Well, you've read the notes, you read them like the wind, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home like the wind.

I'll have to say "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane" is my favourite. It is the only Crawford film I remember having seen!
Add that to the fact that I didn't have Judy Garland Cd until recently (Thank you François) and DRs will start thinking I'm playing for the other team
No wonder I have no time for "Beaches" and "Steel Magnolias".

Hey, if anyone happens to go to the Broadway Flea Market (i'm assuming it is today and not yesterday).  Can you please tell us all about it.  It is one of my most favorite things in NYC and I'm sad not to be there!

Btw, tonight is the season premiere of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.  I cannot wait to see what mischief Cherry creates this season.

Btw2, does anybody know who will narrate this year and will there be another mystery?

DR MattH, if you go to upn.com and click on Veronica Mars there are some videos to watch.  One is a preview for this coming season.

Good morning!

The sun is hiding behind totally overcast skies today, but it's muggy and humid and that means no walk for me. I'll hop on the treadmill and walk there for awhile.

I finally read the TV GUIDE article about VERONICA MARS in their "Returning Favorites" issue, and BOY am I glad I skipped over this when the issue first arrived. The identity of the murderer was in the FIRST sentence of the write-up.

spoiler

It also revealed that the person at Veronica's door is either Logan or Duncan, so there goes my theory that it would be the gang leader.

I think the season long mystery on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES is going to be concerned with new Wisteria Lane resident Alfre Woodard and her son. That TV GUIDE issue I mentioned above doesn't mention any other on-going mysteries.

Favorite Joan Crawfords:

FLAMINGO ROAD
MILDRED PIERCE
A WOMAN'S FACE (truly one of her best performances and often neglected)
GOODBYE, MY FANCY
THE WOMEN

and in the campy phase of her career:

TORCH SONG
FEMALE ON THE BEACH
QUEEN BEE

And then the Joan Crawford shockers which (other than BABY JANE) are so bad and laughable, you can't tear your eyes away from the screen:

BERSERK!
STRAIT-JACKET

I also love the clip in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT where she dances like a truck driver.

Aong the Joan Cawford movies I've never seen and want to:

DANCING LADY
THE GORGEOUS HUSSY
THE BRIDE WORE RED
REUNION IN FRANCE

Yes, Joan's ungainly dance to "Got a Feelin' for You" is from THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929.

I just watched it the other day on a videotape someone made for me from the laserdisc. Hokey, mostly terrible musical numbers and comedy skits, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

;D

In addition to those mentioned, I also loved Crawford's performance in the pilot of NIGHT GALLERY.

I assume BK is giving us clues galore for the Trvia Contest, but ibdb and imdb just don't seem to be cooperating with my various hunches.

Off to an engagement party for the daughter of someone in the office.

Unless Universal sells the new anamorphic transfers of VERTIGO and PSYCHO separately, I will not be buying that Hitchcock boxed set. The films all look fine to me, and I can even live with the non-anamorphic VERTIGO and PSYCHO since I've seen the films so many times that I doubt they'll get huge repeat plays.

I hate to say it, but I think the studios have gotten outrageously greedy double and triple dipping their classic titles expecting the public to pounce on every reissue. I mean, even NEW films like the terrible DODGEBALL got a new DVD edition (unrated) a year after its iritial release, and the maers of SIN CITY released a mostly movie only DVD of their cult film this smmer holding back the special two disc edition until December - 6 months after the initial release.

OUTRAGEOUS!

ANd Warners could not BE more stupid holding back BLADE RUNNER like that. One of the films that has the largest cult surrounding it in the last 25 years, and they have an edition that fans would gladly spring for by the millions, and they sit on it!

We don't know the whole story, I guess. If there are rights issues involved or if Ridley Scott is holding out for something else (he's always been prickly about this film), I'd like to know everything before issuing an outright condemnation, but on the surface, it certainly seems stupid.

The three films that Joan Crawford made with David Brian - FLAMINGO ROAD, THE DAMNED DON'T CRY, and THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS - are all among my favorites. He really was THE male actor perfect for her during this period of her movie career.

DR Jennifer - I may head down to the Broadway Flea Market... Or I may not.

;)

I have a desk covered with various papers and stuff that needs to be sorted, filed and/or thrown out.  With a very busy week coming up, it would be nice to start the week with a clean desk - especially since it will most likely get cluttered again by the end of the week.  In any case...

Whether or not I head down to Schubert Alley, I just hope the rain holds off.  -But at least the gray, overcast skies are keeping things cool.

But I believe DR Jason said he might be heading down there, as well as DR Ben.  We shall see.

