So glad you got the REVUE that is written so warmly about in the Kritzer books.  Isn't wonderful to make a discovery like that?!

Satire....hmmmmmm.....

I think Steve Allen, although I'm not sure what he did was satire. (And sorry to hear about Mr Louis Nye, I posted about him just last week).

Mad Magazine was great at satire.

I guess my FAVORITE would be Nichols & May.  Although they may have been iconoclasts.

I know getting to go in dress-down is a good thing, but with all the tension and arguing in the office yesterday, it almost felt like a warning at first.  :)

It’s the final performance of the classic Brit revue, Beyond the Fringe, starring Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett, and Jonathan Miller

Is this a DVD commercialy available and playable in the US?  This is exactly the sort of thing that would make a wonderful Christmas present for my inlaws.

This is the most intense work week of the year at my office.  Even worse than April 15th, because at April 15th you can at least put a client on extension if they bring their stuff in two or three days before the deadline.  But this is the final extension, so even people who get the last piece of their tax  stuff to us this coming Friday or Saturday will magically get their returns by Monday, or so the firm philosophy goes.  (Will it be correct?  Will we have time to do any good retrospective tax planning for these procrastinators?  Who knows - but they'll make the deadline, and we'll possibly have to amend later.)  And this year, Yom Kippur falls right in the middle of Hell week, which hasn't happened in forever.

Just thought I'd share.

Someone almost always walks off to blow off steam in our office during the first weeks of October, but they always come back.  It's an office tradition.  Yesterday, one of the ladies left early, and several people thought that was this year's walk-out, but we later confirmed that she was just going for a physical.  So this year's walk-off is still to come.

Seriously, 90% of the time, I feel so lucky to be working where I am.  But oh, those four weeks a year!

Good Morning Larry.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

For a moment, when I read the post and then moved down to the next post I thought it was Time Winters who had died. Small world moment, I haven't seen him in years and I know that he wouldn't remember me but I met Time in the early 80s when he was in New York. He was friends with other friends of mine. I became part of a group of actors who decided to read, every Monday evening, all of Shakespeare's plays, one by one. Stephen, the man in charge, would see who was available for each week and cast according to who would be there on a certain Monday. It was great fun and if you were there every week you got to hear all of Shakespeare! Time was part of that group. It was great fun and something I would do again in a moment.

FJL, don't worry about the "ranting". That was a very quiet rant compared to others we have heard. We all need to rant sometimes.

We had a quiet weekend, staying in most of the time, except for the sojourn out for Dinner with Jane (that's the title of my next novel). We did do some grocery shopping yesterday afternoon. I defrosted the freezer on Sunday and the refrigerator was practically empty so we needed foodstuffs to get us through the week. I will buy more foodstuffs at the Greenmarket tomorrow.

Tonight I am part of consumer panel gathered together to answer questions about on-line banking and credit cards. It's sponsored by Citibank. I get $100 and a "light dinner" (probably sandwiches and soda) for answering questions for 2 hours (5:30-7:30). Anthony will have to make his own dinner tonight. He also plans on watching Mystery (it's Foyle's War) on Channel 21. He missed it on Sunday night. We got back from dinner and forgot that it was on. Oh, well. That's what reruns are for.

Back to work!

Later, gaters.

Good morning, all!  Tuesday already?  Oy!

It's a heavy day of Chicago Humanities Festival work, so I'm out of here very shortly.  I want to thank all of you for your kind words on the death of my friend.  I wish my mind was as sharp now as his was at 93; he had great recall and a kind heart.  He also has a wonderful son. as well as a daughter I do not know, and a beautiful granddaughter who's now doing well as an actress.  I will miss him.

So, the TOD is satire:
Theatre:  OF THEE I SING, OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR!, THE BEGGAR'S OPERA
Music:  CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS. the G&S operas, THE LOVE OF THREE ORANGES
TV & Other Media:  Mad Magazine, National Lampoon, MAD TV, A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, COLD COMFORT FARM, NORTHANGER ABBEY

I have to agree with Tom Leherer. Love the guy.

I cannot stand to watch most comedians these days with all the 4 letter words they use. It is not necessary. So I am not sure if they are satirical or not.

