Title: THE HOCKEY PUCK OF LIFE
Post by: bk on August 31, 2005, 12:07:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you feel like scoring a goal with the hockey puck of life because of the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're playing hockey right now, and they can't be bothered now.

In just a few short postings we shall achieve our new plateau of 140,000 posts.  That is an amazing way to end August and begin September, if you ask me.

And now - Dino at the piano.

The Attack of the WUSSBURGERS continues.  Guess we won't achieve our new plateau until morning.

I can also tell you that if we have a strong day of posting, our new plateau will not be the only plateau we achieve.

Good morning, all!  I'm fighting depression for the past cople of days.  I want to stay in bed and avoid/postpone everything.  Accomplishing anything for the past two days has been a chore, and today I have to play the Shakespeare Festival ticket game for TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA.  I'd rather go back to bed.

Yesterday, at the NYPL Theatre Collection, I saw Ms Bebe Neuwirth with a very handsome young man.  She was asking about watching something, CHICAGO, I think.

DRDanise, that's one lovely rose!

Good morning my friends. I must get to work since Friday is a half day. I will leave around 11:30am and we are closed Monday. No work on Saturday (hoo and ray). We will be on Long Island (Anthony is leaving today) from Friday to Monday. Next week after we return Anthony will begin physical therapy for his foot injury. In case I haven't mentioned, it's called Plantar Facitis (sp), an injury involving swelling and streching of the Plantar muscle/tendon on the bottom of the foot. It seems to have been caught early (though it could have been caught even earlier if he had gone to the doctor a week before he went) so the prognosis is good. It takes a lot of time to "heal" anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months depending on the severity of the problem. He will start having ultrasound treatments on Friday September 9th.

And with that, I'm off to work without questions.

Later.

Yesterday when I left work the price for regular gas price at the corner station  $2.69.  I, however , was late leavin gthe office and had to get the Vixter to her singing lesson, so although dangerously low, I didn't stop to fill up.  What a mistake to make!!  Today's price: $3.29!!!!!!!!

Now does anyone here believe that the gas coming out of the pump at 7:00 AM today isn't  the same gas that was in the holding tank yesterday evening at 6:30 PM?

I agree with you, DR Dan (the Man). I think THE BELLE OF AMHURST affected me the most deeply of the one person shows I've seen.

I also admired MARK TWAIN TONIGHT and STEVIE was almost a one person show, but Mona Washbourne was memorable, too, as a cohort of Glenda Jackson's.

I also saw Robert Morse on Broadway as TRU. I admired the emotion of the performance, but I never once believed I was watching Truman Capote because he didn't do ENOUGH of an impression of the man for my satisfaction.

Another "hottish" day looms.  We did, indeed, cool down overnight.  At 2:30 a.m., I arose and did a nasal wash (yes! I had to share that!), and I thought it still a tad warmish.  But around 4 a.m., I pulled up my blankie and snuggled into my pillow.

I agree completely. Amazing that she didn't get an Oscar nomination for it, but won lots of critics' awards anyway.

Of course, I always thought she was superb in everything I saw her do. Still laugh when I think about her and Sandy Dennis in NASTY HABITS.

It's past "warmish" here. Already in the 80s before noon, and the humidity made getting the newspaper this morning and my mail a minute ago a miserable (if brief) experience.

Matthew (and other Aspects of Love fans), a program note for you.

As I've said many times I listen to the BBC a lot! One of the programs features Elaine Paige playing music from theatre and film. Each week she features what she calls an "essential musical" On Sunday September 4th she will be featuring Aspects of Love.

Here is the link to the program.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/paige/

You can go there Sunday or any time after that (for one week through Sunday September 11th) and listen to the program via the Internet. You need Real Player on your computer. Click on Listen Again to This Show and the player will open, the program will load and voila, you can have your Aspects fix. You can listen to the show this week (which features duets) if you like to see how the whole thing works.

As Stuart said, just doing my part  ;D

Wow, it's raining pretty hard here.  Hopefully there will be no floods on the expressways.  They were predicting 50-70mm of rain (i have never seen it predict more than 15mm so this is a lot).

Btw, for those Big Brother fans, not much new on last night's show.  But they didn't even show the one nice thing that April did.  She went to tell James before the veto meeting that she was going to nominate him.

I know they couldn't show this (because then the viewers wouldn't be shocked). But i wish they could have found a way to include it.  Also, I was surprised that they didn't really show that maggie/april were thinking about going back on their promise (to janelle/howie). They showed them say "trust me", but then didn't show when they were deciding whether to break their word.  I really don't think that at this point any of the fans will like the Friendship more, so why bother with this kind editing.

I agree, Ivette looked like a poor sport. Although i'm wondering if we were supposed to have sympathy for her.  I think on its own, i might have felt sorry for her.  But not after the crap she has pulled.

Good gravy! Looking at the list of DVDs for next week. I will be in the PO' HOUSE!

The Garbo Collection - cheaper to buy the whole box rather than the five I want from the box (and the box contains GRAND HOTEL already released as a single; I HATE it when Warners does this).

ROCKY & BULLWINKLE Season 3.

THE STING and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD in those Legacy Editions.

Argh!

Question for DR RonP, Cillaliz, Mbarnum or anyone else still watching Big Brother.

What do you think Ivette should do? re: voting

What do you think Janelle whould do?

