

Carry-over from last night.  When I saw the Ruthie Henshall SHE LOVES ME in London at the Savoy in July of '94,  the cast was doing American accents.  My wife and I both commented on it, because a couple of them were a bit dicey...and we both can recognize a British and an American accent (even a dicey American one done by a Brit).  The show was staged by the same folk who did the Roundabout production (though this cast was totally new and British), so maybe it was a directorial carry-over from there that was later gotten rid of.  Beats me.  It makes no sense.

John Gordon Sinclair is actually Scottish, having made a hit in a movie when he was a teenager called Gregory's Girl.  He and Ruthie Henshall were an item during the run of SHE LOVES ME and for awhile after, but they broke up and, I believe, never got back together.  Nor are they married, to the best of my knowledge.

MORE SURVIVOR TALK.

DR Ron: I actually disagree with much of what you said.  I think the rumors at canoe are very well researched. And it would not surprise me at all if many of them come true.

I do realize that they edit the show a certain way.  But I don't necessarily think that everyone is so fond of Rupert.  Even Krista and Saundra were talking about getting rid of him.  I actually thought that was horrible of them, since he would NEVER do that to them.

I don't think Ryan was a slacker. In fact when Rupert went over to the other tribe, Ryan was the one he got along with best. They fished and worked together.

You say that Rupert wasn't going to hurt anyone. I disagree. He was so mad that time when John voted against him. He went ballistic. I don't think it's appropriate to threaten people. That guy gets so mad when anyone goes against him.

I think that Burton and John and Lil will get rid of Rupert (maybe even next week). The alliance of Burton and Lil is strong. And I think it could go very far.  They know they need to get rid of Rupert and soon. The thing I don't get is why they let him get immunity.  I think it is because 1) they didn't want to give Rupert the heads up as to what was happening and 2) they want to get rid of any outsiders first.

Rupert said why he got rid of Ryan. They felt that after Andrew he was the leader. He was a threat because he was trying to get Burton and Lill and John to vote with him and T and Darrah. Then they could have picked off Rupert's tribe one by one.

Right now Burton is my favorite.  It is a bit weird that he sided with Rupert and let John and Lil vote off Ryan. But I think they figured that if they voted off Krista, that would give Rupert too much notice, to realize that he was next.

I think Lil is saying that because she is forced to lie to Rupert. He thinks she is with him, and she will betray him.

The funny thing is one of the rumors involves there being a huge lie being told on the show.  Some say it may have to do with Lil.

DR AMB--

I am listening to the same recording you mention, conducted by Sir Georg Solti and featuring Miss Nilsson and Mr. Wolfgang Windgassen.  I recently picked up this version of the complete Ring on CD, the first time I have duplicated on CD anything that I already own on vinyl.

I also have, on vinyl, complete sets conducted by Herbert von Karajan (with Helga Dernesch) and Wilhelm Furtwaengler (with Kirsten Flagstad.)  My library also includes, on vinyl, another complete Walkure (again with Miss Nilsson, but on this recording with Mr. Jon Vickers--incredible!--led by Erich Leinsdorf), plus a gazillion records with excerpts from the various Ring operas sung by the usual suspects from the mid-20th century.

I was lucky to see the Ring once at the Met, with Miss Birgit Nilsson.  It was an amazing experience.

Jennifer:  "Big Brother" was happening in real time, and Canoe was monitoring it 24-7.  They had insights to share based on first-hand observation.  But they didn't know in advance what was going to happen any more than you or I did.  We experienced it together.

For "Survivor," they seem to be thriving on rumor and innuendo.  The show is in the can, so to speak.  Cast members deliberately say things to throw everyone off the truth because they are well-compensated by CBS NOT to let slip anything that might give away what really happened.

No matter how convincing the Canoe guy seems to be, no "Survivor" show, thus far, has been accurately predicted based on anything that was said on the internet, gleaned from comments by any of the cast members.  He wasn't even sure who would leave last night, although his "guess" was right.

I may be very wrong in my faith that this is still the case for this "Survivor" show.  There's no point in watching if one puts faith in "leaked" information.  Not for me, anyway.

I haven't seen any pictures of Annette in several years.

Speaking of absent stars, has anyone heard anything about Connie Francis lately?  I always loved her, and I had such high hopes for her comeback.

