Well, you've read the notes, you've contemplated Sheman Hemsley, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're also contemplating Sheman Hemsley and frankly they're confused cows right now.

According to my one-of-a-kind wonderful calendar from a NW publishing house, it is twenty years today since Rock Hudson left us.

My favourite Hudson film is probably "Written On the Wind".

When you go to the IMDb listing, you can click on a link to some quotes from the movie.  The very first one would have been perfect for yesterday's Topic of the Day.  The character of "Red Will" Danaher says, He'll regret it till his dying day, if ever he lives that long.

John Wayne NOT.

for those too young to know about John Wayne in The Conquerer. It is not a very good film with Wayne in Oriental make up. It has become better known for a couple of things.

1)

Filmed near the site of contemporaneous nuclear testing grounds, the set was contaminated by nuclear fallout. After location shooting, much dirt from the location was transported back to Hollywood in order to match interior shooting done there. Scores of cast and crew members developed forms of cancer over the next two decades, many more than the normal percentage of a random group of this size. Quite a few died from cancer or cancer-related problems, including John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendáriz (who shot himself to death soon after learning he had terminal cancer), Agnes Moorehead, Thomas Gomez, and director Dick Powell,

2)

Eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes provided the financial backing for this film and later paid an extra $12 million (estimated) for every existing print of it from a sense of guilt - it was he who paid for the shipping of 60 tons of radioactive dirt to Hollywood for retakes (see above). He kept a jealous hold on the film, not even allowing it to be seen on television, for 17 years until 1974, when Paramount managed to secure the rights to reissue it.

I'm up, I'm up!  I didn't think I would be awake so early but I guess that nap I had yesterday did the trick!

There is construction going on outside but it itsn't bothering me a bit.  When I'm tired, I sleep.  Shoot a canon off if you want to but it won't matter to me!

I meant to mention the fireworks I saw last night.  I don't know what was going on but they were quite lovely.  I saw then as I was walking about.

Nose is being quite a pain this morning.  I can't seem to stop sneezing.  I don't know why.  It started on the plane when it was starting to make a landing and has been acting up ever since.

I might have to find a drug store and get some kind of Sudiffed or something to stop it from wanting to run away.  Other then that, I feel GREAT and am very much looking forward to seeing one of my all time favorite guys with one of my all time favorite guys.   :)

Jose, I'm not 100% sure what happened to that poor lady.  I think it was a light in the ring that fell.  It was something heavy because I head it fall and when they took her out, they had her head all wrapped up.

And BTW I am in the Royal of Mount in Canada for the next few days. (Montreal) and I lay down for a while when I got home from the airport and woke up with the worse back spasm I ever had so bad was the pain that I thought I was going to lose my lunch (if I had a lunch to lose) I thought my back was getting better. Well back to another round of doctors. I hate it!

Oh and I finely figured out how to get this internet to work.  I moved the laptop to the nightstand by the bed and here I am!  Very low signal and I had a heck of time signing onto the board (don't honestly know if it was because the board was slow--I always do have a problem in the early morning even at home or this internet) but I finely made it.

I am so sorry to hear about your back, DR Michael.  I have never had a back problem (and hope I never do) but I have lived with one through my Mother for the last twenty or so years.  Ever since she crushed three or more disk in her back.

She is in horrible pain almost every day and can't lift a thing.  It's getting to the point where even a glass of tea is to much for her.  We had to switch to plastic glasses and only half filled at a time.

Well, I need to shower and go down and check out the free breakfast.

I really do like this hotel.  Very nice staff and a lovely room.  Thank you, DR Ginny for suggesting it.  I looked out the window last night to the Muse and thought about the room I had there and thought, "Eh--it was nice but this is much better in  lots of ways."   :)

Lovey pictures, BTW, BK!  I'm glad DR Hiskasa is having a nice time.  Wow, TWO HHW gatherings at one time!  What's next?

Wonderful photos of Hisaka's Los Angeles adventure. She has a nice bunch of people showing her around the town...and she looks lovely as ever!

My first day in New York was a blast!

JosePiano and I took a trek to the giant Takashimiya department store and then had tea and snacks in the basement dining area. He introduced me to the subway system and showed me sights around the area including Times Square. It was all very wonderful!

Afterwards Elmore, Josepiano, TPunk, Rodzinski, Danise and I all met up at a great diner called Artie's where I sampled my first taste of Matzoh Ball soup which was quite yummilicious  ;D   and I got Rodzinski to try the sweet and sour tongue! He was quite brave.

It has been so much fun to meet everybody! Larry is a wonderful host, Jose is a sweetheart and he will make a most excellent tour guide for us!! Danise is also a sweetheart and cute as a bug. TPunk is absolutely one beautiful gal inside and out, and Rodzinski is just one heck of a nice guy who I really enjoy chatting with about obscure things

PAVILION was an enjoyable play...not great...but pretty good...I think I liked it more then Elmore did. And yes, JRand55, I did get to meet Brian Kelly's nephew, and star of the play, Brian D'Arcy James. He was quite touched that I was such a fan of his uncle's. He thinks the world of Brian Kelly and was even named after him. He also has the most beautiful eyes and is quite a looker and a nice guy! Meeting him was quite a highlight for me.

Info for DR George, also in the cast of PAVILION was Stephen Bogardus, who I see is he other singer on your Melissa Manchester CD that you posted about last night! DR Elmore knows him, but we did not get to meet him. We did see actor Josh Stamberg who as been in MONK, SIX FEET UNDER, CSI, and several other shows. He looks a lot like Chris Meloni.

Good morning, all!  DRMBarnum is even more insane in person.  He won't do any of the things I request:
    1.  See the view from the roof
    2.  Climb onto the subway tracks
    3.  Take an extension cord into the shower
    4.  Taste the Raid to see if it's still fresh

Otherwise, I'm having a fabulous time, just not $3,000,000 worth.

As an actor, there's not much range to John Wayne, BUT as a MOVIE STAR, well, there he had charisma, photogeneticness and presence.  I suppose that many DRs feel about Mr. Wayne as I feel about Ms. Kidman and Ms. Roberts and Mr. Reeves.
If you've only tuned into a John Wayne movie on television, you can't recapture the magic that made him a bigger than life movie star.

