Title: LIQUID SOCIETY

Well, you've read the notes, you've had your latte triple frappacino whilst reading the notes, you've had five sips from your bottle of water, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently at Cowbuck's getting their cowfee.

Well it certainly sounds like a star-studded gala at the old Stardust Room last night!

What did you wear, MR BK?  Was everyone dressed in his/her ritziest best?  What was the best and worst outfit last night?  You must have noticed and seen.  Did you get to walk on a red carpet?

Darling Lili - I like the movie, I love the songs and score.

Just watched the SNOW DEVILS trailer on the TCM site.  Yes, I must leave now to watch this new 1965 MGM Italian release about the frozen aliens ("from another planet?") who want to freeze the earth so that they can live on it.  I have heard of this movie, but now I MUST SEE IT.

Chaos ensues.

It was more casual than dressy - people were instructed to come in their favorite piano key color - black or white.  I came in blue and gray - my gray slacks, blue shirt, and blue sport coat.  I looked quite spiffy.

I like Espresso, have not usually but every time after meal at Italian restaurant.
I take at least a cup of strong Green Tea and at least one liter of Ooolong Tea and try to have at least one liter of Water every day. I live in the Liquid Society.
So I should give a lot of care not to spiling wine on my laptop...

Them SNOW DEVILS was mean.  And since the movie was produced and directed by the same people and featured some of the same actors AND props and costumes - it was almost like seeing a sequel to WILD WILD PLANET!

GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK.  I like David Straitharn and Robert Downey, Jr.....I am just afraid that Mr George Clooney has taken this important piece of television news and American history and turned it into a left wing slam on the current administration.

I hope I am wrong.  George Clooney isn't Rob Reiner after all.

Wow, last night's flurry of late-nite postings and reviews was indeed fascinating.  Even though it was a slow news day in terms of number of postings, what's there was choice. (A Hepburn reference)

Topic of the day:

I just have one cup of coffee in the morning, but with lots of milk, so I guess it's sort of a latte or cafe au lait.  But usually that's it, except for a decaf something or other at times to be social.

But I've become an iced tea addict, and was thrilled when Skip discovered the Crystal Light diet iced tea mix.  Life's little pleasures.

Good morning, all!  After all the check nonsense and the cancellation of my plans yesterday, I spent the evening sulking and feeling sorry for myself,  It was neither productive nor rewarding, but cash flow is a self-employment curse and $4400-4500, which should have arrived by Friday in two payments, is a lot of money to be floating around anywhere but where it should be, in my bank account.  My publisher has not not paid me royalties this year, which usually arrive by June, and he's been promising a royalty check since August!  I've never had a problem with him before, either, so my horoscope must be a mess at present.  Yes, I am unhappy about it and yes, I have only enough money to cover outstanding checks.

On another note (a, so we can go to D-mnor or F-major), DRJason wrote this about SWEENEY:
SWEENEY purists will not like this production. But honestly - who wants to pay $100 to see a reproduction of the original show when you can get it on DVD for $25 with the original cast!?!

I love SWEENEY TODD, but the PBS broadcast with Lansbury and Hearn is a poor facsimile of the original:  Len Carious was brilliant and gone, the trapdoors in the floor are missing, several key cast members - Betsy Joslin and Jack Eric Williams, for two - are replaced. and I believe Lansbury's brilliant performance seems broader because she's not playing to the camera but to the last row of the balcony.  The original production, with the exception of what I believe were two poor directing choices by Harold Prince. was truly one of the great experiences in my theatre-going career.

I don't necessarily want to pay $100 for a reproduction of that staging, but I do want to see a SWEENEY TODD that tells the story well, presents the music as wells as possible, and provides a bit of horror along with the laughs (whatever happened to the projected Tim Burton film plans?).  I do want to see this production, but to me it smacks of off-Broadway experimental theatre owing a debt to the CABARET revival which also began outside London's West End, and one more diminishing of a theatre orchestra:  we'll never hear Tunick's great orchestration in a Broadway theatre again.