Also, what about Betty Hutton?  She was so wonderful and so well received when she did Miss Hanniganin in Annie that I hoped it was going to be the start of a new career for her.  Anyone?

Did you see the interview that Robert Osborne did with Betty Hutton on TCM three years ago? ;D

Recent pictures of Annette are not pretty, sad to say.  She celebrated her 61st Birthday last month.  :'(

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]MORE SURVIVOR TALK[/move]

DR Ron wrote:

I agree, following their Big Brother coverage was better and much different.  I don't know if they have done Survivor coverage like this before.  But if you check their records for this season, their information has been VERY accurate thusfar.  They knew about the outcasts coming back.  And they seem to have insights about the show that are quite interesting.

I don't think he knows exactly who is going each night. Without having seen the show, he can't know everything. But he seems to have clues about who will stay and who will be gone soon.

The only reason I am reading it is because of how great his Big Brother coverage was. I really like the way this guy works.

Btw, what did you think about his ideas about what he feels the "big lie" is?  Should be interesting. I hope there really is a lie.

Bill, I know that she was working as a housekeeper for for two parish priests, even before she came back and did Annie.  Apparently those two or three weeks on Broadway were enough to remind her about the part of show buisness that she didn't like.  I guess as long as she is happy, that is all that counts.

Bake them until they look done to your taste.  Are you after a soft or crunchy skin?  I personally don't care for potatoes that have been cooked in the microwave oven.  I prefer a crunchier skin.

Is he the Party Doll guy?

Oh, have to concur re: Connie Francis.  On a satellite service about eight years ago, there was a concert from some casino in New Jersey.  Connie gave it her best, but there's not much left.  Memories are better.  She had an operation on her sinuses or some such, and it really took her voice away (shades of Julie Andrews).  And she did most of the show sitting on a stool, the few times she moved around she got out of breath very quickly....and the poor girl sang a LOT of fast songs!

Anyway, Dick Clark was there and it was great to see that reunion, but Connie's talent is no longer what it was....we can rest easy though knowing that her father George Franconero negotiated some good tough contracts, and she is really too rich to worry about it.

And we do have her movies.  DR of younger age...a major film studio MGM - built at least four lightweight musical movies around Connie Francis and her talent....  My favorite is "Looking for Love."

MGM took GIRL CRAZY and refashioned it around Connie Francis and the luscious Harve Presnell. I knew it was going to be a modernized GIRL CRAZY, so imagine my surprise when a few minutes into the movie Connie bellowed out "Mail Call." Not a Gershwin classic, but a good song for her voice.

It's happened only once at home, but it happens every couple of days at work.

WEL (unless someone else has commented on your post), here at my work, I have to log in EVERY day.  It's because the computer people where I work have security measures set up that prevent certain things from being saved...cookies and passwords, included.  I don't know exactly how it works, but that would be my guess.  You may not have a choice in the matter.  I just keep signing in each day, knowing that it's to protect the entire computer system from being hacked.

Hooooooooly Guacamole, things were hoppin' around here last night! Congratulations to one and all, hopefully that sort of thing will stick around (Actually, maybe not TOO hopefully...it was a TON of reading.)

I have indeed read the notes, but I don't have time to read all of the posts, because I have to be at work soon, and I don't want to risk not being able to post.

CD: "Mozart Makes You Smart"...I stole it from my little sister, I couldn't sleep last night. BUT, I got a 99 on my Algebra test today, so maybe it helped!

DVD: Bend It Like Beckham...I like this movie...it's not GREAT, and the storyline is getting kind of repetitive, but overall it's a lot of fun.

Tape: Tape player is busted and it eating my tapes. SO annoying.

We started choreography in show choir today! It's not GREAT, because my teacher is doing it, and she's not incredibly choreography-talented, but it's cute, and slowly coming together. We're doing a Jazz version of "Carol of the Bells", and it's SO MUCH FUN! I get to slide and scoop a lot, and the song sounds great.

The school play, Dracula, started this weekend. HOPEFULLY I'm not working tomorrow night, and I can go see it, because I wasn't able to last night. If I'm not working, I'm going to give DR Laura II a call and maybe we can go together. I MISS HER! I heard the show was awesome, really nicely put together, and I'm friends with all of the cast members. Should be buckets of fun :).

And that's about all I have to say for the moment...I'll post later when I get home.