But I would like to have seen Mort Sahl  and Lenny Bruce in person. Now I know Bruce use 4 letter words and was probably the first main stream comic to do. But he used them IMHO brilliantly. Mort Sahl was from Montreal and believe it or not never saw him ever do anything. Just heard about him.

SNL was never a fav of mine. The jabs may have had a good joke or two but I always found that the sketches just ended just like so much fish. They never had one great topper joke. (I don't mean the guy with ghosts)

The comedian I find just funny these days is Pablo Francisco.

The comedian I find who has the most to say through her comedy (despite the 4 letters) is Margaret Cho. She is the one exception when it comes to comedians and the barrages of 4 letter words

I would like to add Mad Magazine (who my cousin once wrote for). The 60's & & 70's was IMHO there best time. I now look at it with its color pages, ads and governed by what they have to do (and maybe say) by Warner Bros. Communications.

They even have to do Movie Parodies as film tie ins with the release of certain key Warner Bros. Releases/

I actually bought MAD magazine by accident. It was the Batman (TV series parody) cover and I thought I was getting a batman comic!

What a nice surprise.

I have all the issues and extras of Mad magazine from the start to  the 90's when they released the cd-rom of the mags

Two other deaths I heard about this weekend that saddened me--Jerry Juhl, who has been the head writer for the Muppets almost since their inception, and M Scott Peck, the author of one of my favorite books, The Road Less Travelled.  One man entertained me, the other enlightened me.  And I'm the better for both.

I don't generally believe in signs, but I think I've had a couple today. First off, the alarm on my cell phone went off, but my alarm clock didn't. Why, you ask? Because the electricity went out overnight. I hate when that happens. Thank God I set the alarm on my phone.

Then, I got to the subway station only to find out that the train is/was not running! Everyone was walking a few blocks down to the bus, so I followed (one has to get to work) only to find about 350 people waiting for a bus. No thank you!

So, I called in, let them know what's what and now I'm waiting for the train to start running again. In fact, I think I hear it now, but I'm going to wait for a couple more to go by just to make sure my ears aren't deceiving me.

Good morning!

Another cool, overcast, and wet morning. It rained just before I got up, so everything's very damp and soggy from the five days of rain we've had. None of the rain has been really heavy, so flooding has not been a problem, and it's good it's been like that so the ground could soak up the much needed moisture.

But enough already with the rain!

TOD:

Yes, MAD Magazine was always a favorite. I was introduced to it with their WEST SIDE STORY parody "East Side Story," and fell in love with it ever since. With their movie and TV parodies, often using songs from musicals that you could sing along with to their new lyrics, I never tired of them.

Monty Python's Flying Circus became my favorite satirical show as an adult.

ROCKY & BULLWINKLE as a child fulfilled a similar role in laughing at government and TV and many other things.

Yes, thanks for mentioning ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN. The Smothers Brothers also began using satire in their act a lot more as the 60s progressed.

Just a little heads up for DVD collectors.

Deep Discount and DVD Empire are both having sales right now.

Deep Discount is a Buy 2 - Get 1 free sale chosen from a list of selected DVDs. I glanced at the list, and they look like the same discs they offered for sale this past summer.

DVD Empire's sale is on 90 horror-themed DVDs: Buy two for $14.95. I found 4 that I wanted and didn't already have, and if you buy 3, you get free shipping.

Just wanted to keep folks informed. I am not a shill for either company.  :)

I watched MEDIUM last night (i'll be vague), and it was another fresh episode.  I like how they are continually trying new things this season.

Last night's episode was sort of "scary" again (in that i couldn't figure out where it was heading).

The only thing that has been sort of bothering me is how the story is nowhere near its conclusion by 9:50pm.  They show a last commercial and then they keep having to wrap it up so quickly.  I wish that maybe they would give us less mystery and more conclusion. Because every time I see that last commercial break I wonder how on earth they will conclude in the few minutes that are left.

DR MATTH mentioned Sidney Lumet - I think his New York theatre film STAGE STRUCK is going to be among those TCM will be showing this month.  It's not a good film....certainly I don't think it's a very true picture of real theatre....and Susan Strasberg is surprisingly, painfully bad - BUT I have only seen it on my old video and the print used for the VCI release is terrible.  The previews seem to show it in some sort of widescreen process and in much better shape - fingers crossed!

The link provided by Larry for Darling of the Day ends in an error message. Try this one and you should get there.

