Title: GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE, SOLD!
Post by: bk on July 30, 2005, 12:03:08 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were going once, going twice, then sold, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been sold, too, so who knows WHEN they'll be here?

Not quite ready to toddle off to the bedroom environment.  First I must do the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance).

And then I must play with my Pogo Stick.  That's ever so much fun, bouncing around the home environment like a gazelle eating cream of mushroom soup.

Having only had one birthday I don't remember it at all.
My mother remembers it well. She did get to hold me briefly but did not see me again for 45 years. I guess it was memorable birthday.

Wow, we had a thirteen hour shoot today.  It is really tough becoming a star.  Thanks to all of you who offered your support and encouragement.  It was appreciated.

Good night, dear Tomovoz!

And, good night, one and all.

My most memorable birthday was on August 17th, 1992.  Sadly, it was memorable mostly for what der Brucer and I listened to on the radio.   :P

Indeed, it was so disgusting that I'd rather not dwell upon it any more.

MR BK congratulations on your successful bids, and I look forward to the photos of the sketches!  Which wife was it?  It would be just wonderful if it was the turquoise number worn by Moonbeam McSwine aka Miss Carmen Alvarez, although all of the dresses are hilarious!

Very interesting reading all the comments about ON THE RIGHT TRACK.

It was a LONG night last night.  And we didn't even get started on it until 10:10!  But I asked LP and Pippin if they wanted to work on it, or wait until Monday.  All three of us decided to go for it, Marilyn the pianist said she would be happy to stay.

So we started.  Well, folks, this show has been a great challenge to me, and has certainly used all my training and ALL of my imagination.   I am not Mr Bob Fosse and my kids are NOT dancers....4-H kids, college MUSIC majors, high schoolers who think FOOTLOOSE is the BEST MUSICAL EVER!

My Leading Player, Matt, is VERY TALL, and comes from a very religious family, and is a talented musician and singer.  Pippin, who is Tim, is shorter and not thin - not husky, but NOT thin.

It has been my practice to OVER CHOREOGRAPH so that if something doesn't work, I am prepared with something to go into it's place.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK however was ON THE RIGHT TRACK from the first measures.  The boys knew their music cold - and we worked together using my steps, improvising here and there, and made the dance on them rather than vice versa - and by 11:15 we had a show stopping Act Two opener.

I was a bit sad as I put the last piece of paper from my TO BE DONE folder in my DONE folder....but there are still some improvements in other numbers to be made, and once the orchestra arrives there will have to be adjustments.

I will only say - don't be afraid to take a theatrical challenge.  I almost turned this show down because I didn't think I could do it.  I ended up doing some of my BEST worked ever, inspired by the music, the show, and the cast.

Crossing my fingers that our August 11th opening will prove me right!

I have only had one surprise party in my life, and it was while I was in rehearsal for MAN OF LA MANCHA about six or seven years ago. Because I had rehearsal that night, my partner at the time said for me to meet him at a restaurant on my way to the theater. I knew I'd only have about 30 minutes to eat, so I suspected nothing. I had a rehearsal to go to.

I walk in, and there are all these people waiting around this huge table, and I was flabberghasted! COuldn't believe he had managed to get them all there, and that I had no clue it was to be a party. He had also called the director and gotten permission for me to have the night off so there could actually BE a party of some length.

Definitely the most memorable birthday of my life.

Good morning!  In the on-going saga, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego Ginny?", I am posting from my mother's guest room, using her computer (which is the identical twin of my very own home computer).  After dropping in at home yesterday and going to the local Greek church for dinner at their annual festival with DH Richard and DS Rob, I came out here to spend the night and visit with Dear Niece Laura, who's here on family business.

The family business is that our aunt (Mom's sister) is moving here, to the same retirement community where my mom lives.  Laura is flying out to Phoenix today to accompany Aunt Jo on her flight here Monday.  My only chance to visit with Laura was to be here last night.  We had a nice visit and I even had a ride in her brand new Saturn Vue.

