Well, you've read the notes, you've ruminated on the notes, the notes have ruminated on you, and now it is time for you to post until Ye Olde Cows Come Home.

I am a Goddess. :)

Congratulations, DR Hisaka!  And a beautiful one you are.  Also, kudos to DR FJL; I see you're moving quite quickly through the pantheon as well.

Well, I'm on the last band part of THE GOLDEN APPLE, which I will turn in this morning to Tams-Witmark; my neuroses are now clicking in that at the first band rehearsal, Jonathan Tunick will begin the prelude and we will have two-four hours of horrendous errors I missed.  I guess it's the equivalent to the actor's nightmare.

So, I've a houseguest this week:  DRJoey from Indiana has arrived safely, and he's discovering the horrors of having three keys to enter an apartment, how unlike sitcoms real New York apartments are, and that I'm unbalanced, since I'm not rich enough to be considered eccentric.

Have a good day!

My love for musical theatre started with the first one I saw - Kismet.

A local production of "Company" led me to want to know more about the works of Mr Sondheim.  A good road to travel

Books:  James Baldwin's "Another Country", "The Fire Next Time" and  "Giovanni's Room" certainly helped me broaden my taste in literature.

The books from School that I found were not a chore to read were "Cry The Beloved Country" and "Great Expectations".

Good morning, Gentlemen.  I see a TomovOz and an Elmore.   :)

I just heard that the shuttle won’t be coming down here in Florida—It’s going to be Edwards AFB.  It doesn’t matter where it comes down just as long as they all come down safe and sound.

No bus to catch today.  I have to drive in because I have a Doctor appointment but I still have to leave now to make it on time.

Have a great day all.   :) :D :)

I had to read the notes from last evening which kept me in a different part of the board until now.

I'm listening to David Jacobs on BBC 2 right now as I finish my oatmeal, raisins and banana. Then I needs must begin work.

Big Brother live feed talk:

Hey guys who watch the live feeds.  I need some help. I am so confused!

From the canoe site what i got is that april/jen were reconsidering their decision to vote out ivette (they decided they would tell janelle/howie/rachel they were not serious).

Then the entire FRIENDSHIP met, and Ivette and april made up.  So now april/jen are voting out sarah.

BUT from what DR Ron posted last night, did jen go to maggie BEFORE that and tell her about the plan to evict ivette?  And now are april/jen really going to go back on their word?

I think Big Brother was definitely trying to stop this since they kept calling jen/april to the diary room to stop their talking with maggie/ivette!

I think instead they should have changed the vote to yesterday. I had a bad feeling that april/jen would change their minds.  I still don't understand what their motivation was for agreeing to oust ivette over sarah.  But their big mistake was telling the outcasts they would do so.  Because now that they have gone back on their word, I think they will be nominated next week!

Plays and movies that changed my life -  Some pop to mind.

Seeing FOUR ON A GARDEN, starring Carol Channing and Sid Caesar (also in the cast, it turns out, a young Tommy Lee Jones - maybe that should be in a trivia question somewhere).  I had seen HELLO DOLLY starring Merman months earlier, been hooked on the power of live theater, had to be convinced that there was no Merman recording of DOLLY, so I "settled" for the Channing recording, which I played over and over.  My dad and I were out doing something I can't remember (I was ten) and he said I heard Carol Channing is in a new show, why don't we try to get tickets?  Being a tiny bit of a bargain-hunter, Dad noticed several people outside the theater trying to get rid of tickets, and one of them had eighth row center, which he grabbed.  But the point was not the play itself, a multi-part sex farce that I was too young to fully understand, but that my Dad had given his stamp of approval to my newly discovered love of theater, and started taking opportunities for the whole family to make such outings as often as possible.

Seeing THREEPENNY OPERA and HAPPY END in one season (1976-77) and being so excited by the possibilties of that kind of storytelling made me decide that I had to at least try to be creative someday.

Seeing BREAKING AWAY at 19 and just sitting in the movie theater, not leaving, watching it three times - I was about to enter a combined senior year/graduate study year in college, having been scared to go away and be out on my own for regular college.  I left that movie having decided that I needed to get out of my parents' house for law school.  That may not have been the intended message of the movie, but I somehow focused on the growth possibilities of getting out of one's parents' house for a while.

RE this week's trivia contest, I never would have known where to even start without the extra clue in this weekend's discussion.  I was sure the clue (something like think really big hit movie based on a really big hit musical) was a giveaway, at least for the main answer - I wonder if a lot of people figured out it was GREASE, but just didn't get the details.  The only other ones I could think of that fit that extra clue were SOUND OF MUSIC and (as a stretch) KING & I or FIDDLER.

Mildly intersting HHW trivia: Once again, as with the Columbo trivia week, Robert Armin's name came up on google as I followed a wrong path in googling for the trivia contest, trying to find out who was on the original GREASE tour, only it was an interview Robert did with Debbie (?) Gibson about the tour of the revival.

Good Morning.  I must endeavor to catch up.  Its a busy time in the land of real estate hence my E & T behavior.  We have no airconditioning at home and it is unbearably hit and humid this past week so we have been either floating in the pool or hanging out in the gazebo or going to air conditioned places.

