Title: GIRDING MY LOINS
Post by: bk on July 31, 2005, 12:05:41 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about the end of July and the beginning of August, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be directly after they gird their loins or, in their case, their tenderloins.

The"Loin King" opened in Melbourne the other night.  I think Gird may have been one of the stars.

Don't know much about movie posters at all. Years ago (45!) I had my room decorated with movie posters.  My favourite then was for "The Time Machine".  I know I also had "And God Created Women" and "Woman Like Satan" posters too.

Good morning, all!  Today's another trip to Toyland; we're finishing up final edits on the few remaining pieces, and I believe we've still got March of the Toys and Act Two Finale to do a second edit on.  Since I lose my Dr Watson next Sunday, time is of the essence, whatever the hell that means.

I've got some Golden Apple on my desk, and I'm still in my housecleaning frenzy.

DRTomovoz, I too love the quartet in KISMET, and "The Donkey Serenade" is one of my favorite Wright-Forrest pieces as well.

I always thought the poster for ANATOMY OF A MURDER was striking, but I realize I haven't seen it in over 30 years.

Have fun playing with your toys DR Elmore.
On of the first recordings I remember on 78rpm was Mr Jones singing Donkey Serenade.

As for movie posters, hmm...

It may not be my favorite, but the one that seems to come to mind right now is the one for "Jaws".

...And I believe I had a copy of the original "Star Wars" one hanging in my room when I was growing up.

...And that's all I can think of right now.  I was always more of a showcard person.

Well, I must finish packing the "little stuff" I mentioned last night, get showered, then head on down to Penn Station.  It looks like it will be a very nice day for a scenic train ride.  I just hope there's some nice scenery on the route from Penn Station to Albany.  -I'm being picked up in Albany and then whisked off east to Williamstown.

I'll be staying on the campus of Williams College, I believe, so I'll have cell phone and wireless internet service too!  However, I guess I'll find out just how much time I'll have to take advantage of those amenities once I get up there.  It's a workshop!

So, I'll be here:

http://www.wtfestival.org

for the next few weeks, and I shall be back in the City on August 21.

So, until Williamstown...

Thanks for a lot of pictures!

Dear BK, nice photos form the birthday party. The party seemed to have been in a very sociable atmosphere.

DR JOSE, lovely photos from the Big Apple. I’ll try to do your “the self-timer and no-flash mode” technique someday.  It looks effective. :)

DR MATTH’s post about Hitchcock documentaries from yesterday reminded me  about a great old book written by Francois Truffaut who had adored Hitchcock overwhelmingly. He analyzes thoroughly every Hitchcock films with Hitchcock himself in it.  When I bought the book, about fifteen years ago, I was absorbed in reading it. I watched a film, which I just read about in it, for comparing the analysis with the part of the film itself, day after day.  It’s so delightful!    I’ll reread a little bit of it tonight.   Le Cinema Selon Alfred Hitchcock is the title of the book.

I think one of my favorite posters is The Poseidon Adventure (The original vesion. I never thought I'd say that!)

Although I was disappointed that this scene didn't actually happen in the film.

It was also fun to identify where the photos of the cast are taken from in the course of the film.

They just don't make movie posters like that or have photos of the "all-star" cast anymore. With the salaries and other considerations you'd never get today actors today to do a film like this. There personas won't allow it. Can you imagine Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson or a Julia Roberts in this film. It would never work.

Here is photo of the "all-star" cast minus Eric Shea (whatever happened to him?) and Leslie Neilsen

There were six Oscar and one Tony Award winning actors in the cast. Try and get the equivalent of those today.

When I re-watched THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE a few months ago, I was shocked to be reminded that Roddy McDowall was in it. I had totally forgotten about his character. Seeing him in that picture reminded me how surprised I was that he was in the film with a nice-sized part, too.

I have that book and love it. Quite fascinating reading and for a Hitchcock fan, absolutely essential.

If I had any objection with the book at all, it was Hitchcock's non-confrontational demeanor with Truffaut. When Hitch gauges that Truffaut didn't like a particular film (can't remember the ones now; possibly THE PARADINE CASE or TORN CURTAIN) rather than defend his work or the films or explain what went wrong, he just passes over them quickly.