To me if Ivette keeps james it would be good (because he is strong and would take out maggie/april while keeping Iv safe. However, she would maybe lose her Friendship votes and betray her friends.  But would it take her farther in the game?

As for Janelle, I do not think she would betray howie.  But i wonder if her and james would have a better chance to get to the end. I don't see her trusting james though. Since he is also partnered with Iv.  But it would be interesting to see James/Janelle screw over the others and get to the end.

BB6:

To answer Jennifer's questions:

I think Maggie made it perfectly clear to her in the footage we saw on last night's show that any support of James by her would be seen as betrayal of the friendship.

Janelle would not get anywhere with James.  James is out for himself only.  I think he'd betray Ivette to save Janelle because he believes he is the lesser of two evils in the eyes of the voting jury.

Janelle would no more vote against Howie than she would dye her hair blue.  James is finished.  Done.  Toast.  He's flailing about and making statements that have no grounding in possibility.  Beau will not vote to evict Howie and Janelle won't, either.  Ivette is the only person in the house who would vote to save him.

If James survives the vote this week, he WILL get to the end.  But Janelle won't.  He must continue to nourish his alliance with Ivette and Ivette wants Janelle gone, as does April and as does Maggie.  That's a whole lot of people wanting her gone.  They'd rather Howie get to the end than Janelle.

I have a simple question to dear BK at the end of August and the beginning of September.

I tend not to write "just songs" so much these days, but I used to do it quite often.  The song "Simply" which I used in What If, and which I put in the stage version of Nudie Musical, was really written just as a song three years ago, and I'm writing this little thing for Caitlynne.  I tend to do both music and lyrics at the same time, but frequently I'll be noodling at the piano and I'll come up with some tune or chord progression and it will all happen very fast after that.

I haven't looked at the packaging since we did the album, but my memory is that Davis was credited somewhere, and I can't imagine why he wouldn't be on the inlay card with the song list.  And since that album had many printings, I can't imagine that if he were left off that it wouldn't have been fixed.  Is yours on Varese?

Yesterday Ron Pulliam opined:

Quote
I'd guess our price per gallon is only fractionally taxed (less than 10%, I'd guess).  Our trouble is corporate greed.  So...I'm guessing that when we get up to $5 or $6 a gallon, the government (local/state or federal) will increase the taxes accordingly and we'll then pay $7 to $8 a gallon.

His guess of less than 10% misses the mark.
The current national average is over 20%, more in CA.

Most of the taxes on gasoline are cents/gallon, so as the price of gasoline rises, the percentage of taxes component decreases. In 2002 when the avg price of gas was $1.65, the average tax percentage was 31%.

Federal taxes are 18.4 cents per gallon and CA excise taxes add an additional 18 cents per gallon - all these funds go into highway trust funds earmarked for infrastructure improvements. In CA the state then adds a 7.25% sales tax (which goes to the General Fund), and indivual counties add up to an additional 1.25% sales tax which is usually earmarked for transportation projects.

Had our Federal and State government levied their gasoline taxes as a percentage rather than a fixed cents/gallon (which would have made more sense), then our highway trust funds could have kept up with the infrastructure demands - the Federal Interstates are fast becoming an embarassment! Compounding the highway funding picture is the fact that as cars get better mileage, the government collects fewer dollars per mile driven.

As to the fears of rising pump prices stimualting a grab for higher taxes, the opposite has been true - as pump prices rise, consumers (voters) are clamoring for the government to reduce the taxes!

If you want to point a finger a coporate greed as a factor in CA gasoline prices - don't look at the the Oil companies, aim for the midwest farmers and ADM who pressured the Feds to make CA use corn-based ethanol even thouhgh the state refineries could create gasoline that met all state and federal emission requirements without it! Here in DE, we feed corn to the chickens, in CA the feds make you feed corn to the Chevvy!

Yesterday Jane made mention of a bus tour from Munich to Salzburg, which DP Woody remarked that we had taken.

He failed to mention that the "bus trip" also included a boat excursion across a sparkling Austrain Lake to the beutiful and pisturesque town of St.Wolfgang.

In my role as typical American Tourist, I shall not regale you with lovely photos of some of God's finer creations, rather I shall be self-indulgent and show you ME - on the boat to St. Wolfgang.

I'm still IMpatiently waiting for the Judy and Mickey set.

And the Andy Hardy set.

Since THE THIN MAN was such a big hit, I wonder if they couldn't make some $$$ with more series sets: MAISIE, DR. KILDARE, ANDY HARDY.

No, those films didn't have the production values of THE THIN MAN films which were A-films and not done with B-unit budgets and shooting schedules. But they're still very entertaining.

Yes, a Mickey-Judy boxed set is sadly lacking. Are those minstrel shows in the two BABES movies the reason they aren't being released?

She is not alone in bringing the Almighty into the debate:

Quote
PHILADELPHIA - Just days before "Southern Decadence", an annual homosexual celebration attracting tens of thousands of people to the French Quarters section of New Orleans, an act of God destroys the city.

"Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city," stated Repent America director Michael Marcavage. "From ‘Girls Gone Wild’ to ‘Southern Decadence’, New Orleans was a city that opened its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. May it never be the same," he continued.

New Orleans is also known for its Mardi Gras parties where thousands of drunken men revel in the streets to exchange plastic jewelry for drunken women to expose their breasts. This annual event sparked the creation of the "Girls Gone Wild" video series.