Friday evening the Vixter and I went to the James Street Players in Babylon  to see  thier production of West Side Story.  The cast was all  15 - 19 year olds (except Anybodys who was 12 and the three adult characters, Krupke, Doc & the Detective) and the orchestra and the conductor were all high school and college kids so I wasn't expecting much but it is an airconditiolned vednue and the Vixter desperately wanted to see it...but oh my what a show!!

The singing the dancing the orchestra, the acting.... it was all wonderful.

The girl who played Maria, Kerriann Otano,a 19 year old from Riverhead, has been awarded a full scholarship to study opera in Italy and oh my what a wonderful voice.  She is going to be a star someday.

The Puerto Rican acccents were very well done and the Officer Krupke number absolutely brought down the house.... all together an evening well spent.

Good Morning!

Another good(?) night of sleep.  Hmm...  In any case...

Shows...
The first professional productions I remember my Mom taking me to was a touring production of The King & I somewhere in Connecticut, and then Fiddler On the Roof at the Warner Theatre in DC - it was with Topol, maybe... one of the "standard" Tevye's.

However, the show that truly got me hooked was a dinner theatre production of Sweeney Todd at Toby's Dinner Theatre in Columbia, MD.  Very well done, very inventive.

But it was seeing Sunday in the Park with George that made me see that it was worth the risk, all the "risk", to pursue a career in the arts, in music, in theatre - or a combination thereof.  And then seeing that show at during the Sondheim Celebration a few years ago, when soooo much was going on in my life at that time, just brought it all full circle.  -I had never cried during "Finishing the Hat" before, but I was bawling that night.

As for movies...
"Like Water for Chocolate" and "Cinema Paradiso" - which happen to share a leading man, Marco Leonardi.  Just beautiful stories about love and the power of love - and art (cooking and movies) - that came into my life at the right time.  And although some people think the director's three-hour cut of 'Cinema Paradiso' didn't really help the movie, that extra hour really completed that world for me.

And as for books...
"The Bridge to Terabithia" by Katharine Paterson (sp?).  A haunting read - especially for "young adult" fiction.  And "Catcher in the Rye".

I have been asked, in a personal message, why der Brucer has been so long E&T.

It has nothing to do with the people here at this board, at least not directly.

During the last election cycle, he decided to absent himself in order to avoid creating or getting into any arguements over politics, as he felt that this was not the place for such arguements.  Since then, he has been getting enough feedback on what goes on here from me, or so he says.

It could be fun if he were to pull the same stunt he did at another board, where he posted under a pseudonym which he kept secret even from myself.  The problem there was that, once the secret was discovered, everyone there thought that I had been in cahoots with him from the beginning (I certainly had not), which ruined the whole escapade for both of us.  Amazing how bitter some people can get about having a joke pulled, how instead of seeing the humor they insist that they have been "victimized."

Ah, well.  Time to get ready for work.  Laters, as the saying goes.

I was way off on the trivia thing, too. I kept looking for a tour of HELLO, DOLLY! that involved Tommy Tune. Either way, the original tours of DOLLY! and GREASE! were before my time.  :D

TOD: I know I'll probably be mocked for this, but...THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is the show that hooked me on musical theatre. When we lived in England, my mom and dad took me to see Topol in FIDDLER and Richard Harris in CAMELOT and I slept through both of them (I could kick myself for that now), but hearing PHANTOM when I was 13 was what got me hooked. I've seen the show 9 times and it is still one of my favorites to sing, sing, sing. Is it the best show ever written? No...but it's very close to my heart. EVITA had a profound effect on me, too. CAROLINE, OR CHANGE moved me very much and SPELLING BEE opened my mind to a different way of creating characters that I hope will help me as an actor in the future. There's an off-B'way show called SLAVA'S SNOWSHOW that inspired me beyond belief. It's truly a breathtaking show if you go into with an open mind. I'm not big into clowning, but it sparked some sort of deep-down creativity that I hadn't experienced in a long time. Very inspirational and very funny. THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK and DOUBT really stirred up a lot of emotion for me, too.

I grew up watching movie musicals, so they definitely made an impact. "West Side Story," The Sound of Music" and "Fiddler" are my mom's favorites, so I saw them a lot. "Mary Poppins" and "The Wizard of Oz" make me feel like a kid again and "The Fox and the Hound" makes me weep every time I see it. Always up for a good cry, "Steel Magnolias" and "The Color Purple" get me every time, too. "9 to 5" makes me howl with laughter and "Guffman" gets my creative juices going, too. "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Misery" are my favorite scary movies - they both freak me out.

"The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" was the first book I can remember that ever made me cry because I didn't want it to end. I kept wondering what happened next... That had never happened to me before. I found myself getting angry, frustrated and elated over "Little Women" (How could so-and-so not end up with so-and-so!?! It's just not right!) and "Ethan Frome" moved me deeply. I couldn't put "Dracula" down, nor could I tear myself away from "The Color Purple."

TOD:

PIPPIN and my repeated attendings certainly effected my theatrical sensibilities.  I learnt from this show more than any other that the stage magic one can do is limited only by one's imagination.

As much as I love the show, I sometimes wonder how adversely I was effected by A CHORUS LINE.  I remember once leaving a performance quite depressed because I believed that I could never do that.  "God, I'm a dancer--a dancer dances."  But I never learned how...