I don't think he was intimidated by Truffaut as much as that he simply didn't like to argue or makes scenes.

WEST SIDE STORY definitely is  my favorite movie poster. I think I mentioned here before that I had an artist friend in high school paint me a copy of that poster which I had in my bedroom in my folks' home for many years.

I also loved the hot pink movie poster for MY FAIR LADY.

I started THE WOMAN IN RED for a few minutes last night before getting involved in THE MERRY WIDOW, and the MGM transfer wasn't sterling.

It IS an anamorphic copy of the film (there's a full frame version on the flip side), but the color looks dated, and I'm wondering if it was taken from an old video master. Didn't look particularly sharp, and the color was definitely not vibrant at all.

Anyway, I'll get around to finishing it today.

I'd also like to see THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW so I can erase it from the DVR, too. Not being a fan of the director (neither INDEPENDENCE DAY nor GODZILLA are favorites of mine though they are certainly good reference audio discs to show off surround sound), I'm probably not going to love it, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm up, I'm up, even though I wanted to sleep in a bit more.

"The same rage?????"  What kind of stupid ad line is that?  So, the ocean is the villain, huh?  Got to have a villain along with your three acts, your journey, your arc, and your backstory.

I'm surprised by those who have said they don't know from movie posters.  They are the principal tool used to sell movies, and some of them are so iconic that they're almost as well-known as the films.

What would I do to fix the Courts show?  Move it back to the Garland, or find a way to have more dealers rooms.  When the book fair was at the Burbank Hilton they had many many dealers rooms that weren't on the main floor.  You simply walked through the lobby to get to them.  So, if they stay at the hotel, I'd at least do that and encourage the dealers to come back.

Hisaka, do you have any flowers blooming in your garden now?

Only a few white small roses are barely blooming now.  The temperature is too high, not only for human beings but for any flower and plant, to breathe. All pant from the heat in Tokyo.  :o :-\ Is there any cactus around your home environment? I have an aloe (it’s not a kind of cactus?) which I planted five years ago in an obscure corner of my tiny garden, however, it has a big orange colored flower every year since then. It’s strong and in tone in this quite bad condition.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is a lovely poster, and always goes for a lot of money.  The large Italian BOT poster is even better.

Some of the more lurid sci-fi posters are absolute classics - like Not of This Earth, Queen of Outer Space, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Incredible Shrinking Man, This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, and many others.  If MBarnum was here, he'd eat this topic up.

Free associating just a bit, the reference to the pink MY FAIR LADY poster brought to mind a conversation I had the other day.  I was on the phone with the bank ordering new checks.  Apparently, my account allows me to get free checks.  The lady told me that I can either have my choice of color for $7.50, or take the bank's standard checkbook for free.  I asked what color the free checks were, and she said, "They're sort of a pink, with a touch of grey."  I asked if a lot of people order the pink checks, and she said most people opt to pay the $7.50 when they hear the free checks are pink.  I decided to spring for the $7.50 checks.

The most memorable (in a bad way) movie poster for me was for the original movie WILLARD.  My aunt and uncle and grandmother had  a lovely bungalow in Far Rockaway, where my grandmother would make her truly great matzoh balls with schmaltz (had to work that word in) all year round, but to get there we had to walk from the subway.  At night, although the bungalow was in a dleightful section, the area right near the subway was creepy, and the creepy WILLARD posters were everywhere for a number of weeks.  For several impressionable years, I couldn't get the image of the rats out of my head when I went to Far Rockaway.  Or for that matter, when that schmaltzy but weird ode to the rat called "Ben" started playing on the radio a few years later. :)

And DR Hisaka, if you do go to Disney World on your birthday, I hope that - like mine - your birthday is at a time of year (in my case early May) when there are virutally no lines.  That was truly a fantasy come true.

Favorite posters:

"Spartacus" -- the original red with gold medallion images of its stars.
"Camelot"
"Manhattan" -- the one that features the photo of the bridge with the two figures in the foreground silhouetted against it.
"The Egyptian"
...and tons more.

Worst poster I've ever seen (worst ad campaign, too):

"Finian's Rainbow" -- WHAT, exactly, were they thinking?

