Title: FEELING RANDY
Post by: bk on September 08, 2005, 12:08:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're now feeling quite randy, randy is feeling quite you, and now it is time for you to post until the randy cows come home.

If you have trouble understanding what this means, have someone spell it out for you.

I was remiss in forgetting to mention the absolutely fantabulous performance of Chief Dan George in Harry and Tonto.  The scene with he and Carney remains one of the great classic scenes in cinema history.

Jose said (re our dinner on October 5th):

However, I'm also thinking that if people do want to freshen up before dinner, we could always end the tour in midtown, and then have a later dinner - start around 7:30 or 8:00 - when it would be easier to book a large table.

That is also a good idea. I guess we need more input. We also need to check and see if Joe Allen's still serves the $75 salad  ;)

Good morning, all!  I'm fighting a headache so I'm moving around cautiously this morning.  I need to do some Humanities Festival work today, but I cannot get the motiviation to take some Tylenol.  Soon, I promise.

I'm still waiting as well for the week's inteneraries for our Octoberfest:  I've heard from Ginny, MBarnum, and Danise so far.

TOD:  Favorite randy book:  CHARLOTTE'S WEB, which I gave my brother Randy some time around 1965, when he was 7 or so.

DR Jose - That would happen to work out great for those of us who are celebrating the New Year during the day (meaning me  :)  but maybe there are others???) if dinner on Oct. 5th didn't start until 7:30 or so.   That would even allow me an added bonus of having  Kosher New Year's Days and then reverting to my heathen non-kosher ways once the actual holy day is over.  Raising the question of whether you get inscribed in the good book if you know while you're praying for forgiveness of your sins that you're going to go back to sinning right aftre Rosh Hashanah is over, but that's an issue that we could post and riposte about forever.

I totally wussbergered (is that the word?) on my Dad's 85th birthday present yesterday.  After all the plans were moved two hours earlier and I no longer had time to shop for the gift certificate I wanted to buy, I asked my sister-in-law what they were getting for Dad, and it was this beautiful luggage set which they of course had in mind that if Dad refused it, Dad would just return it to them.  So we decided that i would just contribute my share of the cost of the luggage set and we'd put all of our names on the card.   Well, as he had promised, Dad wanted to give the gift back to all of us - but Mom stepped in and said she loved the luggage and if Dad didn't want it, she'd take it on behalf of both of them.  And BTW, it was a lovely party, from the lamb to the pirogies.

Good Morning!

Before heading to bed, I decided to catch up on a few more episodes of "Six Feet Under" courtesy of "On Demand".  I have about four more episodes to go, and I can already tell that I'm gonna be crying a lot.

 :'(

 ;)

*Thankfully, watching those episodes right before bedtime did not have any influence over my dreams last night.  Of course, right now, I can't even remember my dreams, if I dreamed last night.

Actually, my original plan was to have a later dinner, anyway.  So...

I was just waiting to see if anyone was planning on seeing a show that night.  Once I get the headcount and itineraries, then I will finalize the plans.  *And Joe Allen will only take reservations a week out as it is.

You're welcome.

I also realized that even though the thought of a 12-hour was "thorough", it would also make for a very long day - regardless of the inevitable mirth and merriment.  And even if we start as "late" at 10:00, that's still plenty of time to walk from the LES to the UWS - or at least to midtown.

*Of course, if we end up stopping in Little India, then DR MBarnum will, well... He'll be very happy.

Mornin', all....

Well, the office is already hoppin' and it's not even 11am! The busier it gets here, the more I look forward to the walking tour on the 5th.

Did anyone notice that I've ended a lot of words with apostrophes today? Very unseemly...

