The earthquake was registered 4 ( on the Japanese scale) in Tokyo and it was bigger and longer than the last one. In my home environment, a pendant lamp on a dining table was swinging slowly and widely like Viking Boat and I felt a slight seasickness with the big and long swing. And I noticed that I could not move or run from the position I was, in case something happened, while I was holding my big television set which was going to fall down from the TV stand.
Anyway, there's no big damage around my area, in Tokyo, even though other ares near the hypocenter were worse (but not extensive damage)

I'm back! I was away all day yesterday dealing with a medical procedure. I just finished reading yesterday's notes and posts and today's notes.
Nothing serious, just routine older adult issues. It involves the liquid diet I alluded to a few days ago and examing the internal lower section of my body with a tiny camera.
Not having had one of those procedures before I was unsure what to expect but I came away unscathed. I don't remember a thing after the doctor put the sedative in my arm. I woke up in the next room and it was 1pm! I had gone in at 11am, an hour late which is the grumble I have about the whole thing. I was told to be there at 9:30am for a 10am examination. Being the obsessively prompt person that I am, Anthony and I arrived at 9:30. We waited and read many magazines until about 10:55am when I was called in. The rest was easy. Anthony escorted me home and since I had not eaten anything but some jello, white grape juice and apple juice (plus that awful laxative you have to drink the day before) and was starving, we went to the diner and had lunch. We then came home and I finished reading Harry Potter Six. Oh, my. How will it all end. That's all I'll say (a Matthew reference!)
Anyway, I'm back for three days. On Friday we leave for Michigan for a quick family reunion. We will be outside of Detroit in Commerce Township. I have not seen some of these relatives since 1989 when my mother died. Many of them have never met Anthony. There will be a pool and food and lots of fun.
And now, back to work (since I took yesterday off I needs must catch up here as well).

BIG BROTHER 6 LIVE FEED SPOILERS.
Well i am just starting to catch up on canoe right now (DR Ron, i see you have some questions!). But I did read all about howie's tirade last night before i went to bed. It sounded fantastic. I also cannot stand april (i love the name yapril). They call ivette (evilette) and maggie (maggot). Perfect!
Anyhow I am thrilled that the outcasts are going to make the friendship's life hell (btw, change the "p" to "t" in friendship to see my fav new name for them :) ).
The funniest thing is that those people think they are liked. Yet i don't actually know (or have i read) anybody who can remotely stand them.

DR MattH, re: the fishtank question you asked about last night.
Although i do not watch the live feeds, i have read enough about them. There are certain events that they always go to live feeds. They are things that are not supposed to be seen (like diary room sessions). Also, whenever there is a veto meeting or a nomination ceremony (or i think usually food comp) they go to fish tanks. Then only after you find out who was nominated.
As for what happened last night, i didn't read the feeds yet. But i guess they felt things got too out of control and maybe BB needed to step in. But they don't usually go on fishtank when the good stuff is happening.

Last night was insane!!!! Janelle is acting totally out of control to try to get herself evicted rather than Kaysar. Howie is joining in. He has targeted April and Janelle seems to have targeted both Beau and April it's working on them right now. Ivette is the only one who really seems to see through it,a nd she just keeps saying "let's talk about it tomorrow".
Apparently BB had a pizza party and supplied everyone with alcohol to try to calm things down. That's what was going on during the fish tanks, but it certainly didn't work.
Beau and Janelle apparently pushed each other, but I doubt it will be enough violence to get either of them kicked off.
Finally BB just made them all go to bed with a lights out.

