Title: A DIFFERENT MEAT
Post by: bk on September 27, 2005, 12:08:22 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that I am done with pastrami and am moving on to a different meat, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're out doing a meat and greet.

Tremolo - one of Brian Poole's backing grop with their name spelt correctly for a change!
"Silence Is Golden".

Hello DR Hisaka. Spring flowers are in bloom everywhere here. It's a beautiful time of the year - better in a couple of weeks when the warmer weather arrives.

Good evening DR Tomovoz!
I can imagine how beautiful the flowers you'd see are and Spring is the season just for them.

DR HISAKA have a great time in LA!  We want photos!

Thank you, DR Jrand. Oh, yes! I’ve prepared a 256mb memory card in my camera and will be able to take about 300 photos. ::)

An original souvenir program of West Side Story is my most prized one after all. It's not pricy much even now but bucause the film is quite memorable for me.

TOD:

At one point in my life these things meant something to me. But over the years I sold them on Ebay and financed two trips to LA. (plane, car and spending $$$)

I plan to do the same thing again next month so I can take a 2 week trip somewhere.

Let other people enjoy what I enjoyed.

My favorite souvenir programs are from the Hasty Pudding shows I was able to go to while at law school and even after when they brought the shows to New York.  Several of the Hasty Pudding writers ended up at the BMI Workshop and I was able to ask them to autograph the souvenir programs for the shows they did way way back when.  As of now, I don't think I'll ever be throwing those away.

Otherwise, my favorite program for many years was the HELLO DOLLY movie souvenir program.  It was just a lot of fun to read.   It's terribly worn out now from having been handled too much, but I'd never throw it away.

Ditto, DR FJL.  The abridged cast list on IBDB made it just another dead end for me, too.

IBDB will pay for what it's done to me!

Hmmm... As for most prized souvenir program... Well, I guess my Playbill for Biloxi Blues signed by everyone in the cast except for Mr. Matthew Broderick - who, apparently, was staying in between shows that day.  It was the first play I saw on Broadway.

Poster-wise... Hmm... I have a bunch of them.  In storage.  So...

I used to have a stack somewhere of stagebills from the Kennedy Center, from some of the National Symphony Concerts when Rostropovich was still the music director/conductor - but that stack has eluded me over the past couple of years.  I really wish it would magically appear somewhere in one of my various boxes of stuff.  Going to those concerts was, well, simply, magical.  And I sort of went semi-regularly when I was in high school - students tickets were way cheap - and I'd always sit in the first two rows audience left - better to see the hands of the pianist.  ;)

Well, I still have to have my breakfast and get cleaned up before heading down to Ripley-Grier.  The search for our Lola, Meg and Gloria starts today.  It should be a good couple days of auditions.  However, it will be kind of weird just seeing women for three days straight. -Pardon the quasi-pun.  Ah, well...

OK... Gotta run.

When I finally realized that my program collection was too big to keep I threw everything away except for two - one from a play and one from a movie.

I kept my A CHORUS LINE program.  It contained programs from all the various productions I had seen over the years including the original NYSF production at the Public which was not even a printed program but several mimeographed pages on multi-colored paper (for the younger readers, mimeograph was a form of printing done with typed mylar pages on a machine that used a very messy ink; for the older readers at least it wasn't a ditto machine - remember that smell and that purple ink?).

The movie program I kept was THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT.

TOD:

To tell the truth, I don't really view any of my Playbills as treasures as much as reminders of the shows I've seen.  I guess the rarest things I have are a Playbill from Broadway, Broadway that's autographed by James Coco and Geraldine Fitzgerald.  I once bought a Jennie Playbill on eBay (I thought I was bidding on the CD--d'oh!)  The programs that I probably care for more than any others would be:

Over Here! (just for that terrific cast listing)
A Chorus Line (Original Cast and with the original show artwork)
Chicago (from the Philly tryout)

I have a slew of musical souvenir programs, mostly from the late 70s.  Nothing in particular stands out for me, though--the things eventually became so lame that I stopped buying them.

Favorite movie programs:
Hey There, It's Yogi Bear!
Nashville
A Boy Named Charlie Brown

DR MattH, can you post where you get the ratings from? (hopefully it's in millions of viewers vs shares, since I don't really understand that!).