I was so impressed with the Accordian player at Benjamin's "Bar Mitzvah" being able to play "Where The Boys Are" It would have only just have made radio air play. It did not chart nationally until January. I wonder if the guy is still working. Perhaps he had an amazing "ear". The Connie Francis topic led me here! The opening notes of the song always sound like "April Love" is about to start.

LOL Ron.  When I was 14 my older sister returned from college with a really neat trick she tried to teach me.  The first part of the trick was to eat all I wanted, which I was pleased to do.  Then she showed me how to loose all that food quickly, only to begin the eating process again.  To this day I am thankful for my lack of skill in that area-the loosing part.  Unfortunately I did continue the second and third round of eating with her.  I still remember how sick I was by the end of the day.

Cousin TCB - LOL!  I never noticed the resemblance before, I don't know what I was thinking.  You didn't scare me away, I refuse to stay in the office one minute past five on a Friday and had to go home!  Actually, my relatives are picky and stay in a hotel when they come because they think my apartment is too small.  I only have one couch and floor space for guests, but they all say I am a very good host.  I feed my guests nonstop.  :)

I am very fond of entertaining people who visit NYC, but I'd still rather have an H/K party in Hawaii!

Nobody here has to worry, because our site has the jiggiest people who are both bright AND respectful.  Other sites are not so lucky, hence we should be able to vote off certain types of posters.  I ate luncheon at the Cheesecake Factory - I had the fried shrimp scatter - way too many teeny fried shrimp, a whole mess o' fries and a little cup of clam chowder.  It was good but now I'm full and uncomfortable and I want to vomit on the ground.

ROTFLMAO --  I read it that you bought lunch at the Cheapskate Factory

Special people get to use "Tommy" or TP.

And here we hit an amusing cultural bump!

In the U.S. of A., "TP" is the popular abbreviation for papier de toilette (trying to put it delicately).

And "Tommy", of course, is a Hilfiger cologne/perfume brand.

Well, the movie cast is made of of REALLY talented people, and they certainly do well with their roles, but there's just something about the freshness of Carolyn Jones, John Astin, and Jackie Coogan's playing that makes me prefer them.

The first year that show was on, I thought it was the most hilariously weird and wacky thing I had ever seen, and I MUCH preferred it to THE MUNSTERS which debuted the same year.

Really?  Then what's the point?

Maybe I didn't explain it properly.  I still drizzled them with oil. And they still tasted like potato skins. But I didn't want to deep fry them.  Most potato skin recipes recommend cooking the potatoes first in the microwave, so that you don't have to bake them for an hour in the oven.

But if you put the scooped out skins in the oven, they get crispy very fast!

DR Jane wrote:

Bake them until they look done to your taste.  Are you after a soft or crunchy skin?  I personally don't care for potatoes that have been cooked in the microwave oven.  I prefer a crunchier skin.

I wanted a crunchy skin. They were pretty crunchy. I microwaved them just so they were cooked. Then I scooped and put them in the oven for about 30 minutes.

No, Matt, it was I, George, who made the cheesecake!  It wasn't too dificult except that I couldn't use my power tool (hand mixer) because I started making it after midnight.  But it was delicious!  Everyone who had a piece LOVED it.  Actually, I think that people were more impressed with the fact that I made it from scratch at all and that it wasn't just a "regular" cheesecake.

I don't understand what the problem was with the vanilla extract.  If you find you're out, just run downstairs and get some more.

Noel, I don't think that my downstairs neighbor would've been very happy to be woken up at midnight by someone asking to borrow a teaspoon of vanilla.  I used dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet, so I don't think that the vanilla was missed at all.  I certainly didn't think that anything was missing.   ;D

Good evening all! Sorry I didn’t at least post a quick “Good Morning” before heading off to work but from the moment my first toe moved from under the warm cover and encountered a much lower temperature than normal, I was in slow gear.

I’m having a major disagreement with the local weather man at the moment.  He insists it is “crisp” outside.  I beg to differ.   What the heck is crisp?  Lettuce is crisp.  Potato chips are crisp.  Celery is crisp.  The weather outside is COLD! Don’t give me no crisp crap.

Now that I got that off my chest, I feel somewhat better.  Still cold but better.

What a lovely week.  I could use more like this one.  2 paid days off, 2 paid days of a wonderful class and 1 day of work-paid, of course.  I highly recommend it.

