Title: WITH A SMILE AND A LAUGH AND A POTATO CHIP
Post by: bk on August 22, 2005, 12:09:42 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've seen the unwieldy title of the notes, we are now all feeling quite unwieldy, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just smiling and laughing and having a potato chip right now, and then they might, just might, come home.

My favorite eleven o'clock numbers:  Rose's Turn.  All of the Follies eleven o'clock numbers.  If He Walked Into My Life, What Kind of Fool Am I?

I don't know from eleven o'clock numbers.  My favourite duet is in a film called College Rhythm.  Bob Hope & Martha Raye sing How'd Ya Like To love Me?

BK, Diana Lynn wonderful, wonderful!

Do you have the Lloyd Nolan Mike Shayne that is a reworking of HIGH WINDOW, a Philip Marlowe novel, by Raymond Chandler. It's called TIME TO KILL and is supposed to be the best version of the novel.  Another was made called THE BRASHER DOUBLOON with George Montgomery as Marlowe.

There is also a Falcon movie with George Sanders that is a reworking of FAREWELL, MY LOVELY.

I'm with you, Bruce.  More and more, I'm just watching the movie and forgoing the extras.  In the modern ones, the actors and directors are usually telling lies that make them look brilliant and in the old ones we too often get guys regurgitating well-known facts I already knew or that I can readily find in my film library.  Some of the old ones from a history standpoint are good when they actually talk to people who were there (and aren't working the PR number anymore, but just remembering) or a really good historian like Rudy Behlmer who knows what he's talking about and may actually tell you something you didn't know.   Or they show you old home movies, shorts, cartoons, or screen tests or archival footage (Basil Rathbone trying on helmets for Robin Hood is fun!)

But I've always been a little leery of DVD extras.  The film ought to be enough.  The extras sometimes just lift the veil and destroy the magic.

Exactly - it's too much information, by too many people who don't deserve my attention.

Favorite duets: My Heart Is So Full Of You, If Momma Was Married, Marry the Man Today, The Grass Is Always Greener, You're Just In Love, I'm Past My Prime, Little Red Hat.

I would love to see Time to Kill, as I love The High Window most of all the Chandler books.  The Brasher Doubloon just doesn't cut it.

One duet that I love is "Better Than a Dream" from Bells Are Ringing.  I just got the DVD last week and that was the first thing that I watched...I just wanted to check the picture quality as compared to the laserdisc that I got last year.  Soooo much better than the laserdisc!  But I got so into it that I watched all of the bonus material ... speaking of. ;) There isn't much, but they have two songs that were filmed but cut, and an alternate view of a third song from the movie.  There are also interviews with Hal Lindon and Comden and Green and Frank Gorshin but no other irritating voice-over narration.  I think it's quite well done.

I also love the double duet from Follies, "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through."  And the sort of duet, "Mirror, Mirror/Who's That Woman," also from Follies. ;)

Good morning, all!  Today's a GOLDEN APPLE day, marking the band parts with the cuts (too many, in my opinion) for the concert at Bard this Sunday.  I must say, this whole concept of musicals in concert , which every producer sees differently,  drives me mad.  I go to hear the score and the arrangements, and I don't relish an attempt to semi- or fully-stage it.  I thought we'd be hearing all of the score this weekend, but, alas, no.  This means, as well, that I will never know how well my correcting of the parts went until I win the lottery and pay for a complete recording.

TOD:  it's too early to think!  I know I'm forgetting something major.
11 0'clock numbers:  The Music That Makes Me Dance
                              Rose's Turn
                              Time Heals Everything
I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face
                              Losing My Mind
                              I'm Going Back
                              Cabaret
What Did I Have That I Don't Have?

  Duets:   You're Just in Love
              Old-Fashioned Wedding
              If Mama Was Married
              Marry the Man Today
              You Were Dead, You Know
              It Would Have Been Wonderful
              I'm Past My Prime

Favorite eleven o'clock numbers:  I'm Going Back is by far my all-time favorite, but I also really like So Long Dearie from Hello Dolly and Gittel's big soliloquy (I have it on tape with no song list so I'm not sure of the name of the song) from Seesaw.