I went to bed wearing my CPAP mask. I woke up at about 5:30 this morning and it was on my nightstand, neatly put away, but the machine and humidfier were both still running. I do NOT remember taking that mask off. The velcro was undone and everything!
I put it back on and went back to sleep and had quite possibly one of the most enjoyable dreams I've had since I was 14. Yes, it was one of "those" dreams. Well, not one of THOSE dreams - I think I'm too old for that - but a dream for a more mature audience. I know it's unseemly to discuss that in mixed company, but I haven't had one of those dreams in so long, I just had to share. Perhaps it was all the talk about the Greek...
I really don't know from swing/big band music. I know I should, but we never got that far in Music History. I love the Andrews Sisters' sound, but I can only name a couple of their tunes. "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "In the Mood" make me very happy, but that's about the extent of my Big Band knowledge. If anyone would like to send me a CD with a brief history of Big Band/Swing music, I'd be happy to give it a listen. I love that period - I'm just not well-versed in that genre.
DR Hisaka - I'm so happy to hear that you're well and that there is minimal damage in your area. I just checked with my friend in the office whose entire family lives in Tokyo - he said he was on the phone with his mom when it happened! Everyone is fine, so that's good...
DR Ben: Glad to hear your -oscopy went well. My mom gets them every year (my grandfather had [and beat!] colon cancer back in the 80's, so we're all at risk), and she despises every minute leading up to it. She starts getting really irritable about a week before and is a totally different person after it's done. Glad it wasn't such a bad experience for you!
DR Jose: Glad rehearsal went well and that you get to sleep in today!

Oh i cannot wait to see what they show on tv from this howie/janelle/april/beau fiasco.
I think most everyone hates April/Jen/Maggie/Ivette. And most people seem to really like janelle/kaysar. But I am curious how most people view howie and janelle's antics. I didn't see them, but i think it sounds hilarious. And i think april got what she deserved. But i've noticed a few at canoe seem to think howie was acting immature and that this is just a game (and he was making it personal).
To me, the Friendship went overboard (with their lies and proclamations that they are good and honest), and i wanted to see someone give it to them good.
It seems maggie is acting the most sane of their group (with ivette and james).
I wonder if janelle will be voted out. I hope not. I REALLY like her.

Glenn Miller ranks at the very tip top of my swing/big band favorites. One of the first CDs I bought when I got my first CD player was a Best of Glenn Miller CD with 70 minutes of his greatest hits in their original recordings.
My favorite was and is "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." And I love the Dorothy Dandridge section that sometimes gets lopped off of other recordings.

When I was in the high school band, one of the things I always looked forward to was playing show music at the spring concert. The director would pick one or two Broadway musicals and we'd play selections from the shows. During my years we did BELLS ARE RINGING, GOLDEN BOY, THE MUSIC MAN, THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, WEST SIDE STORY (always my favorite), CAMELOT.
Anyway, for my senior year, I couldn't wait to see which shows he'd pick. To my utter devastation, he decided against show music that year and went with big band music instead. Even though my parents were both huge fans of big bands (it was their era after all), I knew from nothing about swing music. They didn't play many records by that time, and the ones they had were 78s which didn't sound too great on the stereo console we played our music on.
Anyway, despite my disappointment, we jumped into about 10 famous big band selections by Glenn Miller, the Dorseys, etc. and I loved every single one of them. My favorite of the ones we played was "Moonlight Serenade."

I am positive that I went to bed wearing the mask. 1000%. It was the last thing I did before I laid down and all the straps were done up nice and tight, but not too tight. In fact, I remembered thinking, ooh! This actually feels like it's just right tonight. The next thing I know, the mask is on the nightstand and I was very confused. I figured since I was up I should use the toilet and I came back to bed at which point I put the mask on again and went back to sleep.
I don't know how it happened. According to the literature I've been reading, it happens frequently when a patient is still adjusting to CPAP.
Maybe my roommate was playing a trick on me. Or maybe the Greek really did sneak into my room during the night and it wasn't just a dream that I was having! OH JOY! RAPTURE!

I know I would have been SORELY disappointed if he had been gone when we saw it. With Tim Curry, there were plenty of other folks to keep us occupied (and John Bolton with his goatee looked like a young, blonde Tim Curry), but Lithgow is SUCH a huge part of the show that his absence would be keenly felt.

As to swing music - I guess my real exposure to swing music was through the original cast album of SOPHISTICATED LADIES, which was one of my favorite albums for a long time - it was also the first show I ever paid full price to see twice. I also loved, and played over and over, the Tony Awards Show presentation of "Sing Sing Sing" from DANCIN' - that rendition was my favorite.

And I think the movie version is what has given new life to this doddering show. Folks want to see all that spectacle live. Same thing happened with CHICAGO when that movie came out. Gave it a new lease on life.

