Title: STRANGE ADVENTURES
Post by: bk on August 24, 2005, 12:14:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've learned of the strange adventures, the strange adventures have learned of you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're having some extremely strange adventures of their own.

DR MBarnum mentioned yesterday;
Quote
As for Robert Redford, I prefer his television guest spots on Perry Mason THE CASE OF THE TREACHEROUS TOUPEE and on the episode of TWILIGHT ZONE “NOTHING IN THE DARK”. I understand he is very good in the film WAR HUNT co-starring Mr. John Saxon, but I have yet to see that film.

I remember an episode of Twilight Zone with Robert Redford, but I don’t recall the title. Is that you mentioned the one in which he performed a messenger from the heaven who took an old woman to the heaven?

It's "Ask BK day" - but doesn't it feel like every day is "Ask BK Day" - kind of like Mother's Day - you should respect your mother every day, and you can ask BK questions every day, can't you?

Here's a question - how does the electronic hat work for picking out the winner of the sparkling prize from among the trivia winners?  Is it a whole ceremony audited by a CPA firm, and should a live feed be considered?

Well, it's early.  Skip is off to California (San Francisco, then Sacramento)  for a few days, and he has an insanely early flight.  So the dogs got an early breakfast, and I get to impress the office that I'll actually have a memo written before 8 on a hot tax topic.

BK, my question:  Heard anything from Gary Owens re: New Guy In Town?

Heard nothin' from no one.

Here's another question that I shall ask myself:

What in tarnation am I doing up at three o'clock in the morning?  Answer: Not feeling well - queasy.

Our Electronic Hat (patented) was invented for me by a computer expert.  I share no information about it.  It is hush-hush and on the QT.

Good morning, all!  The ghost walked through this place earlier.  Around 5:20, I awoke to the sound of objects falling.  Since falling objects - usually books - in my apartment can be lethal, I got up and checked out the room.  I don't seen any debris or items on the floor, so I'm quite perplexed.  About once a month, the ghost puts in an appearance.  Usually, it's the feeling that someone's walked past me or that I'm not alone in the apartment, but I guess he (In the past 24 years here, I've seen the ghost twice; he wears a blue shirt) felt I'm not frightened enough of him or not paying him enough attention.  I need a ghostbuster to kick some butt.

So, I'm now ready to face the day, hear Act One of THE GOLDEN APPLE with DRJose, work a bit on the cruise show, and see what fresh hell turns up.  Yesterday Alex Rybeck called me about some work for Faith Prince, but it might conflict with my trip to see family in Ohio.  Yes, it's booked:  Sept 21-28.

Dear Friend BK, I have no questions yet, but maybe later!

I think DRMBARNUM saw TEAM AMERICA at the actual Movie Thee-Yater and enjoyed it.  I haven't seen it, yet.

Good news about the Mini LP packaging.  AND I still say, MR BK, isn't there a program that will print labels when you do some type of data entry....and a two letter or number code added to the top or bottom left of the label would tell you which CD to put in the envelope:  NG = New Guy in Town, ST = STAGES, ATB = AFTER THE BALL, etc.

I think a ghost would wear see-no's, which are a ghostly variation on chinos.  Or maybe Berrmuda triangle shorts.

Title: Re:STRANGE ADVENTURES

What kind of pants does the ghost wear?

I believe the ghost is the man in the apartment below me who hanged himself in 1981 (I swear I didn't drive him to it!).  I've seen the ghost twice, and it's been peripheral both times:  all I remember is the bright blue shirt.  The first time I saw him I was kneeling on the floor sorting dirty laundry when I became aware pf someone in a blue shirt standing above me and when I looked up he was gone; the second time, I was waiting for the elevator, and in my peripheral vision I saw someone in a bright blue shirt walk across the hall and through my door!

If it is the suicide, he was a handsome young man, probably in his late 20s.  His girlfriend hadn't heard from him in several days, so she came to the apartment, opened the door and found him hanging.  The super's wife identified the body for the police.  He was very quiet, and I believe we only spoke once in the first year I lived in the building.

'morning!  Even though I don't go to work until noon today, I was up before 7am, thinking about all the things that need to be done.  So far, I've gotten two packages ready to mail (clothing returns) and caught up with last night's and this morning's posts.