I'm not sure which is my favorite day of tv viewing, I guess Thursday night has always been the best for me.  I really think Monday is the worst night.

Btw, THE AMAZING RACE has its TWO HOUR season premiere tonight. YEAH!  Who will be watching?

I'm up, I'm up.  WHY I'm up is anyone's guess.

I should have looked at the ibdb to make sure they had all the answers - damn them, damn them all to hell.  Someone should enlighten them.  If they want to be thought of as a proper reference place, then they need to be more thorough.

DR Dan - THERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL was the answer the week that Joey Heatherton was the answer to the question about the famous sex kitten who was in the play.

SO BK, what was the accident that turned playwright Mary Drayon from acting to writing?  There seem to be a great many years between her performing and playwriting credits.

I almost ventured a last-minute guess that the person might be Mary Orr, the playwright on whose story ALL ABOUT EVE was based.  Would I have gotten partial credit for getting the first name right?  :)

Apparently, Mary Drayton had a serious car accident at some point - I happen to have a first edition of The Playroom (I guess that Random House along with MGM thought the play was going to be a winner), and that's what it says in her bio.

Oh, dear - as I look out my window I see a caravan of trucks and honey wagons pulling up, which means they are shooting some film or TV show on my street.  A HUGE truck, maybe the generator, has just parked in front of my house, and there are production people wandering about on the streets.  The honey wagon (dressing rooms, etc.) is across the street.  I wonder if I'll be able to come and go as I please, car-wise, and I wonder if I give up my parking space if it will be there when I return.  Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Good morning, all!  Last night I had a wonderful dinner with DRGinny and her wonderful spouse Richard, who unlike me has kept his hair.  DR Ginny baked a fantastic pecan pie which was quite yummilicious, as were the meatloaf and veggies.  Reputations were made and destroyed, people were found and lost.  It was all quite festive.

Today I attack Miami University to address music and theatre students on professional careers.  I am quite looking forward to it.  Tomorrow morning, I will stop by the library to catch up on all things important to my internet soul:  email, eBay, and HHW, before I fly home.

DRJose, God willing, I should be home by 8:30 tomoprrow night.  Give me a call when you can.

The stories behind flop plays are probably just as interesting as flop musicals.  Frinstance, the writing team of Ron Clark and Sam Bobrick managed to get four comedies mounted, each with top-notch directors.  And each show flopped badly.  How did they keep getting produced?  (I do have a sentimental favorite in their Wally's Cafe--we did the show when I was in college and it actually went over well.)

Why doesn't someone write a book about flop plays?

I had to buy a new cap yesterday; the one I'm wearing in my avatar is fraying to death.  It's dark brown and quite tasteful.

DRCharles Pogue, I discovered in the new books at the library a mystery series I'd never heard of.  The author is Edward Marston and the books are about an Elizabethan acting troupe.  The newest is THE MALEVOLENT COMEDY.  I see there is also a new Bruce Alexander mystery about Henry Fielding's brother.

DR Dan - A book about flop plays would be interesting, especially about how people with one flop after another still managed to get their next one produced.

I've wondered if a book compiling all of BK's trivia contests might be a valuable volume, both from an entertainment perspective and educational perspective.  I know the contests are all on the internet if you look for them, but maybe with a few added insights????

DR Jennifer, I get them from both Zap2It (which usually just gives the ratings and shares) and VARIETY which also gives that, the age 18-49 rating and share (the one advertisers care about; I'm a nonentity to them even though I continue to spend a good deal of money), and the total viewers in millions.

Since you're not a VARIETY subscriber, you're not privy to that, but if you're ever curious about how many folks watched a certain episode of a show, just ask and I can check it out for you.

Maybe I'll write a book about flop plays.  I think a good title for it would be Maybe I'll Write A Book About Flop Plays.  They are apparently shooting just up the street (north) of my house.  At some point I shall walk out there and see what the story is.  I can see the honey wagon with the dressing rooms directly out my kitchen window (where my laptop is), so I should be able to perhaps catch a glimpse of some of the actors, not that I can see that far.    I don't believe any of the cast has arrived, which probably means a ten o'clock start.  The "No Parking" signs they plastered on my side of the street say they could be here as late as ten this evening.

The "movie police" are here, too.  I wonder if they'll try to stop people from walking their dogs.

