Title: JUGGLING
Post by: bk on October 12, 2005, 12:07:12 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've juggled the notes (as well as the balls, the notes have juggled you (as well as the balls), and now it is time for you to post until the juggling cows come home.

Why is tomovoz just sitting there like so much fish?  Was it something I said?  No circus memories?

Speaking of circus memories, I've never been able to find that fershluganah David Seville disc - most annoying, as I could be playing Camel Rock right now.

I've seen two performaces by Cirque De Soleil which I enjoyed very much indeed.

My childhood memories of Circus: I always loved the "Flyers" best. Even in those less politically correct times I did not care for lion tamers and caged animals.

Did you try Amazon in Japan BK.  That's where my David Seville disc was from and it was less expensive than the price on the USA site.

Speaking of Camels (not necessarily named Clyde) it is now way afer midnight at the Oasis - send your camels to bed.
The loudest concert I ever attended was by Maria Muldau.

I love Midnight At The Oasis.  I must play it right now.  But I cannot play Camel Rock.  Perhaps I'll ask dear reader Hisaka to snag it for me.  She's been absent because she spilled some wine on her laptop keyboard, and apparently her laptop keyboard doesn't drink.  It's at the Apple Store now sobering up.

We've discussed Circus movies before but I loved "The Greatest Show On Earth" (maybe I was less discerning as a 7 year old). "Trapeze" , "The Flying Fontaines" and "Three Ring Circus".

"Amazon" Japan does have English translations BK.

(It is difficult to read the emails they send though!)

We've discussed EVERYTHING before.  There are no new topics, only variations on old topics.  I suppose we could have a topic such as "When was the last time you wore a tunic?"  Or, "When was the last time you wore a Jonathan Tunick?"

I don't know why I have an aversion to ordering from amazon jp.  I just got a lovely package from amazon.de - I think I get worried about the payment page not being in English, and that I'll screwup the shipping info and stuff.

Favorite circus movies:

THE BIG CIRCUS with Victor Mature and Peter Lorre and Vincent Price and Rhonda Fleming and David Nelson....
a walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope, a saboteur trying to do the show in...and the bad guy is....well you will have to see the movie!

TRAPEZE of course, GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, THE BIG SHOW with Esther Williams and Cliff Robertson.

Never went to the circus in real life....never wanted to.

Magic acts....a comedien named The Great Kobe or something like that is funny and amazing!

So I'm channel-surfing and find out I have two channels that I didn't know I had...one if the FINE LIVING CHANNEL.  The other is BET's JAZZ CHANNEL.  I stop there as they were showing a black and white Frank Sinatra TV special and it was the most amazing thing...a real record of our times.  Here's Sinatra singing Gone With The Wind, wreath in the smoke from the cigarette he is smoking (during interludes in the song).  And while he is actually looks utterly lost in the song, it is the most casual thing...he scratches under his eye at one point; at another, just before singing the last line, he puts his hand up to his mouth and slightly coughs...right in the middle of the song.  Interestingly enough, it didn't really detract from the emotion of the song.  It turns out this show was the Timex special ("We thank THE UNTOUCHABLES for relinguishing their time in order to present this special.  It will return next week at it's usual time.") where Sinatra welcomed Elvis back from the army.  But long before Elvis comes on there are bits with Joey Bishop (as sort of the second host), Sammy Davis junior (doing impressions), Peter Lawford (singing and dancing with Sammy) and the Tom Hansen (?) Dancers doing these rather cheesy dance numbers.  One filmed on the beach with the four boys and three girls in calypso outfits.  Elvis comes on late and does Fame and Fortune and Stuck On You and then he and Sinatra do their Love Me Tender/Witchcraft duet.  All very weird and fascinating.  If the Jazz network has more shows like this, I may have to visit it more often.

Circus?  I'm not much for Circuses or Magicians really.  I think I've been to the Circus maybe twice in my life.  I went to the Magic castle once.  That was actually fun.  I also...a long time ago...worked in an entertainment complex in Dallas and had to teach my young magicians stage presence, write them jokes, and direct their acts so that weren't utterly lifeless.  That was fun before I got to see how certain illusions were done.  I always liked Mandrake the Magician.

Well I woke up at 6 AM on the living room recliner (where i apparently fell asleep and was lovingly covered with a blanket by vixdad) to hear the windows rattling withthe wind and the poundingof rain against the window pane and the dripping of water on the kitchen floor.....

I turned and nestled deeper into my warm blanket...

THE DRIPPING OF WATER ON THE KITCHEN FLOOR?!!!!!!

Ah ye, apparent;y the wind and the rain was so intense that it came trhough the screen, pooled inside the windpow frame and then worked its way under the two interior window panes and poured through on the inside down on to the kitchen table and thence to the floor

and how was YOUR monring?  Let me tell you how much I am looking forward to my 30  mile drive to the office  THIS monring.... never mind I bet you can guess

And now, as we move to Page 2 it's Deb (Vixmom) and me as I listen to Barbara Dixon sing a song from Blood Brothers. I'm listening to Elaine Paige on BBC 2 so I have no control over what's being played.

