Title: WE LOVE YOU, MISS HANNIGAN
Post by: bk on November 16, 2003, 12:39:27 AM
Now that you've read the notes (and I do hope you've read them as they're quite lengthy and written from the heart), it's time to do the topic of discussion.  Go to it, dear readers, and let's show these people what we're made of.

Thank you BK for sharing those special memories of Miss Loudon. My first memory of seeing her on TV was in a TV Tony awards presentation when she on the top of a car. I was enchanted by her magic from that moment. I also appreciated reading your views on "Gypsy". The AL version is a special favourite as I saw her do the show in London. The BM should have worked but did not. I have grown fonder of the film as time has passed. When I was in my final year of Seconday School (Snr high?) the girls of our year started our School concert (traditionally organised, auditioned etc by the final year students) with "Let Us Entertain You". I think reheasals for that concert was the first time I had ever heard the score. I was only aware of "Small World" as a "B" side to the We Five hit "You Were on My Mind" a few years later. I did not become a fully fledged musicals fan until the early 1970's.

What wonderful notes, BK. I'm sure Ms. Loudon is in a much better place now, free of illness and full of showtunes.

And what an accurate dissection of the Roz Russell version of GYPSY. I knew there was something askew, but I wasn't able to pinpoint the problem. I must agree, if her songs were in higher keys, she'd rank right up there with the Merm's Rose.

I obtained a copy of the Lansbury recording from a guy at MTI the other day. I can tell that Ms. Lansbury was amazing, but I can really only stand to listen to the overture, Gypsy's "Let Me Entertain You" sequence and "Rose's Turn." The rest of it sort of bores me. :-\ I'm sure they were all wonderful onstage. I do think, though, that it's pretty amazing to actually hear the transformation from Louise to Gypsy in Ms. Charisse's voice during the strip sequence. Her "Pack up your apples, girls, and back to the trees" is tres sexy!

And Natalie Wood was wonderful in just about everything she did (I haven't seen all of her work, so I have to speak generically), and was always beautiful, but as someone pointed out earlier this week, when she walks out of the dressing room and drops the robe and you see her in that cobalt blue gown, she can certainly take your breath away. I agree, she's a pretty girl, Mama.

When I can afford it, I would like to get the other recordings of GYPSY--no matter the quality--just so I can compare and contrast them. So far I only have the original B'way and the London recordings and that's it. I have a long way to go...

Three days more to cake and pointy party hats and colored pantaloons! Whee!!

Thank you Bruce for the wonderful rememberance of Dorothy Loudon. I had the pleasure of seeing perform three times in NYC. Annie, Ballroom and Noises Off. She was always one of the hightlights of the Tony Awards whenever she performed. He recorded performances on DVD include My Favorite Broadway, Broadway's Lost Treasures and Sondheim at Carnegie Hall

Hey, Jason, great picture. I've always loved that line from Gypsy.

It's early in the morning and I just woke up a while ago so I'll come back and post something coherent later.

Beautiful notes about Miss Loudon, BK. Thanks.

Oh, lovely remembrances about Dorothy Louden...and wasn't she also a regular on the old Gary Moore show on, I think, Monday nights.....maybe Tuesdays....that wonderful, wonderful year!

Thanks DR MDS for sharing all the album covers.  Great stuff.

MR BK's personal remembrances of working with her are so nice, and the day's notes couldn't be more perfectly titled!  Yes, Miss Hannigan, we do.....you dumb hotel!  :'(

DR RON - glad you enjoyed the tape, and there was no other way to end it than with Dinah! M-wahhhhhhhhhhh!  ;D

TCB I will finish your tape today.  Email me your snail mail address please.  ;)

My topic for the day.....WAY back in the 1950's there was a television show called The Millionaire, wherein John Beresford Tipton a multi-billionaire would send his secretary Michael out to give a perfect stranger a check for one million dollars, tax free.  It was a lot MORE money then, but what would YOU do if you were given one million dollars (tax free)?  ???

I have to agree with all that is being written about the different Gypsy actresses playing Rose, and it is too bad that Lisa had to sing "down" - she gave an interview once and talked about that very thing.  There is a rumour that there is a bit of Rose Marie mixed in there as well.

My favorite Rose was never recorded, and I mentioned her here before, Miss Gisele MacKenzie!

One million dollars. Hmmm. While I certainly would use it for some fun things, the practical part of me would create an income-producing annuity so that I could use some of the rest for a trip back to Europe and when there is enough income from the annuity, I would retire much earlier than planned, do volunteer work and live an easy and happy life with my Anthony. Perhaps enough could be found in the million to mount a production of a show we both have wanted to do for years (though I'm now too old to play one of the leads, there are a couple of good character roles I would love to do) Boy Meets Boy (not remotely related to the recent Bravo gay dating show) a fun little gay musical by Bill Solly and Donald Ward that takes place during the time of the Wallis Simpson scandal in England.

Lovely remembrance of Dorothy Loudon, bk. Thank you for those memories. Yes, I remember Dorothy on that car while the guys around her sang MAME. That must have been from the 1984 year when the TOnys did tributes to Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, and Herman, who ended up winning the Best Score Tony that year for LA CAGE. Dorothy was always a hoot on the Tonys because, like Nathan Lane, you were never quite sure what she was going to do.

I have to respectfully disagree with bk about Lisa Kirk's renditions in GYPSY. They are plenty powerful enough for my edification. I really think the recorded soundtrack from the film of GYPSY is my favorite rendition of the score, even above the Merman original. But that's purely personal taste.

Oh, boy, do I agree about Tyne Daly's recording. Disgraceful. And I saw her in the show and while she was certainly a good actress, I didn't understand what all the hosannahs were all about. I want those Rose songs to blow me away, and she just did not have the vocal equipment to achieve that.

I love Dorothy's rendition of "Fifty Per Cent" on the Tonys, and I treasured the shot of the audience after she finished with Angela Lansbury, madly applauding her with tears in her eyes. A few minutes later, of course, Angela carried off the Tony over Dorothy.

BOY MEETS BOY. I have the script for that musical and the cast album, but I've never seen a production of it mounted on the stage. Looks like it would be such a charming little show.

Yes I remember those moments you always expect some kind of adlib. I remember at the 50th anniversary of the Tonys she sang and dances a bit of Easy Street and she add libbed "She's still doing it folks". The performers around her genuinely laughed and applauded her. I will miss her.

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Stephen Bates, a musical theater conductor, composer and arranger, died on Nov. 5 in Chicago, where he lived. He was 50.

The cause was AIDS-related lymphoma, said his partner, Larry Baker.

Mr. Bates worked most recently as the music director for the national touring company of "The Lion King" in Chicago. Highlights of his career include "Meet Me in St. Louis" on Broadway and on tour, and "Sunday in the Park With George" at the Goodman Theater in Chicago.