Favorite duets:  You're Nothing Without Me from City of Angels (fun David Zippel lyrics before he started writing about waxing :)  ), If Momma Was Married, My Best Girl

Re the title of today's notes, I have a favorite potato chip, too, but I guess no one asked about that.  Still, it's Pringles Sour Cream and Onion.

Hmm..I just realzied I've subconsiously been favoring Cy Coleman songs these days, in this list and last week's list about title songs and second-act openers.  Not intentional, but it somehow worked out that way.

And there's totally not one thing wrong about this, either.

For me, it depends on where I am emotionally when someone asks such questions.

For today, my favorite 11 o'clock number is:

"I'm Way Ahead" from "Seesaw"

Ah! To sleep in an air conditioned room - air conditioned by my own air conditioner...  And on a mattress that doesn't feel like they stuffed it with old costumes.  -Whatever that means.

But I'm up, and, I, too, have a date with some Golden Apple parts this afternoon - Thank you, again, DR elmore.

Favorite 11:00 numbers:

DITTO ;-)   Plus...
"Move On" - which I guess could be an 11:00 and duet combined.  -Unless you count "Lesson #8" as the 11:00 number in that show.
"The Last Midnight" from Into the Woods - which is more like an 10:45 number.
"I Know Where I've Been" (from Hairspray - Is that the right title?)
And, like BK, all the Follies' numbers for the leads in Follies.

Duets:
"Lily's Eye's" and "How Could I Ever Know?" from The Secret Garden.  Yes, "How Could I Ever Know?" starts off as a solo, but ends as a duet.
"Mountain/Terrace/(whatever) Duet", "I Know Him So Well" from Chess.
"The Tennis Song", "What You Don't Know About Women", and "You're Nothing Without Me" from City of Angels
"It's All for the Best" from Godspell
"It's Never That Easy/I've Been Here Before" from Closer Than Ever
"And What If We Had Loved Like That" from Baby - actually, go ahead and throw in "Two People in Love" and "With You" too from that score.
*OH! And to catch up from a previous day's topic, I really like the second act opener "The Ladies Singing Their Song".

And...

That's enough for now... For now.

;)

I GOT A VIRUS!

I thought you would want to know about this e-mail virus. Even the most advanced programs from Norton and McAfee cannot take care of this one.

It appears to affect those who were born prior to 1965.

Symptoms:

1.  Causes you to send the same e-mail twice.    Done that!

2.  Causes you to send a blank e-mail!     Done that too!

3.  Causes you to send e-mail to the wrong person.     Yep!

4.  Causes you to send it back to the person who sent it to you.      Who me?

5.  Causes you to forget to attach the attachment.    Well darn!

6.  Causes you to hit "SEND" before you've finished.    Oh no - not again!

7.  Causes you to hit "DELETE" instead of "SEND."     And I just hate that!

8.  Causes you to hit "SEND" when you should "DELETE."
Oh No!

IT IS CALLED THE "C-NILE VIRUS"

11:00 numbers: "Rose's Turn," "Lot's Wife" (Tonya Pinkins, though obviously having vocal difficulties every time I saw the show, sold that song like nobody's business), "The Last Midnight," "I'm Still Here," "Fable," "We Can Never Go Back to Before," "If He Walked Into My Life," "She's My Love," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" (does that count?), "You'll Never Walk Alone" (again, does that count? It's a bit early in the show...) "Where Is the Warmth?" and "Once More Before I Go," with which Hugh Jackman stopped the show every time I saw it.

Duets: Too many to list, but I'll try. "If I Loved You" (the whole scene), "Til There Was You," "Lily's Eyes," "How Could I Ever Know?," "For Good," "Suddenly, Seymour," "Not While I'm Around," which most people consider a solo, but it's really a duet, "A Little Priest," "Timeless to Me," "If Mama Was Married," "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)," "With So Little to Be Sure Of," "All the Wasted Time," "You're the Top," "Friendship," "Too Much In Love to Care," "Unworthy of Your Love," "I Have Dreamed," "I Believe My Own Eyes," "A Little Fall of Rain," "The Phantom of the Opera," which is great fun to sing, "The Song That Goes Like This," "Two Lost Souls," "A Man Doesn't Know What He Has (Until He Loses It)," "Hey There," "There Once Was A Man," and just to wrap things up, "The Grass Is Always Greener."

