Well, you've read the notes, you've fixated on the notes, the notes have fixated on you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just bidin' time, 'cause that's the kind of cows - oops, need a rhyme.

I detect a trend here:  DR elmore at Miami University, bk at the high school career night, and this morning I'm off to the University of Dayton to talk to a proposal writing class about grants research resources.

Be back at lunchtime...

The morning crew is back together. Goodnight Sweet Tom, may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Good Morning Sweet Larry. The busy week is about to begin and you'll barely have time to recoup before a certain man from Oregon arrives.

We are still attending Mildred Pierce this evening at Chelsea Cinemas, meeting at 6:30 in front of the theatre. Any NY Hainsies wishing to attend, you know what I look like so fee free to drop by and look for me (with Anthony) and Jason (although he doesn't look like his avatar, if he did I would be afraid, very afraid).

Topic of the day:

AMOUR (Broadway version, didn't see it at Goodpeed) - I assume there are plenty of musicals in France that are like AMOUR, but while I didn't think it was high quality 100% of the way through, it was unlike anything I'd actually seen, and I cherished the experience

BELLE EPOQUE at Lincoln Center Theater - Possibly unusual for the sake of being unusual, but I loved it.

CROWNS at Second Stage - A beautiful, inspiring concept musical about, of all things, different hats that people wear at different times in their lives.  To me, it was just as breathtaking as I imagine CHORUS LINE must have been to those who discovered that show before it became "the thing to see" -  unfortunately, CROWNS didn't move after Second Stage, but it seems to be done around the country quite a lot.

MOVIN' OUT - I know some people think it's just a standard ballet, but to me it was unique and one-of-a-kind.  Twyla Tharp is trying to make lightning strike twice, but until she does, I count MOVIN' OUT on my list of one-offs.

I know I'll be called a shill (oh wait, that's a different chat board where they do that, not here :) ), but I must add HERRINGBONE (which Skip wrote with Tom Cone and Ellen Fitzhugh) to the list of one-off, one-of-a-kind shows.  The one-off-ness of HERRINGBONE also makes it one that is not produced nearly as often as people seem to think it's produced.  I won't comment on the quality of the music since that would be too shilly, but it is unique, to say the least.  And a joy to watch when it's done well.

If I may add a Vegas show, I don't think I've ever seen anything like "O" - but I don't know if that counts as part of the topic of the day since it's not a play, musical or concert.

RE: "Mildred Pierce" - I don't think I'll be able to make it tonight.  We'll be going right until 6:30 - which means we'll be going until 7:00.   However, if by chance I can make it, I'll give DR Jason a call on his cell.  Otherwise, Enjoy!

BK - RE: your mention of the weather this week in LA - the "return" of summer.  I remember last year at this time, the same thing happened.  I remember having lunch with a friend in the Valley the closing week of What If - and watching the temperature sign on the bank across the street from the restaurant creeping up from 90 to 91 to 92 to... 96! throughout the afternoon.

Another trend?  Hmm...

Mornin', everyone...

No news from the family so far. No news is good news, I suppose.

I will, indeed, be joining DR Ben and DP Ant to see "Mildred Pierce" tonight. At first I thought it might be unseemly to do so, considering the circumstances with my grandmother, but I'd rather have the distraction than sit at home and worry. And the good company is always a plus, too.

Carrot-Stick girl is out of the office today. Thank God for small miracles. Problem is, one of our other reps from my region is out sick today, too. And the third one is leaving at 3:30, leaving me as the only rep in the southern region for the last 2 hours of the day. That means I'll be handling business for approximately half of the country.  Oh, rapture. I wonder what they'd do if I got "the call" from my dad and had to leave...

Show's I've seen that have been like no other....? Hmm...

I agree with FJL - AMOUR was unlike anything I'd seen or heard onstage before. I absolutely loved it.

THE LION KING is a very unique piece of theatre. I've never seen anything like CATS, either (that doesn't mean I liked it - I've just never seen anything like it). SLAVA'S SNOWSHOW, which is currently running off-Broadway, was stunning and I highly recommend it, unless you're afraid of clowns or confetti. Again, like nothing I've ever seen before. As cliche as it sounds, RENT is a unique theatrical experience, and I'd never seen dancing forks until I saw BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

When I opened my browser this morning this story popped up

Quote
Australians do ‘patriotic duty’: Birthrate up
Rate rises after official urges citizens to have ‘one for your country’

Updated: 3:36 a.m. ET Sept. 28, 2005
CANBERRA, Australia - Treasurer Peter Costello urged Australians to “do their patriotic duty” and have more children but it seems they were doing it anyway, just for fun. A new study shows the birthrate hitting its highest level in seven years.

