Title: THIRTY-THREE OPENING SENTENCES
Post by: bk on September 17, 2005, 12:11:07 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're ready to do your trivia guesses, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - I faxed them all thirty-three unused opening senteces.  They're perusing them now.

So, BK, 34 seems to be the magic number.  Congrats on finally getting your sentence.  The few times that I've tried to write anything (other than posting or chatting on-line ;)) have been Agony (an Into the Woods reference).  I can obsess over one sentence for literally an hour or more!  I could never be a "writer"...at least, not by choice.

I don't think I can really contribute to the Topic of the Day.  There aren't many specific bubblegum songs that I like...or know that they're "bubblegum."  Okay, I do like "Sugar, Sugar" and I guess I would consider "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" by Wham! as bubblegum and I actually really like those songs.  Unfortunately with me, once I like a song, I ususally like it for forever. :D

As for driving songs, I don't care what I listen to, just as long as I like it...so if I like something, I don't care where I hear it! ;D

And with that, I must take my leave from HHW...and where I take it, I'll never tell. ;)

So, instead of "goodnight," I shall say:  until the next time!

"1-2-3 Red Light" is a good one.
Also "Simon Says."
"Rice is Nice."

I don't drive too much, but when I do, I put on one of my Mixes of Ultimate Variety and see what happens.

Hello from a weary Romanian traveler ::)

We are in Sibiu--a once beautiful city that, thankfully, is under massive restoration.  Problem is, we are in the center of it all: jackhammers, tractors, wire fences, and lots of dirt mounds.  The hotel we wanted to stay at was filled with NATO personnel here for somekind of meeting...probably to locate missles in some Romanian cow pasture!  Instead, we're staying in a communist-era hotel.  Oh joy :P

Off to see a Jewish synagogue--I need proof that they still exist in Romania.  Vlad's castle was a bit of a let-down but all the souvenir huts made it INTERESTING ;D

I watched the new hour-long Ben-Hur documentary.  The usual snooze-fest - a couple of archival interview, otherwise just boring new Hollywood types spouting off at the mouth.

Good morning, all!  I may be E&T for today and tomorrow.  I've got things to finish up here before the trip to Ohio.  This morning I have to work on a wonderful song "Weekend Cruise" (Will you love me Monday morning as you did on Friday night?) and finish up "Fun to Be Fooled" for the copyist, perhaps do some Toyland edits, and finish up Miss Prince's chart.

More to follow.

Pop songs I listen to a lot right now:  September by Earth Wind & Fire is at the top of the list right now but I just started listening to it again since Labor Day; That's the Way It Is, sung by Celine Dion; Through the Fire, sung by Chaka Khan

Pop songs that I listened to over and over when I was younger:  One Bad Apple, sung by the Osmonds (then called the Osmond Brothers); Turn the Beat Around, sung by Vicki Sue Robinson;  Him, sung by Rupert Holmes; Gloria, sung by Laura Branigan; Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted and Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque, sung by The Partridge Family; You Should Hear How She Talks About You, sung by Melissa Manchester.

But actually, one of my all-time favorite bubble-gum songs was indeed a song about a philanderer, called Nobody, sung by a one-hit, one-named lady named Sylvia.

Topic of the Day...

One man's "bubble gum" is another man's "Muzak"... or something like that.

I used to listen to "pop radio" a lot when "pop" music still existed - depending upon how you define "pop".  So... In no particular order...

"Hey, Mickey" - Tony Basil
"Cherish" - Madonna
"We Got The Beat" - The Go-Gos
"9 to 5"- Dolly Parton
"(9 to 5) Morning Train" - Sheena Easton
"You Should Hear How She Talks About You" - Melissa Manchester (Thank You, DR FJL, for the assist on this one.)
"Forever Your Girl" - Paula Abdul
"1, 2, 3" - Gloria Estafan
"Walk Like an Egyptian" - The Bangles
"Our House" - Madness (Talking Heads)
"Jesse's Girl" - Rick Springfield
"Never Gonna Give You Up" - Rick Astley
"Safety Dance" - Men Without Hats
"Soldier of Love" - Donny Osmond - I remember when this song first came out, the video received a lot of play in the gay bars in DC. ;)
"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" - Wham!