"Big Brother 6" -- No Spoilage

I've cancelled my subscription to the live feed.  While I enjoyed having it a couple of weeks ago, recent events in the house were blocked by the network/producers, and I can't fathom why they think I'd be willing to pay for that.

At any rate, the month I had it was free.  I much prefer the Canoe_Jam! transcripts...especially since the house is now at half-strength.  Who wants to listen to April yap-yap-yap all the time?  Not me.

Boy, you're right about that! The quality is night and day better on the DVD. I just wish Dean Martin hadn't been so lazy about learning the words to his songs, especially "I Met a Girl." That is one of the most embarrassing moments in movie musical history seeing him stumbling around through those throngs of people while his voice croons on the soundtrack, and his mouth on screen isn't even moving.

And on the matter of Lena Horme/Ava Gardner in SHOW BOAT. Does everyone recall that Ava Gardner got TOP billing in SHOW BOAT despite the brevity of her role in comparison to Kathryn Grayson's. She was definitely the biggest box-office name in the picture.

Arthur Freed had originally earmarked Julie for Judy Garland before she was fired by the studio after the ROYAL WEDDING debacle. I would love to have heard what Judy would have done with Julie's songs AND how she could have acted them with that uncanny mix of pathos and longing that she was a master of. To my knowledge, she never sang either of those numbers.

11 O'Clock numbers:

"Rose's Turn," obviously. "The Music That Makes Me Dance," obviously. "I'm Goin' Back," obviously.

"I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is one that isn't thought about much, but when you get an actor who can really sing it and put some depth of feeling into it, it can be very moving.

I'm sure there will be others I'll think of as the day goes along.

Other more standard duets: "If I loved You," "People Will Say We're in Love," "Every Day a Little Death," "No One Is Alone," "I Wanna Be Seen with You."

DR Ron - Thanks for the info on the name of the song from SEESAW.

In the stage OLIVER, "Oom-pah-pah" is the second-act opener, and actually is sung before Bill has his big "My Name" number.  The rethinking of "Oom-pah-pah" for the film version is a wonderful use of the song.

I meant to mention that other Tony Awards DVD release showing play excerpts taken from Tony shows. Don't know how much demand there will be to see play excerpts as unless you know the shows themselves, the excerpts out of context aren't usually all that interesting.

With the songs, you don't have to know the shows and their places within them to be entertained, but I'm not so sure about the plays.

I can't remember if anyone mentioned this, but James won the veto. Apparently he beat janelle by 4 seconds, and is admitting he cheated.  This sucks because i wanted her to win.

I subscribed at the start, and found that once discussions about strategy become interesting, the cameras would switch to idiotic chit chat in the hot tub, etc.

I cancelled within two days, but they offered me a free month.  That ends tomorrow.  But I went all weekend without watching...and after the show Saturday night, I find I'm just not interested in looking in on Beau, Maggie, April, Ivette and James any more.  Howie, Rachel and Janelle don't hold much "live" interest, either, since they've not really lived up to their promise.

DR Ron P.: Things are going well with Berniece. We've been sleeping fairly comfortably, though I end up taking her off around 7:15 every morning and going back to sleep for 45 minutes. That allows any creases and/or markings on my face to fade well before I have to face the public. ;)

I suppose I'm feeling better - I can't really tell now. I feel more rested, that's for certain - though I still find myself yawning throughout the day. Mostly superficial yawns - residual ones done more out of habit than necessity, I think - and nothing like the never-ending yawns of just two weeks ago. Before CPAP (B.C. in Biblical terms), I would yawn all day long and felt like I could never get enough oxygen into my system. No amount of yawning, regardless of intensity, could refresh me.  Now I yawn cause my body thinks it's supposed to.

The dark circles and bags under my eyes are starting to fade away. It's a slight change - most people claim they never even noticed them before - but it's something I notice when I look in the mirror. I just look more alert and refreshed. For the most part, I'm able to think clearer and quicker and I very rarely have the urge to fall asleep while I'm watching TV or riding the train. The big test will be to see if I can read more than one chapter of any given book without passing out. I think I'll need another week of treatment before I'm brave enough to try that one.

