Title: IN A STATE
Post by: bk on August 25, 2005, 12:08:06 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are not in a state of longeurs, whatever the HELL that means, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in a state - New Mexico, for example.

I wasn't really errant and truant last night (Wednesday), I was at the movies!  That's right, I went to the movies.  A brand spanking new 16-screen movie theater opened in Lacey (just north of and right next to Olympia) and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (tonight), they're showing movies for only $1 for worthy causes!  (Friday is the "official" opening.)  I was planning on seeing the 9:30 p.m. showing of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" because I'd missed it the first time it came around.  I guess I wasn't the only one who missed it. ::) Anyway, it was very crowded in the parking lot and the lobby, but people weren't acting crazy in a mob-crowd kind of way, so it was okay.

I got in line and it only took a couple of minutes to get to the window (they had three of their six ticket selling windows open) and literally the moment that I stepped up to the window, "Hitchhiker's" had sold out!  GGRRRRRR!  They had a big lighted display board that showed the times of all the movies and when a time changed to "SOLD" it was sold out.  I was looking at it as I was about to say "One for the 9:30 showing of...." and the 9:30 changed to "SOLD."

So, taking a moment, I looked quickly at what was not sold out and yet to show and I saw that the 10:05 showing of "Robots" was available.  Since I hadn't seen that one either, I got a $1 ticket for that...and I only had 55 minutes to wait.  Oh joy.  So I got myself a $1 diet Coke and I stood around for about a half hour before they would let anyone in.  I have to admit that the place is pretty spiffy.  Nice, new, modern, clean.  They had very comfy seats.  And they have "stadium seating" so that if tall people sit in front of you, they won't block your view!  Nice wide aisles so that everyone can get around each other.

The only problem with the whole experience was the darned movie itself!  Specifically the film.  It had scratches in at least five or six areas across the screen, running through the entire movie!  There was not one single moment when there weren't at least five or six scratches on the film.  AARRGGHH.  However, I actually didn't dwell on it at all and very quickly could ignore them.  Otherwise, it was a very cute movie with a very simple plot and wonderful computer animation.

Now, I'm home and must go to bed.  I don't know many Bacharach & David or Goffin & King songs as their songs, so I'll just have to say, "ditto" to a lot.  For instance, Tomovoz mentioned "Will you Still Love Me Tomorrow."  I like that song.  As for Bacharach & David songs, let me say "everything in Promises, Promises!" ;)

For some reason, I thought he was in another TZ episode, but I can't find it right now. Unbelievably, THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMPANION has no actor index, a major flaw in the book's construction.

Thank you, DR MATTH. I’m interested in the another episode you mentioned, as I think I’ve never seen it.  However, I couldn’t find it on http://www.twilightzone.org/index2.html. or on another Japanese site. ???

Good morning crew. Jose, I shall probably toddle up to La Cocina tomorrow to wish you a happy natal day. Since I have to work on Saturday I don't know how long I'll stay but that's for tomorrow's thinking.

Love Promises Promises. I am now too old to play Chuck Baxter, but I'm also too old to play many other roles that I never got around to doing. Such is life.

Good morning!

Well, we're getting just a little taste of fall. It's still hot as blazes here during the day, but it actually went down to 62 last night which made for a pleasant morning. My central A/C has not snapped on this morning since the house cooled down during the night. These cooler nights are supposed to continue for the next few days at least.

Today is Norma Shearer Day on TCM, and I'm recording quite a few of her classics. I've never seen the MGM PRIVATE LIVES at all, so that will be #1 on my to-see list today.

I'm recording THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET to watch again as it's been years since I've seen it, and I remember her and Charles Laughton being so wonderful in it.

I've never seen her ROMEO AND JULIET all the way through. Looking forward to Basil Rathbone's Tybalt and John Barrymore's Mercutio in this film. Yes, everyone is far too old for the parts, but since everyone is old, it all kind of works for me, or at least it did the last time I saw part of it.

One of her last films comes on later today, HER CARDBOARD LOVER. She chose this instead of MRS. MINIVER which was offered to her, and it was a terrible flop. I have never seen it either, and I'm very curious to see what there was about the movie that would have made her interested in it.