That said, on to the TOD:
RED RIVER - I'm sure he knew more about the gay subtext than Mr. Heston did when lensing BEN-HUR.
THE QUIET MAN - Wayne met his match in Ms. O'Hara.
TRUE GRIT - didn't want to like this, but, in spite of Mr. Campbell, it works and Kim Darby works well with Wayne's Rooster.
HATARI! - Wayne proves he can do quick-talking comedy and not be totally upstaged by the animals or Elsa Martinelli.
STAGECOACH -  Wayne IS The Ringo Kid every bit as much as Gene Wilder was The Waco Kid in BLAZING SADDLES.
THE SHOOTIST - a fitting finale to a long-lasting career.
LEGEND OF THE LOST - it shouldn't work, but it does.
SANDS OF IWO JIMA
THE WERE EXPENDABLE
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE
HONDO - and I remember the first 3D tv showing, sponsored by 7-11 stores.
and those wonderful westerns for Howard Hawks still hold up!

Worst Wayne appearance, even more than THE CONQUEROR:
"Surely this man was the Son of God" in THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD.
Title: Re:SHEMAN HEMSLEY
Post by: FJL on October 02, 2005, 06:56:48 AM
TOD:  The only John Wayne film I saw on the big screen was THE SHOOTIST, and I went to see that mainly because I had become a real fan of Lauren Bacall.  But i loved the movie and Wayne in it.  I agree with td that the magic of John Wayne may not come across on the small screen,  but THE SHOOTIST was a wonderful movie-going experience.

Sending vibes for a better rest of the month of October to BK.

I was going to mention HONDO being a 3-D movie, too. It was another of those book into local theaters during the mini=renaissance of 3-D in the early 1980s along with HOUSE OF WAX, DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER, and CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.

Geraldine Page also garnered her first Oscar nomination for her performance.

RED RIVER has always been my favorite movie that featured John Wayne in the cast. That might not be a bad choice for today's DVD.

As for John Wayne movies... I'm afraid I'll have to pass too.

However, I remember being tickled by the title of one of his movies when I was about 11 or 12 years old - in other words, right at the beginning of adolescence.  My cousin and I were watching TV, and they started running a promo for one his movies that was going to be shown in a couple of days.  "Chisolm"  We laughed and giggled for hours.

I guess RED RIVER or STAGECOACH.

I remember reading a story Kirk Douglas told where they were shooting IN HARM'S WAY, and Douglas saw in the script the line, "I mean to be in harm's way," and he thought, that's just too corny. Not even the Duke can pull that line off. So he waited for that scene to be shot, and Wayne just made it sound perfectly natural somehow on the first take, and Douglas knew why John Wayne is John Wayne.

And here I sit in Oakland like so much fish.

Oh, well.  I spent a pleasant several hours last night watching the WB's marvelous DVD of "The Adventures of Robin Hood."  I bought it upon its release and only JUST got around to watching.

I don't know from John Wayne movies. My mother would be so ashamed. She loves them.

TOD:

Red River, The Quiet Man, The Searchers - it would be hard to choose a favorite among that trio.....but if I HAD to, it would be THE SEARCHERS.

I also like NORTH TO ALASKA, some funny scenes and Capucine and Fabian and Stewart Granger, and a nice theme sung by Johnny Horton.

True Grit - I love the Elmer Bernstein score.  The High and the Mighty and Stagecoach.

DR MATTH was talking about the Bing Crosby-Donald O'Conner movie ANYTHING GOES last night.  I saw it on TV MANY years ago, and was a bit disappointed, although I liked the ocean liner settings.

Wonder if I want to see it again?  Was it in any stereo mode, DRMATTH?

I watched Bing and Fred Astaire in BLUE SKIES Friday night and enjoyed it.  A huge three million dollar Paramount DeLuxe production.  The color on the DVD was wonderful and I liked the song and dance.  Crosby certainly had an audience friendly screen persona.

Bing:  I saw your show last night.
Fred:  Did you enjoy it?
Bing:  Well to tell the truth, I thought you were on a bit too long....

"The Stephen Sondheim Album" (Is that the one where he sings "Giants in the Sky"?, etc., etc, etc..)... OH - maybe I'm thinking of "Out There" on "The Stephen Schwartz Collection")....

You're right on the SS Album, but missed on the Schwartz.

Brian sings "In What Ever Time We Have" from a show with with you are probably not familiar, "Children of Eden".

"Out Thre" is sung by Jason Daniely

DR MBarnum - So glad you got to meet and talk with Brian D'Arcy James.  He really is a nice guy - and, as you mentioned, quite a looker.  -And if you haven't heard him sing yet... just ask DR elmore, I'm sure he may have a few discs around his apartment (Titanic OCR, "The Stephen Sondheim Album" (Is that the one where he sings "Giants in the Sky"?, etc., etc, etc..)... OH - maybe I'm thinking of "Out There" on "The Stephen Schwartz Collection")....

-Sorry, BK, for mixing up "your" CDs.

;)

Brian D'Arcy James was in the production of Follies in Seattle in 1995 with Karen Morrow and Judy Kaye!  He played one of the young guys...Ben or Buddy, I can't remember which.  But I remember that he and the whole cast were quite good.  I loved seeing that show!! ;D

Shame on those who dismiss John Wayne.

Well, the Washington Center (where I ushered for the fabulous Melissa Manchester last night) is having their 20th anniversary celebration today, and I'm ushering again...actually, it's more like crowd control.  The entire event is free and there will be local performing groups performing all day long.  They even have a 20 foot cake!  All events and cake and beverages (non-alcoholic, I assume) are free!  So, I'm off again. :D

Matth, I've since Circus World.  Far from Duke's finest hour.

When I was a kid, I was always allowed to be dropped off at movies I wanted to see and left on my own; well, as it happened, there was a double feature of some horror movie (probably a Hammer rerelease) and CIRCUS WORLD.  I walked out of CIRCUS WORLD and spent the rest of my afternoon and pocket money at the five and dime up the street. . .

Who here ever saw CIRCUS WORLD? I always thought it would be an entertaining change of pace for John Wayne, but it didn't get very good reviews.