On that note I will move to the kitchen and wash my bowl and get back to work.

Good morning, all!  Yesterday, I finished my Rockette piece (dreadful song) and I have to drop it off today.  Beyond that, it's more Chicago Humanities Festival work, and a trip to the bank.

TOD:  when I was a kid I loved the circus, but now I'm rather apathetic.  When I was in Ohio last month, a small circus passed through my hometown:  the tent materialized over night, stayed for two days, and vanished again.  All I could think of was KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE.

'morning!  When I saw on the Today Show just now about the flooding in the northeast, I wondered if anybody here was affected.  Well, DR vixmom, you answered my question and I'm so sorry!  Aren't we glad all that rain didn't arrive a week ago?

TOD - My family used to go to the Shrine Circus at the Michigan State Fair Grounds.  I remember eating cotton candy and the grand finale when the guy got shot out of a cannon.

Actually, this week my life is a circus, with a work event each day - last night I spoke about nonprofit funding to a health-related support group, today a grantmaker is speaking at the library, and tomorrow I teach the October version of grantseeking basics.  I feel like the juggler who's trying to keep all the plates spinning.

Is that the song I Want To Be a Rockette that Debbie Gravitte sang on the Alan Menkan album and Karen Ziemba sang and danced (with The Rockettes) on the first Broadway's Leading Ladies special?

Yep!  I don't think the lyric's very good, and I find it formless as a composition.

I think I will choose Doug Henning as favorite magician/illusionist and who later sold his illusions I believe to David Copperfield. I saw the Magic Show (late in the run) and Merlin on Broadway and some of them were amazing and I don't want to know how they are done.

But my favorite of all time is Metamorphosis.

The magacian handcuffs the assistant and shackles the feet. Then places the assistant in a bag. Ties the back. Places the assistant in the trunk closes it. Locks it. The puts chains around it and locks them. He then stands on top of the trunk. Grabs a circular shower curtain brings it up to his neck. Tells us not to blink and then raises and lowers the curtain within a second or two and the assistant is standing there. The assistant then unchains and unlocks the trunk. Opens the bag and the magician is inside; handcuffed and shackeled and WEARING A DIFFERENT COSTUME!

Though Copperfield's making the statue of liberty disappear was interesting I found out how it was done and then it wasn't so interesting.

TOD:

I find Cirque du Soleil something of a mixed bag, with the shows having enough highs to make up for the dull sections, but loved "O" in Vegas almost from start to finish.  The Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center is also a real favorite experience.

One of my favorite songs is "Join the Circus" from the musical BARNUM - I'm still on a Cy Coleman kick right now, and think it's a shame that Michael Stewart didn't write lyrics for more of his career.

Favorite circus misheard lyric, because of how it was misheard by someone I worked with:
"Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'Cause she didn't want prades just passing by her
Sp she painted ona smile and took up with some clown
As she danced without Annette upon the wire."
(it should have been "a net" but Bernice at Alexander Associates was convinced that they were singing "Annette" - fond misheard lyric memory)  :)

Good Morning!

I'm up...

Well, I got up at 5:15 feeling quite wide awake, and contemplated staying out of bed, but...

Then came 7:30...  8:15... And then 9:00...

I'm guessing I should have stayed up when I got up at 5:15 since I'm feeling a little drowsy right now.  But the rain is falling - pouring at times - and I'm suspecting that I'll have a bit of a drip, drip, drip again from the bathroom ceiling.  -I can already hear "it" inside the ceiling/wall, so...

I also just looked out into the backyard/patio, and there's quite the "puddle" out there.  The drain doesn't look clogged, I think there's just too much rain right now.  Hopefully, it won't start seeping under the door and into the kitchen.

...At least I'm only renting... Well, even betted, I'm only subletting right now, so...

TOD:  I remember that my parents took my sisters and me to the Barnum & Bailey Circus a number of times and that I ran hot and cold with it.  I loved the high wire and trapeze acts and the fact that I was able to see all these exotic animals in such close proximity.  But I never liked the clown acts--their gags just struck me more as stupid than funny.

I really like Cirque du Soleil, but I tend to think of that as more of a new age vaudeville than as a circus.

Favorite magician:  David Copperfield

Vic Damone's duets with Judy Garland on her series are among the most riveting moments in TV variety show history. They did a WEST SIDE STORY medley and a PORGY AND BESS medley that defy description. (They also did a KISMET medley that doesn't live up to the other two.)

In reference to bk's comments about Donald O'Connor's ball bouncing number in ANYTHING GOES (which I commented on favorably last week), I really feel this man was an unsung hero of musicals. He truly did tour de force performances in a handful of big budget musicals (I haven't seen many of the B-musicals he did with Peggy Ryan at Universal) and is often ignored or forgotten by critics.