One of the movies I recorded over the weekend is Basil Rathbone's take on Philo Vance, THE BISHOP MURDER CASE. I have seen all of William Powell's Philo Vance movies, but I've never seen this one, and I am looking forward to it, too.

Oe of the things I'm finding while reading this John Schlesinger biograpohy is that I REALLY want to go back and look at his films again. It was only a few months ago when I watched THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, but reading about the making of the film in the book this morning, I'd like to see it again. I also felt that way when reading about the making of DARLING, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, and SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY. I'm going to have to have a two day-long John Schlesinger Festival when I finish this book.

Who are Goffin and King?

I'm in a bad mood today. I don't know why - I just am, and part of me (I won't tell you which part) just doesn't care. Not a good state of mind to be in when it's only 10am and I have a whole day of idiots stretching out before me.

It's a beautiful day in the City of York that is New. 68F and clear skies. Just loverly. Too bad I'm too grouchy to appreciate it.

British police crack missing gnome case
Two women charged after for pilfering from gardens in Central Scotland

In an apparent breakthrough in a series of mysterious garden raids in Scotland, police in Britain have charged two women after discovering a huge cache of garden gnomes, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Police reportedly found least 40 gnomes, hedgehogs, rabbits and furniture in a house in Alloa, Clackmannanshire in central Scotland in what they described as an Aladdin's cave of garden ornaments. They also unearthed more than 60 plant pots and 25 solar lights, according to the BBC.

People in Stirling, Clackmannanshire and Falkirk in Central Scotland had complained that gnomes, hedgehogs and rabbits had gone missing, it said.

The discovery was the culmination of an 11-day police investigation into the spate of thefts.

Cracking the case was described as a "significant achievement" by Detective Constable Roy Lake, but the challenge of making sure the gnomes had a home to go to remained, the BBC said.

"Our task now is to identify who the items belong to and ensure they are given back to their rightful owners," he was quoted as saying.

Guess I owe Travelocity an apology, I was blaming them!

We've been sleepless for two nights, too, worrying about all this house nonsense.  But we sure have great chats at 2 in the morning.   :)

B&D:  well, we're doing "Something Big" (the song) at another fundraiser tonight, so I'll say that for now.  Although some of the rare stuff we dug up for the revue is great.

I finished watching "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte" last night.  It's a bit of a slow go in the first half hour of the film, but it picks up quite well.

Bette Davis chews quite a bit of the scenery, as does Agnes Moorhead.  What I wouldn't have given to have been on that set during shooting!

Olivia de Havilland looks terrific throughout the film...the more I've learned about her, the more I've come to believe she wasn't necessarily having to "stretch" her "acting" horizons during those scenes in which she was mean to Charlotte.  She was one tough cookie, that one was.

And a stunning woman, to boot!

My absolute favorite recording of "Go Away, Little Girl" is actually a version sung by Janis Siegel on her "I Wish You Love (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005Y4PT/qid=1124989739/sr=8-3/ref=pd_bbs_3/002-7701208-5864855?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)" CD and she sang (of course) "Go Away, Little Boy."  It's a very slow jazzy ballad and just wonderful.  And her recording of "Mr. Sandman" (not a Goffin/King song) is VERY different and quite beautiful...yes beautiful (in my humble opinion...IMHO in Internet lingo). ;) Listen to the 60 second clips!

DR JRAND - I'd like to get one of those Jose haircuts, too.  According to a lady I trust in my office, my haircuts make me look even heavier*, although she insists I look younger after a haircut, so that's  a trade-off.

I'm well beyond ready to go home. I had two calls in a row that I have put me over the edge.

The first came from a woman in California who yelled at me because we shipped her materials for LES MISERABLES SCHOOL EDITION to the right address. Problem is, she moved and forgot to tell us, and for that she was yelling AT ME. Of course, it was my fault that I didn't have the foresight to call her before we shipped her books to her just to make sure she hadn't MOVED!