Oh, thank you Matt H., I forgot about CIRCUS WORLD.  I love that movie, but I am definately in the minority.  I liked it much better than THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH.

Julie Andrews' voice of experience
Her directorial debut, 'The Boy Friend' at the DuPont Theatre, echoes her Broadway debut in that play 51 years ago

30 Sep 05 - delawareonline.com

By CHRISTOPHER YASIEJKO / The News Journal

Fifty-one years ago, a 19-year-old British actress named Julie Andrews introduced herself to Broadway audiences. She played the part of Polly Browne in "The Boy Friend," which Sandy Wilson wrote as a playful sendup of 1920s musical comedies. She already was a polished vocalist, but the role advanced Andrews' rise to stardom.

She had an Oscar in her future -- the title role in "Mary Poppins" earned her the 1964 Academy Award for best actress. With the 1971 publication of "Mandy," she began a second (and still thriving) career in children's books. And long after her part in "The Sound of Music" garnered another Oscar nomination, Andrews in 1995 returned to Broadway with "Victor/Victoria."

These days, younger generations are most likely to recall her performances in "The Princess Diaries" (2001), "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (2004) and as the voice of Queen Lillian in the 2004 animated film "Shrek 2."

But here, in a small but striking opera house built in 1876 on the sleepy banks of the Connecticut River, Andrews once again is reinventing herself. This time, she is a director, and she knows her first play well.

In 1954, she played Polly, an English heiress who must deal with the social fallout when she falls for the delivery boy while at a finishing school on the French Riviera. In 2003, she directed "The Boy Friend" on a smaller scale at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, N.Y. It went well, and here she is, preparing for a national tour that stops first in Wilmington, with shows today through Oct. 9.

The plot and the set are simple but enchanting, a nod to the style that dominated musicals in the '20s, and anyone willing to suspend his or her disbelief for two hours is likely to leave the DuPont Theatre feeling thoroughly warm, fuzzy and at ease.

"There's a lot of sweet inanity that goes on," she says. "In this show you could play it for camp and some might enjoy that, but for me, a play that knows it's being camp is the kiss of death. So therefore I decided to have those campy moments played as real as possible."

Her version of the play, she says, splits the difference between the original London direction of Vida Hope, whose vision for "The Boy Friend" was as a tribute to the era, and the early Broadway direction of Cy Feuer, who presented it as a spoof.

"I don't think today's younger audience," Andrews says, "would even know what 1920s musicals were like."

She has "perhaps a tiny bit more confidence" than during her 2003 go-round. As a director, she describes herself as "very green," an appraisal similar to that which she gave herself when she played the part of Polly in 1954. She notes a significant difference between her Broadway and directorial debuts: "In those days, all I had to worry about was me."

Now she helps the members of her cast hone their approaches to speaking and singing, which, because of a surgery in 1997 to remove noncancerous nodes from her vocal chords, the once versatile Andrews no longer can revisit to the extent she'd like.

Of her potential strengths when she considered directing, Andrews says, "I realized that I can bring a big emphasis on the music and, in particular, the lyrics." When she guides a member of her cast through a song, she teaches them to "add the subtleties that I feel it can take" -- hold it a bit on the words "fancy free," for example, in the song of the same name. She tells them to treat the lyrics with "loving, teasing affection."

When she takes "The Boy Friend" to the DuPont Theatre today, Andrews transfers her production from a theater that seats 398 people to one that seats 1,251. The intimacy of Goodspeed allowed her to absorb the aisles as extensions of the stage. Actresses at one point thumped beach balls from one aisle to another, over the heads of audience members.

"There may not be access to the audience in the same way," she says of the DuPont Theatre, "so I may have to change that."

The cast of 16 dancing singers expands in Wilmington to 18, and the eight-piece orchestra adds two musicians.

Andrews is in Wilmington to kick off the show's tour, and the timing is such that, on Saturday, she'll celebrate her 70th birthday while in town. She says she understands Target, the tour's sponsor, has planned a party in her honor, "and I have a hunch that [husband] Blake [Edwards] has got something up his sleeve."

Much like the play she describes as "time suspended in a perfect little world," Andrews seems active and happy.

"I just think that I'm the luckiest woman alive," she says, "to be able to play in these little sandboxes."

Jessica Grové, who plays the role Andrews took to Broadway, told a reporter at The Wall Street Journal that the initial awe several cast members felt toward Andrews soon subsided -- "[A]fter a few days," she is quoted as having said, "she was just Julie, our director."

And, of course, Andrews prepares differently than she did when she stood in the spotlight.

"You think a lot," she says, "and you lie awake at night a lot. When you ingest a lot, thoughts come unbidden."

"I'm sure the more I do, the harder it will become."

Yes, DR JRand, Paramount has fitted ANYTHING GOES with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack (the original mono is there, too), and it sounds wonderful. Not as overpowering as the DD 5.1 that Warners fitted out for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, but less bombastic and perfectly pleasant to listen to. It's the movie that's a stiff.

The thing I remember most about HATARI is that everyone smokes and smokes and smokes. Amazing how perfectly ordinary and natural smoking at all times was back in those days: at meals, in bed, in just about any context.

And then you hear the rattle in Wayne's voice in ROOSTER COGBURN and THE SHOOTIST, and it sends a chill through the heart.

Der Brucer and I had a wonderful time at the Chef's Brunch today.  Our friend Charles Davidson, from Cafe Zeus, served up grilled lamb chops that had been seasoned with rosemary, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and a few other spices.  Delish, and all gone in less than two hours, they were that popular.

There was a Duck Leg "Tortelloni" from the Toscana Kitchen and Bar in Wilmington, another delightful dish.  Unlike another duck dish, a quesadilla served jerk style which totally buried the flavor of the duck, the tortelloni (presumably titled because they were much larger than a tortellini) tasted wonderfully of duck.  It was served with a triple cream goat cheese sauce and a sprinkle of candied pecans.

There was a roasted corn and lobster bisque, from the new Fins Fish House that der B really liked.  It's going to be hard to replicate at home, though, since the chef's recipe in the souvenier book calls for four 1 1/2 pound live lobsters and six cups of heavy cream.  We'll have to head over to the restaurant some time this winter to try out their other wares.

