Title: AHA

Well, you've read the notes, therefore you are in the know and with it and happening, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've just realized it's August and instead of their usual "Moo" they all said, "Aha."

My first thoughts:
Moricone's score for "The Mission"
Sir Ian McK for "Gods and Monsters".

Any song other than the Eminem "song". (I would liked to have seen Paul Simon's song from "The Wild Thornberries" win. The song from "The Color Purple" should also have won in it's year.

I was very remiss, oh, yes, I was very remiss in my thoughts on Last Train From Gun Hill - I did not mention the absolutely wonderful and luminous performance of Miss Carolyn Jones.

All right - I'm going to share the first blurb for Rewind.  I have thought long and hard and also hard and long about how to deal with the book on this here site.  I think that what will be best is to not discuss the plot of the book at all - that way, it's a surprise for everyone who reads it.  I know you'll all understand this completely, starting with this very blurb.  I'm really proud of this blurb - feel free to say you like it, etc. without going into further detail at this time.  Here is the blurb:

"Bruce Kimmel's Rewind is a fascinating work of fiction, an alternately
dark, witty and chilling account of the trouble an honorable man can get
into in the music business, enhanced by intriguing 'insider' details that
spring from the author's apparently hard-earned experience as a record
producer. Good nasty, devious fun."  Dick Lochte, author of Sleeping Dog, Blue Bayou, The Neon Smile.

DR MATTH mentioned yesterday;
Quote
If I had any objection with the book at all, it was Hitchcock's non-confrontational demeanor with Truffaut. When Hitch gauges that Truffaut didn't like a particular film (can't remember the ones now; possibly THE PARADINE CASE or TORN CURTAIN) rather than defend his work or the films or explain what went wrong, he just passes over them quickly.
I don't think he was intimidated by Truffaut as much as that he simply didn't like to argue or makes scenes.

I, too, felt that Hitchcock did that kind of demeanor with Truffaut in it and I think, Hitchcock, with the presence of great director, received sincerely and modestly YOUNG Truffaut’s remarks to his films.

Good morning, all! This is my GOLDEN APPLE deadline week, so I'll be preoccupied with it and most likely boring you all with its minutiae.  I've got to tackle Act Two of the Flute book this morning and schelp the harp part into Tams-Witmark to check some questions with the full score and string parts.

TOD:
  1.  Lynne Thigpen losing the Tony to Lauren Bacall.
  2.  Larry Hochman losing this year's Tony to LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
  3.  Ian McKellan losing the Academy Award for GODS & MONSTERS

Here I am, all alone. I posted not a whit this past weekend. I had domestic chores and a play to see. I also went to bed early on Saturday since Sunday I needed to go shopping. Anthony was up in the Catskills for a special one day performance of a show. He went in spite of his ankle. It's still bothering him. He's thinking he might go back to the doctor. Perhaps an x-ray is in order to see if there is any other damage.

As much as I enjoyed (and enjoy) Cherry Jones and her wonderful work on stage, I do think Kathleen Turner was robbed this year. She deserved a Tony (IMHO) for Virginia Woolf. I may come up with more later.

I think that Julie Andrews should have received an oscar nomination for Duet For One. Jane Fonda received one for The Morining After which was not that deserving. Andrews gave her best performance ever.

Ghandi sweeping the Oscars that year. What were they thinking!

As much as I liked Ain't Misbehavin, I thought On the Twentieth Century more and it should have won Best Musical. (It did win for Best Score and Best Book)

Angela Lansbury should have won at least one Emmy by now and maybe she will finally win it this year.

BK:
Regarding the length problem of the cd. If you can't place the song opposites on the cd perhaps you can release the cd The Music of Bruce Kimmel. Drop the Stages and put the new one.

You could also add some other new songs you have written since then as well.

I spy our resident MTV star!  Perhaps now we will find out whether the father/son duo will take the stage together.

I'm working a much earlier shift today than I'm used to, hence I went to bed early last night, and here I am very early in the morning.  It's gray, cool, and rainy outside right now.  A far cry from the gorgeous weather we've been having...ah well, it's supposed to return by the end of the week.