A study by Australian National University demographer Peter McDonald showed the country’s birthrate at 1.77 per woman in 2004, its highest level since 1997. McDonald believes the rate will stay around 1.8 for the next 5-10 years.

“We’ve been calling for policies to support work and family for several years, and also there’s been a great deal of discussion about, ‘if you wait too long, there’s a chance that you won’t have the baby’,” McDonald said.

“That kind of public discussion has been pretty prominent and I think that has had its effect,” he said. During a budget speech in May last year, Costello urged Australians to have more children, telling couples to “have one for your husband, one for your wife and one for your country.”

Costello’s comments came as this country of 20.3 million people struggles to deal with an aging population. The government’s Productivity Commission has forecast that one in four Australians will be aged over 65 by 2045.

I have not been big on collecting movie musical soundtrack CDs. I usually prefer to watch and listen to the movie on DVD,laserdisc, or tape, but after enjoying the soundtrack to KISMET so much, I've decided to buy a few of the movie musical soundtracks that I really love.

To that end, yesterday I bought IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER. I'm hoping the tracks will be in stereo since it was recorded that way and is that way on the laserdisc I have from the Gene Kelly Collection laserdisc set.

And I also bought LOVELY TO LOOK AT. Not that it's one of my favorite movie musicals, but I certainly do love the ROBERTA score.

I'm so far behind on the posting... :-\

Yesterday, my day off, was filled with der Brucer and I running around Sussex County taking pictures again.  First we went over to the SPCA, where we took pictures of Pepper, a brindle Aussie mix who was friendly but had releaving his bowels as his first priority.  Can't say that I blame him.  Then we took pictures of Sam, a yellow Lab, who wasn't quite as friendly, somewhat shy and stand-offish.  Marlon, the sorta-cute attendant who usually helps us refused to handle Sam; apparently they don't get along.

While there, Marlon was busy enough working with a new arrival named Jake.  Jake is a nine-foot-long Burmese boa constrictor, and very handsome, if you like snakes.  He'll probably find a home at one of the local zoos, a much better bet than being taken in by some amateur who doesn't know how to handle snakes.  Der Brucer was fascinated.

After that, we drove south to visit a man who is apparently losing his home for reasons he didn't explain.  At least he's got his priorities in order: he is trying to find new homes for Beau, a handsome chocolate Lab, and Beau's son, Rocky, an equally handsome chocolate Lab/Pit Bull mix, about twelve weeks old.  (Rocky's mother was also there, and she is definately of the loving Pit type, covering der Brucer with kisses.)  Placing Beau should be easy, as there's a Lab rescue group nearby.  Finding a home for Rocky will be harder, since the Lab rescue group isn't much interested in mixed breed dogs.

Then we returned home, where our own pack insisted that it was time for us to nap and cuddle.

A comment re: last night's LOST (no show spoilers just discussing how the show was done, but you still might not want to read it if you haven't watched the show yet).

It was interesting how they went back and filled in the gaps from last week.  I don't think they've ever done a show that way before. I suppose there was just too much last week to go into detail.  But I almost wish that they had just made it a two-parter and shown us everything at once.

I know most of us are smart.  But I can't help but think some people must have been confused, since they were reshowing some stuff without really explaining that they were reshowing stuff.  It was nice though to get the gaps filled in (since i truly thought we were not going to get more details about what we saw last week).

Well, these students are going to have to get interested in FD and other grantseeking resources, because they've been put in small groups and each group has been paired with a real nonprofit organization.  The groups are to write a real proposal to a real potential funder for a real program/project.  After I get back from NY/Atlanta, the groups are to meet with me for targeted consultations and on Nov. 22, I'll go back to the class to hear the group presentations.

Jennifer, part of Lost's appeal (for me) is that it can show so many different points of view.  How they managed to do that over the last two eps just shows how good the writing is.

And with that, I have to get going for work.  Laters.

I think this is one of the reasons LOST ranks so high both with viewers and with critics. It does not talk down to the audience or assume folks have to be provided every scrap of information in every episode. The writers are taking their time giving us the entire picture.

spoilers --

And, not only were were filled in on the blanks from last week's "hatch" plot, but we also got blanks filled in about the sad story of Michael and Walt that we had gotten some details about last season. But now we saw how Michael had tried to block Walt's mother from taking him out of the country and how they eventually avoided going to court.

Superb writing and superb construction of episode arcs and backstories.

Oy! Tonight is one crowded night on the TV schedules.

Not only are ALIAS and SMALLVILLE starting their seasons, but also it's the series premiere of the update to NIGHT STALKER (opposite CSI). And I'm still into REUNION also at 9 so another juggling scenario for me.