I feel like I've lost a little bit of weight, too. Now, whether I LOOK like I've lost it or whether I actually HAVE lost it is a whole other matter, but I feel a little less doughy. And my appetite is about half of what it was a couple of weeks ago. I don't have a constant urge to eat sugary things to keep me awake. That's nice.

Overall, I feel healthier, and in only two weeks! My body, I think, is unsure how to react to actually being rested. My muscles are tensing up in my shoulders, which may be related to the headgear for the mask, and my joints actually hurt if I sleep too long (I've never had that problem before! Too much sleep??), but overall I feel good. Thanks for asking!

Now if I could just get some OTHER aspects of my life to shape up...

DR Jason, I've been meaning to reply to your CPAP tales for some time...I'm truly glad that the machine is working so well for you.  I too was diagnosed with sleep apnea about a year or two ago...can't quite remember how long exactly.  I always suspected the results of the test were slightly inaccurate, due to the fact that I never actually fell asleep that night, but that's another story.  At any rate, they set me up with a CPAP machine and I attempted to use it.  I tried, I really really tried...but I just couldn't do it.  I'm a restless sleeper, I toss and turn, and being attached to the hose made moving almost impossible.  Often being stuffed up from allergies made being forced to breathe only through my nose a nightmare.  But mostly it was the feeling of my whole face and head being bound up.  How do you deal with it?  For about three months I tried, and every night was miserable.  I found myself taking it off at 3 or 4 every night, just to a get a few hours of actual sleep before getting up.  I finally gave up on the machine, and although I occasionally think about trying again, I feel much better without it.  DB Jed tells me I sleep like a baby, and although he admits I will occasionally emit a snore or two, he swears they are nothing major or offensive...of course he may be humoring me a bit  ;D

At any rate, I'm so glad it is working for you...best of luck to you and Berniece.  Hmmm...I never named my CPAP, maybe THAT was the problem...

DR Ann: I'm sorry your CPAP experience was an unpleasant one. I'm not a huge fan of having Berneice strapped to my face every night (no comments from the Peanut Gallery, please!), but somehow I've managed to be OK with it. The only time I'm really aware of the mask is when I try to roll over on my stomach, which one obviously can't do, or when the moisture from the humidifier is blown up my nose. I had to shake the mask out around 5:30 this morning to get rid of some of the condensation, so I'm going to have to adjust the humidifier's levels, but honestly, I'm "suitably compliant" to the machine. I think the more severe the apnea, the greater the chances that you'll adapt to the CPAP simply because any relief is better than none.

Luckily I've not yet had to deal with trying to use the machine with a stuffy nose. I dread that day, though I'm sure the sleep, extra oxygen and added moisture is doing my sinuses more good than I realize.

And regarding Jed and your snoring - remember, snoring alone does not sleep apnea make. Don't ask if you're snoring - ask if you stop breathing! THAT'S what you should worry about.

How's this for a potential name: Rodolfo. Or Antonio. Or Sven. Or Jed. :)

For the big brother watchers.  The Housecalls interview with Jennifer was so lame.  She was not there (kaysar was). And the questions coming from the fans were not live (they were read by marcellas).

Oh now Marcellas is saying some good stuff. He is saying how he could not do the interview how he wanted to (he wanted to call her out).  He is saying he despises her.  But now Gretchen is saying how they have to keep the integrity of the game. And they could not let her (jen) know how much the fans hate her.

Just finished listening to the Radio Show. It's a Putting It Together show and we get to hear all manner of cast recordings from The Boy Friend. Very nice!

May I say that my banner advertisement on my Yahoo page has been a notice for Quaker Oats Oatmeal Squares. It's making me hungry! I also ate two of them over the weekend. We usually have them around the house for emergency snacks and we took 4 of them on the plane with us. We flew Spirit Air (nice low-cost airline) and they have no complimentary snacks. You may purchase snacks on-line or bring something on the plane with you but it's just free beverages. We had our snack bars, two cheese sticks and an apple to eat on our flight to Detroit.

Anyway, I need to get back to work, but I wanted to pop in and say hello. Most of my favorites have already been mentioned. I will read the three days I missed over the next couple of days.