I have SO much media stored up to watch today that I really don't know where to begin. Probably with THE GREEN HORNET episodes since they're less than 30 minutes each and are quickly watched and erased. The movies will take longer.

I see that the local UPN station is rerunning this week's VERONICA MARS episode at 10:30 toinight. Not really sure if I should attempt to watch since it's obviously going to be out of order from the two episodes I watched on CBS last night.

I might record it and attempt watching and just erase it if I feel too baffled.

Memorable birthday memory:  We were supposed to be going over for a tiny dinner party at our friend Maureen's, and I dressed accordingly, in that "dress-for-lack-of-success" way that somehow rebels over the jacket and tie normally required at the office.  We were just about to leave for the tiny dinner, and my b.f. said "You're not going to Maureen's dressed like that, are you?"  In fact, given that it was my birthday dinner, I was dressed at least a little bit nicer than I normally would be to go to Maureen's.  Sure enough, as I'd guessed, there was a birthday party going on at Maureen's, and my sartorial sloppiness had given it away.

Favorite birthday was my 40th, spent at Disney World.  We could see Epcot's lights from our hotel room, and it was still dark when I woke up, so it was a great start to that day.  I'd said for years that that's where I wanted to be on my 40th, and (except for a few arguments over what parks to go to) I got my wish.   The highlight of the day was the previously mentioned (on the amusement park ride posts day), and somewhat deliciously campy, "Journey to Jerusalem" ride at Epcot.  That ride was a total surprise, and I knew it had to be savored, because it was sure to be gone after 2000, since it was part of their limited time Millennium Showcase.  Happy memory, that trip.

August 26, 1962, my twelfth birthday!

I got my OWN record player! And a globe!  I still have them both.  I used to play songs and find the cities on the globe.  Of course the geography of Dear Old Mother Earth has changed substantially since then, but now and then I still give my globe a spin and let my fingers take me on a trip around the world.

My favorite "globe" song was "Faraway Places...."

".....going to China.....or maybe Siam....I want to see for myself.  Those faraway places I've been reading about, in a book, that I took, from the shelf...."

And NOBODY could sing it like Miss Gale Storm.

I'm up! I'm up! And boy is that chocolate cupcake calling my name...

I've never had a birthday party, so I guess my most memorable birthday would have to be November 19, 1998. I was a senior in college and our theatre/music departments were presenting JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR as the fall production. Because I was in the middle of getting my senior recital put together, I wasn't allowed to audition for the musical, so I was working tech and I was downstairs in the costume shop stitching up some leper's flesh (don't ask) when my stage manager told me over headset that she needed me onstage. When I got up there, the entire cast and crew were standing in a semi-circle on the stage, the band started playing "Happy Birthday," they all sang along and one of my best friends walked out with a huge cake covered in candles. That was a pretty sweet birthday.

Yes, mentioning the cupcake has made me determined to bake cupcakes this afternoon. A friend has invited me over tonight to watch a movie, so I will come bearing a sweet gift.

I seem to be running a day behind, so I'll tell you what CD's I'm listening to:
Shirley Temple's Greatest Hits
Freddy Gardner's Greatest Hits
New Guy in Town
Romanovsky and Phillips' "Emotional Roller Coaster" and "Trouble in Paradise"
Alliance's "The Truth Begins Again"

By tomorrow I may figure out what my best birthday was.  I'm hoping I haven't had it yet.

Good morning!  I've been up since 6:30, and i've finished the laundry, cleaned the kitchen and defrosted the refrigerator.  I also did some fixes on my articles for the BABES IN TOYLAND release, and I have to go out and purchase some shoelaces before I finish the harp part to THE GOLDEN APPLE; I've got 4 of the reed books here as well, and on Monday, I'll deliver some to Tams-Witmark and bring back some more.  My goal is to be finished by Friday.

Did I miss it or did someone post that the other half of the Wright-Forrest team died this week.  They were both lovely gentlemen.

As for favorite birthdays...

