Well, you've read the notes, you know the routine, the routine knows you, and now it is time for you to post until the routine cows come home - they're out mooing "Sister Clodagh, Sister Clodagh."

And for those who need and/or desire a topic, what are your favorite one-of-a-kind films, those one-off films that you treasure.  I'll start with The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T - there has never been anything like it, before or since.

BLACK NARCISSUS is on TCM again this weekend and I think I will watch it again.  It won't be glorious to look at, but it will be interesting to see again.

One-of films.  Hmmmm.

5,000 Fingers to be sure.

The Red Shoes.

I watched "Carousel" for the first time on DVD and really enjoyed it. BUT, I have to admit that I’ve never known that Shirley Jones was a leading actress in it, and in addition, I didn’t entirely noticed THAT until I read the description on the back of the DVD package after the film. She was lovely and looked quite different from The Partridge’s mom. I could recognize her by only her eyes. ( I know she's still lovely in the photo from the Courts show which DR MBarnum posted before)

Sister Clodagh, Sister Clo.. I mean...

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...

Hmm... And just where is DR Ben?

And I'm guessing DR elmore will be back to be normal -well, at least back in New York City - tomorrow morning and posting before I'm even out of bed.

Hi, DR Michael S!  Hope you (and your back) is feeling better this morning.

Ask BK...

Have you ever wanted to see one of your musicals translated into another language?  If so, which show and which language/country (if you have a preference)?

And out of your current stock of OCRs in other languages, any favorites?

As you may know, the fall is the time the bears are getting ready for hiberantion.  For any one planning on going hiking in the woods to see the glorious colors (colours for you Canadians and Austrailians amongst us) of  the  changing leaves here is an important  safety reminder:

Quote
“When hiking in the woods wear noisy little bells to alert bears to your presence and carry pepper spray. Be on the lookout for bear tracks and feces. Black bear feces are small, contain lots of berries, and, occasionally, squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings are large, have little bells in it, and smell like pepper.”

Good morning, all!  The terminals at the public library are very slow this morning.

First of all, I need all your vibes for the trip back to Manhattan this afternoon; I've felt very strange about this whole trek over the past week, although my week has been quite wonderful.

I was pleased with the Miami University session yesterday:  I spoke to about 12 students in music or theatre and 3 faculty; the chairman of the dept introduced me and told the students a bit about my work, then I spoke for about 15 minutes on what I'd done - both the good and the bad - since I got my M.A.
The last hour was questions, and I wish now that I'd asked the students questions instead of their asking me.

DRMBarnum, since I know Brian D'Arcy James, I will go with you to the play.  You'll have an easier time meeting him if I can get us backstage.

Last night's THE AMAZING RACE thoughts:

I kind of liked last night's episode because it put the other races into a new perspective for me.  The fact that the teams were directed to drive from NYC to Washington's Crossing--not exactly a simple Sunday drive--gave me an appreciation of how former participants had to do similar drives in foreign lands (with a language barrier to boot.)  And I thought it was really cool that they were next directed to Belmont Plateau (home of the first Earth Day) here in Philly, mere walking distance from where I live.

Teamwise, except for a few obvious cases, they all pretty much blended into each other and were hard to tell apart.  Unlike DR JRrand, I didn't find the kiddies as bratty as I expected them to be (and I did expect them to be bratty after those intros!), but that could change as they begin to focus more on each family.  I guess the team I like the best so far is the three brothers and their sister--I liked their energy and enthusiasm.  But I'm not holding out much hope for them in the long run--they've already confessed that they have more brawn than brains and they sort of showed last night that their brawn runs to empty awfully fast.  As for the team I like the least--yeesh!--do I even have to say who they are?  What a despicable bunch!  Like I said yesterday--future Dr. Phil guests.

Here's a problem I think I'm going to have with this race being set in just America:  unlike in foreign countries, where there is a lot of varied types of public transportation, I see the contestant families spending a lot of time in SUVs driving from point to point.  The constant driving and the claustrophobic camera views inside the vehicles was the dullest part of the show last night, and I see a lot more of that coming up.  That is, if I stick with it.

Last night, DR Jrand wrote:  "DR MATTH I must have missed the post...what did you think of HOUSE AT THE END OF THE WORLD?"

I enjoyed A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD very much, and naturally fell deeply in love with Colin Farrell's character. When the movie ended, I was disapppinted because I wanted it to continue with the lives of the two guys. I know stories don't always tie plots up into neat little parcels, but I didn't think even gave a clue as to how it was going to continue, so it felt incomplete to me.