I found this on CNN.com today - it talks about the Zoos, Aquariums and Research Centers in the hurricane zone. Thankfully, only 2 otters were killed at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, though it sounds like most of the fish at the Aquarium of the Americas died due to the loss of power, ergo the loss of pumps to keep the water oxygenated. The bigger animals at the aquarium were able to hang on, though, which is great news. And at the Audubon Research Center, the only animal that is reported dead or missing is an American alligator. Here's the link:

BLOW-UP? All the sex and drugs, all revolving around a murder mystery (or was it) certainly kept my eyes on the screen trying to catch everything.

Funny. I haven't seen this since it first came out and got so much press in the 1960s. I suspect it would seem very tame now.

After reading a bunch of reviews of REUNION (which premieres tonight), I am feeling torn. Seems like ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and TV GUIDE gave it good reviews, but our local TV critic and the critic for USA TODAY were very critical of it.

Like most shows (and movies and plays) there is often a direct split of critical opinion, so I guess I'll make up my own mind and watch it tonight. But the pans do give one pause.

I also read this morning a review in VARIETY about a new film called ROMANCE & CIGARETTES. The title did nothing for me, but the cast was so impressive (James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, many other name actors including some Broadway names like Cady Huffman), I read the review.

It's a musical! No original score but rather rock standards from the 1960s and 1970s are used. It's directed by actor John Turturro.

With all the musical talk centering on RENT and THE PRODUCERS, this film had totally slipped under the radar for me. The review was mixed-to-positive. Looks like it's not going into wide release but rather playing specialized circuits.

According to Barbara Seamon's bio of Ms. Susann, it seems to have been rather one-sided on JS's part....and in fact when Ethel found out what was really going on, she was astonished and avoided the young "actress" at all costs.  8)

It was said during notes last night (not by the director) - that some actors are jumping all over other actor's lines and not waiting for them say all of their lines and if they would just wait a minute they would be said.

Hey - if I look at someone and he doesn't look like he's gonna finish that sentence, I'm going to start talking.

And it would help if I start your line for you....after waiting A LONG TIME....if you don't repeat what I just said before you finish the line.  Ya know.

And of course I love it when we finally get through it, and the actor you have stressed about and bailed out and backed up and finally have gotten through the scene says: "That was pretty good, I remembered more than I thought I would!"

I have never done an Ibsen comedy before.

I've only encountered a few "Randys" in my life (namewise, at least), one of whom was Randy Plemmons, who thought he was "all that" because he had the role of Peter in the senior play (High School) of "The Diary of Anne Frank" and because he wore his hair longer than any of the other boys (this was 1965).

Randy was "going places" to hear him tell it.  He was most unpleasant.

Well...I know where I am, but I don't have a clue where he is.  He's not "all that," so far as I know.

But...we were kids, so whatchagonnado, Ron?  Hold it against him the rest of his life???

I don't know.

I just visited Amazon.com....usually, Amazon lists boxed sets both as a set and as individual titles.

Nothing but this one title and the TV movie version popped up when I did a search.

One of my co-workers is having a bad day.

First, he was scheduled to have double-bypass surgery on Sept. 7.  Last week, he got a call saying the surgeon would be out of town this week and that he was being rescheduled for Sept. 14.

(Wouldn't you just love THAT happening to you???).

This week, he has been calling to confirm surgery and to get details as to where to go and what he needs to do, etc.

Yesterday, he learned they did not have him scheduled.

Today, all hell has broken loose.  He got a call at home last night telling him the surgery certainly IS scheduled and that he should call the surgeon's office today to have his questions answered.

The surgeon has employed a staff of morons.  My co-worker had to spell his last name THREE TIMES for whatever lump was on the other end of the phone.  Then SHE could not find him scheduled for anything!!!

She then began talking to someone in the office about "this guy on the phone who thinks he's gonna have heart surgery next week but he's not on the computer" and she did not cover the mouthpiece.  When she began talking to my co-worker he told her he'd call her back.  He slammed down the phone and cursed for five minutes or so.

He made another call and confirmed that he was supposed to get information from this office.