My birthday, August 26 - like DR Jrand - seems to fall in a sort of no-man's land for me.  I'm either in tech week for a show, opening a show, etc.... And growing up, it was always the last week before school started back up, so most of my friends were at the beach or elsewhere for that last minute summer escape.  However...

Turning 18 - It was my first week of college at Virginia Commonwealth University.  I had managed to meet up with some really swell people - fellow freshmen - that first week.  My friend, Angie, I knew from high school.  The rest of the gang just somehow managed to fall into place.  Well, I remember meeting up with Angie at her dorm room in Johnson Hall.  When I got there, there was Angie, John, Tony, and two other people (who's names escape me now (shame on me!)), and they had a small surprise party for me.  They even chipped in and bought me a gift.  It was a Disneyland lunch box from a place called Don's Hot Nuts.  Don's Hot Nuts sold hot, roasted peanuts, but it was also a sort of antique/junk shop.  And one of the girls even made me a birthday card.  I still have the lunchbox and the card.

It was such a wonderful gesture, and it made for a very memorable birthday.  And my first birthday away from home, away from my family.  -And to think that most of us in that group had only known each other five or six days at that point and time!

*And I still have a pic from that night too of all of sitting on Angie's dorm room bed.

**A few years later, I came across that pic, and I realized something:  Everyone in that picture was gay, or if they were not out at the time, they eventually came out a few years later as gay or lesbian.

***Hmm.... Must have been Don's Hot Nuts.

;D

Good morning all.

We had a major thunder boomer last night so I was afraid to go on the computer.  By the time it was over, I was watching a show then just went to bed.

One guy at work had his computer fried on Thursday night by a lightning strike.  I guess Florida isn’t “The Lightning Capital of the World” for nothing.

How is DR OZDERICK doing?  I’ve been skimming the back posts for word and saw that he is getting very tired.   I do so hope that things start to go better for him.  Please tell him that I said that I send him every good wish to be well.

I enjoyed the photos from the past couple of days.  Godzilla, New York, the Party, etc.

Speaking of Godzilla, I’ve been meaning to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed the Jeepers Creepers CD.  I really liked “Mothra’s Song”.  I remember the Peanut Sisters.  They were so cute!

I want to go to see the Whole Foods store on my next visit.  And I’m very serious that I want to go back and have some more Southern Fried Chicken again.  That was very good.

Just about everything is in place for the trip.  I made my shuttle reservations to be picked up and taken to TIA and back home again.

I can’t wait to see TCB on TV!

I like the new picture, DR Jose.

Well, I have to go to the Ye Olde Grocery Shopping trip again.

TOD - fond birthday memories include my 24th.  Richard and I had just started dating and he brought a birthday pizza to my apartment and stood in the hall singing "Happy Birthday."

Then, on my 25th, we were having our first cast meeting after DR elmore had cast me as Lucy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.  At the conclusion of the formalities he said, "Now, I want Ginny to come up here and sit next to me."  The entire company sang and they had a cake and a Snoopy autograph hound (remember those?) that everyone had signed.  That item still occupies a place of honor on my shelf at home.

The past few years, the Religious Education Congress that I attend yearly has fallen on or around my birthday and it's always held at the Anaheim Convention Center. so I've been spending my birthday in Disneyland, which is always the best place to be.  In 1999, when I turned 30, my partner at the time sent me on a "quest" complete with clews and such and I ended up picking up 6 guests for my "surprise" birthday party that was waiting for me at the house.  That was great.  I still have the clews and such, it's a great way to celebrate a birthaday if you have time to do all the leg work and put the thing together.

My least memorable (or the one I really want to forget) birthday was in 2000.  I was in Anaheim (big surprise) but not to go to the RECongress, but to go to Disneyland and meet up with a pal of mine to see "Martin Guerre" when it was at the Ahmanson.  We all know how that show turned out!  However, that night, while asleep in my bed, (well the hotel bed), my car was broken into and my radio was stolen, a CD player and a laptop.  I woke up and found that in the morning of my actual birthday.  I drove home that day, in the pouring rain, with a boom box I purchased at Target (which I still have and use regularly) because I couldn't bear the 6+ hour drive without music.