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD taught me what it takes to be a man (I often think, what would Atticus do?)  And FIELD OF DREAMS taught me that it's never too late to make connections with my father, no matter how long he's been gone.

Greetings all.

Sad to say that my long weekends are dwindling down.  Just 2 more to go.

Congrats to DRs FJL and Hisaka on their new statuses.

Today's topic is indeed an interesting one:

I know I have told the story before of sitting at the St. James after the curtain came down on the Merman company of DOLLY! -- my first Broadway show -- and thinking/saying "I want to do that!," with the "that" being fairly nebulous.  Thus, ending up in theatre/arts administration.  FALSETTOS affected me deeply.  I am sure there are other stage works that also altered my life, but those are the two that come to mind first.

Cinematically -- and I have never been one for the movies -- I can say that FAME had a great affect on me.  (I know that's sort of cheesy to say, but it was the right time, the right place, and I was the right age.)  IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (and like DR DtMwondering what Atticus would do, I often find myself recalling the sign in Doc Gower's candy store/pharmacy:  "Ask Dad, He'll Know" that sends George scurrying to his father's office to ask what to do about the poisoned capsules.  "It's poison, I tell ya!  It's poison!  It's not often my dad to whom I turn, but I know it's OK to ask for advice.)

As far as books go, definitely CATCHER IN THE RYE, and perhaps even moreso, SEYMOUR, An Introduction.  To some degree, Willa Cather's PAUL'S CASE (though I think the PBS version had a greater affect on me).  And Ethan Mordden's BUDDIES trilogy.  The Mordden books, in essence, taught me how to be a gay man.

And Mary Tyler Moore.  I always wanted to be MTM/Mary Richards.

As I find myself careening toward 30, I have to take any chance I get to make myself feel young. :) And I don't tend to temp the Evil Eye. I generally give the Evil Eye, which may explain why I don't have a significant other....

Reading the book UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE and seeing the movie THE MIRACLE WORKER on ABC-TV convinced me that I did indeed want to be a teacher.

I'll bet I read Bel Kaufman's book twenty or thirty times, trying to savor every little crumb of humor and insight in what it is to be a first year teacher surrounded by students of all kinds and teacher as eccentric and unusual as their students.

And every bit of it was accurate once I became a teacher and went through my first year. I was a "floater" (no permanent classroom) my first year, too, due to having an extremely overcrowded school, just like Sylvia Barrett was in the book (Sandy Dennis had her own room in the film version).

Has it been common practice in the past for the  free theatre in Central Park to sell tickets to the free Shakespeare in the Park productions?

I received an email urging me to become a "sponsor" for  $100 and in return I would receive one reserved seat...  are they not simply selling the seats for $100 each?

I really did like it very much indeed. Lithgow and Butz made a great duo, and it was all very smoothly done. Ran like a dream.

I am glad I was NOT a Tony voter because these shows all had such strong attributes, and I can see why the Tonys were spread around a bit this season. There were a lot of good things out there worthy of awards consideration.

Speaking od Scoundrels... I purchased a set of very good orchestra seatsfor my parents  (at a knockdown internet price) for the Wednesday matiness July 27 and then was very worried that they were being sold so cheaply because the "A" team was all planning vacations....but my folks said that the show was spectacular and there were no substitutions.

To combine two topics - aging and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS - am I the only one who didn't find it particularly hilarious when Norbert yelled out "GOUT" as something he was hoping to get?  The young whippersnappers (am I an old fart or what?) on another message board seem to think that's the most hilarious lyric in the world.

I'm much happier somehow waddling towards 50 than I was careening towards 30.  But my 30's were for the most part a wonderful time, much better than my 20's.

Vixmom: It is my understanding that while you do not pay for the tickets, you do have to have a ticket to get in. I'm assuming that if you pay the $100 donation fee, they have a reserved spot for you and all the rest of the seats are first-come, first-served.

I can't wait to turn 30, actually. My 20's have been a bit lack-lustred, though I will say that I certainly thought I'd be further along in my career by this point. That is to say I thought I'd HAVE a career at this point! I wanted to be on Broadway by 30. That may still happen...I have 1 1/2 years to work on it.

Big Brother 6 Spoilage:

DR Jennifer:  I thought I'd recommend reading the entire transcript at the Canoe site, but I find that John Powelll really glosses over a lot of what goes on.

In this case, here is what transpired:

Two days ago, Ivette was nominated for eviction to replace James.  She was the designated "pawn" so far as anyone knew (although last night, she said she got scared when she heard Howie's reason for putting her up...and Howie had mumbled some words about Ivette being a huge threat as a strong player).

Yesterday, Ivette voiced some concerns to Maggie and others about how she felt things had changed.  First, she told Maggie that April and Jenn had spent a long time in the HOH room.  Ivette said April claimed she and Jenn had been playing chess, but Beau had told her they were in HOH.  Ivette, mad at April, was sure something sinister was going on.

What happened two nights ago was that April (mad at Ivette) and Jenn (who loves to be included in things sinister) went to the HOH room.  While there, they played chess.  But also while there, April proposed the possibility of voting off Ivette rather than Sarah.  She alleged that James and Ivette had a pact of their own and would be Howie's downfall.  She said she felt Maggie might be receptive to voting out Ivette, as well. She was full of vitriol (you know how she stirs herself up) and by the end of the discussion they had all agreed to vote for Ivette.  Howie left the room to tell James about the plan.