"Let us pray for those ravaged by this disaster. However, we must not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long," Marcavage said. "May this act of God cause us all to think about what we tolerate in our city limits, and bring us trembling before the throne of Almighty God," Marcavage concluded.

For DRs Jane, TomovOz and anyone else with pets:

When Miss Vickie passed, I opted for cremation and return to me of her ashes.  I got the ashes on Friday.  They were in a small cedar box with a lock and keys.

I cannot begin to tell you how comforting it was to put that box on the table by my favorite chair.  It is maudlin and sappy and I don't care.  It helps a great deal.

I still plan, at Christmas, to take her ashes to SC and mix them into the soil above the grave of another beloved cat.

I am having dinner with a former co-worker this evening.  He is probably the most avid "cat person" I know.  His former wife and he "share" custody of a geriatric cat, although the cat resides with her.  This cat is now on IV saline treatments every other day and he must assist her (he has remarried...and they have two cats "together"!).

I had 9 bags of "lactated ringers' (that's saline solution to the uninitiated), along with the IV tubes and needles that I'm giving to him.  (One bag is good for about a week or week and a half of IV treatments). Had I not known of anyone who needed them, I'd probably have donated them to my vet's office.

Yes, my copy is on Varese, I believe I purchased it when it was released.  I double checked and there is no mention of Davis Gaines except in Laurie's "thank you's" but not ascociated with "Amigos Para Siempre" (which I LOVE this arrangement, quite an improvement on the original).

Mine is still, after all these years, The Belle of Amherst, starring Julie Harris.

I've seen tours of Mark Twain Tonight and Say Goodnight, Gracie here in Olympia.  The one time I went to New York, I bought a ticket from someone standing in front of the theater where Robeson was playing.  Fortunately, the ticket was for Robeson. ;) Anyway, that show with Avery Brooks was absolutely incredible.  It was just three hours of Avery telling and singing the life of Paul Robeson.  Truly one of the highlights of my trip...and one of the best theater experiences that I'd ever had. ;D

Ah - I don't mind "one person" shows about celebrites, in fact I directed one.  I guess I like them best when they are about people I don't know much about.  It seems to me that a show about Katharine Hepburn would mostly be a rehash of stuff we know.

My favorite one-person show....really....was an evening about Pearl Buck played by Miss Valerie Harper.  Of course if you're not interested in Pearl Buck, you'd best stay away.

I like STATE FAIR from '62 as well.  There was a great article in an issue of FILMFAX about the filming of it, DR RLP.  And some photos of the locations looking mighty forlorn and deserted in the 1980's.

Saw it at the drive-in many years ago, and that Ann-Margret sure was something.  She and Pat Boone actually made a nice screen couple, and Pamela Tiffin and Bobby Darin were okay, too.   Tiffin was a bit clumsy in her acting, and her accent wasn't so hot, but she was beee-yoooo-teee-full!!!

Oh and the soundtrack is available on CD!  Produced by BK Compatriot Nick Redman, I think.  It doesn't have everything though, I like the DOT LP as well.  You need both.  ;D

I've been seeing THE PIRATE MOVIE a lot lately on FMC, so I bet it is coming soon to DVD. This movie is objectively preposterous, and yet for some reason quite entertaining. Chris Atkins has to be one of the lamest actors. And yet Kristy McNichol and the Pirate King are quite in the right spirit of things.

ALL OHIO based HHWers keep an eye  (and banana) peeled!!

Quote
SPRINGDALE, Ohio - The bulletin issued by police in the southwest Ohio town of Springdale describes the subject as two feet tall, weighing eight pounds, clad only in blue pants and prone to sleeping in trees.

Dillion, a circus monkey, fled into a nearby woods early on Monday after being frightened by a train whistle from tracks near where the circus was performing in Springdale, in northern Hamilton County.

Trainer Philip Hendricks, who is part of the Hendricks Brothers Circus, says Dillion, who has a white face, brown body and is wearing a leash, is usually confident in new surroundings but the train whistle sent him scurrying.

The circus is leaving town Thursday morning and Hendricks is worried that his monkey won't be found before then.

Hendricks suggests that anyone who spots Dillion try to lure him with food. He's fond of apples, oranges, nuts, berries -- and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I notice something unusual every time I watch "The Thin Man," then forget to mention it to anyone.

At one point during the proceedings, Myrna's "Nora" says something about a person who is suspected of a crime, and she refers to him as a "suh-SPECT" rather than a "suhs'pect".  William Powell's "Nick" pronounces it shortly afterward in the same way.

I don't believe either uses that pronunciation in later films if, in fact, they ever use the word again.

I watched a PBS episode of a BBC show last night called "Rosemary and Thyme" (a rather goodish mystery), and to fill the hour (roughly 10 minutes), a short film was shown called "Posh Nosh".

It was HYSTERICAL.  A husband and wife do a cooking show.  She's all friendly and accommodating (and clueless about him) and he's all gay and snippy and snobbish (and dismissive of her in all respects).

He made a comment about an ingredient, saying it "was as moist and firm as Tom Cruise after a hot bath."

Truly hysterically funny, that show!

Briton Finds Venomous Centipede in House
Wednesday, August 31, 2005

LONDON — Aaron Balick expected to find a tiny mouse rustling behind the TV in his apartment. Instead, he found a venomous giant centipede that somehow hitched a ride from South America  to Britain.