BK's comments about amazon.com in today's notes explain why my New Guy in Town has not yet arrived.  I ordered it on July 24, along with After the Ball and Carly Simon's Moonlight Serenade, both of which I received long ago.  Think I'll just wait out amazon, to see just how long it takes.  If I don't have it by the NY trip, I'll join Danise at Tower Records and purchase it there.

I have a question for BK - How were your sessions with Helen Reddy?  I've recently revisited "Center Stage" and still enjoy it immensley.  Also, how did it work for the CD single of "Surrender", was that a VS release and what input did you have on that single.  I won't even ask about the single's cover art!  :)

Why don't they do one DVD transfer of movies for all the regions?

When other regions are doing US titles, the studios don't really care what they give them - and then they end up doing better transfers here - happens in almost every single case.

BK - Shipping - Are you able to use the postage/label feature on usps.com?  Yes, you do have to type all the info in, but then it just prints out a label for you and you stick it on the packages.  You can even have the tracking portion printed with it.  However, it's usually the size of a half-sheet of 8.5x11 paper, so..  But, still.. ???

I have been up since three.  Watched a movie.  Not quite as queasy now (ate a meat ball sub at seven last night - it was good, at a good restaurant, but maybe it's just not agreeing with me - I hate when things or people don't agree with me).  I may try to go back to bed soon, but I've got someone coming over at nine-thirty to pick up the Aron's reorder.

DR Jose - have you done "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change"?  I've been wanting to ask you for a while, (even though it's ask bk day) what did you think of the arrangements?  I really like the score, I think it lays under the fingers well and it feels like it was written by a real pianist, not an arranger.

I've got our Kritzerland labels on rolls, so I have to hand print.  However, the code thing is a good idea, and I think I'll hand write what will go into each envelope right on the top of the label.

My first question for ASK BK day:

What was the title of the opening number that your friend remembered, and what was it's most memorable lyric?

The only thing I remembered prior to asking her the question, was part of the tune, and the following opening lyric:

Look at the people
Walk down the street
People you meet...

We both remembered finally that the song was called That's The Way The World Is Made.  What it had to do with Ring Lardner, I have no idea.  I don't think any of the songs had much to do with Mr. Lardner - all the spoken material was his.  For whatever reasons, the spirit of the revue worked, though, and seemed of a piece, and the audiences ate it up.   When I went to live in NY in 1969, I went to visit Ring Lardner, Jr. and I played him the songs.  He was very taken with them, and then said just what I've said - "They're really charming - don't know what they have to do with my father or his work, but they're good."

I really like Miss Reddy, and we made a good album.  I would have to say that she wasn't my favorite person to work with - I found her very strange.  She was always telling us of the previous night's sexual escapades with her very young Brazilian lover.  TOO MUCH INFORMATION, that's all I can tell you.  I told Petula Clark the story, and her reaction to it was priceless.

Hey there!  Yes, I have done the show before, and, yes, the piano part is a true piano part.  *Although it did take me a few tries to find a good fingering for that one jazz lick in "Waiting".

When I did it, it was just me and a violinist.  Are you adding the optional bass?  *During the entr'acte, we went ahead and expanded the quasi-cadenza section, made it sort of like a challenge/Dueling Banjos sort of thing.  *Ooops... R&H please ignore that previous statement.  ;)

It's a fun show, and there are some funny songs, "A Stud and A Babe" had me laughing every night.  And then there are some surprisingly touching moments, "Shouldn't I Be Less In Love With You"... Great song.  I had a great cast, and the show is written in such a way to insure that each person gets their moment in the spotlight.  Just enjoy the ride down "The Highway of Love".

:)

Post by: Matthew on August 24, 2005, 06:03:38 AM
DR Jose, thanks for the comments.  We are adding the bass as we are in a medium size space, it will help make the sound fuller.  If we were in a smaller space it wouldn't need it.  I love my cast, they are the best ever, they've taken some pretty elementary staging (more about that LATER!) and made it their own.  We had a run-through for the designers the other night and it's in great shape and we open in 4 weeks or so, so that's really exciting!!!   One thing I've noticed with the score is that almost every number seems "ripped off" from other Broadway show song in terms of style and sometimes composer.  Eventually I'll start writting those thoughts down, but it's been fun discovering those things!

Cynthia understudied Glenn Close on Broadway in The Crucifer of Blood, which I believe our very own Pogue did here in Los Angeles, California, USA.