You're right, Larry. There are times when he seems to like it but he doesn't say much in the review. It's mostly mush.

Any while you're at that website, poke around and look for the video gallery of Chicago plays.  There are some fun clips there.

This is for Danise... and bird lovers everywhere

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you?  'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We've gained notoriety,
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
With our games.
They call it impiety
And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment,
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strych'nine
We feed to a pigeon.
(It just takes a smidgin!)
To poison a pigeon in the park.

Topic of the Day...

MAD Magazine
The Onion
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Tom Lehrer - Although, my favorite songs of his were the ones written for "The Electric Company" - "Silent e" and "L-Y".
Allan Sherman - Does "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" etc., count?

The PBS station in Richmond would play "Around the Horn" during their late night Sunday blocks.  It was always a nice way to end the day.

and now... a tender love song

I hold your hand in mine, dear,
I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite
From your dainty fingertips.

My joy would be complete, dear,
If you were only here,
But still I keep your hand
As a precious souvenir.

The night you died I cut it off,
I really don't know why.
For now each time I kiss it
I get bloodstains on my tie.

I'm sorry now I killed you,
For our love was something fine,
And till they come to get me
I shall hold your hand in mine.

BK - As another DR mentioned yesterday, you can get Priority Mail Confirmation for any item of mail you send Priority Mail.  There is no thickness requirement or limit.

*And as I quickly learned, you do not need to fill out the whole slip since you get the part of the slip that you filled out.  As long as I have the complete address in another place, I just put the person's name on it before handing it over to the postal clerk to get date stamped.

**And, yes, you can do that all online too.  But you will still have to take the packages to the post office to get them scanned, although in some areas, they can also just be picked up with your daily outgoing mail from your home.  No waiting in line at the post office.

It wasn't too bad being behind me in the post office because everything of mine was completely prepared and it went very fast - about ten minutes for over thirty packages.  What I hate are the people who haven't filled out or boxed anything, who just go to the window completely unprepared.

I haven't tried to do this stuff online yet - I have to peruse it and take my time figuring it all out.

I've been rather E&T the past few days, but will catch up shortly.

Saturday was spent at the theatre, starting off with a matinee of Seussical at Seattle Children's Theatre.  While the show itself is nothing that excites me much, this production was really excellent.  The set was simply stunning, costumes looked terrific (except Horton), and all the performances were wonderful.  High quality all the way around.

Saturday night's show was My Fair Lady featuring our very own TCB.  All in all, I'd have to call this a hit-and-miss production.  Their Eliza is magnificent, a wonderful actress with a beautiful voice, couldn't ask for any more from her.  TCB was indeed, as the reviewer said, wonderfully funny as Pickering.  Heck, his dancing during "The Rain in Spain" alone was worth the ticket price.  The chorus and most other supporting roles were fine, nothing great, nothing bad.  But then there was their Higgins.  I know he was sick that night and all, but... well, Eliza and Pickering were great!  The direction also left some to be desired, but enough good in the show to make it worthwhile.

Sunday was a day of watching football and lazing around the apartment with Ann.  No excuse for being E&T that day, really.

Then there was yesterday.  I spent the day dealing with the wonderful fun of a kidney stone.  Yowza, I had no idea I could hurt quite that much.  Thankfully, I was feeling MUCH better by yesterday evening and all seems to be good now.

Now to catch up on the multitude of posts from the past few days...

Despite it's lacklustre reception on Broadway, Ahrens & Flaherty's SEUSSICAL was the number one selling show in our catalog in the year 2004 with over 300 productions across the country, beating out newer titles such as Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and classics such as GUYS & DOLLS, THE MUSIC MAN and ANNIE.

Question: What would cause the hot water in the home environment to suddenly become MUCH MUCH hotter in the last day or two?  In other words, I've been using the hot water here for over a year and it's always been the same, so I know exactly where to turn the various knobs.  Two days ago I did that and the water was scalding hot, which it's never been before.

Went through the time tunnel this afternoon and watched the 1971 SHAFT.

My memories of it were fairly vague thinking maybe it was some kind of blackploitation film, but it's really just a crime drama with a black leading man. The writing for the character of Shaft impressed me, too, because unlike some of those blackploitation films from the 1970s where all white characters were bad and out to fleece the black characters, SHAFT presents equal opportunity good and bad characters of every ethnicity.