The Dogfish Head brewery had some of their premium vodkas to sample, along with their award-winning beers.  We both enjoyed their raspberry vodka, served in a small dark chocolate shot cup from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory - definately the right way to sample such a sip.

Sad to say, the Genseng Chicken from Confucious Restaurant was underwhelming.  The chicken was fine, but the genseng broth was nothing special.

For some reason, two dishes involved coffee, at tables that were right next to each other.  The Blue Water Grill had Java Rubbed Salmon (with cucumber wasabi creme fraiche), while the Atlantic Seafood Company served a Coffee-Rubbed Pork Loin (with pineapple-mango salsa).  Both were quite good, but they seemed in competition when sampled back to back.

And there were wines to be sampled, and a Bloody Mary bar (hosted by the Blue Moon) and a Martini bar (hosted by one of the region's liquor wholesalers).

All and all, a good time was had.  But I do have to wonder how it is that, on my day off, when I'd think I'd be keeping off my feet as much as I can, we ended up at an event that was so stand-up as this one!

(I'm still looking forward to Wednesday...and, if you get a chance, DRJose, could you send me one of those questionaires?)

FInished A CHORUS LINE this afternoon. Again, let me say how ironic that such a disapppointing movie has been fitted out with such a sterling transfer in both picture and sound.

There was also a documentary on the DVD with Marvin Hamlisch talking about his longtime desire to be a Broadway composer and some other fairly interesting tidbits about writing the score for the show.

At one point in the documentary, he mentioned the two new songs for the movie, and then they showed brief clips from them. One of the new songs was listed as "Who Am I Anyway?" that Paul sings at the end of "I Hope I Get It." Of course, the person making the documentary must have been totally ignorant of the original show as that little melody has always been a part of the show. "Let Me Dance for You" was the (mostly) new song that the documentarian forgot to mention. Sheesh!

After A CHORUS LINE wrapped up, I too RED RIVER off the to-watch shelf and started watching it. I've had this disc for a long, long time, and this disc must have been put out near the beginning of the DVD revolution as the transfer comes from a fairly unimpressive master. I've seen RED RIVER look better than this DVD.

I watched about 30 minutes of it, but the mediocre picture and sound was kind of a turn-off. I left it in the player, and I may go back and watch a little more of it tonight before regular network TV kicks in.

I can see why Montgomery Clift made such a huge impression on audiences of the day. He has real star quality and despite being so much smaller and slighter than John Wayne, stands his ground and keeps audience interest in him just as much as Wayne does.

When I turned RED RIVER off, I flipped on the DVR and watched the two shows I had recorded earlier in the week: REUNION and THE OFFICE.

For REUNION, another of the six original teenagers was shown alive in the present which now means either the rich guy, the movie star, or unwed mother was the friend who was killed. For some reason, I thought this was the episode that was going to reveal the identity of the victim. I was misinformed.

THE OFFICE had sexual harrassment in the workplace as its premise this week, and it was truly un-PC which means it was insulting but funny.

After that was over, I noticed that I had set the DVR to record a movie I haven't seen in years off the Fox Movie Channel - MAKING LOVE.

The print doesn't have great color, and it's not especially sharp. This was probably a tape master as its full frame and kind of bland looking. The sound is stereo surround, though, so I'll give it a plus for that.

I haven't watched this movie in years, and I only watched about 40 minutes of it today, but it's nice to see this again. Michael Ontkean is still heartbreaking to me in the part of Zach.

A small incident, but one that caused another checker (Kimmi) and me to laugh out loud.  Both of our registers were near the pharmacy/appearances aisle, and a display of suntan lotions was in plain view if I stood where the customers come into my lane.

As it happened, the bottles of lotions were being displayed at an angle.  And on the bottom shelf, mixed in with the lotions, was a bottle of Heinz 57 Ketchup.  Not only had someone put the bottle where it didn't belong, they had put it on the shelf at the exact same angle as all of the lotions.

Kimmi came over to see what I was laughing about, and when I pointed it out to her started laughing too.  "That must be for the natural sun-burnt look!"

I really enjoy my job.

I slept rather late today, owing to a late night last nigth.  My best friend from college was up in Seattle to celebrate his birthday, so we went out to the clubs, which I haven't done in about a year.  We hit a popular gay club, and had a great time.  But I'd forgotten one of the distinct downsides to clubbing...waking up the next morning with the strong smell of ciggarette smoke in my hair...unseemly.

I'm slowly working my way through the house cleaning chores for the day.  The kitchen and bathroom were in dire need of attention.  I also need do some laundry.

I so wish Jed and I could be in New York this weekend!  Sounds like all the HHW folk are having a splendid time.

telegraph.co.uk/  23/03/2005

After almost 60 years, an aura of magic still surrounds Julie Andrews, our most irresistible showbiz trouper, says Sarah Crompton

Most people have strong views about Julie Andrews. They love her - or they hate her. Perhaps it says something about my friends that when they heard I was about to meet her when she came to London to see Mary Poppins on stage for the first time, they nearly all jumped around with unmitigated delight.

I'm definitely in the pro-camp. I adored Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music when I was a child, and I still enjoy watching them with my children. Having met their star, now almost 70, the magic persists: Andrews is so unfailingly, punctiliously courteous it is hard not to warm to her.

But there is steel there, too: the strong backbone of a girl on stage since childhood; a firm determination not to disappoint. So, last week, when she swept into the Prince Edward Theatre, she was regal and smiling. This was the theatre where she had her first starring role at the age of 12 as the egg in Humpty Dumpty. Fifty seven years later, people had given an astonishing £600,000 to charity to be in the same auditorium as her, and she was going to put on a great show once again.

"Oh wow, it's Mary Poppins," said a child lucky enough to see her heroine's arrival in glittering black and a battery of flash bulbs. "You wanna see the real Mary Poppins. Well, there she is," said another fan, hugging her daughter close to share the magic.

The words I scribbled in my notebook at that moment were "What a trouper!" because Julie Andrews definitely belongs to that showbiz tradition where chorus girls go out as nobodies and come back as stars and where the show must always go on.