"Thinking it was a mouse, I went to investigate the sound. The sound was coming from under some papers which I lifted, expecting to see the mouse scamper away," the 32-year-old psychotherapist said Wednesday. "Instead, when I lifted the papers, I saw this prehistoric looking animal skitter away behind a stack of books."

He trapped the 9-inch-long creature between a stack of books and put it in a plastic container.

The next day he took it to Britain's Natural History Museum, which identified the insect as a Scolopendra gigantea  — the world's biggest species of centipede.

Some DR will no doubt suggest a recipe!

A man goes into a pet shop and tells the owner that he wants a
pet that can do everything. The owner says "How about a dog?"
The man replies, "Come on, a dog?" The owner says, Well, Okay
How about a cat?" The man replies, "No way! A cat certainly can't
do everything. I want a pet that can do everything!"
So the owner thinks for a minute, then says, "I've got it! A centipede!"
The man says, "A centipede? I can't imagine a centipede doing everything,
but okay... I'll try a centipede."

He gets the centipede home and says to the centipede, "Clean the kitchen."
Thirty minutes later, he walks into the kitchen and...it's immaculate.
All the dishes and silverware have been washed, dried,and put away;
the counter-tops cleaned; the appliances sparkling; the floor waxed.
He's absolutely amazed.

He says to the centipede, "Go clean the living room."
Twenty minutes later, he walks into the living room.
The carpet has been vacuumed; the furniture cleaned and dusted;
the pillows on the sofa plumped; plants watered. The man thinks to himself,
"This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. This really is a pet that can
do everything."

He says to the centipede, "Run down to the corner and get me a newspaper."
The centipede walks out the door. 10 minutes later... no centipede. 20 minutes
later... no centipede. 30 minutes later... no centipede. The man is wondering
what's going on. The centipede should have been back in a couple of minutes.
45 minutes later... still no centipede! Did the centipede run away?
Where is that centipede??

He goes to the front door, opens it ... and there is the centipede
sitting right outside. The man says, "Hey!!! I sent you down to the corner
45 minutes ago to get me a newspaper. What's the story?!"

The centipede says,"I'm goin'! I'm goin'! I'm just puttin' on my shoes!

From this morning's Cincinnati Enquirer:

SPRINGDALE

Runaway monkey returned to owner

Dillion the missing circus monkey was re-united with his owner on Tuesday after spending the night on the lam in Springdale. The 2-foot, 8-pound Capuchin monkey was spotted by his owner's friend around 2 p.m. huddled in the roof area of a picnic pavilion at General Electric Park. "He was damp and hungry and I think happy to see me," said his trainer, Philip Hendricks, who is part of the Hendricks Bros. Circus. "He came running right up to me." The circus was performing this week in the park. Dillion ran off Monday when he was startled by a train whistle and leapt off Hendricks' shoulder. "We're very lucky. There's so much traffic here," he said

(Now you all can sleep tonight  ;))

Has anyone heard form TCB?

 News form WA State (http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/005/985pgwjh.asp)

Quote
A WASHINGTON MAN died recently from internal injuries he sustained while having sex with a horse. After his body was dropped off at a hospital, police discovered that out-of-towners had rented a rural farm and then made local animals available for use in bestiality. Yes, video taping was involved.

This disgusting story should have had a quick ending with the arrests of the operators of the human/animal sex farm and their swift punishment. However, police discovered that there is no law against bestiality in Washington. So, even though a man is dead from a very intimate injury, even though police confiscated hundreds of graphic videotapes of people having sex with animals, apparently nothing is to be done about it.
Enter Republican state Senator Pam Roach, who announced plans to introduce legislation in the next legislative session to make it a felony in Washington to commit bestiality. "I found out that Washington is one of the few states in the country that doesn't outlaw this activity," she told me. "This has made Washington a Mecca for bestiality. People know it isn't against the law and so they come from other states to have sex with animals."

Read the full article for the pros and cons of this vital debate!  Yes, Virgina, there are those arguing FOR man-horse sex.

But, my favorite exerpt is:

Quote
...writes of attending a conference and speaking to a woman who had been sexually assaulted by an orangutan while visiting an animal rehabilitation center. When she called out for help, the operator of the facility, a woman named Birute Galdikas, told the distraught woman not to worry because orangutans are not well endowed.

I'm trying very hard to visualize Ms Birute Galdikas!

And whom shall we cast is the role for the musical of "Heavy Petting'?

This statement in the article caught my attention:

<<BOTH JAMIESON AND ROACH (and a very mild Post Intelligencer editorial supporting Roach) miss the true nub of what makes this repugnant issue so important. Bestiality is so very wrong not only because using animals sexually is abusive, but because such behavior is profoundly degrading and utterly subversive to the crucial understanding that human beings are unique, special, and of the highest moral worth in the known universe--a concept known as "human exceptionalism.">>

Not to be too oafish about the seriousness of what is being discussed in the article, but this last statement makes it very clear that the writer has never seen an episode of "Jerry Springer" or watched "Big Brother 6."

And I've known animals of intrinsically higher moral worth than "some" humans I've either known or seen in action.

It is a great comfort.  Echo is the first pet whose ashes we have scattered.  I wish we had done so all along.  Bogie joined his sister in a rose garden.  We took Echo up to Mt. Ashland and left her in one of her favorite little streams of water.  There is a rock there I can sit on and think of her while I enjoy the view.