I thought the Cheyenne kid from "All Shook Up" deserved at least a nomination. If you think of what a Tony means, a star-making sort of performance that is universally enjoyed by those who see it, carries a show, shows good comic timing and skill, has people leaving the theatre talking about him, that was deserving of a nomination.

Oscar-wise, Warren Oates, TWO-LANE BLACKTOP.

There are so many Oscar and Tony mistakes that I will be naming my biggest peeves all throughout today.

First, for movies, Judy Garland should have won Best Actress for A STAR IS BORN over Grace Kelly in THE COUNTRY GIRL. Kelly's role was really a supporting one, and her performance is adequate, nothing more.

I guess I can understand how Julie Andrews lost her three Tony nominations to Judy Holliday, Elizabeth Seal, and Donna Murphy (which she undoubtedly would have won had she not denied her nomination), but I can't understand why the League and Wing haven't voted her a special Tony. Those great theater legends like Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, and Bette Midler have all been voted special Tonys. Julie should have one, too.

And how outrageous that CAMELOT was denied a Best Musical nomination. In 1961, only three shows were nominated (DO RE MI, IRMA LA DOUCE, and the winner BYE BYE BIRDIE), but there was a space available for CAMELOT to get a nomination. It outran all three of the nominees, of course.

I slept rather well considering I don't have the most comfortable mattress in the world.  But it's a dorm room, so what can ya' do?

I need to head in a little while and run by the admin office to finish up some paperwork, and then get something to eat somewhere, and get a little practice in before rehearsal at 3:00.  We're having a read-thru/sing-thru at 6:00, so I'm guessing it would be good for me to learn a few more notes before then.

And in regards to the Tony Awards...

Tom Sawyer getting a nomination for Best Set Design?!?  When most of the set was one big rock?!?!?

And then there's the whole La Cage aux Folles winning over Sunday in the Park with George brou-ha-ha.  I still think Sunday should have grabbed that one.

And that's all I can think of right now...

Time to get my day in full gear.

Very weird thing just happened.  The b.f. came back from the gym having been listening to 1980's music on his ipod saying that he found a great 1980's drum beat that he really flipped over.  And (here it comes, you'll never believe it) he said "It's in a song called 'Take on Me' - have you heard the song?"

The group that recorded the song was of course A-HA.  Eerie coincidence, that.

I will.

No way should John Wayne ever have "won" an Oscar, much less for "True Grit"...especially considering the performances given that year by Peter O'Toole, Jon Voigt and Dustin Hoffman.

I also don't think Brando's performance in "The Godfather" was as great as people pretended it was.

Sadly passed by:

O'Toole in "The Ruling Class."  No finer performance ever graced the screen, IMO.

Hiya, Gang.

I'm up at the cabin, having said farewell to both parents between July 13 and 20. Two deaths, two funerals in just under a week.

It's lovely up here, as always. I have missed it so much. Whatta year, I tell yuz.

Anyhow, it looks like lots has happened here on HHW while I've been otherwise occupied. Many congrats. So, anyhow, next Saturday the Village Theater in Issaquah is presenting a reading of David Spencer's The Fabulist, which I saw in a reading in NYC two years ago. Of course I'll attend and see how it has fared... (David Spencer teaches at the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop).

Most of you may know that Spencer's book, The Musical Theatre Writer's Survival Guide, has just come out to pretty nice reviews... I read an advance copy (a perk of being at BMI last year) and recommend it highly to composers, lyricists, book writers, as well as actors. It really is a how-to book on surviving in this industry, full of practical advice, anecdotes - all gleaned from experience, good and bad.

Well, hope we get some rain - some of the moss that covers my forest wonderland is turning brown...

Party on, friends. p

FJL: That's a tough call on Jan Maxwell/Sara Ramirez. I truly believe Jan was *the* saving grace of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, but I feel the same way about Sara's performance in SPAMALOT. I kept waiting for her to come out and liven things up. She had more to do - and girl can SANG! - so I feel like her win was justified.