I like coffee black, no sugar. My son has introduced me to Starbucks. Going to Starbucks is one thing we do together. I find most of their specialties too sweet. So if I have one, I have them make it with half the flavor syrup. Their half-strength white chocolate mochas are good. The pumpkin ones are REALLY good. But  ususally I just order a cup of black coffee.

I live in the desert and we just a endured summer in which I was out in the heat most of the time. So, yes, I do have a bottle of water most of the time. The days I didn't I became ill.

I don't drink coffee any more.  But we do have a tub of coffee ice cream waiting for us in our downstairs freezer.

Swilling liquids while working at the register isn't considered cool.  There really isn't much time to glug anything down, as there is often a line of customers who have a higher priority for my attention.  I'll snag a bottle of Pepsi or the like during my break, and usually only finish about half of it...just as well, since the closest restroom is way in the back of the store, an awkward state of affairs.

The people at Starbucks are, IMO, rude to the point that I won't go there any more.  Starbucks has become the McDonald's of coffee, located everywhere and paying as little as they can to their employees.  I've got better ways of squandering my cash, thank-you very much!

DR JRand55, I am glad you got to see SNOW DEVIL'S. I set my VCR to tape it last night but alas it was set for 12:30 PM instead of AM and now I don't get to see it  >:(

I remember seeing it back in the 1970s on TV.

As for Wild Wild Planet...wait until you see War of the Planets (if TCM shows it)...it DOES have the same cast...and the same sets...in fact both movies were filmed at the same time according to my interviewee, and star of both films, Mr. Tony Russel.

What are your favorite coffee drinks, the ones you must have?

I hate coffee and I try to avoid it. If I must have it, it must have lots of milk sweetner in it so it doesn't taste like coffe.

What are your other favorite liquid refreshments?
A diet soda of some kind. Chocoalte Milk (Lactaid variety)

Do you have to have a bottle of water at the ready fourteen hours a day?

No, but I do try to drink as much water as possible to keep the weight down. (Which I am trying to do and have recently lost some weight on the South Beach Diet)

He was so hopefully bad as The Lone Ranger (despite a huge build up) they had to dub his voice with James Keach. I believe that this is the one and only film he has ever acted in. A fast rise and a crashing fall.

But I guess he will be forever a trivia question

$200 The Answer: James Keach
$300 The Answer: He worked on the sound for this 2001 film
$400 The Answer: His father Max Spilsbury coached this football team.
$500 The Answer: Is a trivia question on the PC game.

It was during this time that Hollywood gossip columnist Joyce Haber starting writing items about the film. Julie and her relationship with Rock and Rock and Blake Edwards and Rock, Blake and the Leather Bars in San Francisco, Julie and Blake and Rock in a menage a trois, Julie and Rock in the Leather Bars in San Francisco. I don't really like coffee but like DR Michael Shayne can and will drink it if I can add Sweet'n Low and milk/creeam to it to blunt the bitterness of the coffee.

Most normally I would have a cup after a big meal at someone's home who's putting on a pot for the group. I will also brew a pot of coffee after I've cooked dinner for a group.

But on an everyday basis, I don't drink it at all, and I would NEVER, EVER spend the outrageous prices people do every day to buy specialty coffees at Starbucks.

As for water, the only time I carry around a water bottle is when I'm rehearsing for a show and want to keep my throat moist while doing a lot of singing.

At home, I switch from diet soda to water usually around 6 p.m. But I drink tap water over ice, not bottled water. Our tap water here tastes perfectly fine (I understand in some places, tap water is undrinkable) so again, I can't see spending money on bottled water when what comes out of the tap is good.

Thanks for the report on DARLING LILI. Always loved the score but thought the spy plot of the movie was fairly dull, and it's never been one of my favorite Julie movies because of that. Still, there are entertaining sequences, and I'm THRILLED that the pieces cut from the film are still available to be seen.

So, just to catch up from last night...

As for Fiddler On the Roof

Harvey is Harvey.  Rosie is Rosie.  And, fortunately, Fiddler is still Fiddler.  It's a very solidly written show, and it takes a lot of "stuff" to diminish it's overall message and effect.  I like the production, and I found myself tearing up a couple of times.

