Title: FIDGETY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fidgety like me, and now it is time for you to post until the fidgety cows come home.  To it, I say.

Okay why are there no posts?  I have never seen that before!

Anyhow for those who watch Big Brother the nominations are up!
(I will leave it as a link in case some don't want to see them).

http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/TV_Shows/B/BigBrother6/home.html (click on chat icon, and it will be written at the top).

I will say this. I  love Kaysar!

DR RonP, re: nominating Janelle, I think that is a bad idea.  Because if she didn't come off, then the core alliance would vote her out.  If he wanted to put Eric up, he would have to use someone else as a pawn (like ivette). Someone who he didn't care if they got booted.

I am actually pleasantly surprised by the noms, because I was thinking that Kaysar was buying into what a certain smart player was feeding him.

Good morning, all!  I've just put laundry into the dryer and I'm about to listen to a couple of DARLING OF THE DAY tracks to make sense of the lousy manuscript I'm holding.  The good news is I'm down to the last two numbers.  Tams-Witmark is now desperate to get a completely cleaned up GOLDEN APPLE from me, so as soon as DOTD is over, I'll be living at Lexington and 50th Street.

TOD:  I've had some insufferable waits in my life, in some of our toniest air terminals.

And...
To a poor boy who is very addicted to Diet Coke and is fidgety now.
I wonder why you don’t use any delivery service to replenish YOUR OWN Diet Coke supplies. Since you’d know how many cans/bottles of Diet Coke you have a week or a month, it’s easy to order them as much as you need and you don’t have to run for them any more.  Just a suggestion. :-*

Thank you for the photo of Eiko Ando, DR Mbarnum.

Ultimately I watched "The Barbarian and Geisha"and I enjoyed it beyond my expectations. John Wayne, who played the first U.S. Consul-General to Japan, looks quite different from his image in other western films I’ve ever seen. However, he’s majestic and statly in it. Besides, thankfully the director John Huston made it with quite correct understanding of Samurai spirit, more than Last Samurai (in my opinion).

Good morning, fellow dear readers.

It is 5:15 a.m. and a nippy 83F outside, thanks to the lovely rain we had last night. It will be hot and sticky today, but hopefully less than 110F today.

The yard sale has been extended, and this will be the last day. While that's going on inside, I'll be planting flowers outside.

Good morning DR ELMORE!
It’s rain and a little chill, in Tokyo.
The Houston Grand Opera Cast CD from Porgy and Bess is the one I ordered (not received yet). The CD was recommended a few dear readers including you, DR ELMORE, so I pick it up. Thank you.

Easy question for me about weight gain and weight loss because it happened in the same part of my life.

The first 10 months after I retired, I did nothing but sit, eat, read, and watch TV. I stopped exercising, I did no shows, I took no dance classes. I gained enough weight to weigh 229 pounds, by far the heaviest I had ever been. I was then cast as Alan in BABY and could not get all the way though "The Plaza Song" with its exercising choreography and still be able to sing. On top of that, I saw a publicity picture of me in a sweat suit, and I did not recognize myself with this totally round basketball-shaped head and triple chin.

In the middle of that show, I started exercising again and I continued exercising and watching what I ate through the rest of that summer and into fall. By October (diet started in June), I had lost 42 pounds, and I promised myself I would never let myself weigh over 200 again in my life. So far, I have kept that promise, but for soimeone who loves to eat (and to eat all the wrong things for god health), it is a major chore in my life and a constant struggle.

After the two thunderstorms we had yesterday in addition to all the rain we have had all week, my lawn is overgrown again, and I must get out and mow the grass. A little bit ago, it was still wet from last night's rain, so I'm waiting for the sun to dry the grass out enough for me to mow without it being too soggy.

I read this morning that at long last, Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT is being released on DVD by 20th-Fox on October 18th. This is, I believe, the last of his American films to get a DVD release, and I'm looking forward to having it.