BTW, I was told they had a very quiet week at work.  There might be a message there but I can’t quite put my finger on it.    ::)

"Queen for a Day" was a "sort of" prize show -- four (IIRC) ladies vied for a crown, cape and prizes.  They all had sob stories, each more pitiful and pathetic than the previous.

I'm thinking they were mostly legit.  At the end of the show, the host, Jack Bailey (who looked like Walt Disney a little bit) would hold his hand over each contestant's head and the studio audience would applaud.  The "applause meter" determined which lady won the audience's heart each day.

Many days, the lady with the hardest hard-luck story of all DID NOT WIN, and it used to break my tender young heart (I always wore my heart on my sleeve in those days).  I couldn't understand why the audiences would reject some of those pitiful stories.

The winner would usually get something designed to alleviate her hardships -- if she was forever toiling away in the kitchen cooking on a wood stove for lots of folks, she'd get a brand new electric stove; if she was washing clothes with a scrub board for a large family, including several younguns, she'd get a washing machine.  There would also be a day of primping at a Hollywood salon (called "spas" today), and maybe a gift certificate for shopping at an elegant dress show (or through a catalog like Michael C. Fina).

Ah, yes, those were the days.............

I was just a wee sprig when I watched "Queen for a Day," but my recollection is that at the time I thought what's the use of a washing machine if they didn't have electricity running to their hovel in the middle of the woods, or what's the use of a stove if there was no food to cook on it.  This was a long time ago, and that long stretch may have fogged my memory, but DR Ron is so correct in saying that these women had the saddest, most hard-on-their luck stories I ever heard.  I do remember enjoying when they were crowned and robed.  In retrospect, I now realize how pathetic that was.

I never could quite figure out the logic of some of the prizes on Queen for a Day (and, no, Jennifer, you don't want to be Queen for a day).

Here would be this poor woman in a housedress who would tell the studio audience how her husband was in an iron lung, and how she hadn't been able to work since the rock slide ruined their old truck, not to mention that their son had been thrown out of the priesthood (how is that possible?  he didn't drink?).  And what do they give her for prizes, but a year's supply of Ivory Soap and a silver tea service from Michael C. Fina?  What in the hell is that about?

A great many jokes about queens and tea services went swirling through my mind, but.......... let it go, Tom, just let it go.

Great minds think alike, Jay.

I had forgotten about the robe.   She would still have on the housedress, and they would put this velvet robe around her and try to get the crown to stay in her badly permed hair; and they would say that first they were going to whisk her off to lunch, by limo, to some fancy Beverly Hills restaurant.  And, of course, no one would look twice at the woman sitting and eating lunch by herself in this elegent establishment wearing an old housedress, the robe, and the crown.

Gosh, I hated that show.

And let us not get me started on how frustrated I am about that.  Oh yes - frustrated would be the word.  Me thinks there is a leeeeeeeeetle discussion that the boss and I are going to have to have sooner rather than later.

So.. if I had to vote anyone off right now it would be me.. so I can get some peace and rest and all that jazz...

Can you tell I am frustrated? Frustrated and frazzled.  They gave me the old frazzle dazzle and now I am frazzle dazzling them.

Ok.. I've amused myself long enough. I must get downstairs and play nice with the event staff...

Let me see if this link will work if I don't highlight it.

This is the place where I was trying to find a good recipe for potato skins.

http://www.allrecipes.com

This is the site where I found the chocolate turtle cheesecake recipe that I used (except that I had no vanilla).  If anyone is interested, here's the link:

http://cake.allrecipes.com/az/turtlecheesecake.asp

The other (minor) changes were that I used chocolate graham crackers instead of the vanilla wafers, 4 tbs. butter instead of the 6 and I had dark chocolate chocolate chips.  I found another recipe that was almost exactly the same except it said to use 2 tbs. butter for the crust and only two 8-ounce packages of cream cheese, which would make a thinner batter.  Both recipes said to use 2 eggs so the texture of the cakes will be different.  I personally like a thicker cheesecake.

DR George, how did the cheesecake turn out?

