Title: THE MIRACLE WORKERS

Well, you've read the notes, you've worked the notes, the notes have worked you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - if they ever do, it really will be a miracle.

The most exotic of pets that I've ever had was when my dad was in the army and we (dad, mom, sister and I) were living in Germany (when I was 4-6 years old).  My sister and I had a turtle named Herman.  We fed him dandelion leaves.  That's all that I can remember about him (her?  We just assumed that the turtle was a he).  I don't even remember how we got him or what happened to him when we moved back to the States.  Oh, well.

Now, I must go to bed and get up early in the morning, so that I can get to work early in the morning and do parts of my boss' job because he's not here to do them because had to take vacation to get married to his wife...again. ;)

Goodnight, Tomovoz and BK!

All alone here with nary an exotic pet in sight. All we ever had were doggies. We did have some standard issue Woolworth goldfish but I think that's about as exotic it ever got. We were exotic enough with anywhere from 4 to 7 children, two adults, and dogs.

Lovely to see Derek. :D

I'm looking forward to "Stages"-- Congrats on the great work.

The most exotic pet I had was a newt named "Cadeau."  I got him when I was about 12, and I later took him over to my aunt's house to live with another newt.  Cadeau lived to be around 6 years, I think.  Cute little guy with his little red boutoniere.

Work yesterday was very strange.  After I got home, I had dinner, went and did yoga with a friend and came home to take Sugar for a walk.  She liked it, but it was still 103 degrees at 9:30 PM, and I was quite glad to get home.

Off to another fun-filled day at work.

'morning...it's looking like a potential "Dilbert Day" here at work.

It was so nice to see a post from DR ozderek - best wishes to you!

TOD:  for DS Rob's 11th birthday (1996) we brought a sweet parakeet into our home.  This was during Rob's Stargate-inspired Egyptian phase, so the bird was named "Horus, the Egyptian Falcon God" - a pretty ferocious name for such a tiny creature.  He lived in our sunny breakfast room and was like a member of the family until he became ill and died, cradled in Rob's hands, on Easter Sunday 2002.  That was my one and only pet experience and it broke my heart.  Never again.

Greetings all.

No exotic pets for me.  Cats when I was an adolescent, and to which I am now allergic (well, to all cats, not those two, since they are long gone).

And now, just DC (Dear Canine) Morgan.

Can't remember if I mentioned that I will be attending the Stagedoor Manor 30th Anniversary Celebration/Reunion this weekend.  Nervous about going, since I am sure I will know not a soul there, but strangely looking forward to it.  Let's just say I am one of the lesser lights that attended this performing arts summer camp.  Amongst our alums are:  Robert Downey Jr, Helen Slater, Nicky Silver, Todd Graff, Mandy Moore, et al.

One of the reasons I decided to go was that my friend Julie Budd is playing Kutsher's (one of the last borscht belt hotels left), where the gala is taking place, on the prior evening.

Oy.

Can I also add taht I am a bit peeved that the leader of the jazz trio I engaged for my first Music at Noon concert of the year called yesterday to ask some questions about the gig.  Including what time the concert took place.  When I told him Noon, he said he didn't realize that, and couldn't get the group here since they are all professors at various schools in the area.

Then why say yes in the first place????  It's Called Music at NOON, after all!

Did anyone ever have a parakeet that could talk.  I have only vague memories of Chi Chi, my family's talking keet.  I know he said "Hello" and "Merry Chris-chris-chris-chrismas".  And my aunt had one that said "Who are you?" (a Who fan, obviously.)

Sadly, the ability for keets to talk was lost due to overbreeding.

Greetings and salutations.

TCB: You're too kind. I wish I were still so cute, but I'm afraid I've put on a bit of weight since I took this job. I guess that means there's just more to love...?

