Good morning, all!  I had lunch with Alex Rybeck yesterday and picked up the first Faith Prince chart so I turned down DRJose's offer to socialize last night, alas!  I'm still working on the last cruise ship number. and I have to begin LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 this morning.  I also made possible plans to see TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA in Central Park tomorrow night.  I also listened to my friend Eli Bolin's score for I SING yesterday, which I enjoyed quite a bit.  I'd been asked to score the show, but nothing ever worked out.

With today's subject being "Tickled Pink,"  I wish I'd saved my tale of the pink bank checks for today (the one where the bank said they offered free checks, but the only color you could get for free were the pink checks, so nobody ever took the pink checks but ended up paying for their checks anyway.)  But I think I wasted that story on the day we were talking about movie posters, so I won't tell it again.  :)

Some friends, both living and gone, have written theater-related books, but I won't include those on principle, and that way they can't be offended that I'm not mentioning their books if they read this, and one or two of them (both living and gone) have been known to lurk here.

So favorite theater books by people we don't really know:

David Merrick, The Abominable Showman (by Howard Kissel)
The Season (by William Goldman)
Not Since Carrie (by Ken Mandelbaum)
Diary of a Mad Playwright (by James Kirkwood)
All His Jazz (by Martin Gottfried)
Harold Pricne & the American Musical Theatre (by Foster Hirsch)

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. Today is my day to sit in the office and wait for the printer people to fix the new printer we've had for three weeks.  After the fuser failed, the technician told us the machine already had 9,000 copies on it before it was delivered to us. Our contract was for a new printer. The folks in the printer sales office explained that in their industry, they can sell a demo machine for full price and  apparently not even have to tell you that it's not the new one you paid for. Isn't that interesting? I had words with them, but I don't think it will do any good. Anyway, they were supposed to be in to repair it on Friday, then Monday, now today. They never call to tell us they aren't coming.

We have our temporary occupancy paperwork all in order now, but we have a major problem to solve before we get our final papers. It seems the contractor didn't build the bathrooms according to the plans, so now the showers we had put in (the youth requested showers  for when they have lock-in sleepovers) don't meet ADA requirements for the handicapped. If we can't get the contractor to make the repairs or the City to waive the repairs, we'll have major headaches to get it in order.

Thank you all for your nice words and wishes last night - after a  little bit of sleep, I feel better. And I finally spoke with the Greek last night and got a few things off my chest. That was a big relief, though there is certainly MORE that I could tell. El Greco is aware that my feelings have been hurt and acknowledged my feelings, so that's better than sitting around and wondering. And honestly - what's the use of wonderin'?

For DRs Jane and MattH, and anybody else who wants to read a bit about the new Fall TV schedule.  It's not as comprehensive as I'd like. But it is at least a start:

http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,276|97098|1|,00.html (http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,276|97098|1|,00.html)

Btw, I watched Prison Break last night, and i'm not sure if I will watch it again.  It is not really my type of show. Although i think it was quite good for the type of show it is.

Unfortunately they had given away the plot, yet the pilot kept having these tense reveals right before commercial break. I suppose they were supposed to be shocking.  But I knew pretty much every single one of them.

One thing I will say (and this would be the reason i would watch again, other than there being nothing else on at that time) is the LEAD GUY.  OMG, this guy is so appealing to watch.  I love him.  I really dislike watching the inmates (it is set in a prison), cause they are violent.  But this lead guy is a freakin genius.  And it is quite entertaining to watch him.  He is charming, and as the girl in the zapit article said, I think he will be one of the breakout stars of this season. He is that good.

Thank you, dear readers, for the warm birthday wishes.
I’m happy to be here at HHW on my birthday and would like to thank to not only dear readers but dear BK for holding the birthday celebration for me in the notes.

I had a lovely dinner with my family and my landlord (as a friend) who lives in same apartment building. We went to Japanese restaurant and had Today’s special courses which takes about two hours through. All dishes were very delicious and had a fine taste.
I suppose many east coasters, especially DR JOSE!, know a Japanese restaurant “NOBU” in NYC. The owner-chef of today’s restaurant, Mr. Nozaki, and Nobu’s owner-chef, Nobu, have been considering them rivals each other for a long time and Mr. Nozaki told us today he’d open his restaurant in NYC in the near future. :-* :-X

DR JASON, thank you for your perfect Japanese! :D

I heard something so upsetting on CNN re: Katrina.  They were saying that a lot of people had to leave their pets behind.  I can't even imagine having to do that.

