Well, you've read the notes, the notes were cornfed and beefy, and now it is time for you to post until the corny cows come home.

Maryland has wonderful sweet white corn this time of year.

It tastes best when grilled on the barbecue, in the husk or in foil.

Newest AOL debacle (what else is new?):  They have had a system failure that causes any Word documents that you attach to e-mail, to be totally screwed up.  Isn't that lovely?  To properly send a Word doc via AOL, you must take a backdoor trip through their mail portal.  Isn't that lovely?  I really don't know why they just don't shoot the beast and put it out of its misery.

TOTD.: I have always admired Dirk Bogarde as actor and writer.  His life is well documented in his autobiographical books but I think it would be interesting to fill in the gaps through the eyes of others.

I, of course, have written three books on the subject I most wanted to write about.  Non-fiction, however - I suppose I'd love to write a nice book about Miss Marjorie Hellen aka Miss Leslie Parrish.

Can't sleep! I am all packed up and I packed light. I didn't even pack any dressy clothes to see shows in though I love to dress up a bit when I go, but they will not fit in my carry-on, and I really don't want to mess with checking luggage...

I may be taking a bit of a nap when I get into the city because I am sure I will be exhausted as I woke up at 9 Sunday morning. It will be a bit tricky on Monday as the money I deposited from my last paycheck won't kick into my account until Tuesday morning because I deposited it on Saturday. I have about $70 dollars to play with and I am going to probably borrow some off my parents to tide me over until it kicks in but I should be good.

I shan't toddle off to the bedroom environment before one.  Otherwise, I'll just lay there like so much fish - I've been trying to just get to the point where I'm SO tired that I just fall asleep.  I usually do this by dancing the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance).

And now - Dino at the piano.

Perhaps I'd like to write a book about Miss Kathryn Kuhlman.

Happy B'Day, Der Brucer!

Being a writer of fiction (albeit mostly cinematic fiction), I am not in the habit of talking about my subject matter for any fictional attempts either films or tomes, I intend to write.  It is the first code of the writer...never talk about your ideas.  Keep 'em to yourself.

BK, one of the reasons WITNESS was such a good movie  was that it had a very classy producer, David Bombyk, who was working with Ed Feldman.  David was the room-mate (though not lover) of my one-time manager, Kip Ohman. Sadly, both Kip and David were early casualties of Aids, both dying of it in the late eighties.

I don't know if you've ever seen the French poster of THE WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE, with Chuck Heston & Gary Cooper grappling, in my diining-room...but it was David's poster. I also have several of his film and design books. He was one of those rare gentlemen in the business and a smart producer with taste.

Good morning, all!  Well, I slept late this morning:  4:50 am.  I will be so glad when this project ends and I can go back to a normal schedule, in which I sleep between 11 pm and 6:30 am.

So, what news on the Rialto?  I have a houseguest this week, and I look forward to it.  I'm almost finished with the GOLDEN APPLE:  horns this morning, trumpets this afternon and tomorrow.  My noble detective and wonderful colleague Tom Murray has departed for Chicago to do ANYONE CAN WHISTLE at the Ravinia Festival; we have a few more pieces on BABES IN TOYLAND to finish, and the edition will be ready.  That's a smooth segue to the TOD:

Like Stella Gibbons' Flora Poste, I'd love to write a novel as good as PERSUASION by Miss Jane Austen, but I don't think I have the skills.  I have been thinking about writing a book on the creation of the 1903 BABES IN TOYLAND and its 102 years in the American media.

I had a lovely nights sleep but I also had some very bad dreams.  I don’t know what put some of that stuff into my mind.

Just heard that Peter Jennings has passed away.  I’m not sure what to say.  It’s sad that he passed away only 4 months but that could be a blessing.  They gave my Dad six months but he lived 3 years with the cancer.  To this day I’m not 100% sure if those extra years were a blessing or a curse to him.  If you could have seen him before and the after.

I’m hoping that all goes well for DR OzDerick.

Gotta run for the bus!

Have a good day all!