TTFN.

A delicious pumpkin cake with a cream cheese icing, made in New Hampshire (Grace Metallious' hometown)

A fresh peach cobbler

The Punk and I have returned from our quickly slapped together trip to Massachusetts and Vermont which turned out to be quite a fun adventure. Jose was great showing us around Williamstown and EVERYONE who talked to him said something along the lines of "You saved our ass."

On the downside, I can now blame Jose for destroying my diet. Note to those coming in Oct: If you hang around Jose, YOU WILL EAT A LOT.

Must catch up...

Remember I will be on the walking tour and those who don't want to eat much can share with me.  Remember I have this quirky habit of buying treats, taking a bite (in this case I will break off a bite) and trashing the food.  It will be nice to share instead of trashing.

On the back of the OBC it reads "Momma"...on the back of the OST it reads "Mama"...

???

We have lookled at numerous CDs and books - "Momma" wins hands down. The Scrabble album has "Mama", first release of OBC (Merman) has "Mamma" but the re-release has "Momma". A printed version of the show has "Momma".

The Summer of 76 (people were talking about it on Friday). I was performing on the University of Minnesota's 1858 Paddle Wheel boat which they had turned into a small theatre. We were doing The Streets of New York, a 1963 Off-Broadway musical by Richard B. Chodosh (music) and Barry Alan Grael (book and lyrics). It was based on the 19th Century melodrama by Dion Boucicault of the same name. It was also one of the most wonderful summers of my life. I was 23 and in love and performing and getting paid for it. What more can one hope for? I remember sitting on the top of the boat with the rest of the cast watching the Bicentennial Boat Parade on the Mississippi the night of July 4th. Ahh, what a time.

Jason & Ann I don’t think I could handle a CPAP machine.  Instead of sending me to a sleep clinic the doctor just had Keith watch and see if I was breathing during the night.  He says I do but I know sometimes I wake up gasping for air, usually right after I fall asleep (when Keith is completely out) and not during the night or the wee hours of the morning when Keith checked on me.

Jason I hope Bernice continues to improve the quality of your life.

Cook it til it's not pink anymore. Just take a knife and cut it open at the thickest part to check the color. There's no need to pre-cook chicken that is going to be cooked on the grill.

For DR RonP or other Big Brother watchers. Here is what someone else had to say about jen's "appearance" on housecalls (the show marcellas and gretchen host on the internet):

Jenn was on the phone for maybe 10 minutes, and it was really lame. Marcellas and Gretchen took it very easy on her. They asked about the swearing on your life, and about the plan to backdoor Ivette. Jenn apparently is living in some dream world, because all of her answers completely contradict what we're all seeing on the live feeds.
After she hung up, M&G apologized to the viewers for going easy on Jenn. Their hands were tied since she's on the jury, and were not allowed to give her any information. Therefore, they couldn't call her on her lies, or tell her how much she's hated. For instance, Gretchen asked her several questions about cheerleading!

Marcellas then went on a hilarious rant about how she's the most disgusting player in BB history, has no morals, and probably doesn't even have a soul.

When you cook on the bbq outside, do you keep the heat on high? And when should I not do this?

For some reason i always cook everything on high (which i guess is between 500-600F.  I sometimes put food on the high rack (not touching the grill). But i never turn one side of the grill down (i know i probably should do this, but i never have).

It was a built into the back side of the living room fireplace.  There was a curved built in bar dividing the BBQ from the dining table.  Beside good liquor lots of special goodies were kept in that bar such as our holiday fruitcakes and my father’s Mallomar’s.   We might help ourselves to one, but never ever were we to leave him without enough until market day.

When you cook on high does your food burn or get overcooked?  I think the result is where you should cook at.  We usually turn the grill down a little while cooking but each grill tends to be different.

Wow, Walty is a rather LARGE cat! How are he and Kilbot getting along now?

They are tolerating each other, even to the point of sitting within a few inches of each other, or on the bed together.  My suspicion is that they hung out together this weekend while we were out of town and that they've cooled off since we got back.  Walty keeps approaching Killbot expectantly and she keeps brushing him off.