Etc., etc., etc...

I hope everyone had a better nights sleep then I did.  I was tired when I signed off last night but I guess I was so wired from the day that once I laid down I couldn't sleep a wink.

I guess I should have gotten back up and posted some more.

Lovely pictures, DearReaderLaura.  I'm looking forward to see some more.

Good morning!

Not an especially cool morning here, but I did go for my walk and am glad I did.

When I first woke up this morning, I was thinking it was Sunday and that I needed to get up momentarily to get ready to go grocery shopping. After dozing off, I woke up suddenly to realize that it was Saturday and not SUnday, so I feel like I've gained a day. And I did this without doing anything with the International Dateline!

CHARLIE BROWN?

Since I only watched the first half of BEN-HUR yesterday, when the new set comes next week, I will probably start with the second half.

The score for this movie is one of the greats! But what a terrible deicision in 1959 to decide the Best Score Oscar between this, THE NUN'S STORY, and THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. (ON THE BEACH and PILLOW TALK were also nominated.) Can you believe ANATOMY OF A MURDER wasn't?

Back healing vibes to MS!!

For the second week in a row, I think I know the trivia answer right off the bat.  I'm scaring myself.  ;)

TOD:  Well longtimers here know I'm a pushover for anything Brasilian.  Great driving music!  In fact, I got a great new shipment of Brasilian imports yesterday and have been listening nonstop to Quarteto em Cy, the Tamba Trio, and Joao Donato, among others.  This morning I listened to a fabulous new Michel Legrand recording, an hommage to the fabulous Brasilian pianist that I've mentioned here before, Luiz Eca, quite possibly the most incredibly technically proficient jazz pianist of all time (including Tatum, I might add).  Now I'm listening to the Japanese carioca (yes, Brasil is huge in Japan, don't ask me why) Lisa Ono, on her new album with the kids and grandkids of Jobim.  So I guess I need to do this all in a car to make it relevant.   ;D

WELL....THE SHOW MUST GO ON.

Dateline: Greencastle, Indiana

Last night at 8:26 p.m. three transformers belonging to the Cinergy Corporation failed.  The eastern section of Greencastle was plunged into darkness.  This included the Hazel Day Longden Theatre, home of the Putnam County Playhouse.

Inside actors were performing MY THREE ANGELS.  Onstage were Bob Perry and Marian Zennie as Alfred and Marie Louise.  The emergency lights came on and shined onto the thrust stage, so without missing a beat, they continued the scene.

A few minutes later, Jack Randall Earles as Jules made his entrance (with a stolen chicken) and a flashlight.  Moments later, Beth Girton as Emilie entered, also carrying a flashlight.  The cast continued to the end of the scene.

At that point Director Ernie Ford took the stage to inform the audience what had happened and asked if they wanted the show to continue.  The audience applauded and insisted that "the show must go on."  And so it did.

Assistant director Sandi Rossok lit the candles that were on the set as props, and also lit four kerosene lamps that were around the stage (the show is set in 1910 French Guiana).

And so the next scene began in the warm glow of candles, hurricane lamps, and a couple of flashlights.

Act One ended.  Ford took the stage again and announced that Cinergy was working on the problem, but did not know how long it would take.  He said that if members of the audience wanted to leave, they would be escorted to their cars.  No one wanted to leave.  Ford said since there were no lights in the bathrooms, there would be no intermission.  He called "Lights up!" and the show continued.

About eight minutes into the second act, the lights returned and the show was completed.  As the lights began to shine again, Earles repeated a line that he had said earlier in the show: "Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow."  The audience applauded, the show concluded and received great applause.

                                                                -30-

AND I HOPE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.  THE GUY WHO IS TERRIBLE WAS STILL TERRIBLE.....DECIDED TO AD LIB SOME FUNNY COMMENTS AND MADE HIMSELF SPOKESMAN FOR THE CAST DURING THE CURTAIN CALL.

