Title: LEISURE SUIT

Well, you've read the notes, you've read the notes at your leisure in your leisure suit, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're putting on their cow leisure suits right now, and then they'll be toddling on home.

DVD...I think I'll explore a little more of The Fly and its extras.  I also came across a documentary called Try To Remember:  The Fantastiks which is about The Fantastiks done around the time the show finally closed.

CD...I need to listen to After The Fair, produced by our very own BK.  And I need to have another listen of a Nickel Creek album our very own elmore sent me.

On the bed-stand...a book of long short stories by Fredric Brown called THE PICKLED PUNKS.

Good morning, all!  I overslept and got out of bed at 6 am, but I'm feeling very unawake after two cups of coffee and a nice bath.

DRJason, I, too, love "Night Letter" but are you aware it's "S.W.A.K." (Sealed With a Kiss)" or am I missing a joke?  It's very possible on my end; few circuits are working.  I think tonight my friend Matthew and I will see JUNEBUG featuring Miss Celia Weston. godmother to my godfather.  The rest of the weekend will be tied up with Toyland and Chicago Humanities Festival.

TOD:
CD:  Susan Egan "Coffee House," Bernstein "Peter Pan," STAGES/TA
DVD:  L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE (I think that's the title)

I'm listening to AccuRadio right now. It's playing Tango Traguiqe from SLM.

We have no plans for this evening (I'm doing the laundry after work but after that, nothing). I'm seeing Lennon tomorrow evening, just in time since it's closing next Saturday.

We saw Beauty and the Beast last night. It was OK. I must say the show is TOO LONG. It's 2 and a half hours!!! There are some nice moments but after almost 12 years (it opened in April of 1994) it's beginning to show it's age. Most of the songs that were added for the stage version could be dropped or trimmed. We enjoyed ourselves and Anthony got to see which roles he could do if he was cast. He was thinking Le Fou before he saw the show but after last night we both agree he would probably have more fun and do more with Cogsworth. The guy playing Le Fou did a great job with the physical comedy but vocally he was weak. He's the understudy and it seems to me he didn't have a lot of rehearsal. Steve Blanchard, who played The Beast was excellent. I saw him in Johnny Guitar many, many months ago. I'm glad he's still working. I was also pleasantly surprised at the behavior of the many children in the audience. Based on the sounds before the lights went down I thought it might be a bit raucous but they were very attentive with very few disruptions.

Ah, well. I must get to work.

Later, gaters.

P.S. François, glad you liked the Karen Morrow clip. I'm a big fan. A dear friend of mine met her many years ago when they were both camp counselors in Superior, Wisconsin. I have never met her but my friend, Tom, always said wonderful things about Miss Morrow. From what I've heard, it's all true.

TOD:
dvd:
INSERTS - (netflix) Does anyone know the difference between the version which was released theatrically and the International release which is represented on the dvd?
I saw this theatrically when it first came out and was bored to tears; now, it's interesting to see Bob Hoskins, thin, talking about building a freeway through L.A. (ring any bells?), opening drive throughs and named "Big Mac."  Dvd transfer is excellent.
And that previously mentioned L-O-N-G film, BEN-HUR, which is amazing to behold.  Those teeny-boppers on less popular sites are complaining constantly about this release, BUT, what I see is top notch; very cinematic, quite film-like and clear as a bell (one can actually see individual hairs on centurians' legs!)  So far, I'm up to the battle at sea sequence.  I haven't dipped into the silent version yet, but I know there is one significant difference in the galley scenes.

BK mentioned those great TV movies of the 1970's in his notes.  I think they called it the Tuesday Movie of the Week for quite a while.  IIRC, some of my favorite TV movies were part of that series, like The Last Child (with Van Heflin), Crowhaven Farm (with Hope Lange) and original Night Stalker (which I believe is being remade as a new series).  I got spoiled and rarely went to the movie theaters in those days, because what I saw in the theaters didn't necessarily live up to what the networks were creating (I won't say churning out, because the quality level was too high) week after week.