I see... Saying more about the Greek would be unseemly, as well. To my knowledge, and much to my dismay, the Greek thinks we are strictly platonic. As I'd rather have the Greek as a friend than not have the Greek at all, I pine away in silence.

Good morning, all. I am now at work and having my coffee.
That said, I spent most of last evening watching the BB6 live feeds and visiting chat rooms to see how people reacted.
"Big Brother 6" SPOILAGE:
I, too, missed the explosion. Yet it was relived for everyone all through the night with April repeating what he said over and over and over and over and over...and embellishing with each re-telling. As late as lights out, she said that Howie wouldn't let up on her husband and her dog (LIE!). He made his husband/doggy remarks only once, but he was relentless in his repeated demands that she pack her bags and leave immediately. This went on for quite a while.
April has lied like this once before. She voiced an objection to Michael's "handsiness" to Eric...and Eric got mad and talked to Michael and told him it was sexual abuse. After that, when Eric would ask her if he was still touching her (he never went near her again), April lied to Eric and told him Michael had not stopped and that enraged Eric even more.
April is a very unbalanced person. If anything negative comes of her tenure in BB6, it will be her own actions that are her undoing.
As for John Powell at CANOE_Jam, DR Jennifer is getting the same vibes I am from him. He's not happy with Howie...but then, he hasn't forgiven him for ruining the Alliance of 6. I, personally, think John is being a bit uptight about what went down last night, but he has said he needs to evaluate it some more.
It was clear to me, after Janelle and Beau had to be physically restrained from attacking one another, that Janelle, even though she was quite inebriated, was following a plan hatched by Howie. She and Howie settled in and laughed about the havoc they'd created in the house.
April has hopes BB will penalize or evict Janelle for her actions...ditto Howie. But as John Powell astutely points out, they do much worse in other BB shows around the world. Food and drink get thrown into the faces of other contestants during rows. As long as physical threats are not made, there are "no rules".
I'm very concerned that BB's solution to yesterday's rows was to throw alcohol and pizza at it. The row at the end of the evening was even worse than the row after nominations.
Everything I read in the BB chat room was "Go get 'em, Howie!" and "You tell him, Janelle"...and no one in the chat room admits to favoring JamBitch.
James is a piece of work. His talk with Maggie last night was so over-the-top-obvious...and to her credit, I could tell she saw straight through him.
"YApril", the sob sister supreme, has finally started getting a little payback for all the lying and character-assassinating and other evil little things she's been doing since entering the BB house.
It's not nearly enough...not yet.
To her credit, her "Why me?" whines are beginning to tick everyone off!

It's very clear that Janelle and Howie are doing this intentionally. Last night in the gold bedroom they said as much and were laughing about the row between Beau and Janelle right after it happened. They intend to keep it up. That was the conversation where Janelle said BB had threatened a penalty nomination and she laughed saying "I'm already nominated!"

And I'm on board with the Andrews Sisters, too. Loved all of their recordings, and I was lucky enough to see Patty and Maxene in OVER HERE! in the 1970s. I really loved that show.
I loved Over Here!, too! It was my first tryout musical (I saw it in Philly.) The terrific cast, the wonderful scenery and costumes, that great score and a full-sized big band. I couldn't wait to see it again (which I did, up in NY--it was also my first repeat show.)
The Sony Masterpieces CD release was awful. They substituted the original tracks with pop-sounding ones that must have been meant for radio play. I've since made my own CD copied from the original LP recording.

Ok, I am getting too addicted to this, LOL, but they are still fuming this morning. This is such a childish group of people, I know I shouldn't get so much enjoyment out of watching them torment each other, but they did sign up for this. I didn't realize Howie was missing some fingers until April taunted him with it. Although since Howies said her husband was fat and her dog was ugly, he may have been asking for something. LOL! Junior high all over again!!!
I may actually have to sign up for Real Player Plus for another month so I can see this through.

One Big Band number I forgot...Big Noise From Winnetka. I think it originated with Bob Crosby and his Orchestra, sort of as a jam session riff. Somebody whistling, another playing their drums sticks on a Bass fiddle. Don't quote me on that. I'll have to do more research.

