Title: 77 SUNSET STRIP (SNAP, SNAP)
Post by: bk on August 05, 2005, 12:06:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes (snap, snap), you know the metaphysical aspects of the notes (snap, snap), and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're at 77 Sunset Strip (snap, snap) right now, having supper next door at Dino's Lodge.

And the word of the day is: FOLIAGE!

Fun fact: In the Dragnet episode I just finished was a scene with an actor playing a cop - had about three lines.  The actor was Kent McWhirter according to the end credits.  Of course, Kent McWhirter would, just a little while later, change his name to Kent McCord and would star as an officer on Adam 12.

I think I shall listen to Mr Don Ralke's version of "77 Sunset Strip" and the Cha Cha version too. Then I shall follow that with Mr Roger Smith's album and then perhaps Mr Ed Byrne's tracks.
For dessert - Miss Connie Stevens.
Ah! Warner Bros Records.

And to link my posts:  Almost one hit wonder group "The Cascades second single was "The Last Leaf" - also on the Warner Bros label.

HI all. I heard from JMK tonight but didn't get the call from Jane. I'll call her cell tomorrow. I'm looking forward to the get together and I'll have my camera too.

I am very pleased with the BB6 twist and have already voted for Kaysar 4 times via both web and text.   I will have to keep voting for him.  I really want to see him back in the house.

I need to get some sleep. I had a lovely time at the Chinese Garden followed by a lovely time at the Blue Hour with many oysters and scallops, followed by a basil gimlet and coconut ice cream at the  Saucebox.  It was a lovely evening, but now I must sleep.

Cillaliz, I hope to see you tomorrow (today, actually)!  I was being wishywashy about going or not (WHAT WAS I THINKING?? ;)) and would like to meet you and see Jeff again (it's only been a month) and Jane (we met in person last year).  I wasn't able to get my sister's boyfriend's digital camera (it takes great pictures) but I might be able to get my sister's camera.  It takes very good pictures, too, but I don't know how to use it as well as the other camera.  It should be okay, though.

Now I must go to sleep.  Goodnight all!

Finished another Dragnet episode - this one, for nostalgia freaks, was the motherlode.  Main scene shot in the Bank of America at Universal City.  Then, a long driving sequence down Riverside Blvd, first in Burbank, then heading towards Laurel Canyon.  There was Colfax as it used to be in 1967.  Then the best - they turn right on Laurel and there is Gelson's (with only half the parking lot - the other half was a Shell station.  There was the corner where there is a strip mall, a Starbuck's and my mail place, which was then Riverside Market.  There was Jack in the Box, looking exactly the same.  Then they go further north and end up on my old street, St. Clair (although way north of where I lived).  Then the rest of the show takes place on a "freeway off ramp where one doesn't exist - near Victory and Laurel Canyon - they used a little alley in back of the JC Penny's and made it look like an onramp.  What fun!!!

DR JMK mentioned yesterday;
Quote
Announcing my return and beating TCB to the punch in one post (no mean feat), may I ask:  could this site be any more gay?
And DR STUART mentioned;
Quote
For some reason, I had been holding my tongue on DR Hisaka's comment. It seemed like just a way-too-easy target.
We love you, DR Hisaka, but the word "gay" has far too many definitions around these here parts.  Though just the other day someone (it might have been errant DR/DB Jay) mentioned to me that they wished they could use the word in its original meaning, just has DR Hisaka has.

I’d like to apologize if I made someone unpleasant in using the word. I didn’t mean it that way. Since I’ve seen the word in some previous posts and in dear BK’s notes and I felt I could use it in its original meaning here at HHW, I only used the word.

DRHisaka, I don't think you need to apologize to anyone for any comment.  HHW is a very gay site in any connotation of the word.  You said nothing unpleasant, so do not worry about it.

Early morning clan I am in now.

I'm listening to Cabaretdio right now. It's an off-shoot of Accu-Radio. At the moment Daryl Sherman and Dave McKenna are performing Perdidio

Try as I might, I cannot got RadioAOL to work on my office computer. I can get to the site and click all the right buttons and it says "loading" and then just sits there like so much fish. Oh, well. I have other options.