And did you have any trouble FedExing me a piece or ten of it.  :D
Giving the recipe is about as close as I can come to FedExing it to you...as much as I'd love to actually do it.  I really do enjoy baking (especially when it turns out so well), but I don't get (take) very many chances to do it.  If I only do it for myself, then I'd be twice the man I am...and not in a good way.  :-\

In OZ we had the same show (we'll buy anything) but it was retitled "Lady For A Day". We did not want to offend HRM QEII. The show was just as bad. The opposition commercial channel has "It Could Be You" which was much the same but marginally better - it rewarded housewifes who went beyond the "call of duty" and did so much for others in their family and community.

Suffering, I fear, is just the Royal way, Dear TfO.  Look at what's being said now about Bonnie Prince Charlie.  Imagine, caught in a compromising position with his valet.  And I thought Wilde said that no man is a hero to his valet.  Perhaps Elizabeth Regina II shall live as long as her mum, Charles predecease her, leaving that adorable fruit of Diana's loins to lead the UK.

Ah yes, Queen for a Day!  When it came on, I knew it was almost time for my brother to come home from school.

Oh, I cried and cried at the stories....and yes the horrible applause meter would decide which poor, pitiful creature would become Queen for a Day!

Two horrible stories I remember to this day, was the woman who came to the show from her son's funeral...he was killed in the fire when her house burned down.....and the woman who had just had a baby and her husband and two other children had been killed in an auto crash on the way to visit her and the new baby in the hospital!   :'(

Nice choice of picture DR Tom from Oz.

Oh, interesting, I really thought unless Charles became King, his children were not in direct line to the throne.  So then Andrew and Edward are more useless than ever.

Royal Succession:  It always runs through the eldest son.  If Charles had daughters instead of sons, the eldest of them would be the heir-designate to the throne.  Andrew and Princess Edward are footnotes in royal history books now.  If Anne had been born before Charles, he'd still have been heir to the throne over her.

As for the location of "Queen for a Day," I had it in my mind that it was broadcast from some location at Hollywood and Vine....but then again, I also gave thought to the Brown Derby...but that would have been crazy.

Where was it, BK?

Thanks to the NY Times I know that that excellent documentary "Avoir et Etre", -- To Be and To Have, to you! -- has finally reached the States.

I recommend it STRONGLY, if it plays near you!
Briefly said, it's about the French educational system seen in rural France.

That documentary has had a phenomenal success; so much so that the teacher in the film, now retired, is sueing the "director" for a slice of the pie!
Money spoils averything, ain't that right?

A brand new twenty...
Let's have plenty
Straight from the mint
But please don't make me squint

If we're to sit and sing of solid waste

As I take my seat, don't give me crisp crap
I prefer a softer stool.

This is what I've just found on THE BETTY HUTTON SHOW site:

"In 1993 Betty revealed she had Epstein-Barr syndrome, the disease which leaves one feeling tired and drained of energy, an ironic ailment for her. And as a devastating blow, in 1996, the reverend Father Peter McGuire died.

Betty Hutton had lived in Rhode Island 25 years and spent them working to help despairing church members with her experience and with the help of her friend Father McGuire by her side. After the death of the Reverend, Betty’s friend and songwriter Jay Livingston suggested she return to California. Betty moved back to the sunny state wanting to be close to her daughters again with aspirations of becoming a lecturer at Universities around Southern California. And in 2000, Betty did a fascinating intimate interview on Turner Classic Movies’ “Private Screenings with Robert Osborne”. This amazing one-hour interview is a goldmine of information and a treasure of love and appreciation.

In November 2000, Annie Get Your Gun, Berlin’s Musical wonder, was finally released on video after having been restricted from public viewing since 1978. According to modern sources, Irving Berlin, who retained the music rights, refused to allow the picture to be shown commercially. But now, Betty is shown in full digital color, singing splendidly "You can't get a man with a gun!" for all the new generations to enjoy.

As for Hutton, 80, she was last located in Palm Springs, California and gave a small interview in the July 2000 issue of TV Guide. Surprised at the attention surrounding her stupendous appearance on Turner Classic Movies, and of the applause given her by the crew on the “Private Screenings” set, Betty responded brightly:
“Oh my God, maybe they think I’m somebody else! God is so good to me, sweetheart, he really is.”

Bless her heart!

Well, it looks like another record breaking day. I haven't been on since 5pm and we're already at 10 pages.

The cabaret Reddy to Go, a "musical theatre tribute to Helen Reddy" was cute. The woman was great. Spot on as the English say. The man was weak. He isn't a strong enough singer to pull off his part. It needs a better directorial hand since at 1 hour it felt a little long.