He called back, and to his suprise they had "found him" and he had been scheduled "all along" ("tee-hee," I guess).

He then got louder and louder and louder as he tried to get information about reporting time, where to enter, where to check in, when to check in and then finally exploded:

"Tell that son-of-a-bitch that any surgeon who would employ you to deal with patients who are riding on emotional rollercoasters is not to be trusted to cut open anything, much less a human heart!"

(There were a few "f" words thrown in there, but I think you all get the gist).

And I don't blame him.  Ineptitude has no place in a heart surgeon's office...especially when it comes to customer service.

I need help!

I am wondering if any of you electronically gifted people can help me.  One of my VCRs is having problems.  It doesn't really like most tapes. And sort of likes to eat them.  It doesn't ruin them. But i really want to fix this.  I've heard that if i open the top i can see the pinch roller.  And that it might have a lot of gooey stuff on it that i need to wipe off with a q-tip.

Well i have no idea what a pinch roller looks like. I took off the top, but still have no idea. i'm trying to find a pic online so at least i can know what to do.

Has anyone done this before?
Title: Re:FEELING RANDY
Post by: Matt H. on September 08, 2005, 09:18:58 AM
DR Jennifer, I applaud your efforts to fix it, but I've found that once a VCR starts eating tapes, it needs replacement. I certainly have some things on videotape that aren't on DVD and never will be (Tonys, interviews taped off TV), and I couldn't risk losing anything due to an ornery VCR.

I have taken the tops off of several VCRs before to extract chewed up tapes or to clean the video heads, but I've never fiddled with the pinch roller. It's the piece that swings onto the tape and presses down when you turn it on. Put in a tape with the top off and see the wheel that comes down on the top of the tape curface to push it down as the videohead reads it.

As I said, put in a tape with the top off and press play, and once the tape enters the chamber, you'll see the wheel that comes down to press the front (shiny part of the tape). That's the wheel you're looking for. You should use a bad tape, of course, in case it gets jammed. Then take the tape out and use a q-tip to clean it. Don't know if it will do the trick, but you can at least try that.

DR Jennifer:  There are tape-cleaning devices...just like VHS tapes, only you put a drop or two of solution on them, then insert them into the player.  The solution and the "tape" go through a cycle that applies the solution to the rollers and then cleans/dries them.

I always find these in local shops where VHS tapes and cassette tapes are sold.

You can also use Q-Tip swabs and isopropyl alcohol to do this yourself if you trust yourself to take the top off the player/recorder.

Sometimes, though, tape-chewing trends have to do with adjustments that need to be made...or replacemens.

I'm with Dr MattH....it's far better to buy a new player than risk losing the irreplaceable.

I have one of those tape cleaning tapes.  It helps.  I don't usually put tapes in this vcr (it is my second one). I just normally keep the same tape in it and it works okay.  But i wanted to try to fix it.

Btw, it doesn't really eat/destroy tapes. At worst it just gobbles a little bit.

DR Jen, you might want to run over to Radio Shack and buy a VCR head cleaner.  The only thing about that though is that there are wet cleaners and dry cleaners and I remember that one is very good and that the other could potentially damage the tape heads and I can't remember which did which.

Does anyone have any light to shed on the alleged affair between Jacqueline Susann and Ethel Merman?  I just heard about this rumor for the first time this morning.

DRDan(the Man), there have been references all over the place to Merman's being gay because she was such a butch broad, but they are false.  I knew Merman's press agent Phillip Bloom, who was 74 when he died in 1988, and he swore there was no truth to the rumors.  Louis Botto, editor of PLAYBILL swore the same.  I once had a great lunch with Louis and press agent Robert Ullman, who had me falling off my chair with laughter from their Merman stories.

Good Afternoon!

Yes, I know the Word of the Day is RIPOSTE, but my word of the day would have to be IDYLLIC.