However...  -Yes, there's always a "however"....

I think the presence of Mr. Fierstein and Ms. O'Donnell may actually work against the show in one aspect.  Despite some of their short-comings, they gave very good performances.  Unfortunately, due to their very public and recognizable personas, I felt that the audience wanted to see more of those larger-than-life personas.  They wanted the broad humor, the Funny, the schtick.  In some places in Fiddler that type of approach can work.  In others, not so much.  In some of the more touching moments in the show - especially the Chava sequence - there were giggles here and there in audience.  I felt that people thought Harvey was holding for a laugh, a punchline, when, in reality, he was just in the moment being serious.  There was one young woman in the front row, house right, who just kept laughing - and pointing(!) - at very inappropriate times.  Ugh.  Ah, well...

I still enjoyed the show.  There were a few Jerome Robbins' touches I missed - "To Life" in particular.  And I liked the staging of "Tevye's Dream", but if you're gonna put Fruma Sarah on a wire in the air, then at least have her fly!

The liked the new orchestrations by Larry Hochman, but there were a few things I missed in that regard too.  -I was lucky enough early on in my career to do three productions of Fiddler back to back with full orchestras, so it's sort of in my blood.  But, again, a very good "sweetening" and re-tooling for a smaller - but not that much smaller - pit.

I knew someone would come along to fix my faux pas about the video of SWEENEY. Of course I know it's not the original Broadway cast, but I was too tired to go back and fix it and I knew you all would know what I meant anyway.

Elmore: The production doesn't really have an experimental feel about it as much as it just seems very European. It's darker than the original, and that I liked. I did miss Mr. Tunick's original orchestrations from time to time (I especially missed the brass and percussion in the transition from "No Place Like London" into "Worst Pies in London"), but honestly - I rather liked the new sound. While I love the grand-ness of the original, I've always felt that SWEENEY should be a chamber piece, and now it is. After all, wasn't the play that Sondheim based the show off of a chamber play?

Like I said, the purists won't like it. LuPone is completely different than Lansbury. Cerveris is unlike any Sweeney I've seen. This production cuts some bits here and there but still manages to convey the story, though there is some question about time and location (i.e. you don't really 'get' that Anthony and Sweeney are at the docks at the top of the show), but if you actually listen to the words, you get it.

I was telling Jose and my friend last night, one of the great things about this production is, even with Patti's occassional elisionofanentirephrase, you can hear their voices and understand the lyrics without a great deal of amplification because the orchestration has been thinned out and the instruments aren't mic'ed. And if they are, well...kudos to the sound guys 'cause they sho' don't sound like it.

While I think Mssrs. Prince & Fuller's staging was absolutely wonderful, I think this is a valid production as well and felt quite natural in the O'Neill Theatre.

A lot of people chatter about how much they resent paying a lot of money to see a reproduction of so-and-so's original staging because it's just not as good as the original and where's the creativity and the like. Well, here is a valid, creative, simple and effective and very original production of a wonderful show and I have a feeling that it may not go over well with the critics - professional and arm-chair alike - because it's NOT the original. I just hope everyone gives it a fair chance.

OH!

The one thing that did drive me up the wall last night - again, mainly because of my experience and knowledge of the show - were the transpositions of a lot of the songs.  Even "Far From the Home I Love" was done at least a step down if not two, and then there were Tevye's songs...

A friend of mine played percussion in the pit for a while, and he was there when Harvey first stepped in.  A good chunk of his solos were transposed down - sometimes a step, sometimes two steps... but sometimes down a fourth!  That's quite a transposition!  -I could even detect a few octave transpositions taking place in the orchestration due to the large jump.  And in the songs that were not transposed (that much) - most of the group numbers, he would just sing the original part down an octave.  *And, sonically, that low, the words would just get lost in all the "gravel".

However, there were a few times when he sang in his upper range, and I found those moments to be quite effective.  And more understandable.