He wrote songs for "Naked Boys Singing," a 1999 Off Broadway musical for which he was the arranger and music director, and for the children's television show "Barney and Friends."

BK--what a beautiful tribute to Dorothy Loudon....it made my eyes tear up a bit.  I don't think I have had as much exposure to her work as other DR's, but she's soo terrific on the OCR of Annie and I also loved seeing her perform "Losing My Mind/You Could Drive a Person Crazy" on Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall.  And of course, her "No Time at All" supasses Irene Ryan's for me.  I think that she could have been a terrific Mama Rose too.

Speaking of which, I have a confession to make.  I have never seen the Roz Russell version of Gypsy.  I don't know...I'm such a Merman fan that I've refused to see it on principle.  I know it's just a horrible thing to admit to, and I probably will rent it sometime in the near future.  Now, I feel that I need to.

Hmmm....I was wondering.  I've never heard the Tyne Daly recording, although I can imagine her voice isn't quite at the level of other Roses.  But did she act the part well at all?  Did she give any unique spin to Mama Rose?

(From yesterday's posts)

Andrea--lol, thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the production of Black Comedy you saw!  It was a lot of fun to do...I had never played a role quite like Ferny, I will say that much!

Jennifer--I'm not sure if movie tickets work any differently in Canada, but I've always just bought tickets (similar to theatre tickets but smaller) and then they are torn in half.  I simply hold on to the stubs for my collection.  Lately though, I put up a little chart on my wall for them and hung them up.  I have them subdivided under good, mediocre and bad!

I think that my favorite moment of Miss Loudon on TV comes from the Tony Award Broadcast where she performed Gershwin's "Vodka."  It's laugh out loud funny, totally a hoot and positively brilliant.
Does anyone remember what year's broadcast that was?  I would assume that it's from whatever year the Urine, i mean Uris theater changed its name to the Gerswhin.

You are right!  I forgot about that year, She was so funny, It was more me the highlight. I also remember acting in a play that night and taped the awards but they ran over and I missed the last 15 minutes when the actual name change happened.

BTW is the Gershwin theater named for both brothers or just George or just Ira? I think I read somewhere that is really is just George.

I am really sorry to hear about Dorothy Loudon.  I never saw her in person but loved her in everything I saw her in on TV (from Garry Moore on) to movies (She was great in "Garbo Talks" among others).  Always loved her voice too.

Reading these here notes and posts is becoming a full-time occupation these days what with the sheer numbers (and even the opaque numbers).  I'm still on Friday's notes.

As for Friday, I finally got something in something else. :o ;) :o
One of those things was a cassette in the car.  It was a compilation tape I'd made for DRMusicGuy years ago.  It had Margaret Rutherford reciting "The Ballad of Dan McGrew," The Andrews Sisters singing "Hold Tight" and Anita Ellis (it was Anita Ellis who dubbed for Rita Hayworth in "Gilda" wasn't it?) singing "Put the Blame on Mame" among many other assorted snippets.

In the CD player, John McGlinn Conducting arranagements of Gershwin, Porter and Kern Overtures--- a fantastic double CD.  The "Damsel in Distress" Suite and "Funhouse" Sequence alone are heaven.

I love "Boy Meets Boy" and was lucky enough to see the original cast.  I love that album and the vocals (mainly because that was the cast I saw) but really like the Minnesota production that DRBen told me about.  I bought a copy of the album at Footlight Records this last summer and really love hearing the songs filled out with an orchestra and not just a synthesizer and drums.  It's a cute show and still holds up well.  I wish I had held up as well.

AND on the "Gypsy" thread, I adore Natalie Wood in the part of Louise.  (and just about everything else she did) Adored the whole thing.  As I've said before  that was the first (and for years ONLY production) I'd seen of "Gypsy."  I grew up  with the soundtrack not the Original Cast album.  Love the OC album(nad would have ginven ANYTHING to see Merman in the part), but still adore the movie.  I have since seen local productions (some of them decent), the Midler version (which was a far better adaptation than I expected from ABC after they screwd up all those other musicals) and finally saw the Bernadette Peters version (WITH Ms. Peters!).  Every version gives me a thrill in some way just because it's such a great show.  And even in the local productions, there is always something to love.

I'm off to do chores, take Sugar for a walk and go to work.  Then to the gym and to a fitting.

Though films for Ms. Loudon were few, she's capable of upstaging both Kevin Spacey and John Cusack in her brief, brilliant scene in Clint Eastwood's MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL.

Good morning/afternoon all,

I hope this finds with having had a restful nights sleep and you a bright eyed and bushy tailed.  Unless you had you tail bobbed but hey, that’s more then I need to know!

What a beautiful morning.  Not cold at all.  Just a very pleasant, comfortable temperature.  Maybe I won’t have to move to Florida after all.    :D

I fear I read last nights posts but I didn't obliviously didn’t comprehend them.  I didn’t realized Miss Hannigan had passed away until I popped over to the other board (BWW) just after I left here.  I was/am very sorry to hear this.

Is it just me or has the world seemed to have gotten so much smaller this year?  So many wonderful people gone.  In my case not just “stars/personalities” I’ve know and loved on the screen or through music but family members as well.

So, When are we having recipe day?  I warn you, some of the software I bought yesterday were cookbooks on a disk.  The Joy of Cooking, One MILLION recipes, and the Campbell’s Soup All American cookbook were three of the disks/programs I chose.  I can’t wait to try some of the recipes out.  They look so good on the screen.  Too bad I can’t print or download them out, fully cooked and ready to eat.  Maybe someone should work on that.   Wouldn't that be great?  Yum!(http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/ernaehrung/food-smiley-002.gif)

I guess that brings me to a topic--what is your favorite food and what is your least favorite food?

Had to choose, I know.  At least the favorite part.  I like soooo many things.  Steak and chicken top the list.

The least favorite side is easy.  Seafood and  liver top the list.  Y U C K!

Must run but will check back later.

Good morning/afternoon everyone!

My apologies for being e & t yesterday - it was the first entire day in a VERRRRY long time that I didn't have to force myself to churn out a paper or two or five.  I put a chain lock on the computer and danced and frolicked outside instead :)

BK - you didn't mention chat in your notes today... I'm guessing it's going to be tomorrow then?

Craig
- I'm guessing that work yesterday was miles of fun and excitement based on your one line post re: crashing into bed

Jason - What are you doing to celebrate your birthday? Apart from donning pantaloons of course.  :)

Danise - my favorite food changes based on my current mood.  Right now it is undeniably mexican fajitas.  I am CRAVING fajitas!!!  My least favorite food remains peanut butter.  I am very mildly allergic and very phobic of peanuts which it turns out is actually not that unique a situation.  The fear of peanuts is known as "arachinophobia"

Andrea: When do you want to go see The Bible: The Complete Works of God (Abridged)? This coming weekend or the one after? (My Sister) Jennifer an her boyfriend Dave both have said they want to go too...