I, too, believe that Cheyenne Jackson deserved a nomination for ALL SHOOK UP - certainly over Hank Azaria - and ALL SHOOK UP should've received a nom for scenic design as well. And Stephen Oremus deserves an award for his vocal arrangements for that show, too.

I think it's an absolute crime that "The Color Purple" didn't win any Oscars. It's a magnificent film - it deserved some recognition.

And I'll spit nails if "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl" doesn't get a Best Picture nod this year... ;)

July 17 - Drove back to DC since...
July 18 - ...I had to play more auditions in DC.
July 19 - Drove down to Richmond at 6:30am to fetch a paycheck that had gone astray.  Drove back up to DC around 9:00.  Drove back up to NYC, courtesy of my pal, Curt.  Brought up more stuff.
July 20-22 - Auditions, Auditions, Auditions in NYC
July 25 - I bough an air conditioner for my room in NYC - Harlem to be exact, 145th and St. Nicholas.
July 25 (evening) - Got a call from Williamstown...
July 26 - Hemmed and hawed over the over the offer from Williasmstown.
July 27 - I said, "Yes," to Williamstown.
July 28-30 - Relaxed for a bit in the City.  Actually "lived" in my new apartment for a few days.
July 31 - Trained up to Williamstown.  Started rehearsals that afternoon.

...And that brings us to today.

Whew!

I'm up here for three weeks working on a new musical.  It's a workshop situation, and it's part of a new program that Roger Rees instituted this year called leapFROG.  Check out wtfestival.org for particulars.  -And after this week, on official press release about the project I'm working on should be coming out.  -Yeah!  My name in the papers again!  ;)

I disliked The Color Purple during its initial release (mostly due to what I then perceived as a lack of a performance from Whoopi), but it's a film that I've become very fond of over the years.  That ending is a real sob fest.

I totally agree with the people talking about the lack of Tony nominations this year for ALL SHOOK UP.  I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but my gut tells me the nominators just took a stand against the show in principle, as there were so many elements that felt more worthy than the contributions of people that were nominated for other shows.  It's almost like they were being punished for having accepted employment with or in a jukebox musical.  Totally overlooking the show seemed like a statement of some sort.

And while we're at it, while there really was no chance, I felt that Kate Reinders in GOOD VIBRATIONS was a more worthy nominee than at least two of the Leading Actresses in a Musical who were nominated.

It's a small point, but I don't know what production of TOM SAWYER Jose saw, but the set I saw was the only good thing about the show. It had a crazy waterfall, an impressionistic, multi-level cave system, a beautifully-rendered giant tree for the picnic sequence, decent school and courtroom. I definitely remember that set.

I really like is blurb, it makes me want to read the book.

How do you "get" blurbs?  Do you send preview version of the book to people with the request they give you a blurb or does your publisher do that for you?  And how do you decide who to send it to and ask for a blurb from? And whoever made up the work blurb? That's a made up word if I ever heard one!!

Well... Since you asked...

July 16 - Moved to NYC. At least brought the first load of stuff up.

-Yeah!  My name in the papers again!  ;)

So... That's what I've been up to.

;)

Boy,  I leave the country for two weeks (well Canda... that's sorta like leaving the country funny looking money and all)
and you run all over the place.... of course that's your usual  modus operandi   anyway isn't it?

In the case of these two blurbs, I know the authors and I simply asked them to do it, with the only caveat being that they DON'T do it if they don't like the book.  Happily, they both really liked it, hence the blurbs.

Tomovoz is now the second order I've found that didn't get printed out.  I'm going to now have to cross reference every order with the paypal page.  Very very disturbing.

Peter O'Toole & Richard Burton are probably the two most screwed actors when it comes to Oscar.

Cliff Robertson's Oscar I've always found a bad choice...especially when almost everyone else in the category that year would have been a better choice...O'Toole for Lion In Winter; Alan Arkin for The Heart is the the Lonely Hunter; Alan Bates for The Fixer; Ron Moody for Oliver.

