Well, you've read the notes, you know what we're celebrating and how we're celebrating, so now it is time for you to post until the celebrating cows come home - they'll be here as soon as we reach our next plateau.

DR Vixmom and I have a similkar problem. Hopefully she got back to sleep. After waking up at 4 a.m. and not being able to get OLIVER! tunes out of my head, I struggled until 5:30 trying to fall back asleep, and have just given up.

OLIVER! was so badly directed and so feebly choreographed that I felt bad for some of the talented singing actors on stage, trapped in a sinking ship of a show.

The physical production was quite wonderful actually, and I appreciated some of the singing voices enough to have made the evening not a total washout.

But it won't go down as one of the more memorable OLIVER!s that I've seen.

I wanted to address Elmore's comment yesterday about the comment I made taken from the book about Rock Hudson's agent Henry Willson who tried in vain twice (1948-1949) to get Rock signed to an MGM contract.

Elmore wrote:

"Then how did Van Johnson, Charles Walters and several others get through the MGM doors?"

Van Johnson was hired during the war when most of MGM's star players were overseas. As leading men were in such short supply during that time, MGM, like other studios, made the most they could with what they had. You will notice, however, that they insisted that he marry, so his dear best friend Keenan Wynn and his wife Edie arranged for Keenan and Edie to divorce and Van to marry Edie. (Keenan, being a character actor, didn't have the same necessity for appearances as a leading man did.) That was as much an arranged match as the one Henry Willson cooked up for Rock with his secretary Phyllis Gates.

Rock's attempts to get signed at MGM happened after the war when there was an influx of handsome men ready for the star system makeover. Van just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Charles Walters was a dancer/choreographer when he was hired and was never on the fast track for movie stardom. MGM, of course, had many homosexuals working behind the scenes from directors like George Cukor to music men like Roger Edens and Conrad Salinger to costume designers like Walter Plunkett. They didn't seem to have a problem with gays behind the scenes.

The comment was specifically designed to say that MGM's casting agents were homophobic about signing men they know upfront to be gay. Louis B. Mayer's aversion to homosexuals has been well documented. Mayer was still in control of the studio in 1948-49.

I watched BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES III yesterday with my friend Gregg. (He hadn't seen any of it; I saw it on PBS so was most interested in the four bonus clips.)

I had no memory of that Angela Lansbury performance of "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Obviously done the year she won the Tony for GYPSY, she was in great voice (though she was lip-synching).

Loathed "The American Dream" number from MISS SIAGON just as much this time around.

bk, as to the ABC Movie of the Week releases on DVD, there have been many more than two.

DUEL is available. THE NIGHT STALKER and THE NIGHT STRANGLER have been available for quite a while. BRIAN'S SONG was also released a couple of years ago. I have all of these.

The book as you said did not live up to expectations. What I objected to most was its incompleteness. To give him credit, the author states upfront that it's not going to be a complete listing of the telecasts but rather his own favorites from each season. Since he's self-publishing the book, I guess that's his right. And so far he seems to have hit on all the ones I wanted to read something about however incomplete the information about the movies is.

At least it's a start. I wouldn't be so quick to assume this has ruined the market for a book of its type (only better). There have been several different volumes by different authors about the same TV series including three on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW that I'm aware of and two on THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW.

I can tell you right off the bat which subject I did awful in during elementary shcool: art.

I couldn't color neatly. I couldn't draw straight lines even using a ruler. There is something about my hands and tools that just don't compute. I always struggled with the arts and crafts parts of the curriculum. And yet I played musical instruments with no trouble. Weird, I know!

English and American history were my two favorite subjects and also my best ones in both high school and college.

Good morning, all!  I was out a bit late last night, and I'm dragging around, listening to Mozart's Great Mass in C and wondering who it is that decides something is great.  Why is this Mass "great?" Why is Schubert's Symphony No 9 "Great?"  Why am I not "great?"  Sometimes things in the musical worlds, as well as others, catch my attention.  Granted, I believe Mozsrt is the greatest in music as Jane Austen is to literature, but who was this 19th or 20th Century arbiter to decide this Mass is "great" over the other ones Mozart wrote?

And thus we land on the TOD:
I did very well in Latin, Music, Art, Math, and English classes.
I did very poorly in Chemistry, Physics, and all shop classes except for drafting, which I loved.

Topic of the day:

Elementary school - best in math, worst in Jewish history
High school - best in math, worst in World Geography
College - best in computer programming and taxes, worst in psychology
Graduate - best in urban economics (where I did my term paper on Urban Economics as a theme in Broadway musicals), relatively worst in financial statement auditing, but I got my best GPA in graduate school
Law school - best in ethics and antitrust, worst in criminal law and family law (also did shockingly poorly in an employment discrimination class)

I've just returned from having a sweet breakfast at Krispy Kreme (the store near my house has tables and chairs both inside the shop and outside on a terrace. Very nice to have a couple of morning doughnuts and watch the world go by.