Also, I had CNN on when I fell asleep, so I was sort of half-listening, half-dreaming about what was happening.  I remember hearing about this hospital (i think it NO) where they were considering calling for help (since the water was rising). Only problem is most of the patients were critical care. I don't even want to think about how or where they would move these people.

Good vibes for all involved. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good Morning!

Well... Hmm...

The jack-hammering of the sidewalk outside my window started around 7:30 this morning... and didn't end until around 9:15.  Needless to say, I was not a happy camper, well, at least not a happy person trying to sleep.  Neither were my roomies.  Unfortunately, the sound of a jackhammer is not one that is easy to muffle.  I went back to sleep around 9:30, and got up around 11:00.  And now I'm feeling a bit queasy.  But, otherwise, I'm doing fine.

Good morning!

Thank you, DR Jennifer, for the link to new season info on shows. I have read descriptions of all of them almost from the time they were announced in May, but there are so many new ones (and lots of Sci-fi oriented ones) that some have kind of faded in my memory.

The FALL Preview edition of TV GUIDE comes out next week, and once it arrives, I'll have the shows more firmly in my mind than I have right now.

Not sure if anyone else will care. But this makes me very happy:

Kaysar (from Big Brother) on The Young and The Restless

Copied from CBS Web Page:

Big Brother 6 Houseguest Kaysar Ridha Visits Genoa City
Big Brother 6 contestant Kaysar Ridha will make his daytime debut on The Young and the Restless. He will tape scenes with series regulars SHARON CASE (Sharon) and DON DIAMONT (Brad), in which he plays a magazine editor aboard the Newman Jet.

The 25-year-old Iraqi-American and graphic designer, from Irvine, California, was eliminated for a second time from the Big Brother 6 competition on Thursday, August 18, one week after American television viewers voted him back into the house after his first elimination.

Kaysar will tape Thursday, September 1 and the episode will air on Wednesday, October 5.

And I was reading an issue of OUT magazine last night before turning out the light, and I was surprised that several new shows are going to have gay characters as part of the mix, more than I was expecting. So that was a trifle encouraging now that QUEER AS FOLK and SIX FEET UNDER are no longer on.

I was reading CNN.com's coverage of Katrina today. Apparently portions of New Orleans are under 20+ feet of water and they have no estimate of how many people have died. It's a gruesome image, but they had reports of bodies floating in the water. Just horrifying...

They also said that the Big Easy may be without power for four to six weeks. I can't even fathom that. They're saying the water is rising rapidly and that Tulane University Hospital has already had to move their emergency room to the second floor because the water has reached the top of the first floor.

It is true that some had to leave their pets behind, but not everyone. Here's a picture from the "Citizen Journalist" section of CNN.com. The caption reads, "Rob Chappell of New Orleans says dogs waited patiently from the safety of a pet-friendly hotel to see how the storm affected their homes." Let's hope they get to go home soon...

There are a few "sci-fi/fantasy" series debuting on primetime major networks this fall, too.

"The Ghost Whisperer" is one (ripping off "The Medium"), and another one has to do with an alien invasion (but apparently as microorganisms).

I'm more jazzed about "Survivor" starting up on Sept. 15.  Unless NBC relocates "Joey" from its 8 p.m. slot, it may be the deathknell of that inferior TV comedy spin-off.

There are THREE alien invasion shows, one each on CBS, NBC, and ABC. And then there's NIGHT STALKER, the update on KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER which has the bad luck to be slotted opposite CSI. But I'll be watching CSI and recording NIGHT STALKER.

Speaking of "inferior" spin-offs, Lifetime has been airing episodes of "The Golden Palace," the horribly un-entertaining, un-funny spin-off of "The Golden Girls" that lasted a season (I think).

Lifetime said "You asked for it and now You've got it!"

I want to know WHO asked for it and WHY?

Except for Beatrice Arthur, everyone is back, including directors, producers, production team and writers.

And yet...they don't have a clue what makes a show funny.  A show other than "The Golden Girls," that is.