Yesterday, however, Ivette was acting like she was doomed and insinuating that April had made a new deal with "the bad guys."  Jenn -- little miss stab-you-in-the-back -- couldn't handle having a secret and spilled her guts to Maggie...couching everything in terms of making the idea sound like Howie's group's idea and soft-pedaling everything to ensure Maggie didn't turn on her.  Later, she and April had a long conversation during which Jenn poured out some pent-up anger against April for perpetuating a "rumor" about something that either did or did not happen to Jenn in college (I never got the full story on that one).

Maggie brought her folks together and everyone agreed they needed to stick together.  Later, April and Jenn broke the news to Howie and Rachel and Janelle about how they had never "promised" anything and how they needed to stay true to their word about "this week".

So...true to form...April stirred up stuff and made an offer she had to retract, and mostly because of Jenn who also offered to switch votes (again) and retracted (again).  I hate, loathe and despise them both and sincerely hope they both go on the block next week.

Howie had vowed to expose April's and Jenn's plan to Maggie and the rest of their alliance if they backed out, but apparently has changed his mind.

He or Rachel needs to talk to Maggie (who thinks they don't know she knows) and tell them what happened, what was proposed, and how it was proposed in Maggie's name, as well.

DR Jennifer:

On a side note about BB6, Maggie had some ugly moments yesterday.  First, she was talking with someone outside.  Rachel approached and was about to sit down and Maggie held up her arm and asked Rachel to give her (and Jenn) a few minutes.

In a later conversation with someone else, her simple request had evolved into a some huge gesture of disgust toward Rachel and she was claiming Rachel was constantly planting herself in places where she could spy and overhear Maggie's conversations.

I can't help feel Maggie is somewhat paranoid.  And Rachel wasn't doing anything different from anyone else.

How about how old other people think you are?

Story 1:

When the Vixter was in 2nd grade ( 5 years ago come September) Vixdad & I  went to meet the teacher night and the 21/22 year old student teacher was there too...she said how pleased she was to be meeting the Vixter's GRANDparents!!! ::)

Wednesday is Sr Citizens get 15% off day at Kohls... the 3 elderly ladies ahead of me on line all got their 15 % off.

When I was being checked out I jokingly said to the teeange cashier.. "Don't forget my senior citizen discount!!"

and she replied "Oh no,  I already put it in there."

I wasn't sure if I should be happy about saving money or sad that I looked  at least 62 to that girl!!

One thing I have been meaning to talk about had to do with watching those Tony tapes at the Museum of TV & Radio.

The thing I noticed the most about the old shows is how dignified the audience was during the entire show. There was no shouting, hooting, or even applause as the names of nominees were read, and I thought the entire thing was just SO classy.

What entire transcript?

At the bottom of the Canoe page where you read what is currently happening, there is a button that reads "Today's Transcript"...it's actually the last couple of days and includes everything up to the last entry.  Push the button and the transcript comes up.

It's what gets archived after three days or so.

The Vixter and I, on the other hand, agree with you... we couldn't put it down.   One reviewer said the first ten chapters could have been completely done away with... I found the early stuff some of the most intriguing items in the book...

RE: TOD. Influential movies and books and theatre.

Movies:  The Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies started me down a film and literary path that led me where I am today.

A little film I saw when I was twelve was THE LIGHT THAT FAILED.  It taught me that it was right for the hero to die in the end.

GUNGA DIN & THE MARK OF ZORRO stoked my appetite for adventure movies.

I remember my brother and I, when were we about eleven and twelve respectively, watching THE SEARCHERS over and over when it played about nine times over the summer.  We were aficianados long before all the auteurs jumped on the band wagon years 15-20 years later.

BOOKS: SHE by H. Rider Haggard. I first read it when I was twelve.  It's my favourite book.  I read it about every five years.  It stirs very deep waters. I have about thirty variant editions of this one book.

I've already mentioned what TARZAN started...in this case, a life-long book-collecting habit now represented by a library of about six thousand books.

In my forties, I discovered the dark historical novels of Henry Treece.  He's become one of my literary gods, right up there with Rider Haggard.

THEATRE:  I remember going to see HOSTILE WITNESS in the theatre with Ray Milland when I was sixteen or so.  This was a big deal.  Somewhere around the same time, I had heard MAN OF LA MANCHA on the radio and took it upon myself to go see it.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE:  Seeing terrific actors speak my lines on my first films, SIGN OF FOUR & HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, was thrilling.  Seeing a large billboard of PSYCHO III on the Sunset Strip with my name emblazoned on it made me run out, get a camera, and take pictures of it.

TOD

Well, as I have mentioned many times in the past, my Mother started taking my sister and me to see the big spring musical each year at Tacoma Little Theatre when we first moved to town in the spring of 1955 (Song of Norway, that year).  That experience, along with my own acting debut in Hans Christian Anderson the same year, turned me towards a lifetime in the theater.  That love affair was reinforced by seeing my first professionally-produced play The Crucible, and musical Once Upon a Mattress.