I just heard from DRMBarnum, who's off to help Laurie Mitchell set up her table.  He loves his hotel, but he's disappointed the paintings are bolted to the walls.  There were a couple of frames he was admiring.

Most memorable birthdays, Part 2-

Turning 30 - I had just moved back to Richmond a few months earlier to take a job as the Music Buyer for one of the local music store chains in the area.  (Sadly, they were incorporated into a larger, regional chain a few years ago.)  Again, I had just happened to meet up with a swell bunch of folks.  My friends, Tim & John, had a little party for me at their house.  My other friends, Thomas, Paula and Carol were there too.  We watched some TV, ate some good food, drank some pretty strong cocktails... It was a very good time.

...And a week later, I met Steve... :)

Most Memorable Birthdays, Part 3 -

Turning 35 - This was just two years ago.  I was in Australia with Universal Studios Japan (the theme park) on an audition tour.  We were in Gold Coast, Surfer's Paradise to be exact.  Well...

Besides the thrill of being in Australia on my birthday...  I also jumped off a 10-meter platform - YIKES! Is that HIGH!!!

It was our final night in Surfer's Paradise (we would go on to Melbourne and Sydney from there), and it was also the last night that the GM of USJ would be with us on the audition tour until we were back stateside.  He hosted a nice champagne reception in his suite for everyone before heading out for dinner.  One of the toasts was to me in honor of my birthday.

Then came the amazing dinner!  -And the amazing oyster shooters!  And the oversized Vegemite sandwich!  And the chocolate birthday cake covered with Fredo Froggies, small Australian flags, and it even had sparklers too!

Good times all around!

DRJRand54, I'm not scoring THE GOLDEN APPLE.  It was scored by the composer Jerome Moross and Hershy Kay, both men much better than I at the craft.  I'm only cleaning up the original Broadway masters, which are full of errors, so that Tams-Witmark will have a complete set of masters that matches my new vocal score for the show.  I must say that examining the original scores is teaching me a lot.

Most memorable birthday:

My 40th.  I spent it in Florence, Italy, with a friend who was visiting me for two weeks (I was stationed in Naples, Italy, at the time).  My gift, other than the company and the adventure of travel, was the newly released CD of the original "She Loves Me" OBC.

During that visit, we saw Rome and Florence, hit the obligatory archaeological wonders of the former and Naples, and spent a weekend in a villa on the Island of Ischia.

It was not "in" celebration of my birthday, but it's the most wonderful think I've ever done on and around my birthday.

Ginny, you played Lucy in YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN?  I did, too, not professionally, but in the Camp Loyaltown production.  It was an all-boys camp, I was 13, and I was the only one who auditioned who had the notes, apparently.  (By the time we opened, though, some of the notes were a little shaky.)

When I auditioned, I saw the director and music director nodding, and I was sure I was going to be Charlie Brown, but nooooo, that's not what they had in mind.  Interestingly, I ended up bonding most with the boy who played Patty - go figure!

And to add insult to gaiety, the boy who played Schroeder won the acting prize that summer.  For playing Schroeder, good grief!

I am running about 5 hours behind.  Could not sleep last night. I finally fell asleep and woke up around 10:30 only because the phone rang.

I am usually up by 6 or 7.

And by the time I got things going it was only the last hour or so that I went online to catch up on things.

Loved the trivia question, but because of the nature how it was worded all I had to take it was on track and I was able to get it.  I think. Everything fits except for a couple of things. But that just might that different sources have different information.

I will give a clue so if you don't want to read it skip ahead to the next posting.

The playwright with the flop play is not William Shakespeare.

That DVD does make the TV version look pale in comparison. It was astonishingly beautiful.

So... Since I've been gone, I made a trip down to Ripley-Grier; got in about 45 minutes of practice; headed back up to the apartment; found the Fed Ex package waiting for me!; then I had to head back down to 34th/Penn Station since I had to overnight (well, two-day) some stuff back to DC that was in said FedEx envelope... They accept Express Mail until 5:00pm on Saturdays (good deal); then I headed back up to the apartment... However, the A train seemed to stop a few times between stations due to "traffic" - added a good ten minutes to the trip back uptown...