And that took us to page 2

I was locked out of my office building this morning. I come in at 6am and when I arrived the front door was locked. Tenants don't have keys for that front door because there is an attendant. Well, the attendant was stuck in one of the elevators. We don't know how long she had been in there but we (by 6am there were about 5 of us waiting for entry) could see from the elevator camera that she was yelling into the emergency microphone trying to get help. It took about a half hour for anyone to respond. Someone finally got in to the building from the back way and came down in another elevator, opened the front door and then proceeded to try and open the stuck elevator. I'm glad we're on the 3rd floor and I can get in and out by the stairs (it's an 18 story office building). She was eventually released. What a way to start your morning!

Jose, the Westway Diner on 42nd and 10th is gone (you may already know that). The entire block has been demolished. Westway has kind of resurfaced now next the the Little Shubert on the corner of 42nd and Dyer Avenue (that little street between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue) in a fancy new building. Diners all over New York are going upscale. It's hard to get diner food at decent prices anymore. A bowl of soup and a cheap sandwich suddenly ends up costing $10. Ouch.

Oh, well. Back to work for me.

Later, gaters.

DR FJL: I don't think either the Admin Assistant or the Physician's Assistant will be visiting HHW.com, even though it is the most popular internet site in the world. And if they find out...well, I guess they should be flattered that someone has a crush on them. Right...?

DR Ben -  The restaurant that was demolished was actually the Kraft Restaurant, which had been at the corner of 42nd & 10th, and has relocated as you described to the space next to the Little Shubert.

The Westway Diner is still alive and well, on 9th Avenue between 43rd & 44th, catering to stars of stage and stage.  We've spotted Charlotte Rae, Kevin Cahoon, Phillip Bosco (who - I kid you not - ordered a glass of milk with chocolate syrup when he was sitting at a table next to us, don't know if they actually used Bosco or if it was U-bet syrup, or why we were eavesdropping on his order).  We've taken to be so lazy in the heat of the summer that we've actually ordered delivery from Westway instead of walking the massive block and a half there, so who knows what celebs we may have missed?  But we love the Westway, used the Kraft only in a pinch even though it was only steps away from home.  (We're at 43rd & 10th.)

Books we're writing or would like to write?  Do books of musicals count?  If so, and I can say this because I've already shown the work in progress to so many people, I'm writing a horror-spoof musical with the tentative title DON'T LET THE DEAD BUGS BITE, about a slew of mysterious deaths of exterminators in a big city which are being traced to people who seem to be reincarnations of bugs that have been juiced.  As a musical, it's meant to be campy fun, but I'm getting feedback that it's more suited to a real horror film with traces of humor.

Title: Re:EARS OF CORN
Post by: Ben on August 08, 2005, 06:29:23 AM
FJL, ahh, yes, you are correct. Since I live downtown, in Chelsea, I get easily confused, like Jason ;-) It is the Kraft Diner that has moved. I thought something was a little off since Westway usually refers to something along the West Side Highway and the Kraft was not that close to the Hudson River and the West Side Highway. I have seen Westway Diner on my bike rides along the West Side but I have never been inside.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I've always wanted to write a book about the singers who dubbed the singing voices for the stars during the golden age of Hollywood musicals. There were quite a few of them, and besides an actual listing identifying who sang what for whom in which film, I thought doing some mini-biographies on the artists letting us see what they looked like and what their careers were about about from ghosting for the stars might have been interesting.

But I never had time to fully research it during my work years, and I'm not sure the market for such a book would make it worth the trouble. Also, many of those ghosts are also gone now, so no interview possibilities there.

And frankly, now that I have time to do such a project, I'm just flat-out lazy about doing anything that takes such concentrated effort as writing a book. Not for me any more, I'm afraid.

Currently reading -- 1776 -- dropped this one in the middle to read Harry Potter, now I've gone back to it.  DR SWW, did you finish it?

As for books:

Non-fiction - I'm still sort of in the process of sketching out an audition handbook for singers.  Yes, there are many books out of the market on the subject, but, frankly, I find them a bit academic - and usually geared toward academic auditions.

I still remember coming up to NYC when I was 21 and playing my first set of New York auditions - just how "informal" it all was.  Yes, there were nerves galore in the hallways, but no one really dress-dressed up.  The people behind the table were rather quite friendly.  And eating Chinese food.  The audition hall itself was nowhere near as glamorous as some of the "textbooks" make them out to be.  Etc., etc., etc.