Everybody remembers "Make "Em Laugh" fondly, but he does this amazing, frenetic number in I LOVE MELVIN called "I Wanna Wander" where he does an entire mystery spoof by himself playing all the characters. In the same movie, he dances on roller skates in a more bravura fashion than either Astaire or Kelly in their roller skate numbers. He had that terrific "A Man Chases a Girl" fantasy number in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, too.

So, he deserves more credit than he often gets for being the superb entertainer he was. (He did win an Emmy in the 1950s for his variety work, so at least he did get some recognition in his lifetime.)

I forgot to mention last night some impression of the new TV GUIDE.

In a word, FLUFF. It's like the TV section of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY expanded into an entire magazine. Overkill thy name is TV GUIDE. And the print is so large, I didn't need reading glasses.

To be fair, it IS just the first week. Like ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, I'm sure it will adapt and adjust in the coming months, but I'd really love to see more substance (reviews, overviews, history of TV), and less pictorials and silly charts.)

And Ty Pennington on the cover. Yuck!

We used to go to the RIngling Bros. Barnum-Bailey Circus every year. I was never SUPER fond of the circus, but we would dutifully go (just like we'd go to the Ice Capades every year, too).

Favorite circus movie: BILLY ROSE'S JUMBO just because I love Doris Day, Stephen Boyd, Martha Raye, and Jimmy Durante and those fabulous Rodgers and Hart songs. The circus acts in the movie I feel slow it down but I naturally understand they HAD to be there.

As for magicians, Doug Henning was always an awesome magician. Apart from THE MAGIC SHOW, he'd appear on TV variety shows and specials and was always just astonishing. And the fact that he was kind of nerdy-hippie looking (instead of the suave magicians like Copperfield), made him more appealing to me.

Like DR Michael, I never wanted to know how the tricks were done. For me, it WAS magic.

Ty on the cover might be the only reason I would pick it up.  Is he shirtless?

I have to admit that they sent the old digest book out with some style.  They have multiple covers with current TV stars recreating TV Guide covers of old.  It's a pretty cute idea.

Mornin' from the Wet Apple. It's disgusting outside. My jeans are soaked through from the rain and wind - and I've been inside for almost 2 hours now! Thank goodness it didn't rain like this last week for all you travelers out there in the dark. I suspect your trips would have been a tad miserable.

Last night I went to a concert with a friend from work. He had an extra ticket due to a last-minute back-out and didn't want to go by himself, so I went. The artist was Mr. Jamie Cullum - a British jazz-rock singer. The performance venue had no seating, so we stood for nearly four hours (and that's after standing in line for an hour just to get in!), and as my friend is quite wee, we were right up front...about 10 feet from the speakers. I hate to sound like an old man, but...it was WAAAY too loud for my taste (louder than anything you've EVER heard in a Broadway theatre) and all of Mr. Cullum's songs started to sound the same after about an hour. And I was miffed once I got in, anyway. The security guy required me to check my bag, which is no big deal. As a bag/coat checker myself, I understand these things and make it a point not to make an ass of myself when required to check things, but then the coat check guy demanded I pay him $1.50. WHAT!?! You do NOT require people to check items and then CHARGE them for it! Not even the money-hungry Met Opera does that! I can understand charging if someone CHOOSES to check an item, but to be required to cough up $1.50 is ridiculous. And, sadly, I had spent my last bit of money on dinner, so I had no money with me and Russell had already gone up to save us a spot on the floor. I explained my situation to the security guard, who looked at me like I was stupid and said, "I don't understand - you don't have $1.50?" At that point I lost my temper and snapped back, "What part of that don't you understand? I don't have any cash on me - I spent my money on DINNER!" The jerk actually made me leave and walk three blocks to an ATM. I will not be returning to the Irving Plaza any time in the future.

I love circuses. But I love zoos more.

That's all I have to say right now, except this: I don't like circuses.

Today is the midterm in Dr. C's class. I only hope I don't fail it too badly. And then I have to go listen to some talk about Darwin.

Ty on the cover might be the only reason I would pick it up.  Is he shirtless?

I have to admit that they sent the old digest book out with some style.  They have multiple covers with current TV stars recreating TV Guide covers of old.  It's a pretty cute idea.

No, he's not shirtless (he's wearing teal). His lithe frame is swinging a sledgehammer on the cover, but his face has been airbrished to to the point of absurdity.

I liked those famous cover re-dos as well. My subscription copy cover had Reba doing Lucy's grape stomping scene.

The listings are now national listings, not regional ones, and you're instructed to visit the on-line listings to get specific schedules for your local stations.

Good Afternoon!

Just coming up for some air... I mean, I knew I had a back log of mail to go through, but I just had no idea how much of a backlog it was/is?!?!?!  WOW!?!?!?  I've only had one "surprise" in the pile so far, and after checking some other things, I think that should be the only surprise.  -Thankfully, that surprise was taken care of immediately and rather painlessly with a phone call - and a very friendly and helpful customer service rep - see, they do exist!