Topic of the Day:

I don't drink coffee at home - even though I have a coffee maker, a grinder and a bag of beans in the freezer - but I do drink it from time to time when I'm out.

I do like Starbucks, but sometimes they do get too sweet with their specialty drinks - and the price is a deterrent from time to time. *It's interesting going from neighborhood here in NYC - corner to corner, in fact - and noticing the difference in pricing from location to location.

Black.  One sugar.  Cream.  Milk.  Vanilla sugar.  Valencia (Orange) syrup I've found to be surprisingly good in my coffee.  And I've never met a Frappacino I didn't like.

*And for those DRs who say they don't like coffee, treat yourself to a nice cup of Kona - preferably brewed in a vacuum pot.  Smoooooooth.

Water/liquid-wise... I try to stay hydrated throughout the day.  And when I don't, I definitely feel it.  I will sometimes walk around with a water bottle, but I've never had that much of a problem with tap water/drinking fountains/etc., so there's always a source for agua nearby wherever I am.

I am a sucker for those Vitamin Waters that are everywhere now. They have titles like "Focus," "Revive," "Power C," "Essential." Though the question is begged, what if I want to "focus," but I don't want to drink that particular flavor??

There was an old Letterman on TRIO this morning, from the early 80s, and he had John Carpenter on there talking about THE THING, which was coming out at that time. It was interesting because Letterman and Carpenter both seemed pretty sure THE THING was going to be a big hit, and it really got blasted by critics and flopped. Watching the movie now, I think it has a lot to recommend it.

And a few culinary observations from yesterday's travels around Manhattan....

Hershey's has released a line of Extra Dark Chocolate Bars - plain, with Macadamia Nuts and Cranberries, and with Cranberries, Blueberries, and Almonds.  The display in the Hershey's store is covered with information about the anti-oxidant properties of chocolacte - dark chocolate in particular.  Interesing marketing idea.  And one that will probably sell a few bars.  -Well, I bought two, so...

And also noticed at the Hershey's Store....

Hershey's has acquired Scharffen Berger, the gourmet chocolate line.  I noticed a display in the store, and asked one of the clerks what was up, "Oh, we acquired them last week."  Hmm...

I use Scharffen Berger when I'm cooking and baking goods for special people and occasions.  I'm hoping that this does not mean a possible decline in the quality of Scharffen Berger, and that it's just more of a better distribution deal than anything.  But, time will tell, I guess.

I'm being lazy right now.

How come up until the 90s (or mid to late 80s) we never carried bottles of water on our person?  However did we survive?  And how come it's only been since that time that we're told we must drink so much water?  Somehow we all survived not doing so all these years (at least those of a certain age).  How come pre 1990, we all got along without these Starbuck's type emporiums and drinking endless designer coffees all day long and all night long?

I find it interesting that the following is the story synopsis for the Broadway revival of Edward Albee's Seascape which one the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

On a visit to the seashore, a couple (I am guessing George Grizzard and Frances Sterhagen) debates over the direction in which their lives are headed now that the children are grown. Once they are joined by another couple (Elizabeth Marvell & Frederick Weller), a conversation encompassing life, death, and evolving consciousness ensues.

I find it interesting that there is no mention that the other couple are lizards. Of course unless Albee has rewritten the play like he did Virginia Woolfe

I try to avoid Starbuck's, unless some friends want to stop there, but the reason has nothing to do with corperate greed (etc.).  I just don't go there because there coffee beans taste burnt.  I would much rather got to a Tully's, a Seattle's Best, or a Fox Hollow and have some good coffee.

Re MBarnum traveling with his own cereal - Is there something unusual about traveling with your own breakfast stuff?  I do it when I'm staying at hotels or motels,  but especially when I'm staying at someone else's home since I never know whether trying to do breakfast in a "strange place" will be inconvenient to the schedules of other people.  Of course, there is the possibility of just skipping a meal or two, but that would be a little drastic.  :)

I only appreciate Starbucks when I’m desperate for a bathroom.  I figure Keith goes there enough I don’t need to feel guilty.  He prefers Peet’s Coffee.  Who has a Peet’s near them.  We have a drive through coffee place here called The Human Bean.  Keith and Bryan say it is excellent.