I would have preferred Kirk Douglas for Lust for Life over Yul Brynner in The King and I.  I thought The Grifters should have won a couple for acting roles.  And , no, Titanic shouldn't have come close to beating out LA Confidential.  An utterly absurd choice!

I think the sweep for THE PRODUCERS at the Tonys was not entirely unearned, but I thought the result of Cady Huffman winning over Kathleen Freeman (and Polly Bergen and Mary Testa for that matter) almost qualifies as tragic.  OK, I'm being a little bit of a drama queen about it, and I DO love Cady Huffman as a performer, but Kathleen Freeman should have gotten it both for her performance and her legacy.  Obviously, it's always a matter of being in the right show at the right time, but I thought Freeman was giving one of those once-in-a-lifetime performances in FULL MONTY, or at least was at the performance I saw.

FJL, I have to agree with you.  I saw the original cast of The Producers and thoroughly enjoyed the show and the performances.  Cady Huffman was great in the role, but I feel that any number of actresses could have done the same.  Kathleen Freeman or Polly Bergen would have been my choices that year.  Bergen was the best thing in that revival of Follies.

read "The Other Bolyen Girl" by Philipa Gregory historical fiction ( I recommend it)

read "Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince" (as did the Vixter... the jury is mixed on this ...the Vixter loved it right up until the unfortunate demise of a beloved person... I am not sure HOW I feel about this one... I think I need a reread)

Read "Kate Remembered" by Scott Berg it should have been titled "Look how many important people I know"

read 'American Gods" by Neil Gaiman a very odd, interesting book that I don't even know how to catergorize its fiction/fantasy/sciencefiction but very readable... I also enjoyed his book "Neverwhere" which I read last year

Here is blurb number two - I think dear reader Pogue will be most amused at the last line:

“Watch out, cruel world. Bruce is on the loose, and this time he's out for blood. That Marcel Proust of the 1950s, our Jean Shepard of the Twenty-First Century, now looks back in hilarious anger to just yesterday, when all our troubles seemed not far away. With the subterfuge of a Kasparov and the pungency of a Kerouac, show biz sleuth Kimmel takes us down a mysterious road, one he knows so well that he painted the double line down the middle. Once again, Bruce Kimmel proves to be a master of fiendish mystery as well as fondest memory. Be entertained. Be very entertained.”

I saw THE PRODUCERS when Matthew and Nathan made their triumphal return. I didn't see what the big deal was. Nothing about the show really bowled me over - except maybe "Springtime for Hitler" which I could already watch at home on film - so I was a little confused as to why it won everything.

I feel like Rachel York was egregiously overlooked in VICTOR/VICTORIA. Sure, she was apeing Leslie Ann Warren, but DAMN! she was funny!

And, of course, DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES sadly didn't take home any awards or nominations. What a travesty. ;)

I agree about John Wayne. Best Actor - never. I could have lived with a special award for a lifetime spent in the movies, but I think O'Toole deserved it that year for GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS. Over the years, I've come to find Hoffman and Voight's work in MIDNIGHT COWBOY a little too actory for my taste. They both earned Oscars for much better work later in their careers.

I really had no problem with any of the awards won by THE PRODUCERS except Cady Huffman's. I feel exactly the same; she was fine, but it was a role any number of actresses could have done just as well. She didn't bring anything special to it. Kathleen Freeman's was a one-of-a-kind performance. Irreplaceable.

I share the Gaiman books with the Mr. (well actually they're HIS I kinda take them when he puts them down which REALLY annoys him)

I enjoyed the writing and the pages did turn pretty fast... (of course we were trapped on various segments a 12 hour flight) but the Vixter started reading  the book at  6 AM  7/16 and was done with it by noon on Sunday the 17th  and read the first few chapters when she chanced to put the book down  (that REALLY annoys her)  and then I started reading it in earnest on Monday and had it done pretty much by Tuesday morning

I am just not sure I liked the turns the book was taking although I am very intrigued by the "Snape chapters" in the beginning and have a theory that he has made more than one of those "vows" if you get my drift.....