Now, I'm back at my apartment, taking a little breather.  In a little while I shall be heading up to DR Rodzinksi's hood.  I called him as I was leaving the post office, "I need a drink!".   So, we shall be meeting for drinks and perhaps some foodage.

And that's my post, and I'm sticking to it!

Notes?  There were notes?  All of mine were shaky, as I'm no singer, but DR elmore had great patience with me.  One of the next times he cast me was as The Mute in The Fantasticks, which suited my vocal capabilities much better!

Back from the Ray Courts Show with BK and Nick Redman.  What a dud!  The star turnout was very sad, though...because they've advertised in places they never had before...the fan turnout bigger than last time.

I don't know what's causing the decline, if not the death-knell, of this show...it could be the quality of celebs, the absence of a lot of memorabilia dealers who were there in the Beverly Garland days, the upping of the admission price or lesser celebrities charging inflated prices for their autographed pix.

Despite the show's lack of luster, I did manage to score a lovely Belgian Poster of Captain Blood for $150, met DR MBarnum who was cutting a swath through the place getting autographs and setting up interviews and film historian David Del Valle, a friend of BK's and Nick's and is an abolutely delightful and amusing fellow. Mr. Del Valle thinks the internet may have something to do with the decline of the show...All bigger stars are getting websites and so can do all the wheeling and dealing and signing antiseptically without ever meeting fans face-to-face.

In any event, the company was fun and we had a good time.

Anyway....

Everybody Loves The Saturday Night!

No real big birthday memory (or -ries!) for me; we've never been big on Birthdays in my family, so....

Well, please correct that! I do remember one when I was 12 (MANY years ago!!)

There was that special book, I had seen in the down town bookshop, that my mom got me and I was thrilled to pieces... because I rarely got presents or toys and seldom asked for anything... and I had forgotten about THE book!...
It was the only book of pics that was ever published in France on Disneyland, strangely titled "Le Pays de Disneyland".
I know it'll sound dull to most of you but that's one memory I cherish!
I still have that book, of course, and even found another copy at a big flee market here in Paris some years ago and ... got it!
Ain't that sickening?

The Ray Courts show, as Pogue said, was dreary beyond belief.   Except for the ongoing banter between Pogue, Redman, and BK (and David Del Valle when we met up with him) it was just really mediocre.  It's not that there weren't some fun people there, but there seemed to be a pall over everything, for reasons I think have to do with the fact that Ray's particular hand may have simply played itself out.

The vibe at the Garland hotel was much better - here the celebs are so spread out (including several that were really in no man's land - where no one was visiting them - we were there for four hours and in that time I saw no one, not one single person visiting Tommy Sands or Michael Callan.

I did have a sweet conversation with the original Tabitha, Erin Murphy.  She is a beautiful woman, I must say.  I also saw my old pal Leslie Easterbrook, whom I hadn't seen in quite a while.  Leslie was in the second production of my very first musical, Start at the Top, the same production in which Michael Burns and Donna Baccala were in.  Little known factoid: When we moved the show for the third production, in the cast were two complete unknowns - Eric Michael Gillette and Cameron Mason.  Eric went on to great success as the singing ringmaster for the Ringling Bros/Barnum and Bailey circus for almost two decades, and Cameron (Rick) Mason left my show and just a year later took part in what was the first "workshop" of a musical ever done - A Chorus Line.  He stayed with the show through the Public and right on to Broadway.

MBarnum seemed like he was having a high old time.  He ended up lunching right at the next table - we would have had him with US for lunch, but one simply couldn't ever locate him, so quick on his feet was he.  I met Laurie Mitchell, who was very sweet, and Nick and I had a nice chat with Shirley Jones.

Shirley Eaton looked really old - some memories are best left untouched by the ravages of time.

Jane Withers, on the other hand, looked GREAT.