Yes, a Mickey-Judy boxed set is sadly lacking. Are those minstrel shows in the two BABES movies the reason they aren't being released?

I remember seeing a Mickey and Judy movie with a minstrel number on TV (regular cable, even!), just within the last year or so.  If they can show it on regular (non-digital) cable, then why not release it (them) on DVD?

When I got in from lunch, I finished THE MUSIC MAN. COntinued to look very lovely and such a clean transfer. I still think GYPSY is the more astonishing DVD of the two in terms of transfer quality, sharpness, depth of color, etc.

When "Lida Rose" and "Did I Ever Tell You?" are being sung simultaneously, the sound guys shift Shirley's voice to the right speaker and the Buffalo Bills to the left speaker with the orchestra in the surround speakers. Nice effect.

After THE MUSIC MAN finished, I put in DARLING.

In their infinite "wisdom" (read stupidity), MGM released the film letterboxed but not enhanced for widescreen TVs. Still, it's a very sharp transfer and looks really wonderful. The mono sound is quite tinny, of course, but it's still an entertaining film. The camera really loved Julie Christie.

Um, I didn't mean that to sound like she's dead or no longer working. I'm sure she'll be prominent in the next HARRY POTTER film, but when she was a fresh face in those mid-60s films she made, she was dazzling to look at. I can see why John Schlesinger used her so often then.

There is another day trip that takes one on a quaint ride thru German countryside to a beautiful (but a tad commercial villiage) at the foot of a very large ALP. Re people with old pictures as their avatars:  When I finally get around to getting a scanner, I'm going to use the ID that fueled this story at unemployment.  (Have I told this story before?  And has this ever happened to anyone else here?)

We'd just been shown a video on self-esteem when we go looking for another job.  I handed the clerk my ID (a few years younger and - ahem - several pounds lighter).  She looked at the photo, looked at me, looked at the photo again, looked at me, and said loudly enough for the whole room to hear  "Boy, this is a REALLY good picture of you!"  This after we'd just been shown that video on self-esteem.  The clerk's compatriot, realizing her co-worker had just unwittingly insulted me, followed up with, "Oh, oh, oh, you look fine now, too.  I love yer hair!"

Happily, unenployment doesn't require personal appearnces any more.

Anyway, I now feel no guilt about planning to use that picture as my avatar when I get around to learning to scan.  :)

I just got Richard Valley's complete Rewind review for Scarlet Street.  Here's my two favorite paragraphs:

Like ALL ABOUT EVE (1950), Rewind’s story is told from the unique viewpoints of several characters. Unlike ALL ABOUT EVE, several of the characters are, by the time they reach the conclusion of their individual reminiscences, no longer among the living. (Paging Joe Gillis from that other 1950 showbiz saga, SUNSET BLVD.)

and

Who lives? Who dies? And when, where, and why? That’s only half the fun, the other half being a real insider’s look at the flip side of the record business. Not since Betty Hutton belted out “Murder, He Said” has a musical body count been as irresistible as Rewind.

DR Ron.  I know you mentioned the Georgia Gibbs recording of "Hucklebuck" a few times. I've never heard it and associate the song with Chubby Checker. Georgia's version did make the USA top 100 and was not issued here that I know of. We did get to hear her "Hula Hoop" ditty though. I don't think I've ever heard either the Tommy Dorsey or Frank Sinatra versions of "Hucklebuck" from 1949.

I'm taking goddaughter Charlotte to Central Park tonight for her first show at the Delacorte, TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA with Rosario Dawson and my friend Don Stephenson.  since i saw and loved the original in 1972, I hope this is at least half as wonderful.  I have yet to see a revival in New York that comes close to the original.

Of course, with my current mood and luck this week, we'll be rained out.

DR TomovOz:  Somewhere in storage, I have a 45 rpm of Georgia Gibbs' "Hucklebuck."

I played it and played it and played it all during the early 60s.  I remember listening to it again sometime in the 70s.  I haven't listened to it since, though.

And I'm waxing nostalgic lately...

Have been thinking about "Venus in Blue Jeans" for some reason.  Maybe Bobby Vinton knows why.  I don't.

Good Afternoon!

How come no one told me until about 30 minutes ago that today was Wednesday and not Thursday?!?!?  I've been running around today like it was tomorrow already.  But at least I got some stuff done.

I'm back at my apartment right now since the "last minute" set of auditions I got called in for were cancelled due to train issues - all the members of the production staff are delayed about four hours in Philly.

So...

DR elmore - I'll be calling your shortly.

Then...the balancing got broken or something....

I think it would be in Ivette's best interest to keep James and vote out Howie...but unless the others will vote for Howie, then she had better stick with the majority.

If James stays then I can see Ivette and Beau making it to the end.

Unfortunately I don't want to see either James nor Howie leave.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am REALLY excited about the upcoming pre-Broadway run at San Francisco's Curran Theater of the Elton John-Bernie Taupin "Lestat."

It starts around Dec. 17 and runs through late January, with a Spring 2006 bow on Broadway (if all goes well).

With John and Taupin working on this, I expect a lot.

Anyone else here an Anne Rice/Vampire Lestat fan(atic)?

I'm looking forward to this too, not because it's about vampires, but because it's Elton and Bernie.  Perhaps we could have a Bay Area HHW gathering.... of 2?