My houseguest and I both drove our cars there since the shop is right on his way out of town going back home.

We had a nice visit, and it was a pleasure having him. He's doing a show next month calling WALKING ACROSS EGYPT (I think) or something similar to that, so I'll probably be heading up his way the weekend before Thanksgiving to see him emote.

Topic of the Day:

Elementary School - I did rather well in all subjects.  However, that seemed to change once I got to...

High School: My favorite subject was Band/Music/Choir (naturally), but I also liked my sophomore year Sociology (Fr. Luis Valdivieso) and English (Mr. Johnson) classes, and my Junior year Government (Sr. Maureen Christopher) class.  Oh, and my two years of French (Mme. Pereira and Mrs. Edmonson).

However, Physics and AP History (there was just way too much reading to do - and I was taking AP English at the same time) did me in.  -In fact, and I'm surprised I'm willing to admit this publicly, I failed AP History.  BUT, I did get an "A" when I made up the class during summer school.  So there!

College:  Again, I loved my music classes - with the possible exception of the Music History component of the core curriculum - the teacher was just sooooo dry and uninvolved - there was too much emphasis on memorizing dates and places, rather than concepts and ideas.  We truly just had to read the book (the classic Grout and Palisca), and show up and take the tests to pass the class.

My favorite class was Song Literature (Melanie Kohn-Day).  A truly wonderful class - a great teacher, a great curriculum, and it was interactive.  The class was geared toward Vocal Performance majors, and they would learn three or four songs each semester as "live" examples of what we were studying.  Since I was a pianist, Melanie coached me as a pianist - playing for my classmates every now and then.  However, there were a few times when I would also get to sing in the class.  I think I still remember Ives' "Ann Street".  And I also had one of those racy Campion songs - I remember not being able to keep a straight face while singing the refrain, "Cherry ripe."

:)

Alas, the bane of my college academic career was Calculus.  -Well, I had tested into that level Math class, so... And, heck, I just needed one math class to fulfill that requirement.  Well...  After two dubious attempts to complete and pass the class, I finally "regressed" and took the College Algebra class.  It was a lab, which meant that you could basically take the class at your own pace.  So... After getting the basic formulas back in my head, I finished the class in about three weeks!

Lesson learned:  Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

;)

Oh, and there was also a required Large Ensemble (choir, band, etc.) component.  I liked singing in the choir, but the extra time involved for rehearsals and the concerts really got to be a pain, especially towards the end of the Fall semesters with all the Christmas concerts (and final exams!).  So, since we were required to take five semesters of Large Ensembles, I took my final Choir "class" during summer session - four weeks, one concert. Easy peasy!

I once tried to row my boat ashore, but it sank before I could get there.
The whole song lyric is silly, if you ask me.  Boats row a lot easier when they're in the water.  Rowing your boat while it's still ashore just dings up the oars.

DR Elmore, is it possible that "great" just means "large"?

It's possible; I'm large.

In the case of Mozart and Schubert, I don't think so, primarily because we're dealing with a classical orchestra of (usually) 8 winds, 4 horns, 2 trumpets. 2 trombones, timpani and strings, around 40 players, as opposed to a Wagnerian or late romantic orchestra of 12 winds, 4-8 horns, 2-4 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, 1-2 harps,  2-3 percussion, timpani, and strings.  I think Strauss' SALOME calls for 105 players!

I think the "Great" is a nomenclature from some 19th-Century critic like Hanslick.

Extra prize for worst subject: Gym

If people have two of the three Nudie connections in The Girl Most Likely To... I've already warned that the third will be near impossible and require a keen memory of one particular scene or, more likely, a VIEWING of that particular scene, and then you'll have to have a keen memory of one particular scene in Nudie to make the connection, and that will only happen if you're feeling particularly keen.

Les did forward the email to me but I was unavailable (I apologize for not responding). If Les didn't come, there was a good reason. I did, however, give Mr. Kimmel some ink in the Cabaret West Member Newsletter. Here it is verbatim:

BRUCE KIMMEL has just issued two of his musicals from the late '70s/early '80s on his new recording label called Kritzerland. Both musicals--Stages and Together Again--are available on one CD. Purchase it at www.kritzerland.com. Bruce, with over 103 albums to his credit, is one of the leading producers of theater music on CD. He created the critically acclaimed Lost in Boston and Unsung Musicals series, solo albums by many of today's theatre performers, as well as numerous off-Broadway and Broadway cast albums. Yesterday, der B and I spent my day off taking care of the grandlads.  The out-of-stepdaughter and her husband had a party to attend that night, so der B and I had plenty of time to corrupt the young minds.