Whew!  It was a very busy week at work and I'm glad the weekend is finally here.  I'm about to venture out in the heat to go to Sioux City's first Renaissance Festival.  It's supposed to be pretty good, much better than expected for a first year.  With the Minnesota Renaissance Festival so close, there are high expectations. I hope they pull it off so we can make it an annual event.

Yesterday the heat index was 118 degrees at 6:00pm and still 108 degrees at 10:00pm Yikes! I pity the guys in the jousting gear and the horses under them!

We're supposed to have a heat index of about 120 degrees today. I can't wait until this heat breaks. With the humidity it's like walking around with a wet electric blanket wrapped around you....not that I've ever done that....

I did catch BB6 on Thursday and love the updates from the 24/7 cam. Still getting into it, so I'm not really sure who I would like to see nominated. I'd love it if Eric gets the boot, but I don't see Kaysar nominating him right away.  Kaysar is smart and I am dying to see how he gets even for the way Michael was treated. I think he'll find a way.

As I recall the pairs will be revealed to the houseguests tonight. I can't wait to see how that stirs things up!

DR Rodzinski - Are the cats hurting each other when they fight? If not, they may just be establishing who is going to be in charge.  My cats love each other and can be very tender, but they still love to fight and wrestle at times.  As long as they aren't hurting each other, they'll sort it out

In one year, I gained fifty pounds, and I'm glad of it!

Let me explain.  Back when I was in high school, I was a rail-thin kid who somehow managed to stretch 145 pounds (max) onto a 6'2" frame.  I'm sure I had other reasons for having a lousy self-image, but being this thin didn't help matters any.  That it was a genetic thing (my father had been the same way, stretched on a 6'4" frame) didn't matter, either.

The real problem was that I stayed that weight for a long time, just as my father had.  Der Brucer and I had already met, twenty years ago, and I still weighed the same 145 pounds.

That I was smoking didn't help matters any.  Der Brucer was smoking, too, however, just another of the miriad things we had in common.

Then came the time that I decided to quit smoking.  I somehow managed to do it cold turkey, and was a total bitch for about a month.  (I am normally only a partial bitch.   ::))  Der Brucer quit smoking about a year later, but that's another story.

The weight gain started, of course.  Since I no longer had the tobacco interfering with my tasting food, I became much more interested in eating (this was before I started cooking, by the way).  The real test came a few months later, when I realized it was time to buy myself new pants, ones that fit.  By that time, I had gained twenty-five pounds.

Those pants only lasted about six months before I outgrew them, too.  Fortunately, this second re-wardrobing was the the last, sort of, as my weight stablilized, sort of.  By the end of the year, I had gained fifty pounds.  Put another way, I had increased my weight by a full third of what it had been before.

This took some getting used to.  If I'd thought men joking about women's complaints about "water weight gain" to be crass and boorish before, I now had solid evidence of what it felt like.  On the other hand, I was no longer that skinny twerp.  My self-confidence began to build.  I became mellower.

Remembering that my father had also been a smoker, I checked with him.  Yes, he had also gained to his present weight after quitting smoking.  Upon reflection, he quit smoking when he was about the same age as I.  And he's much happier now than he remembers himself being before he quit and gained.

Let this be a lesson to those who smoke.  You'll be happier if you don't.

As for today's Topic...  Hmm...

Well, the most weight I've lost has been 16 pounds in 11 days.  And that was just last year.  When I had the dual - and dueling - bacterial infections in my throat and sinuses.  Alas, those 16 pounds were truly "sick pounds", and they came back on as I was regaining my health and getting back to normal.

As for the most weight I've gained... Well... I still remember watching the numbers on the scale creep up all through high school.  Each year, we would all be called into the school gym where they would take our height, weight and do that color-blindness test (the ones with the numbers made out of different colored dots).  Of course, they would sort of yell out the numbers for the height and weight - one person would measure, and then the other person would write down the numbers.  Depending upon who was around you in line, it was only a slightly uncomfortable ordeal or it was a very uncomfortable deal.  By my junior year, however, they stopped "yelling" the numbers out loud - at least for the girls.

In any case, I crossed the 200 mark sometime in my junior and senior year of high school.