It's not that I find the existing tomes on the market useless, I just find that a lot of them don't have some of the simple, practical information and instruction that a singer should know before entering an audition room.  There seems to be so much time spent on the process of learning their music for the audition, but not enough time on how to prepare the actual physical sheet music they'll be putting in front of the pianist.  Etc., etc., etc.

We shall see...

...And then there was my first and only visit to The Brooklyn Diner a couple of years ago.  (Wow, that would be about nine years ago by now!)  $10.00 for a bowl of chicken soup?!?!?!?  Thankfully, I was up there with a theatre company, and they were picking up the tab, but that still didn't ease the sticker shock.  I can't imagine what the prices run there now.  Especially at dinner!

Tonight's dinner, after I return from work and der B returns from tending the grandlads, will be roast leg of lamb.  I'm about to get it started, not the actual roasting but the preparation: slivers of garlic and rosemary will be inserted into the flesh, and the whole will be slathered with Dijon mustard.  We'll dine on this with roasted beets, roasted carrots, and roasted baby red potatoes.

The duck will have to wait.   :-\

If we're adding books to musicals, I'd love to write the book for a revue of Dorothy Fields' songs.  Getting through all the styles of her composing partners would be tricky, of course...

For fiction, how about the story of a thief who runs around town assembling the ingredients for an incredible feast?  Yes, it would be a crookbook!

Our third show was the 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, and it was, for me, the best show of the trip. A magnificently imaginative, screamingly funny, and sublimely touching original work (much like AVENUE Q last year).

I really love these shows that are unlike anything you've ever seen before. It really MADE the trip special, and the Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble was wholly deserved! Every member of the cast was unique and wonderful.

I really can't say enough good things about this show. If you're going to be in NYC and have a chance to see this show (standing room at the performance we attended; we had stupendous seats on the second row), GO SEE IT!

I have to say that Friday in NYC was one of the hottest and steamiest seeming to me ever. (This was the first time in all my years of going to NYC that I've been in August.)

We went to the Empire State Building on Friday since none of us had been since we were very young, and when we left there, I walked back up 5th Avenue to the Museum of TV & Radio. I had to stop in at Barnes & Noble to get in out of the heat. I was sopping wet, and I don't usually sweat much. If it rained, I missed it. The moisture I felt was self-induced.

Saturday and Sunday were much more comfortable in comparison.

Back to the Broadway show report for a second: The biggest surprise for me was that I laughed MORE at PUTNAM COUNTY than I did at SPAMALOT, and I did NOT expect that at all.

(And I laughed long and loud at SPAMALOT, so PUTNAM COUNTY is really, really hysterical.)

Thanks, Mike. And your trip will be here before you know it. When I ordered the tickets for the show back in the early spring, I thought August would be a long time coming. Instead, it was here before I knew it.

Of course, we'll want to read all about it when you get back. Will it be your first trip to NYC?

Holy merde, I thought I'd never get here! Our internet has been screwy at the office and, if you can believe it, HHW.com was one of the unlucky victims. Weather.com was, too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DER BRUCER!!

I'm actually considering writing a book. I've been thinking about it for a couple of years. Basically it'd be about my years working at the Met and all of the crazies who come in and check their coats. And the crazies who DON'T check their coats. People have this idea that the Metropolitan Opera House is the height of international cultural sophistication. Once you've seen a naked Asian man running from the fountain in the plaza up to the Grand Tier before he is tackled by security, you start to think otherwise.

And then there was the woman who yelled "F**K YOU!" at me from across the opera house foyer as she ran up the grand staircase in her evening gown and heels. That's class for ya...

DR FJL: I'm not worried that the Physician's Assistant reads this here website. He doesn't seem like a theatrically-minded sort of fellow. And the Admin Assistant doesn't seem like the type who spends great deals of time online, so I think I'm alright. :)

On the subject of voice dubbing - A dear performer named Ludmilla Ilieva (some people may know of her as Do-Re-Milla) did a cabaret show called "Hidden Voices" which was a collection of songs that were dubbed by other people in the movies, along with some stories behind the dubbings.   She's a friend, so I am a little biased  :) , but in quite a few cases, I actually preferred Milla's renditions to the ones that ended up on film.