As for a theater souvenir program, I bought a few growing up, but the one I prize the most was for a Judy Garland concert in 1965. It was basically a career-oriented program featuring stills from her movies and concert appearances. No mention of her TV series, so I have to suspect they were programs that were made up for Carnegie Hall or the Met concerts she did.

For "Big Brother 6" Fans (ONLY!):

For an interesting and very fun bit of closure on the previous season, you could do a lot worse than visit www.thefishbowl.com, an internet radio station.

They interviewed several of the "outcasts" last week and the audio is available.

I spent nearly an hour listening to interviews with Michael (whose home was hosting many of the fun people for the weekend), James (who has PLENTY to say) and Janelle (who reveals stuff about Howie he may NEVER live down).

It's a revelation to hear their experiences with the "families" of the fiendsheep (who were all friendly and gracious and "apologetic") and the way the fiendsheep acted at the wrap party and in the hotel they all stayed in.

I enjoyed last night's episode of "Surface" on NBC, too!

It was quirky, off-beat, and was surprisingly light and dark in tone as it switched between the family with kids and the man and woman trying to get to the truth on Sullivan's Island.

It is the ONLY para-sci-fi-newcomer this season to resonate with me.

Read in VARIETY today that ABC is interested in programming Saturday nights again, not just with movies or reruns.

They've asked producers to come up with shows that can be made for 1/2 million dollars per episode or less.

They've given them three genres to focus on:

1. competition-based shows (SURVIVOR)

2. feel good reality (EXTREME MAKEOVER)

3. information based competition (MILLIONAIRE)

So, ABC is looking to program an entire night of new reality shows. Don't know if it will fly, but they're making the effort.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind a musical-variety show on Saturday night. Maybe a little hipper than LAWRENCE WELK (though I watched it all the time), but certainly something for those who like singing and dancing.

The networks are completely blind to the possibilities to musical-variety.

And, of course, there aren't many networks who ever had the solid gold line-up that CBS once had on Saturday nights:

ALL IN THE FAMILY
MASH
THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW
THE BOB NEWHART SHOW
THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW

DR Dan -  The first time I was aware of BABY WANT A KISS was when its poster was on Max Bialystock's wall in the original film of THE PRODUCERS.  Bialystock's wall seemed to have the real cream of the flops.

Hmm...maybe that's a title for a flop-play book, CREAM OF THE FLOPS.  :)

God, I wish THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW were still on the air. Just brilliant.

When I was in Louisville, I bought souvenirs from every touring production that came through. T-shirts (which I actually wore to school. Oh! The horror!), posters, postcards, magnets, programs. You name it, I probably bought it. I don't buy any theatre memorabilia anymore. Not since I moved to NYC and have Broadway in my backyard.

I still collect window cards, though. I have some great ones - a lot of flops, but a couple of rare ones, too. Like the 6 ft. x 1.5 ft. CHORUS LINE poster that they put out when the show became the longest-running musical in Broadway history. It features all the pictures of the Lines (the logo with all the various casts) as well as a listing of every dancer who had done the show up to that point. It's currently rolled up in a tube in my closet because I can't afford to have it framed.

I also keep the Playbills for every show I see. Especially the flops. I ususally get two or three copies of the ones I know will bomb. Right now I have 192 Playbills/Showbills/Stagebills, etc. And that's just since I moved to NYC!!

A Saturday night of all reality shows.  I hope each and every one of them loses all half-a-million an episode.  This is something the world does not need.

I went back to sleep for ninety minutes.  Now I see people lounging around, so I assume they may have started shooting.   Just saw someone in their bathrobe hurrying down the street - an actor?

And re: tonight's TAR.

I think it will be different than we're used to seeing.  With teams of four it will probably be more difficult to get to know the players and even to remember who is on each team.

I don't think there are that many kids. Only 2 little ones, and a handful of teenagers.  There are many teams of grown siblings ...  It will be interesting to me to see how the grown-up teams do compared to the ones with the kids.  I will also be interested to see how the tasks are divided (do the kids have to do any of the tasks?)
Title: Re:A DIFFERENT MEAT
Post by: Jennifer on September 27, 2005, 09:59:04 AM
One more TAR comment.