Stages/Together Again - not all the wya through it, but enjoying it a great deal
Gershon Veroba (thanks again, JMK, for recommending it)
Time-Life Greatest Hits of 1978 (alternating Earth Wind & Fire's "September" with Gershon Veroba's - great stretching music)
Epiphany - Chaka Khan
All the Way - Celine Dion

DtM: I haven't heard any chatter about TWO GENTLEMEN transferring. I didn't read any of the reviews, but I heard they weren't all that great. I loved the show, though, and really wish they had at least recorded it because Norm Lewis truly sounded fantastic. So did Renée Elise Goldsberry, who played Sylvia. If we had a recording of HER singing "Night Letter," I might have known that it was "Did you remember you have to say S.W.A.K." Jonelle Allen sounds like she's saying "S.W.A.T" on the cast recording. I thought it was just some kind of kinky reference. Now, thanks to DR Elmore, I know what the frell she was really saying!

Re. Nickel Creek: I went to undergrad school with Chris Thile - the lead singer/mandolin player for Nickel Creek. He's a sweet guy and an AMAZING musician. He had a Grammy at age 12 and taught himself violin in 6 months when we were in school together. His dad, Scott, is/was the instrument technician at my alma mater. Very nice folks - a good family.

I believe they're scheduled to play the new Nokia Theatre on 44th & B'way on Oct. 7. I'd love to see him again...and they're a great group.

COMPUTER ACCESSORY ALERT!

Quote
Mice Carrying Plague Vanish From Lab
Thursday, September 15, 2005

NEWARK, N.J. — Three mice infected with the bacteria responsible for bubonic plague  apparently disappeared from a laboratory about two weeks ago, and authorities launched a search though health experts said there was scant public risk.

The mice were unaccounted-for at the Public Health Research Institute, which is on the campus of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and conducts bioterrorism research for the federal government.

Federal official said the mice may never be accounted for. Among other things, the rodents may have been stolen, eaten by other lab animals or just misplaced in a paperwork error.

Well, if the officials who think infected mice might be misplaced by paperwork say not to worry, what's to worry?

The Stranger Within -- Barbara Eden
Five Desperate Women -- Julie Sommers, Denise Nicholas, Joan Hackett
The Girl Most Likely To -- Stockard Channing
Satan's School For Girls -- Shelly Winters

"Mansion" is one of Valentine's songs but there was a substitute song called "Howl".  When we did the show at school, I remember that the director had the actor playing Valentine try out "Howl" but he didn't like it so we stuck with "Mansion".  Just curious...

I feel ill...queasy tummy...dang I don't want to be sick for the weekend

Of course I haven't taken my thyroid supplement since Monday so that may be the problem

When I went to the doctor Thursday last week for my sinus thing he took blood because it was time to check my thyroid levels ( I had a tumor that required the removal one of my thyroid lobes about 15 years ago, several months after that the other lobe pretty much ceased working so I have been on a thryoid supplement ever since)

Dr called me on Monday and said my test levels were showing as way too high which could cause cardiac complications and that I should cease and desist taking the medication forthwith and go have my blood tested again Wednesday morning, which I did. (he wanted to be sure the results were accurate and not a lab foul up or the result of theover the counter decongestants I had taken)

I called yesterday for the results and the office was closed with a message saying they would be opened Friday morning.

I called this morning and the message now said that they were closed and the office would be opened Saturday morning!

I don't think it would make any sense to call the covering physician becasue without the test results and my records he can't advise me as to whether to start taking the medication again or change my dosage

BLECH!!!

DR Jose: Everything survived, though the icing had melted a touch and I'm not sure about the banana pudding. It should be OK, right?

I slept quite well, though I did wake up around 4:15 and took Berneice off. Not because I smelled anything burning - I just took her off for some reason. Honestly, I didn't give the movie any further thought once I got home, so I wasn't creeped out at all. I'm now doing a little research on the "real" Emily Rose - a german girl named Anneliese Michel.

Does anyone remember the very first Movie of the Week?

"Seven in Darkness", with Milton Berle (and Red Buttons IIRC), among others (Lesley Ann Warren maybe?), as blind survivors of a plane crash.  Loved that one--still remember them trying to get across the broken bridge.  :)

Another vintage 1969-70 ABC series (imported from the UK) that I'd love to revisit is "Journey to the Unknown."  I still remember the roller coaster opening and can hum the theme to this day.  I especially remember the episode with Vera Miles (I think--maybe I don't remember, LOL) trapped in the library after closing with the ghost of Jack the Ripper, or something like that.  OK, I guess I definitely don't remember.   :P

Hmmm....