Wow. It appears I've made my very own Ask DR Day   :D

Favorite food, bar none, for me is a nice stuffed flank steak. Which is really odd, because I will next state that red meats are not on my list of favorites - - you can take you pot roast, your broiled steaks, your standing rib roasts, with me around, there'll be more than enough.

Also I like a great Greek Pizza, positively drenched in olive oil and garlic, throw on a few sliced tomatoes, and yummy!  If you're adventurous like me, you can toss on some sweet Italian sausage and some anchovies. . and it's even yummier.

What's everyone's favorite vegeatble, while we're on the subject?

I think that mine is either a portabello mushroom, or something in the squash or zucchini family.

You know, from the standpoint of a lay person, the movie "Gypsy" can be a total revelation.

My idea of a "lay person" is someone who was unfamiliar with the Broadway production.  In 1962, when the movie was issued, I was stunned, transported and totally mesmerized by the movie "Gypsy."  I had also seen, and loved, "The Music Man," which seemed to be on everyone's lips as THE musical of the year and a great success.

I've not understood, in all these years, what kept folks out of the theaters showing "Gypsy," though.  After all, it was the life story of the most famous stripper of them all.  The problem, I'm guessing, is that the folks who'd find that most appealing (men) also heard it was a musical and stayed away in droves.  And because of the subject, they didn't want to take their wives and girlfriends to see it, either.

It had nothing to do with whether they simply couldn't accept a "Gypsy" without Merman.  Merman couldn't pull them into theaters, either.

At any rate, the movie has been with me all these years.  I got it on VHS in its first availability and then on laserdisc.  I've collected all the albums BUT the Daly but the soundtrack is my favorite recording.  Not having "seen" Merman in "Gypsy" I don't have any special associations of her in it, but I deeply respect her originating the role of Mama Rose and I love listening to the cast recording.

But it's "Rose's Turn" on the soundtrack that really blows all the whistles and rings all the bells for me. The advantage of the movies is that the singer doesn't have to do all that powerhouse singing in one take.  Oh! Yes! I admire Merman and Lansbury's peformances, but I love the one in the soundtrack for having the most oomph!

I, too, slept in, BK.  I think you got out of bed five minutes before I did.

I toyed with staying up when I fed my cat at 7 a.m.  And I tinkered with the notion of getting up at 8:15 a.m. when she woke me with loud yowling (probably telling me I'd be late for work -- confused because I had a holiday last week, and I was out of the house early yesterday doing chores).  Cats don't know from dates/days of the week.

Yes, Emily, it's all you arachinophobiacs -- allergic-to-peanuts-folks -- that caused airlines to stop serving those wonderful packets of protein to inflight passengers.  Now we get those tasteless little baked thingies.

I always say SING OUT, LOUISE -- tell the stewardperson you are allergic and he or she will get you something else.

But the rest of us who adore and tolerate peanuts ought to be able to have a choice!

And that's what's wrong with the world today -- people keep taking our choices away!

(Thank you for your kind attention! :) )

The next thing you know, supermarkets will stop selling "dairy" because lactose-intolerant people will complain that the garishly displayed cartons, plus eggs and cheese nauseate them and prevent them from having a pleasant shopping experience.

Ron the Libertarian :) ...

I am actually with you on keeping the availability of peanuts open on flights, kindergarten playgrounds, etc if people are simply phobic of the unmentionable legume and not severely allergic like me.

I admit that my fear is irrational but some people really actually are unable to be in contact with the traces of peanut oil that start flying around when you munch on the nuts for health reasons so I understand why the steps in public places have been taken.

However, I also think that the whole "no-peanuts" allowed thing also needs to consider the fact that many people who are VERY allergic to peanuts also have equal allergic reactions to sesame and corn products.  Just wait until you have a popcorn ban on playgrounds too...

Ron: The Lansbury GYPSY is available on CD all over the place. They have at least 10 copies of it on the shelves at Tower Records at Lincoln Center, which does you absolutely no good, so I don't know why I pointed that out to you. Anywho, I know you can get it on Amazon.com....here's the link:

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003F2A/ (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003F2A/qid=1069010584/sr=8-7/ref=sr_8_7/002-1018985-5213601?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)

Kerry: What's your favorite Natalie Wood movie? I only know a few, I'm afraid, and WEST SIDE STORY and GYPSY are the two that stand out the most in my mind. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS was pretty good, too, though I haven't seen it in years, and I'm embarassed to admit that I've never seen REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. :-\

I have to go do laundry now and face Sta. Lavadora. I don't like her and her dryer-stealing ways. Not one bit.

Ask everyone question: Does anybody know of anywhere that Fields of Ambrosia has been produced?
And what about Night of the Hunter?
Seems to me there's a growing trend of musicals that ONLY exist on disc.

There was a time that having Dorothy Loudon in your cast meant a sure flop.  She joked about it herself, and then along came Annie.  I loved her performances on Broadway in Ballroom and Noises Off.  Wildly different roles, those.

And if I try to think of the greatest individual performances in a musical, I keep coming back to Tyne Daly in Gypsy.  She had the powerhouse energy and, especially, the monstrosity of the character down pat.  Mama Rose is really the King Lear of musical theatre roles.  To do it right, you can't be a "star" who is always caring about the audience loving you - and that's what's disastrous about Bette Midler's turn as Rose.

I like the film.  Haven't seen the current revival.

I did see that Bible Abridged show at the Edinburgh Festival.  Very funny stuff there.  Tell me more about the McGill Savoy group, if you can.

DR Emily: I'm so sorry that I neglected to answer your question in my last post! How will I celebrate my birthday? With you fine people, of course! Actually, I will be working at MTI during the day, and since one of the full-time permanent employees there shares a birthday with me, I'll get to have a piece of cake. (If she didn't have her birthday on the same day, there would be no cake--I was told that by our office manager. I've been there nearly a year, but because I'm a temp, I would not warrant a cake or celebration of my own. That sucks.) After work, I suppose I'll come home and do what I normally do on a Weds. night--play computer games, watch movies and sing. I'm taking off work on Friday just because, and I think that day my friend Jennifer and I will be going to Benihana's for lunch, which is our favorite place to celebrate birthdays. Hers was in July, while I was away in PA, so we're going dutch and calling it even. I can't wait for that teriyaki chicken and hibachi steak! YUM!!

