Well, you've read the notes, you've been thoroughly confused and alternately enlightened by the notes and now it is time for you to post until the confused and alternately enlightened cows come home.

Hi Guys,

Sorry I wasn’t here last night.

I’ll catch up on all of the posts tonight.  I got an e-mail to clean my message box out.  I did.

Hello DRs Ben and Michael.

Snow and hail here in Melbourne! We only have snow about once a  decade.

Will you be recording a cast album of What If?

Do any of the theaters that you have looked at allow an open run or they only allow a booking for a specific time?

Do you have a pictures you can post from Kevin's cabaret show?

What was his song list?

Any plans to record a solo album with him?

Any chance of re-releasing The Music of Bruce Kimmel and updating it with other original songs?

Had a very nice, quiet dinner last night with Joey, Tom (Rodzinkski) and Larry. We went to Barrymore's. I had a bowl of soup and a spinach salad, Joey had the Club Sandwich, Larry had a cheeseburger and fries and Tom had a bowl of soup. Poor Tom was feeling discombobulated after the flight. As he mentioned, his ears were plugged and he had a hard time hearing (plus he got in so late). Otherwise, it was a nice evening and I got to meet another DR. Always a pleasure. I think Joey will have a great time in New York. He saw Hairspray last night and his dance card is full for his time in New York.

A pre-event to the Grand Get Together in October!

Question for BK:  When I upload a CD to myPod, iTunes does an automatic grab for track information from a website called Gracenote CDDB.  How does this info initially get out there?  Did you or someone with Kritzerland contact Gracenote and supply the track info for the new releases?  Did an anonymous someone out there inadvertently upload the info because he or she was the first one to play the CD through iTunes?  Just curious.

Looking forward to the Last Starfighter recording!

Regarding a new Trotter cd, I'd say that "Is It Really Me?" from 110 IN THE SHADE is a must. . .

and now, as part of my b'day celebration, a good friend took me to see TOMMY at the Pittsburgh CLO.  I snapped a picture of one of BK's dear friends (well, actually my camera took the picture, with my friend Cindy pushing the button):

Good morning, all!  DRjoey is off and about the City, and I am catching up on some small work at my desk.  I've got a few calls to make, a meeting to schedule, and some cruise ship work to do by the beginning of next week for a singer who's going out in early September.

I have at the present no questions, no answers, and no milk for my coffee!  Garn!

Dr Dan - I put ice cream in my tea at a restaurant when they didn't bring us any milk - everyone looked at me in horror (just the people at my table, I mean, not the whole restaurant), and I've never done it again.  Was doing that in public that an etiquette breach I wasn't aware of, I wonder?

DR George - no relation to Tina Landau or Martin Landau.

But I did once - otherwise inexplicably - get put in prime seats for a sold out show and couldn't figure it out, until we realized that Tina Landau was the director.  I guess the box office in looking over the names on the ticket-buyers list figured I had the same last name, so I MIGHT be a relative, so they must have decided not to take a chance and put us in phenomenal seats.  :)

Greetings all....

Thank you to the folks who made Vegas show suggestions.  My brother, former DR Jay, and I have had difficulty trying to decide what to see while we are there.  Oh, for the days of Steve & Eydie at the Desert Inn and Sinatra at the Sands.  Or maybe Totie Fields at the Sahara.

Nice new wheels, DR Ginny!

BB6:  I gotta say that after reading some of the reports on this here site, I wasn't really surprised at anything I saw last night.  I will say however -- and I don't think that this is any sort of a spoiler -- that the dynamics of James and Sarah's relationship are interesting, to say the least.  I find her quite the whiner.  And if April didn't truly bother me before, she does now.

And so help me G-d if Kayser isn't the one voted back in.......

No questions for BK right now.  Maybe later.

DR Michael Shayne - Thanks for posting the art work and picture.

Since I promised I'd give him credit if that photo was used, that particular photo was taken by a fine young man who goes by the name Connor Dickie.

I agree Stuart, Sarah and James' reletionship seems one sided to me and I do believe that Sarah will have quite an eye opener once they are both out of the house.

I do so hope to see Kaysar walk back into the BB6 house! But I am very curious to know why Rachel and Howie voted him out, rather then Janelle. I am sure it was a difficult choice for them, but I would love to know the reason.

DR FJL: Congrats on getting the show recorded!! And I can say I saw it in its original New York run. ;)

I got a call from my Greek last night. Actually, two calls and a message. Unfortunately, the message was in regard to the Greek's ex and how the Greek misses the ex. But a couple of friendly "I love you's" were exchanged, which was loverly, though I can't allow myself to read too much into them. We talked for about 1 1/2 hours - until the wee hours of the morning. Sadly, I'm all twitterpaited and the Greek's thinking of someone else. That's not fair! :(

None that I can think of.  Was the ice cream from your own dish, or from another diner's plate?  Did you plop in a scoop if ice cream?  Was it a hoity-toity serving of tea?  Otherwise, I see no problem at all.

Now I'm thinking how delish a cup of tea with a spoonful of mint ice cream would be.