At the end of the gala performance, as the new Mary Poppins (Laura Michelle Kelly) flew away, she smiled at the original sitting below her. "That was the moment that got to me," Andrews told me afterwards. But five minutes later she was on stage herself, giving a witty and gracious speech about a fantastic evening and batons being passed to a new generation.

It had been, she said "Supercali…" and she signed, just as the cast had done early in the show, the letters for the famous superlative. And then, she sang, joining in a prearranged chorus of "It's a jolly holiday…" There was barely a dry eye in the house. What a trouper!

Because, of course, Julie Andrews can't really sing any more. That staggering, clear-as-a-bell, four-octave voice vanished in a botched operation in 1997. Now, she says, she has "about five" bass notes left.

"There is huge regret and sadness I can't sing," she told me. "I wish with all my heart that I could. I miss the deep, deep pleasure of singing with an orchestra."

When she consoles herself with the thought that this happened to her at a time when "I might not be singing as much anyway" you can't help feeling that such comfort has been hard-won. Yet the instinct to pick yourself up and start all over again is also part of the showbiz tradition in which she grew up.

Much of her taste seems conditioned by her affection for those vaudeville days. She roars with surprisingly raucous laughter when recounting her favourite line from The Producers: "The first rule is never put your money in the show. The second is NEVER PUT YOUR MONEY IN THE SHOW."

Her favourite Sondheim musical is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which is essentially a vaudeville pastiche. Her favourite song in Mary Poppins is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious "because it was knock-down, drag-out vaudeville, and for me nothing like it had ever been done and it was fun to do, fun to be silly and just kick up our heels."

When she finally gets around to writing her long-promised autobiography, she wants to concentrate on the early days when she worked with everyone from Max Wall to Max Bygreaves. She was 12 when she scored her first big success - "this adult voice in a kid" - in a revue called Starlight Roof. Since then, she has never really stopped working, finding success on Broadway in The Boyfriend, My Fair Lady and Camelot - and then launching into films with Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.

It is an extraordinary trajectory and the toughness of her days as a child star must have lent her the strength to keep up with the opportunities offered to her. This is particularly true of Mary Poppins. It was her first film, and, if you watch the extras on the new DVD released to mark its 40th anniversary, what you see is a smiling girl sitting on piles of crates, surrounded by black screens, waiting around for the animators to be happy everything was perfect.

"It was," she told me, "the best acting lesson and the best lesson about film you could ever have had. It taught me the virtue of patience which you really need on any movie - and it was jolly difficult to pretend to be looking at a penguin when there was nothing there."

The thing she found hardest, she says, was the heat. "We rehearsed under a black tarpaulin on the back lot. It was meant to give us shade… but the heat in the San Fernando Valley was searing. We all trimmed up and sweated out so much, it got us into great shape. But the heat for me was really telling - quite an ordeal."

What she doesn't mention, until I ask her about it, was that she had just had a baby with her first husband Tony Walton, a daughter who was only three months old when they started shooting. She must have been exhausted. But that's not how she remembers it: "She'd come on the set, and I'd do some feeding. It was dear. It was a very happy time."

That anecdote tells you a lot of what you need to know about Julie Andrews. She is sweet - and she is very strong. She is one of the finest products of a British showbiz tradition that made them that way. And we are not going to see her like again.

Der Brucer is feeling conflicted.  He knows we've got certain shows he wants to tape, so we can watch them later.  (Including Desperate Housewives, still catching up from season one there but don't worry about spoilers, chat away.)  But he's not entirely sure what show comes on at what time; the TV logs aren't all giving the same information.

So he was "overjoyed" when I told him there's a new ep of Iron Chef America tonight...not!  (At least it's one show we both enjoy.   ;D)

But I have three shows to watch at 9 and now that I will continue to check out EXTRAS for at least two more episodes, two shows at 10. (EXTRAS actually comes on at 10:30 after CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.)

The Duke:  Stagecoach, The Searchers, The Quiet Man, Rio Bravo, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, True Grit,  Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Without Reservations.

Shame on those who dismiss John Wayne.

Matth, I've since Circus World.  Far from Duke's finest hour.
I can certainly live with the shame.
There are people who like Adam Sandler movies too.

Of course after a certain point....everything he was in WAS a John Wayne movie.  Kind of like an Elvis Presley movie or a Sandra Dee movie or a Doris Day movie.

Back from hanging out with the gang. MBarnum and I met at Carnegie Hall for the Red Bull Artsechro, which turned out to be pretty interesting. An orchestra mixed with a kid "playing" turntables. It sounds bad, I know, but the orchestrated music was pretty fun with a kind of exotica sound, and the turntable stuff didn't overwhelm the live music. We did leave at intermission, so we would have time for MBarnum to get to the Virgin Megastore to shop for Bollywood music. He bought some. I found THE PIRATE MOVIE on dvd, so it was a suceessful trip, then we met everyone at John's Pizzeria.
Ben, Ant, TPunk, Jose, Elmore, and Danise were there. We had plenty o' pizza and some laffs and laughs too. MBarnum and Jose went off to a special interest club  and we all parted ways. Now I am going to laze about for the rest of my Sunday.

I've just received the new Katie Melua CD "Piece By Piece".
"The Closest Thing To Crazy" on the first album is one of my favourite Cd tracks of the last few years. This album lives up to the promise.  I can't remember if Katie met with the same success in the USA as she has in the UK and OZ. I much prefer her work to that of the much lauded Nora Jones.

Back from a whopping six hour Kritzer tour.  Dear reader Hisaka had gone through all three books and made a list of places four pages long, and I do believe we saw just about all of them (or at least where they used to be).  We started at the Wiltern Theater, did that area (including my father's restaurant - she took photographs wherever we went), went back to Sunset and Vine, did that area, then headed down to mid-Wilshire, did that area, then the Kritzer neighborhood, then over to West LA where we did a lunch stop at Dolores so she could have an authentic Kritzer meal.  Then we made our way to the beach so she could see where Grandma and Grandpa Kritzer lived and where POP once stood.  We took a long walk on the Venice boardwalk, and I even stopped by my old apartment building highrise, The Shores, and had a nice chat with the lady security guard, who told me many fascinating things that have happened since I left in January of 1996.  I'll have more details in the notes.