DR Jason - Yes, that's the Do-Re-Milla.

She's a pistol.  I met her at an Actors Fund benefit concert.  She was dressed to the nines, and stepped on the elevator and said loudly and generally "Are there any chatterati here?"  Lots of chutzpah.  I admire that in a woman. :)

I think I'd also like to write a book about how ignorant some of my customers are.  It just amazes me that people don't read legal documents before signing and returning them. Or that they just return them without signing at all! It's ridiculous.

Here's a sample dialogue based on an actual phone call I received last spring:

Me: Music Theatre. How may I direct your call?
Her: I'd like to order ANNIE.
Me: What state are you calling from?
Her: Oh, I'm not calling from a state. I'm calling from a Junior High School.
Me: Yes, but what STATE are you calling from?
Her: Oh! Haha...sorry. Chicago.

These are the people who are teaching our children. Be afraid!

One of our dear readers is going to get a sparklingly sparkling prize, because he has been doing his sleuthing work - he has located Randi Kallan, and potentially (and very likely) Colleen McLean.  I've left a message for Sammy Williams, but he's on vacation right now, and who knows if he even wants to remember the show.  I left a message for the only number I could find for Ed Morgan, but I have a bad feeling that he may have passed on.  Still having trouble finding a good number on Phil Clark.

Yeah...the guy who was telling me about Rita's keys said that they were most likely Diahann's. I believe Ms. Linda Balgord was the only Norma to sing the role in the original "Patti" keys, but I may be mistaken. Maybe Elaine did...? Any insight??

Linda B sang in Patti's keys from what I can tell from the little tour CD that I acquired.  Elaine's keys where more in line with Glenn's - except for "With One Look" which is 1/2 step lower.  Actaully, Diahann's and Petula's  keys were almost the same, and since Rita took over for Pet while she was on vacation, who knows that they altered for just a month of one person.  Using the Glenn and the Patti recording as references, a lot of the times, my ears will perk up when something sounds "new".  Because the Rita recording is chopped up so much it's hard to tell relation to the other numbers.  If that makes sense.

Did you actually get to see Linda in the tour? Louisville was the second or third scheduled stop, but the show closed in Denver, if I recall correctly, which was its opening city. The First National tour was suppose to open the newly refurbished Orpheum theatre in SF but it closed before the opening happened.  I saw the Petula Clark tour (twice).  I saw Linda in "Cats" and thought she was awesome and would have loved to have seen her in SB.  I'll check with my SB guru pal and see if there is uh... well... something to "see" with Linda in SB.  I do have an audio of Linda in "Aspects of Love" with Ron Bohmer - while I like him (I actually saw him with Sarah Brightman in the show - nice to look at :)  )  she was a bit over the top.  Sarah wasn't the best actress either!!!

Oh, please!

Every year at Christmastime, I visit my mother and other nearby relatives.

After several dinners and get-togethers I am SO ready to come back to California.

Even though I dearly love my mom and want to live nearer to her, it's the other relatives I want to be further away from.  My mom wouldn't visit without calling, but the rest would.  My relatives live in a town smaller than I'm comfortable thinking about, but I will eventually end up there or nearby.  It IS, after all, HOME.

Big Brother 6 SPOILERS:

UNBELIEVABLE !  I was watching for quite a stretch last night and nothing was even remotely hinted at regarding what has transpired today.

It's what makes the live feeds so darned entertaining!!  I have had several passing thoughts similar to Sarah's recent query as to whether Howie had hoped to backdoor Ivette all along.  We all know that's highly unlikely, but I think Howie has finally come to his senses about the stupidity of nominating James and Sarah (and that WAS the right way to go about eliminating the double-whammy of that couple...they are amazingly resilient and resourceful).  Still, Howie knows James WILL be stronger without Sarah and that realization alone makes this "Ivette" nomination so delicious.  I'd much rather it was April on the block, but Ivette will do nicely.  Maybe she can go stay with Cappy now and leave us all in peace.

Even Maggie has confided in April that Ivette's obsession with Cappy has gotten on her nerves.

The real test here is whether April can keep her yap shut or whether she's going to ruin the plan.

Get Ivette out and let Kaysar walk back in and the game is afoot!