I don't think they are travelling as extensively. But I'm not certain they are just staying in America. I know they are in Canada and the US.  But I'm fairly certain they do more than that.  But I agree, watching the teams do tasks in North America would not be nearly as exciting or interesting.  Part of the thrill of TAR is seeing the beautiful settings and learning about the cultures.  I'm hoping we will still get to see a lot of this aspect.

Brian D'Arcy James was brilliant at the Alan Menken concert at Merkin Hall last night, as was Kerry Butler, BTW.  I think people are going to be delighted with the "new" LITTLE MERMAID numbers, which were debuted last night, and the two of them were fantastic performing those numbers, as was Michael McGrath.

How many  concerts go on every single night?  How many new/old musicals play the current festival (most of the shows I've seen listed have been around for six to ten years)?  How many "readings" of new musicals happen every day?  How many workshops of new musicals now perform for the public every day?  It's non-stop.  Is something maybe a little out of control?

Remember that many teams don't have kids.  And also of the teams that have kids, some of them are 17ish.  There are only 2 little kids.  And a few other 11-13s.  There will be a lot of teams made up of adults.

It will be interesting to see if any of the kids turn out to be more interesting than the adults.  Or if their parents will let them control any of the game.  Maybe not the 8 yr old.  But perhaps some 16 yr olds will be smarter than the adults on their team.

Re: MEDIUM (no spoilers0.

One thing I like about the show is that they try hard not to throw too much of her abilities in our faces.  She dreams things, and she is passionate about the cases she works on.  But it all seems totally plausible.

We know that she sees so many more things.  But the writers don't force the viewers to handle too much.

One thing I wonder though is if the real Alison really solves cases. And if most of what she sees happens in her dreams.  It's a very interesting concept.  And since we all dream, it sort of makes it more relatable.

TOD - By far, my favorite item is the souvenir program book that I bought at my first Broadway show, Cabaret, in 1967.  We saw the original cast, waited at the stage door, and I got autographs from Joel Grey, Lotte Lenya, Jack Gilford, and Bert Convy.  While standing there, we also saw Robert Preston and Mary Martin come out from I Do, I Do!.  Probably 20 years later, when Joel Grey toured to Cincinnati's Music Hall in Cabaret, I took along that program book and he signed it again!

DR Jason, I retract you from my attempt at humor.  Did not realize it was such a sensitive issue as to merit a threat.

I'm curious...do you (or anyone else) know who wrote the new lyrics?

If any New Yorkers are fans of Jane Powell, she will be appearing in the flesh at the Museum of Television and Radio on Sept. 29th when they show her TV special from RUGGLES OF RED GAP. She will do a question and answer thingy afterwards which will be moderated by Rick McKay.

I wish I could be there to see it!  :(

As a matter of fact, in the next several weeks the museaum will be screening several vintage television musicals (most from the 50s and 60s). Some interesting titles http://www.mtr.org/

I have this album!  I think it's been posted here before (not in a while, though), but the music to "You'll Never Get Away From Me" in Gypsy was actually written as "I'm In Pursuit of Happiness" for RUGGLES.

I'm an actor. Of course it is.

I'm kidding - sort of. I've always have body-image issues, but never as severely as when I got to graduate school. My director actually told me three days into the program that he would have cast me in the role of Freddy Eynsford-Hill and not as his understudy had I been 20 lbs. lighter. He then suggested to me that if I ever expected to play Toby or any other lead in SWEENEY TODD that I should lose that 20 lbs. So I did. And then he told me I needed to tone and tighten.  He yelled across the orchestra pit one night, "Suck it in, Bratton!" Ever since then I've considered myself to be a 'husky' actor when in truth, I'm probably not nearly as big as I think I am.

Since moving to NYC and taking a desk job I have gained at least 15 pounds. Unfortunately, the longer I'm at this job, the more depressed I get and the more depressed I get, the more I eat. It's a cycle.  I know a lot of it is my fault, so I try not to let it get to me too much. But it does.

You can thank Dr. David Herendeen for that. Who, by the by, happened to call me at work today. I'd have rather pulled my own tooth with a rusty pair of pliers than speak to that man again.

DR Jennifer, I can explain what the rating and share terms mean very easily.

The rating is the percentage of TV sets in the country tuned to a certain show at a certain time. Share means the percentage of the viewing audience that is watching a particular show at a certain time.