Martha Stewart's nephew (I think) is singing on her show right now...  It's her her mom's birthday ("Big Martha")...  And he just sang "Once Upon A Time"...  I'm not exactly sure that's an appropriate song for a 91st birthday...  Hmm...

*And Martha said that he gave up going to a callback for a production of Oklahoma in order to be on the show today - or whenever they tape...  Hmm...  Well, if he sang the way he just did, well.. I wouldn't have called him back.

He's not the only one finally accepting responsibility. I read in CNN.com yesterday that the governor of Louisiana is also taking the blame. I think they're all politically screwed at this point - no amount of backtracking or admission of guilt is going to save their butts. Who cares who's to blame now - they need to focus on how to fix it now that the damage is done and pave the way for their replacements.

One of the things I have to get squared away here at work before being gone the first week of October is a book display.  My theme is National Book Award winners, for which I have been using the National Book Foundation website at www.nationalbook.org (http://www.nationalbook.org).

Here's something I just found that may be of interest to DR's who will be in New York on Saturday, Oct. 22:

The Book That Changed My Life Marathon

The headlining event of the National Book Foundation’s National Read-Aloud Day, this 12-hour marathon, presented in collaboration with LIVE from The New York Public Library, and sponsored by Random House, will feature prominent writers, actors, politicians, scientists, musicians, athletes, businesspeople, reporters, directors, artists, judges and dancers talking about a work of literature that greatly affected them.  The speakers will be followed by Broadway and Hollywood actors who will read excerpts from the selected works.

Tickets sold in four 2.5-hour segments.

Tickets: $10 per 3-hour segment; Members/NYPL Donors $6; Students/Seniors $8; Just Kidding Club first segment free
Venue: Peter Jay Sharp Theatre

Friday greetings!

TOD - On the way to work I finished listening to the CD version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  I thought the ending was very sad, but a great set-up for the 7th and final book.  After the book ends, Jim Dale gives a little speech on the importance of reading aloud to children's development of vocabulary and reading skills and the usefulness of audiobooks for long car trips.
This gives me an idea.

Tarlie, der Brucer's daughter (my out-of-stepdaughter) thinks it would be wonderful to get her eldest son, Alex, the Harry Potter books, in order to get him more interested in reading.  Der Brucer and I think this is not the best idea, since Alex is eight, and the first book is written more with a ten- or eleven-year-old in mind.

However, if we were to get him the Jim Dale recordings, he could read along with the recording.  It could make things easier for him.

Question for the Big Brother watchers:

It seems like most of us dislike the Friendship and like Janelle.  Well I have a question.

I think most people feel like if ivette has the chance she should take Janelle to the Final Two, over her friendship with Maggie. However if it was Janelle in that position (and her friend, kaysar or howie was still in the house) would we feel the same way?

I'm just wondering if our dislike for maggie and ivette is clouding our judgment.  Cause if janelle had to choose between ivette (someone she disliked and we all disliked) and howie/kaysar, I think that we would probably think that she should keep her word to her alliance.

But in the case of ivette, it just seems like she is being coerced into choosing maggie.  Maybe this is the problem. If it were ivette's own free choice then we would feel better about it?

Btw, who thinks ivette will throw the final HOH comp. I do!

Good Afternoon!

I went ahead and tracked down a few more reviews of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose".  Although not a rave, the Washington Post gave it a nice review, and the opening section has a nice ;) to it.

Quote
Freed Spirits
'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' Possesses a First-Rate Cast

By Stephen Hunter
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 9, 2005; C01

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is full of ghostly presences who flit across the screen trailing gossamer filaments of lost possibility, dashed hopes and broken dreams. It's a haunted project, then, full of ache and loss and regret.

I'm not talking about the movie, or the real Anneliese Michel, the young German woman upon whose death the movie is based. I'm talking about the cast, which is far more interesting than the movie. What a collection of superb performers who, for one reason or another, never quite made it, at least to the heights their talent would seem to warrant. The star is the incandescent Laura Linney, who just a few years ago seemed poised on a major career after the breakthrough of "You Can Count on Me." Now she's in an exorcism movie.

The co-star is Campbell Scott. The son of George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst, he's another who almost got there -- he was the big news in "Dying Young" with Julia Roberts way back in '91, then segued into directing (he co-directed the great "Big Night" with Stanley Tucci). But I have never heard of his last 16 movies. And now he's in an exorcism movie.