We started with a ride up to the Borders in Newark, DE.  Nice thing about DE, there's no sales tax, which helped with the final bill.  While I found a couple of cooking-centric books (a bio of Careme and Best Food Writing 2005), der B took the lads to the children's section.  There's this whole series of books that Alex likes called "The Magic Treehouse," which operates like a TARDIS and whisks the kid heros to all sorts of places of historical interest.  William needed to be escorted to the boys room, and by the time he and der Grampa got back Alex had already picked out nearly a dozen books that he wanted.  What was interesting was that Alex had not picked out the stories themselves; he wanted the study guides that go with the stories, non-fiction for kids.  It's a direction der G's been wanting to take him, and the lad started in that direction all on his own.

(William, meanwhile, found one of the original Frog and Toad books, and was quite happy.)

Then we were off to the movies.  Alex was not interested in seeing Corpse Bride, declaring it "creepy" (but I think he picked that up from his mother, who habitually condemns all sorts of things from the scantest information).  Instead, we saw Wallace and Gromitt: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.  We all laughed ourselves silly.  This is not a kid's film - it's an everyone's film.

Finally, we had dinner at a pizza parlor.  We all took books with us, and the waitress was thrilled to see us all reading (I'd located a copy of Cinefex for der B).  And after eating, we headed back home, put the lads to bed (it was way past their bedtime), and waited for the OOS and her hubby to return.

All and all, a better day than I had expected.

DR Jason mentioned that suspected date of the suspected terrorist attack is supposed to be tomorrow.  I've been trying to track down more news about it over the past couple of minutes, but most of the news sites are concentrating on the horrible earthquake - and subsequent death toll - in Pakistan (which is understandable), and the Yankees in the playoffs (which is only sort of understandable, but not really).  So...

DR SWW - After my own viewing of "Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride", I'd say you made a better choice with "Wallace and Gromit".   I suspect the grandlads would have gotten very restless during "Corpse Bride" - the pacing is just plain slow at times.

Gym class was actually sort of fun at the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School.  My friend Joe and I would basically hang out in the weights and supplies room, talking about theater and movies, all the while lifting VERY light weights in a lackadaisical (sp?) fashion, intensifying our light weight workout whenever the gym teacher (Mr. Glazer) would come into the room.  Once in a while, Mr. Glazer would insist that we needed to do a little more active work, so we'd get out into the gym proper and play a pathetic game or two of handball (no jokes, please) and then back to Musical Theater Discussions and weight training.

Luckily, gym was Pass/Fail, and the only way to fail was by not showing up and changing into your gym clothes, so no grades to worry about.

And you will adore the cute, blonde, Barbara Wilkins in THE FLESH EATERS.

Best subject were always English (especially when it was literature classes) and history.

Worst were maths and sciences...I was smart enough to be in Advanced Algebra  and things like Geometry, but in the latter got low "b's" and "C" and one time pulled a "D" in Advanced Algebra II...since then I have never had to use a sine or a co-sine and couldn't even tell you what they were or if I spelled them right.

In college, Astronomy was the killer for me...any science that required a dollop of math and I was gone.  I passed, but by the skin of my buns.

I was also rather miserable in any foreign language...French in High School; German in College.  I can read and decipher a smattering of both, but can't speak either nor understand them when they are spoken to me.

My last two years of college when I was taking nothing but Literature and Theatre classes, I made a four point.

As with DR CP:  Favorite classes in ALL grades, English (Lit) & History.  Literature always included some drama, and it was in those classes that I first read THE MIRACLE WORKER and THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK.

Did terrible in ALL math classes.  PE was okay when we played sports that I liked....but I didn't like basketball (a B/D reference).  I liked running and volleyball and dodgeball and gymnastics.

Afternoon, all...

Larry, Jose, FJL & Jane: I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass on Artie's after all. I just called the bank to find out my balance. The prospects were bleak. I'm sorry to miss it. Please pass my regrets on to DR Jane and wish her a safe trip home on my behalf.

TOD: My Spanish teacher in high school called me a prodigy. I picked up the language faster than any other student she'd ever had. In fact, I started college as a Spanish/French double major until I got my scholarship for Voice. I also excelled in Stage Makeup (go figure) and Geography. At one point I also wanted to be a cartographer. I did very well in my Desktop Publishing class, as well. Anything that required creativity as opposed to regurgitation of information was for me.

Worst subjects: P.E. I hated it. In fact, in middle school, I took a job washing dishes in the cafeteria to get out of gym. Hehe... I hated World Civ, mainly because the professor was SO boring, and I hated, hated, hated my Forms and Composition class my senior year of college. Again - just too boring.

MGM's DVD full frame transfer of THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA was very frustrating. Some scenes were gorgeous to look at, very sharp with excellent color (photographed by Jack Cardiff). Other scenes seemed grainier than they needed to be. And much of it was only average in sharpness.

I hadn't seen the film in quite a few years, and I had forgotten how similar in construction to ALL ABOUT EVE it is (scripted and directed by the same man naturally). But the central story isn't as fascinating as ALL ABOUT EVE, and the movie is good without being great. Ava's Spanish accent comes and goes. I can see why Edmond O'Brian won the Oscar. His is the most memorable character in the film other than the title character.