Cheech Marin cannot and does not help matters a bit.  As "Chuy", he is unbelievably bad.  Sophia and Rose cannot BUY a funny line.

It's dreadful and then some.

I think undertakers would have a better grasp on what's funny!

Well at my house, these shows are not being RE-aired lately.

I've never heard of "Rescue Me" and "The Comeback".

I'm not involved in "Veronica Mars" despite a couple of efforts at watching it.

It's all in the eyes of the beholder/viewer, I suppose.

But give me this: You listed only SIX shows....out of HOW MANY that aired???

As for the shows I did watch, like "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives"....frankly, after seeing the first-season episodes two times during "regular season", the SUMMER re-runs are deadsville.

They produce enough shows to sustain 5 months...and we still have 7 months to allow them to be regurgitated a couple of more times.  Most shows cannot hold up to such scrutiny.

You mentioned this as being a deadly season. I differed with that opinion, and I failed to list HOUSE and THE MEDIUM as two of the most outstanding new shows of the past season.

When has it ever been any different? There have been no years when more than 8 or 10 new shows that debuted were not only quality shows but also popular enough to continue to a second season.

I don't watch those shows in reruns for the most part. I discovered VERONICA MARS this summer in reruns after not watching it during the regular season. I use reruns mostly to look at shows that skipped my attention the first time around. The only shows I watch in reruns that I saw the first time around are the CSIs because they look so glorious in high definition.

In honor of DR Hisaka's B-day, I will listen to the Japanese recording of "Aspects of Love" as I go about my daily business.

In all seriousness, is there REALLY such a recording? I knew there was a Japanese EVITA and a Japanese SCARLETT (GONE WITH THE WIND), but a Japanese ASPECTS OF LOVE?

You mentioned this as being a deadly season.

Matthew Hough!  I called last season a "dreadful" season.  I asked someone "call the hour of death" on it, but I never referred to anything as "deadly."

Dead, yes.  Summer re-runs.

But so few shows engage the little grey cells that network TV may well be on its way toward becoming deadly.

Perhaps we'll never know, but I believe it has severely dumbed down the majority of our population.

"House" was interesting for the first two episodes. Then you figured out the formula and it became very methodical. Someone gets sick. What could it be? House pops a Vicodin. Let's try this medicine on the patient. Oh, he almost died! House pops a pill. Let's try this medicine. He almost died again! House pops another pill and says something wry. Someone mentions something in passing that catches House's ear. He pops a pill and thinks. With only 8 minutes to go, he figures out the problem and saves the day (and the patient). He pops a pill. End credits.

DR Matt - yes there is a Japanese recording of "Aspects of Love".  When I conducted the show, I bought it to hear the orchestrations as I prepared the show.  It's rather interesting.

You got that right.  And then there's the predictable conflicts with the CEO and the wealthy man who donates tons of money and believes he should run the hospital.

And House has his young, eccentric crew who idolize and castigate him several times throughout each episode.

And then there's the totally unbelievable, for me, "romance" between House and his one female assistant.

Talk about fatal attractions...one obsessed with himself and the other obsessed with him.

Well, here's another horse race. Most episodic TV is formulaic, but Dr. House is such an interesting character and as the series is progressing, we're seeing many sides to his personality and sides to those around him, too, which enriches the experience. Some weeks, the medical case is the least important aspect of the show.

Like tonight's 9 p.m. episode, for example. It's called "Three Stories" and it contains genuine surprises that lift the show out of the routine and make it something special.

I also have Japanese cast albums of Phantom and A Chorus Line and Cats.

I, too, love The Season by Goldman, and I'm very fond of Diary of a Mad Playwright by Kirkwood.  I enjoy Not Since Carrie, and I'm a sucker for "making of" books and have the ones on Fiddler, Follies, Big, and A Chorus Line (maybe a few others, too).

Um. . . . she wanted the relationship, he didn't. They had one date as I recall. And this season, according to spoilers, she's going to embark on a romance with the British resident doctor on staff.

House is still mooning over his failed relationship with the Sela Ward character who is back for at least 7 episodes this season.

I have some paperback books on the making of MY FAIR LADY, WEST SIDE STORY, and GYPSY, but they don't approach the thorooughness of the CHORUS LINE or FOLLIES books.