That phone call was followed by a fellow who has a 16-year old mentally challenged boy who likes to do "toy theatre" and wants to book this kid to go from home to home (living room to living room) performing full-length musicals (i.e. PIPPIN in particular - I'd love to see the orgy scene) for a flat fee of $150-$200. I explained to him that that would be fine, but he would have to license the show just like any other community theatre group who plans to present a show from our catalog in front of an audience and that he would, like any other group, be expected to pay rental, royalty and security deposits on any shows he expected to perform. He didn't like what I had to say and told me that I was not working with him in the spirit of promoting musical theatre (as he claimed our website proffered) and he wanted - no, demanded - to speak to the owner of our company. I offered to let him speak to my supervisor, but he said that the head of amateur licensing wasn't important enough and he wanted our CEO's name and number. Never having been in this situation before, I started to give him the name of our CEO's Admin Assistant, but everyone gasped in horror as I did and told me to have the letter sent to the VP of the company instead, so I gave him the VP's name.

After the guy hung up, my boss sent out an email featuring the subject line, "Irate Customers (Jason's Call)" to everyone in our department including his supervisor - my boss. He did not make any explanation as to the situation or WHY the customer was irate, but he did mention my name four times in the body of that email and how we should NEVER bother the CEO with the minutae of our day-to-day work. So now my boss is going to get an email that basically implies that I am the reason that man was irate. I, as usual, was in the wrong.

And this is why I hate my job at MTI. That, and the fact that lip-smacking girl is grazing on raw carrot sticks just 5 feet away from me.

I need to get out of here...

Oh! And did I mention that yesterday I had a customer who claimed that the head of our education division told her that she could do one of our shows for free. Now, I didn't know anything about any offer for a free show, so I sent an email to the head of education's admin assistant to see if the thing was legit. The head of the ed department emailed me back saying it was kosher and to proceed with the offer and he cc'd my supervisor (the one who wrote the crap email today).

I got back from lunch yesterday and there was an email from said supervisor telling me that I shouldn't have gone over his head with that question. That by bypassing him, I made him look "ineffectual" and that directly affected his annual review, and in turn his annual raise (or lack thereof). He admitted that he would have asked the exact same question that I had asked, but said that I should NEVER ask ANYONE a question unless I asked him.

I responded that I did not intend to make him seem ineffectual - that I had simply tried to cut out the middle man for what seemed like an incredibly simple question, but that if he wished to be bothered with piddly shit everyday, I'd be happy to bother him to his heart's content.

Pardon my French.

I LOVE THIS CD!!! I play it all the time. She worked with Fred Barton of Miss Gulch Returns fame to put it together. MGR is also a very, very funny CD.

Miss Gulch is a wonderful piece. I had the pleasure of seeing an anniversary production with Fred reprising his brilliant performance relatively recently. As for Fred and Elena, the two are absolutely brilliant together. I used to catch them frequently at my beloved Eighty-Eights, of blessed memory, and "Wrinkle in Swingtime" is one of the best albums of any cabaret/piano bar performer out there.

Speaking of cabaret performers and Bacharach, I would be remiss if I didn't plug Combo Fiasco, an Australian trio, who perform a very wonderfully cheesy Bacharach medley.

Thanks for the welcome back, Vixmom! I don't know if I'll have the time to post more frequently here, but we'll see.

People in public education most of the time seem to be uptight about things, as they are underpaid, don't have a decent budget to work with, and all their "rights" as a teacher seem to have been stripped away by socieity.  I'm not defending their behavior, but that's the reason, usually, that they can get that way.  A lot of times, they are asigned things like "the school play" and don't have a clue as to how to go about doing it the right way - as in getting the license, etc.  It is a tedious process when applying for a license for a show, and MTI is the easist to work with while undergoing the process.  People aren't prepared for that process.  Anyhow, my point is.... DR Jason, I'm sorry you have to deal with those type of people in education, and I know you would go out of your way to get the answer people need, it seems the people higher up from you have their own agenda, which isn't fair to you or your collegues.

And now, Mr Demille, I'm ready for my close-up.

And now, Mr Demille, I'm ready for my close-up.

DR Matthew: I appreciate the sentiment - really, I do - but this has nothing to do with someone being stuck with a show and not knowing how to go about doing it. I deal with those people everyday and manage to help them out. This has to do with a stupid woman yelling at me because she  had materials sent to a house that she no longer lived in. This has to do with a man who, after having the entire royalty situation explained to him TWICE, could not understand why Mr. Schwartz and the other authors of PIPPIN need to receive a royalty if he's "only" charging $200 to have some kid play with toys in someone's living room and then throws a fit, yells at me and demands to speak to my boss. This is about a boss who, in an attempt to look "effectual," sent a shitty email to his higher-up and my colleagues about a customer who demanded to speak to the head of the company but conveniently left out all of the information regarding the situation that led up to his ridiculous outburst, leading my big boss to believe that I did something to cause this man's outburst, which in turn makes ME look "ineffectual."