Mr. Pulliam, sometime this weekend we will find out what happens at 500 posts. Maybe you get a new title and become a Global Moderator emeritus.

At least tomorrow when I wake up I can sit in front of my computer at home and read the posts not thinking "I should be working".

No, Queen for a Day was NOT done at the Pantages theater.  The Pantages was a thriving movie palace in those days.  While I can't swear it was always broadcast from the same place, for most of its years it came to you live from Frank Sennes' Moulin Rouge on Sunset Blvd. and Vine - which later became the Aquarius Theater.

Next trivia: Who plays the Press Rep (uncredited) in the final dressing room scene in Gypsy?  If you use the imdb you will be disqualified, so tell the truth.

I remember that some of the women would be crying so hard trying to tell their story that Jack basically had to tell it for them. That just killed me as a little kid watching. And then three of them ended up losing which just ADDED to their hard luck.

Seems almost sadistic now in retrospect.

my uncle Tom suggested that she and a friend go to Queen For A Day at the Pantages (pictured at left in LA's Diamond District). She and her friend went down to try and get into the show. You had to go across the street from the Pantages to actually get the tickets and then return to Pantages and stand in line. When they got to the ticket window, the girl told them that the show was 'sold out.' She also told them that sometimes the ushers kept extra tickets in case the audience chairs weren't completely filled. My mom and her friend flew across the street and asked the usher if he had any extra tickets. "Only two," he said. My mom took them and the other three people who had come looking for tickets, were left out on the street, so to speak! My mom told me the procedure that took place. Once you got in line, someone came around and gave you a card and you wrote down your 'wish'. Then they did sort of a impromptu interview with you

BTW I did not write this I took it from a website

Well, it was never the HOLLYWOOD Pantages, that much I can tell you.  The Queen for a Day sign was plastered on the Moulin Rouge for as long as I can remember - that was where it was taped live.  I don't misremember these things.  When I saw The Three Stooges in person there (as written about in Kritzerland) I remember the sign as if it were yesterday, that QFAD was filmed there.

Oz TV is auditioning would bes for the Australian version of "Queer Eye".  I assume they will only audition in Sydney. And then you want to howl with laughter, watch Betty Bruce and Faith Dane's timing in the "I don't do scenes" scene.  Faith Dane is unbelievably brilliant and Betty Bruce's timing on "Who're you?  Her mother?" is great.

When Natalie Wood lost the Oscar for SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, she was working on GYPSY at the time and specifically the strip sequence. Warner Bros. flooded newspapers with publicity pictures of Natalie in all her scantily clad beauty trying to build up her confidence after losing that award.

We all knew Natalie was a beauty, but when she steps out of that bathroom in that blue satin dress and we see her grown up for the first time, what a revelation!

Three cheers to Noel for all these delightful songs.  One day you must publish these as The Songs of HHW :)

Craig... poor vous.  Working late is never fun - especially when you aren't paid by the hour.  Just think of all the calories you're buring being frustrated and how well you will sleep tonight! ;)

I went to see Black Comedy tonight and was very much amused.  I think the play was just long enough to be funny and cute and interesting without overstaying its welcome.  All of the actors were good - although a few had problems with the accents.  The set, like all McGill Theatre Department productions was kick ass - very professional looking (remember I come from the black hole of amateur anglo theatre known as Montreal so any set piece that isn't culled from the director's mother's living room = fah-bu-lous).

Even Andrea liked it! (which is saying a lot because we have very different tastes normally...)

Jennifer: I think Andrea and I will be going to see Hillel's EVITA despite my earlier rant.  It shows at the end of February.  If you wanna meet up with us to form our own HHW-Get Together that would be fun.  In the meantime don't forget to check out the McGill Savoy Society's Pirates of Penzance.  They are ten times better than the Gilbert and Sullivan's performed by the Montreal West and Lakshore Operatic Societies... mainly because they use the resources of actual voice students from the music department :)

There also was a movie called Queen For a Day with Darren McGavin and Phyllis Avery in 1951. This must have been the first movie spin off of a TV series. Anyone can confirm or deny this?