What a gorgeous day it is here today in NYC.  After running my errands this morning, I headed over to the park to get in the line for tickets for Two Gentlemen of Verona.  Once I got up to the Delacorte, I followed the "trail" of people down the footpath... and I kept following them... and following... until I finally reached the end of the line.  It was a bit longer than I was hoping for/expected, but at least the weather was gorgeous, and my part of the line happened to coincide with some park benches so I got to sit down while I waited.

We were all serenaded by a flute player who kept playing themes from Chopin's waltzes and mazurkas.  He was a pretty good player, but I was hoping to hear some real flute repertoire.  Alas, that did not happen - he started playing selections from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons".

I read some of the book I've been trying to finish the past couple of weeks.  I chatted with the gentleman behind me.  We talked about the show, what I did for a living, what he did for a living, etc.  Alas, he had a wedding ring on.  Ah, well.  ;)

About ten minutes before 1:00, the line started to move.  At first it moved slowly - the ticket distribution didn't start until 1:00 on the dot anyway - but you could tell people were hoping that they would not run out of tickets before they got up to the box office.  Myself included.  -The volunteer who was watching our part of the line said we should be pretty safe.  However, if we were further back by the rock, then our chances would have been iffy.

I start getting closer and closer to the box office.  The line is moving quite fast by this time.  And there's still that tinge of anxiety in the air.  They stop me just as I'm about to step across the footpath.  "Could you hold here until the next group is finished."

OK.  Hmm...

They tell me to proceed, and then the announcement is made, "OK, folks, you guys are in the last group for today.  Congratulations!"

WHEW!!!!

So, I happily take my two tickets and leave.  -But not before checking in with the box office personnel to make sure I really do have a seat, and that the seat locations on the tickets are really seat locations - I keep thinking it's general admission.  So...

My guest for tonight will be DR Jason.  I will be meeting him at his place of employment after work, and we shall forage for dinner somewhere before heading to the Delacorte for tonight's performance.  And it looks like the weather should be fine and dandy tonight too.

I went ahead and walked back over to Broadway to grab the 1 back uptown to my apartment.  And, now, to fill the next hour or so, I shall do some laundry.  Ah, the simple joys of maidenhood.

;)

OH!

And since I was in the neighborhood, I went right into Artie's and asked about the schedule for Rosh Hoshanah.  They said they would most certainly be open.  Then the host offered me a copy of the catering menu...  "Oh, I was seeing if you would be open since I have some people coming into town that week."  -Oh, OK.

;)

So, I'll take a poll.  It might be Artie's.  It might be Joe Allen.  It might be La Cocina.  Or it could be all three!

-Nah.

DR Rodzinski asked me to express his deep regret that he has not been seen lately on this here board. Although it may soon be the most popular place on all internet, it would seem his work computer is not allowing him to log on to HHW.

He was worried about coming face to face with that bitch-slapping machine he hears so much about.

From what I've been purusing on the web today, I don't give much credence towards the actualality of an affair.  Like DRs JRand and Matt have said, it seems that because of some strange obsession on her part, Jacqueline Susann actively sought out Merman but her overtures were for naught--Ethel steered clear of her.  Susann, in turn, based the Helen Lawson character in VOTD on her and let everyone know about it.  What a strange and seedy little episode.  I must include it in my upcoming Broadway Babylon book.

Yes, indeed. Congratulations have already been offered to DR Jose for his possible LESTAT job, but now that it's a fact, I am SO very happy for him.

DR Jose, how long do these contracts run? Run of the play? 6 months? One year? Is there a trial period? Curious minds want to know.

Well, once I'm there, I'm there.  Unless I do something to royally mess this up - which I won't! - the position is mine for as long as I want for the run of the show.  People have been known to stay for a long time.  Heck, some of the folks in A Chorus Line played the whole run - with some breaks in there - but, still, the whole run.  And Phantom of the Opera has had the same concert masters and first celli since they opened too.  Job security.  -And, you get most of your days free!