Ah, yes, now I remember--digitally inserting people into photos.  Did anyone catch the hysterical segment a few years ago on the "New Candid Camera" where they did just that (and it was back in the days when that technology was new).  They were offering free family photos at a mall, ready in an hour.  They'd snap the photo, then insert some complete stranger and when the people came back to get the photos, pandemonium ensued.  Funt fils was actually quite funny (not always the case) in this one--as the customers stammered and protested that that person didn't belong or wasn't there when the photo was snapped, he would say, "Yes, but doesn't he look great with your family?"  :)

"The Longest Line"

And during the heyday of The Fireside Book Club (later The Stage & Screen Book Club), I bought a bunch of those coffee table books featuring a single show: The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Titanic, Rent, The Lion King, Sunset Blvd., Les Miserables, The Who's Tommy, etc.

I heard something so upsetting on CNN re: Katrina.  They were saying that a lot of people had to leave their pets behind.  I can't even imagine having to do that.

Evacuating with a pet is made more difficult because neither emergency shelters nor public transportation welcome pets.

The  Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana (http://www.hsnwla.org/) has set up an emrgency shelter:

Quote
Our shelter for pets evacuated due to Hurricane Katrina is up and running at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. We are located in large tents in the grassy quadrangle adjacent to the Red Cross shelter. We are still accepting evacuated pets, and as always we need donations of money or supplies.

There is a very special group,  NOAH"S WISH (http://www.noahswish.com/) was is set up strictly for disater assistance to pets:

Quote
Noah's Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straightforward mission.  We exist to keep animals alive during disasters.  That's it.

We are not involved in any other animal welfare issues.   It's not that we are not concerned about all the ways animals are abused and exploited.  Noah's Wish would like nothing more than to see all suffering stop.  Fortunately, there are a multitude of national and local animal welfare organizations who are tackling the issues that adversely affect animals.  No other organization has made the commitment though to just focus on disaster relief work for animals.  That's the void we are filling.

Noah's Wish came into existence in March 2002, not to duplicate existing efforts to help animals during earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes, but rather to expand on what's already in place.  Too often, efforts to help animals during these life threatening situations have been gravely inadequate.  It would be unacceptable if relief efforts for people were as fragmented.

Noah's Wish recognizes that animals need and deserve an organized, consistent, and professionally managed national disaster relief program.  Otherwise, they will continue to pay for human indifference with their lives.   What will raise the standards for how animals are managed during disasters is to implement well thought out, field tested, policies and procedures that are practiced in all disasters.  Relief efforts for people are managed this way and we feel they should be for animals too.

Noah's Wish Katrina update:

Quote
Noah's Wish has been extremely busy today responding to a variety of phone calls and e-mails, in addition to gearing up to send our initial team to Louisiana.  This team will be traveling tomorrow, followed by additional volunteers from all different parts of the United States and Canada.   We expect to have a team of at least 100 people in Louisiana by Friday to respond to the needs of the animals affected by Hurricane Katrina.  More of our trained Volunteers will follow to provided additional support.

I never realized how truly dreadful the 2004-05 TV season was until they began re-runs.

ENOUGH already.

Let's just "call the hour of death" and move on.

Well, it wasn't all bad!

Watching CNN is very upsetting today, I actually started crying.  They have incredible footage of rescues being performed.  There are many people on roofs waving/screaming for help.  They are also talking about all the people in need of medical attention.

It looks like in some parts of NO that the water is almost to the rooftop level.

"Hop! Hop! Hop! To Hoppers!"

Name the film in which this phrase was said over and over, and name the actor who played the character whose name was Hopper.

What a Way to Go!

Mr Dick Van Dyke owned Hopper's Dept Store and became a busy, busy mogul, much to wife Shirley MacClaine's displeasure.  His favorite phrase was "A little hard work never killed anybody" which he said many times - most memorably just before....he....dropped...dead!   ;D

I read that the French Quarter came through Katrina very well. There's a tiny bit of solace in that, I suppose.

Unfortuately, that good news has been overtaken by current events. New Orleans, as a city, is closed for ocupancy. A general evaucation order is in place, the levees have been breached, the water is still rising, the drinking water supply has been contaminated, there is no electricty, schools are expected to not open until November, major egresses are impasassable. We are looking at weeks, if not months, before people can return to the city.