For example - last night, CSI: MIAMI had a 11.2 rating and a 17 share. That means 11.2 per cent of AMerican TVs were tuned to CBS for the 10 o'clock hour last night for at least part of the show. That amounts to 17 per cent of the American viewing public.

I thoroughly enjoyed MEDIUM when I watched it this afternoon. I thought the comclusion was kind of abrupt. I guess I like for them to bask in the solution to the puzzle, and this show doesn't often do that. Still, fine show.

On the other hand, I also DVRed the new Ricky Gervais show EXTRAS on HBO. Again, he's playing an insensitive boob just like his character from the original British series THE OFFICE. He's not quite as clueless, of course, but he often says or does things that get him in embarrassing, humiliating situations.

The first episode, at least, dragged for me though there was one sequence with his idiot agent that did make me laugh.

DRJASON - I think all of us who appear in public in some way or another, and ALL of us do in one way or another - have some issues about our appearance.

I lost 31 pounds this summer, but I still feel very heavy.  I want to weight 185 lbs NOT 199.  So we struggle on.

And I think you are correct in thinking that you think you are huskier than you really are.  If we are told certain things by certain people at certain times, we never forget it or get over it.  What we see in the mirror is not always reality.  Well....sometimes it is!  LOL.

I like Geena Davis a LOT - ever since DR CP's THE FLY!

And she looks great in the promos for her new show.

BUT I really don't want to watch another network show which is just an excuse for uber liberal writers and producers to present their political views in a one-sided way.  We get enough of that on the news channels.

Well, DR JRand, I haven't seen COMMANDER IN CHIEF, but I'm not so sure I'd judge it before it airs. It's on ABC, the most conservative of the big three networks, so I don't think the show is going to be featuring the ideology that was featured on NBC's THE WEST WING, for example.

I'm just surmising here, but if you're a Geena Davis fan (I can take or leave her, so that's why I won't be watching), I'd watch or record at least the first episode.

Geena Davis looks AMAZING in the promos for her new show and I can't wait to see it. I don't really remember her in THE FLY (it's been a while since I last saw it, and basically all I remember is Jeff Goldblum coming out of that pod stark naked), but I fell in love with Geena in "A League of Their Own." I'm very much looking forward to her new series.

BK, re:  Pastrami...LANGERS, best pastrami in the world.  I had some again last night.  Harlan Ellison turned me on to it.  Delicious!

elmore:  I've been a fan of Ed Marston's Nicholas Bracewell/ Elizabethan mysteries for several years now.  Have many of them, both in paper and hardback.

mattH:  I love EXTRAS and I love that the most outrageously funny things are put in the guest star's mouth.  I howled with laughter when Kate Winslet said:  "I think they've overdone the whole holocaust film thing.  I mean we get it...It was grim...Press on."

Then she went on to say the only reason she was doing a holocaust movie was because it was a sure-fire Oscar winner.  Then added when she saw the woman with cebral palsy on the set that that was the other way to win an Oscar, play someone afflicted.

I fell out of my chair with laughter because I have told people about my "holocaust/gimp" theory for years.  Surefire way to win an Oscar...be in a movie about the holocaust or play someone mentally or physcially afflicted.

I have many theatre programs I cherish, but most prominent among them:  I have a programme from the play version of Beau Geste which starred Olivier; the original programme from Barrymore's Hamlet in London at the Haymarket; an original programme of The National Theatre's premiere production of Hamlet that starred Peter O'Toole and was directed by Olivier.  A programme from a stage production of Rafael Sabatin's SCARAMOUCHE that British Matinee idol/Actor-Manager John Martin-Harvey toured in though out the twenties.

Movie programmes:  An original from the premiere of DON JUAN starring John Barrymore...a silent film that had a synchronized music soundtrack.   I also have a programme from the Australian premiere of the silent Beau Geste, starring Ronald Colman.

Went to lunch with Miss Tammy Minoff and by the time we finished, filming had wrapped.

Well, ONE of my test books arrived, the softcover version - it looks swell, but since I'm  not ordering the softcover version it seems rather inane that the hardcover did not arrive with it.  It's supposedly coming in the next day or two.  I now have to make the decision whether to order the books today without having seen it (the softcover has no errors) or wait until it arrives.  Sickening.  If I order today, I'll have books by next Wednesday probably - if I wait, probably not until next Friday or the following Monday, but still well before the 15th which is when I was hoping to begin shipping.  I'll keep you posted.