DRD-T-M, it would be very tasty IF I had some ice cream, but I've gone to the market, had my  coffee and a bit to eat, had one of several phone conversations, and I'm ready write some parts fro the GOLDEN APPLE Exit Music.

DRJose, I loved your hug story about Roger Rees; I remember him fondly from my Drama Book Shop days.  I last spoke to him in Du-Pars, when I was recording Jason Graae's albym with Dear Frtiend BK.

I do have a question for BK:

When you were recording the cast album for BELLS ARE RINGING, was there any discussion about the show not being the smash some of us expected it to be? Were the stars disappointed in its reception? I can imagine the mood at the recording of something like HAIRSPRAY when you've opened to raves, but what about something like BELLS ARE RINGING that only got middling reviews?

BK - Great news about The Last Starfighter!  We were all talking about it this past weekend - the production, not the recording - since Mizer and Moore know Fred and Skip.  Maybe you could make it a Dual Disc release and present a video clip of the picnic table-cum-starfighter!

Since I've looked into this due to my own curiosity...

Gracenote receives it's information from a couple of sources - official and unofficial.  They will draw info from record company press releases, databases, published info, etc.  Some of it is drawn from the Muze database, Amazon.com, and other online retailers.  However, some information is also provided by people who access the site.  When the first Sondheim Sings volume came out, there was no "official" information provided at the time, and some people submitted the information.  -Which is why sometimes some records will have multiple choices/answers - a bunch of classical stuff is this way due to changing record labels, different packaging in different companies, etc.

I believe Windows Media Player accesses another database for it's info, Muze possibly.

Hope that answers your question.

Re: last night's Big Brother and a bit of LIVE FEED TALK.

It was a good show.  And they pretty much kept up-to-date on all the goings on. Although they left out the part about April/Jen changing their mind on voting out Ivette.

On the show they showed that April/Jen went to Howie/Janelle/Rachel and made a deal to vote out Ivette instead of Sarah (since james took himself off the block).   But they DID NOT show april/jen blabbing to maggie and then changing their mind.

I really hope that there is some way that Ivette can go. I haven't read today's live feed updates. So hopefully something interesting happened last night.

Btw, i'm curious to know what you guys think of the veto competition.

Let me explain for those who didn't see the show.  There are 6 competitors (james, sarah, jen, ivette, howie, rachel). Each have 10 candies that they must put in the other competitors' pinatas.  But they cannot know what the others have done.  The winner is the closest to 20 without going over. And you have to give candies to at least 2 people.

Now nobody wanted james to get it (or sarah i guess).  But he won.  Now my first thought would have been not to put any in their pinatas. And my second thought would be to put 9 in james'.  WEll it was such a hodge podge. Everyone was second guessing themselves. And it turned out that only one of the 4 (ivette) put 9 in james' pinata.

What would you guys have done?

I read Mr. Shaiman's rebuttal and I applaud it. I've always found MJL to be pretentious and I find it to be in bad taste to 'dis' another composer's work in such a public forum. There's just no call for that.

I've just spend the last hour "discussing" the layout of the Brady Family House with a co-worker. After a 40+ minute "discussion" that ultimately included 3 more of my co-workers, I finally put an end to it. I told my co-worker that if this was just about being right about something that is ultimately pretty stupid, then fine - he's right and that's the end of the conversation. That shut him up.

I'm getting ballsy in my old age. ;)

And I agree, April is driving me crazy.

However, I don't find Sarah and James relationship to be "interesting". In what way? He is sly as a fox. But he seems genuinely loving to her.  HE has not gone behind her back or tried to screw her over.

DR elmore - Thanks for the DR Joey report.  Do you have plans to take him to Artie's and/or Beard Papa?

:)

Well, we've been to Ollie's for some good Chinese cuisine, but he's off on his own today.  I know he's got dinner plans, and I don't know if I'll see him until after THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.  Artie's and Beard Papa's may have to wait for your food tour with him when he's back again.   I think tomorrow we may hit Academy for used CDs and try to catch a show; he definitely will, but I wouldn't mind seeing something.

As to the Shaiman-LaChiusa battle, it was started by a petty, ugly article by LaChius in the new OPERA NEWS called "The Great Gray Way," in which LaChiusa calls HAIRSPRAY and THE PRODUCERS faux musicals, puts down their creators' intentions and generally, out of jealousy I believe, kicks the shows and their writerts for not being the artiste LaChiusa is.  Having seen several LaChiusa shows, I'd rather see THE PRODUCERS or HAIRSPRAY any day.  Marc has written a justifiably angy, but very funny and sharp rebuttal.  Marc Shaiman is someone I'm quite fond of and I say good for Marc!

Well both kaysar and janelle were/are on howie and rachel's team.  I guess they knew their votes would not count, and they decided to go with the majority. Most people in BB don't like to stir the pot!

First, about "eye-openers", I can't wait for the "Eric disciples" to see the footage we saw of Eric's doings.  And I would love to be a fly on the wall when they hear how ridiculous the other houseguests (i.e., the "outcasts") found their slavish devotion to the short, overmuscled Mussolini-wannabe.