I don't know if we will watch anything tonight. Anthony is still laying abed to stay off his foot and since it's very hot (80 degrees already at 7:05am) we are staying in the bedroom which is the only air-conditioned room in our small abode. There is no television in the bedroom although if we got really inventive, we could watch something on the computer but the monitor is too far away. Oh, well. We have our books and our CDs and we are happy. I'll be in the office tomorrow from now untill October 22nd (not consecutively, just on Saturdays) but the heat is supposed to break so it should be better. I need to go to K-Mart and look for a new wastebasket after work tomorrow. I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond yesterday but I refuse to pay $40.00 for a plastic wastebasket. I then went across the street to the Container Store and ran into the same problem. They have "trendy" trash containers for $40 and $60 dollars but little in between. They did have a $12.99 wastebasket but it was the size of a small child, far too big for where we put it. Who knew that buying a wastebasket would be such a chore. If I can't find anything at K-Mart I may take the PATH train out to Jersey City and go to the Target. There is no Target near me. I know there are locations in Brooklyn and Queens but it's actually closer to take the PATH Train from the corner and go two stops with a 3 minute walk.

So that's my weekend.

Hello, Mr. Moore. According to the light, you're still on-line with me.

Later, gaters.

I'm off to work at what SHOULD be our last day of homelessness. That is, if Charlie shows up to finish his work. If not, I don't know what we'll do come Sunday. Personally, I think we should call in someone else to finish the job, but the only one who can fire Charlie is the contractor, who is on vacation. Rant over.

Hi Hisaka, ICU!   :)

DR Danise, years ago, they announced in the paper that the shuttle was going to cross directly over the Philadelphia area.  I was living in Collingswood, NJ at the time (very close to Philly), so I went out at night to try to spot it.  I followed a couple of objects (satellites, I guess) with my binoculars, but I didn't see anything that I thought was so special.  Suddenly, something big crossed my field of vision through the binoculars.  Then I spotted it--the outline was unmistakable.  It looked like an airplane, only much higher up and moving fast.  As it moved towards the horizon, I could see the engines burning blue behind it.  TO me, it was an amazing sight that I've never forgotten.

Hurt my arm a bit, so I'm typing a little less, but in my CD player:

Musical of Musicals - cast album
Epiphany, The Best of Chaka Khan
Noel Coward's After the Ball - cast album
Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
Wicked - cast album

Just recently took the Avenue Q cast album out of the CD player, that one was in rotation for a long time.  Also was hooked on Celine Dion's All the Way - A Decade in Song and Josh Groban's debut album for a long while, and those just came out of the CD palyer the other day, but please don't hate me for that.

As to foliage, I was very disappointed that THE GREEN HEART, the musical version of A NEW LEAF (or at least based on the source material for A NEW LEAF) didn't do better.

I'm liking being a Junior Member rather than a Newbie.  It's been years since anyone called me a Junior anything.

...And we're due for some storms this afternoon too.  But, it's also supposed to cool down a bit starting this weekend - well, at least from the upper 80s to the lower 80s.  But the evening temps are forecasted to be in the upper 50s and lower 60s, so...

*I will say, the one thing I was NOT expecting up here at Williamstown, was the lack of air conditioning in most of the public spaces.  Yes, the two mainstage complexes have a/c, but the dorms don't (I guess since it never gets that hot during the  school year...), the rehearsal spaces don't, and some of the performances don't either.  Very interesting.  Not complaining, just pointing it out.

...However, I'm guessing the "stars" may have better accomodations.  However, I do believe some of the cast of Bus Stop is staying in the dorms.  -Oh, and one of those stars happens to be Logan Marshall-Green who was on "The O.C." for a season and a bit.  I have a feeling that if Williamstown was closer to a major city, he'd be having tons of admirers waiting for him in the Quad each day.

It's a banner day for Ms. Cyndi Lauper here on HHW! I may have to go home and listen to her as well.

I passed out last night. Not literally 'passed out,' but more like CONKED out. I think I fell asleep around 8pm and woke up at 11:30. Of course, I hadn't eaten any dinner, hadn't taken a shower, didn't post at HHW. My schedule was all out of whack. I finally got back to bed at 2:00 (after Oprah) and fell asleep around 5:30. Oy!