Well, the tired old canard is out again.  John Wayne's no actor.  I beg to disagree.  While he wouldn't have been my choice in '69, his performance in True Grit is fine!  and he probably deserved a nod for either The Quiet Man or The Searchers.  Give him the right material and the right director and could give a great nuanced performance.

I totally forgot that Rachel York in V/V was one of the egregiously overlooked.  I'm in such total denial over her non-nomination that I was startled by its being mentioned.  That was a fabulous performance, which I saw four times, having had some strange need to see all of the Victorias.

York amazed me in three roles lately, as Mother in RAGTIME recently at Paper Mill, as Ruth in DESSA ROSE at Lincoln Center, and as the lead in SUMMER OF '42 in the benefit concert at (appropriately) the York.  Seeing her do those three roles within a matter of  a month or so was (dare I say it since the word is overused) a revelation.

Speaking of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and Howard McGillin, I was delighted when it won Best Musical but very disappointed when Patti Cohenour lost the featured actress Tony that year to Bebe Neuwirth in SWEET CHARITY. Bebe's wonderful, but Nikki is hardly a fantastic role in comparison to Rosa Budd in DROOD.

Now, to be fair, I didn't see that SWEET CHARITY revival (I had seen the original as a teen), but I knew the character and unless Bebe did something earthshaking with the part, I can't believe Patti's rapturous singing and delightful acting lost to her. Of course, Jana Schneider was also up from DROOD and maybe votes for a DROOD actress were split allowing Bebe to win.

Rented Lips and Orgazmo - two films that derived their existence from The First Nudie Musical (with Orgazmo ripping off one of Nudie's most famous lines wholesale), neither one of which had the good taste to at least acknowledge the "homage."

Of course, I saw VAMPIRES five time...but for totally different reasons! ;)

"True Grit" was neither Wayne's best nor the best acting of the year.

Thank you for checking BK. I still have "Bollywood" Cds to listen to if desperate and some wonderful Mahatten Transfers. I'll make it through the wait.

Tomovoz: Jo Loesser and her legal person put the kibosh on the Where's Charley recording.  She's notorious for this sort of thing - after raving about the production, and, at first, sort of being okay with the recording, she just did an about face and that was that.  Really foolish, if you ask me.  Your order has shipped, Tom.

SPOILER sort of BB6

I watched for a little while last night. I really feel bad for Kaysar. He's going and he knows it and seems so depressed. He's not attacking anyone, just sleeping a lot and trying to make sure people will be his friend when he's gone.

I had a strange thing happen tonight. The parking ramp wouldn't let me out! They've recently gone without humans. I used my pass and the arm wouldn't go up. Of course it did for everyone else and there I was stuck behind the arm.....hmmmm....I suppressed my urge to crash though it and paid for a lost ticket. read "Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince" (as did the Vixter... the jury is mixed on this ...the Vixter loved it right up until the unfortunate demise of a beloved person... I am not sure HOW I feel about this one... I think I need a reread)

Oooo...very nice.  I think that this speaks volumes. ;)

Two amazing parcels from HHW folks arrived today! A two-CD collection of Brill Building hits and rarities from Tomovoz, which I am enjoying as I type.

AND...

The New Christy Mintrels "Wandering Minstrels" LP from DR George, which completes my set of NCM Lps from their golden era. That one had eluded me for many years.

Thanks fellas! Very kind and generous. What a great site this is.

Glad you like it!

Also, if it wasn't part of the Brill collection, did you know that Janis Siegel recorded a CD made up of songs that were written in the Brill Building?  It's called I Wish You Love (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005Y4PT/qid=1122942719/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-7701208-5864855?v=glance&s=music&n=507846).  It's a wonderful CD by a wonderful performer. ;D

I think Fiddler announced their closing date since they're at the point where they haven't found anyone bankable to replace Harvey.  -And, I'm guessing he'll be playing Tevye until closing at this point.  This way, group sales sales can be coordinated and adjusted if necessary.  -And it's a big group sales show.