Yep, I knew that Jack Haley was dubbed by Buddy Clark in WAKE UP AND LIVE which I find odd because Haley had his own radio show where he sang, and of course, he sang in THE WIZARD OF OZ. Buddy also dubbed Mark Stevens in I WONDER WHO'S KISSING HER NOW, but I found he's sometimes credited with dubbing Stevens in OH, YOU BEAUTIFUL DOLL but actually Bill Shirley did that one.

Speaking of CINDERELLA, just bought tickets for the Paper Mill CINDERELLA and HELLO DOLLY, even though no one's saying who's playing Dolly.

Got great seats for those two shows, but the selection for CARNIVAL was terrible, probably because it's a shorter run, so I'm going to wait until closer to the day (and maybe hope we end up knowing someone involved to get good seats).

But they were very nice about looking for perfs with the best seats.  Most patient regional box office person I've ever encountered.

I don't really care about CINDERELLA at PaperMill. I saw it at NYCO and that was such a miserable experience that I've got a bad taste in my mouth about that show. It's silly, I know, but there you have it.

I've never seen CARNIVAL, but I've heard it's a great score. I'll wait to see who's playing DOLLY before I think about that one. Is Michele Pawk old enough to play the part? I think she'd be faboo....

Oh, CARNIVAL! is one of my all-time favorite shows seen in NYC. I was about 11 when I saw it, and I was enchanted from beginning to end. Couldn't wait to get the cast recording, and I played it until my family was so sick of hearing Anna Maria's voice that I could only play it when my dad was out of the house. Well, I guess "Mira" and "Yes, My Heart" would get old to someone who doesn't like show music and had to hear them dozens of times a day (at loud volume).

Saw CARNIVAL at Encores.  It was a bit creepy (I think it's supposed to be), but I love the score.   It'll be nice to see a full production.

DR FJL: Did you see THE BAKER'S WIFE at PaperMill? It was nice to see the show fully realized, though I was somewhat disappointed with Ms. Ripley's breathy performance.

And this is post #1000 for me! Huzzah!!

I got laundry done last night when I got back, but I did not do lunch with friends today but have stayed around the house catching up on mail and other necessities. I got a few things watched on the DVR that I had recorded while I was gone, but I have not gotten one second to crack open that THIN MAN boxed set and watch them. Hopefully, I can get to one (or two) tonight. I do love them so much, but I have to clear off the DVR because there are shows coming on that I need to record and I need the space.

I think it's Bob Merrill's best score. I know others might prefer TAKE ME ALONG, but I love all the music, and that cast - just sensational! I've used "Her Face" in auditions before because of Jerry Orbach's emotional rendition.

Big Brother 6 Spoiler:

Just as I feared/suspected, it seems April just cannot refrain from wanting to blab the new plan to Maggie.  She IS as stupid as I thought.  Stupid and meanspirited and a major gossip without a shred of remorse.

Maggie, meanwhile, is getting suspicious of all April's and Jenn's dartings into and out of the HOH room.

And Ivette has remarked to Maggie that April and Jenn won't look her in the eye, although April claims Ivette won't talk to her.  Maggie has decided to pack her bags along with Ivette.  I don't know what significance, if any, that has.  If Ivette walks out, will Maggie follow?  The entire house would rejoice!

I haven't read a word about James' reaction to any of it, so things will just have to play out.

It's nervewracking, is what it is!

DR Jason - Yes, it was great to see BAKER'S WIFE, in particular from a historical perspective.  Really enjoyed the score, thought it was too slight a story for its length.  I'm blind to any flaws where Alice Ripley is concerned, though.  And I thought Lenny Wolpe and Max Von Essen were super.

The friend I went with was a friend of Lenny Wolpe's, and Lenny walked us back to the train station.  It was great to see people stop Lenny along the walkway for autographs; he deserves even more recognition than he's gotten so far.
Title: Re:EARS OF CORN
Post by: Jason on August 08, 2005, 02:10:24 PM
I, too, thought Mr. Wolpe and Max were great. Max was actually singing with a paralyzed vocal cord if you can believe it. I rode back to the City with the cast and shared a van with Mr. Von Essen. He's really sweet, though at the time he was keeping quiet to save his voice. He was also dealing with a psycho VAMPIRES fan who kept sending him stuffed animals.