ONLY ONE MORE PERFORMANCE.  TOMORROW'S HEADLINES WILL BE ALL ABOUT THE MURDER!!!  IT WILL BE AN 'ORIENT EXPRESS' TYPE OF DEMISE, WITH NINE STAB WOUNDS IN ONE BODY.  MAYBE TEN, I OWE HIM AN EXTRA ONE FOR THE HELL I'VE BEEN THROUGH.

That is all.

In the Who Knew Department - two actors recently discussed on these here boards, Duilio del Prete and Luciana Paluzzi appear in a film together!  Along with another former Bond girl, Ursula Andress. . .
I could be nice and say what movie it is, but, if I don't there'll be more, more, more (an Andrea True reference) POSTINGS!

I'll have to think about the list of songs.   A few that seemed to be included on many tapes are "We Could Be Happy" by the Cryan Shames, "Heidy-Ho Princess" by Neon Philharmonic and "Turn Down Day" by Cyrcle.
Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" and the Three Degrees' "When Will I See You Again" got added.
True bubblegum songs would have to include "love Grows (where my Rosemary Goes)", "Build Me Up, Buttercup" "Love Can make You Happy".  "I Say A Little Prayer "( Aretha's version) and "Heat Wave" (Martha and the Vandellas not Irving Berlin) are great driving tunes.

Can't say I was ever a fan of bubble-gum music.

When I'm cruising in the car, I love all kinds of music.  I play show tunes, standards, old rock & rock (love Doo-wop), cowboy songs, classical.  When I used to travel across country a great deal, I acquired a taste for country-western because it was sometimes the only thing you could pick up on the radio.  I still go through bouts of country-western in the car.

BK, THE MORNING AFTER is just a god-awful movie.  First of all, Jane Fonda is the fittest, healthiest alcoholic I've ever seen in a movie...no bloat, nothing.  Secondly, her character in the end just ends up as a damsel in distress who needs to be rescued from the villain.  Poor protagonist.

I think this latter problem stems from something she told me in a meeting I had with her once early in my career (I've met her twice...once in this meeting and once in a social setting...and I found her to be a lovely, delightful person both times).  She told me in this meeting that she never wanted to play anyone who kills another person in a film.  Well...guess that leaves out great roles like Lady MacBeth and Medea and explains why her character becomes a helpless victim in Morning After.  But the whole proceeding is a very clumsy effort by all.

Good Afternoon!

Just finished watching a wonderful program on the station out of CUNY.  It was a taping of one of the American Theatre Wing's seminars.  On the panel today were Ted Chapin as the moderator, with actors extraordinaire Richard Easton, Marian Seldes, Frances Sternhagen and Robert Prosky.  A most enjoyable and insightful 90 minutes.  Wonderful stories and recollections, as well as some great advice and "warnings" for those getting into the biz.

And now...

It's worth it when you've gone 7 weeks of rehearsal of a musical comedy and FINALLY get an audience to see if the show actually "works".

IT WORKS!!!!

"I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" previewed last night in front of an audience that was totally worth the wait.  I believe the run is going to be a lot of fun.

Oh - and you ask "Did anyone even laugh in rehearsal??" We.... I'm still laughing as is the Stage Manager, I don't believe the director laughed much at all... it's almost like he didn't "get" the material, and that, dear readers, is a DAMN GOOD POSSIBLITY! That's all I'm going to say.

Oh, I forgot about the Car Music part of the Topic of the Day...

I'm all over the place.  However, I do like playing shows since they help to keep my brain going while following the plot from song to song.  -Although I do remember one time listening to Les Miserables and I had to pull over to the side of road during the Finale since I had started to cry and had trouble seeing the road.  :'(

Otherwise, pop/dance stuff is always nice and peppy.  Basia spent a lot of time in my car's cassette player.  Oh, and lots of Ella Fitzgerald too.