And tonight is the LIVE episode of WILL & GRACE which I must watch. (and for West Coasters, they're doing the entire episode again LIVE at 8:30 p.m. your time as well.)

For those who like SCRUBS and don't like THE OFFICE, I read that NBC is planning on SCRUBS rejoining the schedule in October, and I'm guessing it's going into the timeslot now occupied by THE OFFICE (Tuesday at 9:30) while it goes on the shelf. I'm thinking that whichever show scores better ratings coming after MY NAME IS EARL, that's the show that will play out the rest of the season. The other one will more than likely be canceled.

Adding to my list of one-of-a-kind shows, I'd have to say that THE KENTUCKY CYCLE, while uneven in quality, was highly unusual.  Spending the full day immersed in a theatrical event can be very exciting (NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and ANGELS IN AMERICA come to mind as examples of where you could see both parts in one day), but KENTUCKY CYCLE just had a peculiar magic to it, that it held together as a toatl event without being one long two-part story, and yet felt like a full experience.

Also, the main advertising-guy section of CONTACT.  I've never seen anything like that as well.

At the engagement party I went to on Sunday, they had a flowing chocolate fondue fountain.  So just about everything you could imagine (dessert-wise, that is) was being eaten on a stick with chocolate coating.

No hot dogs or tofu on a stick, though.

Dear Jane

Be careful out there with that bear roamingabout.  Do you ghave your bells on?  Are you carrying pepper spray?

No and no  ;D but then I'm not walking alone in the woods, yet.  I usually do that in the winter after it snows.  Honestly I have never done it alone, always with Echo-so I'm not sure what I will do this winter.  As for walking in the woods I do that with a friend and we talk the entire time which must be louder than bells chiming.

Nice review, MR BK!

Hmmm....

Judy Garland in concert in 1966 - I think I have the same souvenir book you have DR MATTH...with an Orange Cover.

4 GIRLS 4 with Rosemary Clooney, Margaret Whiting, Rose Marie, and Helen O'Connell.  They were all great and very funny.

LOS DIAVOLOS - an Italian dance-acrobatic troup.

AIDA - the musical by DR JOSE's boss Sir Elton John.  Didn't know the score didn't know anything about it....but I liked it a LOT!

They had that at a wedding we attended  last year.  The kids that were there  were standing around with their eyes opened so wide that you think they could never close them again.

I will, indeed, be joining DR Ben and DP Ant to see "Mildred Pierce" tonight. At first I thought it might be unseemly to do so, considering the circumstances with my grandmother, but I'd rather have the distraction than sit at home and worry. And the good company is always a plus, too.

I am glad you are going DR Jason, I agree that it will be a good way to get your mind away from other things...and it is one heck of a good movie. I will be very curious to hear what you think of it!!

Here it is noon already and I am still in my bathrobe. I spent a good part of the morning doing a telephonic interview with actor Rex Reason (brother of Rhodes). What a delight it was! I have been a fan of Rex Reason's since I was a small child seeing him in CREATURE WALKS AMONG US and RAW EDGE...and what a handsome guy...he still looks good in fact (he was at the Ray Court show in July).

PS: JRanb55, he did remember Allison!

A golf shot not tallied against the score, granted in informal play after a poor shot especially from the tee.

I also finished Garbo's CONQUEST. She gives a beautiful performance, and had not CAMILLE premiered the same year, she surely would have been Oscar nominated for this work.

Charles Boyer was nominated playing Napoleon in this film, and he does give a very fine performance.

Of course, Alan Marshal provided nice eye candy as Napoleon's bodyguard. As beautiful as he was and with that lilting English accent, I'm surprised he didn't have a bigger career.

Would someone be willing/able to record (on SP) the East Coast broadcast of "Will and Grace" for me...actually, it's for my niece.  She loves the show and had taped every episode (and keeps them until the DVDs are released).  She (and I, I admit) would like to compare both versions.  I'll be happy to swap.  I'd be happy to send a tape (taped on SP) of the West Coast broadcast.

Any takers??

I could eat whatever ai wanted never gain weight....well at at the age of 30 my thyrpoid grew a lovely little tumor so the surgeon took haldf of it out,  and the other half that was left promptly stopped working.  I went fporm a size 3 to a  size 18 in six months.  The problem is I have a "skinny" body self image.  I am constantly  shocked when I see myself in the mirroror  attempt to buy clothes

What's it against?

I'll try but I won't promise if the vixdad is home I lose all control of the remote

I was a skinny kid, too, but when I hit high school, parts of my body started growing out of proportion - and not the parts that I WANTED to grow out of proportion, either. My calves, thighs and forearms are really big. No, REALLY big. I grew up being called Popeye. When I hit grad school I had to take ballet and jazz, which trimmed me up and toned me, but since moving to NY, I've been eating what I can afford (usually fast food) and haven't been able to afford dance classes, so I'm out of shape and I've got a layer of fat around my middle that's awfully stubborn.