Well I'm back from a long time at work. I'm really liking this job! The people there are really nice, and they hired a new cook who's about 24 and GORGEOUS! So I'm having fun. AND, our very own DR Laura II works a few stores away, and she stopped in for dessert tonight, so I got to see her! Last time we met up was at TMM on my birthday, so it was MUCH too long. And I am working tomorrow night too, so no Dracula :(. Luckily I know someone who has a bootleg, so I can watch it later.

Ron: Don't be gumpy about your kitty being bad! Walk in the sunshine! :) -To quote someone else I know-

Maya and Laura II- Thanks for the SAT comments. I'm happy with my scores, but I know I could have done better. I guess thats a good problem to have, though!

Jay and Jane: THANK YOU for your sweet comments about my Algebra grade! That seriously made my day. I yelled with glee when I saw the score and I think I might have scared him a bit, but I know he was proud of me for working so hard to get the grade. Things are looking up in the messy world of math.

Random Update on Something: My brother and his girlfriend may be breking up. Very, very soon. I am so happy I could dance! In fact, I will dance! This is news for celebration, I'm putting it on the calendar if it happens. No more witch!

Question: How were your days today?

Well, in the USA, AMERICAN IDOL invites previous winners and runners-up back on the show to make guest appearances, especially if they have a new CD to hawk, so they keep them in the public eye pretty well because they have a venue right at hand they can use.

I'm sure the 3rd edition of AMERICAN IDOL will be popular, but I just don't see how it can top the amazing down-to-the-wire competition between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard this past season here.

GREAT NEWS!!

The Off-Broadway revue Listen to My Heart: The Songs of David Friedman has rescinded the closing notice that was posted earlier this week.
According to producer Victoria Lang, the show -- which opened on Wednesday, October 23 -- needed to sell 600 tickets to stay open past this Sunday, and that figure was reached in one day. Lang told TheaterMania.com that the show will now employ new marketing and audience development teams, that it will rely less heavily on traditional advertising and focus more on grass-roots efforts to build an audience. Listen to My Heart's celebrity supporters include Kathie Lee Gifford (who wrote the lyrics to one of the songs in the show, "Only My Pillow Knows") and psychic John Edward. Lang says that Edward, who felt his mother speaking to him through one of Friedman's songs, will devote two upcoming episodes of his popular television show Crossing Over to the show, its cast, and its performing space.

added by me:  The John Edwards thing is a bit much

Hey everyone!

The second Macbeth performance went very well...afterwards, I realized that some friends from out of town had come to see the play and pay me a surprise visit, so we ended up going out to Taco Bell (or Taco Hell as my friend likes to call it) and being our usual dorky goofy selves.

LC--I would pay to see you squeak like Cousin It, lol!

Swishy--I'm not one to cheer break-ups right now, though I will say I'm glad that your brother may be splitting with the girlfriend-in-law-from-Hell.

What is the name of the restaurant you work at, btw?  Since we don't live too far apart really, maybe one day I could arrange to pay a surprise visit (and to Laura also)!

DR Maya: Need not to know trivia. When the Taco Bell franchise arrived here in OZ it was rechristened Taco Bill. I have no idea why. I think your "Burger King" is franchised here as "Hungry Jacks". KFC & MCD were left alone. I think that is all Ron's subliminal work. When I was much much younger , one of our local fast food outlets was "Mr Chips".

Well, tonight I have watched Hal March and the "$64,000 Question" sponsored by Revlon and its new, divine color "Snow Peach"!!!

And then, it was "My Little Margie" and that theme song that suddenly struck a chord and I remember it vividly as something I used to hum to myself as a child.  I had totally forgotten that Hillary Brooke co-starred as her father's "gal pal" Roberta!  And Willie Best as Charles!!

And then, there was "The Gale Storm Show" aka "Oh! Susannah" in which Gale sang two, count 'em, two songs, both of them from her new Dot single.  Funny how I'd totally forgotten about her singing in that show.  And the numbers were done quite well, too.  Given that Nick Castle staged them, I shouldn't be surprised.  It's amazing how slight Gale Storm was...tiny little waist.  Lord knows those days are behind her (and me).  But what fun!  And dear, sweet Zasu Pitts with her hands all aflutter with a life of their own sometimes!

I only watched part of "The Millionaire" -- Miss Allison Hayes co-stars in this episode.  It was time for "Miss Match" and I'll take it up again later.  I'm promised "Car commercials" on the end of the tape.