And the villain, Pogue.  Once you understand that there are only three characters of any import in the film, it's really not too difficult to figure it out, is it?  The film is just inept, actually.  And it's always hilarious to me when a film is shot on location and the characters eat at restaurants, fast food joints, walk on streets, and yet those locations are never given the context of where they are located - what street they're on, what's around them - it's just closeups of the actors sitting somewhere.  It might as well be in a studio.

First of all, you spent seven weeks rehearsing ILYYPNC?  Seven?!?!?

;)

Secondly, it really is a show that only truly comes to life once it's front of an audience.  All those laughs, all those tears (the whole Rose monologue always got to me - and when we had busses from the nursing homes... Wow!).  -And I always loved the very audible "Oh, I've been there" reactions from the men in the audience during "Waiting" when the Macy's section started.  ;)

And as for laughing in rehearsal... There was many a time when we could not get past the entrance(!) of "A Stud and A Babe".  My actors were just so funny, too funny at times.  But it sure was a lot of fun!

Here's to a fun-filled run!

I FELT like 7 - however, I believe with tech week it was a total of 6.  Still, it was about 4 times a week or so.  This cast is brilliant, I wish they had better direction, but they've run with the drek they were given and IT WORKS!!!!  However... I'm STILL having trouble with "I Can Live With That" - the E-major section, but it's so much fun anyway!

I never thought about Bubblegum Music that much.  I don't think it was even supposed to be thought about.

As for music in the car, I'm a non-driver.  Der Brucer, who does all our driving, generally has control of the car radio, and prefers to keep the news on as much as he can.  Otherwise, it's showtunes, usually with me in charge of the CD player.  And that includes when the grandlads are in the back seat, only instead of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels we're more limited to, say, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Michael, you've apparently missed some notes.  I discussed this several times.  No, two weeks prior to the set-in-stone shipping date he blithely announced that his printers had told him they couldn't handle the job, and he was now having to search for new printers.  Buried in that notice was the fact that the book is still not finished yet, so what the printers have to do with anything is a moot point until the book is actually finished.  What he does, and what he's been doing for the last two years, is buying himself three months at a time - every time he's supposed to ship, something else goes wrong and then it's three months later.  He "says" that it will now probably be December.  Well, that's exactly what he did last year.  It won't be December, it won't be March, it will be the 12th... of Never.  I think the book has become an albatross - his Waterloo.

Most of us interested in Judy knew he was bastard long before he died. In his defense, however, he did have his hands full with Judy.

Sid Luft is of course a supporting player (with a cool Bacharachian jazz waltz duet with Lee Mikesell called "Reclaim Your Star") in Starcrossed, my Judy and Frances musical.  I was warned by two people who knew Sid quite well that it might be best if Sid not know of the show ;).  His death makes that quite a bit easier, LOL.

For BK.  "Indian Lake" The Cowsills.
Without The Cowsills there would not have been a Partridge Family.

Bubblegum was a child of the late sixties - to cash on the pre teen market with Sing-a-long ditties. 1968/9 were the true years of "Bubble Gum" music.

As mentioned by JRand - "Buddah" was the label most associated with Bubblegum. As the bubblegum bubble burst, the label expanded to other styles - Melanie and Gladys Knight.

Buddah shut down in 1976 which helps explain why it is so difficult to obtain Melanie's "Candles In The Rain" album on CD.  Anyone out there?

Hi Everyone, I'm sad to say that my summer of leisure has at last come to an end.  I spent all day today at a training for GMHC and will do the same tomorrow.  And my internship with the Jewish Board begins on Monday.

I'm excited about starting the internship as it represents the final phase in obtaining my masters degree- but I'm not looking forward to another year of being crazy and pulled in multiple directions- classes, internship and part-time job.  Hopefully it won't be as bad as last year when I was doing the same juggling act but with a full-time job.  I got to spend time with Rodzinski about once a month. :(

I awoke this morning to the shocking, and completely unbelievable news, that a very old and dear friend of mine was arrested and charged with second degree murder on Thursday in Eastern Washington.  He was a thirty-year career police officer for the City of Tacoma, a loving friend, and an extremely talented musician.