Practically speaking, assuming the show is a total success and/or runs at least a year, it will be nice having something that stable for that amount of time.  I do like being on the road, but there is something to be said about having one major source of income for more than 12 weeks at a time.

I'm still working it all out in my head, but if I find myself very happy with the show, I would like to stay for at least a year.  Put some money away, pay off my debts, etc.  *Union scale is currently very nice, livable.  And live in NYC!

It is a union position, so there will be some vacation time built into the contract, but, I have to say, I hate subbing out unless I really have to - being sick, etc.  I just really like playing.  Although, who knows?  Maybe I'll end up like a lot of keyboard players in town who end doing multiple projects at once, and take some time off regulary.  -Remember a few months ago when I mentioned that the Broadway pit of Mamma Mia! currently has at least 5 people covering each keyboard part?

In the long run (of the show), if a tour ends up happening, I would love to go out with it.  Two words: per diem.  :)  But since I'm in one of the keyboard slots, there is also the possibility that I could be rolled up to one of the assistant conductor slots.

We shall just see where things go, lead, take me.

Right now, I'm just so very happy, and feeling very fortunate that this came my way, and that it fits in perfectly with my current obligations/contracts.  And it is, when it comes down to it, my dream job - to be playing in the pit of a Broadway show.  Not to conduct a Broadway show, just to be playing in it, being a part of the "noise".  I'm always happiest when I'm at the keyboard, and I can definitely see myself being very happy during Lestat.  And, hopefully, for a good year, if not longer.

And...well....you have to remember, DR DtM - that the person who introduced Jacqueline to Ethel was their mutual friend Benay Venuta.  Broadway is a samll world, and I hope you get that book.  It is VERY interesting with a LOT of stories about Susann's Broadway "career" arc in the late 30's and 40's.

I'm simply teeming with excitement about tonight's festivities, Jose. Hopefully good food, hopefully a good production of a show that I absolutely DO NOT KNOW (who knew?), and guaranteed good company. What more could a girl ask for? Thanks for the invite!

Last night we had "roommate night." I was roped into this evening of "fun" under the auspices that it was to be a night that the three of us could get together, cook, chat and maybe watch a movie - all "fun" things. When I got home, it was clear that that was not the plan. No - the fun "roommate night" turned into "let's clean the apartment" night. I was ambushed. The two girls "cleaned" the kitchen (their definition of clean greatly differs from that of my own [or my mother's]) and I was stuck with the bathroom. Actually, I was glad to have the bathroom because it was work I could do alone. And then I "got" to sort and carry all the garbage and recyclables down to the street. All FIVE BAGS worth. I will not commit myself to "roommate night" again. If they feel the apartment needs to be cleaned, then they need to just have the chutzpah to come out and say it. I don't mind doing it - I just don't like being hoodwinked into a cleaning event. Not exactly what I want to do after a long day of dealing with dodos.

Now the carrot-chewing coworker is discussing conspiracy theories with the very cute but outrageously stuck up (and dim) Admin Assistant to whom I alluded a couple of weeks back. Said Admin Assistant still looks at me as if I have no right to live.

I never has seen Artie's...or La Cocina...but I trust DRs Ben and Jose's judgements on dining establishments. I'm up for whatever!

Oh, back to Randy books for a bit...

Anything by Harold Robbins.  I still remember coming across a copy of "The Betsy" at a relative's house when I was nine or ten years old.  WOW!!!  That certainly was an eye opener.

And also anything by Gordon Merrick.  Another WOW!  I remember coming across a copy of "The Lord Won't Mind" at the library when I was in high school.  Boy, did that book answer a lot of questions I had about sexuality - well, at least homosexuality - in a way.  I went on to read the rest of the trilogy.  The frankness and graphicness still sort of shock me.  However, I did buy all three books a few years ago - I would really like to read them again now that I'm an adult, and there's less of a titillation factor involved.  -Well, I guess if Lestat has some long book scenes... ;)

DR Jennifer - First question:  You've kept the same tape in that VCR?  For how long?  -Even tapes need to "breathe" every now and then.