The pressing plant turmoil has been dealt with and all is well. The Reader's Digest version is that my designer recommended the plant based on his long relationship with the lady who does the orders. She's been unhappy, and last week gave her notice. Since I'd just brought in the new masters, that made me very antsy - since I didn't know if she was taking them to the new place or what. That is indeed what's happening and they'll still meet my shipping date of before labor day. So, that's good. And, Guy and ATB will go over to the new plant as well, after we repress ATB this week.
Meanwhile, our new albums should be up for preorder by this evening and, if I get them in time, will ship a good two weeks before street date. There will be sound clips, etc.

Well, it's quite a beautiful day here, and I think I'm gonna go out and enjoy it for a while. I was hoping to get over to Mass MoCA today, but it turns out they're closed on Tuesdays. There is one that lives in Bryan’s building in Portland. Bryan feels bad for the teenage boy in the family who is referred to as the kid with the strange looking dog.

After completing JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG today, I then went to the special features. The Abby Mann-Maximilian Schell lovefest got a bit too congratulatory for me. A little better was Stanley Kramer's widow reminiscence about her husband.
Would rather have had a making-of documentary feature about the extraordinary cast and how they were able to get so many famous faces lined up for this monumental film. Perhaps it's talked about in the running commentary, but after taking two days to watch the movioe, I didn't feel like starting it over to listen to a commentary. Maybe another day.

I remember in the Monty Clift bios how poor his health was at that point (NUREMBERG). He had a difficult time with his speech, getting all the lines out, although his health contributed to the performance. He and Judy Garland were kindred spirits on the set.

I just ended up walking into "town" - basically down Rt. 2. About and mile and a half each way. I stopped into the Moonlight Diner for a late afternoon breakfast - corned beef hash and eggs - my usual 'test' breakfast for a diner. It was good, not great. And priced about a $1.00 more than it should have been.
And now the clouds have moved in and it smells like rain... So... I'm thinking a nap might be in order.

I finally got the smarts to have the DVR record an episode of 77 SUNSET STRIP from, what's it called now - American Life Channel.
Anyway, I haven't seen the show in decades, and I can't wait to see what it look like now.

"At Last" was used in the film. So was "Take Five" which seems a litle anachronistic to me. At least "Across the Universe" was not used in the film "proper".

Thanks MBarnum! I had a great trip. I spent a lot of time running around downtown San Jose helping out with the Jazz Festival (by the end, I think some of the board members thought I worked there :) ) I did get a little rest and relaxation by the pool. And best of all I got to celebrate my mom's birthday with her.

I remember in the Monty Clift bios how poor his health was at that point (NUREMBERG). He had a difficult time with his speech, getting all the lines out, although his health contributed to the performance. He and Judy Garland were kindred spirits on the set.

I should do something with my tin collection which is now scattered around the kitchen, all 42 of them. I went on line and discovered many of the tins are worth between $3 and $8. ;D
I have managed to separate 11 tins to be given away, 4 to save with my Christmas decorations and 10 to be used for mailing fudge or other goodies at the holidays, not that I expect to have a kitchen this year. Elmore that means I won’t be able to make any fudge. :(
I still have too many left to save. I will decide which ones to part with after the kitchen is completed.

Mr. Matt Cavenaugh (of Broadway's URBAN COWBOY) will be playing the lead male role in the show, which is fairly exciting.

I love big band and swing music. The Manhattan Transfer has recorded a lot of swing music over the years. A local theater group does a Christmas show every year that's set in the 1940s and they use period music...a lot of swing and big band songs, except that they don't really have a "big" band. It's a smallish (5-6 people) combo...but what talent!! ;D

We run four performances from Sept. 13-16, I think.
I don't know if Mr. Cavenaugh will be shirtless ONstage, but I'm willing to bet he will be BACKstage, which is where I'll be, taking lots of pictures...of the cast and crew, of course. For archival purposes.

DR Jose - Is there a show where Matt Cavenuagh spent most of the show shirtless? I had expected from the ads (or the abs in the ads) that in URBAN COWBOY he was going to be shirtless a large amount of the time, but by the time I saw it, it was about twenty seconds and that was it. There was more nudity in your pictures of the writers of TRIANGLE than on that stage at the Broadhurst. :)

To stop items opening in PREVIEW on a MAC, click on the item once, then go to "Get Info" under the FILE menu. In the window that opens, you will see a choice of what program is the default setting to open that file. Switch the setting to your preference. Beneath this, there is also the option of making all files of that type open in the program of your choice.