I'm having a little trouble visualizing this.  Ms. Close is a very small woman, and Mr. Pogue is not a very small man.  How did he ever fit in the costume?

Still, it's good to know he is so versatile!

I watched 3 episodes last night!

My all time favorite episode is on this set...the one where a widow lady's car is stolen, along with her children's Christmas gift (a tv) which was in the trunk.

And of course, watch for Dorothy Neumann to pop in as assorted old lady characters in various and sundried episodes.

I'm not DR MBarnum, but I can answer. The episode you're referring to, where Redford played Mr. Death as a policeman, is entitled "Nothing in the Dark."

For some reason, I thought he was in another TZ episode, but I can't find it right now. Unbelievably, THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMPANION has no actor index, a major flaw in the book's construction.

What is the QT, anyway?

It stands for the "Queen Tiffany", an unregistered luxury liner with a near-mythological reputation.

Very many things are said to have happened "on the QT" and have been "kept" on the QT.  I suspect there's a very small international cabal of very powerful people who run it all "on the QT."

So in this case, the winning name is drawn from an electronic hat, by BK in the safe home environment, but the electronic programming is based on the Queen Tiffany ("on the QT").

But, ssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...it's not for public discussion, being "on the QT", as it were.

DR Jason - I have an MTI rant, I hope you don't mind... BUT

The theatre company that I'm quite involved with put an application into MTI in March for "Urinetown" - we were told that it was a new property and we needed to wait to see if any of the regional/pro theatres in the area wanted the show first.  Turned out, in May, we finally got approved, which was exciting.  As far as we knew, we were the first people in the area to grab the show.

Turns out, a local community college theatre, who draws from the same audience and talent pool as us,  ALSO got the show and announced their season after we did.  Their show is end of Feb/March, AND then we found out that a company about 20 minutes south of us open the show 2 weeks after we close... same talent pool there, too.

Let's not mention that a CHILDREN'S theatre in the same city as we are got the show for this summer (Palo Alto Children's Theatre)

I know MTI can't micro-manage their clients, but it just doesn't seem right is all.

Thanks for listening!

Where did you get this answer?  I looked around myself, and all I could find was that QT simply stood for the first and last letters of "quiet."  I admit, your version is more interesting...but where did you find it?

Sometimes I wonder if people are manipulated by watching the show. I know Ivette was whining about rachel's reaction.  But i didn't see it at all.  In fact Ivette was driving me crazy.  She is such a hyprocrite and i want to strangle her.

DR Matthew: I explain this to my customers all the time, many of whom are confused and angry by our amateur licensing policies. The fact is, there is no statute of limitations in regard to the number or location of amateur productions of any title in any given city or state. In other words, Community Theatre A and Community Theatre B could perform URINETOWN on the same night in the same building with the same curtain time without violating any contractual agreements. The only groups who are granted exclusivity on any titles are the large, professional regional theatres and in a few rare cases, very large community theatres that pay their actors a certain level of salary.

Since announcing URINETOWN as an available title, we have received hundreds of applications for that show. Some of them were approved - others were not because a professional group declined their request. Once an offer is approved, a contract is sent out listing the fees and terms. Whether a group chooses to sign and return that contract once they've received it is up to them.  We don't know who will choose to proceed with the show, so we can't say, "We can't send you a contract until Community Theatre C tells us if they're going to do the show."

Like I said, I had a woman apply for 10 titles yesterday - obviously she isn't going to do all of them, but I have to send her contracts if she asks for them. If she signs a contract for TOMMY and returns it with some money, the show is hers. If the high school down the street decides they want to do TOMMY, too, it's between those two schools to hash out who gets to do the show or just go ahead and do it at both venues.

For your community's sake, I'm sorry to hear that there are so many productions of the same show booked for what sounds like a small region, but MTI, as representatives of the authors, is here to make money for those authors and get their shows produced as much as we can. With over 60,000 customers in the amateur department alone, it would be quite impossible for us to micro-manage to such an extent that we could avoid double-bookings of a title in any given community. It is ultimately the responsibility of the theatres in any community to communicate with one another and discuss their proposed seasons before signing any contracts or making any announcements, which we assume that they do.

And as far as "misrepresenting Ivette"...the producers are very much aware of the overhwhelming "dislike" America has for the "fiendsheep".  To show any of them as they truly are would upset too many viewers.  Ivette is called "Evilette" in many chat rooms.  Maggie is "Maggot" and April is "Yapril," (as DR Jennifer has indicated in past posts).