The trick is letting Walty and Killbot know you are onto them.

When Dickens and Vickie seemed incurably antagonistic toward one another, I had to go out of town for the weekend and a co-worker who lived nearby came in to feed them.

Her report was that they were sharing food, playing and grooming one another.

When I got back in the house, they would have nothing to do with one another.

I had to make some extreme efforts to include them both in some intensive cooing and petting and grooming to get them to drop their guards.

DR Ron,
I get the live feeds with my Real One Superpass. Last time I cancelled that subscription, it took a month for it to go through. But you get a lot more with the Superpass than just BB, so I think I'll keep it for now.  If there's anything interesting on BB6 I'll fill you in

Thanks for the tips DR Jason.  The only reason i was thinking of pre-cooking is because i didn't want to spend an hour standing outside grilling.

I usually put the chicken on, and sit back with a beer or a glass of wine and occasionally check on the chicken. 30 minutes flies by pretty quickly and dinner is ready.

I'll probably try to watch the first few episodes and see how it goes.  I actually like "The Apprentice," but I've never really watched any of the clones.  The closest was "Situation Comedy" and I've only seen a few episodes of that...and not for a couple of weeks.

The problem with cooking something like chicken on high is that the outside will be overcooked and the inside will be raw.  A slower and lower temp will allow it to cook all the way through and still be moist. It takes a little longer, but tastes a lot better.

Also lean meats should be cooked slower at a  lower temperature....that's the mantra....slower and lower.....LOL

Of the other clips on BROADWAY'S LOST TREAURES III from the last two acts of the presentation, the only ones I didn't already have in my collection of Tony recordings were the Zero Mostel's tiny bit of "Comedy Tonight" and the Ethel Merman tribute to herself.

I must say that the station that I recorded this off of was not coming in very clearly last night, and the quality of the show was such that I won't be saving it to an erasable DVD. It's going to be shown on other PBS stations this week, and I'll try again to get a decent recording I can transfer.

Last year the DVD was released in either late September or October, so it really shouldn't be that long to wait to get the commercial release.

Quote
Synthesizer Innovator Robert A. Moog Dies
Monday, August 22, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C.  — Robert A. Moog , whose self-named synthesizers turned electric currents into sound, revolutionizing music in the 1960s and opening the wave that became electronica, has died. He was 71.

Moog died Sunday at his home in Asheville, according to his company's Web site. An inoperable brain tumor had been detected in April.

A childhood interest in the theremin, one of the first electronic musical instruments, would lead Moog to a create a career and business that tied the name Moog as tightly to synthesizers as the name Les Paul is to electric guitars.

Despite traveling in circles that included jet-setting rockers, he always considered himself a technician.

"I'm an engineer. I see myself as a toolmaker and the musicians are my customers," he said in 2000. "They use the tools."

The arrival of the synthesizer came as just as the Beatles and other musicians started seeking ways to fuse psychedelic-drug experiences with their art. The Beatles used a Moog synthesizer on their 1969 album "Abbey Road"; a Moog was used to create an eerie sound on the soundtrack to the 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange."

Keyboardist Walter (later Wendy) Carlos demonstrated the range of Moog's synthesizer by recording the hit album "Switched-On Bach" in 1968 using only the new instrument instead of an orchestra.

Among the other classics using a Moog: the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," and Stevie Wonder's urban epic "Living for the City."

But the now-pervasive synthesizer's ability to mimic strings, horns, and percussion has also threatened some musicians.

In 2004, musicians extracted a promise from the Opera Company of Brooklyn to never again use an advanced kind of synthesizer, called a virtual orchestra machine, in future productions.

der Brucer

Opera Company of Brooklyn should take a page from Susan Strohman's play book and use all pre-recorded music - see what the unions think of that!

For barbecuing chicken, I prefer to put my sauce-coated chicken in the over for about 35-45 minutes at 325-degrees.

I then transfer it, freshly sauced, to the grill over grey coals.  I cover it for about 10 minutes, and then turn it and cover again.  I test with a toothpick...easy insertion and clear juices indicate the chicken is done.