NIGHT STALKER had an interesting episode where Kolchack was actually almost an instrument in a murder. You could see where it was going near the end, so the suspense was not what it could have been, but all in all, I did enjoy it.

Stuart Townsend is pretty to look at, but he doesn't have much emotional weight as Kolchack. (Easy to see why Peter Jackson replaced him in THE LORD OF THE RINGS saga with Viggo Mortensen.)

Ok, TOD -
My favorite classes were English and History. I was good at math, but didn't really like it and calculus bored me to death. I mean really, imaginary number?!?!? Why on earth do I need to know about imaginary numbers.  I had a really fun Radio/TV class in college, and I loved my college music classes (I started as a flute performance major)

I hated PE. So much so that when we were playing outdoor sports I would put on my gym suit and then go down the hall as the class went outside and hide in the band room until class was over. Well, it really wasn't hiding, our band director didn't care at all and the PE teacher was my neighbor who looked the other way as long as I was there when she took attendance.

No question my worst subjects were math and shop. The last math class I took was 10th grade algebra. I loathe despise and abominat math classes, although shop was the real downfall. The only class I ever failed was drafting and I still hold a grudge against the b***hole teacher who said you would not fail if you did your best. LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE. I never grasped the concept and even with help could not understand it. I failed miserably and I hope there is a special place in Hell for the gym teacher (former Marine b***hole) and the drafting teacher in my high school who were hateful, macho toads. Rant over.

I took a BFA degree at University so I had very little outside the theatre department. I had to take a science so I took Geology. I did not do well and did not like the class.

My favorite classes were English, Speech and Drama in High School and most of my theatre classes in college. I didn't enjoy the tech classes (I am not remotely artistic in that sense). I didn't want to, nor could I, design costumes, sets or lights even remotely well. I was an actor. I wanted to act. I loved the tech people. I made friends with them and got along with them wonderfully. I didn't want to be them, nor they me. I also did not like directing class. I think I'm in a very small minorty of actors who never wanted to direct anything. Again, I was an actor. I wanted to work on my part. That's it. That's what made me happy.

Topic of the Day:  I hated PE!  When I was in middle school, we could waive a semester of PE if we took an art or music class of some sort.  I took choir and it turned me into a music person.  In high school, I ended up having to take only one semester of PE during the whole four years!  And I never took a foreign language.  I don't know how any of that happened, but I graduated with no problem.

I took choirs all through high school...both Concert and Show for all four years, and I added the non-audition choir for the last semester of my senior year.

Algebra was the bane of my existence...and math in general.  I took algebra for two years and for all four semesters, I got Ds.  Fortunately, my choir classes (all As) balanced everything out.

Well, AltaVista's Babel Fish Translation (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) page doesn't have Romanian as a language option, but the letters looked Russian...and they are!  They translated easily...if not accurately. ;) I don't remember what the Russian site was about, but here are the translations:

In the beginning of the seventieth is annual the twentieth century "political climate" in America it were weakened so, that in the large cities (such as New York or Los Angeles, for example) slowly began to appear and even to give printed advertisement the first porno- cinemas. At first there showed films with a large quantity of exposed "actresses" and the simulation of sexual reports sufficiently inoffensive on the present measures, but nearer to the eightieth people was already "radiated" so, that into the rental went valuable hardcore-porno. Softcore'nye the films of the beginning of the seventieth were often characterized by the madly wild names (type "I it ended to the bus";)) and by the cheapness of the production, when as the commonplace it was considered not to stop the working camera, even if "actor" turns himself to the director for the council - dispatch all these moments without any installation into the finished film, since retake or serious assembly period cost money, but why to expend the money, when people then brings down to look to naked telesa of starletok (but "subject" and the quality of "game" this public clearly they do not interest). After being seen enough similar "masterpieces", young and talented akter/kompozitor/stsenarist Bruce kimmel it planned to make a parody to this cinema, after removing "porno- musical". It described about this idea to some its friends, who immediately arrived into the ecstasy and they began together with it to work at the realization of project. In the course of preparatory period, however, the concept of film gradually evolved, and instead of the real "softporno- musical" the authors decided to make "film about the film", "obstebav" not only genre porno, but also low-budgetary cinema together with the pathos-arousing brodveyskimi musicals:)

Paragraph Two:

The young owner of small paternal motion picture studio, Garry shekter, is located on the face of crash. His last pictures did not enjoy success, money he does not have, but investors press and is established condition - "either you bring to us gold-bearing idea or we for the debts select in you studio and is constructed at her place large commercial center". In similar extreme situations the brain of man works especially intensively, and grandiose idea shaded Garry - it is necessary to remove porno- musical! Investors did not at first voice large enthusiasm, but young person in the paints and the details painted by it, as noticeably everything in it will come out and what immense success this project awaits - indeed this there will be the first film of this type! After consulting, starikany agreed to give to young fellow last chance, but immediately were placed the draconic conditions: the first - half of money they invest, and they give half to fellow into the debt; the second - director must be nephew of one of the investors; and the third - entire film must be taken in two weeks, and not it is in the daytime more! Selection Garry not had, and it agreed. And from this point on, obviously, begins the most interesting. To the hearing it appeared more than different coat public, by "director" proved to be that complexed of dvadtsatitrekhletniy of devstvennik, and music and songs for the "picture" were written by aged negro directly on surveying area... What came out from entire this disgrace - you look the film:)
Title: Re:150,000 POSTS
Post by: George on October 09, 2005, 02:27:11 PM
Paragraph Three:

It is necessary to give credit to the talent of Bruce kimmel - in fact, it only extended on itself entire picture, and it boldly it is possible to compare with another young gift of that time - By melom by Brooks, in seven years thus far placed immense comedy on the similar theme by the name "producers" (The Producers (1968)). Bruce, as Brooks, not only wrote outstanding scenario and he became the to- director of picture, but also magnificently played the role "of director -devstvennika" John smiti (surname Smithee it must much say to amateurs and experts of cinematography...;)), and it also wrote entire music and songs to the picture (here already truly - man of many-sided talents),! Because of the efforts Of kimmela, the film came out very ridiculous, extraordinarily entertaining and it excellently parodied many "behind the scene" moments of the entertainment industries, inaccessible to the view of usual spectator. Especially strongly it was reached, certainly, to the process of the production of low-budgetary pictures, about which by hearsay he did not know Kimmel, since itself removed the low-budgetary picture (producer it initially allocated only of 125 thousand dollars):) "as to become director?" - it is necessary altogether to only be nephew or son of one of the producers. "where to find artists?" - give declaration into the newspapers, and at the doors of studio will very soon stand the different coat crowd, in which it is possible to meet and beginning pornozvezd, and modest shy girls from the province with the large dream "to subjugate Hollywood". "where to find composer?" - it is necessary simply to ring its old friend and to ask him to write music for the film, that it will make directly on surveying area in the interruptions between the doubles. "as to calm the raged on area" star "? - nothing complex, it is simple to otvet' by reciprocity to its solicitations:) "what to make, if" director "- dvadtsatitrekhletniy of devstvennik, which nothing knows about the cinematography generally and the process of the production of films in particular?" - to try so that it would conduct as less than the time on area, as possible more frequently send it into the store after the dumplings, and when dumplings will covered entire studio - show out it to the "copying of scenario" into the public house... "I finally, that to make, when in the hearts you discharged capricious" star "in the last day of surveys, and it is necessary to remove still several important scenes" - this simplest, leave because of the camera and make entire itself, indeed you already in this business very long ago and know the routine...;)

Paragraph Four:

As you see, to remove low-budgetary cinema complex, but since you already became acquainted with the answers to the majority of production questions, then can boldly take up the creation of your own masterpieces, indeed, after all, the same so is gay! And actually, film came out very merry and fervid, with an enormous quantity of obnazhenki and the super-musical numbers, type "Lesbian, Butch, Dyke", "Orgasm", "Perversion" and, it is certain, shedevral'nym "Dancing Dildos"! :) At least only for one "Dancing Dildos" this film already is worth looking, and indeed besides this number there there is still much what interesting...;)
Title: Re:150,000 POSTS
Post by: George on October 09, 2005, 02:27:48 PM
Paragraph Five:

In spite of its obvious creative success, the rolling fate of picture was added sufficiently complex. Even during the production of film was signed agreement with studio Paramount to wide reliz of tape in the states. During the production and the installation the studio was very contented by result, but... here burst out thunder among the clear sky - one of the basic stars of picture, Sindi Williams, it began to be removed in the popular "family" television series Paramount Networks "Laverne & Shirley", and studio solved, that its participation in "The First Nudie Musical" negative will affect the ratings of series and on the image of paramount itself. Trying as peace history, in reality, but it does not cease to astonish. However, simply so "to get rid" of the picture studio not could - since it had to fulfill contractual obligations on the rental and distributions of film. As a result - Paramount went "to the craftiness" - without any press- demonstrations (so that not there would be reviews in the press, it understands) and the advertisements film they released on the screens of the provincial small towns of America, without having released picture into the large cities and the large populated areas. However, even during this "distribution" film they noted, and tape began to bring to the rollers of money. But here was agitated Bruce kimel, who appeared in the press with the open turning to management Paramount and required normal rotation with his creation, especially as public was clearly in the enthusiasm from the picture. Ended this all by the fact that Paramount sold rights to the film conversely to the authors, thus after getting rid of the "undesirable" picture in its catalog and after making possible To kimelu to make with the tape everything that it will wish. But it wished to find another distrib'yutora, which soon and organized the worthy advertising and rolling company of film in the states. And this, it goes without saying, it gave its fruits, since picture not only in the course of THREE MONTHS successfully went in the cinemas of New York, but also several weeks entered into national charty of boxing- office on the fifth position (!), after proving to be in the company of such mastodons of rental as "Star Wars" and "The Spy Who Loved Me".