I know that a lot of people at this site might be offended by this comment, but seeing the Off-Broadway production of Boys in the Band had an extremely negative on me as an eighteen year old college student on the verge of coming out of the closet.  I was shocked and horrified by the cast of characters who all seemed to me, at the time; to be depressed, bitter, or emotionally unstable people.  I cam back from New York determined to do anything I could to avoid that lifestyle.  In fact, I became engaged to a woman soon after that trip.  Now, in all fairness, I have never read or seen that play or movie since the time in New York.  Perhaps now, I would view the characters differently, but it was one of the most horrible experiences of my young life.

I had the reverse reaction when I first saw the TV-film of That Certain Summer in 1972.   After a lifetime of stereotypical gay characters in films, here were two honest-to-goodness MEN (Hal Holbrook and Martin Sheen) who were in love with each other.  There was probably just as much angst for the characters as for those in Band, but all I remember from the film was the honesty of those two performances.

With no Charley's Aunt rehearsal on Thursday, Ann and I will be making a trip up to Seattle to see the pre-Broadway production of Princesses, starring the WSMA, Brent Barrett.

In the more immediate future, we're thrilled to have Boston Legal coming back to the ABC lineup tonight.  Funny, funny show, IMHO.  First network offering to interest us in the slightest since May's season finales.

You might want to check out the song demos for Princesses (http://www.fifthavenuetheatre.org/princesses.shtml), DR JED

Biug disappointment today. One of the shows I forget to have recorded was last Friday's MONK ("Mr. Monk Gets Drunk" was the episode title). I noticed last night that USA was rerunning the show during the early morning hours, so I set the DVR to record it. Instead of it, I got an episode from last season, "Mr. Monk and the Election." Was this the episode that USA showed last week (a rerun) or did USA decide to rerun this older episode last night instead of showing the one from last Friday night? HELP!

I still have a SMALLVILLE from last week I want to watch, and then I can tackle some movies I recorded last week: THE FORGOTTEN, TONY ROME, and poor old 21 GRAMS that's been sitting on the hard drive for almost a month.

Also managed to get to Sunday's episode of THE COMEBACK with another funny, exasperating encounter with Lisa Kudrow's Valerie Cherish. Again, the show has really grown on me since the opening episode. I hope HBO gives it another season of shows to develop the character even more.

DR Ron Pulliam....

My brother and I may be exceedingly similar, but we are still two different people.   ;) (almost a Frank Loesser reference...)

But speaking of my brother, former DR Jay, we decided recently that we needed to do something special to celebrate the 75th birthday of our mother.

For various reasons, including the fact that one of her dear friends from Brooklyn moved out there, we are taking her to Vegas for a long weekend in October.  Jay will drive her out from the County of Orange, and I will fly out of Rochester's International Airport to meet them.  ORiginally, I was going to fly out on Saturday though they were not going to arrive until Sunday, and depart on Tuesday.  But while working with Orbitz, which had given me a lovely price on a Saturday night, which in conjunction with my flight, made it actually cheaper to fly out and take an extra night in the hotel.  But when I got to purchasing, Orbitz let me know that the price they quoted wasn't truly the price I would be paying for Saturday night.  I was not happy to find that out.

So, 2 nights at the hotel instead of one.  But the Jet Blue sale that is going on right now (til tomorrow, I think) has some very nice deals....

I fought the mundane-stay-at-home un-inspired urge and went for a 4 mile power walk.  I'm not at the office eating cold fried chicken from Safeway and it's very yummy.

DR Elmore - a local theatre company- 42nd Street Moon in San Francisco who specializes in semi-staged rare or lost musicals has "Golden Apple" as part of their season this year.  I'll be sure and check it out when it plays in early 2006.

DR Jason - can one still rent the 1970's orchestrations for "Company" when licensing the show?  I know the standard set is the revival.  Any clew?

The Midwest was great. I mean, good people out there. I hate  that every time I go, more of what I remember as farmland or woods has been built on by lousy McMansion subdivisions, but I guess that's the way of the world these days.

I attended the Lake County Fair, the Fair of my youth, and enjoyed, yes, delightful corn on the cob, and an elephant ear.

Rummaging through my mom's garage, I found her old Playbills for NO STRINGS and CAMELOT from a visit she made out here as a young lady.

Okay, that is HYPERBOLE, but tell me if this happens to anyone else... You may remember I was a little sick when I left. I was a little congested on the trip. You need to buy "Ear-planes" before your next air trip.  The Vixter & I both suffer terribly from the change in cabin pressure and this wonderful invention usually prevents  the pain, discomfort and followup  deafnesss..

Topic of the Day -- I can't say that any film, play or book changed my life but some were very influential. First of all, I grew up on Astaire/Rogers films and on all those MGM musicals. The films definitely influenced my choreography, as I used a lot of props as the jumping off point for many of my dances. I don't remember which film it was that I saw this in but, when a boy in my grammar school kissed me on the cheek, I hauled off and slapped him across the face--BECAUSE I SAW IT IN A MOVIE! It's no doubt that children learn by imitation, and I'm convinced that there would be less violence in the real world if the reel world wasn't so graphic in their depictions (fat chance of turning this around, especially since the impressionable can now watch films over and over again on video).