Perhaps if you paid less attention to the Docs and more attention to the patients and their stories you would have enjoyed the show more.

Had to leave their pets behind!  So, sad and it isn't as if they didn't have time to plan for this.

Willy Ames with tattoos and a bad attitude.  Rodzinski and I have caught the occasional episode of Celebrity Fit Club II... lots of drama, not so much weight loss.

The tattoo thing surprised me.  Vanilla Ice was also covered with tattoos in the Sureal Life.  I wonder if it's an attempt to separate themselves from their former images.

LOL-true (except the romantic feelings are one sided)  but we love the show and Hugh Lurie is just terrific.  Such a fine actor.

And I would still like them to do "SURVIVOR: Big Jewish Wedding"

Preferably where at least one set of parents is divorced, one of the affianced is not Jewish, and a sibling of the bride is gay.

 ;D

SURVIVOR:The Co-Op Closing

Sellers must be in the middle of a nasty divorce and husband and wife are each accompaned by a divorce attorney who has neer done a real estate or co-op deal in their lives, the purchasers have forgotten to bring certified checks and their I.D., the purchasers' attorney is comparing the five photocopies of each of the 45 documents to see if they all match .  The co-op attorney has imposed a 90 minute limit on the closing and will bill an additional $100 per 20 minutes for any time over this.  The Divorce attorneys are requiring certified checks from the lender  however they have not advised the bank attorney of this fact until they are sitting at the closing table  an hour's drive away from  the bank attorney's bank branch which is by now closed anyway as the closing began after  3 PM. The real estate agents are trying to make contacts for future deals and interuppting and joking and leaning across the table and bringing in coffee  and drippingon the closing documents.  The mortgage broker is attempting to add secret hidden charges at the table.  The Bank is insisting on having copies of all the documents faxed over so they can approve them, before they will wire the money which won't show up until the next morning and noone at the bank is answering their phones, just voice mail on every extension and their fax machine is not picking up.  The copy machine gets a paper jam after every other page and the fax machine must be fed page by page.

NOW that's a reality show!!!

Oh wait.. no that's my life....... ::)

We are doing it as a two-act play, with the intermission following the exit of  two of the convicts to the garden to chaperone the couple, and me looking at Uncle Henri through the keyhole.

I haven't chimed in about the TOD, mmostly due to being so busy at work today, and mostly due to most of my favorite books already having been mentioned.

Not Since Carrie, the Mandelbaum book on Michael Bennett, the Chorus Line books...all good (not sure if I saw anyone mention "What They Did For Love" or "On the Line," but the others mentioned are also good).

There was a Barrymore bio a few years back...about all three of them...it was pretty enlightening.  (THE Barrymores, not Miss Drew)

I could re-read THE SEASON or the original SONDHEIM & CO. eternally.

In fact, before I ever actually reread my copy of SONDHEIM & CO., I gaze upon the personal inscription and autograph addressed to me by none other than Mr. BK's close personal friend, the subject of the book himself, Mr. Stephen Sondheim.  :)

In an episode of "Friends," Monica was preparing some food for a "food critic" played by Jon Lovitz.  She had done some "amuse bouches" and "onion tartlets"...but she was preparing only one course at a time.

Lovitz shows up with Phoebe who picked him up in her grandmother's cab.  Phoebe reports to Monica that he got stoned on the ride over.

He has the munchies.  The "amuse bouches" disappear.  He wants more and Monica says she will soon have some "onion tartlets".

"Tartlets"?

"Tartlets"?

Lovitz is hilarious in this.  He goes into the kitchen and finds a bag of gummi bears and decides to eat those.  Monica is determined he will eat only what she prepares.  It's an hysterical scene, IMO.

Maybe this shouldn't bother me, but I heard a newsperson and later a public official say about the hurricane: "This is our tsunami."

Why must we reference the devastation through a different tragedy? I heard this as well when the tubes were bombed in London. "This is their September 11."

They are wholly independent, incomparable events, awful enough in their reality that they don't need the added emotional baggage of a tie-in to another event.

But maybe that's just me. Mainly, I hope plentiful help is on the way.