We finished the GOLDEN APPLE band parts around 3:15, and Jack Parton the librarian of the American Symphony Orchestra (and relative of Dolly) took Jose and me to lunch.  I had  fantastic baked ham with brie, greens  and honey mustard or a French roll, and I have no idea what DRJose had!

Anmyway, we taxied uptown and I bought Jose a drink for helping us out today.  I'm home trying to sober up and he's off for some Beard Papa creampuffs.

I got two exciting things in the mail: a check worth a bit of moola and a lovely (?) card from DRMichael Barnum.  Now I'm going to lie down.

As DR elmore mentioned in his earlier post, we had a nice time marking the cuts in The Golden Apple parts.  There were three of us marking the parts: myself, DR elmore and Jack Parton (who, yes, as it turns out is related to Dolly - something like eighth cousin, once removed).  So, come the first orchestra rehearsal on Wednesday, I guess we'll find out who marked the parts up correctly - or incorrectly as the case may be.

Interesting to me because of those 4 books which were in the running for our 2006 community reading program, To Kill a Mockingbird was the winner (just as several DR's predicted!).  The choice of that title qualifies us to apply for a major grant, so I spent great amounts of time last week, and will again this week, working on the proposal.  That's a real turn of the tables, because I'm usually coaching and encouraging proposal-writers - I'm gaining a lot of empathy for them!

This is a Tuesday-Saturday work week for me, so today has been my day off.  It was full of errands and a delightful lunch with a friend who I won't see again now until after my New York/Atlanta trip in October.  We went to Mitchell's Fish Market, where I had yummy clam chowder and a salmon citrus salad.

Three posts in ninety minutes???  Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  It's the weekend that's usually ridiculously slow, so it's peculiar.

We are having a beautiful summer evening.  Too bad Keith couldn’t relax and enjoy it.   I just watched him dig a drainage ditch to divert the water on our road into a drainage pipe, decoratively covered with rocks, inside our fence.

We don’t know why water is bubbling up onto the road.  We would like to be sure it isn’t coming from our well.  For some reason the numerous folks without any water are ahead of us on the list for service.

Ok, Howie and Rachael are up. James got the veto....again and didn't use it. They are pretty funny right now. It's a live vote from now on. So that has changed. James seems to be going back with the outcasts. I'm not sure if I believe him about it. But it is an interesting twist

I knew Universal was releasing those special editions of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and THE STING, and I am especially anxious to have them, particularly the latter which I refused to buy on DVD in a full frame release. (I had that already on VHS).

Can't wait to hear what you think of the quality of THE STING.

I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed SAN FRANCISCO. It's a wonderful old fashioned entertainment with terrific production values, top notch stars doing some of their finest work ever, and for the time, astounding special effects. No wonder this ranked as MGM's top grossing production for many years. What's not the like?

The quality of the image on the videotape was pretty amazing, too. Yes, there was some damage, some missing frames, and some scenes seemingly cobbled from a 16mm print that looked blown up and soft focus for no reason. The sound was one of the most robust mono tracks I've heard in awhile.

Once Warners masters this for DVD, I think there will be many happy people. Still amazed it hasn't been one of the eligible films in the on-line voting Warners has done for the last two years. They must have special plans for it.

Spoiler below about THE COMEBACK --

THE COMEBACK had a hilarious episode centered around The People's Choice Awards. At one point, Lisa Kudrow's Valerie character has Nolan Miller (DYNASTY) design her a glitzy dress to wear to the awards, and then her publicist gets the bright idea to get the winner of PROJECT:RUNWAY to design her a gown since he's "happenin'" and Nolan Miller is such old news.

Anyway, Valerie gets the dress FedExed to her, she wears it on the runway, meets the designer, and learns she has the dress on backwards. It had been such a rush job that he hadn't sewn in a label, so she didn't know which side of the dress was the front. She was all taped into the dress, and she was frantic to get it switched so she could get some attention on the red carpet. Of course, it takes so long to change that she missed all the photo ops on the red carpet before the show starts.

And then, her show loses the award, but the young female star of the show wins and she has to present a brave face of happiness for her "rival."

There are only two more episodes of the show before it ends its run, and I'm really afraid it's not going to get renewed.