She thought that was the best hamburger she's ever eaten in her life.  Here she is at the beach, about five minutes from where POP and the St. Regis Hotel once stood.  She is surrounded by the familiarly wacko strollers of the Venice Boardwalk.

Well, it's a good thing I'm not leaving for New York until tomorrow. I've spent most of the day recovering from the fabulous wedding party last night.  It was a night to remember.

It took place at the Orpheum Theatre, which underwent a 12 million dollar restoration to it's 1920s splendor about 4 years ago. You can see it at www.orpheumlive.com

When we arrived the bride and groom were outside. They had a family ceremony before the guests were invited so they were already married. The guests were inside in the lobby drinking champagne. We were told that there was no peeking into the theatre until we were told to do so.

I went outside and across the street a bus stopped and a drum corp got out, yes, it was a drum corp. They marched across the street and into the lobby. The bride and groom fell in behind and we all followed down the aisles of the theatre and up to the stage.

The stage!  It had been transformed by some set designers who recently left Hollywood and moved back to the area.  It was incredible and I don't think I can adequately explain it, but we were in a fabulous night club. Part the Red Room from New Orleans, part a nightclub that was in the Avaitor. They didn't miss a detail!  The band stand was set up so there was a wall behind them facing the house, thus it was no longer a stage, it was a room, a fabulous night club.

The guests were all dressed to the nines. Much more glamourous than I had ever seen anyone look here in Sioux City. The band was from Minneapolis and was fantastic. It had a horn section, 3 singers etc.  They played standards for about an hour or two and then......it was 70s music and disco!  There was a great tile dance floor and everyone danced and danced. They had a fabulous looking bar - open bar all night, a wonderful spread of food - replenished all night, tables, banquettes, fresh roses on every table and fabulous backdrops with full lenghth paintings of glamorous dancers.

You really had no choice but to have a good time. It was like the bride knew what she wanted for her ideal wedding party and since the place didn't exist, at least here, she created it and took us all with her and made us part of her dream.

What an evening. Today, I was moving quite slowly, got up, had breakfast followed by a 5 hour nap!  Now I'm starting to pack and get ready for the trip. I intended to do some cleaning around the house etc, but it will just have to wait until I get back.

Good Evening!

Whew!

As DRs elmore and Rodzinksi reported, we all met up at John's Pizzeria for some darn good pizza, and some great conversation.  It was also really good getting see DR Ben and his ever-lovin' Ant again - it's been a while since I've seen Anthony.

DR Rodzinski - What was the "issue" with the busboy as we were leaving?  -If there was an issue.

While DRs Rodzinksi and MBarnum were at Carnegie Hall, I headed over to Columbus Circle to sit down for a bit and make some phone calls.  I realized that I had not checked my voice mail in a few days, so.... "You have 18 new messages."  -18?!?!?  Thankfully(?), a bunch of them were from telemarketers, but there were a few I did have to make note of and just one I had to make sure to return/respond.

And they installed some nice new benches around the statue of Columbus at Columbus Circle.  Very comfy.  While sitting there, I made to sure to clean my rugby shirt...  While walking through Central Park on the way to Carnegie Hall with DR MBarnum, I felt something hit my shoulder.  -Oh, it's an acorn...  Hmm... It still feels like the acorn is still there... Oh... Maybe it's not an acorn... Oh... Alas, a bird had left it's calling card on my left shoulder.  -At least it did not hit my head.  Whew!  DR MBarnum had wiped off the majority of it for me earlier, and I was able to get the rest of it off of my shirt with some bottled water, napkins and elbow grease.

Then I headed into the Shops for a bit of browsing at Border's and Williams-Sonoma.  There were some major cooking demonstrations and sampling going on since it was Founder's Day at Williams-Sonoma.  I did not partake of any of the goodies, believe it or not, but the store sure did smell yummy.  A few minutes later, I met DR TPunk upstairs, and....

Keep the pictures of DR Hisaka coming!  It's almost as good as being there.

Adam Sandler is neither a "movie star" nor an "actor."  There's a certain amount of "class" that goes with both terms; also the camera doesn't do Mr. Sandler any justice which I can think of. . .

I just took in the final portion of the JOAN CRAWFORD bio on the MILDRED PIERCE dvd, now, there was a Movie Star and an Actress, but primarily a Movie Star

Speaking of actors/movies stars. . .Julie Christie is making a little bit of a splash these days in supporting roles, almost miniscule roles as in the third HARRY POTTER movie. . .
So, DRs one and all. . .who do you think the last Movie Stars who were also Actors were?
I'd go with Robert Redford.  Ms. Christie might be my choice for the female side. . .

Well, I'm as packed as I can be the night before.  We went this afternoon to see My Fair Lady, with Marla Schaffel as Eliza and James Young (John Vickery's understudy) as Higgins.  It was a beautiful production and I'm quite pleased with our Schuster seats.  They're pretty high-up (first-time subscribers), but on an aisle.  Three weeks from today we see Ten Tenors at the other venue, The Victoria Theatre, a beautifully restored old house across the street from the brand-new Schuster.  All this in Dayton, Ohio.

I took DR TPunk over to Takashimaya - the same Japanese department store I had taken DR MBarnum too yesterday.  Again, lots of window shopping and "dreaming".  They truly do have some beautiful things amongst their inventory.  Alas, a lot of it is also prohibitively expensive.

I played a little game of "The Price Is Right" with TPunk.... "So, how much do you think this cabinet is worth?"  -$3,500.  "I'm sorry, the actual retail price is $17,000."   -"And now this storage unit?"  -$18,000.  "Yeah, you are correct!"  -"And, finally, this beautiful oversized sideboard?"  -Hmm.. Let's say, $22,000.   "I'm sorry.  The actual retail price is $45,000."  "Thank you for playing.  Enjoy the rest of your visit to Takashimaya."

;)

*DR Rodzinski - If you happen to be "in need" of a gift for Antonia, I have a few ideas I can pass on to you.  And all at various price points.