'Little Rascals' Actor Thomas Bond Dies
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 10:31 a.m. ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Thomas Ross Bond, who played Butch the bully in the ''Our Gang'' and ''The Little Rascals'' serials of the 1930s, has died. He was 79.

Bond died Saturday of complications from heart disease at Northridge Hospital, said his manager, Frank Marks.

Bond played a member of the Gang named Tommy. After his first year he was dropped from the cast but returned later in the role of Butch, the archenemy of Alfalfa.

Bond appeared in dozens of ''Our Gang'' and ''Little Rascals'' features before outgrowing the role.

Born Sept. 16, 1926 in Dallas, Bond got his start at the age of 5 when a talent scout for Hal Roach studios approached him as he was leaving a movie theater with his mother.

The scout ''asked him if he'd be interested in acting, (said) he had a great face and he could set up an appointment with Hal Roach in L.A.,'' Marks said.

His grandmother drove him in what, at the time, was a rugged journey: ''It was all dirt roads from Dallas to L.A,'' Marks said.

In the 1940s, Bond played Jimmy Olsen in two Superman movies and appeared as Joey Pepper in several installments of the ''Five Little Peppers'' serial.

In 1951, Bond quit acting and went into television directing and production work before retiring in 1991.

Bond is survived by his wife, Pauline, son Thomas Ross Bond III and a grandson.

I saw a good bit of the film I HEART HUCKABEES last night on the cable. I didn't see it in the theatre because it sounded like it was trying too hard to be quirky, but after seeing it, it is actually quite good. The chosen milieu is such a strange thing to build a movie around, and it was well-acted, so the quirkiness seemed genuine, the strangeness pleasant and subtle. I missed the first 15 minutes or so, so I will have to see the rest.

Morning all!

Joan Crawford.  Err-sorry to say I can't even think of one movie of hers.

I am so enjoying that feeder box I put up.  We have more birds and squirrels then we can count!  And they are all so very cute.
We're even starting to get some "regulars".  I would so miss all of my animal friends if I ever moved from here.

I'm also happy to say that the four o'clocks I planted are doing very well and I'm getting my flowers back (but still no YELLOW).  I discovered I have the very light, light almost white pink flowers the other day.  :)

Got a lot of chores done yesterday.  The grocery shopping, the lawn cut and the porch blown clean.

Today I shall finish packing and clean up around the house.

To much excitment.

If the transfer of THE BOSTONIANS is actually as bad as its first impression gave me last night, I may simply rip it out of the player and in honor of today's lady for a day (a May Robson reference), put in a Joan Crawford movie, either on tape, laserdisc, or DVD.

I'm leaning toward GOODBYE, MY FANCY.

I'm up, I'm up.

I stayed up quite late, comparing the transfers, new and old, on the Hitch sets.  Since there was no one here to share the information with, I went to bed.

I will say that it's nice to have the enhanced Vertigo and Psycho, but neither looks very good - I believe they used the old elements and just enhanced them, rather than making a new master from whatever negs they have.  And the Vertigo color is the same as the older DVD, on the brownish side, and in no way resembles what the IB Tech prints of this film looked like (I owned one and I know).  The good news is that Vertigo has its original mono track, and that forever shows just how bad the remix was.  Psycho is overtly grainy and there's no reason on earth it should be.  It's not terrible, but if Lowry or one of those companies had done some work on it, it would look great.

Title: Re:WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: bk on September 25, 2005, 09:41:01 AM
The good news is that Topaz, Torn Curtain, The Trouble With Harry, Marnie, and The Birds, all look better to my eye anyway.  They're all brighter transfers, all are sharper, and all have truer colors, especially Torn Curtain and The Birds, the two most improved in the set.  In the case of The Birds, it looks like the element might have been cleaned up.  The others probably use the old elements but they're just improved in the transfer stage.

The menus and extras are exactly the same as the old set.  I'm always happy to upgrade, but Universal really should have gone the extra mile with this set and had Lowry or whoever do the work necessary.

Friday, der Brucer and I headed over to the Eastern Shore immediately after I got off work, for grandladsitting.  His daughter and s-i-l had a wake to attend, although when we got there they were in no hurry to leave.  (This is after we had dashed across the peninsula, a ninety minute drive.  Which will factor in later.)  Parents told us they would probably be back in two hours, tops, and they were out of the house by eight.

The lads were great, and we let them stay up much later than we should have.  But we got them to bed, and then began to wait for the parents to return.

And we waited.

And we waited.

And finally, the parents returned.

It was already past midnight.

Mind, this is der B's daughter, who regularly is screaming at people within five minutes of returning home.  This is the daughter who gets upset with der B and I if we don't call and keep her posted if we're on the road and going to be late to ladsit.