Btw, you cracked me up when you said "gotta go vote for kaysar again". I am just as pathetic since i have been voting all morning on and off as well. :)

Hisaka, I make little joke yesterday (probably miniscule, in fact).  :)

I remember that LSD episode of Dragnet--doesn't the guy paint his face green and yellow?  Not to divulge too much of my sordid past, but I may have wandered in the desert with acolytes of the dear departed Timothy Leary when I lived in San Francisco back in the late 70s.  Does anyone remember Leary's Joyful Wisdom Hour that used to be syndicated on radio back in the day?  Tim came to Portland and did an hilarious stand-up routine with a slideshow.  I remember him showing this series of aphids and crickets, ending with a photo of the Pope in his Pope-hat.  It was quite funny.

CD:  Sacred Spirit, which I picked up in Yellowstone.  Nice trance-synth reworkings of Native American chants.  Recommended.

DVD:  Peter Wimsey & Harriet Vane.  The actress playing Harriet is evidently Christopher Lee's niece.

I must say to DR Hisaka that no one at Haines His Way could possibly EVER be unpleasant over the use of the word "gay."

There are, however, some televangelists who become decidedly unpleasant any time they hear the word.

Re: "BB6" twist.  There was mention at the Canoe site that Kaysar is the only evicted houseguest who did not see a farewell message from one of his buddies in the house.  That may (or may not) portend CBS' certainty that it is he who will return.

I think it's very amusing watching the live feeds and hearing James keep plugging for it to be Michael...because, he says, "I owe him an apology."

James is scared of Kaysar because he knows Kaysar is "onto him."

April and Jenn were in the HOH room last night.  April ranted and raged and drooled bile trying to convince Howie he had to target James and Sarah.  She took her usual time in making the same point again and again, each go-round layering same point with increased amounts of two-faced self-righteous fury.  April works herself into a state.  I'm afraid she may drop dead from a stroke if she stays in the house much longer.

All this talk of "77 Sunset Strip" (Snap! Snap!) reminds me of another infectious song that derived from the show.  It was inspired by a character played by Ed Byrnes, a parking attendant, who obsessed over his hair.  He and Connie Stevens (who was "Cricket" in "Hawaiian Eye" around that time, wrote the song):

Kookie, Kookie, (Lend Me Your Comb)
Sung by Edward Byrnes & Connie Stevens

Connie: Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb.
Kookie, Kookie?
Edward:  Well now, let's take it from the top & grab some wheels & on the way we'll talk about some cuckoo deals.
Connie:: But Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb.
Kookie, Kookie?
Edward: Now you're on the way, miss, & I'm readin' you just fine. Don't cut out of here till we get on Cloud 9.
Connie: But Kookie?
Edward:  I've got smog in my noggin ever since you made the scene
Connie: You're the utmost!
Edward:   If you ever tool me out...dead, I'm the saddest, like a brain
Connie: The very utmost. Kookie, lend me your comb. Kookie,  Kookie?
Edward:   Man, I got my bruise lighters in my flapsy-colored pen You're gonna send me to that planet called... you know it, baby, the end!
(Saxophone Solo)

Connie: Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb.
Kookie, Kookie?
Edward: If you ever cut out, you might be a stray cat
'Cause when I'm flyin' solo, nowhere's we're on that!
Connie: Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb.
Kookie, Kookie?
Edward:  What's with this comb caper, baby? Why do you wanna latch up with my comb?
Connie:  I just want you to stop combing your hair...& kiss me. You're the maximum utmost.
Edward:  Well, I beans & I dreams goin', I'm movin' right now
'Cause that's the kind of scene that I dig...baby, you're the ginchiest!

Re: Big Brother 6 LIVE FEED SPOILERS.

Reading the canoe site, I am unsure who Howie is playing.  He is told April/Maggie that he wants to nominate Sarah/James. And he has told Sarah/James that he wants to nominate April/Maggie or one of their side.