Several Bond girls were there, including Maud Adams, and Gloria Hendry.  Gloria looks swell.  We saw Luciana Paluzzi - she still looks pretty good, too.  The biggest celeb there was Mickey Rooney - he had a consistent line of people, but nothing like the lines of old at the Garland.

I am staying in this evening - finishing Varan the Unbelievable, which is just a weak rehash of Godzilla, by the same team.  Then maybe I'll watch Dogora, Monster from Space, and then maybe the Japanese film Crazy Fruit.  We shall see.

No one mentioned it, I think, but Robert Wright passed away a few days ago.  Walter Willison, who was very close to Bob and his partner, Chet Forrest, told me the night he came over.  I worked with Bob and Chet when I recorded their Anastasia Affaire.  Walter later coerced me into performing in a reading of their musical Betting on Bertie, back in 1992, I think.  Bertie was based on the Wodehouse Jeeves stories, and I played someone called Pongo Pilkington.  Others in the cast were Christopher Hewitt as Jeeves (Chris and I really got on), Judy Kaye, Loni Ackerman, and a couple of Walter's compatriots from Grand Hotel.  The best part of doing the reading was watching Bob and Chet, just beaming, as we'd sing their songs.

Since S IS FOR SILENCE has not yet been released, R IS FOR RICHOCHET is the most recently available Sue Grafton book.
There is a large difference between "most recently available" and "last," since the latter implies that there will be no further books.

Der Brucer has been reading the series since it began, and has nothing but praise for Grafton's writing.  We've both been wondering, however, about Grafton's plans for her lead character, Kinsey Millhone: does she plan for Kinsey to reach the end of her rope when she reaches the end of the alphabet?

Quote from Bruce:
Jane, parking was hardly the problem with POP - the problem was that they let it go to seed, and with all those owners it's not surprising.

I agree, however, did you read the explanation on the link I posted?

“But in 1965 Santa Monica began its Ocean Park urban renewal project. There was wholesale demolition of nearby buildings and closing of streets leading to the park. The entire area was chaos while they built two large apartment towers nearby. In short, visitors couldn't reach the park and attendance plummeted to 621,000 in 1965 and 398,700 in 1966.”

If by the two towers they're speaking of The Shores, where I lived all throughout the 90s, they are much mistaken - the Shores wasn't built until 1970 or so.  And that's the only high rise that I know of in that area.  It most certainly wasn't built in 1965, and I'd doubt it took five years to build them - my memory is that they tore down everything on the east side of the boardwalk (including the St. Regis Hotel, where my grandparents lived) in 1969 to make way for The Shores.

Speaking of birthdays, I've recieved a challenge for der Brucer's next, which is less than two weeks away.

Every year, for his birthday dinner, he likes to treat himself to either duck or lamb.  No, not lamb chops, but leg of lamb.  And he would like a half of a duck, thank-you very much, properly roasted and not just some slices of breast.

Last year, running through the list of restaurants here in Rehoboth, which is quite extensive, we came up with just one that served duck.  Alas, it was just slices of breast.  He was quite disappointed.

Just a few days ago, I came across a cookbook from Williams-Sonoma about the cuisine of New York.  We won't go into the detail that they were really writing about New York City, not the state, and limiting themselves to Manhattan, not the city as a whole.  And I still hold that NYC does not have a cuisine of it's own, instead borrowing from everyone else.

Well, there in the book was a recipe for duck, as prepared at the Four Seasons.  It read almost to the letter as part of a running joke that der B and I have, where you start the preparation several days before serving the dish.  Or, as der B would have it written, "Day One: Catch the duck!"

All the same, der B liked the recipe, which involves an orange sauce, a gingery marinade, and letting the duck dry out for a couple of days before roasting.

Today, I made the mistake of asking him what he would like for his birthday.  "I want you to make that duck recipe," was his reply.  And our next stop turned out to be the gourmet foods shoppe here in town, where he ordered a duck for me to cook.

The Duck Follies has begun rehearsals!   ::)

I don't remember POP at all, since my parents (meaning my mother) thought it had a "bad reputation" and wouldn't think of going there.