I've said it before and I'll say it til the day I die - this job is killing my soul and I need to leave it.

I thank you for listening to my rants today. I promise, I will try to keep them to myself for the rest of the afternoon. And thank you, everyone for your good vibes and bitch-slaps...I appreciate them.

BK  do you know anything about this?

Quote
LOS ANGELES - The mysterious disappearance of Grammy-nominated music producer Chris Julian has all the elements of one of the Hollywood thrillers that he scored: a frantic, pre-dawn phone call; an Internet scam; and police searches in Topanga Canyon.

According to Southern California media accounts, Julian, 48, whose real name is Christian Julian Irwin, vanished Sunday after calling a friend via cell phone to say he was being chased down a ravine near his home by pursuers who were out to kill him. The call was made at 3:45 a.m. and no one has heard from Irwin since. One of the few clues that police have is a pair of the missing man’s glasses, “found halfway down the hill behind his house, where it is believed that they fell as he ran,” the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Friends and relatives say the most bizarre element in the case is Irwin's recent involvement in a “Nigerian” Internet scam. The swindle involves e-mailed appeals for advance money to help move large sums out of Nigeria. Victims are told they’ll get a big chunk of the fortune in exchange for their help.

Los Angeles County Deputy Luis Castro, a sheriff’s spokesman, declined to comment on the Internet scam angle.

But Irwin’s friend and former business partner Fortunato Procopio, 47, told the Times that Irwin said had been drawn into some kind of Internet fraud and threatened by the con artists.

According to the Times, Procopio "told him it was clearly a scam — don't be silly." But other friends and relatives told the newspaper that Irwin later received a mysterious $50,000 check and became increasingly concerned.

A troubling phone call
The Times story says: “On Sunday morning, Procopio said, he was awakened in his Venice home by a phone call that was picked up by his answering machine. When he played the recording, he heard Irwin asking for help. Irwin said he was in hiding and someone was in close pursuit.

Procopio tried calling Irwin but couldn't reach him, the paper said. Then, he and his girlfriend began driving to Irwin's Topanga home. On the way, Procopio got another call from Irwin, saying that “he had been chased from his house down a ravine in back by people and possibly dogs. He told Procopio he was barefoot, having lost his shoes, and feared for his life.”

Described as 6 feet 2, 190 pounds with graying brown hair and blue eyes, Irwin was believed to have been wearing a red and blue shirt and blue jeans when he disappeared.

According to Irwin's brother-in-law, John Riolo of Carlsbad, sheriff's dogs tracked the missing man's scent from his home to a business on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. The dogs then tracked the scent into another small canyon and lost the trail, Riolo told the Times.

According to his Web site, Irwin is “an independent record producer and engineer whose work has brought three Grammy Nominations, over 50 Gold and Platinum albums and an Emmy Award.” He has worked with David Bowie, Jimmy Webb, Vanessa Williams, David Crosby, Chaka Khan, Don Was, Art Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Queen Latifa, Isaac Hayes and Lisa Stansfield.

Film credits
His film credits include "The Big Red One," "The Kid and I," "Benji 2," "Silent Partner," "Crash Landing" and "Moscow Heat."

Hisaka, a very Happy Birthday to your mother.

"Nothing in the Dark," written by George Clayton Johnson, offers Gladys Cooper as Wanda Dunn as an old woman who has barricaded herself in her basement apartment for years, fearing that Mr. Death with kill her with a touch. Wanda knows that Death can take many disguises. But despite her fears, when Harold Beldon, a young policeman is shot outside her door, she drags him inside. Of course, the fact Beldon is played by Robert Redford might have something to do with her letting her guard down.

I can empathize with what DR Jason is going through. Dealing with the public can be wearying and soul-crushing. On the other hand, it does help put food on the table. I'm sure you have an endless array of things you tell yourself that help you get through the mind-numbing junk from day-to-day. And on bad days, even that doesn't work.

I know you're looking forward to having the day be over and heading out for some "me time."