Then there's Mary Beth Hurt, so poignant and promising in "Chilly Scenes in Winter" and a few other films in the late '80s. Since then, almost nothing . . . . until the exorcism movie.

Finally, Henry Czerny, a Canadian actor, was brilliant in "The Boys of St. Vincent"; he came to Hollywood and dominated several films, chiefly "Clear and Present Danger," where his vitality and intellect far outshone nominal star Harrison Ford's dullness. He was going to go all the way. He didn't. He's in an exorcism movie. Worse, he's a cameo in an exorcism movie! ("And Henry Czerny as . . . the Psychiatrist.")

But in the case of ivette, it just seems like she is being coerced into choosing maggie.  Maybe this is the problem. If it were ivette's own free choice then we would feel better about it?

Btw, who thinks ivette will throw the final HOH comp. I do!

I think we have seen ample proof that Janelle and Kaysar and Howie are NOT the same "kinds" of people as Maggie and Ivette.  They are not petty and underhanded.  They did not assume everyone other than them was evil.  They did not eviscerate everyone else behind their backs.  Maggie and Ivette and April and Eric all did that.  So did Jennifer (and she continues to do it with that little shi**y chipmunk grin on her butt-ugly face).

Ivette has made it known from day 1 that she is there for the money and only for the money.  She wants the money.  She needs the money.  It is because of this that we actually believe she should dump Maggie, who will beat her out for the money.  Also, Maggie has implied she has preferences as to whom she would want to be in the final 2 with...and one of them wasn't April.  Why I don't know.  She would have been safe with April.  Possibly, she'd have been safer with April than with Ivette or Janelle, but I think she was the odds-on favorite to beat any one of the three based on the content of the sequester house.

It's a much different scenario with Janelle and Ivette in the final 2.

First, Janelle is smart enough to realize that when you're in the final 2, the last person you want beside you is a "friend".  I don't think it's clouded judgment to think Ivette ought to realize this.  If, in fact, Ivette only cared about preventing Janelle from winning, she should make every effort to win Phase 3 and evict Janelle.  Maggie would win the half-million dollars if that happens.

I think Janelle would have been as safe picking Howie as she would be picking Ivette (i.e., I think her chances would be even).  With four women now in the house -- Jennifer, Rachel, Beau and April, and possibly with Maggie joining them -- a woman against a man would probably fare better than a woman against a woman...so Kaysar or Howie would be safe for Janelle...no "moral" dilemma, in other words.  I know they all professed to hate Janelle, but I think gender would have been Janelle's ally, and most of the women have conceded that Janelle surprised them, played smart and outplayed them.  I think they would respect her for that.

I think Ivette OUGHT to throw the last phase so that she doesn't have to make the choice she NEEDS to make.  She can't go with Maggie because Maggie will beat her. And she doesn't want to pick Janelle over Maggie because of her "morals", "dignity" and "friendship" issues (which, to the rest of us, are worthless words based upon her actions, thus far).

Janelle most assuredly won't pick Maggie to go to the final two.  Just won't happen.  IMO

Posting from work, Jose! Seems to be working okay today.

I hate it when a reviewer uses his own ignorance to attempt to negate someone's career. Just because he's never heard of ROGER DODGER, THE SECRET LIVES OF DENTISTS, HI-LIFE, etc. does not mean Campbell Scott fell off the planet. What he really means is he and Mary Beth Hurt haven't been in any blockbuster films. This doesn't make them "ghosts of what could have been" or whatever.
Hurt was great in CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER, he got that right though.

Vixter was lucky enough to have parents who cared enough to read with her.  Alex, now in the 2nd grade, doesn't have that advantage.  His father is too busy doing all the cooking after long days in the construction biz, and Mommy doesn't see why she should bother because she's so "busy" doing everything else (including screaming at everyone).  Since der B and I can't be there all the time, getting every other advantage for the lads is a serious concern around here.

The 32-year-old Tokyo woman was arrested on Wednesday for incitement to murder, the Daily Yomiuri newspaper said on Friday.

The woman contacted a private detective through a Web site last November and paid him $9,000 in cash to murder her love rival, the paper said.

The 40-year-old detective accepted the money and suggested he could carry out the job by chasing the victim on a motorcycle and spraying her with a biological agent in a tunnel.