I waited until she was seated on the couch, and then I told her off.  I didn't raise my voice, but I did remind her that neither her father nor I had had dinner yet.  That it would take us ninety minutes to get home, and then the extra time for me to cook our dinners.  And that I had to go to work the next day.

The daughter just stared at me, dumbfounded.  Could I actually be accusing her of being in the wrong about something?

We left shortly after.  Der B hasn't told me whether she's tried to contact him since then.

I'll try to catch up with the posts here after I get back from work tonight.

On the other hand, we did pick up the Season One set of Desperate Housewives.  Since we missed it when it was first being aired, it's fun to watch it now, one episode per night.

What I want to try is to tape the episodes as they air this season, then watch them when we've caught up with the discs.  It makes more sense than watching everything out of order.

Time to go to work.

I love this movie...and I love the score to the musical (I've never seen it performed, though).

I looked up Joan's listing (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001076/) on IMBd.com and the very first (meaning last, chronologically) listing was a made-for-TV movie "Beyond the Water's Edge" where she played a character named Allison Hayes!  Is she playing thee Allison Hayes...the actress?

Watching The Lawless Street, with Randolph Scott.  I don't mean I'm watching it WITH Randy, but he's the star of the movie.  I love Randy, and the film is directed by one of my favorite b-movie helmers, Joseph H. Speaking of the page three dance - I just got back from an engagement party for someone in the office.  It was a great party, great (although kosher) food, about 250 people but all of us from the office seemed to gravitate towards each other at one table.  The lady I share my office with was, until a few weeks ago, laid up with a broken ankle, hobbling around the office with a cane.  Today at the party, she was a real life of the party, bouncing around mingling like a true mingler, hora-ing (that's Jewish dancing) to beat the band.  We're all praying she didn't do damage to her ankle again, especially since this is one of the busiest months of our year tax-wise.    Interesting to see someone you know and share a room with in a different environment than usual.  I never would have expected her to be such a social butterfly.  Live and learn.

I've had a busy afternoon with two DVDs.

First up was THE BOSTONIANS, and all I can say is that someone should hang his head in shame for this transfer being so mediocre.

First off, it's a full frame transfer and that in itself is inexcusable. Obviously a videotape master was simply ported over to DVD, and the murky quality of the color and the general blurriness of medium and long shots give it away.

This is a PRESTIGE picture, a Merchant-Ivory production with a cast that includes Vanessa Redgrave (who was Oscar nominated for this performance), Jessica Tandy, Christopher Reeve, Linda Hunt, and Nancy Marchand (among many other familar faces like Wallace Shawn and Barbara Byrne).

And yet it's treated like some third rate, Z-rated cheapie with lackluster packaging and a zero quality transfer.

I watched it all, but I was gnashing my teeth the entire time.

Joan's character was named Allison Hayes in that TV movie made in 1972, five years before Allison's demise, and the IMDB doesn't list any writing or directing or producing credits, so I don't know if there is any connection.  I assume someone on the creative team did it on purpose.

Nancy Allen's character in The Philadelphia Experiment was named Allison Hayes as well, although the director has said he DID use Allison's name on purpose because he always enjoyed her screen persona.

That is all I know.

Hello.

TOD: Mildred Pierce and Whatever Happened To Baby Jane are the two that first pop into my mind.

I vaguely remember an old movie I saw a long, long time ago which I believe starred  Joan Crawford. It was quite a good movie as well, although I cannot now remember the title..

The plot was Joan Crawford (if it was indeed she) played identical twin sisters.  One had married the others sweetheart (a very wealthy man) years ago, leaving the heartbroken twin to become a  bitter,  penniless old maid.  The man dies and leaves everything to his wife.  The poor twin kills the rich twin and takes her place.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Well FAVORITE Crawford films....hmmm.

QUEEN BEE and THE DAMNED DON'T CRY, I think.

I do enjoy ESTHER COSTELLO and AUTUMN LEAVES, too.

HUMERESQUE is wonderful.

And along with a few other DR's I will add TROG and I SAW WHAT YOU DID.  Oh, and STRAIT-JACKET.

Hello.

TOD: Mildred Pierce and Whatever Happened To Baby Jane are the two that first pop into my mind.

I vaguely remember an old movie I saw a long, long time ago which I believe starred  Joan Crawford. It was quite a good movie as well, although I cannot now remember the title..

When it was finished, I put in (in honor of the B-movie topic of the day a few days ago) IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE!