As for the voting when Kaysar left.  Recall that James was initially on the block with Kaysar and he was the "intended" target of Maggie's group.  When James won the Golden Veto, they had to put up another "outcast" and the obvious choice was Janelle since she was Kaysar's partner (they adopted one another after their partners left).  Janelle's nomination was Maggie's signal that she wanted Kaysar to be gone.  Since the votes were there to evict Kaysar, I think the others decided to cast their votes against Kaysar to support Janelle.  Only James voted for Janelle to leave.

I, too, cannot wait for Kaysar to walk through those doors.

And I have my fingers tightly crossed that James or Janelle (or Kaysar, if he's eligible) wins HOH Thursday night.

I don't know who I want to see on the block the most...Maggie or April, Jenn or Ivette.  As long as they go up and out.

Basically, it would seem that MJL put down everyone who has a show currently running on B'way, with the exception of pal Adam Guettel. He even found a way to put down the work of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori, though by his own admission, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE was the closest thing he could find to a "real" musical.

Sorry, LaChiusa - I'd rather sit through HAIRSPRAY or MAMMA MIA! any day over MARIE CHRISTINE. Maybe that makes me a theatrical layman - I don't know.

I have to admit I was surprised by the dour tone of LaChuisa's piece. Honestly, the Broadway community is a fairly small entity in the great scheme of things, and when one member makes such a public spectacle of himself, it seems to jolt the theater community to its core.

Are any of the theater big shots defending LaChuisa?

DR Matt H - From your mouth to someone powerful's ears.

Interestingly, and accidentally, the timing happens to fall on the day that the NY Times (in a review of that one-man Star Wars show) proclaimed that "The geek audience has become highly sought after by Broadway producers."  Is there any evidence of this, I wonder?  Our hero isn't necessarily written geeky, but I wouldn't object if there's any way LAST STARFIGHTER can get into any "highly sought after" category.  :)

Thanks, Larry, for the link and the rebuttal.

I visited a few other articles and what seems clear is that MJLC and Opera News seem to be having a love affair.

I know some opera lovers who find the "world" of opera lovers quite tasking and opinionated and very narrowminded when it comes to other forms of music.

That they've even embraced someone from the "musical the-ay-ter" seems odd, although MJLC's works don't seem to have met with much sucess "commercially."

What If: Complicated issue - but we're working on it.

Most waiver theaters don't do open-ended runs, only a couple.  The problem with the Hudson when we did What If was that they'd already booked a show in prior to us booking the theater, so we were screwed.  When we talked to them about our play, the went to Mr. Daniel Henning, who is doing La Chiusa's The Wild Party and told him we wanted the theater, and asked him to extend or not.  He kept them (and us) waiting beyond the date he should have and then, as I predicted, took the extension.  Well, I've seen Mr. La Chiusa's Wild Party.  These people are doing a six show week, and will now be in there for twelve weeks or so - good luck.  Although, LA sometimes embraces these pedantic and pretentious shows that NY loathes, so who knows what will happen.

I don't know if anyone was taking photographs of Kevin's show.  I'll ask him.

I'll have to post his song list later, if I can remember it.

Yes, we'll be doing a live recording of his act before the end of the year.

I doubt I'll rerelease The Music of Bruce Kimmel, since so much of it would have to be new.

I'm always amazed at how iTunes grabs the info for CDs - not sure how they do it.

The production of Bells was really mediocre, but the session was a ton of fun, and there certainly was no "pall" over it, as I would never allow that.  The producers were there, as was the director, so the attitude was all very positive.  And interestingly, the CD would lead you to believe that the show was much better than it was on stage - I've gotten that comment many times.

My question for ASK BK day - imagine if you will....

You are a director for 20th Century-Fox and you are doing a BIG western, CinemaScope and StereoPHONIC Sound - and the script calls for a dance sequence featuring the leading lady.  Unfortunately the leading lady is Miss Susan Hayward who is NOT known for her solo dancing.  What do you do?  Count on the editor, shoot everything but her feet, or ..... well what do you do?

Two reactions to the LaCuisa/Shaiman "debate:"

First, that LaCuisa chose to publish his volly in the Opera News is interesting, and odd.  It's not where I'd expect someone to write about musicals.

Second, while LaC writes praises of Mordden's book, he seems to have missed one of Mordden's regular points, the difference between musical comedies and musical plays.  It is the latter that is not doing well on Broadway at the moment.  Musical comedy is doing very well indeed.

I just read the "opera" article and I am actually sort of surprised that so many people are going so crazy over it.  Do i agree that shows like HAIRSPRAY are faux-musicals (and that to be a real musical you need to be thought provoking). No.  But that doesn't mean that what was written wasn't an interesting point of view and well thought out.

Everybody digs a public catfight.

I think Shaiman's responses were funny and biting. LaC does make some okay points, I mean many of us have complained about the lack of chance-taking shows out there. Although any show takes a chance by virtue of the money invested in it, even if it is based on a Disney cartoon, a "Full House" episode, or the songs of the Doobie Brothers.

The problem is in the orthodoxy espoused by LaC, as if there is only one right way to do a musical or to BE a musical. There is no right or wrong, only what works and what doesn't. And that is highly subjective.