I sent in a question to the TV Chat at USATODAY this afternoon that was used. I asked the critic if the new HBO series ROME was going to acknowledge the bisexual nature of the ancient civilization in the series. He said it was, so we shall see how that gets woven into the fabric of the usual sex and violence that goes with stories about ancient Rome.

Can comedy timing be taught?  Or is it just something you have?

Just returned a while ago from MY THREE ANGELS rehearsal.  How is it possible for ONE actor to be in the exact WRONG spot onstage for every moment of the play?  How can someone be so unaware?  I am supposed to be in the middle!

Yes, I saw it was a veritable Joan Crawford festival on TCM. I have the DVR set to get FLAMINGO ROAD this morning at 4 a.m. I have it on laserdisc, but it will be so much easier to burn a DVD directly from the DVR rather than running cables from the laserdisc to the DVD recorder.

RE: the discussions of DRtd and DR JASON, I will just have to quote Miss Doris Day in PILLOW TALK:

"I don't have any bedroom problems.  There's nothing in my bedroom that bothers me!"

Sadly, my biggest bedroom problem is sleep apnea.

It's amazing to me how quickly one can fall into and out of an infatuation/crush/love/whatever. The Greek and I were having a conversation via instant message during which I was teasing El Greco about a post-breakup tryst that the Greek had with the Ex. The Greek said, "Oh stop! That was with someone I love." Love. In the present tense. That was my "Aha!" moment. All I could say in response was, "I know." A person can't compete with that, and I'm not foolish enough to try.

And so the saga would seem to come to a very disppointing end. And of course, the song playing on my stereo now? "If in my two hands I could hold her face/while my fingertips kiss her eyes and lips/and make them love and light and shine/that would take two other hands - not mine." How's that for sucky timing?

It's a good thing the powers that be at work know I'm flexible.  I was already an hour into my workday when they asked me to stay an extra hour.  "Sure," I said, "Just let me call der B to let him know of the schedule change."

So, dinner was an hour later, too.  Good thing pork chops don't take long to cook.

It's nice to be wanted.

Good Evening!

...Currently listening to Renee Fleming's "jazz" CD.  Hmmm...  I don't hate it - like some people do - but I'm not sure just how much I like it.  Yet.  However, Fred Hersch and Bill Frisell sound wonderful as always.  As for Ms. Fleming... I'm just wondering if there are any old personal tapes of her "early" jazz and big band performances.  It would be interesting to hear those... and to compare.

In any case...

So...  I meet DR TPunk down at Splash.  I meet some of her friends who met here there too.  We walk out to the main floor so that we can watch the Dreamgirls Act One Finale on the big screens.  When we get there, she introduces me to her friend, Jay.  He works at Disney Theatrical, where Antonia worked.  So, we're chit-chatting between musical numbers, and I mention that I'm from the DC/Richmond area.  Well, he says that he went to school in Richmond.  At VCU.  Where he was a theatre major.  DING! DING! DING!  "JAY!! WOW!!!"

It turns out we knew each other back in Richmond while were in school.  In fact, I had slept on his floor a few times up here in New York City when I would come up here during college since I was good friends with his roommate.  Just such a small world.  And such a happy coincidence.  Truly made my evening.  *And I have to say that Jay looks great.  He was always "cute", but he was skinny cute - stick skinny.  Well, he's filled out a bit, and has a nice tan now.  ;)  Hopefully, we'll be able to catch up in a quieter locale sometime in the coming days. :)

Here is the front of the new mainstage facility.  Under one roof you can find the Nikos Stage (small theatre), the Mainstage (big theatre), the Center Stage (the black box), four large rehearsal studios, a costume shop, a scene shop, classrooms, offices, etc.  Quite a lovely space.  And it's called the '62 Center since it was built with funds from the Class of 1962 of Williams College.  It was completed within the past couple of months, and this was the first summer that the Williamstown Theatre Festival was using it too.

To the left of the picture above is the Nikos Stage - which is below.  For those who have been up to Williamstown in past seasons, look closely.  The brick structure is what remains of the Adams Memorial Auditorium which was the home for many years to WTF productions.  When the '62 Center was constructed, they dismantled the front of Adams, and then built a new facade as part of the '62 Center which allows a central box office as well as restroom facilities all under one roof.