Paragraph Six (I love the last line ;):

The audience success of picture was present and caused it, certainly, by the fact that the film is actually very amusing and is ridiculous, is working and as ingenious comedy, and as successful parody to porno, musicals and film production as a whole. Sufficiently expected became the fact that in the course of time the film acquired steadfast cult status and mass of new worshippers, who saw picture already on video. Everything, who loves exceptionally successful parodies, ridiculous comedies, on top of that and away not to look to many exposed female teles - good to grant on "The First Nudie Musical"! Parents, remove from the screen of children...;)

All of the above is, of course, complete and utter horse pucky.  West Side Story is a piece of musical theater, not a work of non-fiction.  And, depending on one's definition of leading players, I believe Jose de Vega (movie Chino and a significant role) would be Latino, as would Sharks Jaime Rogers and Rudy del Campo.

The stage version also had Latinos other than Chita Rivera, including Erne Castaldo, Carmen Gutierrez, and Jaime Sanchez.

If anyone has XM radio, Rupert is going to be on with Bob Edwards for a full hour this Thursday at 8:00AM Eastern time. I think it's channel 133 - or whatever XM Public Radio is. If you don't have XM you can get it from Audible.com. It's $2.95 or there may be a way to get it free as a promotion if you don't already have an Audible.com account.

Greetings, All!  I have returned home after my glorious time in New York with the HHW gathering and my fruitful conference in Atlanta at the Foundation Center.  Thanks to Danise for posting the other day that I'd called her.  I had no internet access while in Atlanta - the only thing I did not like about my hotel (Residence Inn Downtown).

Having read quickly through the many posts that accumulated while I was away, here are some responses:

Belated Happy Birthday to DR JMK!

Welcome back to DR PennyO - I've missed you and was glad to see that you've been posting.

Congratulations on milestones achieved.

Thank you for all the photos of both the NYC and the West Coast HHW gatherings.  I'll contribute some later.

Special thanks to DR Jose for the wonderful tour on Wednesday and to DRs Ben and FJL for opening their home environments to us on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.

Now I have to unpack and get ready for a killer work week  :P

We are back from the pumpkin patch and the extremely muddy (and I do mean extremely) "corn maize".  (Yes they are quite clever, aren't they?).

Well, I believe the electronic hat has stiffed me again prize-wise, so I will submit my own trivia question for which I already know the answers  ;D.  Maybe one or two of you will have fun figuring this one out:

In a celebrated theatrical season this play was expected to be a major hit, yet it lasted barely a few weeks on Broadway.  The cast reunited several stars, featured players and production crew from one of the biggest hits Broadway had seen from a season previous to this play.  Its director would soon become controversial.  The play's author would become famous in a field completely unrelated to show business.  Bonus points:  While touring pre-Broadway, this play had an alternate title and an extremely unusual billing situation.

Though the play was not successful on Broadway, it was filmed a few years later in a highly regarded production.  This production used none of the Broadway cast, but featured several stellar and well-known performers.  One of these stars was quite famous in their day but is now known chiefly for their relatives. Another star, if remembered today at all, is remembered chiefly for being married to a screen legend.  Another performer, just starting out, would one day be a costar in one of the best-remembered and most unique television series of all time.  And a bit player would go on to amass a highly respectable resume, despite having the same name of one of the best known movie stars of all time.

Name the play.
Name at least two of the stars and the previous hit they were in together.
Name the director and the controversy.
Name the author and his claim to fame outside of show business.
Name the play's touring title and its unusual billing situation.

Name the film star known chiefly for their relatives.
Name the film star known chiefly for being married to a screen legend, and name the legend.
Name the performer who would go on to costar in a unique tv series, and name the series.
Name the bit player.

 ;D

It's been a running joke in our family for years--we had a purebred Collie named Ethel and of course when other kids saw her, they'd exclaim, "It's Lassie, it's Lassie!"  Of course whenever our kids saw Lassie on t.v., they'd exclaim, "It's Ethel, it's Ethel!"   ;)

Hey! (narcisist that I am...) I just googled my name to see if there have been any new or old-but-somehow-missed reviews of the play and/or book -- nope -- but!!! I found a pirate recording of my Frasquita opposite the Carmen of Victoria de los Angeles at City Opera back in 1979!! So of course I went online and ordered it immediately! Now i gotta wait about 4 weeks to hear it. That was a heartrending performance:

Sills had talked de los Angeles into a sort of comeback season at NYCO that fall, as the Countess in Figaro and Carmen... the Carmen was first. She never sang out in rehearsal, except for brief phrases that were awesomely lovely.