Most of the first half of the 20th Century featured shows that hung on barely-existing plots with songs thrown in. It evolved into plot and character-driven shows, and some would say it is "devolving" back towards the former. I personally don't dislike so-called jukebox musicals on principle. The question to me is if each one works or not. Is Broadway everything I want it to be right now? No. Neither is Cinema, and neither is pop music. But then I don't rule the world just yet.

Anyways, as LaC points out, it's all Jose's fault for wanting to get rich as a musician! :)

On The Shaiman/LaChiusa matter, I remember that Shaiman wrote a response to Fred Ebb as well for things Ebb said about HAIRSPRAY and the famous kiss on the Tonys.  Does anyone remember what Fred Ebb's harsh words about HAIRSPRAY and Shaiman and Wittman were?  I've been trying to find them on the internet and I can't seem to find the actual quotes.

I don't think it's fair to compare musical theatre to doctors, since their jobs involve saving lives.

I do see your point though.  Maybe a person should not criticize their entire profession.  However, I think that he has the right to say what he thinks of musical theatre.  And I don't think he  praised himself.

Obviously when names are named, then people's feelings get hurt.  I don't think that was the intention.

Anyhow it's not about agreeing or disagreeing with the points.  Like I said, I think that there are many kinds of musicals that are good.  But it is an interesting point to consider feel good musicals vs thought provoking ones.

FJL, I found this quote, don't know if it's complete or not

It was the kiss that rocked the Tonys. And pissed off Fred Ebb.

"I thought they made spectacle of themselves, frankly," the late Broadway legend grumbled to this publication in 2003, a month after Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, a couple for 25 years, celebrated their Tony win for Hairspray by kissing on national television. "Your bedroom is not the screen."

It comes from an interview with Marc Shaiman in a Gay publication after they won the Tony. Here is a link to the full interview.

DR Jennifer,

My impression of James is that he would sell Sarah down the river if it would help him in the game. Often when she says she loves him he seems unimpressed, and he constantly expects her to lose competitions and not do well at the game...he just does nothing to support her....as I see it.

Poor Fred!  He had no room to throw stones.

DR Jennifer,

My impression of James is that he would sell Sarah down the river if it would help him in the game. Often when she says she loves him he seems unimpressed, and he constantly expects her to lose competitions and not do well at the game...he just does nothing to support her....as I see it.

Wow, I totally don't see it this way.  Maybe people are getting a different impression by solely watching it on tv? (and not following the live feeds?)

I think james is viciously competitive. But I have never seen him anything but loving towards sarah.

They are not really my favorites.  And I agree though, she is bad at the game and at competitions. She is very passive.

So who are your favs? Mine are janelle and kaysar.  I just love her.  She is so smart and competitive.  But she is extremely trustworthy.  She doesn't gossip. And she doesn't go behind people's backs.  I just really like her!

I know Mr. Ebb is dead, but I've never understood the concept that it's perfectly acceptable and even encouraged for a straight couple or a husband and wife to kiss when one wins an award, but if a gay couple does, they are "shoving their sex lives down our throats" Umm, if that's the case, then I think the straight couple is doing the same thing.

Jennifer - please note that DR Elmore specifically mentioned a plastic surgeon and his/her artistic sensibilites. Except in rare cases, I don't think plastic surgeons actually save lives. They may save a person's mental health, but in a different sense, composers, lyricists, choreographers, directors and performers are all capable of that, as well.

For Mr. LaChuisa to go through and make comments, both generic and specific, about other writer's works, he is in effect implying that his work does not suffer from the foibles of his colleagues.

And honestly, I'm not sure there's any kind of intent other than hurtful, spiteful intent in that article. You do not call out the shortcomings of your colleagues works, naming them by name, point by point, if you do not intend to make a major point. By doing so, I think Mr. LaChuisa may find that he has alienated himself from the very community of which he claims to wish to be a part.

One has to ask, who is he to think he can point out what's wrong with what everyone else's writing? If he knows how to "save" musical theatre from immenent death and destruction, then perhaps he should busy himself with writing "real musicals" rather than scathing articles in Opera News.

And do you think that a plastic surgeon should write an AMA article, praising himself and naming colleagues he considers faux-surgeons or people whose work clearly fails to meet his artistic, if questionable, standards?

This is an interesting question. The guy set himself up for the "jealousy" japes. But anyone is allowed to criticize shows they don't like. We do it all the time. I thought BKLYN was a national disgrace, for instance. Wrongheaded and somewhat putrid from the word "go." I don't think I was jealous of it's creators, even though it ran a helluva lot longer than I would have thought possible.

But this guy, because he is himself a creator of some renown will take the heat for his comments. I think it's because it is one thing to criticize a show, another to criticize the heart and the intent of a show's creators. AND, the way he did it almost seemed to lay the blame for Broadway's supposed demise at the feet of a few successful shows and their creators. And it came from a tone of a voice on high, rather than merely one man's opinion.

Sorry DRs Jason and Elmore, I saw "surgeon". I must have blocked out the "plastic" part! :)  But I still think that plastic surgeons are medical professionals, who while not saving lives, have to be on the ball or people could die.

But as for the "artistic sensibilites", that is a whole other matter.  I guess i totally misread DR Elmore's comparison. Sorry!