Then throughout college, I eventually creeped up to 210... 220... 230... And I topped out at around 235.  -But I carried my weight well, as they say.

;)

A couple of years ago, I finally got sick of looking for pants in waist sizes that I didn't like to look for.  So, I started being a bit more active, and a bit more conscious of my diet.  It was a very gradual weight loss over the years - with various diet and workout regime attempts thrown into the mix.

Right now, I tend to hover around the 205-210 range.  The weight numbers I've come to accept.  It's the waist numbers that still bug me.  However, I've actually maintained my current waist size even though there have been times when I was "lighter" and my waist was actually "larger".  I think it's just been a matter of me getting older and my body just settling down as it were.

*I did put on about a 5-7 pounds during the past couple of weeks in DC.  I just had way too much free time to be lazy since I ended up "walking" for the last half of the run of Mamma Mia!.  But I can already tell that my body is getting back into shape/back to normal after just this past week in NYC.  And that's due to all the walking, and the fact that with the schedule I've been on, I've been eating regularly and at normal hours.

Hmm...  I think I need a Fat Witch brownie today.

;)

*But I'll walk all the way from the Chelsea Market at 14th and 9th, up to Columbus Circle at 59th... At least!

:)

Well, that's one chore finished. Got the front lawn mowed. It was 85 degrees out (before noon), but I couldn't take the risk of another afternoon thundershower. We've had them almost every day this week. The yard could have waited another day or two, but better to get it done now rather than later when it might be too tall to cut comfortably.

And I sweated enough to have lost a couple of pounds. Maybe.

I agree with you, Jose. When I had been a waist size 32 for much of my young adult life and 34 for most of my middle age, to start finding 36's too tight on me was another sign that I was too heavy for my size. I still wear a 36 waist, but it isn't snug, and that's just fine by me.

Also the expense of buying new (larger) sizes of clothes before I had worn out the old ones was galling to me. I've never cared a hoot about style, just wanted to be in clothes that were clean and comfortable, and for me, comfortable means worn well without being worn out. Maintaining my current weight is very important to me for that reason, too.

While I was mowing, my up-the-street neighbor jogging stopped for a chat. We have some development companies who are interested in buying our entire block for condo development (like what's happening across the side street from me), so it's not out of the realm of possibility that I might be moving before the end of the year.

The company would have to make me a very sweet deal to blast me out of this place, but all of our homes are rather old and none of us are much eager to pour more money into them as they are now. So, we're watching and waiting at the moment.

DR MBARNUM sent me a couple of movies.  The one that is most intriguing is JOGOKU - which I think translates as "hell" - and boy do these characters go through it AND to it!  Lots of nice COLOR!  Made in 1960, I would recommend it to any other fans of Japanese or other foreign films.

Whew!  And dig those crazy costumes.  The devil guy spends a lot of time wearing his shirt tied in the front in a midriff style - which is so becoming!

My greatest weight gain was THIS YEAR.  And I had an experience similar to DR MATT's.  I saw a photograph of myself and realized - 231 pounds is too much for me to weigh!

I started a diet and exercise regime in April.  I now weigh 203 pounds, and hope to get down to 190 pounds by the end of summer.  Less would be great - but I will be happy to be 190!

And my waist size is now a shocking 38 - but it is comfortable and I need a belt, and I can wear my shirts tucked inside again!

As for today's topic, my biggest weight gain was my freshman year in collge.  It wasn't the freshman 10 or even 15- I gained 30 pounds!  I blame it on this fabulous service called Dial-a-meal.  You could call the number and order take out from any of the area fast food restaurants: fat slice pizza, hoagies, cheesesteaks.

It took me 2 summers to get the weight off.  My first summer I lost about 15 pounds doing Jenny Craig and dancing in a show.   The rest of it came of the following summer during another show.

With my crazy schedule this past year, working full time during the day and classes and an internship in the evenings, I've gained about 10-12 pounds.  I can attribute that directly to stress and chicken nachos.