Police also arrested the private detective and found the alleged target safe and well, the paper said

That botched murder-for-hire story reminded me of a wonderful scene in "Gigi":

Aunt Alicia (on the phone): "Liane D'Exelmans has committed suicide...again."

Madame Alvarez: "No!  How did she do it?"

Aunt Alicia: "Oh!  The usual...insufficient poison."

Someone is selling a sealed copy of New Guy in Town on eBay.  Makes you wonder, doesn't it?  It's obviously a promo I sent out - which infuriates me.  I've been very select about who gets promos, and if I find out who is selling theirs (I only send out less than ten to reviewers) let me tell you how fast I will pull them from the list.  It's cheap right now, so maybe someone who hasn't ordered theirs yet can go win it and tell me who the seller is.

Red Bittons - No
Lesley Ann Warren -  Yes
Vera Miles - Yes

Vixter was lucky enough to have parents who cared enough to read with her.  Alex, now in the 2nd grade, doesn't have that advantage.  His father is too busy doing all the cooking after long days in the construction biz, and Mommy doesn't see why she should bother because she's so "busy" doing everything else (including screaming at everyone).  Since der B and I can't be there all the time, getting every other advantage for the lads is a serious concern around here.

DR SWW - The only part of Jim Dale's audiobook testimonial that I found off-putting was when he suggested using them when parents don't have time to actually sit down and read to the children.

DR MattH, OMG I loved the finale of Veronica Mars.  I raced over to my sister's house to pick up the videotape she made for me.  Crazy. Surprising. Action-packed.  I love it. I would encourage anyone to pick up the Season 1 dvd or watch Season 2.  This is my one of my most favorite shows!

Until the person's head popped up in that video (showing us the murderer's identity), I was absolutely convinced the person I thought was guilty truly was. I was astounded at the person's identity. All the clues fit, but why I didn't see it before the revelation, I don't know.

I do know that the finale was breathelessly exciting, and I was on the edge of my seat.

Now, as for who I think was at the door, I think I know that, too, so let's see if I'm right.

I went off my Friday Media List and put in the 1991 DVD issue of BEN-HUR today.

This morning, I read Terry Lawson's (film critic for the Detriot Free Press) review of the new BEN-HUR DVD package, and he mentioned how much improved the sound is in this issue. He said nothing about any picture improvements.

So, I'm eager for someone who has both copies of BEN-HUR and a surround sound set-up to give us the lowdown on both picture and sound from each BEN-HUR DVD set.

Yes, I think it's moved out to sea and is now considered just a tropical storm.

This thunderstorm was a typical summer variety, and I don't think is connected directly to Ophelia.

Back to the 1991 BEN-HUR a second.

Watching it now for the first time on this particular TV, I can see that while there are no artifacts or print damage, the image isn't exactly razor sharp. It's clear; it's fine, but compared to recent DVDs, I have seen sharper images.

To my ears, the sound seems full and expansive. I can't imagine what they might have done to improve the sound field unless they just cranked up the volume or perhaps added more bass. My subwoofer was rumbling plenty with the appraoch of the legions.

However, I haven't gotten to the slave galley sequence yet, so maybe that's not "up to snuff," as they say. I seem to remember watching this some eyars ago that it sounded great to my ears, but that's coming up on the DVD.

Veronica Mars Season One Finale spoiler.

DR MattH, who did you think was the killer?  And who do you think is at the door?

For some reason someone I know was convinced the killer was Leann (V's mom).  As for who is at the door, I can only think of 3 people: logan, duncan or wallace.  My guess would be wallace.  But I did read a posting from someone who apparently saw Season 2 episode one. And he/she said something like "who is at the door is not necessarily who veronica would want to see". Whatever that means.

I guess it could be Wievel too.

Did you see the preview for season two? Something about logan.

Well, I should not be surprised the jokes seem stale - the play was written 113 years ago! The critic reminds me of a high-school classmate that that was complaining the Shakespeare was a hack writer. When challenged by the prof to defend his view point, he proudly declaimed -"He uses trite phrases like "Something is rotten in Denmark".

THE broadcasting watchdog has found two episodes of reality program Big Brother breached the industry code by screening sexual antics, nudity and foul language.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority ordered Channel 10 to clean up its act.

The probe found the two late-night shows breached the code by showing material too offensive for its MA classified show.