Thank you for asking. :)

I collect antique Evelyn Nesbit and Scarlet Pimpernel postcards and Forever Plaid headshots.

Emily: As a peanut-allergy sufferer, I feel your pain. Sometimes even the smell of peanut butter can make my throat start to itch and close up. I can eat peanuts in small amounts as long as they're part of something else--a candy bar, for example, is fine--but peanuts by themselves I can't do. I ate a bag of airline nuts one day and started having breathing problems on the plane! Talk about scary! When I was a kid, my preschool teacher gave us peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and my eyes completely swelled shut. She freaked out and I thought it was kind of neat. :) I love peanut butter, but I'm afraid it's no mutual admiration society.

We have topics here. We have JRand's topic about $1,000,000. We have a couple of food topics going and Gypsy and Natalie Wood and Miss Loudon seem to keep us talking.

I am wearing Old Navy red and black plaid lounge pants and a t-shirt as I take a break from working. I'm waiting for my sister to call. My feet were cold and I put on slippers then they got hot so I took them off but now they're cold again so I'll put them back on.

I love green beans and tomatoes. I also love peanuts and peanut butter and jelly. I love split pea soup.

I do not like green eggs and ham nor do I like beets. Beets make me cringe. Don't know why but I can't eat them. I've tried borscht (sp?) and it just makes me go "ewwwww" especially when someone puts sour cream in and it turns pink or very light lavender. I'm also not crazy about coconut. I think it's the texture. Liver is also a yuck food along with the other body filter, kidney. My grandmother came over from England as child and loved to have kidneys for Sunday breakfast. My father, consequently, also loved them, although he didn't make us eat them. My grandmother did though. Brains and tongue also do not excite me in a culinary way. I can eat meat but for some reason, the idea of eating the other body parts just doesn't set well.

I have the Lansbury Gypsy on tape but not CD. I should look for it.

It's like a great bonus track on a dvd and also a terrific reflexion of who you are, or the person I think you are.

It's warm, human and terribly moving.

Thank you again.

I only wish I could have seen Ms Loudon in Ballroom and heard her in the songs Ms Karen Morrow sings on one of your Lost In Boston compilations.

Btw, I do think Ms Morrow would be perfect in a revival of that show, opposite TCB! Why not!

And yes, i also remember Dorothy in the Eastwood movie: she shined through all her scenes.

Fajitas are good--I had them for lunch on Friday.  I understand about the peanuts.  I LOVE nuts, sunflower seeds for the most part but was just diagnosed with diverticulosis.  I’m not supposed to eat them or anything with seeds anymore (tomatos included!).  Sigh.  Such is life.  That didn’t stop me from eating my pomegranate (Indian Apple) last weekend.  I paid.  Oh yes, I paid dearly for that indiscretion but it won’t stop me from enjoying them when it’s this time of year.

Chestnut anyone?  I bought those yesterday but I’ll pay for them tonight.   What's your favorite way to eat them?

We cut crosses in them and soak them in salt water for a few hours.  Then we put them on a baking sheet and bake at approx 350-400 for about an hour or an hour and a half.  Yum!  I LOVE chestnuts.

DR Sandra what a lovely photo of your collection!  Framed and arranged!  What did you think of the movie The Girl In the Red Velvet Swing and Evelyn's role in  Ragtime?

I too have the Lansbury Gypsy - which might have been great onstage, but the recording is less so.  My two favorites are of course the Soundtrack at last at CD and Merman's!  Peters?   :P
Sorry that her rabid fans will be horrified and tell me that I just don't get it and don't understand it's a brand new Rose, a sexy Rose, and a Rose closer to the real Rose....doesn't matter....if she was right for the part, why did they have to re-think it?  That recording is terrible and she is the reason.  And I won't change my mind and I can't be convinced otherwise.

"The Happy Time" and "Ballroom" would be two of my favourite shows on Cd that I have never seen performed  in any form. (even as a "reading"). "The Grand Tour" is another one on the list. I shouldn't make light of it though.  I hope they didn't steal anything else from you!

I like the Lansbury GYPSY very much indeed, but she does run out of gas in "Rose's Turn." And the alternate notes she has to take in "Together" are also jarring. Apart from that, I find it very well done.

Favorite food: Southern fried chicken. Favorite veggie: broccoli.
Least favorite food: liver. Least favorite veggie: beets.

Oh, yes, THE HAPPY TIME. I adored this musical, and I think it got the shaft from the critics. It was in the wrong theater (the humongous Broadway) instead of the Music Box or something possibly even smaller. The stories about Merrick holding the curtain for the Times critic and that angering the others and their taking it out on the show seems VERY plausible to me.

Goulet was stunning to look at, a real star presence with a voice that could thrill and seduce, and Michael Rupert was so charming as Bibi. David Wayne was a joy, kind of the John McMartin of that period of his career. All in all, a show as charming and special in its own way as SHE LOVES ME was in its time.

I don't know what kind of re-sale street value they'd have where "he" does his business.

But then you never know until you draw them out.

Of course, you don't want to draw them out too far or you'll find yourself fly fishing somewhere when you'd rather be taking in a concert.

I checked with all the second hand music stores around (I know many of them - surprise!) but there was no sign of my "specialist" collecetion. I did find a very inexpensive Barbara Cook Disney album with a scent of Italy. I wondered why and whence it had traveled.

I don't supposed you "rescued" said Barbara Cook CD, did you?

It was very special to me, as it had been sent to me for my birthday!

I replaced it immediately, of course.  But there was such sentiment attached....

No TCB, Tom is exactly right. There is/was a disco version of "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." Just awful to my ears, but it does exist.

But it's always a relief to simply move on past it.  Get on with one's life and all that sort of thing.

Nemo is w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l!

You're gonna fall in love with this.

Folks have already started talking about an Oscar nomination for Ellen deGeneres' "Dory" -- much the way they've done for Andy Serkais' "Gollum".

No, they don't "qualify"...but much talk has been generated.  It will be interesting to see if a "comment" is issued by AMPAS.

And speaking of "LOTR" -- I'm expecting my deluxe collector's edition of "The Two Towers" in the mail next week.  I can't wait to see it with 40 extra minutes Plus that fabulous DTS sound!

Ask everyone question: Does anybody know of anywhere that Fields of Ambrosia has been produced?
And what about Night of the Hunter?
Seems to me there's a growing trend of musicals that ONLY exist on disc.

I thought for sure someone would have answered this one by now.

Was produced in London in 1996 with Americans Joel Higgins who also wrote the lyrics and the book and Christine Andreas. It is based (how much I am not sure) on the film The Traveling Exucutioner. There is an cast album and Christine recorded a couple of songs from it on one of her albums (don;t have which one handy) and Higgins guested on the cd for those songs.