Well, I certainly am looking forward to the show.  If all goes well in San Francisco, there's a very good chance I will be in the pit for the show when it comes to Broadway.

:)

*And with a cast with the likes of Hugh Panaro, Carolee Carmello, Jim Stanek (looking surprisingly sexy in the publicity photos), jack Noseworthy, etc...  It should sound great too.

Not looking good for doing the demo today, which is actually really upsetting, as I've been trying to do it for a week.  Grant was supposed to be home by two, and he still isn't back.  Then he'll be too tired and he'll try to push it until tomorrow or Friday, but tomorrow I have a hair appointment, and then, if the CDs are ready, I have to go get those and start shipping them.  I really loathe when people don't do what they say they're going to do.

I just wish I knew how to scan.  One of the jokes in my office is that my resume clearly says I co-majored in computers, but that was late 1970's, and I can't do anything computer-related that has any use in modern times.  Luckily, I'm good at taxes or else I'd be up the creek.

The scanner which sits on my desk turned out to have been long since broken when Skip tried to use it a few months ago.  But it is an attractive piece of furniture, so I don't want to get rid of it.   :)

Re: Julie Christie:
Um, I didn't mean that to sound like she's dead or no longer working. I'm sure she'll be prominent in the next HARRY POTTER film, but when she was a fresh face in those mid-60s films she made, she was dazzling to look at. I can see why John Schlesinger used her so often then.
None of the major action in Goblet of Fire or Order of the Phoenix takes place in Hogsmead, where Madame Rosemerta's inn is located.  Therefor, Julie Christie will not be appearing in the films based on those books.

We can, however, count on her appearing in the film to be based on Half-Blood Prince.  (But no, she is not the HBP, if you'll forgive my giving that spoiler.)

There's a fairly good...no, great...pic of me on that same Alp as the pic of der B.  We'll have to find it.

I refuse to have pics of me from earlier than that posted, because we are tasteful here at HHW.

As for that Alp, der B and I were totally crazy getting out there.  There was a section just off of the main area, where people could climb via rungs hammered into the rock and a single rope to cling to.  Given my fear of heights, I still don't know how we got out there or back.  One mis-step, and one or the other of us could easily have rapidly ended back at the scenic (but touristy) village back at the bottom of the hill, but not necessarily in one piece.  Or two, even.

Here in Washington State, it is done by the Humane Society, but arranged through your own vet.  You have to specify that you wish to have the ashes returned to you.

My cats cost about $100.00 a piece for cremation and the return to me in a very nice little urn.

Here in Washington State, it is done by the Humane Society, but arranged through your own vet.  You have to specify that you wish to have the ashes returned to you.

My cats cost about $100.00 a piece for cremation and the reuturn to me in a very nice little urn.

Thanks, DR TCB.  But here is my next question.  Will they come and pick the body up?  Bear is way beyond my being able to lift him.

Sorry to be so full of gloom.  I just saw the posts about it and have wondered.

Dr Danise - I'm hoping I can get away from the family Rosh Hashanah festivities to join the group on that Wednesday evening.  I'm sorry I'm going to miss the walking tour, though.

MBarnum you are so sweet.

TCB is that you?  When was the photo taken?

Jose we don’t need your baby picture to see the resemblance to your nephew.  I want to see it, just don’t need to.

Danise no need to worry, we knew what you meant by “the grace of God”.

On the first day, it's the tradition of throwing the sins away into the water, which takes us to very late afternoon.  But Oct. 5th is the second day, so we'll just be having the usual festive meal, which usually happens around 2-ish, after which my parents like to promenade with us on the Coney Island boardwalk so that they can show their friends that their kids came to visit them on the holiday.  But I'm sure I'll be back in the city by seven or so.  Will the get-together still be going on then, or will people have left to go see shows at that point?

I suggest you ask your vet these questions as the prices and procedures differ from vet to vet, area to area.  I think ours were $40 or $50.  I can’t be sure.  Our wonderful vet is just building a practice so with the last two pets we just sent her a very nice donation and said to take out the final costs and put the rest in her Angel fund.  This fund is to help those pets whose owners can’t afford the cost of treatment.

I have never had a pet just go.  We have always made the decision to stop the suffering.  That used to mean a stressful trip to the veterinarians office.  Now it means a request to have the vet come here.  Our vet didn’t charge an extra fee for this.  I don’t know if that is her usual procedure for patients or just for special ones.  She came with the vet technician (in this case our house sitter).  I had a box ready for Bogie.  Echo was carried away on a blanket with many of her favorite toys, which were also cremated with her.

Since we lost Echo in the winter and couldn’t take her to the trail on Mt Ashland until spring I preferred to leave her at the vet’s office.  I found it too painful to have her here.  Her ashes were in a plastic bag tied shut.  The bag was inside of a tin.

When Tashlich, the throwing-away-of-sins, is in Brooklyn, they actually send some members of the congregation to the water at the beach to symbolically throw some bread in the water, while the rest of us say a little prayer on the boardwalk.  But I think they're required to take the bread out of the water for health reasons, although I've never actually gone all the way out to the ocean to watch them.   When we do Tashlich in Jersey with my brother and sister-in-law's congregation, we modify the rules and take stones out of the brook, pray, and throw the stones back in.

Then, of course, we proceed throughout the year to do the same "sins" we just threw away.   So kosher or not, I'll stay in touch and find out where you guys are going for dinner on the 5th.  Jose, will you probably know where dinner's going to be a day in advance or are you just playing it by ear that day?