MA is the strongest rating for free-to-air programs, and must be suitable for 15-year-olds.

The breaches came from an episode in which Michael gave a female housemate a massage with his penis exposed, and another episode in which the male housemates sang about fetishes and degrading sexual acts.

All I've gotten is profanity up the ying-yang from the females in the house (they and Eric, that is).  Howie did his share, too.

Quote
If the consent to the marriage contract was obtained either by fraud or force, then there are grounds for an annulment. Fraud is not telling the truth in order to induce the other party to enter into the marriage. Whether the failure to tell the truth will be grounds for annulment depends on the facts of the case. Force is threat of or threat of the use of physical violence to make a person get married. If the person who has been threatened or deceived about the marriage contract continues to live with the spouse after discovering the fraud or the deception or after being forced into the marriage, it is possible this ground will not apply.

This seems to be the  "fraud" issue Renee is raising

Grounds for annulment vary slightly from state to state. Generally, an annulment requires that at least one of the following reasons exists:

Misrepresentation or fraud -- for example, a spouse lied about the capacity to have children, falsely stated that she had reached the age of consent, or failed to say that she was still married to someone else.

Concealment -- for example, concealing an addiction to alcohol or drugs, conviction of a felony, children from a prior relationship, a sexually transmitted disease, or impotency.

Refusal or inability to consummate the marriage -- that is, refusal or inability of a spouse to have sexual intercourse with the other spouse.

Misunderstanding -- for example, one person wanted children and the other did not.

Well, the Tacoma News Tribune theatre critic can't stand the play Charley's Aunt, citing a "script that should have been destroyed at least 50 years ago" in which the "jokes are stale and the plot weak," but admits that our "stellar cast...elicited an almost endless stream of guffaws."  And apparently I'm "lovable as Jack."  I'll take it.

....and I am, apparently, also in the cast.

Miss Tammy Minoff and I had a lovely lunch featuring the cuisine of Mexico.  She was wearing a tiny little skirt, and as we went into the restaurant a man ogled her and said "nice skirt."  The subtext was "nice skirt and can I go out with you tonight."

No, I believe the subtext was "nice skirt, can you take it off."

"Big Brother 6" Spoilage:

We now have the worst finish since Jun and Allison,  the two most-hated women in their season, reached the final 2.

Oddly enough, though, the sequester house vote is now in the hands of the Outcasts, who outman the fiendsheep clones 4-3 with Janelle, Rachel, Howie and James.

Whether James will vote for Ivette or April will vote for Maggie remains to be seen.

It's a shi**y ending to a mostly shi**y season...once again.  And Ivette proves once and for all that she doesn't have a clue how to play the game.

Her mother and girlfriend must be furious.

From the other day,  I've won a few prizes over the years.  Nothing big.

A watch in drawing.  A doll at a ring toss at a local fair.  Some scratch off tickets with the lottery but nothing more then twenty dollars.  Many "tickets".

And the "other" websites.  You mean there ARE other places on the net?  ;)

I have very little time for the net like I used to and  I used to post on BWW almost every day.  Not so much now.   Mostly when I have a PM but it is very rare to see me on the board.

I like the Google Earth I told you all about the other night.  BK, do you have the exact address of the theater?  I want to see what's around there.

On line banking, ebay, amazon, deepdvddiscount, are a few others.  I use Expedia to book my trips.  Those are about all that come to mind.

Good Evening!

Well, I ended up getting a free ticket to see The Wild Women of Planet Wongo after all!

The show was lots of fun, and I knew a few people in the show as well as in the pit.  They were having some technical issues, but that's understandable considering the schedule they run on during the NYMF.  Each show gets a whopping 30 minutes to load in - and just about only six hours of tech time.  So... In any case...

The show is based on the B-movie, "Wild Women of Wongo".  Very campy.  I like the show, although I think the 4:30pm time slot worked against the performance - there was a general sense of "after work" and "nap time" in the audience - admittedly, myself included.  But the cast really was giving it their all.  And for a show put together on a shoe-string, the costuming was very well done, and the small pit band was top-notch.

And for more info on the show, CLICK HERE (http://www.nymf.org/index.php?module=ShowManager&func=display&sid=4)
*The pics on the site are from an earlier production of the show.