THE BISHOP MURDER CASE was released in 1930 so the sound was fairly primitive, lighting wasn't always advantageous to the actors, particularly Basil Rathbone who was wearing the heavily mascared eyes from the silent movie days.

Still, it was a pretty fun mystery, and I was proud of myself for figuring out the murderer's identity before it was revealed.

I also started watching PRIVATE LIVES and got through about 45 minutes. Montgomery and Shearer are just fine as Elyot and Amanda, though a bit more clipped British about them would have given the comedy just that little bit of extra zip. I've always liked Reginald Denny, but Una Merkel is trying as Sybil.

It's said that the NYC performance of the play (with Coward and Lawrence) was filmed so that the MGM stars could refine their performances by watching how the originators of the roles did them. I'm not sure that's really true, but wouldn't that film be worth a fortune now if it really existed!

Dealing with the public:

I am not of the opinion that the customer is always right.  I always go out of my way to deal openly and honestly with customers, but if they behave unreasonably or are just plain wrong, then I don't care who they are, and if that loses me some customers in the long run, that's just tough beans.

Quote
APPLE VALLEY, Calif. -- Scout Taylor-Compton, star of the 2004 teen comedy "Sleepover," was reunited with her family Thursday, two weeks after she went missing.

The teen actress had last been seen Aug. 12 at her family's home in San Bernardino County.

The Apple Valley Police Department learned about her whereabouts from school officials Thursday and returned Taylor-Compton to her family, said Jodie Miller, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

"She seems to be unharmed, no evidence of any criminal activity during the time she was missing," Miller said.

The department previously said the girl was believed to be a runaway.

Additional details weren't immediately available.

Taylor-Compton recently finished filming the independent movie "Tomorrow Is Today."

She also goes by the name Desiree Compton

BK, I agree...I don't think the customer is always right, sometimes they are just downright obnoxious and unpleasant and who needs their trade.

Favourite Bacharach Songs:

House is Not A Home (like the Brook Benton version)
Tower of Strength (Gene McDaniels)
Liberty Valance (Gene Pitney)
Make It Easy On Yourself (Jerry Butler)
24 Hours From Tulsa (Gene Pitney)

And I'm becoming very fond of Yesterday's Heroes sung by Mr. Guy Haines.

I'll have to do a little research on Goffin/King, although Rodzinski's list was pretty good.

So I'm driving home from a meeting this afternoon.  And my nephew's picture is on a Billboard on Sunset Blvd for Banana Republic.  Here's a tale...he's in New York, meets a fashion photographer who stops him on the street, liked the glasses he was wearing, and asks him to model.  In the year, he's been doing this he's been to Italy and Europe and done major fashion spreads in all the big magazines.  If you knew him, you'd think he would be the last guy to be a model.  He's just an old Kentucky boy with a degree in Engineering.

The customer may not always be right, but is the the person who signs the paycheck always right, though?  When I would complain about my bosses at one of my old jobs, my folks always used to take the attitude that (as long as there was nothing unethical or illegal going on) the boss is always right, as long as the employee wanted to keep the job.

3 favourite Goffin/King songs of mine that may not have been mentioned:

When My Baby Is Smiling At Me (sung by the Drifters)
Every Breath I Take (my favourite Gene Pitney ever!)
Point of No Return (sung delectably by both Gene McDaniels &  Guy Haines)

The lack of knowledge of the work of Carole & Gerry
would suggest that DRs may not know much about the other famous Brill Building writers either.
Cynthia & Barry, Neil & Howie and Jeff & Ellie.

These writers were American pop music of the late fifties/early sixties as were Lieber & Stoller and Pomus & Shuman.

It may not be "cool" but I know there area few DRs who are Neil Diamond fans. His tribute album to the "Songs From The Brill "Building - Up On The Roof" is a good collection of work by those writers listed above.

Bacharach & David also worked in the Brill Building.

Of course the boss isn't always right - frequently it is the opposite.  But, with a boss, you're dealing with the person who has the power.  With the customer, it's one sale lost, and I simply won't put up with obnoxious or uncalled for behavior from anyone.  I don't snap immediately - I've received nasty e-mails or calls and have managed to win the person over instantly by my good nature.  But, if they persist after I've made that attempt, woe to them and whoa to them.