But in the few days since I found out that I would be leaving my job early, I feel like I've already dropped a few pounds.  It must have been that monkey I got off my back.

Thank you for you comments and insight on both movies.  I will now have a better appreciation of THE BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA, as I now plan to watch it again.

The most weight I have ever gained was 21 pounds when I was pregnant.  The fastest weight loss was 21 pounds in 2 ½ weeks, followed by another 9 pounds during the next month.  I assure you I was eating plenty of healthy food.

Well, I'm back from the Renaissance. Must admit I was pleasantly surprised at how great it was for a first attempt.  The heat index is 111 right now, so I am feeling quite sorry for the jousters in their full body armor in the sun.  They did do a splendid job entertaining, though.  Glad I went early.  After I was there about an hour, I met a friend who had talked me into going on such a hot day - he kept telling me it wasn't going to be that hot out. He got there and lasted about 10 minutes! LOL.

TOD - Over a period of years, I gained a lot of weight - maybe 60 pounds. Just a combination of quitting smoking, not going out dancing like I did when I was younger, having a job that I sit down all the time, just plain getting lazy etc.

I lost 45 pounds a few years ago doing the Atkins stuff but gained it back within 2 years. I lost 35 pounds between last November and February and have kept it off. I hate to admit I did it by starting to smoke again.  You don't have to all tell me that's stupid. I know it is and am planning to quit again, but it did work.

Actually, no, I'm not at all anti-pet, I'm just not one who would ever choose myself to have pets.  Don't know why, they just have no real appeal to me.  But living with a pet person isn't a problem, they're just one of those things that are purely "hers" and not "ours."

Since LA CAGE closed, I know I have gained some weight. Sitting at home in front of the TV most nights, it is VERY easy to get snack-crazy, and a couple of weeks of this plus a drink every few nights does tend to add on weight even with exercise. That's one of the great things to me about doing a show. I'm gone most nights and if I'm busy at rehearsal, I don't even think about snacking.

Hi folks.  It's been a rough week.  Lots of OT.  With the trip coming up in scarce two months that can be a good thing.   :)

It's been very hot here with rain showers almost every afternoon/evening.  With some MAJOR thunder boomers!  We had a crack the other night that rattled the windows and shook the whole house!

I woke up this morning at about seven.  It was already hot but not as bad as it can get so I made myself get up, get dressed and get the whole lawn mowed.  I finished around eleven but was so very hot and tired I went in and took a shower then lay down.  I just woke up a little while ago.

I know I'm out of the loop again.  I need to go back and try to scan the posts for what I've missed.

How is DR OZDERICK?

Welcome to new member FJL! Please tell us about yourself.

BTW, I spoke about this board yesterday.  I had to take a business writing class and I used HHW as an example of how people write to communicate.  How we use the smiles at the top of the board to show emotion so others understand when we are saying something in jest.   :D

How exciting to have your first RenFest, DR Cillaliz!  Ours in normally held in the Spring.  Around March/April.  I LOVE it and go every year.

TOD.  As far as weight gain, I hit 150 pounds just a year or so ago.  I went on the South Beach Diet and got myself down to 130.  Now I hover between 130 and 140.

I know I need to get back down to 120 but that's easier said then done.  I know I don't exersize enough.  Like I said above, I mowed the grass and feel washed out enough to sleep the afternoon away.   :-\

Of course, in my defense, it has been alful hot.

Watching parts of THE CARPETBAGGERS again in between doing dance numbers.....  Carroll Baker is one of my favorite actresses.  She was/is beautiful....and really gets a bum rap for some of her performances.  I seem to remember that the critics of the day were especially cruel to her in this and a few other films.  She was an actress - but she was held responsible for everything from direction to writing to costumes & hair.

Method actress who looked like a million dollars - and with good material and good director could turn in an outstanding performance.  Still does!

Off soapbox now.  Thank you.

Good evening, all!  It's very hot and humid here, too.  We just returned from a "family date," on which DH, DS, and I went to see March of the Penguins, to eat at City Barbecue and Graeter's (ice cream), and to shop for a new coffee maker.  I discovered my old one dead this morning; maybe that's why I feel so groggy - not enough caffeine.