...Sadly, I'm guessing it will take me a good part of the afternoon to get the rest of the pile sorted, organized and/or purged.  But once it's done, it will be done.  So...

...And the drip, drip, drip did indeed start again.  However, the landlord and her main repair guy came over too this morning.  And, like I thought, it's not a leaking pipe, it's just water coming in from/around/via the exhaust/ventilation pipe for the bathroom on the roof.  -Not that the bathroom is on the roof, just the pipe/exhaust.  So, for now, the bucket stays on the floor, and once we get some dryer weather this weekend, they'll send someone up to the roof to check things out.  -It really is just a "drip, drip, drip," - maybe just a half an inch of water in the bucket over the past three hours.  Not bad at all.

MShayne, I only mentioned Tricks of the Trade since we were talking about MAGIC, even though it was a show about - well, I don't know what it was about.  I don't think we need to list it - not something I care about or am proud of - just a job, like selling Bibles.  The only thing I enjoyed were the two or three times I directed in the field - I liked the hostess of the show, too.  And we did do a piece on Hybrid cars, so I learned about Hybrid cars, and we did a piece on facial work that I took great delight in editing - I made it as horridly graphic as I could so the network would have to watch it and puke - and give me notes to soften it, which they did.

Comments on last night's AMAZING RACE.

I wish it was regular TAR, but I'm okay with the family thing. Although I cannot remember most teams by name.  Thankfully they at least got on a plane.  But I was not happy with how the show played out.  Basically if you pulled the last number, then you were gone, because each team had to go in the space thingy one by one. How stupid was that? I am sort of surprised that the people in charge of TAR don't realize what makes their show.  It is the travelling to other countries.  And it is having the teams race to complete tasks.  I was very disappointed that after the bus ride there was really nothing too challenging.  And I was also disappointed that the teams couldn't do the challenge at the same time.  Oh and while I'm at it, that wasn't really a challenge since every single team was able to ride the spaceship on their first try. Lame.

Re TAR:

I agree that competition wise there wasn't a lot in last nights episode, but entertainment wise it was the tops! I was sad about the team that lost last night, but boy was it a fun episode.

I am enjoying the families just as much as when it was teams of two....and it usually takes me several episodes before I can get familiar with who the various team members are.

TAR:

!!! AHHH-OOOO-GAHHH  !!!  SPOILER WARNINGS  !!! AHHH-OOOO-GAHHH  !!!

After last night I found that I don't mind the family thing too much anymore since I'm now able to tell most of them apart.  I still prefer the two-man teams, though.  And last night it was more driving, driving, driving.  At least there was a change of pace with the riding, riding, riding (on the bus.)

Speaking of the bus, how about that meltdown with the widowed mom family?  I had thought that the loud Bronx family was obnoxious, but after seeing how the widowed mom kept telling her family to lie and put on a happy face and pretend that everything is alright--well, I think these are the ones that are gonna wind up on Dr. Phil.

Also very funny how the one kid referred to his stepmother as a bitch right after she talked about how wonderful it was that she was being accepted into the family not just as a new mother to the kids but a friend, as well.

I was also sad to see the sons-in-law family go--they were a fun group.  But you could see that the old man was wearing thin.  I'm continuing to root for the brothers and sister--they're fun, too (maybe too fun for their own good, I'm afraid.)

And like I said last night--that final prize was amazing!  I always thought that BP made a crappy grade of gasoline, but I could live with it if it was going to be free for the rest of my life.

TAR SPOILERS from last night.

I am also okay with the family part of it. Although I also prefer couples.
And yes that 'gas for life' prize for all drivers was ridiculously awesome.

The preview for next week looks heartbreaking (they have the widowed family whose father was killed on a racetrack go to one).  And yes they were slightly crazy this week (and they were one of my favs before this).

Thankfully soon they will get of the US, cause i've had enough boredom.

I'm not really sure who my favorites are. But yes i like the brothers and sister team.  And I dislike the annoying ny family.

Unlike DR Mbarnum, i didn't find last night's episode particularly entertaining. Although i'm hoping that once they travel a bit, that things will get better. Plus it always takes a bit of time to really get to know all the teams.

And DR Dan, even though the father (with the sons-in-law) was having a tough time, that really was not why they lost.  It really bugged me that failing to pull the first numbers was their downfall. At least if they had lost because of driving through the mud, that would have made sense.

TAR:  we LOL'd when the Italian family was complaining about the widow's family.  People in glass houses....

Dripping kitchens:  We occasionally get a tiny drip through our ceiling vent/fan when it's raining torrentially and the wind is blowing really hard.  All I can assume is that the wind blows the rain in sideways underneath the vent cap on the roof.

I rather like it. It is a story song. But I am just a consumer what do I know from forms. :)

I think it's a poor Menken number, but God knows, it's certainly not a choral number, which is what I had to make of it.  Debbie Gravitte's arrangement makes it better than it is, and the Ziemba version is totally stretched out of its original published state.