One of the callers to House Calls yesterday revealed a new medical term -- O.C.D....."Obsessive Cappy Disorder".

Was it too funny or what when Ivette was remarking last night about Rachel's completely understandable reaction to Beau's nomination comments.

Like...he speaks in, like..highly affected bitchy gay slang...like...well, umm....like...and he's going....like..."You've been on both sides and are very shady...and white...and pitch black...and..like...that's..like..my reason.

We all knew Rachel expected to be nominated and was not shocked in the least.  But her quizzical reaction...and the faces she made...were totally how I was reacting myself.

But ever-hypercritical Ivette asked, "Will she be able to get rehired for her job after reacting so stupidly?"

My question is:  Would anyone in his right mind EVER hire Beau or Ivette again?

OH, my gosh, April couldn't win a challenge to save her life!

The reaction I was referring to from Rachel, was her reaction to being nominated. I just thought it seemed undignified, and Rachel has always been rather dignified and adult about everything.

As for Beau...you know I hadn't really developed any kind of an opinion of him, until now...and now I know that he drives me crazy. I find that bitchy diva act very annoying.

I still think that Janelle and Howie's mean spirited outbursts recently were childish and out of line...however, I am still rooting for them over the "friendship" group. Although, maybe I am really rooting for James now! LOL! He is playing good!

From the WHEN WILL THEY EVER LEARN Department:

Quote
Competing DVD Formats at Impasse as Deadline Nears
By Alex Pham
Times Staff Writer

August 24, 2005

A fight over the next generation of DVDs appears inevitable as manufacturers of rival technologies near a self-imposed deadline without agreeing on how to merge their designs into a single standard.

Although some executives hold out hope that a last-minute compromise can be reached, many analysts are skeptical that the two camps — led by Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. — can reach a deal that would allow them to jointly roll out new, high-definition DVD players and movies by Christmas.

The impasse recalls the battle 20 years ago between VHS and Betamax for dominance in the fledgling home video market.

Toshiba backs a format called HD DVD, while Sony is behind the Blu-ray format. Both promise ultra-crisp pictures and crystal-clear sound using high-capacity discs the size of current DVDs. Sony and Toshiba want to avoid a format war because consumers are likely to hold off on buying either technology until a winner is established.

"Late August is the practical time limit" to reach an accord, Yoshihide Fujii, Toshiba corporate senior vice president, told the Yomiuri newspaper in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Executives from Sony and the Blu-ray Disc Assn. acknowledged Tuesday that time was running out, but that a deal was still possible.

"We are still optimistic that we can still craft an 11th-hour solution," said Andy Parsons, a spokesman for the Blu-ray association.

Toshiba and Sony plan to launch devices in the coming months. Toshiba has said it will ship an HD DVD player for about $1,000 by Christmas. Sony plans to incorporate a Blu-ray player in its PlayStation 3 game console, set for release in spring 2006; the company also will sell stand-alone Blu-ray DVD players.

Because the underlying technologies are so different, it would take six to nine months for the companies to modify the design and manufacturing of their products to accommodate a unified format once executives agree to a deal, said P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research.

Movie studios also are backing off plans for a big debut this holiday. Paramount Pictures, which said in January that it would release 20 films on HD DVD, recently said it would not release any this year. And NBC Universal, which had pledged to release 16 titles on HD DVD, said Tuesday that it was unclear whether those movies would be out by the end of this year.

Both my mother's and father's families have many accounts, some funny and some terrfifying, of paranormal activity.

I'm just back from an orchestra rehearsal of Act One of THE GOLDEN APPLE, which so needs a complete recording, if only for an appreciation of its compositional brilliance.  Every scene seems to be variations on two or three themes and its truly boggling.  Some of it sounds like Moross' BIG COUNTRY score, some parts remind me of Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances," and then there are "Windflowers" and "Lazy Afternoon," two examples of perfection in songwriting.

We've never discussed it, but I suspect there are several ghosts in the building:  the lesbians on the fourth floor swear they have a ghost who takes towels off the shelves and leaves them folded on the floor.  The Ansonia on 73rd and Broadway has a little girl's ghost who haunts one of the towers.  My friend Bill Tynes claimed to have seen her.