As for The Night of the Hunter (http://www.nodanw.com/shows_n/logos/nighthunter.jpg) there have been a couple of productions of it in the US.  There was an April 2003 worskhop production in NYC The April cast included Ron Raines ("Guiding Light") as The Preacher (reprising his concept album work), Beth Fowler (Beauty and the Beast) as Rachel Cooper, Julie Johnson (Das Barbeque) as Willa Harper, Mary Stout (Jane Eyre, Beauty and the Beast) as Icey Spoon, George Lee Andrews (The Phantom of the Opera) as Walt Spoon, Gordon Joseph Weiss (Ghetto) as Uncle Birdie, Ricky Ashley as John Harper, Jennifer Michelle Brown as Pearl Harper, Brian Noonan as Ben Harper, Tina Johnson (Best Little Whorehouse, Casper) as Miz Cunningham, Gloria Hodes as Nellie, Taylor Giacomo as Ruby, Samantha Meckes as Mary Samantha Blinkas as Clary, with Gregg Goodbrod, G. Shane Peterman and David Lowenstein.

This is aiming for a major production  in Sept. 2004 at the Willows Theatre in Concord, CA

The company of the April 2003 production. (http://www.stephen-cole.com/hunter8.jpg)

Ron Raines who was on the concept album and appeared in the workshop, (http://www.stephen-cole.com/hunter4.jpg)

and below is the new logo. I prefer the art work that was use on the cd cover

And here is one of Sally Mayes and Ron Raines recording the album

MAtt: :The Shipping News Is very much a favourite in this house. The first DVD purchased. A sadly neglected film. UK critics gave Mr Spacey a nod for his performance but the U.S.A. did not notice. He was playing the character perfectly. I am sure that Annie Proulx would have loved it. I think he would be ideal in "Ace In The Hole" too. I wonder if his "Bobby Darin" film is anywhere near getting started. Last i read it was in "pre - production". "Shipping News" was my firsrt real knowledge of the wonderful Julianne Moore too. And didn't Cate blanchette produce yet another brilliant performance as "Petal". Added to all that there was the impeccable performance of Dame Judi. Does that answer the question? Ponderous the film was not. True to the book and its characters it was.

How about these theaters in NYC and LA that are showing the first two LOTR films and then premiering RETURN OF THE KING afterward? This is like 9 hours of filmwatching, I'm assuming with lunch/dinner break in between.

As grand as I think the films have been (and there is no need to think the final installment won't be equally wonderful), I don't think I could do this.

How can a movie/book about Newfoundland be anything BUT ponderous.  It would just be weird to see the Island as happy and light and fluffy.

Maybe I can post in peace now.  It’s hard to think when you’ve got a cold nose poking you in the arm.  One thing I can say for my animals, they know what they want.  Even the fish on my desk at work knows if he gives me the eye hard enough, a treat will soon be forthcoming.  Oy.  I guess I’m just an old softie.

Now where was I before I was interrupted?

I know I wanted to say as far as veggies go, I LOVE mushrooms, squash and (Gasp!) Brussel  Sprouts.   I never liked them as a kid but I guess you can chalk that up to changing tastes.

There’s another topic.  Is there any food you eat now (and like/love) that you wouldn’t TOUCH as a kid?

I don’t know why I’m on a food kick today.  It wasn’t planned.  Let me try a different subject.

What are you favorite TV shows right now?  Mine are JAG, Joan of Arcadia, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and One Life To Live.  I try to like Star Trek: Enterprise but I just can’t get close to it.

I'm looking forward to seeing the end of the trilogy.  IMHO the first two were very well done.  I'm just sorry they didn't do The Hobbit.

I am looking forward to the corruption that goes with power. Some of us DRs may well feel even more at home. Welcome back to the board TCB. We are having shepherd's pie tonight  -not peppered with actual shepherd but accompanied by Bear. Fish pie doess not seem appropriate if we are going to watch "Nemo". I am not really a fish fancier but I have been known to dine on "John Dory".

Tom-Don't-Do-Windows!

Same thing happened the other day at the White House!

All windows were cleaned and then they had a Bush fire...

The strange thing is that the fire was in Ca., among other places!

Oh, just remebered reading yesterday that some people here in France are planning a stage musical version of Bagdad Café -- French spelling -- for next year....

Intéressant n'est-ce pas?

When Colin and I first saw "The Shipping News" it was in a cinema in a country town. The audience applauded the film - no-one does that in the city. Maybe country folk are more in tune with the pace of the film and its characters. Just a thought.

DRs Emily and Andrea might be able to relate to this.  I was at KFC yesterday in the mall (or for us PFK) and I had these 2 for 1 coupons from the entertainment book. But I had it on the side of the English coupons. And the menus are in french. And I was trying to figure out which item was which.  Anyhow, I am so dumb. Cause of course on the other side is the french version of the coupon. So I just turned it over. And found that KFC's Big Crunch is PFK's Super Croc. And it was actually VERY GOOD. It was a huge chicken breast with tons of the special breading, in a bun with lettuce and dressing. Yum, yum, yum!

I also remember thet the article I read was mentioning a French stage version of CHICAGO that originated not long ago in Montréal and that was heading to France, for a February 2004 opening in Paris!!!

Can our Canadian Kimlets and Hainsies confirm there is/was such a French adaptation of the musical, please?

Of course, the writer being rather young, I guess, wrote that it was a stage adaptation of the recent movie!

MONTREAL - The world's first French-language production of the hit musical Chicago is set to make it premiere this summer in Montreal.

The cast held an open rehearsal Wednesday for the Montreal production that opens July 16 at Place des Arts as part of the Just for Laughs Festival.

Quebec actor and composer Manuel Tadros, who did the song translations for the Quebec version of the Hollywood film, translated the book and song lyrics for the show.

Tadros says there are plans to take his translation to France next year. He said he may have to adapt the language to suit a different audience.

"I started my translation with a very good French. And I've adapted it to Quebec a little bit with some expressions we have here. When I have to do it for France I will have to re-work on a French Parisian."

Director Scott Faris, who doesn't speak French, said he hasn't run into any communication problems with the cast.

"I direct them in English, most of them speak English. But there's somebody here to interpret if there's a problem or confusion of any sort."

Quebec singer and comedian Anthony Kavanagh, one of the province's most popular stars, will be coming home from Paris to play the lead male role of Billy Flynn in the production.

Kavanagh lives in Paris and is a celebrity in France.

The film version of Chicago racked up six awards including best film at this year's Oscar ceremony.

The story revolves around women murderers on death row competing for media publicity.

Holy moley on rye, I go watch a movie and when I come back we're about to cross the 200 post mark.  We are white hot here at haineshisway.com, we are sizzling like fried onions.