I listened again to the OBC of Funny Girl.... I hadn't done that in a long time... and WOW! that Streisand lady was quite something then. So much power, passion and life in her singing... and boy does she SING all the notes and do we understand every word, which is something I can't say of the soundtrack for the film version!

A good advise: do listen again to FUNNY GIRL the original Broadway recording!

Got the Astaire/Rogers set (had a bunch of credit at Amoeba), also got The Red Tent, which I've never seen (stars Sean Connery and is a big production from the early 70s), and also got a new region 2 DVD of the Peter Cook/Dudley Moore Bedazzled, which happily is widescreen and enhanced - can't wait.  Also got the new DVD of The Killing of Sister George, which, according to the box, is finally enhanced for widescreen TVs.  The original release wasn't, and the region 2, whose box stated that it was, wasn't either.

During her first Broadway run in SHOW BOAT, Lonette McKee lived in the apartment next door and would come home from the theater in the wee hours of the morning and vocalize to her heart's content.  Then she would sleep in and kvetch about piano playing at the ungodly hour of noon.

We went to see the later revival of SHOW BOAT and  of course, as luck would have it, when we actually wanted to hear her sing, she was out.

For years I told all my friends (well, both of them) about this great movie, so when THE RED TENT was released on video we had a big viewing party............ I was the only one who didn't fall asleep.

Jerry Herman did win a Grammy that year, but it was for Song of the Year.

Two years later, Herman lost the Tony for Best Score for MAME to Mitch Leigh's MAN OF LA MANCHA but at the Grammys, MAME won Best Show Album over MAN OF LA MANCHA.

So...

I walk into Ripley-Grier this morning to play some auditions for the current tour of Evita.  They were casting for some replacements in the male ensemble.  The dance captain/assistant choreographer was teaching the combinations.  She then mentioned that she was going to get Larry.  Larry who?  Well, it turned out to be Larry Fuller.  The original choreographer for Evita among many other shows.  And then he started refining and teaching some of the steps.  Truly fascinating and wonderful to watch.  I actually got a little star struck.

...And then I was asked to come back for a few more days of auditions in a few weeks.  At that time, Harold Prince will be in the room.

Dealing with the public:

I am not of the opinion that the customer is always right.  I always go out of my way to deal openly and honestly with customers, but if they behave unreasonably or are just plain wrong, then I don't care who they are, and if that loses me some customers in the long run, that's just tough beans.
There is, unfortunately, a big difference between dealing with customers of your own organization, and with customers of a company you work for.

There is this unfortunate attitude with some of the public where, when they don't get what they want in the way that they want, they feel justified in making the person they are dealing with (a.k.a. Jason, or myself at the cash register) the object of their vilification.  It takes practice to develop a thick "skin" of outward projection, so that their rudeness simply rolls off.  When faced with these situations, I simply remind myself that they are really venting against the situation, and not against myself personally.  I then focus on the next customer, who is usually a true charmer, grateful for every assistance I can give.

The true villian in the scenario that Jason has given us is his supervisor, who has not learned how to roll with the punches.  Instead, said supervisor has decided to make Jason the villian (as if he could ever be one!), and written an e-mail to his own supervisor targeting Jason.

This is reprehensible behavior, as far as I am concerned.  Jason is right to be outraged.

The best response would be for Jason to write an e-mail in response, to the uber-supervisor, explaining his actions in as non-emotional language as he can.  If I were Jason, I would not even mention his direct supervisor, except to explain that he was taking the initiative to stop an inflamitory situation early, rather than let it continue further and disrupt the corporate structure.  I would appologize for any impropriety the action I'd taken, and ask for advice as to what action should be taken, should the situation arise at a later date.

In other words, I would remain a cool, cool, considerate man.  And I'd leave it to the ubersupervisor to decide what action needed to be taken next.

(By the way, I've been there, done that.  I had a supervisor who wanted me fired for her own incompetence.  I was able to get transferred to another department, after having a conversation with our ubersupervisor.  The supervisor who had been my nemisis then got fired, when it became clear that she was the cause of the problems.  About two years later, der B and I ran into her again...outside a gay nightclub.  She was entering, we were exiting.  She immediately tried to pump me for information about what was happening at the company, buddy-buddying me about how we gay people should cling together, about how our uberboss was homophobic, and how she was sueing the company for wrongful, discriminatory termination.  I wasn't buying.  I'd been out of the closet for years, she'd hidden, and I was the one who was still around.  I managed to skitter away from her clutches, and reported the conversation to the powers that be.  It's the only time I've ever purposely outed anyone, and I don't feel sorry about it one bit.)