Here's an answer to a BK question: With ITunes, as someone said, you DO get a cover image that appears on the  ITunes menu when you play the song. You can even make it quite large on the screen.

But you get no inside cover info, liner notes, back cover, anything like that.

Here is my ask BK (or any DR) question:

Do you ever start a movie on DVD only to get interrupted so you stop it...and then days go by and you watch a little of it...then you stop for one reason or other...then in a few weeks/months you find that still haven't watched it all and, in fact, there is a stack of DVDs that you have started but never finished?

I currently have about 4 DVDs like that...just can't seem to get them finished!

Here's a thought....jump-start your weekend and get that dreaded/hated/spiteful kitchen floor mopped today, too!

:D

No way. I have a system of a room each day, and if I go off it, cleaning becomes even more of a chore than it already is because it eats up too much time all at once. One room a day - from five to thirty minutes depending on the size of the room - keeps it less like work and makes it just another part of my daily routine.

Which poses the question:  Just how messy can one person be that cleaning is required weekly?

;)

An easy trap to fall into for me because if I wait and not do it by the schedule I have, I start putting it off more and more and more, and I end up like I did when I was working which was I almost NEVER did more than a quick once over and was ashamed to ever have anyone drop by.

In my defense, however, I have a very old house which seems to breathe dust, and there is also a condo construction site right across the side street which causes much more dirt and dust to come filtering my way.

Then, I put in LITTLE MISS BROADWAY which looked much better than I was expecting. I only got 7 or 8 minutes into it before VERONICA MARS came on, so I'll finish it tomorrow, but so far, so good.

I would rather Fox have saved the money on the enclosed charm bracelets and produced some documentaries or something for these films instead of those trinkets.

VERONICA MARS was less a mystery series tonight (though, of course, more clues were spilled about the BIG season-long mystery she's been trying to solve), so I didn't like it as much as previous episodes. Still, she's a plucky kid that I would love to have had on my side when I was in high school.

There was finally a gay student shown on the show tonight.

I always check out transfers as soon as I get a DVD.  But I rarely start watching then stop - the only time I watch in spurts is in the bedroom before sleep.  I've been watching The Magic Sword of Bert I. Gordon in ten minute increments - the best way to see it.

Tried something different for dinner tonight.  I roasted a chicken.

I didn't do much that was all that special, really.  I stuffed a quartered lemon in the cavity, seasoned the bird inside and out, set it in my cast iron skillet on top of a bed of celery and onions, and let it roast for maybe fifty/fifty-five minutes at 450 degrees.  The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy.

And there's lots of leftovers for der B to enjoy.

Good thing we bought two birds at the same time; they were on sale at 70 cents per pound.

DR FJL, Jane et al...

I will be taking a final headcount for the food and walking tour in a week or so.

Right now, the plan is to start on the Lower East Side (LES) at The Donut Plant, and end a couple of hours on the Upper West Side (UWS), most likely at Artie's.

My preliminary plan calls for stops in six neighborhoods/areas.  I have one or two places in each area picked out for "sampling", and there will be about an hour in each area to explore and shop.

The day will start around 8:00 or 9:00, and we'll be sitting down to dinner around 6:30 or 7:00.

I'll be doing a few test runs of the route over the next couple of weeks.  And I'll be taking notes on where the public bathrooms are along the way.  :)

Yes, going walking from the LES to the UWS may seem like a lot of ground to cover - literally - but spread over the span of at least six hours, it should be very manageable.  And there should be time to freshen up a bit once we're back in midtown.  Just remember to wear your comfortable shoes and bring your umbrella.  -So, it won't rain.

*And as I hinted to DR Jane in an e-mail, there may even be a special guest or two along the way.

A simple and simply roasted chicken is always amazingly satisfying.  For your next venture, try putting a few strips of bacon across the breast, and maybe even rub some compound butter of your own making under the skin.  -That bacon gets damn tasty!

Good evening!  I've just delivered Charlotte safely to her home and I'm reporting in on TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, which is the first revival of a show I"ve enjoyed almost as much as the original production,  which I saw in March, 1972, I believe.  I found the cast very good, and I liked Rosario Dawson a lot more than some of the reviewers did.   My friend Don Stephenson was wonderful in "Thurio's Samba" and Oscar Isaac sounded a lot like Raul Julia but held better pitch in his singing.  Norm Lewis was great as Valentine, and John Cariani, whom I love as Beck on LAW AND ORDER, was quite a hoot.  I want to go back!

It was Charlotte's first Delacorte Theatre show, and the elements did not fail us:  during the title song, while Julia and Lucetta were changing into men's clothing, the rain began.  The show stopped for a mopping and drying of the stage floor.  The rains began again, and the band kept ad libbing Beatles songs.  The band was really great and the conductor, the beautiful Kimberly Grigsby, played keyboards and boogied sinuously.  She's quite lovely and looked radiant in her 70s skirt.  After about 30 minutes of the band ad libbing, the rain stopped.  The stage was once again mopped and dried, the audience was told the cast wouold be marking some of the dancing, and the show resumed after about a 45-60 minute delay.  The rest of the two acts flew by, and the audience had a great time.

Meanwhile, at work, I'm looking forward to this weekend more and more.  IT'S THE END OF THE SUMMER SEASON!!!!!