Hmmm....

Well Mr BK mentioned ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN which is one of my favorites! It doesn't actually have much to the with the movie, though.

I like the original BEACH PARTY poster with a great ocean wave and Frankie & Annette.

Most of AIP's films from the 50's have great posters, in fact sometimes the poster & title came before the movie.  NOT OF THIS EARTH, art used on a BK produced CD of Ronald Stein's music is  great, although it's subject is NOT one of my favorite people.

Of all the movie posters I own, 25 or 30 I guess, my favorites are:

HARLOW with Carroll Baker, the second campaign with a huge portrait of Carroll!

50 FOOT WOMAN - reproduction

HIGH POWERED RIFLE - but I've never seen the movie

THE CROWDED SKY - three sheet

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Room B35 in Mark Hopkins on the campus Williams College!

A great train ride up!  Of course, I ended up sitting on the "wrong" side again, and did not have the Hudson River view outside my window, but that was OK since I ended up napping for most of the ride up.

I was met at the Amtrak station in Albany by Sidney, one of the company management interns.  There were two other people she was picking up, Patrick (Peter?) who's here with the GreyLock company, and Frances ____ who is some sort of designer - I'm thinking lighting.  We had a very nice drive from Albany to Williamstown.  We passed through lots of little towns, and there were some lovely views of the mountains along the way.

So... Now I'm here. I've met a couple of the people I'll be working with, and I'll be heading over to rehearsal in a little bit.  After lunch.

OH!  And "they" covered Roger Rees' office in aluminum foil today.  -In fact, there are signs all over the admin building with the word "TODAY" on them.  That's it.  So... I shall go and take a picture if I can. *When I walked by earlier, everyone was just in there working away as usual - of course, their chairs, desks, and computer and windows are all covered in foil!  :)

I am in the middle of watching R Kelly's "Urban Opera: Trapped in the Closet" on VH1.  It is like nothing I've ever seen, I don't know how to describe it.  It's a 5 part (the 6th installment is on its way) music video about infidelity with both a literal and metaphorical hiding/coming out of the closet.

No, he's quite big, I would guess about 18 pounds or so.  That actually added to the comedy of the situation, the front of him was all sprawled out, hanging over the edge of the seat.  The rest of him was all hunched up in back so that he wouldn't slide off.

Graceful, he is not. :)

I do have to say that I really liked the Law Firm the other night. It was refreshing to see a "reality" show where the people "dismissed" were dismissed because they didn't do the job the way they were supposed to. I discovered that I was subscribed the the Real Superpass and didn't realize it. I cancelled, but it goes until August 15, well it includes the BB6 24 hour cam.  Oh No.... I'm hooked. I watched for about 3 hours last night. It's SOOO much different and more devious than just watching the show.  A whole different perspective.

Not happy with  the Veto competition, but not totally surprised. I will be sorry to see the person go who is a foregone conclusion after the veto competition.

Can you describe what it's like to watch it. I wonder if I would get hooked.  I know i am hooked to the canoe updates.  But I feel like I would bored out of my mind watching them do nothing for most of the time.  I think i would enjoy watching the interesting bits.

And re: the veto comp and such.

It drives me crazy how the show flip flops back and forth.  Janelle/Kaysar were almost out of it, then he won HOH.  Then when it seemed like the Outcasts were golden, Maggie won HOH.  It almost seems predictable.

Btw, still no comment about what we saw between Maggie and James last night.  It made me think Maggie was much smarter than she's let on.  To me James is pretty smart, and if he thought that maggie was interrogating him like a cop, well it made me wonder if she is lying about being a nurse!

I do have to say that I really liked the Law Firm the other night. It was refreshing to see a "reality" show where the people "dismissed" were dismissed because they didn't do the job the way they were supposed to. If Roy Black can maintian professionalism and good work as the standard for who stays on the show. It will be worth watching.

I taped it. I wasn't as thrilled with the show as you obviously were.  I think the back and forth between the cases worked, but there were just too many people to really be able to focus.

I knew the girl would be gone, she was horrible.

And I agree that the guy made a huge error (what was he thinking). But I have to admit, that there were so many guys who looked similar. So when Roy cut the guy (without really going back and explaining what mistake he made) I was not clear which guy was going. I had to go back and rewind my tape to realize the blunder he had made.