HER CARDBOARD LOVER was an interesting film. Easy to see why it flopped in 1942 - too frivolous and underwritten for mass consumption. But the entire time I was watching it, I kept thinking that had it been made in 1936 or 1937, it might have had the same success as MY MAN GODFREY or THE AWFUL TRUTH. By 1942, I think that kind of hair-brained heiress character was pretty much over, at least if the screenplay wasn't positively sparkling. This one had four writers' hands on it, and it seemed inconsistent.

But I'll give it credit for bringing out a really playful side of the stolid Robert Taylor. I don't remember ever seeing him this carefree with lines and having such ease with his body. If people had gone to see it, it might have moved him into some of the same territory Cary Grant was triumphing in (and which Rock Hudson was able to achieve twenty years later after PILLOW TALK.)

ANd Norma looked lovely, too. As this was her last film, it was nice that she went out looking so stylish. And obviously director George Cukor insured that everyone on the set had a good time because I found that it flowed rather well.

I'm going to look the film up in my Cukor biography to see if there is any mention of it. He tended to ignore flops like this and ZAZA (among others) when discussing his career, but I'll see.

I got a great deal on shrimp at work yesterday, a two-pound bag for half-price.  Tonight I took a dozen of those shrimp, defrosted them in under cold, runing water, shelled and deveined them, and served them as part of an oriental-flavored meal.

I tossed the shrimp with some corn starch, then stir-fried them with some snow peas and water chestnuts, with the juice of a lemon adding to the sauce.  We had this with some sweet and sour pork, which was quite yummerful, and some vinegared rice, which helped cut the other flavors a bit.

Der B was determined to serve a piece or two of the pork to the doggies, but I protested and grabbed the rest for myself.  The pork was just too nummy for me not to take it for myself!!!

As for the shrimp, they were very, very good.  The lemon and the shrimp, paired with the veggies in the dish, was close to fantastic.

And we've lots of shrimp left for other experiments.  Time to look up a good recipe for scampi, I think!

I did manage to listen to a few cuts of the KISMET soundtrack. The stereo is just great, and Conrad Salinger et al did beautiful work with orchestrating the score. It was nice to finally hear "Rhymes Have I" sung by Keel and Blyth. One of the verses was skipped, sad to say, and the tempo doesn't match Drake's on either of his KISMET albums, but it's still nice to finally hear it.

Let him fire me as far as I'm concerned. At least I'd get unemployment if they let me go. I'm ready to leave there. In fact, if my bonus had been what we all thought it would be, I'd have put in my notice already. Let 'em fire me - I really don't care anymore.

I walked into my living room a few minutes ago and noticed how beatiful the moonlight was. Imagine my disappointment when I found out it was just the lighting rigs for a movie that's being shot on the roof of the school across the street.

I know many of you may not have ever seen a movie location, so I thought I'd take a picture and show you. I hope you enjoy!

The evening is beautiful in Oakland.  The fog is hovering over San Francisco (I can see it across the bay) and will roll in in the wee hours...on cat's feet.

It's currently F 65 degrees but should get down to F48 degrees.

Warming trend starts tomorrow.

After playing the auditions, I then headed down to the West Village to meet up with Tom and Curtis, a.k.a. Mizer and Moore, a.k.a. the writers of Triangle.  Lisa, our leading lady, met us there, and we proceeded to lay down a few tracks.  We got all four songs done in about three hours.  Not bad at all.  We recorded them "live" with me playing as Lisa was singing.  There were a few places we had to do some punches, but, all in all, the final versions should be composed of some pretty long takes - and Curtis will be "sweetening" up the sound with some additional instruments later on.

And, for once, I was actually not nervous in the studio - which I usually am.  *I think I was still dealing with the "shock" of playing for Larry Fuller just a few hours before.

**And I have to say that even after playing the show a few times before, those chord changes in the bridge of the rock and roll section of "Oh, What A Circus" come fast and furious!  -And are hard to read too!