Second question:  How old is your VCR?  If it's more than five years old, you'd be better off buying a new one.  Alas, it's hard to find a cheap VCR nowadays since the advent of DVD players - cheap DVD players - but you may be able to score a deal.  I've seen some DVD/VCR combos under the $100 price point lately.

May I just ask what exactly did Randy do to deserve being felt?   (Sound of birds chirping as TCB mulls over any number of possible punchlines).

Good luck tonight, JR.

House update:  Well the thot plickens.  In going out and looking at every conceivable (and even a few inconceivable, LOL) houses in this neck and shoulder of the woods, we have met many an interesting person, yes, many an interesting person.  One of these was another developer whose little eyes lit up when I told him what was going on with our house.  He jotted down our name and number, but said he had to move some of his current "inventory" (I think he meant houses, though he did have an herbal aroma about him, if you catch my drift), so we didn't expect to hear from him.  Lo and behold, I get a call from his realtor today.  She wants to come right over and look through the house, which I let her do.  She asked me how much we wanted.  I mentioned a figure quite a bit higher than the I had with the first developer.  Her eyes got rather wide (with excitement, I think, hopefully not shock) and she said, "Is that for the house and the lot, or just the house?"  I said for the house and the lot.  She responded, "I'm sure you'll be hearing from Bob soon."

I think I need to go into sales or something.  ;)

My co-workers took me to lunch to celebrate my birthday (since I was off on that date last Friday).

They took me to one of my favorite restaurants -- "Il Pescatore" at Jack London Square.

I had a special -- orange roughie with bordelaise sauce.

For dessert we got chocolate mousse cake and key lime pie and shared it among the nine of us.

I'm extremely "uncomfortable" right now, but it was very, very, very (that's THREE "verys") good.

I haven't kept the same tape in the VCR. But I've found that if i keep that tape in, then i have no problems. So i just stopped trying to put other tapes in that machine.  It really dislikes new tapes.

I don't know how old it is. Maybe it is about 5 yrs old, although time goes fast.

If i didn't have another vcr then i would definitely get a new one. I guess i could look into a dvd/vcr combo or just get a dvd recorder.

I would, of course, have to list the FINEST randy movie ever made - The First Nudie Musical.

The Rewind site is live, although it may take certain servers a while to get it.  Go check it out and let me know what you think.  I'm very pleased with it.

I had no problem with the site loading and I think it looks great.  I enjoyed the excerpt and preordered my copy!

George is our first Rewind order!  So, I definitely know I have to order one copy.  Look forward to comments about the site - I think she did a great job on it.  And let us know what you think of the excerpt.

BB6

Well tonight is a big night. Janelle has to win HOH and if she doesn't she will be gone if she doesn't win the Veto.

On the live feed, Howie and Janelle were looking at the picture board and Howie was giving her a pep talk about how she is the best in the game and is playing for all of her team and how each of them will be watching her etc.  It was really pretty sweet.

Just an FYI - for whatever reasons, in the little excerpt on the site, all the italics have been rendered non-italics.  There aren't that many in those few pages, but there are some and they're not there.  The book, of course, has all that correctly.  I approved the cover today, and I should have test books in my hand in two or three weeks, and then they tell me that my order will get turned around much quicker than before, within four to six days.

In celebration of the new Tigard Pops season kicking off tonight, here is a little general MIDI file of my original "Autumn Lullaby", which will be performed as a wordless vocal (think Anuna or Clannad, and no, those are not rare communicable diseases ;) ).  Hopefully this will be a stress relieving 5 minute soundtrack for some of you, though its conversion to general MIDI leaves something to be desired (especially the percussion tracks).  This also serves as a cautionary tale as to what happens when a 10 year old listens to too much Paul Mauriat.   :o  Click here:

And speaking of randy movies (and books, too), the movie based on Rupert Holmes' book "Where the Truth Lies" has gotten an NC-17 rating!  Here are some excerpts from the article (http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/08/filmrating.ap/index.html):

"Where the Truth Lies" stars Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth and Alison Lohman. The film includes several explicit sex scenes, including one with Bacon, Firth and Rachel Blanchard....