Next week will be another nightmare of DVD goodies to choose from for purchase. Argh!

I'm looking at

ABBOTT & COSTELLO - Collection 4

ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS - Season 1

Disney's CINDERELLA

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER - Complete series

VAL LEWTON Collection

And then there are lots of others like the Hitchcock box bk mentioned the other day, both FLYs, THE INTERPRETER.

Too many DVDs, not enough $$$$.  :(

Discussion about last night's AMAZING RACE (but no spoilers).

I actually really liked the family aspect of the race.  I'm surprised at how easy it was to get used to this new aspect.

But the part I thought didn't work, was staying in the US.  Don't they realize that the most interesting part of TAR is seeing new countries and learning about new cultures.  I'm not sure where they go (hopefully at least South America).  But if they continue in the US, i'm afraid that many viewers might be upset.

I don't think I have a favorite team yet.  But there are a few interesting ones.

So Dan which team did you hate?  The Jersey team with the loud mother and the two bratty teens?  I didn't care for them.  Or the team with the little girl.

I read previews that the KOLCHAK DVDs have not been remastered but are merely ports from the videotape masters and thus have faded colors and are not sharp. That's very disappointing.

Oh to me it is the MOST anticipated show of the season. I just can't believe that I will have to wait until Saturday to watch it. :(

Oh and from last night's TAR (WITH SPOILERS).

do not read if you haven't watched yet.

Did anybody else feel sick when that cart ran over the mother (the one whose husband had died being run over by a car). Wow.

I actually really liked that family.

From this list:
http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=3667

I was impressed with the sisters. And the widow and kids.

Not sure what I thought about the team with the little girl.  She sure outran those other adults/teens to the line (crazy!).  I thought I would find her cute from the promos.  BUt I think I find her rather obnoxious.

Did not like the Blacks.  The kids did nothing.  And building the house they just didn't seem like they were that competitive.

The brothers and sister seemed nice enough. I just wonder if they have the smarts to compete. IT was an interesting choice that they made not to follow the blacks (i'm sure they could have outran them). And i was happy they weren't eliminated.

Don't really know the rogers family yet.

I did like the father and daughters.  And the father and sons-in-law.

Did not like the obnoxious New York/New Jersey family.

A write-up in my local paper about tonight's premiere also included the identity of the murderer in the first season. That made me mad. Some people who did not watch the series last season are waiting for the VERONICA MARS DVDs which won't be out until the next month or so, and if they read that article, might feel like there is no reason to watch now. There are plenty of other mysteries, of course, but that still was thoughtless of that writer who didn't NEED to mention the denouement.

Are they from Jersey?  I thought they were from Brooklyn.  In any case, yes--them!  Ugh!  Unpleasantness to the Nth degree!  And most likely they were chosen as contestants for just that reason.  I pity their cameraman--I would hate to be stuck in the same room with these people, let alone a small space like the vehicles they used last night.

I didn't like the family with the little girl when they talked about themselves during the intros.  They came off like their family was the Incredibles.  But during the race I didn't think they were as annoying as I thought they would be.  The kids acted like kids and the parents were focused on the tasks on hand.  But like I said, my opinion might change as each team gets more and more camera time in each episode.

Oh wow that is thoughtless. I hate when people do that.

No, my paper made it seem so exciting. Referring to certain emotions and surprises that the viewers will feel.  And making a few little comments that made me wonder what they were talking about!

Although since most people here do not get UPN it's sort of weird that the show was included at all in their listings!

Thank goodness my sis has satellite cause I would never be able to wait till the dvd comes out (or till next summer when it is shown on Cdn tv).

I thought they were talking about jersey. But it says "new york" on their bios.

Yes the family with the little girl made themselves sound like the SuperFamily.  Oooh the little one can run a mile in 7 minutes.

I just didn't think the show worked with little kids.  They had to paddle across the river, and the kids were useless.  And it meant 2 less hands to build the house. But then again they were lighter in the buggy.

It just seemed to me that the little kids did not offer much and could not contribute. And of course they were all sleeping after 5 minutes!

I haven't thought about 45s in ages, but three that come to mind that have never had any other incarnations are:

Peter Nero playing Elmer Bernstein's theme from Summer and Smoke - a gorgeous version.

Stan Kenton playing David Amram's theme from Splendor In The Grass - not as good as Percy Faith, but pretty good nonetheless.

Hot Spell by Bacharach and David as performed by Ernie Felice.