Most surprising was the easygoing relationship Shaft had with a gay bartender (played by Rex Robbins). No putdowns or sneering sarcasm with him. VERY forward-thinking for a 1971 crime drama, especially considering the way gay people are so casually offed in things like FREEBIE AND THE BEAN and THE LAUGHING POLICEMAN just a couple of years later.

I believe you mentioned this several months ago, DR Jason, and I found that so fascinating that it's been THAT popular. (Though I guess ANNIE and OLIVER and other kid-oriented shows have been done to death).

The theater where I did LA CAGE is doing SEUSSICAL later this season, and I wanted to see if there was anything of interest for me in the show. Plus, I've never seen it before and would like to even if I don't feel I'm right for anything in it.

Here's a question I've always wondered about.

Does the money that a show earns on its amateur rights go toward erasing its defecit if the show closed as a flop. For example, INTO THE WOODS' first Broadway production did not quite pay off, but it has to have made lots of money in the years since it became avaialble for licensing to other production companies. Do the investors of the original production share at all in the money INTO THE WOODS makes as a property now?

They only make money off the show once its in release if their lawyers have negotiated a portion of the royalties. I'm looking at a contract for INTO THE WOODS right now. As I count it, there are 9 royalty participants listed, including the producers of the original Broadway production. However, the percentages that Ms. Heidi Landesman makes off the show MIGHT buy her a couple of tanks of gas every year, whereas Mssrs. Sondheim & Lapine can make their living off the royalties of the show.

If a show financially flops on Broadway, I believe they cut their losses and write it off as a tax thing. And unless it's a huge hit, it is to be expected that a show will make more money in the regions and in amateur venues than it will in a commercial run on Broadway.

The most likely answer is the thermostat on the hot water heater is either malfunctioning or got bumped somehow.  It's easy to fix if it got bumped.  Usually the thermostats are at the bottom of the hot water heater (sometimes you need to unscrew a little panel at the bottom to get to them).  They usually look like the old-style dial thermostats.  They should be set at around 140, depending on how hot you like your hot water.  If there's no way the thermostat could have gotten bumped or otherwise adjusted, you're probably going to need a new water heater within a few days.  They're fairly cheap (you can get a good one installed for under $300 if you shop around).

If a show financially flops on Broadway, I believe they cut their losses and write it off as a tax thing.

That's exactly right, as my late Uncle "use Stephen Sondheim for a tax credit" Charlie would tell you.   ;D

I believe so.

As for the popularity of Seussical, it really doesn't surprise me.  The Dr. Seuss books are indeed timeless, and they are still selling quite well today, as well as continuing to be promoted by their publisher.

The Annie franchise seems to be dying it's natural near-death.  Yes, they keep mounting tour after tour, but the whole Little Orphan Annie "property" just isn't as visible as it used to be.  When the show originally came out, it was a great piece of nostalgia for the adults who grew up during the depression and their children (also adults).  Consequently, it became THE role that every young girl wanted to play.  But as the years have gone by - and just how long ago did the original Broadway production open - WOW!?!?! - it's popular popularity has dissapated.

I also think Annie may have reached another saturation point, like all shows do.  Lots and lots of productions, and then just a smattering for a while.  I remember that Into the Woods surge a few years ago, and then there was that onslaught of Annie Get Your Gun production during it's anniversary year - I think they were running a special.  ;)

We shall see what happens with Seussical over the years.

We do tend to have 'runs' on shows. Generally when one goes out on tour. Everybody and their dog wants to do LITTLE SHOP and ANNIE right now, mainly because subconciously they found out the show is on the road and it reminded them of the title. Or they actually SAW the tour and now they want to do it. Of course, the Tour gets exclusivity on the title, so they get to decide who gets to do the show and who doesn't. The restrictions even apply to the Junior versions of the shows. Right now, everyone wants ANNIE, LITTLE SHOP, THE BOY FRIEND, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and URINETOWN. Last year at this time they were all clambering for BEAUTY/BEAST, LITTLE SHOP, FIDDLER and SEUSSICAL. I'm sure people will renew their interest in THE PAJAMA GAME if the revival runs long enough to perform on the Tonys.