Regardless of the circumstances, it appears there is little doubt that he did indeed shoot and kill one of his buddies following a fishing trip together. This is the second time this year that someone who I have known for many years, has been arrested and charged with murder.  In both cases, there seems to be little doubt of their guilt. And in both cases, it appears very likely that alcohol may have been a determining factor in the events.

I was craving an In and Out Burger so I went and got it.  There were four teens standing by the front door when I arrived.  They, of course, stepped right in front of me as I went to go in, so they could go in ahead of me.  And they blocked me perfectly from getting to the window before them, even though they were sauntering at a snail's pace.  There was no one at the counter when they got there.  They then proceeded to order SEPERATELY - heaven forbid they should have all ordered at once.  And each of them took an eternity ordering.  I mean, they only have three items at In and Out Burger, it's not brain surgery.  All in all, I stood in back of these incredibly stupid people for ten minutes.  Whilst doing so, I had to look at their butt cracks, their tattoos and listen to their completely inane chatter.

I do remember those notes I just thought that he was going to get around to a more confirmed date by this time.

Well, the polyurethane fumes are driving all the neighbors in the building a bit mad, so to escape them, I hied me to a movie at 84th and Broadway:  CRY WOLF, which from the advertising looks like a Friday the 13th horror clone, but which is actually a rather nifty little mystery.  I had quite a good time except for the two highschool bimbos in front of me who had the collective IQ of a corpse.

I finally had to move because they were so pathetic:  never shut up, and the one moron kept turning on her cellphone whenever the light from the screen went down so your attention went from the screen to the bright square of light in her hands.   Jesus Christ!

While we're on the subject of young people behaving obnoxiously, let me add to the mix the early-20-something young man at the NYMF box office.   I gave my name and handed him the email confirmation for our tickets, he couldn't find the name on the list, asked when I had bought the tickets.  I told him I couldn't remember the exact date but the date was on the email.  He literally yelled at me "When did you buy the tickets?" prompting me to have to say firmly it was a few weeks ago, look at the date on the email.  He finally looked at the email and said "Oh, August 29."  And he did at that point look more carefully for our name on the list and lo and behold found it.

Since the show was sold out, would we have been totally out of luck had we not brought our email confirmation, I wonder.  In any event, a warning to bring your email confirmation if you're going to NYMF shows.

Here's the short version...

Columbus Cirlce - Lunch at Whole Foods.  It was PACKED this afternoon!
The Village - There was some street fair going on, as well as some chef's event - which I just missed by a couple of minutes, they had just started taking down the tables.
SoHo
Little Italy - It was the San Gennaro Festival.  LOTS O' PEOPLE!  And LOTS O' FOOD!!!  Can you say "zeppoli"?
Chinatown
Lower East Side
East Village
...and then back across to the Village.

Whew!

*Basically, i ended up doing a dry run of the walking and eating tour.  And I think I have a good idea of the general plan.  Now I just need to check to see where the public bathrooms are along the way. ;)

I spent the evening watching movies on the DVR and from DVDs.

First up was INSPIRATION, a 1931 Greta Garbo vehicle in which she plays a Parisienne fashion model. Robert Montgomery was her co-star. I found the movie tedious to sit through. I guess people during the depression would pay their nickel or ten cents just to sit in theaters and see glamorous folks like Garbo parade around in Adrian creations, but this has to rank as one of her least inspired movies.

After the Garbo dud finished, I watched MR. BELVEDERE GOES TO COLLEGE with, of course, Clifton Webb and Shirley Temple and Tom Drake. Can't hold a candle to the first MR. BELVEDERE picture SITTING PRETTY (where is THAT on a Fox Studio Classic DVD?), but it was OK on its own. I saw it many years ago, but its slight little plot had faded in my mind.

Shirley Temple as the young widowed mother of a child! Must have been a shock to folks back in 1949!

When that was over, I put in TIME BANDITS.