The place was - predictably - sold out for the first performance, The audience greeted her entrance with five minutes of cheers. But. Her knees were shot, so she hobbled about the stage in an attempt to do the staging that (the director, may she rest in peace) hadn't sense enough to change; Madame's breath just wasn't there, not to mention that the sheer length and difficulty of that role were way beyond her stamina. She was in her sixties, fa' chrissakes... I helped her off the stage at the end of the Smugglers ensemble in Act 3. She cancelled further performances, and Joy Davidson took over the role. But I had a very good night, (Charlie Wilson always let me hold the high C at the end of Toreador until all the chorus sopranos had dropped out,) and I had always wondered if there were any sort of pirate recording. Huzzah! I'm so stoked! Can't wait!!!

Yes, BK, I got my wonderful sparkling prize from the contest I won several times ago.  But I then won again two weeks ago (?) ("Nowhere to Go But Up").  That is the errant and truant prize to which I am referring.

However, if you answer my trivia question then I will of course owe you a sparkling prize.   :D

Well I am back from Miami area (really Coral Gables) where I saw Karen Morrow and Susan Egan. This is the first them both perform live in concert, although I did see Susan Egan in the touof Bye Bye Birdie with Tommy Tune and Anne Reinking in Boston. I drove down from Montreal just to see it. I remember Tommy Tune more than I did her.

But both of them are excellent performers and singers. Karen Morrow can still best them out with the best them. Susan Egan is even better in person. I enjoy listening to all her cd work, but there is something extra about her voice when you hear it live.

After the show she met with the audience and signed autographs. She sold one of her cds (Coffee House) and she sold a lot of them. I asked to take a photo of her and she insisted that we take it together. (We did)

I had her sign her three solo cds and the cast albums Beauty and the Beast and Drat! The Cat. Some wise acre in the crowd said that they were going to be on ebay tonight. She said she didn't mind it and I said that is something I don't so and I keep them for myself.

I also met with Karen Morrow and she signed both version of The Grass Harp for me and I took a solo photo of her.

A most enjoyable evening. I am beginning to enjoy these cabaret nights more than going to see a full length musical.

Next up in two weeks is Miss Liz Callaway. I have seen her about four time in concert and enjoy her singing each and every time.

She will be in Palm Beach at the Colony Hotel.

JMK, if you won and sent me your address, then a prize was sent and is lost in the mail.  I'm quite sick of the USPS, I must say.  And they just don't care.  If you pay the forty cents for delivery confirmation, THEN things get there, but I tend not to do that on the sparkling prizes, which I usually send first class rather than priority - if the package is less than a half-inch, you can't use delivery confirmation.  It's pretty shameful.  So, send the address again and I'll find another sparkling prize.

To answer you, and TCB from yesterday:

WSS has come under considerable criticism - more political than artistic.

It has reviled for glamorizing gangs been boycotted as "racist", and there was quite a stink when a school on Amherst MA cancelled a production because its depiction of Puerto Ricans was "offensive". Criticism has also been about its lack of authentic Latino casting. One article notes:der Brucer

Guess you're still looking for a new editor.

Jose I am glad you enjoyed your hostess gift,  were you truly suprised? I was afraid you'd notice all the whispering and scheming in ranks as you led us through the streets.

YES!  I was truly surprised!  And it's VERY hard to surprise me since I tend to be very mother-hen-ish, and I'm always paying attention to what's going on around me.  -A residual side effect from all my years working with kids.  I'm also usually a "planner" when it comes to surprise gifts, parties, etc., and, I have to say, I'm quite good at it.

When I opened the envelope at La Cocina, I thought, "Oh, cool - I really like those vintage musical instrument cards!"  And then I when opened the other envelope inside the envelope... Well... WOW!

Score one for all of you!!

Between all the foodstuffs and all the walking we endured during the Walk-And-Stuff-Yourselves-Silly Tour, "When you were living" seems apropos.

Ginny, I've put the dates in my calendar! Since it's early October, I'll be there on the same Saturday as you. I'll be on the 3rd Floor and you'll be on the 2nd Floor.

This year for the first time in many years we are closed tomorrow. Hoo and Ray. It's been a wonderful, fun and exciting week but it will be nice to sleep in tomorrow morning.

We had a great night at Artie's with the gang. Anthony was very glad to finally meet Jane. Good food and good friends (it sounds like a commercial).

Must do some shopping tomorrow since the freezer is newly defrosted. That's what we did today. Anthony put together a book of miniature pictures to show Jane and I defrosted the freezer.

Ginny, I'm glad you and Jason and Jose and Michael and Danise could come see our "two-room palace". Anthony was very glad to see you also.

My body is screaming "go to bed" at someone.

I think it's screaming that phrase at me.

Wussburger, with grated Parmesan.

My workday will end about 3pm that Saturday.  Wanna do something after work?  ;D

I was glad to have a chance to visit with Anthony, too.

Tomorrow is not a day off for me, so I'm going to turn in.  Enjoy your day, Ben, and any other DRs who do have a holiday tomorrow.