I treated myself to hot Ghirardelli chocolate & coco this morning.  Keith steamed the milk and I added some Western marshmallows.  Western marshmallows are really Campfire marshmallows and are oh so delicious.

Tomorrow promises to be a weird day at the office.  It's the final deadline including extensions for tax return filing (normally Oct. 15th, but this year it's Oct. 17th since the 15th was on the weekend).  But the firm generally took the attitude that if a client's info wasn't in by last Friday. their return would just have to go out late.  One of the bosses has balked at this, insisting on getting client's returns out tomorrow even if they're still being worked on tomorrow despite it being the client's fault for not getting us the info by last Friday.  While the client is normally right :) providing this kind of service and driving the staff crazy of course shows clients that they can procrastinate until the very end and the firm's employees will kill themselves to get it done in time.  So we train our clients that it's OK to procrastinate, so why should they try to be timely in the future?

Felt good to rant.  Thanks if anyone actually read that.

If I could afford it, I would start every day with a 20 oz. Mocha, but the realities of the world prevent that.  i do make a pot of coffee every morning, and on work days i drink one cup while I am getting ready, and then take the rest of the pot in a thermus to work.  I use a flavored creamer , usually French Vanilla, but don't add any extra sugar.  I do not drink coffee after noon, becuase no matter how tired I may be, it will always keep me awake.  I very rarely drink cola of any kind.  I  prefer 7-Up, or Sierra Mist, either regular of diet.  I don't care for Sprite.  At home, in the evening, I usually drink cranberry juice, mixed with diet 7-Up.

Ever since I was hsopitalized for a kidney stone, back in the 1970s, I have tried to lessen their impact on me, by drinking, at least, 8 glassed of water (bottle or tap) per day.

First up was IN OLD CHICAGO which played as I was preparinjg lunch. Alice Faye sang more in it than I remembered, and Tyrone Power seemed smaller and less of stature than in some of his other Fox starring vehicles. They must have started padding his coats a bit more in later films. Of course, once he returned from the war having served as a Marine, I suspect he didn't need any shoulder padding.

After I finished IN OLD CHICAGO and my lunch, I settled in with FINDING NEVERLAND.

It's a beautiful film, enchantingly conceived and put together with great care and love by everyone. For those of us who are intimately involved in theater, this film is an absolute must. From about the midpoint of the film until the end, I had tears in my eyes, both of delight (the magical premiere of PETER PAN on stage is so brilliantly captured) and, of course, of sadness too as the film, just like life, conveys good and bad moments which we can all experience.

I will be ordering a copy of this as soon as I leave the forum.

One of the high definition cable channels was showing THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS this afternoon, so I thought I watch at least part of it to see how upconverted films look in high definition.

Pretty stunning, I'd say. I was able to pick out George Chakiris in those hoards of chorus boys backing up both Donald O'Connor and later Mitzi Gaynor in the "Alexander's Ragtime Band" number. I'm sure I have seen him before in the routines, but never before had I been able to make out his face in the background when he's three or four rows behind the soloist. That's how crisp an effect high definition has on viewing details.

Correct. Of course, it was called the 46th Street Theater then. When I went to see the original CHICAGO (which I loved, BTW, and couldn't understand why it wasn't selling out), I thought the seats there then were the most uncomfortable I had ever sat in at any NYC theater.

When I went back for THE MUSIC MAN a few years ago, they either had replaced the seats or my "sitter" had become more cushioned over the years because I was much more comfortable in that theater.

I have finally caught up with all the posts that I hadn't read since yesterday.  After I came home from work yesterday, I went to my sister's for a while and when I came home, I did nothing but watch TV.  Actually, tapes of shows that I hadn't watched in the last couple of weeks.  I watched the latest episodes of "Boston Legal," "Ghost Whisperer," "Lost," "Threshold," "Surface" and "Invasion."  I've decided to give up trying to watch "Supernatural."  I had taped four episodes and haven't watched any...and for some reason (the attractiveness of the actors, notwithstanding), I don't care.  Oh, well.  Like I've said before, there are more hour-long shows that I want to watch this season than there have been in quite a long time.