Yeah, the thing about kids who are pre-puberty is that they need lots of sleep and their blood sugars go up and down like roller coasters and young teens fare only somewhat better.  If the tasks for the rest of the race are on the same level as past seasons, all the teams with young people are going to be wiped.

Wow- (that's Wow spelled backwards) it's a really slow day here.  I'm back to reading the posts.  It's been a busy few days it seems, so I'll try to catch up.

Tonight begins the final 5 performances of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and the sound issues are still the main problem.  I still have not heard the "Marriage Tango" in its complete form as the male actor's mic always does not work on that particular number.  Of course, the sound designer doesn't know how to troubleshoot is equipment, so this problem doesn't get resolved.  i waited for him after the Sunday matinee to tell him that he has two days to remedy this problem, but he knows I'm not happy with him and he avoided me at all costs until I had to bolt to the next gig that evening.  Just fix the damn problem, that's all.

I don't know about films that qualify as one-offs, but I actually found the years-later Avalon-Funicello revisit BACK TO THE BEACH to be so unusual in its look, style and pacing that I can say I'd never seen anything quite like it.  A surprisingly satisfying, though very odd, film.

Another odd film that I liked was the Israeli musical film KAZABLAN, which felt unlike any movie musical I'd seen, with one of the most unlikely musical heroes I've seen.

I have heard a rumor that it is possible to convert your region specific DVD player to play DVDs from all regions.

Does anyone know if this is true or just a lie to make gullible and techoignorant  people (like me) destroy their DVD players by fiddling withhe innards?

My question for bk - and any others who might like to chime in:  How would one go about developing a one-person performance (a la The Belle of Amherst) based on a literary figure?

As you may know, the fall is the time the bears are getting ready for hiberantion.  For any one planning on going hiking in the woods to see the glorious colors (colours for you Canadians and Austrailians amongst us) of  the  changing leaves here is an important  safety reminder:

We returned home to find a very large bear had been feasting on our fruit trees.  We aren't sure how it got in but know where it pushed its way out through the fence.  We know it was a very large bear by the elephant sized bear scat.

Sounds like some nifty 45's there, MR BK.

First time I heard the music from Lil Abner were some old 45's that my aunt gave me - including If I Had My Druthers and Namely You.  Although I really liked Johnny Mathis' Broadway songbook with Abner songs and Gypsy songs and songs from Flower Drum Song.

Hmmmm....wonder if that's on CD?

Elmore welcome back.  Just before I left for our trip I saw this really cute shirt.  It was slightly pricey so I hesitated to buy it, especially since I wasn’t sure it would be warm enough in Romania for me to wear it.  I couldn’t resist the top since the clothing line is called “wheres larry”.   I owe you a moment of gratitude.  It was hot in Munich and very warm during most of our stay in Romania and I was thankful to have the top with me.

DR MBARNUM the only "scary" movie my Dollar Store had was House on Haunted Hill/The Bat which I already have.  Some new cartoons but no other new live action DVD's.  They must keep all the good ones in Oregon.

I always have to ask where their DVDs are at. They tend to keep them in strange places...often a box of them will be sitting on the counter at one of the checkstands, or over by the candies.

Depends what you mean by developing.  You start by doing all the research and making voluminous notes, then organizing them into some sort of cohesion - then you must come up with a dramatic structure for the piece that will hold the audience's attention for a couple of hours, tell the story in a dramatic and interesting way, and have the proper builds and climaxes.

There is a website that will give you the codes you punch into your remote to turn your player in an all region machine (no need to open it up at all). They don't have codes for every player, but you can do a search to see if they have your machine.

Sorry to say, I don't remember the addy for the website or even the name, but a google search should turn up some possibilities.

Then, I switched the DVR over to last night's broadcast of HOUSE. I liked the episode, but I did think the surgery they showed was a little more than I wanted to watch in graphic detail. I'm sure the producers would say they showed restraint and didn't show all they could, but they certainly showed more than enough for me. I had to look away a couple of times.

I haven't decided who my favorites are yet. No one totally grabbed me, but then I usually have to watch a few episodes before I get into it.

I'm not especially fond of the family thing yet, but I thought the challenges were just as difficult as they were with 2 people. If they don't dumb down what they have to do, then it could still be ok.  I liked going around the world better, but there is supposed to be a lot of historical stuff this season, that could be interesting.

I'm going to give it a chance. We'll see.