This was a Criterion DVD, but it was an early issue and was letterboxed but not enhanced for widescreen TVs (a subsequent DVD is not anamorphic, I believe). Looks like it was probably ported right over from the laserdisc master, but as the film never did look pristine in the theater, the lack of razor sharpness didn't bother me too much.

Like most of Terry Gilliam's movies, there's a lot of imagination amid the sloppy filmmaking. I guess that's part of his persona as a director. His movies always seem to have great ideas but not always perfect execution.

Still, it was nice to revisit it after many years of not seeing it.

I must also head off to bed early, as I am singing tomorrow morning at my father's memorial service at the church where they are dedicating a new sound system, sponsored by Mum and I in dad's name.  I'll be singing "How Great Thou Art," "Mansion on the Hilltop" and Amanda McBroom's "Errol Flynn."  The first two were Dad's favorite hymns, the last song, I sang for Dad during a concert I gave when he had just been diagnosed as cancer-free. . .that was two years before his passing.
So, to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and to be able to sing properly at 10:30am, I must get a little bit more rest than usual. . .
I'll be back after I drop in on a couple of other sites. . .

Restless in the City of Studio.  I'm thinking about being a VERY bad boy.  I've already had bacon and eggs and potatoes this morning, and an In and Out Burger this afternoon, as well as a little chocolate chip ice cream.  But I am having a major little craving for some fries and ranch dressing from Jerry's.  We'll see if I have any will power or not.

I may be done with DVD watching - I did Psycho II and III earlier and have been listening to the Major Dundee commentary track. which has some interesting tidbits but which grows tiresome after ten minutes, despite our very own Mr. Nick Redman being included.  He's actually the one level-headed guy, just asking interesting questions and never pontificating.  The others pontificate ad nauseum, and I have to believe, knowing what little of Mr. Peckinpah that I know, that he would have loathed these types of commentaries about his work.

Hmmm...just finished watching CAPE CANAVERAL MONSTERS...my favorite line:

Space man to space women as they stand over a victim:

"She's unconcious now, but earthlings are strange."

that reloading AOL wiped out 3 years worth of saved e-mails! Aack!

Don't dispair (maybe). The saved EMails are still most likely safely stored on your hard-drive; you just need one of us to talk you through the procedure of finding the file and moving it to your new AOL directory and renmaing it appropriately.

Presuming you have Windows XP, look for a path like:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize

There should be a spearate AOL folder for each installation (a re-install is usually given an "a" appendange (AOL 8.0a). In the "organize": folders there should be a file with no extention that has your screen name as its name - go to your current "organize" folder, rename your screen name file to something like "oldsuff" and then copy the file from the old organize folder to the new one.

Then take two aspirins and call me in the morning.

I've finally caught up (I hadn't logged in since I posted post # 10!).  I had some errands to do and I stopped in at work this afternoon for about an hour.  Before I went to work, I had lunch at a place just outside of Olympia called the Ranch House Barbecue.  It's to die from (a "Jerry Herman at the Hollywood Bowl" reference).  They have some damned good burgers (I'm not a fan of bbq pulled pork or ribs :P).  They also have these hand-cut fries with garlic bits that are the best!  If you're ever in the area, GO! :D For dessert, I had a "Brownie Delight," simply a warm brownie with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.  Simple, but very good.

After that, I went to my sister's house and our parents came over to help repaint parts of her house.  She had to have some siding replaced because some panels were buckling (the house is only a year and a half old!) but the panel replacers didn't paint it.  After that, I cooked for the family (burgers...what else?) but I didn't eat any more.  I was still stuffed from the bbq bacon cheeseburger from the Ranch House Barbecue!  Then, I came home and copied a CD for DR Ben...and have now caught up.

But I must leave again so that I may watch last night's episode of "Battlestar Galactica."  I really like this show!  (I don't care what anyone says! ;))

People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.  New notes up in a mo.  I did go out and buy some French fries, which I must now eat.

A very long silence.... We have had guests so I've been making tea and chatting.  Where did everyone go?