I will agree, that his reasoning (roy's) were good ones.  But I don't think the show will be too popular.  The cases just weren't that interesting.  And the preparations, fighting ... weren't exciting enough.

The idea is okay. But hopefully the cases and the interpersonal relationships will get better.

Unlike the West Coast, we've had our third day in a row of highs in the 70s with rainy/overcast skies. I am loving this after the inferno we've suffered through for the previous two weeks. I will be VERY sorry to see this end.

Spent the afternoon watching the rest of THE WOMAN IN RED. The transfer was really fine overall. I would have preferred a more saturated color design, but it looked fine. It had a Dolby Surround track which made Stevie Wonder's songs sound excellent. Gilda Radner had several hilarious bits as an office mate who makes trouble for Gene Wilder.

Charles Grodin played a charming gay man in this movie. Wilder didn't write much of anything to flesh out Grodin's character, but he still emerged as a likable fellow.

One of the nice things about some of Warners most recent DVDs of classic movies is that the covers of the DVDs were inspired by poster art used in the original campaigns. Nice to see those DVD covers.

Back from Grant's and Vinnie's.  We did a lovely remix of Opposites, and now I am pleased.  Then we loaded Together Again into Pro Tools at Vinnie's, and slapped some 'verb on it, and it sounds as good as it's going to sound, which is a damn sight better than the LP.  There's no fixing the ineptitude of the way the vocals (especially the group vocals) were recorded, but we've made it sound better.

I shall now eat some food before I pass outski.

POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT

Well, last night was interesting, I'm sure there is a lot of it that isn't. There are 4 cameras you can watch, either all at the same time or choose one. It's easier to hear what they are saying when you only listen to one. There are times when they cut to the fish tank and you don't know what's going on, sometimes for a couple seconds sometimes a lot longer.  Big Brother calls people into the diary room from time to time and makes comments, like "James please turn on your microphone" etc from time to time.

I will say it wasn't as much fun to watch the tv broadcast after knowing as much as I did from the live feed.

Last night, they talked about the James and Maggie's conversation and Kaysar asked her about what she really did, indicating that there was speculation she was a cop based on her conversation with James. She didn't really answer, but her conversation with Kaysar implied that James may be or was a cop or something.  Not sure, if that's what she was sayiing. When she later asked James  in front of her group, what he does, he refused to answer and said "Maggie and I have an understanding about that" James and Maggie laughed while no one else quite got it.

Kaysar was talking to April a lot and to Maggie and others in one on one conversations. He's pretty much given up and he wants to leave with dignity.  The veto competition is over, James will most likely be off the block but it isn't clear who will go up. Most likely Janelle, but I'm guessing. Maggie and her group clearly have a plan and will follow it.

The real fun was Ivette being insensed with Janelle. She wanted to go tell her off etc. April and Beau were egging her on, Maggie and Jenn were trying to talk her out of it.  She was ranting and raving because Janelle and Howie were singing a very derogatory song clearly aimed at her while they were working out.  I don't know how that was resolved, but today Howie was singing it to Ivette and she was laughing and hugging him, so something must have happened after I went to bed.

Last night all they talked about was strategy, who likes or doesn't like who etc. So much more info than you ever get on the tv show. It was pretty interesting. Today they were talking about a lot of not very interesting stuff. They did say that the best time to be a camera man would be 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, because that's when the most happens in the house.  I didn't stay up that late, but was interested in what I saw.

Sara and James clearly don't care about anyone but Sara and James. They really have stabbed both groups in the back and I don't think they will last too long.  Ivette wants to be voted off next week so she doesn't have to be sequestered with Janelle (next week will be the last non jury member)

This afternoon, there was a lock out. While, I think, they were planning a surprise birthday party for Sarah. All were talking together except Kaysar, who was sitting nearby, but being quiet and Janelle who was laying in the sun on the other side of the back yard.

It cut to fish tank,so I quit watching.