Now, as for Movin' Out...  I'm suspecting it will close mid-September.  And, unfortunately, the buzz is that All Shook Up may close at that time if their advance sales do not pick up.

*I talked to a friend of mine who was in the city over the weekend.  He and a couple of his friends actually managed to snag second row seats in the mezzanine at TKTS for All Shook Up on Saturday.  Hmm...  We shall see...

DR PennyO and Ginny, I am also very saddened to hear of your losses.  Plural in both cases.  I just want to extend my very heart felt condolences to you both.

If the loss of one parent leaves a void, then losing both must be an aching gap.

The loss of two co-workers is also terrible.  No matter if they were people you got along with or not, I’m sure the work environment will not be the same without them.

Be gentle with yourselfs. Time is the great healer but remember, it takes time for it to work.  Just know that we are here for you.

For the show I'm doing up here at Williamstown.

http://www.wtfestival.org

It's called Triangle.  The composer is Curtis Moore - who mentioned the other day that's he's talked with a few times, BK.  The lyricist is Tom Mizer.  The book writer is Joshua Scher.  For a brief description of the show, and a sound clip of one of the songs, check out:

http://www.trickybox.com

And our director is Carlos (I have yet to get his last name).  He's one of the Directing Fellows this season, and he actually just won one of those Princess Grace Awards too.

All good people.

I usually read at night until I get drowsy, put the book down and go right to sleep.  Last night I didn’t get drowsy and was completely engrossed in my book (ON FALCON’S WINGS) and read until there wasn’t anymore to read.  By then it was almost 4:30.  6:00 came way too early this morning.  I dosed on and off until 6:30 when Keith woke me up.

Right now I'm struggling to stay awake.

Has there been any follow-up stories regarding Jana Schneider and her condition?

You'll have to clue me in, DR Dan. I don't know what you're referring to.

I enjoyed the Lauren Bacall interview with Robert Osborne. In print interviews, she has come across as a tough cookie, a really demanding and cantankerous woman, but the lady being interviewed tonight was gracious, unassuming, grateful for her success, and rather modest. I thought. Was she giving a performance for TV? I was really surprised!

No, I'd rather see a De Niro movie than a Wayne movie, and I'd rather see a Pacino movie than either one of them (since DR Ron mentioned Pacino).

That doesn't meant there aren't Wayne movies that I like a lot. For starters, RED RIVER.

And, of course, we've talked before about unworthy Best Songs. I antagonized some DRs here the last time I dumped on "Sweet Leilani," but I say again that I think "They Can't Take That Away from Me" should have gotten the Gershwins an Oscar instead.

Has anyone been watching Anthony Bourdain's new show on the Travel Channel, No Reservations?  We watched the Finland episode tonight; it was filled with his usual laid-back but quirky cynicism.  Some of it was laugh-out-loud stuff, but Bourdain is an acquired taste, not unlike his reaction to fermented shark meat.

On that Bacall interview, they showed a clip of Bacall doing "Welcome to the Theater" from the Tony Awards. She did look marvelous, and you could tell she was thrilled to be there, thrilled to be nominated, and she affirmed during the interview that to be a respected stage actress was always her dream. She was supposed to be singing into a floor mike but she kept moving out of the range of the mic and her voice would raise or lower in volume as she did so.

When I first met Bacall and had dinner with her, I found her completely charming and gracious, and when we recorded her she was down-to-earth, took suggestions, and was wonderful to work with.

I saw Julie Andrews and Rachel York and I was flabbergasted the York wasn't nominated.  She was wonderful.

I think Rachel York was robbed! She should have been nominated.

I think she she had the best line in the show.

After finding out that Victor is a woman, and Squash is gay. She's had enough.

What's the matter with that? My mother was a nun!