Your comments on the RCA OBC, please.

der Brucer

The OBC recording is pathetically short, and I wish the RCA producer had the foresight/clout of Goddard Lieberson to record the complete show on 3 LPs with that fantastic cast.  The show is thorough-composed, and the album can give you a section of, say, "Helen Is Always Willin'" but it cannot show you how brilliantly the melodies in that song are developed in a 10-minute scene.

The entire opening "Nothing Ever Happens In Angel's Roost," takes the harmonies and melody and runs rampant through a number of moods: Helen's boredom, the three townsladies' chauvinism, Mother Hare's mysticism and cynicism, and Penelope's elation that the Spanish-American War is over and the boys are coming home, at which point "My Love Is On the Way" ends the sequence, which is about 7-8 minutes long.

The only spot on the OBC that shows how some of the piece is composed is truncated "Judgment of Paris."  The theme is on the sax, Mrs Juniper's Angel food sequence is a variation on the theme, and it's about 75% recorded from the entrance of Paris to the can-can off.  Unfortunately, the opening agitato sequence with the balloon is gone (very BIG COUNTRY), as is the ladies' first appearance with their baked goods and the introduction of the theme.  I think the bits and pieces on the OBC arewell-performed and I'm grateful we have what we have.  Alas, it's about one-third of the score.

You'd have to find a producer or studio who liked the book enough to want to option it or have it adapted into a screenplay.  Producers, as a lot, are mostly ignorant people who place far too much reliance on what their teenage "readers" coverage is.  I happen to think the Kritzer books would make three beautiful films, or they could all be rolled into one mini-series or much longer film.  They're soft, but soft in a good way and a way that movies need to get back to.  People are so ready for a film with characters and heart and simplicity and no bombast and I think a look back at a much simpler and better time would be just what the doctor ordered.

I got to watch about 45 minutes of THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY. The Technicolor is richer than richer - really, it looks like they're used Ultra-Resolution on this (though they haven't) because the color is so deep. The film looks a tad dark to me, though. Maybe that's one reason to color looks so overly saturated.

Anyway, a robe Fred wears used to look like dark purple or navy. Now, it's easy to see that its purple with red and blue piping running through it. Amazing color and detail which DVD affords us.

I have noticed a few spots of color print damage and one long shot where the color is obviously out of registration.

Back to THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY again. It's easy to see that this was a follow-up to the successful Garland-Astaire teaming of EASTER PARADE. "My One and Only Highland Fling" is such a rip-off of "A Couple of Swells."

I don't think Judy Garland lasted long enough during the production process to have filmed anything for the film proper, but her costumes were made and fitted, and I wonder if any of her wardrobe tests (stills or footage) still exist? That would have made a much more interesting special feature than some of what is offered on the disc.

And did Irene design Ginger's dresses totally differently from the designs for Judy, or were Judy's designs simply rebuilt for Ginger? There is that one famous photo in the Freed Unit book that shows Judy visiting the set in one of her BARKLEYS costumes after she had been replaced while Oscar Levant looks on.

Next week, Fox issues that Shirley Temple boxed set with LITTLE MISS BROADWAY, CURLY TOP, and HEIDI in it. Interestingly, you can buy LITTLE MISS BROADWAY and CURLY TOP separately but not HEIDI (it was released in a separate DVD a few years ago which I have, but it seems to be out of print now). The price of the two separate discs is about the same price as the boxed set of three films.

My roommate spent last year at Round Barn in Nappannee...and DR Jose spent a summer there a few years back. Oh, the stories they have to tell. I actually visited Jenn when she was up there last August. It's beautiful, but I can't imagine living there year-round.

Other than the Temple films, I didn't see much of interest being released on DVD next week. Well, I liked HOUSE very much during the season, but I haven't been watching the reruns, and I don't think they are episodes I will want to revisit. HOUSE is available next week. Ditto NIP/TUCK.

I didn't see SAHARA at the movies (can't stand Penelope Cruz), but it's coming out next week also.

My guess, DRMATTH, is that since Ginger stepped in on such short notice, that her costumes were designed "on the fly" - but I doubt that she wore anything designed for Judy since they were such different body types.  Ginger wrote in her book that when she reported to MGM, the first thing she did was go to Irene's workshop to look at sketches, so Judy and her clothes were OUT and Ginger and her NEW clothes were IN.