You're probably right. I'm a criminal defense lawyer and have tried a lot of cases, so it  is especially interesting to me.  Roy did say that the cases will get more difficult. Since they are real cases (probably both sides are getting $$ like People's Court) I can see waiting to get to more interesting stuff, but it won't be anything that serious - it would be foolish to have a serious case decided on a game show.....well, with the way people are today, I guess having it be foolish doesn't rule it out!

SCHMALTZ, baby, SCHMALTZ!
I found this over at the FoodNetwork site:
Quote
Schmaltz and Gribines:
This recipe uses the fat and skin from about 4 chickens. It will keep in your freezer. For even more flavorful schmaltz, add a few cloves garlic.
4 cups chicken fat and skin, cut into 1/2-inch pieces or smaller
Kosher salt
Pinch pepper
1 cup onion, sliced into rings about 1/8-inch thick
2 cloves garlic, minced, optional

Wash fat and skin well in a colander, and pat dry. Place in a heavy skillet, and sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Cook, uncovered, over low heat (you can turn heat up a bit once the fat has begun melting). When the fat starts to melt and gets slightly brown, add onions and garlic cloves, if using, and continue cooking until onions and cracklings are golden brown and crunchy. Remove from heat and let cool partially. Then strain over a bowl to remove onions and cracklings, and refrigerate them in a covered glass jar. Pour schmaltz into another jar, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use.
Yield: about 2 cups
Just the sort of food one can get sentimental over!

Good Evening!

Back from my first rehearsal.... Whew!

Actually, it was quite painless.  We just ran two songs/scenes, and since the second scene was a reprise of the first song, I really only had to play/read/learn one song on the spot.  But things went very well, and there's still about two full weeks before they go into tech - so, there's plenty of time.

We have a houseguest.

Domino, the Dalmatian that we found roaming through the neighborhood some time back, has returned.  His master doesn't pay enough attention, and doesn't care that Domino is running around loose.  It's really a shame, because Domino is a well-behaved dog, considering the lack of care he gets.  He's rather thin, and there's scabbing on the top of his head from what might have been fleas.

So, der Brucer decided that some rescuing was necessary.  We currently have Domino in the back yard, with most of our troupe trying to figure out why this stranger has been let into our midst.  Most of them don't have any problems with Domino, but he's unfixed...just like Marty.

Exactly what is going to happen next, I have no idea.  Hopefully Domino's master will show up again.  Or maybe not.   :-\

We spent the afternoon attending the final performance of Summer Youth Theatre's Anything Goes.  Students from high schools all around us get together to do a musical every summer and it's usually quite enjoyable.  This year was no exception, but for the severely miscast Reno Sweeney, who seemed to be (badly) channeling Mae West.  They also had the Angels dolled up to look like Renee Zelweger in the movie Chicago, but at least they were trim and could sing and dance.  The guys who played Billy and  Moonface were both from Frankin High School and were excellent.  Friends of DS Rob's played Sir Evelyn Oakleigh and Elisha J. Whitney; they did well, too.  Rob encountered Reno in the lobby afterward and said, "Up close, she was...imposing."

And now, the Food Report from Day 1 Williamstown.

-Remember, it's all about the food!

I had lunch - which was basically a very late breakfast - at Helen's Place.  Helen's is basically a deli-type establishment.  I got their Buffalo Chicken Wrap - very tasty.  I also picked up two deviled eggs - which were good too, although, they could use a more judicious hand with the Dijon mustard - or the Colman's Mustard Powder - the filling had a bit of an unexpected kick to it.  Whew!

Dessert - yes - I had dessert, but of course - came courtesy of the Tunnel Country Cafe - I think that's what it's called.  It's a coffee shop that also sells pastries and other baked goods.  I got one of their "French Macaroons".  Basically, it was two Chocolate-Hazelnut Meringue cookies with a generous dollop of Chocolate Ganache holding them together.  A very haute cuisine Oreo.  Very good.

I shall have to investigate the rest of the pastry case later on.  -And they also have hand-dipped chocolates too!

...OH!

My sweet tooth kicked in big time once I got here...  So...

I actually ended up picking up a Chocolate Toffee Cookie and a Raspberry-Filled Butter Cookie at Helen's.  Both were very good - the raspberry cookie seemed made with fresh raspberries too.