I hope this isn't a poll (oh wait, polls are allowed on this site :) ), but  hearing Times Like This again got me thinking - has anyone already done a cabaret act or a CD with all dog-related songs?  Besides Times Like This, there's Hound Dog, How Much Is That Doggie in the Window, Snoopy's songs from the Charlie Brown shows, Who Let the Dogs Out, Puppy Love, something from 101 Dalmations, and there must be others.  Anyone know if this is an idea that's already been done?

The Royal Guardsmen's Snoopy Songs. Harry Nilsson's "Puppy Song" (covered by David Cassidy), "Aint I'm a Dog", "Walking My Cat Named Dog" and I think there was a group Bow Wow Wow.
"Walkin' the Dog", "Dogface Soldier"," Dog Eat Dog" and "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow Wow"

To answer your question.  I don't know of one!!

Jackie Wilson's "Doggin' Around". and then there's Annette's "Jo Jo The Dogfaced Boy"

I had meant to make a comment on the song "Howl" from TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA; written for the London production, it's on the London cast recording and it's published in the vocal score with the original "Mansion" in the Appendix.  I asked John Guare about this number when I called him in 2002 to congratulate him on the CD release.  He said that the creative team had been worried about the phrase "nothing like a sublet" having no reference outside of Manhattan, hence "Howl."

OIC (internet lingo for Oscar Is Cute.)  Thanks for the history on that, DR Elmore.  Now I need to track down the London recording.

Half of these "new" musicals in the NYMF are ancient.  The one with Debbie Gravitte, which people on certain chat boards are "raving" about has been around for about seven years or more.  And the NYMF is doing a reading of a "new" musical called Liberty Smith.  I saw a reading of THAT one back in '98 or '99 at the York.  And they act like these shows are hot off the press.  NOT.

While watching the Roman sequence in BEN-HUR tonight with the vivid reds and golds and silvers and seeing the wrinkles in Jack Hawkins' forehead so clearly, I had told myself I did NOT need to buy the new BEN-HUR, that the one I have is good enough looking for the infrequent times it will get played (really do much prefer THE TEN COMMANDMENTS or PLANET OF THE APES if I want a Charlton Heston fix).

I then I read bk and DR td's enthusiasm for the new one. I read DR Michael Shayne's report that this new release was most likely taken from a 70 mm elemnt rather than a reduced 35 mm element as the 2001 version was.

So, I will be ordering it tonight. And I WILL be able to hand this old one over to a friend who's just starting to build his DVD collection.

I'll also get the 1925 BEN-HUR which I wanted anyway.

I think this is the first time I've noticed exactly what colors they were and the style of print. I guess it took a bigger screen to finally notice them, but I was amazed by them. I watched it through the scenes after the preview cards have been distributed. I'll finish it tomorrow.

DR SWW - The only part of Jim Dale's audiobook testimonial that I found off-putting was when he suggested using them when parents don't have time to actually sit down and read to the children.
"Don't have time" is code for "can't be bothered."

You have good reason to be off-put.  So do der B and I.

I also watched the two hour premiere of THRESHOLD tonight. Nice pulpy sci-fi series, I think. It doesn't have the richness of LOST (yet), and the characters don't seem wildly interesting as individuals, but perhaps they'll get more interesting as the series unfolds.

There were certainly several JUMP OUT OF YOUR SEAT moments, and I was a willing target for them.

One silly thing, though. One character who has been transformed by the aliens took four shots to the chest and was unfazed by them. FIne, but why are all the main characters armed and fire at the transformed humans when it's been shown they aren't affected by bullets? It seems dopey to me.

It seemed that last year's NYMF shows were more by newer writers, but I wonder of that's a function of NYMF being brand new last year, so less able to attract writers with track records last year than they are this year.

We're going to see THE MISTRESS CYCLE tomorrow, and that's by Jenny Giering and Beth Blatt, who have already amassed a major reputation to the point where they're working with Marsha Norman on another musical (PRINCESS CARABOO) that's going to be at NAMT (the National Alliance) next month.

And THE BIG TIME is by Douglas Carter Beane and Doug Cohen, the version of BONNIE AND CLYDE at NYMF has music by Dana Rowe, who's composed for the West End already.  It seems the NYMF graduated very quickly from emerging writers to writers that are closer to being established writers.