Hisaka: A young Tony Curtis? I'll take that!! Thank you very much. :)

I had exactly six pets as a child: 4 goldfish that my uncle apparently stole (along with the tank and accessories) during a drugged-out stupor. He gave them to me as a Christmas gift. We didn't know they were hot goods until a couple of years later. How do you STEAL a 20-gallon fish tank???

I also had a cocker spaniel named Buffy and a cat that I adored named Princess. I didn't pick that name - the neighbors did...when they named their cat Princess. I was totally uncreative at the time and stole the name 'cause I couldn't come up with anything better at the time. Somehow she became known as Princess Anne. I was a horrible pet owner - I didn't take care of her as well as I now know I should have, but BOY! I loved that cat. I miss her.

And then there were the mice...but they weren't pets. They were roommates.

When I went back home to live with my folks after college (trying to save money to move into an apartment, but graduate school and starting my teaching career made if difficult), I got myself a parakeet which I named Murray (after Murray Slaughter on THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW). He lived about two years, but was really rather feisty and not very friendly.

The guy I carpooled with to work for 20 years was a science teacher who set up an aquarium every year in his classroom. The year he retired (three years before I did), he gave me two goldfish from that aquarium, and I kept one alive quite a long time. The other died pretty quickly. I never did name either one.

And we have another furnace-like day here. It was 84 at 9 a.m. this morning. We've had thundershowers two of the last three days in the late afternoon, but they don't cool anything off. They just make the grass grow (I see mowing coming up this weekend.)

DR MBarnum, here are the links you asked for.  It is the canoe jam site.

Here is the main link:
http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/TV_Shows/B/BigBrother6/home.html

From there you click on the big brother 6 chat icon on the right.

That will give you today's chat.  But click on "today's transcript". It is much easier to follow (otherwise if he's updating the chat, it will move fast).

You can't just save the "today's transcript" link because he archives them after a few days (you can click on archives to see what he's done).

This is today's transcript's link which is good for today (and yesterday and the day before):

While growing up, we had fish (mostly tetras) and parakeets.  I don't remember much about them, really.

The major pet in our house was Shortz, the miniature daschund.  My mother was terrified by large dogs, and even getting her to accept Shortz took some doing (although, once that barrier was breached they were very close).  At one point during high school, my sister built a maze and brought a white mouse into the house.  Shortz knew that the mouse was there, and every chance he got would try to "investigate."  Even after the mouse was long gone, he would try to check the shelf where my sister had kept him.

Der Brucer could tell you, of course, about a snake and a very large rat that his children had as pets.  It all sounds very Harry Potter, if you ask me.

And there were the cockatiels, Mucker and Simon, that we owned when der B and I first got together.  Not very friendly birds, in fact downright nasty.  Fortunately I wasn't into cooking at the time, but I doubt they would have tasted good.   :o

When we were kids, we had a pet alligator for a short while (actually a kaiman? caiman? is what it actually was) until it got too big to live in the small fish tank it was in and would get out.  Now that I think about it, I have no idea what happened to it or how my parents got rid of it.  I don't think I want to know.  It never had a name and I was never particularly attached to it.  Repitiles are not my thing.

We would also collect tadpoles from the local pond when young and put them in a fish tank.  When they would get their back legs, they would jump out of the tank and you would find them dead on the kitchen floor the next morning.  I think they eventually got released back into the wild.

We had baby chicks one Easter.  As they got older, they were given to a local farmer.

We also had three ducks which were eventually given to the Cincinnati Zoo.  I think we got them in memory of Pecky, which was a duck we had in Pennsylvania when I was very young.  Years after we had moved away, we heard from the people who had taken Pecky that he had died, defending his family from a marauding racoon.

We also at various times have had parakeets that my mother mostly kept in her kindergarten class.  Tarzan (there was a Jane) was a very good dice-thrower.