...And then I headed across the street to Lickety Split for some ice cream.  I got a scoop of Cinema Bun (???) in a sugar cone.  It's basically a cinnamon bun flavored ice cream with pecans.  Very good too.

....And for dinner, we all headed over to the Water Mill Inn - or something like that.  Basically a pub/tavern.  I got the fried clams - I just had to since I'm in Massachusetts right now.  Very good, and surprisingly light too!

What Jose didn't mention was when he came by yesterday, some person in our building has apparently given up their Broadway dreams and had put out in the lobby a ton of acting books and Jose found a folder chock full o' songs, so we had him do a profile on the person using only their folder full of audition songs.

I was reminded (through a thorough discussion of the years the movies came out and other things that were going on in my then-young life) at dinner tonight that the movie poster that freaked me out in Far Rockaway when I was a pre-teen must in fact have been the poster for BEN, not the poster for WILLARD.  A visit to the imdb for BEN confirmed that that was the poster plastered everywhere I went, near the Far Rockaway station.

Then I first heard the SCHMALTZY song "Ben" (sung to the titular rat) on the Oscars the following spring, since I didn't listen to the radio much at that age.

I should have known that nothing that involved Bruce Davison could have freaked me out too terribly.

Oh, the heartbreak of two wonderful shows coming to an end. SIX FEET UNDER has maybe three or four more episodes to go, so everything that's happening is of major importance, and I will not want to let these characters go.

QUEER AS FOLK, of course, has only one more episode. The writing isn't as good, the characters aren't as well developed, but these folks are still like members of my family, and it is going to be so hard letting them go.

Started on the third and final disc in THE MARY TYLER MOORE set. Many of the shows are still as fresh and funny as ever. In one show, Mary dated a former classmate who had become a concert pianist. Joshua Bryant played the old boy friend, and they had terrific chemistry together. I know the premise of the series was a single gal making her own way in both personal and professional life, but I think of all Mary's boy friends during the seven year run of the series, he was my favorite. I wish they had worked him into the series more.

Good Evening!

Back from the play reading...

WOW!

That was some serious sh*t!!

And I mean that in a good way.  A very good play.

And it was a reading of a play by the book writer for the musical I'm working on, Joshua Scher.  The play is called Marvel.  It focuses on two people: a man and a woman.  The man is in a Spiderman outfit.  The woman is a cop.  And they're sitting on top of the Brooklyn Bridge.

...That's all I want to say about it right now, except that it was funny, thought-provoking and moving.  Sometimes all at once.

What a great way to spend my first evening in Williamstown.

That BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY ad whets my appetite for the Astaire-Rogers movies coming out in two weeks. BARJLEYS is part of the package (though not their best outing).

I guess I like SWING TIME the most followed by TOP HAT. But most of them have one or two numbers that are sterling.

As DR Rodzinksi mentioned, there was a virtual treasure trove of books and copies of music sitting in his building's foyer.  The folder of xeroxes was/is quite varied.  Here's just  sampling: "The Sadder But Wiser Girl" from The Music Man; the audition side for "If I Can't Love Her" from Beauty & The Beast; a song from Hallelujah, Baby! (it was cut from the production I recently played); a couple of Frank Loesser movie songs; "In A Simple Way I Love You" from I'm Getting My Act Together...; and "In His Eyes" from Jekyll & Hyde to name just a few.

I also snagged two Anne Rice books - including "The Vampire Lestat" (which could come in handy as research for a possible future project ;)); and a book on acting in period plays (Shakespeare, Restoration dramas, etc.).  Quite the varied selection of books.

Yes, I've sometimes found treasures rooting through others' castoffs.

OH!

And after a drink at Monkey Bar, we went down the street for some Indian food.  And then I treated DRs Rodzinksi and TPunk to ice cream and gelato at Yummilicious around the corner.  -Well, technically, the Indian restaurant treated all of us to ice cream...

;)

And we've gotten past the all-time low, so that's also one thing not to have to worry about.

As for movie posters...

I'm actually trying to think of any decent movie posters from "my generation".  Any poster "artwork" that does come to mind seems to be a still from the movie, or the lead actor and/or actress head on or in profile.

Hmmm...