I was totally not upset, though, for Jackson, even though I didn't think she should have won it so soon after "Women in Love."

Fortunately, Burstyn won for a terrific performance in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," but lost, to my continued dismay, for "Resurrection".  There was no finer performance by a woman in the 1980s than Burstyn in that role, IMO.

Since THE EXORCIST had been such a smash hit, I was expecting Burstyn. Woodward had won the NY Critics' Award, and Jackson and Mason had each won GOlden Globes in the Comedy and Drama categories, and Streisand was far and away the biggest female star at the box-office then, so it was a toss-up really about who would win. As it turned out, the one actress of the four who didn't attend the ceremony ended up winning. I think even Jackson was surprised she won when she heard the news.

Never heard of either of these books...and now I am on a quest.

A worthy quest - use Amazon to link to used book sellers - they are both out of print.

Thou Swell, Thou Witty has exhaustive Hart Lyrics and lots of marvelous photos from original stage productions.

B,B&B has lots of insights into the Rodgers and Hart relationship and is filled with extracts of interviews from contemporaries and is nicely footnoted.

Once again, curiosity got the better of me, and I had to know who beat Ellen Burstyn out for the Oscar when she was nominated for RESURRECTION.

The answer - Sissy Spacek for COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER. Tough call. That was also the year Mary Tyler Moore was up for ORDINARY PEOPLE, Goldie Hawn was up for PRIVATE BENJAMIN, and Gena Rowlands was nominated for GLORIA.

"This is our tsunami," Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway told the Biloxi Sun Herald.

I think the motivation behind the Tsunami reference is to attract public attention to the disaster in Mississippi, which though horrendus, is hiding under the even more devastaring (and photogenic) debacle in New Orleans.

As was true for the Tsunamis, it will be days before we get a fair reckoning of the extent of the disaster - and, I suspect, the Mayor of Biloxi fears his cities plight won't reach the hight of public awareness necessary to attrack the needed relief.

TOTD: The books to which I am most likely to refer - despite the fact that they are both so outdated - are Stanley Green's "The World Of Musical Comedy", and Arthur Jackson's "The Book Of Musicals". The latter includes a song list which has been handy to check the source of many "show songs".

Most of my other theatre related books have been mentioned by DR readers.

Richard Valley sent me this excerpt from his upcoming Rewind review - I can't wait to see the finished review.

"Bruce Kimmel has written his new novel, Rewind, with a laptop dipped in venom. The showbiz savvy story is the sort of work one might expect if the late literary master of suspense, Cornell Woolrich (creator of “Rear Window,” The Bride Wore Black, and I Married a Dead Man), had penned a column for Daily Variety or The Hollywood Reporter. Rewind is pure fiction, though—a happy happenstance, since any living, breathing person who found himself within its pages might drop on the spot and spend the next several years spinning in his grave."

I love me "Variety: Book of Show Business Awards"

I love all the Ethan Mordden books.

I love "Not Since Carrie."

I love all the Pictorial Histories (in widely varying degrees, of course, of movie studioes (MGM, Fox, Paramount, RKO, Columbia and WB).  The MGM book is best of them all...for content, visual aesthetics, etc.  The Fox book is plain and disappointing, visually, but invaluable as reference.

I love the oversized Hollywood Musicals book (glossy black dust jacket with color photo from "Barkleys of Broadway" on cover.

If I were you, Laura, I would warn those printer sales office people, that it isn't a good idea to mess with God!

As for the Gulf Coast.  My friend and I cried this morning at work while we watched some of the stories on the net this morning.

So much horror, pain and loss.  Not just for the humans but for the animals as well.  I saw the pictures of the baby chicks and it broke my heart to think that most of them will die because there is no way for any one to take care of them.

How scared the poor the dogs, cats and other pets must have been when they were left behind and those waves of water came through.

If that hurricane had turned...... but for the Grace of God, go I.... is all that I can think.

Good Evening!

I had a semi-productive bit of running around earlier.  I finally came up with a sort of clever idea for a flyer for myself, and after working it up on my computer, I headed down to Kinko's to get it printed up.