JRand54 -- Regarding your Allison Hayes [Cheesecake] Picture of the Month: When Teresa Wright passed on, I did some research on the net and found this excerpt from her Hollywood contract:

The aforementioned Teresa Wright shall not be required to pose for photographs in a bathing suit unless she is in the water. Neither may she be photographed running on the beach with her hair flying in the wind. Nor may she pose in any of the following situations: In shorts, playing with a cocker spaniel; digging in a garden; whipping up a meal; attired in firecrackers and holding skyrockets for the Fourth of July; looking insinuatingly at a turkey for Thanksgiving; wearing a bunny cap with long ears for Easter; twinkling on prop snow in a skiing outfit while a fan blows her scarf; assuming an athletic stance while pretending to hit something with a bow and arrow...

MattH -- I, too, agree that those earlier Tony Award shows were classier. Credit has to be given to Alexander Cohen and Hildy Parks, the husband and wife team who produced and wrote them.

Re: Kevin Spiritas -- Kevin will be the featured performer at the 2005-2006 Cabaret Series at the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier College on February 25, 2006. Cabaret West is a co-sponsor of the series. I don't know if BK mentioned this or not, but Kevin was Hugh Jackman's standby in "The Boy From Oz." He played Dr. Craig Wesley on "Days of Our Lives" for 7-1/2 years and made his Broadway debut in "A Chorus Line." His got his film break in "Friday the 13th VII."

Club Cabaret at The Shannon Center has three more performances left if any of you are in the area  With table seating on the stage, the ticket includes a free beverage and cheese plate. The remaining shows are: Scott Dreier on August 12 in "It's Standard Time." Scott has tons of musical theatre experience in California in lead roles. Besides standards and Broadway, he will also do a special tribute to Stephen Sondheim in honor of his 75th birthday. On August 13, Karen Benjamin & Alan Chapman will do two shows: At 7:30, it's "Movie Music Madness" which will feature movie songs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. It'll be part cabaret, part sing-along and part game show as the audience will get a chance to compete for prizes answering questions about the music, writers and films. At the 10:30 show, they will do "Obscene and Not Heard," a collection of racy and politically in-correct songs by Alan and others. If you're easily offended, skip the show! Here's where it'll be http://www.shannoncenter.org (http://www.shannoncenter.org) OR, for more, see the CabWest website at http://www.cabaretwest.org (http://www.cabaretwest.org).

Well, I took the cats to the vet today. It was a good news/bad news type of thing.  Callie who was bordering on death last winter now has a clean bill of health. That was very exciting because they didn't think she would survive.

Nilla, on the other hand has apparently broken a tooth and has a big abscess in his mouth. OUCH!  I only noticed that he wasn't eating as much. He doesn't act like it hurts.  He goes in for teeth cleaning and probably extraction of the offending tooth on Friday morning.    At least it appears that this is fixable, so I'm concerned, but not terribly so

Yes, it is, but as the show hasn't been shown at all since March (and ABC never aired a single rerun of it during the season), I'm still looking forward to seeing it tonight.  Reruns of this are far more appealing to me than 95% of the first-run stuff on TV the past couple months.  The new season starts September 27th, which I am greatly looking forward to.

Apparently, Donna has not been reading this site, or she would know that all those things were mentioned, and that I, in fact, put together Mr. Spirtas' show and directed it.  So, she will be getting both of us in Feb.

Now, opinions needed section:

In Japan, they do these wonderfully cool things called mini LP packaging.  They are slightly bigger than jewel case packages (instead of 4x4 they are basically 5 1/4 x 5 1/4).  These releases look exactly like what their name implies - miniature LP albums.  I really love them, and I'm thinking of trying to bring this style of packaging to Kritzerland.  I think if I were to do this, we would, as always, see a host of other specialty labels suddenly imitating us as if they'd thought of it themselves.  For cast albums, for example, we would do a gatefold mini LP - just like the cast albums of Subways, or  Sound of Music or Hello, Dolly! on LP.  The interior two pages of the gatefold would have lots of photos.  The back of the jacket would have track listing and maybe credits.  Then, inside the sleeve would be a single double-sided page which fold open and is, in essence, eight panels of text, even though it's just like a folded piece of paper, so in essence you'd get eight pages of text.

What do you all think of this idea?

I visited our pressing plant today and showed them the packaging and our gal there was completely blown away by it and will be talking to her printers tomorrow to see how much they think it will cost them to do it.  If it's the same price (she actually thinks it may be LESS expensive, but we shall see) or even a few pennies more, I may just try to do it.  But, I'd like some opinions.  They'd be much easier to ship, no broken jewel cases or hubs ever, and I could conceivably lower the shipping costs by seventy-five cents.

Wow!  That's pretty darned snazzy!

Thanks, DR George.  I've been driving fairly staid Buicks for about 10 years and decided that it was time for something a little more sporty.

I have two Ella Fitzgerald CDs that are like this:  Ella's "Live in Berlin (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004U8V7/qid=1123631387/sr=1-11/ref=sr_1_11/002-7701208-5864855?v=glance&s=music)" album and Ella and Louis Armstrong sing Porgy and Bess (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004U8VA/qid%3D1123631629/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-7701208-5864855).