About EXTRAS:

Well, the theories Kate Winslet espoused about winning an Oscar have been around for ages. I didn't find them especially unique, have been hearing and reading critics saying this for decades. Maybe they landed with authority because she has lost 4 Oscars and is young enough to more than likely win and/or lose many more. What made her sex talk dryly amusing was the fact that she was wearing a nun's habit while delivering it. But I didn't think that sex talk plot had much humor at all.

I just read that the premiere episode of EXTRAS is actually the third one they shot, and that the first two give some foundation to the show missing from that episode. The Ben Stiller episode next week is the second one done while the third episode to air is actually the pilot and according to the VARIETY critic the least funny of the three sent to critics to view.

One other thing I didn't realize is that the agent whom  I found very amusing is Ricky Gervais' producing/writing partner on this venture, Stephen Merchant. I had no idea.

Well, DR Jennfier, since you were talking about MEDIUM, here's the face-off between CBS and NBC in number of viewers during that 10 p.m. hour as taken from VARIETY:

And at 10, "CSI: Miami" may have been the night's top-rated program (5.5/13 in 18-49, 16.7 million viewers overall), but this was one of its lowest firstrun scores to date. NBC's "Medium" (5.0/12 in 18-49, 12.9 million viewers overall) closed the gap between the crime skeins, rising week-to-week.

Evening all!

I'm very busy at work trying to get everything caught up but I don't think I'm going to make it.  Just when I make a dent in the pile, another one shows up!

I’m getting some ribbing about going to NY again.  Especially after the first time, chuckle.  They want to know who “he” is.

It's pouring down rain as I type this.  I hope I don't bring the rain with me for our trip.   :P

Now that Jane has joined the rest of the ladies at the Comfort Inn (I am right that all the ladies from out of town are at the same hotel, right?)  I think we should dub the Comfort Inn the **Official Ladies of HHW Hotel in NYC**   8)

I wonder if we will all be on the same floor?

Glad to hear that DR Ginny and Elmore had such a nice visit.  Pecan Pie!  Yum!!!  And home made too!!

Someday, DR Jane, I will have this house redone.  I know there is no “someday” on the calendar but I’m sure it will happen.

Since I am sure he lurks on the most popular site on the internet:  Happy Birthday, Mr. Loaf!

Does DR Ginny's pecan pie travel well?  ;)

Have a great talk.

...And I'll be sure to take a little break during my dinner date tomorrow night, and give you a call. ;D

The honey wagon just turned the corner and is now parked on the street that runs east and west rather than the one that runs north and south.  If there are any interesting actors I'll let you know.

"Honey wagon" - ???

At first I thought that was the term for the food service truck... Then I thought it was the term for the trailer that the young starlets will be changing in... Then...  Hmm..

Honey wagon - ???

Remember when Saturday nights brought us "The Golden Girls"?

And "Love Boat"?

And "Saturday Night at the Movies"?

(I know a few of you have fond memories of "The Lawrence Welk Show", but please don't go there).

:D

And "Fantasy Island"!!!

And just how many times did Barbie Benton appear on there?!?!?

;)

And I have to admit that both "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" provided ideal settings for the male guest stars each week to appear in swim trunks!

;D

I tried to find a picture of that CHORUS LINE poster. It's nowhere to be found. I guess I'll have to photograph it myself. I talked to the guy at Triton Gallery about it. He said the last time he saw one was about 8 years ago and it sold for $150 unframed. I got it on Ebay for $10.75. :D

Hmm... I know of at least one if not two copies somewhere in storage... Hmm...

I have chosen to go see the THE PAVILION starring Brian D'Arcy James during my New York trip. It is off-Broadway, but I had hoped to be able to see Brian in something while I am there, and this play just started.

Brian is the nephew of my favorite TV actor, Brian Kelly (of FLIPPER fame).

Haven't decided what night to  go, but likely will be Monday or Tuesday.

The Pavilion is a wonderful play by one of my favorite present-day/living playwrights, Craig Wright.  -Who also happened to be one of the head writers for HBO's "Six Feet Under".  -And he actually writes some cool, quirky music too.