I totally agree about The Night of the Hunter - I hadn't seen the art for the workshop.  Of course, our CD cover was by the wonderful John Alvin, who is a real movie poster artist (he also did my Drat! The Cat! cover, which is equally wonderful).  I never thought he do the covers, especially for the money we had, but he did and he did a great job creating them - they went through various stages to get them right but NOTH is just a wonderful piece of work.  Mr. Alvin, for those who might not know, created the original movie poster art for Blazing Saddles, Phantom of the Paradise, ET, The Lion King and many others - he also did the very elegant main title paintings for Victor/Victoria.

I was not aware sesame and corn products could have the same reaction as peanuts.  Peanuts don't bother me, however I have had some rather unpleasant reactions to various foods.  I assure you, it is not fun when you can't breathe.  Therefore I am sympathetic to the banning of peanuts in certain locations.  I will admit this would have been very difficult for school lunches, especially for my vegetarian children.

Never realize the work that John Alvin has done. It really is a lost art these days. So many times a poster's art work is what people think about when they mention the movie.

I remember waiting in line to see the Poseidon Adventure and looking at the wonderful art work of its poster. I only wished it really depicted an actually scene in the movie.

Vegetarian children?  I didn't know there were such things.  I, myself, am not a vegetarian or a child.  For example, last night I had prime rib.  I also ate some little fishies known as clams in my chowder.  Today I had bacon with my eggs.  I have no bad reactions to any food except, funnily, that purple cabbage they use in salads - for some reason that makes my lips balloon up sometimes.  I do, however, feel there should be a popcorn ban on playgrounds because popcorn can lead to evil things.

Yes, you did Mike, yes, you did!

And no, you're not Mr Cellophane!

And... THANK YOU!

I've found a review of it which was so so; it took the critic, of English expression, some time to warm up to listening to the songs in French!!!

"Razzledazzle them!" becomes "Ensorcèle-les" which is quite a French tonguetwister!

I, for one, would love to play Bill Flynn!
And, contrary to my almost twin brother, agewise, Richard Gere I could do my own TAP dancing!

I've been home all day and finally am posting.

That was a wonderful tribute to Dorothy Loudon, Bruce.  I always feel sad that people can’t read things like that when they’re alive.  Rarely have I read a tribute (other than the requisite obituary) that felt forced or insincere and yours, most certainly, is neither of those.

I have most of the Dorothy Loudon recordings that Michael Shayne posted pictures of.  I don’t have Lolita, My Love (I would guess that not many people do) and I only have her solo album “Broadway Baby” (which I love).  Her version of "Pack Up Your Sins and Go to the Devil in Hades" is my absolute favorite version of this song.  Okay, I've only heard it done by a couple of other people, but still I love hers more.   ;D

DR Jennifer, this is one race I know I'll lose since I'll be away for 2 1/2 days. On Tuesday afternoon I go to Cleveland for business and I don't have a laptop and I won't be able to surf at our Cleveland office. I'll be making a presentation all day Wednesday (from 9:30 to 3) and in the morning on Thursday. I'll be back in NYC Thursday evening. The way people are posting, I'll probably fall off the Top Ten posters. I'll have to play catch-up when I get back.

DR Michael, the Poseidon An Upside Down Musical was done this year as part of the Fringe Festival in NYC. I didn't get to see it. It was a sellout and tickets were very hard to get. It got decent reviews. Seems like a late night, hole-in-the-wall theatre kind of thing. It didn't rise above the pack like Urinetown did so I don't think anything will happen with it for a while.

I was hankerin' for Dorothy Loudon's "Fifty Percent," so , I put the dvd in of THE LEADING LADIES.  Since putting it in, I've watched Dottie numerous times, but, I just can't get enough of Debra Monk doing "Everybody's Girl."  Or. . .Andrea McArdle's soft, yet effective pairing of "Look for the Silver Lining" and "Tomorrow."

I have a question about Dorothy's "Fifty Percent" performance in THE LEADING LADIES.  At the end of the song, she makes a gesture with her arms that, at first glance, looks like an "I did a great job" gesture, but the more times I watched it seemed like an "I overcame great obstacles in my life to even be able to perform this song at all" gesture.  First of all, does my long and unseemly sentence make sense and secondly, what do those of you who've seen it feel about that?  Does anyone else feel that way?  I had never known that she was battling cancer or had even been sick.

This cast is SO disappointing!!

Josephine Blake is in the OLC of SWEET CHARITY and has a terrific voice, but here sounds just plain bad as almost everybody else... Of course, it's quite many years after for Josephine... (simply called Jo! Oh a Silk Stockings ref')

I wish they would put the OLC on cd: Sheila White was great. She played the same part in the French adaptation in Paris some time after! She's Nancy's friend in the film version of OLIVER!

Only once have I seen three movies (in a movie theater) in one day and it was a butt (and bladder) buster...however, for the three "Lord of the Rings" movies, I would attempt to see them all in one day in a movie theater.  I'd probably have to take a day of vacation from work and go on a weekday, but attempt it, I would.

Is it any good?

It only played for one week in the middle of August here, but I read a nice (French) review of it saying it was quite funny...

I know there's a cameo by Dame Julie which is supposed to be funny if not hilarious!

The film, btw, was done quite a few years back!

You're right François, The English Dames at Sea is disappointing. It's missing something besides the fact that it doesn't sound that good technically. I only know the OBC w/Bernadette and the rest so I picked this up cheap in a used CD store. Well, I'll just add it to the CDs that I bought, listened to once and then it sits on the shelf. Maybe I'll even sell it back to Academy (the place I bought it).

It's just funny. At least I thought it was.

Sandra, how long have you been fencing? Do you compete? I took stage combat and fencing at University. It was through the theatre department so the competitive part was not there. Fencing is an incredible sport to keep yourself in shape. It took some time to get there (what with the posture and lunging, etc.) but once I started doing it and keeping at it, I was in great shape. I had my foil and mask for years thinking I would get involved again but a few years ago, decided it was time to pass on my equipment to someone who would actually use it. I dontated it to a Thrift Shop.

So, it's this one that put us over to Page 9.

I'm not into numerology but it's Post #240 on the board today and for my personal total it's Post #340. That has to mean something.

I have just spent 4 hours with my new cousin from Kazakhstan. I'm in love! She is the sweetest, funniest little kid I've ever met. She speaks almost no English, but she mimics everything she hears like a parrot, so after saying "My name is Sarah!" 5 million times, they could ask my name in Russian, and she would yell "SARAH!!" She's fascinated by almost everything in the house, including the refrigerator, the fireplace, the dog, dimmer switches, and computers. She also canot grasp the concept of a snack, so if my aunt ever puts food out, she automatically begins stuffing herself, because in the orphanage, they ate what they could grab. It's sad, but she'll catch on fast, and in a few weeks, she'll speak a LOT of English. I'm so happy right now. She's perfect! We bonded over high fives and "YMCA" (She obviously doesn't understand what she's doing with her arms, but has fun anyway.), and she cried when I left! It broke my heart. But luckily she's only an hour drive, so I can go and see her a lot, along with my other cousins.