The Lovely Wife had finches for awhile,  starting out with Applegate and Lola...and then a series of wives for Applegate after Lola bit the dust.  The last of his wives..an awful shrew...died in an earthquake from shock.  We didn't mourn her...she was an a "filthy, disgusting bird."   It was the only damage we had in the earthquake.  Applegate got out of his cage one day and Humbug, our cocker at the time, got him in her mouth.  Though I manage to extricate him, he died moments later, either of shock or a puncture wound.

Those were our exotic pets...you've heard all about the various dogs...Hotspur, Humbug, Cully, and Tewkesbury...in the past and, of course, the cat, Mosby the Grey Ghost.

Look at me. Posting during the day, just like days of yore. And days of my as well.

I had a little turtle once. When I lived in Brooklyn, my downstairs neighbor had a parrot, and it would freak me out when I went to feed his dogs because parrots don't just sound like the "polly wanna cracker" parrot voice we hear in cartoons and movies. A parrot can mimic the exact sound of someone's voice. So I would be over there and hear the guy say, "Hello there!" but it would be that creepy bird.

It's one of those curious John Wayne films that make me wonder WHAT on earth was the studio thinking?

It has gorgeous production values and a top-notch music score by Hugo Friedhofer.  There are good performances in the film...but Wayne...and Sam Jaffe...really grate on my nerves.

I'm with DR Tomovoz when it comes to exotic pets.  Some animals simply don't belong in homes.  (It's something we just generally don't talk about in this apartment housing a pair of sugar gliders ;))

All we ever had in my house growing up were dogs and cats, plus my sister at various points had a pair of gerbils and a guinea pig or two.

Ron I asked since I was tempted to vote for it and was curious if you had made your decision without reading THE KITE RUNNER.

I'm afraid I'm a tad biased since I am a child of the south.

The other three books are marvelous, though I have to admit I don't like a lot of pain in my reading.  I'm more inclined to put "Plainsong" in second position.

The other two deal much more with guilt and emotional turmoil.  The older I get, the less I embrace the subject matter.

And...if I'm being honest...I'm worn out with Vietnam novels by writers working out their angst.  My dad had WWII Pacific Theater memories that haunted him his entire life.  I'd much rather have learned/read about his Korean experiences and why they bothered him so much.  As with anyone from his generation, not much was ever said as all feelings were internalized.

Once again, readers in our multi-county area are being asked to vote their choice for the 2006 community reading program:

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
Plainsong, by Kent Haruf
The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

Any DR reactions?

My opinion is that with any list that includes To Kill a Mockingbird, To Kill a Mockingbird always wins.  And if anyone has already read it, read it again!

I have had an Eskimo Spitz, a cocker spaniel, multitudes of goldfish and guppies, a chameleon, and three cats as pets in my lifetime.

None were exotic...except in terms of being complete wonders to me.

I agree about exotic pets and could never cage a bird, except for while tending to one in need (we did raise two baby Robins before releasing them).

I must admit I love Bryan’s Sugar Gliders, especially when they crawled all over me and under my pajamas while I was sleeping.  He did offer to put them in their cage at bedtime while I was there and I declined his offer.  At night his Sugar Gliders are free to roam his place and they have a grand time doing so.

I'm really mentally tuned toward London this morning.  I cannot imagine what folks there must be feeling/thinking/fearing.

Tony Blair needs to continue to reassure them and the rest of the world that nothing and no one will keep Britain from its daily business.

Thirty three years ago when we purchased our first Siberian Husky most people had never seen one.  We were constantly asked if he was a wolf.

When Echo was a puppy it was very rare to see a Bernese Mountain Dog.  I’m sorry to say that is changing.

Bryan had gerbils when they were still fairly uncommon.  He has had an iguana and still has Sugar Gliders.  There was the baby possum he rescued and raised but he kept it wild and released it.

The birds, frogs, rabbits, turtles and hamsters I have had all had sad endings that still haunt me so I won’t go there.

Why does the caged bird sing?