Brian D'Arcy James is a wonderful actor, and just a darn nice person to boot.  The writing team I worked with up at Williamstown are close friends with him - would you like me to see if they could set up a meeting?  -It's just too bad he's not singing in this show - what a voice!

Am also considering seeing  A SOLDIERS STORY which stars Taye Diggs. It sounds quite good...has anyone heard anything on either play (I read one review of PAVILION which gave it a thumbs up).

Little by little my days in New York a filling up!!

A Soldier's Play is a good play.  Very "heavy" material.  I remember a student production of it back when I was in school.  Powerful stuff!

However... I've heard "mixed" reviews of the current production from a couple of friends of mine.  They've all said that they liked the production, but that it was just a good production, and not a great or special one.

However...  There is Taye Diggs...  So...

Nah... It's just New York City.

I just found out that my friend, Daniel, will be making his Broadway debut in THE WOMAN IN WHITE. Good for him!!

Cool beans!  -There will actually be a bunch of "Broadway debuts" listed in that Playbill.

My friend, Sean, is also in the cast.  I'm sooo happy for him.  This show will not be his Broadway debut.  He accomplished that feat with Bombay Dreams.  Alas, he joined the show a few days before they posted their closing notice.

 :-X

And my buddy, Jeff, has been brought up from DC to play Upright Bass in the pit of the show too!

FYI: There will be a mini-HHW gathering of NYCers on Thursday night. We're seeing "Mildred Pierce" at the Clearview Cinemas in Chelsea on 23rd Street (just across from the Krispy Kreme!) at 7pm.  Tickets are $6. I know last week's viewing of "All About Eve" was sort of short-notice, but I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to come out and see Ms. Crawford this week.

Hmm...  We'll be in callbacks until 6:30... Probably cutting it a bit close... But I'll try...

Cameron is the King of Merchandising. How do you think he makes all of his money??

And he's also the king of "Cast Gifts" too!  I have some friends who were in the First National Companies of Les Miserables - and the various trinkets he bestowed on them...  Amazing!  French lead crystal paperweights with the Cosette logo, and "First National" on them.  OH!  And I still remember that opening party in DC...  They projected that image all over the place!  Including at the bottom of the hotel pool!

Still, it tickles me to visualize Jose, with folks in tow, on a walking tour of NYC's great places to eat this, that or the other.

He wholly embraces the joys of eating and seems to leave no stone unturned seeking out culinary delights.

Thank you.

Yes, I have called next Wednesday's trek, "The HHW Eating and Walking and Eating and Walking Tour - New York City Edition - 2005" - or something like that.  But, really there's not much eating involved - well, at least on the "planned" list.  Right now:

-A donut from the Donut Plant - And, yes, you can share.  In fact, sharing will be encouraged since those donuts are quite sizable.  They also have some wonderful flavors, and it would be good to try a little bit of this one and a little bit of that one.

-A bubble tea at T&T in Chinatown.  -Or you can opt for one of their fruit shakes or smoothies.  Or even a cup of one their regular teas - black or green; hot or iced.

-A chocolate truffle and/or a cup of hot cocoa from Marie-Belle in SoHo.  -And the hot cocoa can be ordered European style - made with water, not milk - and in a small cup (demitasse).

-A sample of cheese and/or deli meat from a salumeria in Little Italy.

-A cupcake from Magnolia. -Or the banana pudding, if you prefer.

-A sample of a brownie from "Fat Witch" in Chelsea Market.

-And then whatever one wants to have for lunch and dinner that day.

...And all of that will be consumed between the hours of 10:00am and 10:00pm.  And over the span of four and a half miles.  It's really not that much food - and calories - at all.  Yes, it may seem heavy on the sweets, but what is the "harm" in a sample of a Fat Witch brownie.  -Heck, it comes on a toothpick!

And while we knosh our way across and up Manhattan, we'll be visiting some "only in New York" shops and boutiques.  Passing by some wonderful architecture.  Walking through history - literally.  And enjoying each other's company.

I've always liked searching out the new and unusual and tucked away.  And I don't restrict that policy to just food.

:)

As for weight issues and body image issues...