At the moment, I'm wearing gray and pink velour sweatpants, an old maroon choir teeshirt, and black slippers with moons and stars that glow in the dark. I am the clash-master right now!

If I had a million dollars right now...I'd save it for college. I am so in need of college money right now. And a scholarship.

Favorite Food? Mashed Potatoes with melted cheese on top. Yummmmmm.
Least Favorite Food? Most seafood. Blech. And pot roast. And chicken pot pie.

:( I was looking forward to chat tonight...hmpf. I might not be able to make it tomorrow night. Ah, well. What can you do?

Ron: Henceforth, I shall call you Almighty Rod. (Ron-God mix)

As I write thie I am reviewing this moment once again. I am not sure which gesture you are refering to, but perhaps you mean when she clenches both hands and says yes! I would like to believe that perhaps it had been about 20 years since she performed that song (and adding the cut song If Anyone Had Told Me) and she still was able to do it. The memory of seeing her perform that number in Ballroom, (I was in front center) will always be a stand out for me in my theater going. The orchestra and the conductor also applauded her and just before she left she added a little Miss Hannigan to it.

Also in that show was the late great Nell Carter doing two songs from Ain't Misbehavin'

Okay, here is my post on multiple topics:

What would I do with a million dollars?  Keep it and not tell anyone!   ;D  After paying off my credit cards, I’d (anonymously) send people money and just keep quiet about it.  Wouldn’t you love to open your mailbox one day and find a check made out to YOU for $10,000?  I wouldn't give all of the money to one person, that way more people could be helped and surprised.

What’s my favorite and least favorite foods (vegetables included)?  Too many of each to mention…so I won’t.  I never have a “single most favorite” or “least favorite,” actually.  I usually say "some of my favorites (or least)", but never "most" favorite.

Clothing check:  a t-shirt with the logo of a local community radio station on the front and back; shorts with one pocket in the back (on the right butt-cheek) and four pockets in the front:  two regular ones and two on top of those that are just patches attached to the outside of the legs.  Jockey shorts for unders and no socks.  I’ve been inside all day and it’s raining.

One last post before it's off to la-la land.

How wonderful for you,  SwishySarah.  I'm glad to know you and your cousin hit it off so wonderful.   :D

I can't remember who said it but I did go to Amazon.com to look for my software.  Thanks.  I hope Bear gave you a Karma point when he had the wand in his paw.

I must have missed the million dollar question--it figures with my luck!  I can't win the lotto to save my soul.  It started on my B-day and I have played the same numbers all these years (15 to be exact) but have yet to win more than $30.00.  Is that a hoot or what?   :D

Still if I did win, just one million (chomp change-- I want at least 10-20--I'm joking but if your going dream make it BIG!)  I would do the usual.  Buy a house, a car and take a nice long trip to NYC then maybe London and on to Ireland.

Oh, one more thing.  I would buy Swedish Chef Hats for everyone here.

Bear, Brandi and I wish you all a good night.

When Colin and I first saw "The Shipping News" it was in a cinema in a country town. The audience applauded the film - no-one does that in the city. Maybe country folk are more in tune with the pace of the film and its characters. Just a thought.

Maybe those country folk were just applauding because the lights came on again?

Swishy--Anastasia sounds soooo adorable.  Picturing a cute little girl dancing to YMCA was just cracking me up.  How long is it going to be though before Cousin Sarah gets her addicted to Thoroughly Modern Millie and Hairspray though!

François :P--On the Chicago DVD, they also have an option for French language.  Do you know if this translation is the same as the new stage version?

Maya the French dub in Quebec is different from the French dub used in France. The translator who did the work in Quebec will also be doing it France but it will be a different translation. Most of the DVD offered in Quebec are the English version with the alternate French track and the DVD artwork is slightly different. If a DvD release is Quebec does not have a Frencha alternate tarck then a special edition is made. But it is interesting to note that my Franciohone friends who are bilingual prefer to see the original English language version as opposed to a dubbed version.

Friday evening there was an unexpected phone call...from an improv troupe that's not employed my services since the mid-nineties!  I figured they must have been really desparate to have remembered my name.  They obviously have a long list of people they call, and, with short notice, everyone above me on that list had said no.

I told them they weren't offering enough money to pique my interest, and, surprisingly, they said "How much WOULD make it worth your while?"  So, I merrily cancelled plans to go to a dinner party in Harlem and hit the road for an unheard of town in New Jersey.

We pulled up to find a locked theatre.  But our contact was there, and he'd already called the police.  That's right: He was going to convince the police to unlock the theatre, which appeared to be part of a high school.  It seated about 1000 and had a lovely grand piano for me to play.  The audience, from the look of them, was far beyond high school: Nobody under 60.

I can't say we did a very good show, but being with the cast of four and the stage manager for those 8 hours wasn't trying or unpleasant.  I had a good enough time, and bid them a fond farewell: "We'll have to do this again... in 2009."

DR Maya,

I have seen Chicago -- the film -- both in French and in English.
For the French version did keep the songs in English with the translation in subtitles which were the same for the English version.

The French lyrics are very clever but I doubt that they match the music and I'm quite convinced that the French stage version is totally different lyricwise.

For the dvds, as far as I know, most of the French dubbed films shown in Canada are the ones adapted here in France.

Note to DR Ron Pulliam: I have some catnip for Miss Vickie. Could you email your mailing address to me at DearReaderLaura@cs.com -- when we reloaded the computer I lost all the filed emails. In fact -- I lost everything! Everything? Everything!! (oh, a Moby Dick reference!)

Knowing that there is still a couple of hours of good posting time left for those on the West Coast and beyond, I will leave it with you to break 300 posts and make bk a happy camper for sure!

See everyone around tomorrow, I hope.

TCB  Sorry about the delay in review posting.  Jed and I had a wonderful time at She Loves Me.  The cast was made up primarily of professors and students of the professional acting school at University of Washington.  The show was very well cast, IMHO.  The acting was strong, and the singing was incredible.  Particularly pleasing to me was the fact that they did the entire show acoustically, with no mics.  The orchestra was placed on a platform above the stage and the audience had no trouble hearing the actors over it.  It was wonderful to see that the skills of projection and diction are not entirely lost in today's theatre world.
One of my favorite parts of the show were the sets and costumes.  They were beautifuly coordinated with eath other. There were themes of pale pink for the shop and the customers.  Amalia and George had matching themes of blue in their costumes.  They were very tastefully done and worked beautifully.  DR Jed is always more critical than I, so I'll let him highlight any negative points he might have seen :)
Also, notice the sparkling new pic of Jed on his proflie...courtesy of me :)
I'm off to watching Finding Nemo with my dear friend Tiana

Craig, you DO like rubbing your glamourous life in, dontcha? :)

Kerry Butler? (first guess...)