Ms. Jeanine Tesori is in the office today correcting orchestra books for CAROLINE, OR CHANGE before they go to print. She's playing the cast recording at top volume in the conference room while she reads through the books and I love it! This tiny little Italian woman wrote that incredibly ethnic score. And I also watched the first hour of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. It lacks the slickness and big budget of the "official" James Bond films, but it's an OK remake of THUNDERBALL.

The transfer is only mediocre. SOme of the color has faded, and there are age spots on the transfer. The sound lacks bass even though it is Dolby Surround.

I just realized today that the Rhino label issue of the movie soundtrack of GIGI has Leslie Caron's vocals (with piano accompaniment) that were not used in the film. (Betty Wand dubbed her vocals.) I don't have the CD, but I listened to the excerpts on Amazon today, and it's crystal clear why Caron's voice was replaced by Wand's. Having two talk-singers (Jourdan being the other) would be one too many in a musical by Lerner and Loewe.

So I found out today that I will be leaving my job earlier than I thought.  There has been increasing conflict between my boss and me, and she told me today that she felt it would be best if I exit in 2 weeks rather than 6.  The 2 weeks are for creating "reference guides"  of all of the information I have and every process that I carry out for my replacement after I am gone.  My reward if I carry this out and "put a smile on my face" while I am doing it, will be 2 weeks of additional severance.

Part of me is thrilled that I've been given an early ticket out of there, and part of me is bummed that it is ending this way after almost 4 years of partnering with and supporting this person.  I'm going to try to think good thoughts and stick with being thrilled. :(

DR TPunk, that is probably the best way to go.  Leave with a smile on your face and don't give the joint a second thought once you are gone.

Or...

Or...you could start planting some empty vodka bottles in out-of-the-way hiding places in the office. Mix up a few files.  And then off-handedly mention to your replacement that she should be careful because Mrs. So-and-So drinks a little.  And then leave with a smile on your face.

Der B and I were busy dogging again today.

First, we were off to the pound, taking pics of four different dogs this time.  Good news: the very old poodle and the shiz tsu (sp) have already been accepted, because of the pics, by other rescue orgs.  The two labs haven't been rescued yet, but we've good hopes for them.

Then, we drove to the home of an airline stew, who had taken in a corgi/lab stray named Annie.  Wonderful little girl (so was the stew), but the stew knew she couldn't care for the pup properly because of her job.  Fortunately, between when we took Annie's pics yesterday and today, der B had arranged for a temporary home for her, a family with two other dogs and an eightteen-month daughter who loves the doggies.  We drove Annie to her new temporary home, and she immediately fit in.  Der B is sort of hoping this "temporary" home will become permanent.

Saturday, my next day off, we'll be helping transport sixteen puppies from the home of one of my coworkers to a facility that specializes in pups.  That will be one where I hope we get lots of pics!

I had forgotten that Rowan Atkinson played a small role in the film (another of his patented schlubs), and Alec McCowan was rather OK as 'Q,' but he wasn't given the snappy patter with Bond that Desmond Llewellyn was given in the "official" series.

I have indeed been the owner of both a rat and a pair of sugar gliders.  Shy, my little rat, was a great pet.  Aside from dealing with the "eww, you have a rat!" type comments, I loved it.  I am now the owner of two little sugar gliders...much to the dismay of Jed.  We avoid discussion of "exotic pets" in general, and I try to minimize contact between the suggies and him.  As much as I love them, however, they are somewhat difficult to fit in a busy life that involves such things as work and travel...so they might be going to a new home in the near future...we shall see.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon! Good Evening!

Whew!  Another long, but good day.

Today was the Dancers Who Sing Call.  We had three groups of men, and four groups of women - about 175 people in all.  Pretty good turnout.