BERNICE BOBS HER MULLET is part of the Fashion Playfest, which is apparently a new festival. It's a play - no music - so I don't get to sing. Neither does Matt. :-\
And while I've lost my tan, the legs do look awfully good, don't they? ;) Actually, my calves are my best feature (DR Jose has seen them), so I'm sure I'll be stunning in black stockings and orthopedic shoes.

I miss him on ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I thnk the writers missed a golden opportunity to explore the character of the gay man he was playing on the show once his love affair with the psychotic murderous DA ended.
Of course, they actually didn't do much with the character of the wife the DA was cheating on either, but cheated-upon wives have been done to death on daytime TV. Spurned gay characters have not.

Maybe you didn't see the Hitchcock classic STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Kasey Rogers played Mrs. Guy Haines in the film, the one who's murdered by Robert Walker in that marvelous sequence reflected in her broken eyeglasses.

77 SUNSET STRIP held up very well. Sadly my favorite Roger Smith was only in two short scenes, but Efram and Edd did their usual smooth jobs, and though the mystery was very elementary, it was fun seeing all the Warner stable of character people and guest stars.
On this particular one, Ruta Lee and Connie Stevens were guest stars. The actress who goes up to Anne Baxter near the end of ALL ABOUT EVE at the award ceremony and says, "I'm so happy for you, Eve." was also in a silent walk-on bit at a party near the end. Love trying to spot these folks in all that TV work of the time. I'm sure they were just glad to have any work coming in.

RESCUE ME was an entertaining and funny (surprisingly for a show which has had so much angst this season) as it's ever been. I've really enjoyed watching it this season.

And I forgot to issue my usual Tuesday reminder about RENO 911! tonight. Still not too late for West Coast fans to watch. For East Coasters who forgot, Comedy Central does repeat it again in the early morning hours, but I'm not exactly when. Possibly midnight, but I'm not really sure.

For awhile on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, they had two murder plots going on. In one, we knew it was the psycho bisexual DA. In the other one (where a serial killer was at learge), the writers didn't immediately let us know WHO the killer was, though we knew it was someone in the cast. For some time, the finger of guilt pointed to the character Matt was playing. I was SO relieved when the killer turned out not to be his character at all.

Since I spent so much time today watching stuff recorded off the DVR, I must return to DVDs tomorrow. I still have one more THIN MAN to watch (plus the bonus disc in the set). I wanted to watch SECONDS. I still have ALEXANDER that my friend is loaning me, but I'm pretty sure that's going to have to keep until the weekend.
Kind of anxious to get started watching either MOONLIGHTING or McMILLIAN AND WIFE.

I have to confess I missed BB6 tonight. Our computer person is visiting our office from Des Moines this week and her car died so she called and I went to get her. We went to dinner and made arrangements for her to get her car fixed tomorrow. By the time I got home, BB6 was long over.
I did resubscribe to Real Super Pass. I'm watching the live feeds again. So much more fun than the show

On this particular one, Ruta Lee and Connie Stevens were guest stars. The actress who goes up to Anne Baxter near the end of ALL ABOUT EVE at the award ceremony and says, "I'm so happy for you, Eve." was also in a silent walk-on bit at a party near the end. Love trying to spot these folks in all that TV work of the time. I'm sure they were just glad to have any work coming in.

Yes, I liked it, too, but it was more a chiller than a mystery. Was it Vince Edwards who was the killer? That was a long time ago, and I saw it only the first time it aired.

Back from a lovely supper. Sadly, Kasey was feeling under the weather (recent surgery), so it was just her companion, the relative of Fish, and myself.
More Mac weirdness - it did one of its usual security updates then asked to restart the computer. I did this, as always. Only when it restarted it it completely lost my airport connection. I clicked on my network, and it still wouldn't work. I restarted again and this time I got a message saying it couldn't find airport in my "keychain" and did I want to change all my keychain items (irreversable). I don't have a clew as to that gobbledygook, so I clicked on "one time only" and then it found the airport and I got on the Internet. Does anyone know what in HELL this is all about, or must I call Apple in the morning?