I'm not sure about this point.

I think you make a very good point.  Although I tend to think he was just trying to be honest, rather than hurtful.

He did make some remarks like "no offense meant".

Well i'm sure you know that he is busy working on new musicals.

This is sort of odd, because I don't agree with some of what was said in the article.  But I'm just finding it hard to understand why everyone is so upset by what was written.  And for everyone to assume it was written with malicious intent.

Jennifer, that article is - to me, at least - the equivalent of Mr. Ned Beatty going to the New York Times and telling them that he thought that his co-stars were no-talent hacks. He said it in a "nice" way ("She is a sweetie, and yet she doesn't have a whole lot of tools. But she works very hard." and "He's gotten better all the time, but his is a different journey."), but it still came off as pompous and shameful.

How ironic that the shows JML has criticized as unworthy shows have kept a hundred people each employed for years on end. His own shows don't seem to have that ability. On that basis alone he should keep his mouth shut. Those shows, whether they meet his artistic sensibility or not, make profits that allow producers to invest in shows such as his that are riskier and less prone to make a profit.

Also finally got around to the QUEER AS FOLK SAY GOODBYE special that aired before the last episode on Sunday night. (I couldn't watch this special live because I was watching - and crying through - SIX FEET UNDER).

Made me a bit teary-eyed to hear them talk about what it meant to them to be a part of the show and sad to know it won't be back. Sharon Gless came right out and said that she wishes the show could have continued, but the relief it was over from folks like Scott Lowell and Gale Harrold was very obvious.

DR's Ben and Jason -  Thanks for the link to that article about Shaiman and Ebb.  Interesting reading.

Looking back, it was interesting watching the pattern as Shaiman started posting on All That Chat.  At first, everybody was only postive towards him, but after a while, one got the sense that people were sometimes baiting him a little bit.

Michael John LaChiusa also posted on All That Chat for a while under his own name.  He made a brief reappearance not too long ago when someone referred to "the three named writers like Sarah Jessica LaChiusa" and MichaelJohn just said that he wished he had her hair.  He apparently reads All That Chat because he's been known to write to some people who put their email addresses in their posts.  So I'm sure he was aware of the Shaiman response before Variety reported it.

Speaking of good stuff, DRMBarnum, I have to dig out GUMNAAM and show DRJoey the opening number.  That will put the fear of God into him!

DRJoey just called me; since this morning, he's walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, seen the Ground Zero site, caught the matinee of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, and more that I've forgotten.  He's meeting a friend for dinner and seeing LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.

Somethoughts from yesterday:

TCB remarked

Quote
I know that a lot of people at this site might be offended by this comment, but seeing the Off-Broadway production of Boys in the Band had an extremely negative on me as an eighteen year old college student on the verge of coming out of the closet.  I was shocked and horrified by the cast of characters who all seemed to me, at the time; to be depressed, bitter, or emotionally unstable people.  I cam back from New York determined to do anything I could to avoid that lifestyle.  In fact, I became engaged to a woman soon after that trip.  Now, in all fairness, I have never read or seen that play or movie since the time in New York.  Perhaps now, I would view the characters differently, but it was one of the most horrible experiences of my young life.

I can not resist some comments.

1. I thoroughly enjoyed "Boys in the Band" (film 1970), but I saw it as an already jaded adult who could recognize many of the caricatures from my own life (the bar-hopping bath-house crawler part, not the married family man with three kids part).

2. I can fully appreciate how TCB was repulsed. (I can see how "Boys in the Band" could drive one straight, but of course exposure to "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woofe" could drive you right back.

3. I'm not sure time has much improved the situation. What sane, sensible young man watching Queer as Folk would ever dare to come out of the closet?

4. For me, the scary This Could Happen To You film was "Advise and Consent", 10 years earlier - it really made a point to a young man just embarking on a Military career. "Fortune and Men's Eyes" (1971)" provided the incentive to avoid prison. The Ritz" (1976) came out after I had already enjoyed the NYC bath scene, and "Cruising" (1980) was a look back at my days night-crawling The City. I shudder to think what my reaction to those films would have been had I seen them in Junior High! Now , in my later years, it's easy to identify with films like "Jeffrey", "Philadelphia" and even "Love, Valor, Compassion".

5. It would be interesting to write a play with a 16 year-old male struggling with his sexual identity and a self assured 60 year old gay man with a long-time partner each reacting to the films mentioned above.

 Teasing Out Success (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/15/AR2005071500363.html)

Excerpt:

Quote
The studio is a semi-organized mess, with a bulletin board propped up on the floor outlining the new Martin Short project that Shaiman and Wittman are working on. It's a spoof of one-man shows called "If I'd Saved, I Wouldn't Be Here," and it's scheduled for Broadway this coming season.

They are also collaborating on a musical version of the Steven Spielberg film "Catch Me If You Can," for which Terrence McNally is writing the book. Shaiman is antsy to get started: "I'm dyin'," he says. After all, if he had his way, "I'd want to be just like Rodgers and Hammerstein were. You know, just writing shows one after another. I feel like I have 'em in me."

Evening folks!