[The director, Atom] Egoyan and Blanchard appeared before a 10-member panel in Los Angeles on Wednesday to state their case. The panel voted 6-4 to overturn the NC-17 rating -- one vote short of the two-thirds needed....

Egoyan said the rating is an "unwarranted response given the story it's telling and the way it needed to be told."

He said that while some scenes could be trimmed or replaced by footage shot from other angles, others, including the threesome, could not because they were shot with one camera and no alternative depictions exist.

"We couldn't trim any more without destroying the heart of the movie," Egoyan said.

I had no idea!  I just requested the book from my library. ;)

DR JMK - To clarify, yes, the fast day isn't until Yom Kippur.  But what i was talking about was being observant (to a point, since I will take a train or bus to see my family) on Rosh Hashanah, which normally includes a bit of fervent prayer and eating kosher during the actual high holy days themselves.  I'm assuming that wherever the HHW group eats on Oct. 5th won't be kosher, so that's why I'm glad it's probably not going to be until after sundown, when the actual holy day is over.

Got my Stages/Schmidt/Spirtas package today also.  Excellently packaged all around; can't wait to listen to them.  Maybe I'll put them in my CD player right now in case there's a media check soon here on HHW, and I've had the same five CD's in the player for weeks now anyway, so it's time for a little added excitement.

DR MATTH - I saw only a few minutes of the GARBO special and the silent screen test footage shot for Walter Wanger in 1949 is very interesting.  I think it was shot by William Daniels, but the slates are quick and I only saw a few of them.  She seems to be in good spirits....and I didn't see any color shots, but they may have shown them first.  Her makeup artist didn't do her any favors, but then again, these were never meant to be seen by the general public.  It was very very interesting, and I will be interested in your reaction to them.  A few years older, but very candid and relaxed.....

I will watch it at some point tomorrow. I really want to see how ANNA KARININA looks, my favorite of her films, even more so than CAMILLE or QUEEN CHRISTINA, but I probably will watch the documentary first and then ANNA K.

Thanks for the heads up!

I managed to watch the entire THE STING tonight before REUNION came on.

As bk supposed, I, too, think this transfer is not of very recent vintage. It's just not quite as sharp as I was expecting. Oh, it looks perfectly fine, but I noticed very early in one shot some terrible aliasing as the camera passed by some Venetian blinds. That almost never happens with movies any more, especially if your've got an HDTV set to recognize film based material using 3:2 pulldown (in an enhanced transfer to boot) and a good progressive scan DVD player. There were even a couple of places where the color looked pasty and on the verge of fading.

Now, most of it looked perfectly fine, and I'm thrilled to have any kind of enhanced transfer as opposed to what was available earlier on DVD, but I felt just the least little bit letdown.

I listened to the new repurposed DTS track, and while it did have much more bass, not a whole lot of music was sent to the rear speakers making the ix very front heavy. The El-train rumbling by a few times is about all I noticed coming from the rear speakers.

I have to say I did enjoy the first episode of REUNION. Yes, there is lots of teen angst among these six teenagers in the pilot episode, but since we only spend a few episodes while they're in their teens, I guess I can stand it. Every episode is a year in their lives so we'll move out of this uneasy period soon enough. As yet, we don't know which of the six is going to die. We did see one of the six in the present day sequences, so obviously that character will be with us throughout the entire season.

Good Evening!