I'm not exactly sure when it happened or even why, but it did happen - maybe it was when I turned 30.  I suddenly became very happy with my body - extra poundage and all.  Would I still like to lose a few - well, a couple more - pounds.  Yes.  Would I someday like to fit into size 32 waist jeans again?  Yes.  (I think the last time I wore a 32, I was 13.)  Would I like to feel the "freedom" to take off my shirt in a club, or even just on a hot summer day walking down the beach.  Yes.  But that's just being human.

I'm sure there were and are other factors involved with this whole "acceptance", but, I can truly say that I'm not as concerned with my weight and my appearance as much as I used to be.  -However, I am getting more concerned, well, more aware of my health - which is good thing.

Just remember, there is a difference between looking healthy and being healthy.

...And as for all those twinks and "Chelsea boys"... well... Just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

:)

See above.

Maybe the Ladies of HHW should check to see if a multi-room, multi-bathroom suite is available at the Comfort Inn.  Once you divide the cost of the room by three, it may end up being cheaper.

???

Just a random thought.

BONES tonight was the best of the three episodes of the show I have seen. A really good mystery and pleasing interaction between the ensemble cast. Growing to like the characters more and more each week, so this one's a keeper, that is, as long as Fox keeps it on the air.

It's now off for the month of October while Fox has baseball playoffs. And I know that the plans right now are for Fox to move it after AMERICAN IDOL when it returns in January, hoping that it will grow into the same kind of monster hit that HOUSE did last season when it started off with mediocre ratings and then became a smash when IDOL preceded it.

HOUSE is supposedly going to move to Monday night at 8 followed by '24' in January. At least, this was the plan this summer.

Well... Enough about me... well...  Just one more thing...

The auditions were a wonderful experience.  The casting director brought in some amazing ladies for us to see and listen to.  We had Tony nominees, even a Tony winner!  We had a couple of Olivier Award nominees, oh, and a winner there too!  As I looked down the list of names this morning before we started, I knew that we were in for a wonderful day.  Heck, we even had four(!) former Mrs. Potts from Beauty & The Beast!

And the list for tomorrow looks just as wonderful.

*Alas, it was a little strange seeing just women today.  No men.  However, I did happen to run into Cheyenne Jackson, the former star of the recently closed All Shook Up, a few times in the hallway since he was there for the workshop of A Tale of Two Cities.  That was nice.  ;D

SUPERNATURAL came next on the agenda. Still up in the air about this one.

The first show was definitely creepy. The one last week and the one this week not so much. Also, they're making sure the main person in peril is a hot chick for one of the two brothers to get fixated on before they have to pull up stakes and leave. That has gotten old fast.

I guess I'll try one more week.

The best show of the night was LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT with one of the best plotted mysteries the show has ever done. And good news, it's a crossover episode with LAW & ORDER that concludes tomorrow night.

However, the episode tonight certainly stood on its on as a powerful drama with more twists and turns than a pretzel. Tomorrow's episode should be equally compelling. Can't wait!

I plan to tape "Supernatural" and "My Name Is Earl" and watch "Commander in Chief" tonight at 9:00 PDT.  After that, I'll watch "Boston Legal" and then maybe watch the two tapes.

As for the Topic of the Day, the programs that I have and will never sell are a couple of souvenier programs of The Manhattan Transfer, and the shows that I saw on Broadway, the one time that I went to New York:  Sunset Boulevard (signed by Betty and Alan Campbell), Victor/Victoria (not signed at all), and the Playbill for Swinging On a Star (they didn't have any souvenier stuff at all...it hadn't been open for very long).

Several years before that, friends of mine went to New York and saw Miss Saigon and got me a souvenier program and autographs.  I think (but can't remember if) they got me Liz Callaway's autograph. ;D

AOL is back and so am I after an entirely frustrating ten minutes.  My laptop performed two updates, one a security update.  Every time it does these stupid security updates, it does something to the airport wireless unit.  When you reboot, you get a thing that says something about changing all the commands in the link or something and I've learned to click yes, and that puts everything right.  Only the screen didn't come up when I rebooted.  Hence nothing worked at all.  BRILLIANT.  I finally rebooted again and this time the screen came up.  I will be calling Apple tomorrow to have a little discussion about this, since they told me months ago that that security screen thing would never happen again - just that one time.  Well, it's happened every single time there's a security update and it's nonsense, complete and utter nonsense.