Post by: Emily on November 16, 2003, 09:17:53 PM
but then again... does Ms. Butler count as a "HHW 'CELEBRITY'"?

why is the celebrity is quotation marks.... hmmm... is it code... is it a hint... is it fatigued/sugar-induced punctuation marks...

Nope.. not Kerry.. that was dinner the other night.. no.. this is a HHW "Celebrity"

see my next guess would be DR Jason but in that case you would have said a HHW DR and not "celebrity" (although I am not denying Jason's star qualities :) )

Craig it is simply TOO late for guessing games!

Friday evening there was an unexpected phone call...from an improv troupe that's not employed my services since the mid-nineties!  I figured they must have been really desparate to have remembered my name.  They obviously have a long list of people they call, and, with short notice, everyone above me on that list had said no.

Noel! I, too, received a call TODAY from an improvisational comedy troup! HOw curious and how bizarre. . .do you think we can pass these phone calls along?

Anyway, these guys are starting a new theater company, and had heard about me from the owner of RedFin Blues (the restaurant which I've posted about previously) who has seen my cabarets as well as having been a key reader for me at various times; well, they would like me to advise and perform for them!
Of course, I told them that I would indeed help them in any way possible.

One of our DRs will be pleasantly surprised to find that the new theater is mere blocks away from where Miss Evelyn Nesbitt grew up. . .maybe I should suggest that the theater do RAGTIME. . .

Anyway, their website is up, but not quite together yet. . .
www.thevaulttheater.com (http://www.thevaulttheater.com)
there is at least a great picture of an historic landmarked building which will house the theater.

Could Craig have had dinner with a resident of New Jersey by chance?  Or, did he have dinner with the world's most handsome man?

I had dessert with a HHW "Celebrity" - think people, think -- it's simpler than you think. Easy as 1-2-3 (oh, a sondheim reference)

I believe I know who Craig had dinner with, and it is neither a resident of New Jersey or the world's most handsome man, although the dinner person might take exception to that.

Meanwhile, may I just say, holy moley on rye?  Not only have we passed 300 posts, we've just passed 6,000 posts since we opened this board.  Amazingly amazing.

BK - I am most confident YOU know who I had DESSERT with. I did not have dinner with this person. Although what I had for dessert was enough for dinner. It was a HUUUUUUGE "tootsie roll rice krispie treat"

I know who it was.

I went to see ELF tonight. It was a cute movie for about an hour, and then Will Farrell just got to be too much for me. But I met some very nice people (a friend of mine has started a weekly movie-going group, and we have had new people both weeks so far). Anyway, back to dinner...

Dear Readers--

I have been very, very, very (that is three verys) errant and truant this weekend, I have.  I had to go thither and yon and even yon and thither this weekend, while all of you hainsies and kimlets posted away for my mental delectation.  I just had a bagel.  Isn' t that too too?  I am just jiggy with all the posts this weekend.  Weekends are usually slow around these parts, but not this weekend, oh no.  Did you realize that oh no backwards is on ho?  Is that anything like Don Ho?  Or ho ho ho?  (That is three hos, and I am not talking about the del Rubio triplets putting their luve up for sale.)  Did anyone notice that I typed luve and not love?  What the world needs now is luve, luve, luve.  (That is three luves.)  What the hell am I  talking about?  Has anyone noticed that this is a very long paragraph?  Mr. Bark Makalor abhors (again with the hos and hors) long paragraphs.

Whew, that was a long paragraph, wasn't it, Dear Readers?  In any case, I must do things I must do, and attend to various sundry and moonwet tasks.  Post away, my pretties, and I'll be checking in frequently to see your cherce thoughts and comments.

Dear Readers--

Needless to say, that last post was my entry in the "Write Like BK" contest going on in these here parts.

Dear BK--Lovely tribute to Miss Loudon.  I always enjoy hearing stories about major stars who allow their humanity to guide them in the way the live and the way they work.  Your behind the scenes stories were wonderfully informative about the recording process as well as what kind of person Miss Loudon was.  We will miss her.

Dear BK again--So Linda Hart was a schoolmate of yours?  I saw a production of Light Up the Sky at the Pasadena Playhouse a few years ago in which Miss Hart was featured, and she stole every scene in which she appeared.

Dear Reader Ron Your Excellency Ron Your Emminence Ron Your Holiness Ron So What the @#$% Are We Supposed to Call You Now Ron--I am not worthy.

Dear Readers--I saw a production of La Cage Aux Folles last night in Long Beach, mounted by Musical Theatre West.  It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular, either.  David Engel was excellent as Albin.  He has a great voice and looked great, in or out of drag.  Norman Large was good as Georges.  Les Cagelles were OK.  My recollection of when I first saw the show (national tour at the Pantages Theatre, over 15 years ago) was that the Cagelles were absolutely thrilling.  Over those 15 years, I also had forgotten how thin the book to the show is.  Still, there are some marvelous gems in the score (what an Act I curtain!)  So what song was going through my head when I woke up this morning?  "Ann on My Arm."  Yecch!  (With all due respect to Dear Reader Ann, of course.)

Last Thursday night, I saw The Lisbon Traviata for the first time in a small production at a Hollywood acting company.  Being the opera queen I am, I adored the first act.  For those of you who have seen the play, you don't need me to tell you that the tone of the second act is very different from that of the first.  On the whole, the play was well done.

Today, I saw Madama Butterfly at Opera Pacific in Orange County.  This was a very innovative production, and although tradition was ignored in the staging in some significant ways, the staging worked well with the music and enhanced the experience, challenging the notion that a warhorse is a warhorse is a warhorse.

Yes he is back but it has taken me 25 minutes to read through all the posts I have missed. Many thanks for those who have made smile so much along the way. Especially the wicked! I have been out partaking of Orange cake with friends. TCB's comment re my choices for this evening are classic but alas he had I think retired for the night. Thanks to Ann for the "She Love Me" review. At only one school I taught at in the last 20 years were children taught to project and cope without the use of techinical assistance. Sad. To me it should have been an essential part of their training.

Andrea--I find it a bit bizarre too that I have so many karma points (though I am VERY grateful).  I think a lot of them were actually sympathy points for my recent break-up though.

Ann--enjoyed your She Loves Me review!