Have done a bit of tossing out of things this evening...three huge bags full of stuff and a lot of broken-down boxes.

I find that, more and more, things I've clung to over the years mean very little to me now.

I'm not throwing out anything of true value, mind you....and nothing of sentimental value, either.  Just "stuff."

So...Italy is not a part of Europe any more???

 ::)

Last time I checked... it still was, even though, as i mentioned a few days ago, it seems that Paris has been "invaded" by Italians lately! So, maybe something has happened! ;-)

Oh... good answers to Jason's troubles! I quite agree! Jason should follow your suggestions!

Of course I was kind!  How could I not be?

What movie had the line: "He's every kind"?

They continue to adjust (and add to) the lighting. And keep in mind that it's 1:15am here. They're lighting up the whole neighborhood. The light is spilling into every window in the apartment, including my bedroom window which is at the back end of the building!

And I don't know they managed it, but t I haven't heard a single train go by since they started setting up their lights. How'd they get that lucky?

Still haven't figured out if it's a movie or if it's Law and Order. If you look reeeeeealy closely (you'd have to have superhuman eyesight), on the left hand side you can see a clothesline stretched across the roof. That's part of the set dressing. The roof on which they are filming is non-residential. It's part of a school building.

Here's a little bit better picture...

Have a lovely long weekend!  I hope the doctor says things to you like

"My what a healthy speciman"

and

"You're HOW OLD?! My goodness, you have the body of a man half your age"

and

"NURSE! No charge, This checkup is on me, it was a privledge to see you"

What he said was:

"Before we got into the results of your labs, I have to say you look terrific."

"Something is very much agreeing with you."

Then we talked about low good cholesterol and some border-line bad cholesterol and a few other things that folks my age get used to hearing...especially about the cutting back here, and exercising there.

And I can deal...and do...!

...And after the recording session, we headed over to Florent in the Meat Packing District for a wonderful dinner.  Their treat!  :)

I had the chicken roulade - very good!  Stuffed with mushrooms, spinach and fontina.  And some very good mashed potatoes and green beans on the side as well.  Very cool place.

*My favorite notation on the menu: "We are pleased to only accept CASH.  Thank you for dining with us."

And speaking of birthdays...

On the way back from dinner, I went ahead and stopped at Magnolia Bakery for a couple of treats.  A small banana pudding, four cupcakes, and a slice of the Buttermilk Chocolate Cake.  The banana pudding was sooo good.  And  the cake was good too.  As for the cupcakes, I brought those home for my roomies.  They enjoyed them too.

And before I forget...  This is the plan for now...

Tomorrow/Today/Tonight, Friday, August 26
La Cocina
217 W 85th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam - take the 1 or the 9 to 86th)
I'm thinking we should get there a little after 7:30.  Very casual.  Not a party-party, just a chance to catch up with some friends.  I may end up asking for a table in the restaurant area by the bar, or I may just "float".  We'll just have to see what the neighborhood crowd is like when we get there.  Will probably disband from there around 10:00.

Then...

Being the theatre queen that I am, I want to head down to Don't Tell Mama's.  Convene around there around 11:00.  Again, very casual.  And if it happens to be open mic, who knows, I might even sing!  *And you ain't heard nothing until you've heard me sing after a margarita or two (or three).  That's good stuff!

I'm back from the Seattle Storm basketball game.  They won!  They're in the playoffs and could win the whole thing again!  They won the WNBA championship last year.  Anyway, I have to take my niece to another game on Saturday.  That's two days out of three that I have to drive up to Seattle. :P My niece had better give me some more gas money.  She gave me a little today, but not enough to make two trips possible...or worth it. ;) Just had to share. ;D

Oh, at every home game, they have kind of a lottery where if your ticket/seat number is chosen, you get to go to a signing with a couple of the Storm players after the game.  My niece's ticket won!  Two of the players were down near the floor and we all were in line on the steps heading down towards the floor and my niece got these two players' autographs and pictures with them!  One of the things that my niece got signed was a picture that I took last year, so now I have two autographs of the four people in the picture.  There's still hope that I can get the last two before the end of the season.

Randy Yackle also played there, but they both play piano, so I doubt you would have been there when they were there.

RANDY YACKLE??  I never met him, but he used to live here in Olympia and did shows with people that I did shows with after he moved!  What a small world!!