There was one moment of "excitement" during the women's call.  I had just started playing "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal Mo" for the umpteenth time, when I heard this "pop", and then a bunch of "ooohhss".... I stopped playing, and when I looked up from the piano, I saw that one of the ladies was lying on the floor.  People rushed to her to help her out.  Some people thought it was her hamstring, others thought it was her back.  It turned out to be one of her knees - it just popped out.  However, in a few minutes, she was able to stand up, and we helped out of the room and out into the lobby.... -Where about 15 people starting walking up to her with bottles of Advil, Tylenol Aspirin and pain killers.  -It was actually kind of comic - and even she had a good laugh over it.

...And then we all took a deep breath... well, two of them, and went on with the auditions.

After the auditions, I walked around midtown (again).  I ended up at a place called Mama Empanada - or is it Empanada Mama? In any case, whatever order the words fall, the food was very good.  And cheap too!  The empanadas ranged in price from $2.00-$3.00, and they are fried to order.  I had originally planned to eat at the counter along the wall, but...
Title: Re:THE MIRACLE WORKERS
Post by: JoseSPiano on July 21, 2005, 11:09:05 PM
...But as I was waiting for my order, another conductor/keyboard player I know walked in.  So we ended up grabbing a small table and eating there.  And we played catch up too.  -He was the assistant for the Aida tour that I played for at the Kennedy Center - and that DR JRand saw in Indy (and liked very much).  And it also looks like he'll be throwing some work my way too.  He currently subs in for a couple of show on Broadway, and he also plays auditions from time to time too.  However, auditions are not his favorite thing to do, and since I do like playing auditions...

;)

A very nice dinner indeed.

Ann, I just read about sugar gliders after never hearing of them before today. One site said if they don't get enough attention, like a couple hours a day, they die of loneliness. How strange. Do yours seem as needy as all that?

An hour or two a night is ideal, yeah.  But those figures are more for single kept gliders.  I keep my two babies as a pair, which is healthier for them.  They're brothers, and they've lived together from day one.  They can entertain themselves pretty well on days that I can't let them out to play.

...and right down the street from the empanada place is a place called "fluff".  It's a small coffee/sandwich/dessert place with their dessert creations being their star attraction.  -And they also make homemade marshmallows there - thus, "fluff".

Besides the usual cookies, cupcakes and cakes, they also sell homemade versions of Twinkies (called a 'fwinkie'), Ho-Hos, and Ding-Dongs.  I did not sample any of their goodies, but I'm sure I'll make it back there someday.

And then I headed uptown to meet my friend, Matt, who had come up from Richmond for the weekend.  We grabbed a bite to up there, and then took the A down to Times Square.  We both browsed a bunch at the Virgin Megastore, but didn't buy anything.  *I was really tempted to buy couple of neat 2-CD compilations of various types of music that were only running $9.99 per set.  One was called "Divas" and it covered various "divas" and their signature hits - all the way from blues, jazz and up to disco.  There was also a collection called "Lounge Lizard".. an "Easy Listening" compilation... and a "Music for After Midnight" collection.  -And, all two-disc sets for just $9.99.

-I may go back later for them.  They seem like ideal car-, train-, plane trip music.

Then it we both went to "therapy".  -My second time there, his first time.  We hung out for a while.  They had some "special interest entertainment" tonight it turned out.

I left after about an hour.  Matt stayed.

As for pets...

We had a poodle, Princess, when we lived in Seattle.  She was anything but a "princess".  Always digging her way out the yard, and when she didn't like someone, she really made it known that she didn't like them.  She even bit one of the next door neighbor kids.  She had come from the pound, and I'm guessing now, in retrospect, that she probably came from an abusive household.

We also had hamsters, gerbils and fish from time to time.  The names escape me right now.

And we could never figure out the proper way to prevent the gerbils teeth from growing.  We were instructed to make sure they always had something to chew on in their cage in order to curb the growth of their teeth.  Well.. their teeth only seemed to get longer and sharper.  My Dad got bit a couple of times trying to catch them after they had escaped from the cage.

And that's my pet report.