It wasn't me! I swear it!!

I've always loved THE BAKER'S WIFE, though I've always had problems with the idea that a whole town would fall apart based on their baker's productivity. That aspect of the story is a bit flimsy, but the score is wonderful and the new orchestrations sounded incredible. They're the ones we'll be licensing from now on.

Several years ago, I played Jacquot in a local production.  I got to play the "Love Makes the World Go 'Round" theme on the accordion at the top of the show (I had actually taken accordion lessons many, many years ago ::)) and all the scenes with the puppets were quite fun!

Speaking of CINDERELLA, just bought tickets for the Paper Mill CINDERELLA and HELLO DOLLY, even though no one's saying who's playing Dolly.

What I find amazing about the recording my aunt gave me is that I don't remember seeing the TV production in 1957 - I would have been the perfect age and my family usually made an "event" of that sort of thing.

The other amazing thing is the condition of these LPs.  So far, I've listened to Cinderella, Flower Drum Song, and My Fair Lady and they're all in remarkable shape.  They've probably moved from Indiana to Michigan to West Virginia to Arizona to Ohio over a period of almost 45 years.
Title: Re:EARS OF CORN
Post by: FJL on August 08, 2005, 02:14:15 PM
DR Jason - I probably wouldn't be looking forward to CINDERELLA so much if it weren't for Gabriel Barre directing and Jennifer Paulson Lee being set to choreograph.  Skip worked with Gabe at Goodspeed oh so many years ago, and Jennifer Paulson Lee had done the musical staging and choreography for LAST STARFIGHTER at the Storm Theatre.  We loved working with her, and this is the first work of hers that I'm getting to see since having worked with her.

And of course, there's Paolo Montalban as the prince.  I'm a big fan of his.  Not familiar with the work of the actress playing Cinderella, though.

I saw the Cinderella in LA CAGE. She played Ann. I loved Paolo in PACIFIC OVERTURES. He was one of the only things about that production that I liked. Of course, he ain't too hard on the eyes, either.

I normally wouldn't be so poo-pooish about CINDERELLA if it hadn't been for City Opera. Well...the AUDIENCE at City Opera to be more specific. I had such a miserable theatre-going experience with that show that I just can't seem to bring myself to want to see it ever again. Logically, I should just not want to go back to NYCO, but in my demented mind, I'm just turned off of that show. Ha!

Is your apartment big enough?
Title: Re:EARS OF CORN
Post by: FJL on August 08, 2005, 02:24:35 PM
DR Jason - Maybe you already know this, but Max Von Essen is going to be starring in UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG at the Two River Theater Co. in Red Bank, about an hour-fifteen train ride from Penn Station.

Coincidentally, the friend I went to see BAKER'S WIFE with, Maureen Silliman, will be in UMBRELLAS with him.  And Heather Spore - the OTHER blonde in LAST STARFIGHTER who distracted the people in my office while you were distracted by the male blond :) - was offered the "Catherine Deneuve" role oposite Max Von Essen.

So it's a small world all around.

I've never seen a stage version of CINDERELLA that satisfied me as much as either of the first two video versions of the show (they are quite different, of course, but I find them equally satisfying for different reasons. The Brandy version is best forgotten, at least by me).

Just saw this on a David Winters Tribute Site, Date September 2003.

Phil Silvers of Sgt. Bilko fame and Edie Adams provided some of the comic relief, as did Bruce Kimmel. Bruce first met David when he was just 16 and was a dance student at David’s studio. Like Alan, Bruce would go on to dance for David in such shows as Donnie & Marie. A rather prolific actor, producer, composer, etc himself, Bruce has written two roma clef novels about a young boy growing up in LA during the 1950’s, Benjamin Kritzer and Kritzerland. In the third and final installment, due out next year, Bruce has promised to immortalize his favorite dance teacher, when Benjamin Kritzer starts his show business career by taking dance classes. We’ll keep you posted

Sleuthing is starting to pay off.  MBarnum found Randi Kallan, and I've got a message into her at her place of employment.  MBarnum has also found the person we hope is Colleen McLean (well, she IS Colleen McLean, we just don't know if she's OUR Colleen McLean).  He found a number on Phil Clark in NY that wasn't good, but he said in passing he'd try AFTRA but that it was hard to get info out of them.  I immediately called my friend at LA AFTRA, and within ten minutes I got a call from Phil, who's happily living in NY and who sounded just great.  Don't think he'll be able to get out here for the party, so I may go there for a little secondary mini-reunion with him and Kathy Fitzgerald, who was in the ensemble of Stages, and who's been in The Producers since the day it opened.