And of course everyone is calling for RENT, WICKED, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS and THE PRODUCERS, all of which are still in their initial Broadway runs.

It was I who mentioned delivery confirmation yesterday, Jose, and in fact you don't even need to send stuff Priority to get it (though as I also mentioned yesterday, for some peculiar reason they charge you more for delivery confirmation for lesser class mail than for Priority).

Ah, yes, I remember it well.

And as for the USPS charging more for Delivery Confirmation on non-Priority Packages...  "Well, for just 60 cents more, Sir, you can send it by Priority Mail and receive Delivery Confimation."

DR Jason,k I know your job has lots of tediousness about it, but for awhile at least, I think there is so much fascination about seeing which shows get popular or ebb in popularity.

I know that's not enough to sustain a 40+ hour work week, but as a theater person, I certainly find this information you're giving us totally fascinating.

In all honesty, this job has taught me SO much about the "other" side of the business. The inner workings make much more sense to me and has made me think more like a business person and less like an emotional actor-type. That's a good thing because, well...as an actor I am my own business. Now I just need to get back to the acting part!!

It was a fun evening for me and a pleasure to finally meet Ant.  I just wish Jason, Rodzinski and TPunk had been there.

Every minute I spent with the HHW gang was great and I look forward to next year.  I was pleasantly surprised when SWW & DerBrucer joined us on Wednesday morning.

My only regret (Bruce you don’t want to continue reading) for the week is that I didn’t buy enough marzipan.  I will savor my last few bites. Jose what is that bakery again?

I see your point. If you're not currently getting to act yourself, at least you get to be around theatrical productions in this small way.

Of course, you also get to schedule all those different productions of shows, many of which would have parts you could do! Must be maddening, too. Argh!

In C:
You have to overblow the low Eb (hmmm...could that be the title of BK's next book?).   ;D  Alternatively, if you have a lot of breath (and something tells me you do  ;) ), you can just blow your brains out with no stops and it will approximate a high Eb.

In F:
Stop with your thumb (underneath), index finger and 4th finger (skipping 3).  You can delete the 4th finger stop if you're slightly flat (tone-wise, that is  ::)).

I should have taken a walk.  Instead I decided to unpack my suitcase.  So far I only managed to remove the dried strawberries and apricots from the Ross Sisters.  I of course indulged in too many.

I should go unpack that bag.  I am really overly tired.  A friend just called and I could barely respond to his questions, just the sound of a voice on the phone was more than I could tolerate-not his voice, just any sound.

The only reason I’m posting is Keith found the laptop for me and set it at my little desk.

Evening folks,

Sorry this has to be short but I’m very tired after my first day back at the zoo.  I mean work.  I mean last week on this day I visited a zoo and today I worked in one.  At least it felt that way.

I wasn’t too surprised at the pile of work on my desk.  There’s no way it’s going to get caught up by Thursday of next week.  Ahh, well such is life.  If a full in box is a sign of job security, then I have more then I know what to do with!

How fun that DR Cillaliz took that shot of VixMom, the Vixter and I!  I’m just as bad when it comes to noticing such things.  I’m only sorry you didn’t get to join us as we had such a lovely time with our private tour.

Speaking of which, VixMom, do you have that address for the zoo?  I really do want to write a glowing letter about our tour guide.  Tinnie?  Goodness, I’ve forgotten how she spelled her name already.

DR Elmore, my most sincere condolences on the loss of your friend.  One can only hope it was painless and with a dear one at his side at the time of parting.

DR PennyO, I’m glad you liked the card.

I’m working on the photos.  I’m amazed that even with a digital camera I have many unusable shots.  I have a couple great shots of my feet and some things I can’t even identify!  Also some good shots of things/places that I have no idea why I took the picture!

As soon as I get them cleaned up and in some type of order, I will start disk burning.  I also want to thank DP of Ben’s Ant for the suggestion about scanning all of the tickets and such to include in the collection.

I may post some (if not all) on Photo Buckets site and will send my password to those who wish it for their viewing pleasure.

I want to write little word docs in-between some of the pictures telling the story of what is going on or what I thought at the time.

BK, I forgot that you have an Apple not a PC.  I have no idea if Word works the same for you as it does for me.  Do you even have MS Office?   I have no clew.