I just read that with this weekend's grosses, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS has become Tom Cruise's highest grossing movie ever (figures not adjusted for inflation).

And I meant to add that I still haven't seen it. The theater down the street has finally gotten BATMAN BEGINS so I may be taking that in at some point early this week.

Well...  And this is coming from the child of a dietitian... So, take it for it's worth...

Anything you eat past 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening is basically just calories.  Unless you happen to stay up until the wee hours of the morning, all that food will simply be digesting while you sleep.  Yes, there are still vitamins and minerals involved, but it's basically calories.  *Unlike food you eat during the day which serves more as fuel - you burn it off while you're awake (walking, running, doing chores, etc.).

I sometimes like a bowl of cereal for dessert myself.  However, check that label on the cereal box!  Sometimes a standard serving of cereal can actually have more calories than an actual portion of ice cream.

Additionally, eating anything that "dense" a food before bed can sometimes cause one not to sleep so well since your body is working harder to break it all down than it would if it were something "simpler"- like ice cream.  Or Jell-o.  Or pudding.  *Which is why they serve ice cream, Jell-o, pudding, etc., as the evening snack at hospitals.  It's just enough food to tide one over until the morning, and since they're "simpler" and "less dense", they have less a chance of interrupting one's sleep.

*And one of the easiest ways to lose a few pounds is to simply not eat past 7:00 in the evening.  However, that is usually very hard to do - or not do - especially in the "theatuh" due to the crazy nature of the schedule.  By not eating past 7:00, you force your body to start using your stored energy -a.k.a. fat - while you sleep.  Otherwise, it's just using the calories from the ice cream, cookies, cereal, slice of pizza, etc., you just ate to fuel you until you wake up in the morning.

So...

Have the ice cream!

*Besides, ice cream is truly only good for about three or four days after opening the carton...  -At least that's my reasoning.

;)

...OH!... And the campus of Williams College is simply beautiful.  And it basically comprises the "downtown" of Williamstown, MA.

Spring Street is the main street here - post office, restaurants, shops, etc.  And it's only a five minute walk from my dorm.  And, surprisingly, there's supposedly decent Thai and Indian restaurants.

And it's raining here tonight.  There was quite a downpour during the play reading earlier, and it's still drizzling and misty outside right now.  But it's a nice drizzle and mist.  And it's very cool too.  Should be a good night for sleeping.

*And best of all, I don't have rehearsal until 3:00 tomorrow afternoon!  However, I'll most likely be at a piano for a few hours in the morning getting more notes under my fingers and melodies in my head.

Hmm...

Just saw this on Playbill.com...

How I Got to Broadway: The Untold Story of the Battles, Wins & Losses On Stage & Off of Mark Schoenfeld (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/94292.html)

Is this something I really want to see?

And who's going to produce it?  And take another possible loss?

Just checked that email Elmore. Will have to discuss, but that sounds cool.

Out at Don't Tell Mama's, it was quite a fun night. After playing coy, TPunk got up and sang "Crazy". And the accompanist was like, "You wanna do 'Crazy'?" Like maybe he thought it was out of her league, but she knocked it out of the park, and he saluted her, and we were all proud of her.

There were a couple other talented folks singing. One lady did "50 Percent" which was nice because I needed to erase the memory of Suzanne Somers' from a week ago. And there was one drunk girl who was singing along too loud to other people's songs, I mean literally stepping all over one waitress's singing of "Adelaide's Lament."

The Scarlett Street fellas gave us a ride all the way home, and that was cool since we live at the top of Manhattan.

Ah... Listening to some Bach - The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1.  Andras Schiff... Great recordings.

-Although, sometimes the clarity of his voicings in the fugues is actually a little clear... My mind will start picking up on all the details... And just start to overload with a sense of awe, more or less.

However, it's still some quite beautiful playing.

I actually went ahead an unpacked my luggage.  I figure since I'm here for three weeks, I might as well get comfortable.

I think the only "bad thing" about the living arrangements here, is that for every six dorm rooms, there is one bathroom.  Each bathroom has one stall and one(!) shower.  I asked around earlier, and, apparently, it's first come-first showered.  We'll see how things operate come morning.

-Oh, and the floors are co-ed - at least right now they are, so... Hmm...