I do remember several trips to Marineland, however, which was quite fun.  I particularly remember one year, when my sister was wearing a very pretty dress that got soaked by one of the porpoises splashing about.

Shayne, that was the one - it was a failed pilot movie of the week.  Peter Kastner was in it, and we got along famously (he used to come over to dinner, and he adored my daughter), and also Joseph Wiseman, with whom I played my sequence as I recall.  We shot it on the Santa Monica Pier.  The thing I remember most from that shoot was being whisked from location as soon as I wrapped, by limo, and taken directly to Universal in the Valley, where I looped all my dialogue right then and there.  They had a fascinating way of looping - not to picture at all.  They sent the Nagra tape back with the limo, and then they played my lines for me, and I repeated them in exactly the same way and in the same speed.  That way, you hear what you've just done, and you imitate it - always seemed like a clever way to do that.

I don’t have a single most memorable birthday.  There were numerous birthdays I was sick and there was my 18th birthday that was downright sad.  My 30th should have been great but we had just moved from California to New Jersey and I was homesick.  There was the birthday I spent in the hospital….no details needed on those.

BK, I realized when I got home I was confusing Shirley Eaton with Honor Blackman all day.  Nick must have thought I was crazy when I was talking about Pussy Galore.  It was Honor who was closed to forty when she did Goldfinger and was, at least, a few years ago writing beauty books for older women and was still looking good in her seventies.

For the record, the IMDB puts Shirley Eaton's birth year as '37 which would make her only 68.

My 16th birthday was very special with a lovely Sweet Sixteen party.

My 21st birthday, the first one after we were married, was special.  Not because I turned 21 but because Keith made it special.  Our best friends were there and though Keith couldn’t afford to buy me a nice gift he got me something I really, really wanted-a bag of Devil’s Food Cookies.

For my 40th Keith surprised me with a trip to Williamsburg, making up for once again moving me before a major birthday. :D

My 50th came close to being a real dud.  We once again had moved, this time to Ashland, and didn’t have good friends locally.  We were working hard getting the house in order and hadn’t had time to do our holiday shopping, nor had Keith had time to shop for my birthday, not even a card.  So on our first free day off to the mall we went to shop for the boys (really not my idea of a birthday celebration).  While walking around I stopped to admire a beautiful doll.  She now sits on our coffee table. :)

For those who need to know - Today/tomorrow (July 31st) is the birthday of Harry Potter.  Thanks to TCB for that information.

Sadly, Shirley Eaton looks a lot older than sixty-eight.  She looked older than Jane Withers, who's about ninety.

Good Evening!

...Back from spening a few hours with DRs Rodzinski and TPunk.  Oh!  And I also got to meet Kilbot and Walty too!

We all had a wonderful time - however, we did managed to get sucked into watching the last half or so of "Paparazzi".  UGH!  -Just how many cameos can there be in on movie?  And was Dennis Farina channeling Columbo?

;)

Ah, well...

There is more to post, but first I must pack.

Laters...

I had a nice fortieth birthday - I was taken to Las Vegas for the day.

I've had several fun surprise parties, but haven't had a surprise party in over ten years.  Oh, well.

OH!  DR Ginny - Yes, Magnolia is on the eating/walking/more eating tour of Manhattan.

*And I actually brought this eating/walking/more eating tour to some friends of mine.  -They're thinking of investing in it!

How often do they do these Ray Courts shows? Maybe they should be reduced to once a year or once every other year. Familiarity breeds, well, you know,. . . .

Der Brucer spent part of the evening watching a film called The Exorcist: The Beginning.  I did not watch it with him.  I was able to hear quite a bit of the film, however.  It was one of those films where the filmmakers decided at some point to get the audience on the edge of their seats by pumping the volume way up every time they (the filmmakers) wanted to get a reaction.  Unfortunately, this meant that the volume was pumped way up about every five seconds or so.  The end result was that the house sounded like a rickety wood roller-coaster, which is fine for the usual three-minute-or-so roller-coaster ride, but over the course of a feature-length motion picture wears out it's welcome rapidly.