The worse musical I ever saw that won the Tony Award was The Will Rogers Follies. I saw it on tour with the two leads at the Jackie Gleason Theater. I wanted to leave at intermission, but I thought my parents were enjoying it. Turns out they thought I was enjoying and they would have left at intermission as well.

And Jose, to tie separate postings together, you can ask Tom Mizer and Curtis Moore about the time they both simultaneously danced with Lauren Bacall at Amanda Green's wedding.  I wasn't there, but we heard about it.  Reportedly they made a Lauren Bacall sandwich.  Wonder if there are pictures of that.

I also watched the next episode in the continually improving and quite interesting Lisa Kudrow series THE COMEBACK. The character she's playing showed some dynamic change this week after weeks of getting run over, backstabbed, and humiliated on camera.

I really am starting to love the canny mix of humor and pathos in the show now. I hope HBO will give it another season despite less than stellar ratings.

TWO WALTER WILLISON STORIES.

BK: I read an old article that Walter Willison recorded two songs with Richard Rodgers. Do you think that would be interesting  enough to be part of a cd of Richard Rodgers songs. Perhaps some from his last three musicals and his tv musical?

Actually the next thing is actually a trivia question

What TV and Film actor was born with the name Walter Willison but had to change it when he became an actor?

I'll grant you that THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES was not a great musical (I found it glossily entertaining, however), but I certainly preferred it to MISS SAIGON which I suspect finished ahead of THE SECRET GARDEN in the Tony voting, but that's just a hunch. THE SECRET GARDEN had some dead spots for me (no pun intended), so I was OK with WILL ROGERS winning the prize.

Bacall mentioned during the interview that among her film roles, she most admired her work in DESIGNING WOMAN saying that she enjoyed doing a comedy since she hadn't done one. Later on in the show, however, she mentioned HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE which was made before DESIGNING WOMAN and was, of course, a comedy.

One final Oscar disappointment which I've mentioned here before. THough he was certainly wonderful in A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, Paul Scofield got the Oscar that year that should have gone to Richard Burton in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF.

1991 was an interesting year for Best Musical noms.  Between Will Rogers Follies, Miss Saigon, The Secret Garden and the show so many people forget was also in the running, Once on This Island, I've always found WRF to be the weakest.  On the other hand, der B was so entranced by the SG score that I had to hide the CD from him, just to get him to play something else!

Secret Garden's score is the only one I still listen to. There is nothing memorable about Will Rogers and Miss Saigon was a one listen and that's it.

And don;t forget BK recorded two songs on the Lost In Boston Series

Wasn't Psychodrama on the original LP of Widescreen?

Rupert was very complimentary about the book, and he was delighted that his name appeared in it, and that part of one character bears at least some resemblance to part of his career.

I thought Will Rogers was wonderfully staged.  I thought Keith Carradine was charming.  I thought Tammy Minoff was cute as a button.  But, the book was truly horrid (apologies to Betty and Adolf), and if that yokel in the box seat had stood up one more time and said, "Let's go flying, Will" I would have screamed.

DR Michael Shayne - Psycho Drama was on the original Widescreen. In Rupert's recent box set, Cast of Characters, he says this:

"As for 'Psycho Drama', yes it was a pretty psychotic idea for a fledgling singer-songwriter to allocate ten minutes of his debut LP to an original radio show, but I thought it might better convey that I wanted to make musical movies where the listener provided the cinematography...which was exactly how 'Old Time Radio' worked during it's golden age. "Let Yourself Go" is one of those tunes that I need to sit down at the piano with one day and actually figure out a decent accompaniment to/for it.  The standard sheet music version just does not sound good - at least to my ears.  Melody doubled in the left, chords in the right hand - at least in the verse and bridge.  Just not supportive for a singer.

...And that's that.

Speaking of Picayune, I actually worked at a firm (Gosh, is it really 20 years ago now?) where one of the bosses was named Herb Huene, and he was indeed very exacting and annoying about senseless detail, and some of his employees did call him "Picky Huene."

Probably meaningless, but that's the only Picayune story I have.  :)