Congrats to DR Ginny on the NEW vehicle!  It looks stylish.  May it carry you hither and yon in comfort and safety for many years to come.

Sorry I didn’t post last night.  I had a bit of shocker at the Dr’s office and just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to post about it.  In as few words as possible:  Another kidney stone.  Big one (my specialty)   ::).  Surgery.  When I return from the NY Gathering if it doesn’t hit sooner.  Joy.  Sigh.   :-\

The only good news is that I’ve been put on meds to prevent (operative word) kidney stones in the future.  It won’t help a bit with any already formed.

Anyway, I’ve been meaning to ask DR  Rodzinski how you like the new job?  I hope that it is much better for you then the last place.

As far as the Marc Shaiman/Hairspray thing, I’ll be the first person to say that I am not the most sophisticated person when it comes to the shows.  I only know when I like something or not.  I’m also too honest to tell someone I liked something if I didn’t.

When Hairspray came to the TBPAC, I totally enjoyed myself and judging from the reaction of the others in the audience, they were enjoying it as well.

Knowing that Mr. Shaiman posted on BWW, I PMed him and thanked him for a most enjoyable afternoon.  I would not have done that if I disliked the show in any way.  I could NOT have done that with either Ms. Saigon or Cats.  Mr. Shaiman kindly responded and told me he was glad that I had enjoyed it.  What more could someone ask of a musical?

Regarding the  “hairy eye candy”, I once told a friend that if I ever wanted to sleep with a rug, I’d buy one.  Of course, now Bear sleeps at the foot of my bed sooooo what can I say?   :D

I’m so glad to see DERBRUCER posting again!  You were missed.

If anything, I wonder if I drink to MUCH water and that's the problem.

The doctor made me promise to stop drinking  tea (sob!) except for green tea.  I only had one cup in the morning.  No coffee (which I never touched anyway) and no soda.  Sprite or 7 up are ok-- which is what I drink anyway when I drink a soda.

And he said whatever I was drinking as far a water goes, to double it.  Since water is my drink of choice execpt for the one cup of hot tea I had in the morning, I don't get it.

When my mom (who is from Germany) was growing up, she never ate corn.  Corn, she said, was cow food and people didn't eat cow food.  It wasn't until she had grown up, gotten married (to my dad) and moved to the States that she ate corn for the first time.  Wasn't that an interesting story? ;D

GOOD HEALTH VIBES TO DANISE.

I too suffer from kidney stones... think cranberry juice.

Better yet, drink some!

Sedona Labs (http://www.sedonalabs.com/news/HT041223.html) reports:

Quote
Cranberries have long been valued for their ability to help prevent and treat urinary tract infections, by binding to e.coli before it can attach to the bladder wall. Now, recent studies suggest that this same binding action may also promote gastrointestinal and oral health. It's ingredients also make urine more acidic, which impedes the formation of kidney stones.

Healthy Foods (http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=145) adds:

Quote
Prevention of Kidney Stone Formation
Cranberries contain quinic acid, an acidic compound that is unusual in that it is not broken down in the body but is excreted unchanged in the urine. The presence of quinic acid causes the urine to become just slightly acidic—a level of acidity that is, however, sufficient to prevent calcium and phosphate ions from joining to form insoluble stones. In patients who have had recurrent kidney stones, cranberry juice has been shown to reduce the amount of ionized calcium in their urine by more than 50%—a highly protective effect since in the U.S., 75-85% of kidney stones are composed of calcium salts.

In one recent study evaluating the effect of cranberry juice on kidney stone formation, study subjects were divided into two groups, one of which drank 2 cups of cranberry juice diluted with 6 cups water each day for 2 weeks, while the other group drank tap water for the same period. After a 2 week period in which neither group drank any cranberry juice, the groups were switched, so that those who had drunk cranberry juice drank only tap water, while those who had drunk tap water consumed 2 cups cranberry juice diluted with 6 cups tap water daily for an additional 2 weeks. In both groups, drinking cranberry juice was found to significantly and uniquely alter three key urinary risk factors for the better: oxalate and phosphate excretion decreased; citrate excretion increased; and the relative supersaturation of calcium oxalate was significantly lower.

In another trial that evaluated the influence of cranberry, plum and blackcurrant juice on urinary stone risk factors, cranberry juice decreased the urinary pH (made the urine more acidic), and increased the excretion of oxalic acid and the relative supersaturation for uric acid. The researchers concluded that cranberry juice could be useful in the treatment of brushite (calcium) and struvite (non-calcium) stones as well as urinary tract infection.

But,  USA (http://www.usaweekend.com/04_issues/040321/040321thinksmart.html) adds a caution:

Quote
Folklore: Cranberries prevent bladder infection.
Fact: Research says drinking 1 cup of cranberry juice three times a day for a year cut repeated urinary tract infections in women up to 50%. Concentrate tablets also work but may increase the risk of kidney stones, Stanford University researchers say.

When treating for bladder infections my Doc said to be sure to use the "pure" cranberry juice (Might have to go to a health foods store). The Ocean Spray stuff is just too weak to do the job.

A lady at work was giving Mango's from her tree away.  It was very sweet and good.  I'm going to try to grow a Mango tree from the seed.