I shall shortly be on my way to John Marshall High School for Career Night.  I have no clew what I'll be doing, since I don't represent a college or anything, but I shall endeavor to impart words of wisdom such as, "What is it, fish" and other such bon mots.   At the very least, perhaps I'll recruit a young'un or two to join us on this here site.

Good Evening!

Two comments about today's auditions:

1)  I work with some amazingly talented, generous and caring people.

2) The "depth" we had in our choices for Gloria, Meg and Lola was truly "deep" - and fortunate.  After all was said and done, even if our first choice for each role happens to turn down the offer, we will still have a wonderful, and ideal cast.   And we'll still have a great cast if for some strange reason we have to go to our third choice.  The quality - and competition - was that good.

:)

I had to pass on seeing "Mildred Pierce" tonight with DRs Jason, Ben and Ant.  After being "in session" all day, I just needed a nice quiet evening at home.  And that's what I'm doing.  -Just catching up on last night's TV viewing courtesy of the DVR - "So You Think You Can Dance?" and "Lost".

-Oh, and I may have to borrow someone's tape of "Will and Grace" tonight too.  ;)

DR Jose - On the one hand, it's wonderful that the cjoices among actors are so strong for your show.

But there's a part of me that thinks about how sad that there are so many people who are so talented yet so right for the part that using them wouldn't be settling, and yet those talented people are not getting a job, and may just be totally without work.  And will feel the pain of rejection.

Sorry to be a downer.  So many of our friends and neighbors are actors, so I just felt a pang of sadness from reading your post.

Speaking of WILL & GRACE, it was average in the funny department, but there were a few good lines.

Eric McCormack and Megan Mullally, both consummate theater professionals, never dropped character once in the East Coast version. Sean Hayes and Debra Messing had a very hard time getting through their scene together without breaking up.

The show was bleeped twice in the East Coast version!

Back from another gorge-fest with BK at BIRDS, our new hot "In" place.  We wolfed down a mountain of onion rings and tore at chicken carcasses with the wild abandon of Charles Laughton in Henry the VIII.  Afterwards, we made our way through the smoke-clouded skies of LA...there's apparently a fire in the Burbank Hills or something...up the street to Counterpoint Records and Books where BK bought a dirty record with which I will let him regale you.

I watched the series premiere of NIGHT STALKER. There were some moments of eerieness in the show, but the story sort of lost momentum for me and at the most climactic moment became a flurry of bouncy camerawork, screams, and bad lighting so nothing really could be seen (or experienced). I wasn't totally disappointed by the show, but it has a ways to go in the next two episodes to win me over.

One neat little touch was that original Kolchak Darren McGavin was CGIed into the newsroom as Stuart Townsend (the new Kolchak) walked by him.

And finally, WITHOUT A TRACE completed the story began as last season's cliffhanger. Good episode, but the entire modus operandi of the show (searching for missing persons) was abandoned as the FBI agents went on a manhunt for a terrorist who had shot one of their own.

And speaking of THE OFFICE, NBC has ordered enough episodes to carry it to midseason, so my surmising this morning about what might possibly happen to the show must undoubtedly be wrong. Looks like it's going to run at least to January.

Still wonder where SCRUBS will land. NBC has a two hour Wednesday dead block with Martha Stewart's APPRENTICE and E-RING, and I guess it's possible they could stick SCRUBS into one of those slots along with possibly moving JOEY (which is just sinking fast on Thursdays) and then THE BOOK OF DANIEL which they've got waiting for midseason.

MADAME X
IMITATION OF LIFE (Lana Turner)
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE
THE TOWERING INFERNO
EARTHQUAKE
AIRPLANE!
THE PRODUCERS
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
JAWS
XANADU (silly, I know...)

That's all I can remember for now. Any other suggestions would be welcome - I can email them in at any time.

You Ought To See Her Box
Mama's Well Has Done Gone Dry
Where Can I Find A Cherry For My Banana Split?
It Was Hard When I Kissed Her Goodbye
Meat Man Pete
and many others.

Several of the songs are by the great Andy Razaf.

That is a great cover. I'm jealous.

Me, I just got back from my second night in a row at City Center's FALL FOR DANCE series. Dance troupes from all over the globe perform in it. It's a really good way to see dance because the things you don't like don't last that long and its on to the next... It's going on until Sunday. None of the performances were bad, some were incredible.

I did the program which was mentioned in the NY TIMES today. Something like, "This dance is about six soldiers walking through the gates of Heaven ACCORDING TO THE PROGRAM."  (emphasis is mine)