Thanks all for the responses re dog-related songs.  I should have known it was too simple an idea not to have been done already.  I guess I'll consider putting my idea for a CANINE CABARET on my list of things that were just not meant to be.   That is, unless I can come up with another angle to make it original.

I guess if you were Miss White, (Snow for the men, short or tall -- I wonder if she ever married S Woody!) you would not be moping about mopping the kitchen floor and you'd be whistling about it! That's how things went a century or more ago... I've heard!

BEN-HUR has now been ordered.

It isn't over. . .the race isn't over, yet,  Judah. . .look for them in the valley of the lepers. . .

Well, I finished up the viewing of BEN-HUR.  Just wait until the storm sequence near the end for truly awesome bass. . .

Noticed so many new things this time around - and actually it hasn't been that long since I watched this film.  i.e.,  Drusus and Messala - can we say that the subtext becomes textual? ? ?

I'll more than likely watch the silent version tomorrow.  After reading bk's notes of course.

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

Hmmm...  I've been researching some stuff on/via/through the internet for the past hour or so.  I found a bunch of answers to questions I've had about various and sundried things.  And I also found "answers" to questions I never thought I would ever ask - if that makes sense.

It's all music and music-biz related, so don't go there DR elmore.  ;)

*Although, I did come across one interesting tidbit which you might be interested in.  I'll call you.

DR FJL - When I was an accompanist at Catholic University, I played for a lot of musical theatre recitals - sometimes three in one day!  All those receptions!  All that cake!  ;)

In any case...  One of the young women I played for, "plotted" her musical around a dog, her pet.  From the moment she got the dog, to the moment the dog died - and everything in between.  She did have a bunch of actual "dog songs", but she was also able to use some standards here and there to refer to her relationship with the dog.  One of the better "concepts" for a recital I've played for.

And there's a workshop of something called "Dog Songs" coming up in NYC in the next few weeks.  I coached a singer this afternoon who was auditioning for it.

As for the shows in the NYMF - Not all the works have to be new.  There are some productions getting their first "major" production mounted during the festival, but a bunch of the works have been around for a while - maybe just not in New York (LA, Chicago, etc.).

There are also two distinct categories of mainstage shows.  There is the "Next Link" series which focuses on newer shows, and the NYMF provides them with the opportunity to get the show on it's feet for the first (or second) time.  There is also an "Invited" series which is comprised of shows that the NYMF staff has seen around the country.  And as BK pointed out earlier, some of these shows have been around for years already.  Heck, there's even a production of Six Women On the Verge of Braindeath (or Expiring Minds Want to Know) as part of this year's festival - and that show has been around for at least 15 years if not more by this time.

If the "ravers" on the chat boards can't read up on the show they're seeing, well... they don't read up on anything.  Ah, well..
Title: Re:LEISURE SUIT

Oh... and there's also a show floating around called Pets which doesn't concentrate exclusively on dogs, but they're still in there.

...I also think that NYMF is trying to pick some properties that can indeed move onto bigger venues (like last years's Altar Boyz and The Great American Trailer Park Musical).  Well, that they HOPE will move on to other venues.  Nothing like a good track record to attract talent.  And money.

RE: "Threshold" - Eh.  There were some good moments, but a lot of those moments came between some patches of forced dialog, and bad attempts at humor.  I kept thinking that the writers were trying to catch some of that very sly and dry humor that's a trademark of the "CSI" franchises.  There were just a lot of bad jokes.  And with the somewhat top-notch cast (Carla Gugino, Brent Spiner, Charles Dutton, etc.), I was expecting the writers to step up.

What a wonderful night.  The moon is close to full and SO bright on the lake. I sat on the dock tonight for several hours with my nephews, a niece in law (What on earth do you call a nephew's wife?) and my brother-in-law. We had the bedt time. The moon was like a spotlight and our moon shadows were so dark and distinct it was amazing.

Of course we sand Moondance and Moon Shadow ....  forgot about Moon River, but then we are on a lake

Anyway it was grand

George, Didn't you know Randy Yackle?  He'll be at the wedding tomorrow. I haven't seen him in a while, and am looking forward to hearing him play.

There will be lots of music tomorrow. A harpist for the wedding, a vocal jazz group, Randy accompanying a singer, and I think an instrumental jazz group for the reception.   Should be interesting.  My nephew met his wife to be in the pit for the musical Cowgirls.  So it's a musical sort of wedding.

I really must go to sleep now.