Thankfully, the printers were back on-line at the Columbus Circle location.  However, the guy behind the counter had a hard time understanding my request to buy some different colored papers.  "You want a ream?" -No, just 10 of each color.  "So, that's 10 reams?"  No.  Five colors, 10 sheets of each.  "Oh, OK.  So which colors did you want again?"  -Of course, he was "helping" me while he was talking sports scores and women with one of his co-workers.

At least the copier didn't jam.  And they also got two new fax machines.  Finally!
Title: Re:TICKLED PINK
Post by: JoseSPiano on August 30, 2005, 06:53:26 PM
...And then I decided to run off a few more copies at the Kinko's location by Penn Station since I was in the neighborhood.  Well... The copier jammed here.  Well, both of them jammed.  Thankfully, the jams were easy to clear on my own - and there was not a clerk in sight anyway.  At this location, the "special papers" are kept out in the open, so I pullled my colors and quantities.  However, once I went to the counter to pay for the special papers, the young woman behind the counter informed that if you pulled your own papers and ran them through the copier, then you've already paid for them.   Hmm...  -Well, I had to pay for them at the Columbus Circle location.  "Well, each location has different policies."  Hmm....  -I'm thinking the young lady just didn't want to expend the energy to run the sale through the register.

At least I know which Kinko's locations I'll be running off my flyers at in the future.

;)

In between Kinko's, I dropped by Chelsea Studios to put up my shingle so to speak.  Well, as soon as I stepped into the waiting area, I ran into the stage manager for the show I did up at Vassar a few weeks ago, Dangerous Beauty.  Jane was on her way to get a snack, they just started a break.  Turns out, she's stage managing Amanda McBroom's upcoming one-woman show, A Woman of Will (formerly titled Lady Macbeth Sings the Blues.  And since they were on a break, she brought me into the rehearsal room so that I could say HI to Amanda.  -Amanda is the lyricist for Dangerous Beauty.

Lots of hugs and hellos were exchanged.  Amanda then introduced me to her music director, Joel Silberman, and the young man playing the show for her here in New York, Sam Davis.  Well, it turns out that Sam has a few conflicts, and they've just begun looking for subs.  Well...  I'll be getting a schedule sometime in the next couple of days.

:)

And it turns out that the composer for Dangerous Beauty, Michelle Brourman, is also in New York City right now, so we'll all be getting together for dinner sometime soon too.

:)

Let the games begin.

On the "Let's celebrate the tacky" front...

There's a restaurant on the highway called Crabby Dick's.  They're usually known for posting semi-lewd slogans on their sign out front, lots of less-than-double entendres, which have generated a number of protesting letters in the local paper.

They're taking a new tact in their signage, with the current situation in Louisiana and Mississippi in mind.  They're advertising their new drink special...on Hurricanes.

After that, I put in the DVD of THE MUSIC MAN. Since both GYPSY and THE MUSIC MAN were filmed in Technirama and released in 1962, and because I was SO impressed with the GYPSY transfer on DVD, I wanted to see what THE MUSIC MAN looked like on a bigger screen.

In a word, it looked just fine, very sharp and artifact free, but I think GYPSY's transfer has it beaten by a mile. There is just something that's a touch richer about the color, the depth of focus, the lighting that makes it stand out on my TV more than THE MUSIC MAN.

Still, I got drawn right into the story and songs for 1 1/2 hours until RESCUE ME came on. I'll see about finishing it tomorrow.

RESCUE ME has two more original episodes before its second season concludes. Tonight seemed more of a walking-in-place kind of episode with not much happening in terms of furthering the story. One momentous thing did happen in terms of someone's wealth increasing, but other than that, it was not one of the season's better episodes.

Gasoline:  $2.79 per gallon.  Whew!

That's the one thing I'm scared of when I head back home this weekend.  I haven't had to fill up a tank of gas in seven weeks.  And in that seven weeks, gas prices have jumped about 50 cents. So...

In honor of my Patti LuPone sighting earlier today, how about a nice Tap Break - like the one in the revival of Anything Goes.

By my calculations the equivalent price of gas here in OZ (includes quite a lot of tax) is about $7 USA a gallon.  And yes it hurts.

It's almost time for bed...but I need to wind down a bit from watching BB6, which -- even though I knew about everything I saw -- got me all riled up actually seeing the moronic cretins exude the worst sportsmanship traits I've ever seen on TV.

Janelle is lucky, and smart, and has won some major prizes on the show.