Well... I thought I would make it back down to The Village this afternoon, but I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon.  However, I did manage to make major "contributions" to both the circular file and recycling bin in my apartment.  All those envelopes!  All those "fillers"!  And I'm still amazed at the amount of snail mail I receive even though most of my bills - even some magazines (love that Zino reader!) - and other correspondence are dealt with online and via e-mail.

I have just about another 30 minutes to go on this particular project, and then... well... I'm not exactly sure...

I hate that. Because the subway in my neighborhood is elevated ('above ground' for those of you who don't frequent the subways), the noise and vibration of the train often set off a symphony of alarms. And dogs. Believe it or not, you actually get used to it.

And I've learned to keep the remote control handy when I'm watching TV. Every 15 minutes or so I have to turn the volume WAAAAY up while a train passes and then rush to turn it WAAAY back down so I don't bother the neighbors.

Ahh...life in the big city. I wouldn't trade it for the world. :)

Re: Amazing Race

DG Ann and I have just about given up on this season.  It simply bores us.  I don't necessarily have a problem with families rather than two-member teams (although, why mess with a good thing?), but rather the lack of challenge in this season.  Just seems there's been nothing all that difficult at all.  And 3 weeks worth of episodes and all the ground they've covered is from NYC to Alabama?  Sorry, that may be a race, but I find it anything but amazing.  Please, CBS, realize that this is not the show that has been a success for you the past few seasons, and nowhere near the Emmy winner it was in the past.  I want it back the way it was!

As a child I loved the circus.  One of my favorite memories was not the circus but the toy I purchased while there.  It was a bird on the end of a stick that made noises while I spun it around.  I spent many wonderful hours playing with my cat who thought the flying bird was just the greatest toy ever.

When the boys were young and we went to the traveling circus, small but fun.  Best of all was watching them assemble the circus the day before.  I wonder if either of them remembers this, maybe Bryan would.

Like zoo’s I can enjoy myself at the circus but a big part of me feels very sad for the animals.  I also get very nervous when children are doing the high-wire acts.

Watched THE CASINO MURDER CASE today which was recorded yesterday off TCM. Not a very good Philo Vance movie as Paul Lukas, playing Philo, is just not right for the part.

I then watched the gay themed STRAIGHT-JACKET on DVD.

No, not the Joan Crawford chiller (I think hers is spelled STRAIT-JACKET).

Anyway, it's about a 1950s closeted movie star forced into a marriage with a woman. He meets a gay novelist with whom he falls in love and has to decide whether he wants the career or the man. Meanwhile, scandal sheets are searching for any dirt they can find out about movie stars and a Congressman is trying to one-up Joseph McCarthy by finding a gay Communist so he can make a name for himself.

Has some cute elements to it but the problem is that the movie is never sure of its tone: is it a satire, a love story, a farce. The movie has elements of all these things and yet it veers wildly from one to another and seems too full of ideas in need of some rewriting.

The cast has some familiar Hollywood faces (including Veronica Cartwright as the gay actor's agent), but I think the results are too mixed to give it an all out recommendation.

Did anyone who bought the Universal Hammer Horror Collection that came out this month have any of the problems that they are discussing at Amazon.com.....freezing, pixilation, disk failure....

No problem so far, but then I have only watched one of the movies....my ADAM-12 DVD (from Universal) on the other hand froze up my player and made me unhappy.

Seen very few of the Philo Vance movies, but I enjoy the books though once you've got the formula, they're easy to figure out and Philo can be an insufferable prig at times.  As Ogden Nash once wrote:  "Philo Vance needs a kick in the pance."

All of the Philo Vance movies were made in the late 20s to mid-30s, so the earlier ones are very primitive in production values (scratchy sound and a camera inside a soundproof box) and the later ones were done on the cheap.

The studios who owned them haven't done anything to preserve them either, and some are in the public domain which, of course, means they're REALLY going to look crappy.

I've never read the books. I should get around to at least one.

Jane - I'm sorry you and your friend got drenched on Saturday.

LOL, I didn't mind.  My friend who did go ahead of us to the subway said it was packed and she had a long wait.  Now I really don't mind we stood in the rain instead of a crowded subway ;D

I’m still waiting for my makeup to arrive.  I do have the samples to try but all of it will have to wait until the work is done.  I'm so sensitive if I have a reaction I won't know if it’s from the skin products or what is currently in our home environment.

LOL - One of the women who attended the program I hosted today told me how beautiful my skin is.  Guess that makeover paid off!  Wouldn't the Bobbi Brown staff at Saks Fifth Avenue be pleased?

Much better than the women at the other make-up counters offering us a free make-over as we left Bobbi Brown's.  ;D

DISCUSSION about TAR and the destinations (spoiler if you don't want to know)

I liked TAR, although I am said the team that was eliminated was one that I liked.  And I do have a couple of favorites....  And the teams I don't like at all.  I do not think the teams leave North America this time, so they may be headed your way DRJENNIFER.