At first I was sure he was fooling April and Maggie.  But he sounds so convincing.  However, it seems rachel wants to keep james and sarah. And i think she is the boss of their team. :)

Btw, it was reported on one of the BB sites that Kaysar is something like 94% popular. So i think the producers know that he is coming back. I think they see how popular he is.

I also wanted to comment on the comment made earlier about the fact that Kaysar was the first evictee not to have a videotape played of his partner's farewell:

I would think that the reason for this is that his actual partner (Michael) is already gone.  Sequestered, apparently, but gone.

And I do wonder what made Ashlea break sequester.

Anyway, TOD:

In my CD player:  several radio shows from the 1980s hosted by members of The Manhattan Transfer that I got from someone who lives in Utah.  I'm listening to them to make booklets for them.  It's not too easy to find names of songs or performers that they don't announce!

In my VCR (at home):  tapes to tape tonight's episodes of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and "Battlestar Galactica."

In my DVD player:  "Maurice" (the 2-disc edition) that I got from eBay, then "Get Bruce" and "Boy Meets Boy:  The First Season" (disc one)...both from Netflix.

But, I'm going to leave for Portland within the hour!  My car is gassed up and I'm (almost) ready to go.  Just have to finish up some things at work...and I have my sister's camera, so I'll be able to take some spiffy pictures. ;D

I would think that the reason for this is that his actual partner (Michael) is already gone.  Sequestered, apparently, but gone.

Janelle would have been the logical choice to make the farewell comments to Kaysar.  In past BB's, there have always been parting comments for the evicted from a myriad of houseguests.

This season, they've played only one parting comment from the "secret" partners, but they surely had contingencies for solo players whose partners had already left.  Nothing I've read would indicate that parting guests without partners in the house -- a secret twist that is "no longer a secret" -- would have to leave without a farewell.   Since Kaysar and Janelle teamed up after each lost a partner, CBS would have no reason not to give Kaysar a parting comment from Janelle...except for thinking he would be returning.

Of course, that's just my opinion...

I didn't have time to grab my binoculars so all I saw was what looked like a bright star moving  across the sky.  But it was still something to see and know there are seven people there.

I only pray that they come home safely on Monday.    :)

The weather has cooled off a little, thank goodness.  My aunt has arrived to live in the same retirement community as my mom (her sister), and I have a 3-day weekend.  The only downer is that tomorrow morning is the funeral for the beloved co-worker who died Monday.

Today I had to go to the City office to pay for a permit. I saw this piece of art inside the City building. I don't know what it means:

DR Sandra explained it to me. It is the perfect blend of form and formlessness and it makes a real statement about the human condition.

That would be neat but considering it's a million dollar price tag attached, I think I could settle for a picture.   :D

I am sorry about your co worker.

One of the people on the bus told us that they lost someone last night.  He was a work yesterday and all seemed fine, then he was just gone overnight.  You never know.

DR Ginny: Your opinion on the Carly Simon would be beneficial.  I love her "Torch". "Film Noir" and "My Romance" Cds. I'm not sure if the new one has been released in OZ as yet.

Well, I did get to see one once, quite unexpectedly, one afternoon at Playa Linda off Titusville and Cap Canaveral. It was somewhat close to the ocean, following the shore as it was to land nearby. Hardly anyone on the beach that day; I almost thought I was having an allucination!

DR Tomovoz - I like the new CD very much.  I find it quite satisfying that someone who's about my age can still do what made her famous 30+ years ago.  Until reading the insert, I'd forgotten about My Romance, which I still have on cassette.  The other 2 I'd not heard of, but will now try to find.

Thank you DR Ginny. "Torch" is a favourite of another DR (SWW?).  A wonderful version of Mr Sondheim's "Not A Day Goes By" is on the CD.

Good Evening!

I went ahead and saw The Sugar Syndrome by Lucy Prebble tonight.  It is being presented in the smaller mainstage space, The Nikos Stage.

Quite a play!  It deals with very difficult subjects: the internet, pedophila, anorexia, dysfunctional families.  There are truly some messed up "blokes" in the play.  However, alongside the disturbing and uncomfortable moments, there were some moments of levity, laughter.