It was my pleasure, DR Jason.  Always nice to have the company.  And I was glad that DR elmore could join us for dinner too.  *And I'm also glad we got to Artie's when we did.  When I asked to be seated "outside", the hostess got a little hesitant...  Then she "warned" me that her cousin would be our waitress and that it was her first day on the job.  As our meal progressed and more diners were seated in her section, I could tell she was getting a little frazzled and a couple of tables were lacking in attention.  -I come from a food service family, so I'm always aware of such things.  It just happens.  In any case...

We had a very nice dinner, and the conversation was indeed illuminating and scandalous at times.

Two Gentlemen of Verona was the perfect entertainment for a late summer/early fall night.  Frothy, zany, a little naughty, and bubbly.  A very well done production.

The casting of the ensemble was top notch.  The leads and supporting characters were great too.  I'm sure that Norm Lewis and Renee Elise Goldsberry would receive Tony nominations - if not the awards - were this show on Broadway for their portrayals of Valentine and Sylvia.  Their electricity on stage is palpable.  And it's always great hearing Norm Lewis sing period, and he really seemed in his element.  And Buster, who plays the dog, Crab, was amazing too!  ;)

We were seated off to audience right, but we didn't really miss any of the action - Thank You, Kathleen Marshall.  Well, I did miss seeing Kim Grigsby grooving up on the band platform, but she really lead a tight group of musicians.

I hung out afterwards to say HI to one of my fellow Signature Theatre veterans, Megan Lawrence.  She played Lucetta.  -And it also happened to be her birthday today too!  She's doing great, and is about to go into a show for the NYMF.  And I can't believe she's had three kids already!  WOW!  It was great catching up with her even for just a few minutes after the performance.

Favourite Randy Moive has to be BODY HEAT.  TO HAVE & TO HAVE NOT exudes randiness too.  It's like one big sexual innuendo.

And speaking of Randy movies.  While in Kentucky last week, I introduced a couple of my friends to the great Randy Scott/Budd Boetticher classic RIDE LONESOME.  They were both singularly impressed.  Though at one point when Pernell Roberts and James Coburn were in an intense conversation about the possibility of killing the hero Randolph Scott, one of them said, "This looks like it might have a little gay subtext.  At which point the dialogue went as follows:  "When are we going to do Brigade?  I don't want to come at him from the front.  Maybe if we got between him.  I just don't want to use a long gun on him."   Well....

More BB6

On the Canoe site they said the other day that April, Maggie and Ivette were hiding all the special toiletries (sp?) that are in the HOH bathroom in case Janelle won.  The funny part is Janelle got all kinds of bath stuff, lotions etc. pretty funny

The HOH room is re-stocked for each new HOH.

Those three are petty and mean beyond belief.  They hid quarters.  They hide toiletries.  They've hidden food from Janelle, too.

But oh, my, yes!  THEY are playing a clean, moral game.

They are the Petty Sisters who recite mantras of self-righteousness in order to hypnotize themselves into believing they're doing nothing wrong.

BB6:  Did anyvbody else absolutely LOVE Ivette's girlfriend, Maggie?

She hates Cappy, cannot understand what the hell happened to Ivette to be so loony about him; she thinks the "friendship" is a bad idea, strategically; and best of all, she LOVES Janelle...thinks she's smart and the game's top player.

She will either get all this through to Ivette or their relationship is over!

:D

BB6:  And isn't it simply wonderful of the game's Maggie to keep reminding her group that a vote against the friendship would be seen as an act of betrayal by the "alliance"?

I NEVER want to be in situation in which I had to rely on her to be my nurse!

Despite my best efforts to deny it, I feel like I'm coming down with a "summer cold."

My first clue was a phlegmatic cough this afternoon.

Now my throat is raspy.  It's a bit beyond my normal "allergy-related" condition.  And I'm tired, too, when I should be enervated.

I am truly looking forward to watching "The Sting" and the new release of "To Kill A Mockingbird."

I'm planning on tackling those tomorrow.