Hopefully next time we will be back to the two person teams.  NO MORE FAMILIES!!!!

As I said I like the two person teams better. But the family aspect has actually worked okay.

Yes I believe they leave North America, and go to South America and Central America.  I think they go to Belize, and Panama.  Not sure where else.

And yes they do come to canada.  And yes they do come to Montreal (yeah!). And I think Toronto and Niagara Falls and possibly Alberta (on a different part of the trip).

At least all the places I've listed seem interesting.  I think that not wanting to travel too far could have worked if they had only picked more interesting places. Even Hawaii, Alaska, California or any other place could have shown us exciting scenic things that would interest most people.

The drywall guy has convinced Keith we need to trade in our SUV for a truck-Groan.  I am not a fan of truck but the guy says they are really comfortable now like the SUV’s.  Keith says we will use my car for trips but we can’t always.  If we go to Portland for Christmas we will need the truck or SUV to get over the mountain pass, same goes for traveling to LA in the winter.

Keith does have a good argument for this.  At the moment our trash is collected at the end of our driveway.  In November that service will change to the end of our road.  We must use their very large garbage barrel that will only fit into a truck.  This also doesn’t make sense because our neighbors down the main road were given a smaller can by the trash collectors.  They also have once a week pick up while we only have every other week.

Voight's cowboys were both self deluding naive drifters - acting out a role but not really living it! I liked both characters!!

I could see the midnight cowboy drifting into crime to survive.

Of course that maybe that I wanted to see that! To me both characters had vunerability cloaked in false bravado.

Some great lines in "Holes" - the real name of the Voight character being "Marion" for a start.
Cute musical reference to the Happy Days theme in the film also.

Hello people.  DtM and JRand you made me laugh for the first time today  Thank you!!

Not to bore you withthe details but because of various people being intentionally obtuse and difficult,  followed by a breakdown of the photocopier, followed by the fact that I had to drive 30 miles in the drving rain while everyone was rushing home for Yom Kippur, I ended up up being 15 minutes late to my closing this afternnoon, plus being soaking wet when I got there thanks to the SUV driver who thoughtfully  plowed through a puddle at 43000 MPH in the parking lot raising a wave to rival any off the Atlantic coast.

I no sooner get in the room, spread out my papers then the lights go out... then they go on....
then they go out and stay out.

We are in ac onfernece room with no windows, no emergency lights, the phones no longer work, and this office has no flashlights .  One of the secretaryies has a blueberry scented decorative candle which she agrees to donate to the cause and we, all nine of us,  gathered around that, and using that and the light of our cellphones managed to get the closing done in only twice the time it would have taken if we had light.

Foortunately at the last moment the electricity doid come on for theall important photocopying of the checks or we would have had to hold everything  over until tomorrow.

On the bright side my hair smells delicously like hot blueberry pie

A few years ago my office manager gacve me front row three tickets to "The Greatest Show On Earth" Ringling Borthers & Barnum & Bailey  Circus.  Vixdad  couldn't come fpr some reason I do not remember , so I brought my Mom.  She had not been at the circus since she was a little girl and I don't know wo loved it more, she or the Vixter (who was about 8 at the time)

The  "head clown" was the same one on the DIsney circus tape that the Vixter watched over and over when she was little and he posed for picture with her, much to her delight

Magic by Miss Olivia Newton-John

Old Black Magic by the McGuire Sisters
It's Magic by Miss Doris Day

I love the first two songs, but my favorite version of "Old Black Magic" is by Janis Siegel with Fred Hersch.  They play with the rhythm/meter and several times they go into 5/4 time!  Pretty darned cool. :)

Sorry to pop in and out but I had to work late tonight and by the time I get home at six thirty, cook dinner, do the dishes, etc, etc it’s after seven.  I feel like I’m so far behind on everything but I’m not catching up on anything!

I have yet to unpack—I threw the suitcases in the back of the Bonnie until I can get to them.

As I told you on Saturday morning, DR Elmore, the government sets up flu shots for us and today was our day.  It didn’t even sting but my arm is sore now and I feel kinda flu like and tired.  That will pass.

Thanks for all of the info about the zoo, DR Ben and Vixmom.  I’ll be sending something as soon as I get a moment.  For a four day work week this one is taking forever to be over.

I also wanted to thank you for the song lyrics, DR Vixmom.  I remember our Dr. Paul Bearer who did “Creature Feature” on Saturday afternoons going into the castle music room and singing those.  Dr. Paul passed away some years back and I miss him.  “I’ll be lurking for yooouuu!”

Glad to hear about your compliment, DR Ginny.  My things are still packed.  I’ll get to them sometime.

I was never a fan of the circus.  I realized at an early age that it wasn’t “fun” for the animals to stand on their heads and do those tricks they make the poor animals do and that’s all I have to say on that subject.

I guess the closest circus I do like is “The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao”.