I love these! ;D They are so cool!  When I bought them several years ago, I got them at Tower Records in Seattle and their jazz section had a gazillion of them.  It was very difficult trying to pick which ones to get because I had very little money at the time.  Still don't, but... ::)  Anyway, Verve was the company that released most of them.  They were all imports from Japan but still comparably priced to regular CDs.  I say YES!

Only downside I can see would be storage, as they wouldn't fit in standard CD racks.  Beyond that, however, sounds great!

From what I can find, orchestrations for the Goodspeed production were done by Douglas Besterman, but looks like Bruce Coughlin may have taken over since then.

Good Evening!

Just a few posts/repsonses, and then I'm off to a cast party!  YEAH!!

DR Jason mentioned Gregory Jbara - While boarding the subway a few weeks ago at Columbus Circle, Gregory was getting on the train with his son - very adorable.  He had apparently just come from one of the Broadway Softball League games since he was in his uniform.

Man, did he look good in that uniform!

And what, pray tell, was on the menu at this dinner theater?

Yes, they did have meat pies on the menu during the run of the show.  Cornish pasties to be more precise.

It was a buffet set up, and it was fun watching people's reaction when someone would take one out of the warming tray.. "Umm.. Do you really want to eat that?"

Speaking of baseball uniforms, as we were leaving Barrymore's, Frederick Weller of TAKE ME OUT passed us.  Greg Jbara is such a neat guy.  When he did the Carnegie Hall Recital Hall VERY WARM FOR MAY, his encore of "All the Things You Are" was one of the great moments in musical theatre.

BK - Those mini-LPs are great.  And you can get them in the same size as a standard jewel-case.  A lot of pop/rock albums have been coming in that format - since it's very eco-friendly packaging too.  And from I understand, it actually is slightly cheaper to manufacture them since there are less "cuts" involved when putting together the booklet.  It's just one piece of paper, folded.

Yes, the CD fits in the sleeve, just like an LP.  Grant and I have seen some of the ones they've done in the US, which are 5x5, but we don't like them as much, and the material being used isn't as good as the Japan ones, plus we love the way they glue the sections together on the Japan ones, which is exactly the same way they did the LPs.  I'm glad the reaction is positive.  And I had CD cases built for me and they do fit in those - it's only another inch and a half.  They also take up much less room and, as has been stated, they look great.  So, let's hope we get a positive response from the pressing plant, and the first album I may try it on might just be the upcoming cast album, should the folks be amenable to trying something different.

I just had a lovely chat with Mr. Terry Trotter.  Oh, what stories he told me - stories of recent telephonic calls - so interesting.  In any case, it looks like we're going to do a Trotter album this year for release early next year - all ballads, all Broadway - we'd talked about doing something like that before, and it seems like the time is right for it.  First we talked about doing ballads from the great American songbook, but it's easier to sell Broadway, especially if we get a couple of the newer shows represented.

The Vixter and I, on the other hand, agree with you... we couldn't put it down.   One reviewer said the first ten chapters could have been completely done away with... I found the early stuff some of the most intriguing items in the book...

Frightening thought Matthew - lol. May as well have Trotter plays Puccini et al and get it right.

(BTW I am going to see "Sunset Boulevard" on Friday week. I'm hoping the non top heavy version works better. I still don't think the show can ever really work without "Close ups". I'm hoping for great performances by Judi Conneli and David Campbell. (I've seen Buckley and also Hugh Jackman in different productions.) Jackman was a wonderful Norma (or was that Peter Allen?)

I think it is a fab idea and you should go for it!!

BK, I like the idea of the 5 by 5 covers, too.  Once the entire recording industry follows your lead, it will lead to better cover art.

I am sure some of the material from Hairspray will work.

Always Look On the Bright Side of Life from Spamalot

Sweet Charity and Fiddler on the Roof has been done in the past but probably both shows will be gone by the time the cd comes out

Sunday from Sunday in the Park With George.

However I would love to hear the following overtures done in the Trotter style. I think these are three of the best.

Gypsy, Funny Girl and Merrily We Roll Along

The Wiz and A Chorus Line are both coming back to Broadway and they both could use a more complete recording of the score.

Watched AFTER THE THIN MAN tonight. It seemed grainier in the close-ups than ANOTHER THIN MAN, and there also seemed to be more problems with the print, more dark scratches in several places than in the third film.

However, the contrast and sharpness are still better than any previous video incarnation I've seen, so I'm still glad to have it.

Someone should have done a commentary on this one. So many famous folks in the cast besides the two stars: Jimmy Stewart, Sam Levene, Jessie Ralph, Elissa Landi, George Zucco, Joseph Calleia, Penny Singleton (before she changed her name). There had to be some interesting backstage stuff to report.

An interesting episode of RESCUE ME tonight, too. The fire chief in the show has a gay son that he's had a hard time accepting. The chief's wife decided to have a birthday party for the son's lover, and the fire chief MADE all the firemen at the station attend the party so he wouldn't be the only straight man there. That hoary old belief that gay men will rape any straight man because he's irrisistible was put to rest during the show, and the chief began a slight move toward acknowledging that his son's happiness was more important than his own disappointment in not having had a straight son. Some good moments.

DR Stuart - I took my Mom to Vegas for her 75th birthday as well.  Got expensive tickets to Celine Dion and "O" but the show she loved best was the drag show AN EVENING AT LA CAGE at the Riviera, which we got at the half-price booth.