I can't imagine Judy in the gold lame dress Ginger wears under the opening credits....although the pajamas and casual slacks might be Judy items.

I think tomorrow, I'll make a CD from the video of the workshop of Sunset Blvd.  The video quality isn't good, but the sound is from the soundboard, so that quality is good.   It's one of my favorite "recordings" of the show and has the original London cast

Yes, and Ginger was such a stickler about her clothes in films that I suspect she would have been insulted if the costumes weren't designed specifically for her.

Thanks.

Why yes I am, DRRLP.  It is at Amish Acres, in Nappanee at the Round Barn Theatre (as opposed to my Hazel Day Longden Theatre on Round Barn Road in Greencastle).

At Napannee they do shows nine months out of the year and PLAIN AND FANCY runs in repertory with the others in the season.  When a new show is rehearsing, P/F is up.  You can see it from May to October on different dates and weekends.  8)

http://www.amishacres.com/aa_musical_theatre/musical_theatre.htm (http://www.amishacres.com/aa_musical_theatre/musical_theatre.htm)

It's a great space.  I have only been there once, to see something OTHER than P/F....but if you're traveling back through Indiana, it might be a fun place to visit!  8)

Thanks for the background.

Oh!  Funny thing!

My mother is going to be "mingling" with the cast on Friday evening.

She and my aunt are on an excursion done for folks who put trips together.  Today they arrive in Covington KY and have a buffet dinner on the Belle of Cincinnati (a riverboat).  Tomorrow, they go to Nappannee and will do the local sights...like a Dutch village and shops/crafts/antiques, etc.  Friday they tour the Amish countryside and hit all the "shops", the Ruthmere Mansion, Midwest Museum of American Art for the Rockwell exhibit, and the evening is nearly capped off by a family style "Threshers Dinner" at Amish Acres' Restaurant Barn where they will take in a performance of Elton John/Tim Rice's "Aida".  Then it's back to the hotel and a "mingle" with the cast of "Plain and Fancy."  More touring on Saturday and a drive to Louisville.  Touring there on Sunday and a return home to SC in the evening.  (I can just hear my mother now: "My son majored in drama in college and I know he's done little theater, but not for a long time now.")

It's free and it's something she would not otherwise ever have considered doing.

So...ain't retired life grand?  Simply GRAND?!!!??!

"Bufet Dinner on the Belle of Cincinnati" - a delightful excursion into Nyotaimori  - Naked Sushi. A succulant repast of fried country ham, grits, greens and red-eye gravy served on an appropriately un-adorned belle of the grand old south.

Good Evening!

What a beautiful day it was here in New York City.  Sunny, breezy, not too hot, not too cold... just wonderful.

And I started my day off wonderfully with the first orchestra rehearsal for The Golden Apple.  I've never listened closely to the score, although, I know I have the OCR in my collection.  The piece is rounding out the Bard Music Festival's summer season which was devoted to Aaron Copland and his circle - and influence.  Boy, is there a lot of that in The Golden Apple - especially the "western" sounding material.

I also got to catch up a bit with Nick Archer who is playing piano in the orchestra.  Nick was the conductor for A Little Night Music at the Kennedy Center, and he's one helluva pianist.  Great chops, as they say.

After rehearsal, I had the honor of lunching with DR elmore and his pal, Jonathan Tunick, who is conducting this performance of The Golden Apple.  We ended up in his old stomping grounds - Mr. Tunick is an alumnus of The Juilliard School, and Riverside Church is right around the corner from the "old" Juilliard (now Manhattan School of Music).  Stories were told, memories were shared.  A very nice way to spend the afternoon.  And on the subway ride downtown, Mr. Tunick passed on a bit of "news" to me which brought a smile to my face.

:)

I spent the rest of the afternoon running around trying to find a Kinko's where the printers for their computer stations actually worked!  Good grief!  I even volunteered at one place to "fix" it for them since it looked like all that needed to be done was to reboot the network connection - otherwise known as turning the printer off and then back on - but I was told that since I was not an employee...  They told me I could just send the page I needed to be printed to the "back", but then that would take at least 10 minutes for them to process and bring to the counter.  So...

Since I was about a week overdue for a haircut, I headed down to Chelsea Barber to get my hair cut.  And Chris did a fine job.  I shall have to ask for him directly next time.  It's one of those cuts where it makes me look like I've lost some weight.  :)

And then it was over to Kinko's on 24th... The printers worked there.