;D

However, we did not leave empty-handed.  Well, I left empty-handed, but TPunk found some cool greeting cards in the first floor Sale section.  And she got one of those cool triangular shopping bags too!

After heading out from John's Pizzeria, DR MBarnum and I headed back over to the Virgin Megastore.  But since the movie did not begin until 8:30, and it was only 6:45, Michael "suggested" we head somewhere and get dessert and coffee.  So.. We headed over to Joe Allen.  I figured Michael should at least pay one visit to THE official restaurant of HHW while he was in town.

We sat at the bar since the host would only seat us in the dining room proper if we were ordering a full dinner.  -And there was practically no on in there...  Ah, well.. In any case...

While sitting at the bar, a woman caught Michael's eye, and...  -I'll let him tell the rest of that story.

OH!  DR Jason - Craig Bierko was not there tonight like he has been the past couple of times I've been there.  ;)

In any case...

The dessert choices tonight were the Warm Chocolate Pudding Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream, and the Peach, Blueberry, Raspberry Cobbler with (gobs of) Whipped Cream.  Both were very good, and we managed to almost clean our plates.

It turned out that Rosie O'Donnell was sitting in the main dining room with some of her Fiddler cast mates and some family.  I recognized a pal of mine sitting at the table, but held off saying HI to him... in order to get to say HI to Rosie.  -But, at least MBarnum got to see someone famous... whom he recognized.  ;)  ... But then there was that other woman...

;)

After we finished our dessert, we headed back over to Virgin, browsed a bit more, and Michael found a few more CDs to purchase.  While he headed to the cash register - and then onto his Bollywood movie - I headed on back uptown.

DR elmore - How was Patience?  Where's Danise tonight?  Any word from Jane?  Do you want be to stop asking questions?

Well... As for Danise... We walked her up to TKTS to see if Once Around the Sun was up on the board, and sure enough it was.  -She "knows" one of the stars of the show, and was hoping to catch the show while she was in town, so...

After she picked up here ticket, I pointed her in the direction of the theatre.  I hope she made it there - and I hope I pointed her in the right direction.  And, most of all, I hope she's enjoying/enjoyed the show.

...On the way to John's, I noticed that Brad Oscar was doing his usual hanging out by and of the stage door of the St. James.  It was the top of the second act, and it's one his few "breaks" in the show.  I had spotted him a few times before, but this time I decided to go ahead and go up to him and introduce myself to him.  "Hi, I'm Jose.  I'll be your assistant conductor for Damn Yankees."  We chatted very briefly, but he did say he's looking forward to the show.

Then TPunk and I headed next door to John's Pizzeria to meet the gang, and Mr. Oscar went back to his second act.

Monday, 10/3 - 6:30 - Barrymore's - DR elmore made the reservation.  If you think you might make it, be sure to check in with him if you haven't already.

Tuesday, 10/4 - ?:??, Restaurant to be determined.  DR elmore asked me to "host" this evening, but I think I may have to pass.  I know Indian was the planned cuisine, but that's not necessarily set in stone.  Additionally, I may be working Tuesday, and I'm not sure what time I'll be done... and with Wednesday already planned as a full day...  I know that the ladies of HHW were planning a walking tour of Central Park that day, and maybe they/you could just continue from there to dinner.  If you'd like any restaurant suggestions, feel free to ask.  But, for right now, the time and place is still up in the air.  *Just remember, you have a long day coming up on Wednesday...

Wednesday - 9:30-6:30 - The Walking and Eating Tour, NYC - 2005.

8:00-ish - La Cocina - Come one!  Come all!

DR Jose - thanks for the updates.  Tuesday will be my shopping day - my main destination is Bloomingdale's, but I may stop by Takashimaya after reading your description.

I highly suggest Takashimaya.  Especially after Bloomie's.  Takashimaya is a department store, but it's not a madhouse.  It's very calming and beautifully laid out and decorated.  I just like going in there to get away from the hustle and bustle from time to time.

Up on the Sixth Floor is their Health & Beauty department.  The "hostesses" up there are always more than happy to help you select a fragrance, try out a skin care regime, etc.  You can get a full makeover, treat your hands to a salt or sugar scrub... Or just have them touch up your make-up if you like - and there's never a sense of obligation to buy something afterwards.  And they have some very high quality cosmetics and fragrances.  Be sure to check out the Bedroom and Children's Clothes on the Fourth Floor.  -The lavender and rose drawer liners and sachets are perfect wedding, engagement, etc., gift.

And if you happen to get a case or two of sticker shock after checking out some of the price tags, the tea room - which they call the Tea Box - in the basement is a nice place to relax, sip a cup of tea (you can choose from at least 25 varieties), and nibble on some tea sandwiches and cookies.  Lunch is served from 11:30-2:45, and the Afternoon Tea menu kicks in at 3:00.  Again, highly recommended - and a surprisingly good deal too.

Probably not me, 'cause I'm meeting a non-HHW friend at 3:30 at his office and hope to be seeing Walking Down Broadway at 7.  If I'm unable to get a ticket tomorrow afternoon for that, I'll just try TKTS Tuesday evening for something.

Or maybe just rest up for Wednesday  ;)

Looking ahead.  Planning ahead.

Here is the general route for Wednesday's tour by neighborhood.

Start at Rockefeller Center - Take the F or V down to Lower East Side
Lower East Side
Chinatown
Little Italy
SoHo
The West Village
Chelsea Market
Chelsea
Midtown/Theatre District
Columbus Circle

After Columbus Circle, you will have the option to head back to your hotels to freshen up, rest up, make phone calls, etc.  Or you may continue walking up Broadway and exploring the Upper West Side.  And then the tour will end at La Cocina for the Grand Dinner - well, I guess I should say the Fiesta Grande!

Again, the main route covers about four and a half miles to five miles.

If you will be joining us midway, just call me on my cell - if you don't have my cell yet, just PM or e-mail - and I'll give you an idea of where we are and the closest subway stop.  I'll post a prospective timetable sometime tomorrow or Tuesday.

As for tomorrow night's trek to Splash...

Since there will be a gathering at Barrymore's, I'm thinking the best plan of attack would be to meet at Barrymore's - if you won't already be there for the dinner at 8:00, and we shall subway en masse down to Splash.