I personally loved JUBILEE at Bally's, reasonably priced and spectacular design, but there was the perverse thrill of seeing Sondheim songs (Beautiful Girls, All i Need Is The Girl) performed while topless showgirls and showboys were parading around.

OK, the hour is late, and I need to be heading downstairs to bed.

Good night, all.

Good Evening!

Back from the pizza and dance party... Lots of fun.  Lots of scandalous gossip was shared, and I even took some semi-scandalous pictures too!  -which I may or may not post.  We shall see...

However, during the course of the evening, a bunch of us gathered around a laptop and took a look-see at this here site.  I had been telling the creative team that I had posted the pics on the web, and they wanted to know where, so...

They all appreciated the comments and compliments, and I think I may have recruited a few more "acolytes" - or at least lurkers.

And DR elmore - Curtis loved seeing the pic of you and Jane that he took last year.

We all ended up taking a break mid-party to head over to the Mainstage.  One of the main backers for this project was attending On the Razzle tonight, and Roger Rees thought it would be a nice gesture if everyone who was a direct beneficiary of her generosity stopped by to say Hi and Thank You at intermission.  So that's what we did.

We also learned at that time, that Roger would like to put together a "compact" presentation of both leapFROG projects - there's one play and one musical - and present them in New York City sometime shortly after WTF comes to a close.  -Fingers crossed.

And tonight was also the first time that I officially met Mr. Rees.  When I introduced myself, he asked, "Who are you?"  I said, "I'm Jose.  I'm the musical director."

"Oh, you're the one who came in.  Come here and let me give you a hug."

:)

-Now I'm just trying to figure out if there's anyway I can list that on my resume.

;)

Now to catch up a bit...

Age - I've said it before here... Turning 30 was wonderful for me.  So many things came together for me in my 30th year.  And, more importantly, I finally let go of all of that angst from my 20s.  It was great feeling mature - even though I may not always act mature.  ;)

I'll be 37 in two weeks...  And I'm already looking forward to turning 40!

Zing a Little Zong.

I love the MINI Lp packaging - and said so when it was mentioned in the notes several days ago!

Interesting Teresa Wright information DRDONNA.....

...but it doesn't say anything about being photographed while standing on her head!

DR vixmom - As DR Jennifer noted, the Public has always offered a premium for their Sponsors - corporate and otherwise.  It's basically like getting the DVD of "Riverdance" from PBS when you make of pledge of $120 - or whatever it is in your neck of the woods.  Normally, you'd have to stand in line for the tickets, and then stand in line again to get into the Delacorte.  By becoming a sponsor, you receive a ticket and seating in a "reserved" area.  No lines.  And since The Public is a non-profit, you also get a nice tax deduction should you wish to take it.

You've all been so busy.  I'll  have a lot of catching up to do.  I, too, have been busy-- but in rather mundane ways.

As far as movies that had a huge impact on my life, practically any movie I saw as a kid had an impact in that it allowed me to escape into a wonderful dream world and intorduced me to many of the things I still love.

As for Terry Trotter ideas/suggestions...

"How Could I Ever Know" from The Secret Garden - god knows, I can hardly stomach it anymore at auditions. ;)

"Will He Like Me?" from She Loves Me

"Lay Down Your Head" from Violet

"Stop, Time" and "Stars" from Big

"Take Me As I Am" from Jekyll & Hyde - Is that the right title?  Hmm...  I've just always liked the opening hook of that song.

"The Colors of My Life" from Barnum

"I Know the Truth" from Aida - This would definitely work in a "cool jazz" vein.

"Breeze on the Water" and "I Walk With You" from The Full Monty

"Ordinary Kind Of Woman" from Pippin

"Simply", "A Slight Neurotic" and "When You're Waiting for Love" from What If? - a medley.  :)

-I think that's enough for now.

How about "Since You Stayed Here" from Brownstone?  Liz Callaway recorded it twice (once produced by BK), but I think it would be very nice as an instrumental.

DR Jose - What was the date of those pix of Curtis and Tom?  I want to look back and check whether I said anything unseemly about them.  :)

Another suggestion for the new Terry Trotter CD:  "With Every Breath I Take" from City of Angels.  This is one of my favorite songs.

Or what about the instrumental "L.A. Blues" also from City of Angels.  Does it have to be a vocal song?

Or "Never Met A Man I Didn't Like" from The Will Rogers Follies.  I'd say that that has lots of jazz improvising possibilities.

And to conclude this evening's Cy Coleman suggestions (from me, anyway):  "Real Live Girl" from Little Me.

Now going from Martin Short in Little Me (the revival) to Martin Short in The Goodbye Girl (the original), how about "Paula (An Improvised Love Song)?"

"Joey, Joey, Joey" from The Most Happy Fella

"Sleepy Man" from The Robber Bridegroom

And now that we've reached Page 10...

And since I just remembered I have a production meeting at 8:15AM(?!?!?) - With everyone's crazy schedules up here, there was no other time to schedule one...

Goodnight.

All excellent suggestions.  It will be very hard to narrow down our lists, I'm thinking.  Ironically, the first thing out of my mouth suggestion-wise was With Every Breath I Take.  I think we'll also probably do Here's That Rainy Day, just because we both love it to pieces.