I had a cup of my rose tea this morning.  I’m somewhat disappointed as it didn’t taste like rose at all.  It was good, just not the flavor I expected.

Mood rings.  That brings back a memory of my Dad.  He bought both of his ladies (Mom and I) one of the first ones that came out.  He said he wanted us to have them so we could stick our hands out the door before he’d step in to see what our moods were.  If they were bad, he would go someplace else!

Favorite magician:  David Copperfield

Thank you for the address and name of the Zoo lady, DR Vixmom.  I also had a very lovely time.  I keep looking at my watch and thinking about what I was doing last week at the time.  Sigh.  Why are the good times over so quickly?

I hope you all get dried out.  I don’t want to hear about any DR’s being sick with a cold from all that wet weather.

I really must say good night now.

Laters!

Well, today’s catastrophe is all over with. Dr. C’s midterm was four essays. I hate essay tests. I HATE essay tests. I HATE ESSAY TESTS! But I used a lot of big words and some semicolons and talked about “the human condition” a lot, so I think I got about a C.

Then I had to go attend a lecture about Darwin, for some reason, for my pre-1860 American Literature class. Don’t ask me why. First, this guy introduced the guy who was going to introduce the speaker. Then the guy who was going to introduce the speaker proceeded to do so, starting with, “This man needs no introduction.” For a man who needs no introduction, it took an awfully long time to introduce him. Eight minutes, to be exact. We heard all about how he used to fish salmon commercially, how he once saved a man from drowning, and we heard reviews for the three books he wrote.

Then the speaker started speaking. He has apparently devoted his life to studying the way Darwin’s Theory of Evolution has affected American literature. He passed out a list of several of the authors he says were influenced by Darwin. One of them was F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ever since last semester when I wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald into all my term papers, I get the giggles whenever anyone mentions him. So I got the giggles right there in a classroom full of old people.

I couldn’t see the speaker because the girl sitting in front of me was blocking my view. She had a lot of really curly hair, and every time she moved her head, her curls would bounce around. Which really isn’t all that funny, but if you have the giggles, it’s hilarious. So I looked around for something else to look at. On the wall right behind the speaker there was this painting of some teacher. He was old and kinda ugly and had this really stern expression on his face. As soon as I saw that, I thought, “If I paid somebody to paint my portrait and it came out looking like that, I would sue.” That got me giggling all over again.

Then the lady sitting next to me got up and left the room because her cell phone was ringing. Two seconds later, somebody else sat in her seat. I could see who it was out of the corner of my eye. You’ll never guess who it was.

It was Dr. C. So I had to spend the last twenty minutes or whatever of the lecture sitting next to the dreaded Dr. C. Oh, the horror! Yet, for some reason, it made me want to laugh.

But I got through it. Now the next big catastrophe will be my last midterm on Friday.

Continuing on with yesterday's TOD (I'm always behind in my reading... or my thinking, whichever applies.  What can I say?):

Stan Freeberg Presents "The United States of America, Part I:  The Early Years"

I often find myself singing "It's a Round Round World" or "Look at the Colors You Chose" in the car.

And I suspect this album was the inspiration for Mel Brooks' History of the World, Part I.

And speaking of Brooks, I would add two:  High Anxiety and Young Frankenstein.  Those are satire, aren't they?  some of his others are just too painfully silly.  I mean, how many thousands of dollars do you have to spend to film a really baaaaaad pun?

I've been working my fingers to the bone...well, something like that.

I would have liked to catch up on all the posts from the last couple of days, but there wasn't enough time.

I would have also liked to catch up on last week's LOST, which we missed because we were in NYC on Jose's eating/walking tour, but it didn't get recorded.

Jose is to blame once again.

Another early day tomorrow.

Re: Domino.

The Dal that the construction worker was thinking of having us take care of has been on the run for the last week or so.  He's come by our yard a couple of times, but has had no interest in being caught   (That it's been rainy here hasn't helped things at all.)

If we catch him, we'll gladly be giving him a home for as long as we can.  But we first have to catch him.   :-\

I watched ANYTHING GOES on DVD today - Molly bought it for me :).

I really don't have much to add to what MR BK and DR MATTH have already said.  I first saw it late one night MANY years ago in a P/S version no doubt.

I thought the color was very good and the soundtrack was nice in my 5.1 ProLogic system.  The costumes were very nice, although Zizi Jeanmaire's regular clothes made her look "horsey."  She is NOT a small girl and far from the ballet "ideal" - one of the reasons she left the Paris Ballet, it seems.

You have to go into the movie knowing that you are NOT going to see ANYTHING GOES by any means - the additional songs ARE painful.  Cahn and Van Heusen did much better work elsewhere than they do here.

Here are my questions:

Was Mitzi Gaynor singing flat on the title song?  Whew!  I think the problem with that dance is (as MR BK wrote) the choreographer Ernie Flatt.  He choreographed for television and it shows.