Big Brother 6 Spoiler:

Well, it has happened.  April could not keep a secret if her life depended upon it.  She has told Maggie of the changed plans.  Right now, Jennifer is trying to fill Maggie in on how it all happened.  Exposition and persuasion are not her strong suits.  Maggie is perturbed at what she is hearing.  Ivette has already filled her in on being given the cold shoulder since she was put up as a "pawn."  Maggie claims everyone on her "side" was granted two weeks immunity.  I believe the deal was between her and Howie and did not encompass Ivette, April, Beau and Jennifer.  I could be wrong.

Jenn keeps telling Maggie it's a done deal...that tomorrow, Ivette will be voted out.  Maggie wonders why James and Sarah were ever put up if the intention was to get rid of one of the "Disciples".

I wish someone who has seen it in all its tawdriness and glory would just drop in and explain it all to everyone...up to this point in time...and then let the game continue.

Anna Maria Alberghetti story, since CARNIVAL came up

A high school friend of mine wrote and co-produced a movie called FRIENDS & FAMILY, which brought Anna Maria Alberghetti's out of movie retirement after at least two decades.   At the premiere of the movie, the credits rolled by without much reaction beyond some polite applause, names like Tony LoBianco, Tovah Feldshuh, etc.  Then came the credit "AND Anna Maria Alberghetti" - and a collective appreciative gasp came up through the room like none I ever heard.

Maybe you had to be there, but it was a very exciting moment.

Gulp - I just bought a new car!  I've leased my last 2 cars, which was OK until I started working full time and traveling a bit for my job and piling on the miles.  GM, in addition to the heavily-advertised "employee discount for all," has an early out program for leases that expire between now and the end of February.  So, for about the same monthly payment, tomorrow I will be the owner (not leaser) of a 2005 Pontiac Vibe.  If I hadn't been able to walk away from my current lease, I'd probably have had to pay for over mileage.  So, please send some Vibe vibes tomorrow.

DR FJL: Congrats on your move to Full Member! I did happen to know that Max is doing THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG. In fact, my friend TJ just asked me if I thought he should take a chorus role in it! It IS a small world after all...

DR Ginny, DR Jason, DR Jose  - thanks for the good wishes.

DR Jose - additional thank you for risking ridicule by showing me through your example that I didn't reach the heights of desperation (maybe the depths of desperation, but not the heights).

This is a wonderful place - my mother always wanted to me to be a DR, and HHW has made a sweet Jewish lady in Brooklyn very happy.

Cillaliz, the freezer conked out again during the night and we lost all of the contents.  We should have moved all the food to the spare refrigerator in the garage.  It is there now.  Tomorrow we will pick up a few items for the freezer section.

Ozderek’, may your stay in the hospital be as comfortable as possible.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DERBRUCER-hope you had a great day.

Jennifer, feel better soon.

Wow, a God and a Goddess this week! Congrats to both FJL and Hisaka!!!

I am now cooking corn on the cob...all this talk of it made me want to buy some at the store. And so I did.

I had some excitement tonight.  I was pretty bored and my friend Paul wanted me to go out for a beer (when he says a beer he means A beer) anyway, I came home and found a bat circling my 12 foot ceiling in the living room. The cats were on the floor spellbound. Sort of like watching a tennis game in the round - or bobble heads!

So I called my neighbor Helen. She's a problem solver type of person. She dragged her husband over and we were in the living room with 2 rakes and a broom trying to get the bat.  I told them I didn't want to kill it, because they eat mosquitos. (The cats were safely shut in the basement)

Well, we were having no luck, so I called my neighbor (he's a state trooper - used to capturing things, if you know what I mean) So he came over and with the rakes a sheet and a towel we finally captured the bat and freed him outside. He was not a happy camper - the screeches he was letting out were really loud!