Musical Mondays starts at 8:00 and continues until midnight upstairs, and then until 2:00am downstairs in the lounge.

If you will be meeting us at Splash later in the evening, the bar is located at 50 West 17th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues, closer to 6th Ave.)  You can take the 4/5/6/N/R to Union Square; the F/L to 14th St. @ 6th Ave.; the 1/9 to 18th @ 7th Ave,; or the 1/2/3/9 to 14th @ 7th Ave.

There is usually no cover charge, but sometimes one will kick in past 10:00 - usually just $5.00.  Cokes run about $4.00, and rail drinks start at $6.00.  There is NO drink minimum.

You do not have to stay the whole evening.  It's just a block or two walk to the nearest subway, and if the A train runs Express from the 14th street stop - just two stops to Times Square.

There are video screens all over the place, so you will be surrounded by Barbara, Liza, Jennifer, Idina, Patti and many other throughout the evening.  Bars and restaurants in NYC are non-smoking, but the noise levels can still cause a bit of ringing in the ears.  *The decibel level in the downstairs lounge is at a more comfortable level.  It truly is just a nice place to hang out and have fun.  And people watch.  *Splash can get warm sometimes, so dress accordingly.  It's very casual - jeans and t-shirt are prefectly acceptable.

Hmm... So who exactly was going to dinner on Tuesday night?

Well the whole thing is still slightly "up in the air"

The original cast was elmore, MBarnum , Danise, Ben, Jane, the Vixter & myself,  I think Jason was going to try and join, possibly Rodzinski & Tpunk.

Indian food was elmore's suggestion,  in honor of MBarnum, (supposing of course he had not by then accidently tumbled from any roofs).  Jane apparently loves Indian food, I can only assume MBarnum is a fan as well.  The Vixter and I have never partaken of the cuisine but are willing to give it ago.  I cannot speak to anyone else.  Being a mere suburbanite I have no clew where to eat so suggestions are most welcome.

If you leave it to me we'll end up at John's Pizza and get a pizza curry

I like Indian food.

There are some very good, and very cheap Indian places in Little India.  Just take the 6 Train to Astor Place and let your nose and eyes guide you to where you want to eat.

Although, some of those hole-in-the-wall Indian places up and down 9th Avenue are pretty good too.

OH! Since you will be staying at the Comfort Inn - there is a small counter place called Kati Roll almost across the street from your hotel.  I tried this place out after it was recommended to me by one of the monitor's at the Equity Building - which is also on 46th.  It's basically Indian street food - various fillings, vegetarian and meat, rolled up in paratha.  Very good and filling.  And single roll runs just about $4.00.  With a discount given when you buy two of the same roll.

...And down the street, there is Utsav.  They have a great lunch buffet, and the dinner menu is nice too - if a little in the "fine dining" price range.  A beautiful second floor space.

There is a more centralized "little India" in Manhattan. Lexington Avenue around 33rd Street has several fine Indian places or cheap Indian eats like "Curry in a Hurry."

Tomovoz, cute bears.

Jose thanks for all the info, however I'm at the hotel computer without any paper.  I will give you a call when I'm ready for Indian food.

I should head to my room now.  I've been up since 4:00 and have a very early wake-up call tomorrow.  On west coast time it will still be 4:00.

News:

PIPPIN the puppy has returned to his former home.

That is all.

Are you lonesome tonight?

Or did that puppy bite?

Did it chew on your sofa and pee?

Did it soil your rug

When you gave it a hug?

And put in your ear a new flea?

Did it bark 'til the neighbors called the police?

Did your landlord threaten to cancel your lease?

Walking the dog in the rain

Can be a real pain

Are you happy or lonely tonight?

Oh, Jose the thing with that guy at John's was he rather rudely booted me from the restroom, which turned out to be the handicapped restroom. There was a ladies room and this other bathroom, so I ducked in there and he came smashing in on me, and I didn't find it necessary.

I finished the movie MAKING LOVE this evening, and I enjoyed it for what it is, not a great film, but a great moment in the history of gay-themed cinema.

I remember sitting in the theater watching this with a crowd of friends. Sitting two rows in front of us was (I guess) a straight couple, anyway a man and woman. When the camera pushed in as Harry Hamlin and Michael Ontkean kissed, the woman very quietly turned her head into her fella's shoulder; she couldn't watch it.

I find that interesting because I have several straight female friends who find male-male encounters in the movies very sexy and enjoy watching when it happens (as infrequent as it is in the movies and on TV).

Times change, I guess.

I had kind of lost interest in lAS VEGAS over the summer and hadn't really planned on tuning it in this season, but I'll see the story to its conclusion tomorrow night. I've always been a big fan of Jill Hennessy ever since her LAW & ORDER four year run, so I'll watch.

...meaning I'm free that night.  :P

Granny is actually doing well. I talked to my mom today and she said that Granny is tired of the hospital food, but she could "probably eat some biscuits and gravy from Cracker Barrel." LOL!

On a sad and very ironic note, a friend of hers that we all grew up with died last night. About 9 months ago he was in a horrible car accident after church and was in a coma, which he came out of in April. Last night he was driving his family home from a soccer game while eating a burrito from Taco Bell, on which he choked to death. He was 42, I believe.

His older sister, one of my mother's best friends, suffered from breast cancer for 10 years and died in 2000. Their parents are still alive and are completely and understandably devastated. The matriarch recently overcame breast cancer of her own and the patriarch suffered a pretty severe stroke a couple of years ago.

I was watching a documentary of the Kennedy family on PBS today and thought about how it seemed their family was marked or cursed. Now I'm starting to think my mom's friend's family might be another Kennedy clan.

E&T also stands for Entertainment and Travel.  So here's a CPA financial planning tip someone may want to try at an HHW gathering :)

If you're in show business, you should be able to deduct 50% of the cost of the meal if you pick up the check.  So if you're really really really tempted to do that, remember:  Never announce that you're picking up the check until after dessert is ordered.  That way, people will order frugally expecting to pay for themselves, and - alternatively - if someone orders the prime rib and the top-of-the-line brandy, you can always back down on your plan to treat.