I was wondering if you need two trees but I just found out that Mangos are monoecious and self-fertile, so a single tree will produce fruit without cross pollination.

I didn't get to tell you all about the sad fate of my four O'clocks.  You know they are building next door to us.  Well, they sprayed some kind of weed killer and it got into my four O'clocks.   They are dying.

I'm pretty upset but I bought new seeds off of E-bay and planted them in pots.  I'll baby them until the spring then replant.  I could have said something but I didn't want to cause a problem but if they spray that stuff again and kill my new plants I am going to give them an earful.

I planted the new seeds on July 30th and they are already starting to come up.  I only hope I get some of each of the colors I lost.

A dazed man walks into a bar on a hot summer day and says "Bartender! gimmie a drink, I'm so thirsty I could lick the sweat off a cow's balls!!! Before the man realizes where he is, he feels a firm grip on his ass and in a deep voice hears "Moo moo buckaroo!"

Let's answer the Getting Away With You question thusly - the first person to guess where and when I first heard the song, and who can give us some info on Jonathan Goldman, its author, will win a sparkling prize.

BK, is the Jonathan Goldman who wrote the song the same Jonathan Goldman from THIS (http://www.jonathangoldman.com/) website...Jonathan Goldman's Healing Sounds??

...And I have to wonder if the byline for Michael John LaChiusa's article in Opera New happened to include that his next musical, See What I Want To See, is slated to open at The Public this fall.  It was originally produced up here at Williamstown last summer under it's original title of R Shomon which is based on the Japanese writings of Ryonsuke Akutagawa... Which in turn was also the inspiration for the Kurosawa film "Rashomon".

Hmmm...  So Mr. LaChiusa is basing his musical on pre-existing material... Hmm...

Maybe there was no byline then stating his upcoming projects.

;)

Will the recording of the Last Starfighter be a new recording or the demo that was recorded?

If it is the last do you have to get permission from Actor's Equity to release it.

Different Jonathan Goldman.

The Last Starfighter was recorded at the time of the show - and wasn't intended, at that time, for release.  However, all details to make it releasable have been taken care of, hence, the release.

Okay, sleuths, we've moved on to Together Again.  We need to locate Gracie Moore Poletti (the former Deborah Maradzadeh) - SAG should have her, Rick Waln (last heard from in CT or NJ - he hasn't responded to e-mails sent to the three accounts I had, hence he doesn't have those accounts anymore).  Jeff Maxwell (SAG ought to have him, too).  I've contacted Penny Peyser and Deborah Tilton and Marsha Kramer, and will be contacting Joan Ryan (then Vigman).  Need contact info on Udana Power, too, again probably SAG.

To work you sleuths.

Back home (again) in Indiana, I finally got to check out a haul of LPs my mom got for me from an aunt's sister. First, the condition of the records is fantastic. Sadly, there was a lot of great jazz I gave to my best pal, because I couldn't bring it all home with me. I know he'll make a good home for them.

Now, some of what I brought home:

"April Love" soundtrack
Hugh O'Brian, TV's Wyatt Earp Sings
The Swinging Singing Del Vikings Record Session
The Louvin Brothers "Nearer My God to Thee"

"Make a Joyful Noise" by The Four Girls, who, oddly are FIVE girls: Jane Russell, Rhonda Fleming, Connie Haines, Beryl Davis and Della Russell

Buddy DeFranco plays Nelson Riddle's Cross Country Suite
Duke Ellington Festival Session
Ames Brothers Destination Moon
Accordian in Hi-Fi by Jo Ann Castle
Get on Board with Georgia Lee
It's Dark on Observatory Hill by the Honeydreamers

AND
"Love, Courtship, Romance and SEX" a spoken word LP by C. Sumner Wemp

I am now listening to Wayne King, "The Waltz King"

A program editor edits the content in the Playbills, in my case getting the material text and images on time from whatever theatre group, dance troupe, orchestra is using the space, editing copy, formatting it for Playbill, getting the files to production for printing. We have writers on staff who generate the online content and the generic content that shows up in all theatres.

Not to mention all the business they bring into not just NYC but other cities as well (as in touring and local productions).  Theater-goers have to eat, which brings in revenue.  They may be visiting the city where they go to the theater, which means more revenue in the form of hotel rooms.  Souveneers, taxis or cars being parked...just the start of a list.

I was taking a walk the other day, and this is what I saw...

*There actually a lot of construction going on here right now on the Williams College campus.  In fact, a couple of projects were started after I arrived.  There's enough work being done on the grounds, that to get from the music building to the admin office, you have to walk through the library since you can't walk around it any longer.  Well, you could, but then you would have to walk around the music building, the life sciences building and one of the dorms before you get to walk "around" the library.  -They're laying new water lines and fiber optic cables (it looks like), so there are lots trenches right now.

But, overall, the scenery is still quite beautiful.

And this is Goodrich Hall where we will be performing our show next week.  It's an old chapel.  With no A/C.  So we're all praying for cooler and less humid weather next week.

*And as I learned in the production meeting this morning, due to the fact that Goodrich Hall has stained-glass windows, we can not start our tech - at least the lighting portion - until 8:30 or when it gets dark.  Whichever comes first.  :-\

But it's a beautiful space.