I am so glad that DR Jane made it home safe.  Now that we have all been There and Back again (a Hobit reference) we shall have to make that journy again sometime.   :)

DR Elmore, you are to modest.  I might not understand what you do 100% but I know that you do what you do at 1001%.

DR TCB, I did soak it in the Epsom Salt water.  It must have helped because it didn't balloon up tonight.  Thank you for the suggestion.   :D

And now, to bed.  To sleep.  Have a wonderful evening all!

Larry, as Danise mentioned, we saw the naked cowboy.  We just didn’t have our photo taken with him. ;D

Jose do you have an itinerary from our walking tour?  Have you tested any of your new gadgets yet?  Once again thank you for our grand walking, eating tour and taking such good care of us.

It should be up tomorrow.  I started it yesterday, and just need to check to make sure all the links still work.

Soon, I promise...

From Vixmom:

Quote
I am sorry Danise, but I am afraid we MAY just have to remove the blame for all things from Jose and pass it on to you...

Since you were in NYC...

1. Lady hit on the head with a light  in the theatre where you were attending

2. Escalators break down in American Girl Store  while you are visiting

3. Lady hit by a bus in front of us

4. Cillaliz hit by a bike messenger while she & Jane were on the phone with you & me

5. Lady falls down in the street next to you while you are walking to theatre

6. Penn Station closed for suspicous soda can while you are there...

The heck with the terrorists.... look out for Danise!!!
;D ;D ;D

Could you have told me to suck in my stomach on Jane Street?  If I had seen that sooner I might have eaten less.   ;D

Well, back to some tootling - how the $%&# do you play a high Eb?

Well, first you have to get Eb high.  I suggest you pass him some locally grown Maui-wowie.

While In New York I Gained Back the Weight I Lost in Roumania - that's the title of my next novel.

Yes, Danise, I have Microsoft Word on my Apple.

Rehearsal was fun, we hired the lighting designer, and then had to make a really difficult decision about our set designer, whom we let go.  He's very, very talented, and I've known him for years and really like him, but it was becoming clear to everyone that he was having problems figuring out the complexities of doing this play in the space we're in - which I totally understand.  We were just all getting concerned that since we had yet to see or hear any ideas, and since he can't build the set (has to have others build it), it just seemed to be the best decision to find someone who knows and understands the space we're in, and who can build and paint the set him or herself.  Even sitting with our lighting designer and explaining the needs of the play, HE came up with some excellent suggestions just because he knows the space so well.

Ooohhhh...

Aaaaaahhhh....

*Actually, when I saw Himanshu Malik listed in the credits, I figured that that was the Indian version of "John Abraham".

;)

LOL! But John Abraham is Indian...actually he is half Indian and half Iranian, but with a Christian name (as he puts it) rather then a Hindu or Muslim name.

Enjoyed the Sidney Lumet interview although he was very nice about all of the actors and films he ever worked with and on except THE FUGITIVE KIND and Anna Magnani.

First off, I've never seen that movie. I saw the TV-version of ORPHEUS DESCENDING with Vanessa Redgrave some years ago, but have never seen that film.

I had read that the movie didn't go smoothly because Magnani had the hots for Brando, and he wasn't interested in her. (Did Williams write that in MEMOIRS?) Lumet said she just wouldn't rehearse because English gave her such trouble and she was self-conscious about speaking it.

Anyway, because he's had such a long career filled with memorable films and also has worked in theater and live TV, the show should have been at least twice as long as it was. Great films had to be covered in a couple of sentences, and that was frustrating.

Christopher Meloni had a memorable performance tonight on SVU. Not much of a crime story this week. Much more character driven than the other LAW & ORDER shows, and while the case itself wasn't all that fascinating, exploring his demons with him definitely was.

I also recorded THE CASINO MURDER CASE off TCM this afternoon. This is a Philo Vance murder mystery I've never seen, so I hope to get to that tomorrow, too.

I don't comment a lot of what I see on TV, but I have to agree that it was a fascinating character study of Christopher Meloni's role. I am beginning to feel that Law and Order: SVU is the best written and best acted of all the shows.

I agree with you, DR Michael S. Rather than simply a clone of the original, the show really has carved out its own niche and is usually features a gripping story with endings that haunt long after the program has ended.

Certainly now is my favorite, and for the past two weeks has been NBC's highest rated show.