Jeanmaire reminds me TOO MUCH of Vera Ralston.  Did she do her own singing?  She and her husband Roland Petit met in ballet class when they were both 9 years old, and they are still married today.

Bing and Donald are Bing and Donald - and I enjoy almost everything they do.

WHAT THE HELL was that finale all about?  Hats with wings that flutter?  I liked the set (all the sets were good).

In the end - my FAVORITE number for song and dance was "De-Lovely" by O'Conner and Gaynor.

DR Jane -  I notice that in mentioning the noodle kugel, you graciously opted not to comment on the Matzoh Brei, which actually looked more like a matzoh-and-fat scramble than a matzoh brei.

I figure if I say a few Jewish words, I'll be excused for staying in the office until after sundown tonight.  (But it was the only way i could assure that the work could get done and that no one would have to bother me tomorrow.)

Colin and I will quite likely return to the Milford Plaza again.  We found it convenient.

That's where we stayed this trip. We got the best deal there this time. Other times we've gotten better deals at the Edison or the Crown Plaza. It's convenient and clean. That's all we ask of a hotel since we don't spend a great deal of time there.

Thanks, DR Jane, for the Alan Tudyck report. I really did love him in SPAMALOT (well, all the guys I saw were tremendous). I should go see his film SERENITY since I was a fan of the FIREFLY television series, but when I read that it was already scheduled for DVD release in mid-December, I figured I'd save the $7 and wait for the DVD.

LOST didn't have the most suspenseful episode in its history, but I laughed several times (just love Josh Holloway as Sawyer), and Hurley's backstory has always been poignant. I liked the solution he came up with for the food.

Has Charlie started dipping into his heroin stache yet? I'm guessing no since I think Locke would have spotted it if he had.

I had planned to watch last night's SUPERNATURAL at 8 tonight, but I got involved in re-watching A FEW GOOD MEN and just let it play until 9. I hadn't watched this in a couple of years, anddespite it being an early DVD transfer, it still looks very good.

Funny to see folks like Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Noah Wyle in small parts before they became more famous in other films or on TV.

Hmmm....

Nothing like a great meal with a good friend to help bring some sunshine into a very gray and rainy day.

The food tonight at Becco was truly wonderful.  I've never had a bad meal there, and tonight was certainly no exception.  In fact, the desserts on the dessert sampler tasted better and fresher than they have in the past - especially the panna cotta, the riccotina and the chocolate mousse cake.  -Oh, and the grapefruit and campari sorbetto!  Buon Appetito!

After LAW & ORDER finished, then I put on SUPERNATURAL (which explains why I'm later than usual logging on tonight.)

Pretty good episode, too. The boys were investigating the "Bloody Mary" creature. No, not the Tudor queen of England, but a phantom who lives in mirrors and punishes those people who have taken part in the death of a person and who invoke her name three times.

I preordered this morning the first season of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN which comes out next Tuesday.

The first season was the most adult and graphic of all the seasons shot for the series. Phyllis Coates plays Lois in these, and is a tough cookie (though she does scream a lot during the season.)

I'm looking forward to having complete versions of these. I think the ones that TV LAND played for many years and that I taped were trimmed for additional commercials.

Meeting finished.  We like our casting director very much.  We went over to Du-Par's for a snack and now my day is finally done - don't know if I'll have time to watch anything or not, and I'm heating up the Jacuzzi for the first time in over eight weeks, hoping that will relax my neck and back muscles.

I'm on disc one side two of the Hitchcock set.  There are some really good episodes on side two - side one, I feel, the early stuff, they were feeling there way still (although the two Hitch directed episodes are top-notch).  By the seventh or eighth show they were getting the tone right although it's still hit and miss.  That said, they're all quite enjoyable.

I used to have an early '60s paperback book of scary stories "presented" by Hitchcock. It had a scary picture of him on the cover and the words "Rock-a-bye body on the grave's edge."

Then, in gradeschool, well after he died, there was a series of kids books "Alfred Hitchcock presents The Three Detectives." About three teenage crimesolvers, it was popular among some of my friends who dressed as the three detectives for Halloween.

Amazing that SO many episodes were cranked out per season back in those days.

Remember when they revived ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS and used his old intros and just colorized them? That was an experiment bound to fail.

Anthology shows don't seem to go over any more, but I don't see why they don't. No continuing story to keep up with, and you just never know from week to the next what story you'll end up with.

DR Jose and I did have a LOVERLY meal tonight at Becco, which is one of the restaurants owned by PBS' Lidia of Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen. The food was incredible - I honestly don't think I've ever had a cut of meat quite like the one I had tonight. Cooked to perfection and bigger than any cut of beef should be (no comments, TCB), it was simply amazing, but it certainly held no candles to the company.

DR Jose's ossobuco was incredibly tasty, as well, and as he said, dessert was exquisite. Who knew that a little bit of milk, vanilla and gelatin could make such a fantastic dessert???

Dinner was a real treat and a perfect way to brighten the day. Thanks again, Jose!!