DR JRand -- are you familiar with a production of "Plain and Fancy" being done in or near Nappanee?

DR Ron Pulliam - As DR Jason stated, I did do my time at the Acres one summer - I believe back in 1997.  I did State Fair, The Music Man, Shenandoah and The Baker's Wife.  Oh, and Plain and Fancy, of course.  It was a "tough" summer, but I made some very dear friends while I was there.  You had to have friends while you were there that summer to survive (unfortunately).  I admire Richard Pletcher - the owner of the Acres - for his chutzpah, but that triple repertory schedule is a killer.

In fact, that was only the second gig where I ended up taking the "out clause" in my contract.  I was offered my first job at Ford's Theatre - All I Really Needed To Know I Learned in Kindergarten (with Bonnie Franklin and James Whitmore, among others) - and I took it, and gave them my notice.  Four weeks notice in fact, when all that I was required to give them was two weeks.  Well... To put that whole summer in perspective, the "Artistic Director" at the time did not start looking for my replacement until four days before I was leaving.  So...  I ended up spending my final 36 hours there teaching the new guy the two current shows that were currently running - Shenandoah and Plain and Fancy - as well as bringing him up to speed on The Baker's Wife that was currently in rehearsal.  -And then I drove home that Sunday night.  Straight home.  I left Nappannee around 9:00 that evening, and pulled into Richmond around 9:00 the next morning.  12 hours, and only stopped once for gas.

And 24 hours later, I started at Ford's Theatre.

:)

But the summer after I was there, the "old" Artistic Director's karma caught up with him, and he was let go for a myriad of reasons.  It's still a crazy schedule there, but, from what I understand, there's no longer a sense of "fear" and "danger" constantly in the air.   -And that's enough of that trip down memory lane...

Speaking of Cincinnati, I don't know what the Enquirer would have printed today if the president of the University of Cincinnati had not issued an ultimatum to the basketball coach.  The story filled the better part of 3 of the 4 sections of the morning paper.  He (the coach) blinked and will step down.  She (the president) appears to be one tough cookie.

I found the following at World Wide Words: (http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ont2.htm)

Quote
According to Robert Hendrickson, in The Facts on File Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins, the first reference is from a British ballad of 1870, which contained the line “Whatever I tell you is on the QT”. It seems to have been just an abbreviated spelling, using the first and last letters of the word quiet, the mild obfuscation also suggesting a meaning for the expression.

Same source gives the following verse for the song "Ta-Rah-Rah-Boom-Di-Yay:

A sweet Tuxedo girl you see,
Queen of swell society,
Fond of fun as fun can be,
When it's on the strict Q.T.

Hi folks.

Sorry but we had a bad rain storm.  I signed on the computer, answered about 2 emails and had to sign right back off again.  Now it’s almost bed time.  Oh well.

I jus quickly scanned some of the posts.

Saw the one about ghosts.  I’ll swear to my dying day that I saw an Almost in this here very house shortly after we moved in.

I was sitting and reading a book when I saw a man, old fashion clothes, beard, blue eyes, tall watching me from the door frame between the kitchen and the living room.  When I turned my full attention to him, he was gone.  Of course, if it was an Almost, that’s a good thing because as the tale goes if you ever confront one face to face, you’ll die.  :o

In other interesting news, I had someone down at work tell me she had a dream about me.  She said I was at Burlington Coat Factory, trying on trench coats with many pockets.  She said that I wanted as many pockets as possible so I would have a place for a flash light, an umbrella and a dozen other things that I wanted to carry with me.  The odd part is that it sounds just like me.  I am a scout, prepared for everything.

When I pack for NYC I will have a flashlight and an umbrella so she called it true.  I’ve taken them on every trip.  :)

To bad she couldn’t have dreamed that win the lotto tonight.  It’s up to 35 million.  Ahh well.   :-\

I've never seen a ghost, but my dad said that he experienced one.  He used to be the night manager at a local restaurant that no longer exists.  Strange things would happen when he was there alone.  One night, there was some water in a sink that had the stopper in.  Bubbles were coming up out of the bottom of the sink and they spelled out the name "Glen." :o Spooooky!  He said that he'd say "hi" to Glen all the time after that, since he knew the ghost's name.  My dad never did find out if anything had ever happened in that building to anyone named Glen before he worked there.