"Him" was in the top 10. I know it hit #8 at one time, but not sure if it went any higher.   Of course if you consider writing and not just performing, he's had more hits than that.

Yesterday Jose posted Danise, the Vixter & I plan to "do" Central Park on Tuesday the 4th.  It would be wonderful to have you join us.

Please do join us, Jose.  :)  Everyone is welcome!

I have some odd ideas about what I want to see in and around the park--World Food for one thing.  Don't ask me why but I like to walk through another places grocery store just see what they offer.

Also there is a bridge someplace in there that I've seen in a number of movies and even on OLTL when Star was in NYC.  I'd just like to see it for myself.

I Tivoed Commander in Cheif last night so I have yet to see it.  It sounded good from the commercials.

I got this from the Des Moines Civic Center today

"The Civic Center has just learned that the national tour of Doctor Dolittle is closing on Sunday, October 2.

As a result, the Civic Center will NOT be presenting Doctor Dolittle, as scheduled, October 18 – 23, 2005.

At this point in time, it is possible that Doctor Dolittle may be re-booked for a later date. If not, the Civic Center will replace this show in the Betts Broadway Series with a different production.

If we cannot find a suitable replacement, we will refund the Doctor Dolittle portion of your season ticket package or your purchase of single tickets.

We will send information to you as it becomes available.

We are sorry for the inconvenience, and we look forward to seeing you all at Cats and Little Shop of Horrors later this fall.

Thank you. "

Pippin is a schnoodle - schnauzer/poodle mix.  Chocolate brown.  He is twelve weeks old.  He belonged to my brother Kent and his girlfriend, but didn't fit in with the two other dogs in the family, so he has come to live with us.  He is about half grown and will be about 12 lbs when he is an adult.

He is running everywhere and jumping up and down checking out everything, so he should have some good sleep time tonight.

DR RLP we must know about the WHITE CHRISTMAS souvenirs.  I am especially interested in the staging of "The Best Things Happen When You Dance", "Mandy", and "Choreography."  My favorite moments in the movie.

Ah yes, the electronic world we live in today with VCRs and DVDs.  Just think if all those poor people who went to England's Globe Theatre had been forced to go to their graves without ever being allowed to whisper aloud, "Hamlet dies!"

I have heard a rumor that it is possible to convert your region specific DVD player to play DVDs from all regions.

Does anyone know if this is true or just a lie to make gullible and techoignorant  people (like me) destroy their DVD players by fiddling withhe innards?
There should be a code to be able to do this. Our retailers would just provide the code I think. Manufacturers/importers in the USA have conned the USA public. I suspect most players are imported and indeed would have this code! Even Cheap DVD players here (about $50 USA) are multizone.

Ron and Dan-LOL

Ron I was out doing errands, including a trip to See’s candy.  I’m sending peanut brittle to Craig, chocolates for his girlfriend, and more peanut brittle for his girlfriend’s mother.  That will just be a portion of their care package.

I will have to leave again and let Keith have the computer.  Maybe I can find a spot to use the laptop.  I’m not sure where.  Most the time now I have to eat standing since the only table is outside.

Thank you, DRDanise!  Yes, the bitch is back, and a pleasant return trek it was.

DRJason, I am so sorry about your grandmother.  My maternal grandmother died in 1962 and there has not been a day in the past 43 years that I haven't missed her.

DRMBarnum, Saturday's fine with me.  Perhaps other dear readers might like to go as well?

You do have a long way to come, DR Jane.  But I am thrilled that you are coming and that you were able to get into same hotel as the rest of us.

Which reminds me, I agree with what you said to DR Jose about the suite.  It would have been nice but since we're all coming and going at different times, it would not have worked.

I was talking to someone at work about the hotel and it occured to me that it's a shame that when you book a hotel room you can't pick it like do a plane seat.  Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could see what rooms were available in the hotel on the dates you were going be there that were in your price range.

It wouldn't be 100% for sure that you would get the room--like I was bumped out of my seat on one of the flights to SLC but at least you could maybe pick the one you want and a back up if choice #1 wasn't available.

Humm, now that I think about that, maybe give you three picks so you would be sure to get one of them.   Just a thought.

DR Elmore, what did you mean when you said you wished you had asked the students questions instead of them asking you?

Didn't they ask good questions?

The students were great, but the questions, though good, were mostly things like "Have you ever written a part where you had to rewrite it in the studio because the player couldn't play it?"  I would have asked the stiudents questions like, "Claire, what do you want to do after college?"  I'd take her answer, and try to riff on it from my own experiences.