I'm not even going to attempt to summarize the play - you can check out wtfestival.org for their blurb about the piece.  But I do have to say that it was amazing to find out that the playwright, Lucy Prebble, was only 23-years old when she wrote this play.  She is only 25 now.  Quite an extraordinary piece of writing.

And all the actors did an amazing job: Betsy Aidem, Patch Darragh (I love that name!), Gaby Hoffmann, and Tim Hopper.  The set was minimal and spare, but very effective.  And the sound design was also well done.

I'm hoping to get into Tom Stoppard's On the Razzle tomorrow afternoon.  The matinees here are at 4:00 - ?? - but at least that will give me a chance to sleep in and also do some sight-seeing in the morning and afternoon.

As for the rest of my evening, I'm going to check out another director's project in a few.  It's a piece by Vaclav Havel.

And then from 12:00-4:00am - at least that's what it says on the posters - I will be attending "The Zoo 202".  This is the second one of the season, thus the "202" designation.  All I know is that there is an open bar - both beer and sodas - snacks... and I'm to expect the unexpected.  Hmm...

I am listless.  I used to have a list, but I don't know where it's gone to.  Hence, I am listless.  I'm antsy.  I feel like dancing the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance) but there's no one to dance with.  I could take a walk.  Perhaps that would get me over this listless feeling.

I'm watching the BBC version of The Day of the Triffids.  It's very good, but I'm listless and not in the mood to watch the TV screen right now.

I suppose I'm going to let the cat out of the bag for our next Kritzerland release, which will follow Stages and the Harvey Schmidt CDs.  The new release will be our final release for this year and will come out in late October/early November.  Perhaps in tomorrow's notes.  Perhaps I'll wait until Monday.  All I will say for now is that it's an original cast recording.

Good evening, all. I've just finished watching "The Sound of Music" for the first time in many, many years. What a loverly picture. And it just reaffirms my love for Julie Andrews. :)

IMHO, I think SOUVENIR moving to Broadway is one of the worst ideas ever conceived. Ms. Judy Kaye was fantastic in the piece, but a two-person show about someone that very few people really remember in a theatre as large as the Lyceum is a recipe for disaster. The night I saw the show at the York, there were 15 people in the audience. I think it's a fool-hardy waste of cash to transfer that show to Broadway. And I love Florence Foster Jenkins and Judy Kaye! Bad idea. Bad, bad, bad...

Took a long walk and ended up having fat-free frozen yogurt with peanut butter cup topping.  I ate about half of it then wanted to vomit on the ground.  But, most people coming out of the yogurt place, all these little fashion-deficit young girls with their ass cracks hanging out of their low jeans (with THICK belts - that's the new thing now - THICK ugly belts, usually gold) were coming out with medium and large-sized cups of multi-flavored yogurts - medium is 16oz and large is 20oz.  I had the small and half of that was too damned much.  These kids today, I tell you.  And the conversations one overhears - I know kids of every generation were stupid, but not like I see and hear today.  I believe the kids of today (not ALL kids, just most) have hit a nadir, and I think we can blame it all on too much easy money from mom and dad, too many cell phones, too much Internet, and too much ME ME ME.  I tell you, it's nauseating - nauseating to me at fifty-seven, just as it would have been nauseating to me at eighteen.

Smoke on your pipe and put that in.

Good Evening!

I'm back from "The Zoo"...

By the time I had left there were at least two girls dancing on one of the pole platforms, seven people in the cage, a couple on "make out platform", and at least 150 very happy party-goers...

I was happy too, but my allergies started acting up (all the cigarette smoke, Rosco fog (yes, they even had a fog machine, etc.)... and I'm also tired... and, frankly, I was feeling old - but that's a good thing.

However, I can clearly hear the music and the crowd "noise" from my dorm room, so...

:)

*Of course, NOW they're playing the good music!  -I left when I heard Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" for the second time.  Heck, once is enough for me with that song.

"Introduce Yourself Before Leaving"

"Will you remember his/her name in the morning?"

Actually, according to the program notes, Lucy Prebble started writing this play in reaction to all the tabloid-like headlines in the London newspapers - she's a Brit.  She wanted to put a face to some of those headlines, so to speak.  I believe she accomplished her mission.

-You may continue to charleston.