The funniest thing was when I called the trooper - He answered and I said "Tim, this is Priscilla, I have a bat in my livingroom and need your help!"  He said "You have a what? Who is this anyway?"  He thought I was a crazy calling him. But we got past that and I am now, hopefully, batless

Cillaliz, Keith and I love the bat story, especially the description of your cats.

Bryan became rather adept at catching them while he lived in Ann Arbor.  They would fly through the entrance of a large apartment complex he lived in.

Thanks Jane,
The cats were really funny when I let them back up, they were slinking around looking up. It took them a while to be sure the bat was gone.

It's very hot here today. Luckily we're supposed to have thunderstorms.

Callie is still looking for the bat. She looks at the ceiling, then looks at me, then back at the ceiling.

I finally got around to ANOTHER THIN MAN tonight. It's my favorite of THE THIN MAN films, and so I started with it . (Well, actually, I saw the original THE THIN MAN when it was first issued on DVD, and as I understand it, this is the exact DVD as before only in a keeper case rather than a snapper case.)

Contrast and sharpness were much superior to the version TCM has been showing (and which I made a copy of some months ago). There were some damaged places (two really significant ones), and one really bothersome scratch down the middle of the picture that lasted longer than I'd have liked under ideal conditions. Still, it's great to have an "official" copy.

I will probably go back and watch the others in order now starting with #2, AFTER THE THIN MAN.

Saw the episode of VERONICA MARS that CBS showed last Friday. Very entertaining little mystery. Love Veronica's father and I wish he was more a part of the show.

The last show we saw on our trip was DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. It was very entertaining with outstanding performances from all the cast, a fun stage design, and a David Yazbeck score that I honestly enjoyed more than THE FULL MONTY. I know nothing about his other composing apart from MONTY and this show, but he has REALLY shown growth as a musical theater composer. These are some marvelous songs, tuneful and perfect for each character.

No problem seeing why Norbert Leo Butz won the Best Actor Tony (and other awards) as he has that same charming rascal quality that made Robert Morse so endearing in HOW TO SUCCEED. His and John Lithgow's 11 o'clock number brought down the house, too. As with SPAMALOT and SPELLING BEE, there were standing room only folks across the back of the theater. I am SO glad these worthy, entertaining shows are drawing great crowds of people who seem to be loving the good times these folks are presenting.

One quibble. Who is responsible for that AWFUL hairstyle that Joanna Gleason wears during the show? I found it most unbecoming to her.

DR Cillaliz, the next time you find a bat in your house, open one window or door and turn out all the lights.  The bat will eventually fly out.

Or another one might fly in.

But more than likely, the one bat will fly out.

Big Brother 6 -- More Spoilage:

Have been watching live feeds.  April and Jenn had a long heart-to-heart, during which they both convinced themselves they were never serious about voting out Ivette.

Later, however, after about an hour, I saw them both in the hammock and they're being ostracized from their "Disciples" group and they're both pretty pissed.

So it's REALLY tough to read whether they'll stay true to the "Disciples" or whether one (and there needs to be only one) will swing her vote to the other side.

Howie, in his infinite cluelessness, is convinced he can win Jenn's vote....the same Jenn who blabbed the "evict Ivette" plan to Maggie and who convinced Maggie to have a "group meeting" to get them bonded.

He ought to turn April....and then, if the "Outcasts" win HOH again Thursday night, they ought to put both April and Jenn up for eviction.

James and Sarah are still bitter, bitter, bitter and James is working up more bile than could be considered healthy, IMO.  He needs to get over it and to keep reminding himself that it's only a game...it's only a game...it's only a game.

Ivette...stupid, idiotic Ivette...won't settle her differences with April.  As April has predicted, Ivette can never admit she's wrong about anything.  Ivette's fate in the game may be decided by this sad character flaw.

And poor Ivette keeps saying, "When Cappy comes back into the game, he's going to..."

Sigh.

We tried that for about 30 minutes, but the windows and doors are so much lower than the high ceiling where he was that we were afraid it might take all night. Since it's still over 90 degrees outside, I didn't have that much patience for leaving the house open.  We opted for capturing it without harming it and releasing it outside.

If I'm alone next time, I'll try it.  Thanks for the advice

Question I've often meant to ask...  Why is it called a "keeper case"?