 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the learning experience of the past three months, but it can get intense after a certain point.  Lately, I've been getting just one day off per week.  Today, in the middle of my shift, I was asked if I "could" stay on for a couple of extra hours, up from six to eight (eight and a half if you count the manditory added lunch break) (I of course said "sure," and handed der Brucer the shopping list when he showed up to pick me up at the previously understood end of my shift; thus he picked out the birds, and did a good job of it, too).

I'm looking forward to a bit less pressure, to having maybe two days off during the week, possibly even back-to-back.

The really good news is that I've been told by more than a couple of co-workers how nice I am, and that they're glad I'm part of the team now.  When I told der B about this, he just chortled in a suspicious manner, like he knows something they don't.   ::)

Bacon acrost the breast...that's either "barding" or very kinky!

As for slipping something under the skin, James Peterson has a recipe where he stuffs the breast with spinach and ricotta!  (He also butterflies the bird in this version, something Julia Child and someone known as AB have also done.)

I am so looking forward to this tour! I cannot think of a better way to see New York, or better company to be touring with...and of course our guide-to-be is tops!

Aw, shucks!

I'm looking forward to meeting some more Hainsies and Kimlets too!

Hmm... Maybe I'll get t-shirts made up... Hmm...

"My friend went to New York City to go on this walking and eating tour of New York City, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt...  Because it's now too small for my friend."

Hmm... I guess I better make sure to tell the stage manager of A Woman of Will that I will not be available to play the show that night if needed.  -But since she opens just two days before that, I'm pretty sure a sub won't be needed that soon after opening.  But better safe than sorry.

Ohh... But if I end up playing another show that week...  Hmm...

Sounds like a lot of fun!  I do look like my avatar, so it shouldn't be hard to recognize me.

Or maybe we could all blow up copies of our avatars, mount them on tongue depressors, and use them as "masks"!

;D

Or we could go the Merrily We Roll Along route, and have sweatshirts on with our screennames on them.

And speaking of pictures, here's a shot from my birthday festivities last week.  Ladies and gentlemen, I present the Men of HHW!

And here's another pic of the group.

*And, no, I have not been working on my tan.  What you're seeing is the effect of five and a half frozen margaritas.  I get very red - face, hands, etc.  Some people call it the "Asian curse".  I usually look worse than I "feel".  -Although, once I got back up to street level and took a deep breath... Whoa!

I had a wonderful dinner this evening at a local Thai restaurant with a former co-worker.

We shared some pra-ram pork and chicken curry, as well as a plate of appetizers of fresh spring rolls made of vegetables and chicken.

I'm getting rather depressed with the news out of the Gulf Coast....it's far more devastating than I think they even imagined might be.

I'm wondering if The Netherlands might provide some experts to come in and make recommendations for future projects to keep the sea at bay.

I don't think the pumps and levees are going to be much good for the future, especially if stronger storms become the norm.

Perhaps they need to build some dikes!

DR Jose. we need some names here... you and DR Elmore are obvious, you might want to fill us in on who the others are since they don't look like their avatars.

It's very nearly almost my bedtime, but I'm so "full" from dinner (and we dined at about 7 a.m.) that I don't believe it's in my best interest to retire just yet.

I've been putting off using my new nasal inhaler...but perhaps tonight it's what I need....

Stand by, though....

Ron, INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE is probably one of my favorite books of all-time.  I never felt that the rest of the series lived up to that first book.

You're freakin' me out, Dad.  A couple years back you had a pic that vaguely reminded me of my (other) father's brother.  Now you look like my sister's brother.  What the hell is going on in this family?!?!?

You know, there are times I would just like to do mayhem.  I am still trying to figure out how to have downloads not saved in preview, which I cannot stand.  Anyway, I went to system preferences, and clicked on "monitor settings" thinking that might be something.  By so clicking it immediately changed the way my monitor looked, putting black bars on the sides, and screwing up the display completely.  Why would it do that?  How stupid can you get.  After doing a bit of screaming, I finally figured it out it had defaulted to a different pixel size, and I finally figured out how to get back to the way I had it.  But why would simply clicking on monitor settings cause it to default to some other setting?  I'm going to be calling Apple in the morning and reaming them out over this.

Sister's brother was funny enough for me. Assuming of course you don't have brothers DR Jed.

One sister, one mother, and two fathers, one of whom looks like two uncles.  Quite enough for me.

My problem is that I'll buy a DVD (or video) and then never watch it...at all!  Or I'll tape something off of TV and never watch it...ever!  Or worst of all is when I rent something (usually a new two-day release) and never watch it and then I have to turn it in.  I hate it when I do that.  But for cases like that, Netflix has been very good for me.  I can keep them for as long as I want...even when I misplace something that I've had since May and can't find it! ::P (which is the case for one movie that I have. :-\ )

Here's an answer to a BK question: With ITunes, as someone said, you DO get a cover image that appears on the  ITunes menu when you play the song. You can even make it quite large on the screen.

But you get no inside cover info, liner notes, back cover, anything like that.

I was wondering about that.  The other night, I downloaded from iTunes the whole album to the new "Bernstein's Peter Pan" with Linda Eder.  I quite enjoyed it, and made my own little booklet, but I really miss finding out who sings in the chorus or what liner notes there might be.  I don't think I'm going to do this (buying an entire album/CD) very often unless it's something that is otherwise unavailable.