Ooohhh...  Ghost stories...

Olney Theatre in Olney, MD - The cast house has a ghost or two.  Or maybe even three...  A frequent sighting is of a mother and daughter (probably around eight years old).  They are usually seen sitting at the piano.  And sometimes one can hear the mother playing.

In the old theatre - they just got a new theatre - there is a very present presence.  I've experienced it a few times.  It's actually a friendly feeling - still kind of spooky and creepy - but friendly.  And it actually feels like a group of people, in fact, you feel "it" the most at that back of the house along the back row of seats.  And it's literally something you feel as soon as they turn the house lights out, and they put the ghost light out on stage.

*And I was always thankful that I never got housed in the rooms "behind" the theatre.

;)

Ghost Story #2...

When I worked at Circa '21 Dinner Theatre in Rock Island, IL, there was a ghost in that cast house too.  Most of the time he appeared to people in a window.  My friend, Kelly, saw him a couple of times.  She would be looking out the living room window, and he would be outside looking back in, standing in the yard under the tree.  Five or six years old, dressed in a suit, blond hair.  She thinks he was/is Amish or Quaker from the way he dressed.  She was scared the first few times she saw him, but after a while she would try to keep his attention and talk to him.

And I would sometimes feel "something" walking through the second floor hallway on the way up to my room.

A lot of the houses at Goodspeed are haunted.  The place I stayed in last year and 1999 has a ghost, which I saw walk across the hall.  Harvey Schmidt's room on the second floor had a locked door that led to a small storage space right above the front door.  Harvey swore there were nights the door knob turned.

Some of you may recall that she appeared in handful of the early Our Gang/Little Rascals short subjects, and she starred with Bing Crosby in BKs favorite 1930 film PENNIES FROM HEAVEN as well as with W.C. Fields in MRS WIGGS OF CABBAGE PATCH.

I also watched CSI: NY tonight. I didn't watch it during the regular season (watched LAW & ORDER when I was home and DVRed it when I wasn't), so I'm catching up with it now.

I think I can see why it's the least popular of the CSI shows. The cases are as interesting as on the other two. But the actors they have in all the primary roles, excellent as they are, have that New York bluntness and assertive attitude which can be off-putting toviewers who are non-confrontational types.

The CSIs on the other two shows shroud their expertise in politeness, a crisp rather than caustic stance about their work. I'm not saying one is better than the other, just that the more aggressive officers on CSI:NY are not easy to warm to.

DR MattH, re: veronica mars, which episode # did you get? I think i have like 6 episodes left.  but so far i have no clues to the killer. I didn't even realize that this would be resolved this season.  Do you know it is resolved or is it just your guess?

We get 2 more episodes this week (tomorrow and sunday).

It is definitely resolved in the season finale. We find out the killer's identity then. I really have no clue which episode this was tonight. It was the one with Veronica discovering the dog kidnapping ring.

Jose, when did you work at Circa? Did you ever meet Susan, Oh, I can't think of her married name,  her maiden name is Lundy. She plays the piano. She played there for a long time

I've heard her name, but I never met her.  I was there about four or five years ago for Have A Nice Day!  If I'm remembering correctly, I was brought in since she was taking some time off and/or had another gig.  Is she the one married to the sound guy?  I think that's who Susan is.  Maybe so, maybe not.

Oohhh... Now I have a craving for Whitey's Ice Cream and/or some sweets and ice cream from Largomarcino's.

:)

And on that note, a rather weak and wobbly high A, I shall toddle head the Burger of Wuss.  I'm playing auditions in the morning, and then recording some demos for Triangle.  -Yes, there will be a CD!  :)  And then, time permitting, I shall head back over to Golden Apple rehearsals in the afternoon.

OH!!!!

And I'm thinking I may just "gather" at La Cocina on Friday since that seems to be a good central meeting place - and it's close to a subway stop too.  As the evening progresses, the locale may change, but that sounds like a good place to start.  *And if we start before 7:00, then the frozen margaritas are "2 for 1"...  But since Golden Apple is scheduled to go till 6:30 that day...  Ah, well...  ;)

*And I just have to remember that Beard Papa closes at 8:00, but there's also Cafe Lalo around the corner too.

Any other suggestions or ideas?  Maybe even a piano bar?  Hmm...

I've been out watching "War Of The Worlds". Not that bad but oh so many plot holes and inconsistencies.