When I had braces put on my teeth my sophomore year in high school, I dropped a lot of weight, which I managed to keep off until my late-in-life pregnancy.  Now, I spend a lot of time driving (long commute to work) and have no time for an exercise routine.  I stayed my trimmest when walking was my primary mode of transportation - maybe, DR Jose, I should move to NYC!

Welcome to FJL!

Jose, sorry I didn't see your request sooner. I have just logged in for the first time today.

Anthony is nursing a sore ankle (a left-over from the Forum production in Virginia) so I've been taking care of him. I also went to a mediocre production of The Real Inspector Hound this afternoon. A friend was in it and I always go to see shows in which my friends make appearances.

Perhaps next weekend we can get together. This evening, in honor of the heat breaking in New York (although it's due back on Monday) we had baked potatoes for dinner. We topped them with baby carrots, baby spinach, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. And cranberry apple iced tea. Very good!

Jose, I didn't even think to stay and get Miss Somers autograph. You and Jason are lucky boys. I guess I need to sing If I Only Had a Brain to help me remember those important things  ;D I can't look at a chenille throw in quite the same way again after watching Miss Somers re-enact the birth of her son on that barcolounger. In fact, I don't think I can ever sit in a barcolounger again!!! Feather boas, too, will have a different meaning thanks to Miss Somers. Am I being catty enough??? I watched New York One this morning for On Stage. It's a local half hour program on the New York theatre scene. Roma Torre had a review of Miss Somers show. It was quite funny and actually very on the mark. But enough of Miss Somers. Let the dead rest in peace.

I'm having dinner tomorrow with a friend from Missouri/Minnesota/DC. She grew up in Saint Louis, went to University in Minnesota and now lives in DC. She has a meeting here in NY Monday morning so we shall sup before.

That's it from Chelsea. Jose hope you got to have dinner w/TPunk and the Rod man.

Later, gaters.

Tomozov, since I'm sure my original guess was wrong, I figure it's OK to say that when I did my first google search for the trivia, yes, RA's name was in the text of the first google entry.  Still can't find a site where they list casts of tryouts, but heck, I've got nothing to do until Monday at midnight!  :)

After that finished, I went to the shelf and pulled off RIVER OF NO RETURN which I hadn't re-watched since getting the current TV. I had forgotten that the Technicolor looks fairly faded on this (though the print is clean and artifact free). I don't think Fox did a full 2.55:1 transfer. People at the extreme edges of the frame are sometimes lopped in half; doesn't happen often, but Otto Preminger did frame a few shots with Mitchum and Monroe on opposite ends of the frame, and one with Mitchen, Monroe, Calhoun, and Rettig scattered across the frame, both of which crowd those on the ends a bit.

I do like all four songs Monroe sings in the picture.

Nothing Ben, Jose or Jason said prepared me for how wrongheaded Suzanne Somers' show was. Nobody told me there would be a song with Suzanne singing "How do I say 'Thank You?'" to the disembodied voice of George Lucas. AND THE DISEMBODIED VOICE OF GEORGE LUCAS SINGING BACK TO HER! When she brings her cart of products out onto the stage, she is only partially joking when she starts hawking some pajamas. The bathos-tub was running over, and the whole thing reeked of self-indulgence, cloaked as it was in some genuine trials SS has endured. The woman did —and I kid you not—FIVE curtain calls at show's end. And only about half of the audience was standing, most just to leave!

Truly memorable.

Jose and Jason were actually there to greet the Gal and I as we exited the theatre and they were watching with bemusement the bewildered expressions on the faces of the patrons.

We went out for some beverages and compared notes on the show. Many laughs were had, and not all of them were at Suzanne Somers' expense.

There will be a couple of potential investors at the reading - that was one of the reasons we did it.  Hopefully it will be fine.  It's just that a play like this particular play is very visual and that element (the murder) will all be read instead of acted out - which obviously isn't going to really tell or show anybody how visceral it will really be.