And the MCs (moronic cretins) hate her because of it and resent her and keep declaring that if only she weren't there then THEY would get the loot.

I was yelling at my TV set the entire hour...and laughing like a loon.

An hour before BB6, I was prepping a late supper.  I put a 2-lb. pork loin roast in my upright rotisserie and let it cook for an hour.  I then made a plate of "Potatoes Anna" to accompany the pork.

Quelle feast!

My left nostril remains clogged while my right nostril is breathing free and easy.

I hate these "sensitivities."

Another recent acquisition tickles my fancy -- I got the 45 rpm "Captain From Castile" in a minty cover...quite a nice addition to a small, but well-preserved collection of 45 rpm soundtracks.

My holy grail is the "Madame Bovary" 45 rpm record -- but I have never seen one offered anywhere.  Just saw a picture of one in a collector's guide.

Gasoline:  $2.79 per gallon.  Whew!

Regular gas here in Oakland is about $2.99.9,  Premium is $3.49. and Extra is $3.29.9.   At least, those were the prices at the Shell Station I pass on my way to work.

Gas prices are routinely higher in the Bay Area than anywhere else in California.

By my calculations the equivalent price of gas here in OZ (includes quite a lot of tax) is about $7 USA a gallon.  And yes it hurts.

We are routinely reminded that elsewhere in the world, gas prices are significantly higher and that we are going to see ours go up accordingly.

In Europe, gas is heavily taxed, and those taxes maintain a superb transportation infrastructure.  Here, they maintain lifestyles of the rich and overindulged capitalists.  Our infrastructure, like our educational system, is rotting.

I'd guess our price per gallon is only fractionally taxed (less than 10%, I'd guess).  Our trouble is corporate greed.  So...I'm guessing that when we get up to $5 or $6 a gallon, the government (local/state or federal) will increase the taxes accordingly and we'll then pay $7 to $8 a gallon.

It's currently F75 degrees outside.  Whew!  The high today was F 80 and two hours after sunset, the temp has dropped only 5 degrees.

The "expected" low tonight is F 55.  That means something mysterious may happen in the wee hours...something that will creep in upon us on cat feet.

I hate my month "electricity" bill of $90...no frills.  No AC running.  Only a window fan.

But that's the price we have to pay here in the state that doesn't produce its own power and has to purchase it from out of state.

I've gone through my e-mail...both my home e-mail and my work e-mail, which I can access from home.

Oddly, even though I'd cleaned out my home e-mail around 5:30 p.m., there were 30 messages.  THIRTY!  I normally have 10-15.

What has happened?  I pondered.

What on earth? I exclaimed.

What the hell?  I fumed.

Then it hit me square in the face.

My mother, having returned from her trip Sunday night, was just catching up on her e-mails (and she gets hundreds of cutesy e-mails from a variety of people).  She weeds through them, but I get what's left...and I had a weeks' worth in my inbox...or, at least, about 14.

Sigh.

My work e-mail, which unfortunately yields a bit of spam on a daily basis, had three messages, all of which were legit and harmless.

Anyone?

No?

Oh, well.  She's ranting in the background while I type.  She gets bleeped so much, I have to wonder why Bravo bothers airing her show.

I mean, is she really saying anything worse than you can hear on South Park, which never gets bleeped on The Comedy Channel?

I like it that she's fearless about what she says about other celebrities.

She lets fly with stuff everyone whispers about.

And I'm guessing that makes her very unpopular in some circles.

But I get a grin from her!

And only Matthew and I here to make it happen.

That's interesting, Ron.  I've been signed on since earlier this evening.  I've called up other browsers and did some other on-line stuff (which reminds me that I have bills to pay and most are on-line), but I never closed the browser with HHW.  Yet, it seems that I wasn't seen as being "on" HHW.  Oh, well.

Anyway, I watched "Reno 911."  Funny as ever. ;D

And I love Kathy Griffin!  I think her husband is cute no matter what weight he is. ;) But I think that she's funny and real.  I don't feel like get the sense that she's a loser.  The audience at "Kathy Griffin Is...Not Nicole Kidman" loves her!  I really like her conversational style of joke telling...not really jokes, more like monologues or literally just a conversation that you're part of and it's hysterical. ;D