B-quality material to be sure, but other than a full frame transfer, it couldn't have been sharper or better looking, especially for a movie this old and an independent feature at its core released through United Artists. NO EXCUSE FOR THE BOSTONIANS TO LOOK SO BAD WHEN THIS MOVIE LOOKS SO DECENT!

As for the movie, well, it was obvious ALIEN was based on the plot of this movie, and while its direction was pretty bad and acting ranged from competent to pretty awful, it was only 69 minutes long and a fun cheapie to complete the afternoon of movie watching.

Just taking a break from this paper. I've decided that if I write the first two sections and ask Dr. C. about the third tomorrow, we will have something to discuss besides how much I hate the class and would rather have my toenails pulled out one by one by a sadistic gorilla than to ever have to see him again. Talking about the paper just seems safer.

So I have a plan. And not only that, but I have a reason to put off doing my homework.

I'm still working on "The unicorn is a mythical beast," though.

I've seen a lot of Joan Crawford movies (but certainly not all; many of her 1930s output are terribly dated today and don't get played much), but I don't believe she ever played twins, at least not in any that I've seen.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I like the 5.1 remix of VERTIGO's score. For purists, the original mono ought to be there (and I'm glad it is in the new edition), but I never saw the original film in the 1950s; the first time I saw it was after the reconstruction and theatrical rerelease which had the new multi-channel sound, so that's what I'm used to.

That's a lot more than I knew!  Thanks for the info. ;D

I guess DVDs have prevented theatrical rereleases of these restored classics, but I can remember that when VERTIGO and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA were restored and rereleased to theaters, the theaters were PACKED when I went to see them.

Not only that, but when there was that mini-renaissance of 3-D movies in the early 1980s, the old 3-Ds from the 1950s were shown all over again, and the showings of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER and HOUSE OF WAX were either sold out or close to sold out when I went to see them. I kept hoping KISS ME KATE would come around, but they never booked it.

And these were at first-run movie houses, not revival theaters.

DR MattH, re: veronica mars

DON'T READ IF YOU ARE GOING TO WATCH SEASON 1.

In watching the preview on UPN someone else made a comment that veronica had a rich boyfriend.  I am assuming they were talking about logan or duncan (hopefully logan).  I think it would be creepy if she started dating her "brother" (or who she thought was her brother).

I forget who i thought was at her door when we were discussing it. I think i said logan/duncan/gang guy or black friend.  I'm not sure if logan would be too busy on the bridge to stop by.  Or perhaps this when he will show up all bloody?

Regardless I cannot wait for the season premiere.  Just a warning, if you watch it same day, can you not spoil it.  I won't get to watch the shows till Saturday since my sis will be taping it for me.

MattH - just give a listen to the original sound mix - if you can listen to the remix after that, you're a better man than I, Gunga Din.  Those ridiculous redone gunshots, the fact that all the foley was redone and poorly - you'll just be astonished.  The score, of course, sounds lovely in stereo, but it's not worth it, if you ask me.

I'm looking forward to see all of these except maybe "Chicken Little."  I don't know if it'll be something I'm interested in (even as good as it probably will be).

Otherwise, I'm really looking forward to (the non-child-friendly) "Rent" and "The Producers!"  Imagine if they're both as good as we probably all want them to be, and they're both nominated for the Best Movie Oscar®...how long has it been when there have been TWO (potentially) good musicals up for Best Movie in the same year??

Yes, I'll be excorting Hisaka.  Don't aks too many questions.

Just watched Night Visitor, one of the single worst movies ever made - my name appears twice in the credits - once in the cast roll (I do what is called a "brief cameo") and once in the thank yous.  I'd completely forgotten I had anything to do with this film - apparently I did a dialogue polish, but the "director" (former producer Rupert Hitzig doing his only directorial outing) preferred the terrible dialogue of the original, save for two or three scenes where I recognize a little "me", including the meet cute of the teen boy and girl at the beginning of the film.  So, I'm thanked for my dialogue contributions, I suppose, and also the fact that I renamed most of the characters, giving them all Hitchcock names.  This made me laugh out loud.  Loomis, Crane, Fremont, Devareaux (from Topaz), Townsend (from North by Northwest), Lisa, Grace (I give one character the name Lisa Grace as in Lisa Fremont/Grace Kelly and another character Kelly Fremont as in Lisa Fremont/Grace Kelly.    I don't know what Allen Garfield and Michael J. Pollard were on during filming, but whatever it was, it was POTENT.