All of this was a surprise tape courtesy of one JRand53 of Indiana who took to heart my waxing nostalgic just one week ago on this here unseemly forum

Thanks, Jack!

To be fair to fans of the original "Mutiny on the Bounty," I'm happy you are getting a DVD of this great adventure film.

I'm a huge fan of the 1962 remake with Marlon Brando.  It's a grand adventure, brilliantly filmed and acted with one of the all-time great movie scores!  It's dazzling in its widescreen laserdisc presentation and I'm shocked and appalled iit isn't yet available on DVD.

And, I'm a fan of the 1968 remake of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips."  I'm sure this has been discussed in this forum several times.  O'Toole is masterful in the role of Chipping and Petula Clark is heaven as the music hall star he woos and marries.  Yes, it's a deviation from the original story in several ways, but it's a sublime movie-movie, gorgeously photographed, wonderfully scored with great lilting tunes (and some incredibly bad lyrics in a few of the songs, but they're so bad they're wonderful, too).

Its widescreen laserdisc presentation is also dazzling and the film needs to be on DVD with the best sound reproduction possible.

"Mom, you can say 'toilet paper' over the phone."  Richie Cunningham to his mother, Mrs. Cunningham.  (from "Happy Days")

DR TCB--My answer to the question you probably forgot you asked is puhleeze.  Not in the least.

DR Michael Shayne--One clue that your website source about where QFaD was filmed was suspect was that it placed the Pantages Theater in the diamond district.  The diamond district is in downtown L.A., and the Pantages is in Hollywood.  You can't believe everything you read on the web, to make an obvious point.

DR MS again--Love the suggested title change for Urinetown!

If we combine two threads of conversation from earlier this evening, we could have Bjorn on a Donkey.  Not sure if such a film could be legally sold or presented everywhere, but I'm sure it would find its audience.

Back from LA JUIVE. I made $35 in tips tonight, which is FABULOUS compared to the usual $10. Now I'm eating shortbread cookies (I think Walker's Shortbread Rounds and/or Fingers are truly God's gift to the world) and I'm watching "Murder By Death," thanks to NetFlix. What a great movie.

I have only seen the Midler GYPSY once, and I don't remember it at all. It's apparently not available on VHS or DVD, since Amazon had used copies for $85 a piece. YIKES!

I can't tell which direction Peter Falk is looking...that creeps me out a bit.

Got an early copy of THE BOY FROM OZ recording. It's a very good representation of what you would see onstage, though I must say Mr. Jackman is far more appealing onstage than he is on disc...not to discount his singing, but he truly sparkles when you see him in person.

I think everybody oughta get off of Prince Charles' ass (so to speak).  I think he gets a bum rap and is actually one of the more with it royals (even given Camilla...we all have our Achilles' heel).  Precious Diana was no bed of roses and could be immature and manipulative.  It was really a case of two people thrown into an untenable situation by the strictures of royalty.  Neither were particularly bad, but they should have never been together.

DR Ron, I agree about the O'Toole CHIPS.  I've got a real soft spot for that film.  It's sort of my wife's and my movie.  O'Toole's astounding and everyone in it acquits themself well.  Not the least of which is the ex-Mrs. O'Toole as the divine Ursula Mossbank.

Charles:  Who do you mean exactly, when you say they should get off Prince Charles ass?  And in regards to what?  Are you talking about the press, or the people here in America, or the British people.  I don't think Americans have any concept of what the royal family means to England or to the British people.  And as for the press, they are going to be the same, no matter in what country they reside.

George: I never cease to be amazed at the trivia that resides in the memories of Hainsies and Kimlets.

Tom, you can't begin to imagine how often I surprise myself!   ;)

Ozzie:  Why do you think George isn't posting more?  Do you think he is eating the rest of last night's caramels?

No, actually I'm eating my salad from Wendy's...and it takes a long time to catch up on reading posts (since post #165) while eating a salad.  I do have a few left-over caramels (very few) but they'll be saved for another day.

After work today, I ushered for a concert by George Winson, here in Olympia.  He's good.  His music is little monotonous for my tastes (a very cynical friend of mine says "masterbatory"...but I don't), but he has real skill as a pianist...unless he doesn't know how to read music.  For some reason, watching him play (without any music) made me wonder.  I'd read that Vangelis doesn't know how to read music.

Well, since it doesn't look like we are going to make it to 600 posts today, I might as well say Good Night.