Then I took a nice walk down Broadway from 145th to 110th where I met my friend, David.  David moved up here about four months ago, and he works at Saks in their Home Department.  We then took the 1 - a very, very crowded 1 train - down to Times Square where we transferred over to the A, which we took down to 14th.

We took a nice walk through Chelsea Market - his first time there.  Made a stop at Fat Witch Brownies - his first time there too.  We each bought a brownie - and had a sample or two too.  -And they had the big sample pieces out today - I guess since there were close to closing for the day.

Then we just ended up walking up Ninth for a bit... Back over to Eighth and down a few blocks...  Then over to Seventh... One big zig-zag - he likes to walk a lot too.  It was the perfect afternoon for walking and people watching.  And it was also the perfect way for us to play catch up too.

On the walk down Broadway from 145 to 110, I had an ad hoc lunch courtesy of the street vendors: chicken empanada, tamarindo agua fresca, and a coconut ice.  Grand total for said "meal": $2.50!

...And I think I may walk down Amsterdam, and "gather" my lunch in the same way tomorrow.

Alas, I missed supping with DRs Rodzinksi and TPunk since I was hanging out with my friend, David, down in Chelsea.

We ended up at place called Better Burger.  Sort of a fast food menu, but leans towards the healthy side.  Chicken burgers, Ostrich burgers, Soy burgers, etc.  Plus hot dogs and "comfort loaves" - meat loaves.  I gave their Popeye Loaf (Chicken with Spinach and Parmesan) - very tasty, and the stir-fried vegetables were very good too.  *I had to eat something healthy this week.  ;)  They have a couple of locations around the city.  And since they have vegetarian options, I may add them to the Food and Walking Tour this October.

Drumstruck was a lot of fun.  Just sooooo much energy and positive energy emanating from the stage.  And some of the most expressive faces you will see anywhere - great smiles too!

One of the performers, "Tiny", who is actually a rather "ample" girl, apparently hurt herself early on.  She came out with her ankle wrapped for a few segments - or just sat them out entirely.  And even though she was limping pretty badly by the time of the curtain call, she just kept that bright smile on her face.

And, surprisingly, the show was not as loud as I thought it would be.  Well, as loud as it could have been.  However, I do wish the voices were better mic'd and mixed - they tended to get lost in the drums - and sometimes when there were no drums playing too.

I cleaned my keyboard today. :) I took off and washed all of the keys, vacuumed the board, cleaned the top of the keyboard and put it all back together in the right places!  It looks as good as new!  Just had to share. ;)

Well... I want to try to get up early-ish tomorrow and head out while the temp is still cool.  -It's a very comfortable 68 right now.

-I hope DR Rodzinki and TPunk have a nightmare free night after viewing Ms. Somers' show earlier tonight.

;)

OH!

The main writers for The Blonde in the Thunderbird were/are Ken and Mitzie Welch.  -Or as the program has them listed under the song credits: "Ken and Mitzie and Ken Welch".  They were with "The Carol Burnett Show"!

And, according to their bio in the Playbill, they've also written a new song for the upcoming TV production of "Once Upon A Mattress".  Hmmm... :-\

OH!  After just doing a re-read of the music credits, I just realized that Ed Kleban's "Self Portrait" (which was included in A Class Act) was in the show.

Hmmm...  I wonder if the folks up at R&H came down to see the show?

And word on the street is that the estate of Dorothy Fields is not too happy with the "special lyrics" that Ken and Mitzie Welch wrote for "Pick Yourself Up".  Hmmm...

And we also noticed some listings for some video clips that did not appear in the show either.  Hmmm...

And I have to say Ms. Somers totally ruined the song, "Fifty Percent" from Ballroom for me.  UGH!  And the arrangement too!  Double-UGH!

...And then there was her rendition of "If I Only Had A Brain"...

....and "Take Back Your Mink"...

However, nothing could possibly top the song "Inventory" by "Ken and Mitzie and Ken Welch".  -I guess you had to be there.  Luckily, most of you were not.