He was basically buying bottled water, three cases of twenty-four bottles each.  The problem was, the bottles are sold in packages of six bottles, each package wrapped in plastic.  Mr. Yuppie insisted that the price listed for the wrapped package of six was instead intended for the case of twenty-four.  The problem was, I had already rung up his entire order, and he dashed over to the Customer Service desk...without first paying.  And, at the time, there were three other people/couples waiting in line.  I had to call over one of the managers, who had to put his order on a computer hold, so we could move his basket out of the way and I could help the others in line.

Of course, after he had been put in his place by Customer Service Mr. Yuppie was mad as hell.  We all just smiled pleasantly and watched him leave.

No, that's not quite true.  We all smiled pleasantly and watched him leave...while trying our best to keep from laughing out loud.

I never had the chance to tell him "Have a nice day."  Besides, I prefer "Have a pleasant (fill in time of day, usually afternoon or evening)."  Mr. Yuppie at that point wasn't going to have a pleasant anything.   ::)

How long are you staying in LA, DR Hisaka?

I'm packing a coat as a "Just in Case".  I know that most peoples idea of "cool" is my idea of "Freezing cold".

Last year the hotels in Bethesda and NY didn't have the heat turned on yet.  I needed several extra blankets.

Jose where is Columbus Circle?

Columbus Circle is at the Southwest corner of Central Park.  Basically, it's 59th/60th & Broadway-Central Park South.

I want to hit The Time Warner Center - which is a complex of shops, restaurants and hotels.  And it houses the largest Williams-Sonoma on the east coast!

Time Warner Center- The Shops at Columbus Circle (http://www.shopsatcolumbuscircle.com/scs/user/index.aspx)

*And the views from the third and fourth floor balconies are wonderful!  And they even have some comfy seating up there too.

Jose - this is someplace else I've not visited - glad it's on the tour!

:)

The place was only completed about a year ago, and some of the restaurants in the "Restaurant Collection" are still "in process" - much to the frustration of many an affluent diner.  *However, I did notice that Per Se actually "offers" some "souvenirs" - they have copies of their daily menus available at their display stand.  -I actually went into a mild shock when I saw that the Prix Fixe menu started at $265 per person!  And that was just for Lunch!?!?!?

And, No, I am not treating.

;)

But the TWC really is a nice place to check out - even though some people may call it too industrial and too commercial.  But, hey, it's New York City.

DR MATTH did you know that during the original release of IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE - the producers and a "world famous insurance company" offered $50,000 to anyone who could prove that IT was not living on Mars (another name for death, by the way) at that time?

I saw that poster on the back of the DVD cover, but the writing was SO tiny. I'm glad you cleared up what they were offering the money for!

I just got home from the documentary Paper Clips. Really powerful. It was followed by Phillip Gans, a Holocaust survivor telling us his story. It was a very emotional evening. They gave us each a paper clip and a rubber bracelet with "Tolerance" and Mr. Gans id number on it.  I plan to wear mine for quite awhile. Tomorrow it will be shown to all the 8th graders in town and Mr. Gans will tell them his story.  What a great lesson in Tolerance.

After doing my cleaning chore of the day, I settled in with the DVD of A DELICATE BALANCE. None of the American Film Theatre DVDs is particularly sterling looking (even though they are anamorphic transfers), but I'm still glad to have this. I've always liked the play and think Paul Scofield is just wonderful in this. Katharine Hepburn's performance is a bit too flowery for my taste. I would rather have seen someone like Jean Simmons or Teresa Wright or Kim Hunter do Agnes in the film. Hepburn, of course, was a much bigger film star than any of them at that point, so I'm not surprised they went with her.

On that DVD was also an interesting interview with Edward Albee which I watched and also an interview with the director of photography for the movie (and also for THE HOMECOMING). Both had some wonderful stories to tell.

I was able to get through the more than 2 hour film and those interviews because the football game on CBS ran long pushing back the start time for COLD CASE, so I just skipped it all together. This is typical during pro football season. I miss more episodes than I see, but I catch back up with them during those months (December, January, March) when they air reruns.

Hi folks!
Today I went to Hooters to watch the Indianapolis Colts play football. (I bet that sentence has not appeared on this site before.) Yes, there is a Hooter's in Manhattan. How it stays open I do not know, but they have a lot of TVs so you an watch the games in relative comfort.

Then I met up with the Punk (who says to say "Hello") and we went to see new David Cronenberg film A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. I had a feeling it could be good, and I am a big fan of Maria Bello. Solid acting, a great character turn by William Hurt,  and an interesting basic story line were the positives.

But there were too many flaws for me to really recommend the film as a whole. It had a really weird mixture of realism and cardboard stock action stuff. An urge to explore the depth of its ideas did battle with an equal and opposite urge to oversimplify.

However, I can come away knowing I've seen more of Maria Bello than ever before.