My answer to the question I was asked was that most players I know (with one exception BK knows better than I) can play mostly anything, but that I often rewrote things I had written badly or that I thought were wrong for the final mood of the number, that thinking fast on my feet in the studio was one of my assets.

DR JRand cute puppy!

DR Cillaliz re: learning historical stuff on TAR vs going around the world.  Maybe it's just me.  But I don't really want to see them doing historical stuff.  That isn't the essence of what TAR is about.

I checked the list of places they went.  And there are at least three places in Canada.  As well as places like Panama and Belize.

Btw, did you notice that the clues were quite vague (which i think is good).

"Answering Machine" also made the top 40.
He also made the top 40 with "Jennifer Tomkins" as lead singer for Street People.

He also wrote the Buoys "Timothy" and the Jets hit "You Got it All" later done by Britney Spears

I was looking at my Annette LP's (no zurds among them) and noticed something for the first time.

BABES IN TOYLAND is called an Original Cast Album NOT a soundtrack album, and on the back there is a small sentence that reads:  This soundtrack was recreated in the Sunset Studios by the Original Cast.  Would it be easier and less expensive to re-record the score - or at least the vocals rather than transfer the soundtrack masters?

Why would Disney/Vista do such a thing?

I now have my laptop set up.  I’m a bit uncomfortable but it isn’t too bad.

While driving home this afternoon I noticed smoke in the mountains.  When I turned down the road to our street a sheriff’s car with flashing lights was partially blocking the road.  The sheriff was only letting locals through.  There is a grass fire at the top of the old scenic drive to the I-5 and California.  I’m not concerned by, it just felt strange to be stopped and questioned before driving home.

Goodnight.

What the HELL is going on?  I go out to get a little something to eat.  Eight o'clock, not exactly rush hour.  First I stop at two bookstores to buy a book, which neither has.  Then I decide to go to Koo Koo Roo's, but only because the traffic on Laurel Canyon going to Gelson's is HORRENDOUS.  Why?  Eight-ten and the traffic is horrendous in an area that has no businesses.  Why?

Then I go to Koo Koo Roo's - the parking lot, which is HUGE and services some restaurants and a market and stuff, is packed.  Eight-fifteen and it's packed when it is NEVER packed at that time.  I find a space and go into Koo Koo Roo's.  There are fifteen people waiting in line.  At eight-twenty.  Why?  Normally at eight-twenty it is a ghost town in Koo Koo Roo's, since they close at nine.  I then went to Gelson's, taking another route.  Even Gelson's had double the people they normally have.  Why?  What the HELL is going on?  And I'm afraid it's the stocks for dear readers Jed and Ann.

I spent the early part of the evening re-watching H IS FOR HITCHCOCK. I saw it six or eight months ago and didn't mean to watch the whole thing but I got engrossed in it and just couldn't shut it off.

I had recorded it off TV some time ago. Is it a special feature on one of the Universal DVDs of a Hitchcock film? It should be if it isn't.

The auditions today started off on a very high note.  In fact, I got a little star struck right off the bat.  The first person we saw today was Christianne Noll.  She had just come up from DC where's she's currently appearing in the season opener for The Washington National Opera.

Well... It took me a few measures to get her first song under my fingers, but I believed I recovered well enough by the time we started her second song.  In any case, it was a great way to start the day, and we had nary a dip in the quality of people that came in throughout the morning and afternoon.

We finished around 6:30.  A long day, but a very good one.

After the auditions, I headed down to the Village to meet up with my friend for dinner.  We headed over to Brothers BBQ (I think that was the name of the place).  Very good.  And since the weather was cool, they had all the front doors and windows open.  A very nice evening all around.

...And I believe we'll be getting together for dinner again this Saturday.   Hmm... Could become a trend...

;)

DR elmore - Glad to know you made it back home to NYC safe and sound - if not as sane when you left a couple of days ago.

And I think I'm going to call it a night...  This WUSSBURGER WITH EXTRA CHEESE needs his sleep.

Goodnight.

But as all of you Gods are my witness, I will be an HHW God by the time of the HHW dinner on Oct. 5th.

FJL can do it, yes he can!
If he can't do it, no one can!!

But he can!  He can!! ;D

Well, it's Wussburger time for me. ::) In the morning, we have a meeting at work that starts at 9:30 a.m.  I usually don't get to work until 10:00, so it's got to be an early morning...I don't like to get up early.  Pity me. ;)

Yup, I believe it's bedtime around here, too.