I spent a wonderful few hours with HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE today.

First, I could not BELIEVE how fabulous this 1964 film looks. Not a mark, scratch, or speckle on the whole thing. It's as if it were filmed yesterday. I watched the whole thing in one magnificent gulp, and then restarted it to hear Glenn Erickson's commentary. Nice work (though with a mistake or two).

I could not be more inpressed with it. I just wish they could have unearthed some Joan Crawford footage and showed it to us. Even some stills with Joan which I HAVE seen would have been better than nothing.

It's almost 9:00 p.m. and I should probably go home (I'm still at work).  So, see ya laters, ally-gaters!

That was a great photograph on Saturday of Sammy Williams, Kevin Chamberlin, and David Engel, three of my very favorite performers.

Well... It's been a long day for me today, and tomorrow is our "early" day.  And tomorrow night is the first night of the second series of Late Night Cabarets.  So...

Goodnight.

Still haven't made a dent in those movies on the DVR including THE FORGOTTEN. Some of these days . . . . (a Sophie Tucker reference).

Did Van say anything about that memorable episode of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW he guest starred on? I've always loved "No Rice at My Wedding."

So that's what it takes to get der B back into posting!

I was going through yesterday's posts, picking up a few quotes and putting them on a Word sheet, including DR TCB's remarks about TBITB.  Der B insisted that I get away from the computer, so that we could take puppy pics before I headed in to work today.  (That's Snowball, the four-month-old Lab pup, in my arms in der B's post.  Oh, heck, let's repost it here!

(At least one of us is cute!)

So, while I'm off at work, der B reads what I've got in the Word doc, and decides he's got to have his say again!

And he's already back in fine form, doing his research!

I can't think of a better group of people for him to be hanging with.

The bad news is that der B will be absent again, for a day or two.  He's off with the grandlads, helping them survive a cubscout overnight campout.  Which means that I'll be all by my lonesome tomorrow night, with six (count 'em) six dogs crowding my bed.

His birthday, by the way, was something of a non-event.  He was off ladsitting again, and didn't get back home until late.  The good news was that I was just as late getting home from work.  The bad news was that we didn't get dinner on the table (roast leg of lamb) until after eleven.

The duck is still on order.  The conclusion of that adventure will come later.

Me, I want sushi for my birthday dinner.

Did DerBrucer's daughter and the grandlads remember his birthday?

DR Matt H made an interesting comment yesterday.
Quote
One thing I have been meaning to talk about had to do with watching those Tony tapes at the Museum of TV & Radio.

The thing I noticed the most about the old shows is how dignified the audience was during the entire show. There was no shouting, hooting, or even applause as the names of nominees were read, and I thought the entire thing was just SO classy.
I sincerely believe that the decision to move the show from a rotation of Broadway theaters to the Radio City Music Hall has hurt the Tonys.  RCMH is far too large for the event; the stage dwarfs any stage production intended for a Broadway stage, resulting in the performers having to scream out their performances to get any sense of being heard.  It also results in having far too large an audience able to get seats for the show, causing the lack of decorum that you note.

Rosie O'Donnell is to blame, I believe.  She insisted on locating the show there when she was it's host, and they haven't had the guts to lose the revenue the ticket sales bring in to leave the venue.  There are more tragic things that have happened over the years, of course, but it's still sad.

Der B's daughter and grandlads remembered the birthday, but just barely.  The lads fingerpainted a birthday card for him while they were at daycare, before der B picked them up.  He suspects his daughter remembered the date at the last moment, and alerted the daycare people.

While he said it didn't matter, I think it should have, at least to the lads.  It would have been fun for them if they could have planned some sort of celebration, of their own creation.

Back from dinner and MOBY with my friend. A good time was had by all.

I came home to a loverly gift on my kitchen table - a box full of CDs featuring the one and only me! I'm listening to myself and cringing at the flat pitches, but overall I sound pretty darn OK, which I'm not really prone to admit. "If I Loved You" and "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'" sound pretty nice, actually, while I'm ashamed of myself on some of "Just In Time." I haven't heard the Herman stuff yet...

Thank you, DRs Kerry and MusicGuy, for the discs. My friends and family thank you, too. :)

Last night, I went to the concert of Toshiko Akiyoshi with my mother and we had a lovely evening.  Ms. Akiyoshi was still gorgeous and powerful and did a glamorous performance.  I prefered "Memory" from last night.  After the concert she graciously had a little signing party for the audiences. Since I didn’t know that in advance, I left my camera at home. What a shame!

Wait...there are two - yes, count them TWO - recordings of "If I Loved You!" The one on the compilation disc is MUCH better than the one on the full concert disc. Thank you, boys, for distributing the one that I didn't break down and cry on...I appreciate that. ;)

Is a push needed to get to page 13?

I don't think I've ever seen 13 pages since I've been reading this board.

'13' is the name of one of Jason Robert Brown's new projects. It involves 13 13-year olds telling a story about a 13-year old Jewish boy who moves from Manhattan to the middle of Ohio. I have the demo and saw the reading, but I don't think he's pushing forward with it.