Finally watched the 1934 THE MERRY WIDOW all the way through. GLorious Lubitsch direction and a very expensive production. No wonder MGM didn't break even on it!

Got through both episodes of THE GREEN HORNET today, too. Richard Anderson was the most famous actor in the guest cast, so neither of these featured stars of yore like many of the shows have.

And we had overcast skies and drizzle for much of the day, our second in a row where temperatures didn't get out of the 70s. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, but it could stay like today for a few more days, and I wouldn't mind a bit.

Why does Peter Bogdanovich think he's an impressionist? On one of the Hitchcock documentaries, he discusses several interviews with Hitchcock, and he attempts to mimic him in relating what Hitchcock said. He also tries to do Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in those documentaries.

Tonight, as the host of "The Essentials" where he was introducing THE MERRY WIDOW, he attempted to do Jack Benny while disucssing something Benny told him about Ernst Lubitsch.

Pretty irritating since he's not all that great at it.

The version of FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX that the Independent High Definition Channel showed was the 1965 version with James Stewart which I've seen and enjoyed for many years, but wasn't anxious to see again today.

It got erased about 10 seconds into the film.

If I did read about Robert Wright earlier, it didn't register. It has now.

Very sad to read this, as I thought he had some wonderful shows to his credit.

DR WFO and I both remember "Kismet" as our first real introduction to Musical Theatre.  The quartet "And This Is My Beloved" is still one of my favourites.

I've finally caught up.  I don't know if I like house-sitting at a house without a computer at the same time that my house-mate is out of town and I have to watch and entertain two different cats at two different houses.  It's all just too, too (that's two toos) much. ;)

My most memorable birthday party was my 21st.  I was living on campus at Western Washington University and my suite-mates knew that my 21st birthday was coming up.  So we all planned this party and made invitations and a lot of people showed up (including many that I had never met before).  We put on the invitation that we were going to have a Disco Birthday party for me (I still had several Donna Summer albums...yes, this was in 1987 when vinyl still existed) and that gifts were not required but key chains (which I did and still do collect) were requested.  And since I was the only 21-year-old in the suite, I had to buy the keg of beer.  I didn't have to pay for it, just get it.

So we had the party and no one threw up and we didn't get into any kind of trouble.  I didn't (and still don't) drink, but that night I forced myself to drink a large-ish cup o' beer.  It took me all night and I never even got a little buzz, but I drank it.  For the gifts, I got a lot of key chains, some even homemade, most of which I still have in boxes my extra bedroom.  And that was my most memorable birthday.

Good Evening!

Clothes are packed.  I shall finish all the "little stuff" when I wake in the morning.

I actually managed to un-pack a bunch of stuff whilst packing.  Heck, it's only three weeks, and when I need clean clothes, I can always do laundry.  I do not have to pack a clean shirt for each day of my "trip". -Which I have done before, sort of - at least two weeks worth of shirts, underwear, socks, etc.  *Thankfully, jeans tend to wear well over a span of days.  ;)

So, come morning, I just need to pack my toiletries, and my laptop.  I just did a pass through my "important papers", and I pulled the few things that I may need while I'm up at Williamstown.

...And I'll be marking up my score on the train ride up to Albany... if I'm not reading the Sunday Times... or sleeping.

;)

And while packing, I went ahead and imported a couple of the Ella Fitzgerald Song Book discs into iTunes.  Arlen, Rodgers & Hart, Berlin and Duke Ellington.  I'll take care of the rest of the box set at a later date.

OH!  While importing the discs, I noticed that the Cole Porter set is missing from my box set!  -However, I have a pretty good idea who has it... and shall e-mail her shortly!

I gotta tell you, I've never seen such a bunch of WUSSBURGERS in my life!  It's Saturday night, for God's sake - it's partay night, a night to shake one's bootay, but not here - not in WUSSBURGER heaven.  Nooooo, our oldsters have to be in bed by ten or whatever.  Well, I'm up, baby, and I'm in the mood for Parchesi.