I am not sure that Artie's would appreciate you marking the time you spent at their deli as when you were living, and when you weren't.

Guess I need a better editor too.

BK:  I just like teasing the Electronic Hat, you must know that.  Keep the sparkling prize and give it to a needy actor-type (OK, there's an opening if ever there was one.  ;)).   I have learned over the years that the Electronic Hat is fickle in its delivery, try as it may to put the blame on Mame and/or the USPS.   ;)  Oh, yes, this is not the first time, nor will it be the last (unless of course I have no clew as to how to answer the trivia question).

However, I can tell you you can indeed get delivery confirmation for any size package and/or letter.  I do it all the time.  The weird thing is they charge you more for delivery confirmation if you ship third class (media mail) than for first or priority.

That's not what they've told me - they've told me that the package has to be a certain thickness to get delivery confirmation.  I'll ask again tomorrow.

Don't know how I missed Jane's post, but sometimes such things happen here at haineshisway.com, if posts cross, i.e. I'm posting while she's posting.

Thanks to DR George for the West Coast version of WILL & GRACE's live premiere show. I watched it tonight.

Some observations:

1. The audience for the West Coast broadcast was MUCH more responsive to the jokes and silliness than the audience that saw the East Coast telecast. Quicker to get the jokes and laughed longer and with more gusto at them.

2. Eric McCormack was given two new punch lines to replace earlier ones and an added punch line tacked on to the end of another joke. He handled all of the changes to perfection.

3. Alec Baldwin was much less sharp on the West Coast broadcast. He left out a joke and had a couple of line flubs.

4. Debra Messing was a bit more in control during the West Coast telecast with fewer examples of losing focus and dropping character.

5. Sean Hayes teetered on the edge of breaking up even more on the second telecast. And, as had been reported earlier, he also got tongue tied at one point which didn't happen during the first show.

6. Megan Mullalley gave the same spot-on performance on both telecasts. I didn't catch her dropping a single line or ever breaking character. And when Alec Baldwin left out a joke that involved her, she proceeded right on with the show effortlessly. And she did all of this on a mechanized wheelchair for the entire show.

Evenin', all.

I am so sorry I wasn't able to make Artie's tonight. My finances just would/could not allow for it, I'm afraid. I received a loverly phone message from one of the HHW gang (I won't mention any names) who offered to BUY my dinner tonight, but alas - I didn't receive the message until after 7:00. :( So tonight was spent cleaning the fridge, watching the two TV shows I watch regularly and watching a few old movies. This new tradition of classic movies in Chelsea on Thursday nights has turned me on to pictures that I've not yet seen. Today I watched "The Little Foxes" and "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" for the first time. Good fun.

COLD CASE presented another heartrending episode and one which contained not only the surprise identity of the murderer (and the reason for committing the crime) but even the identity of the murder victim early in the show surprised me.

Enjoyed DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and laughed quite a few times. I guess it IS a comedy series just as it wasd designated at the Emmys!

Broadway regulars Roger Bart and Harriet Harris had some terrific scenes tonight.

CROSSING JORDAN had a rather standard cave-in melodrama tonight with no surprises or much suspense.

It was nice to see j p pitoc from TRICK as a guest star/murder suspect.

Bruce-LOVED IT!!!

Very, very funny and it was a special treat for all of us.  My friend got a big kick out of Mr. & Mrs. Travolta sitting down the row from us.  And a bigger kick out of watching the crowd watch them. ;D

Thank you for making the evening possible. :D

I loved it, too, DR Jane. So glad you enjoyed it. Is Alan Tudyck still subbing for Hank Azaria or is he back now? Alan had a surprisingly muscular physique in the scene where he took off his shirt. That REALLY got my attention. I've seen him in lots of things, but for some reason had never paid much attention to his build until that moment.

Back from Artie's...

Another lively and sparkling time.  Those gathered around the table tonight included DR FJL, Anthony, Jane, elmore, Ben and myself.   Lots of food.  Lots of conversation.  Lots of fun.

Now that I have met all the wonderful NY HHWers, I am going to be envious each time you all get togethor for anything...I honestly miss all of you already! I have made so many great new buddies!

DR Matt - Not to pick nits, but I assume you're referring to the picture of MBarnum and Freddy, as opposed to MBarnum and Freddie, right?

(Since most people at work call me Freddie, I wouldn't want to confuse them if they're reading this.  :) )

So glad to have experienced Artie's with Jane, Elmore, Jose, and Ben and Anthony.  Loved the noodle kugel and the latkes, so-so on the matzoh brei, greatly enjoyed the company.  So nice to meet Anthony and to see all the others again.  Thanks to elmore for arranging it.

This is nauseating - no posts in over an hour.  Skammen.  I mean, Ann was sitting here like so much fish, and then just up and leaves without posting.  What is THAT about?  And she was not alone.  No one is alone.