As for sit-coms, I watched two episodes of "Life With Earl" (I like this show), "Living With Fran" (just okay...but I like Fran), "How I Met Your Mother" (this last episode didn't bother me as much as others, here on HHW ;)) and "Out of Practice" (I really like this show).  I also caught the new show "Hot Properties" with Gail O'Grady and Nicole Sullivan.  I thought it was pretty funny.  Not absolutely hilarious, but there are worse shows on right now. ::)

And it was actually quite nice.  Apparently it is their tradition for people to bring lots of food to the funeral home.  So I did just that.

I enjoyed "Steel Pier" yesterday. Great production  and a talented young cast.  Sure the Book has problems and the first act is long (90 minutes) but the show was to me very entertaining. "An old fashioned musical" . It did help knowing the show from the OBC recording and I know many of the theatre goers found it hard to follow and to have emotional involvment with the characters. For me there is an emotional pay off in the Second Act. I also wonder if it would make a better film musical than a stage one. Perhaps a musical "They Shoot horse Don't They" would work.

Sunday evening greetings from SW Ohio!  We went to lunch in the dining room at my mother-in-law's retirement community and had a very nice meal and visit with her.  She then went grocery shopping with us, after which I came home and took a nap.

TOD - I must start the day with several cups of plain black coffee - nothing fancy, just strong and hot.  I do like the fancy hot and cold beverages at Starbucks, but prefer the skinny versions, no whipped cream, and not the real sweet concoctions.  Several years ago we toured the Celestial Seasonings plant in Boulder, Colorado, and became quite fond of several of their teas - my favorite is Almond Sunset.  Very little soda pop is consumed in our household, but we do keep Canada Dry flavored (lemon-lime and raspberry) sparkling water on hand.  At work, I drink only bottled water, because I will not use the same public fountains as our clientele ( :P) and we keep bottled water at home, too, because our city water is pretty foul.  For that reason, we also purchase our ice - when cubes made from our city water melt in the bottom of a glass they leave behind a fuzzy residue (also  :P).

And that's basically the report.  It was/is a bad show.  But it's not an "overtly" bad show.  Lots of talent, lots of money... But just blah and middling to the nth degree.  I don't have any real feelings about the show - positive or negative.  And then there's "Winston" who basically provides the out for the mediocrity of the show.  So...

I guess I'm glad I saw it.

Evening all!

I guess today was in fact an unofficial National Laundry Day as that was how I spent most of mine as well.  Only I did mine at the laundry mat.  It did help to have at least four machines going at one time and I was finished with both the home laundry and the trip laundry pretty quickly.

I also made some home made vegetable beef soup.  For whatever reason, I didn’t care for it.  I don’t know what I did wrong but it just didn’t taste right to me.  Mom said it was fine—except that didn’t have enough salt for her taste.  I have been trying to cut down on it and since Mom always put tons of it in and on anything she cooked, that might be what I was “missing”.

TOY (Topic of Yesterday).  I’ve never been anything really ritzy.  I didn’t even go to my high school prom.  I guess that was another reason why I was sort of disappointed when I first went to NY.  I thought if one went to the theater, one dressed to the nines.  I remember how scared I was that the dresses I had bought wouldn’t be good enough to pass though the doors but I was so looking forward to seeing people dressed up.   It was quite a let down to find one could show up in jeans.

TOD Coffee, yuck.  I think I have made my views on it known before.

After my surgery on Thursday, no more sodas of any kind and no black tea (I can have Green tea, thank goodness!).   I do drink water and lemonade.  I guess I shall be adding more fruit juices (like Cranberry) to my list.

I adore dark chocolate.  Always have.  That’s one of the reasons I like the “honeycomb” or “sponge” (as you New Yorkers call it) candy—It’s coated in dark chocolate.  Yummers!

I believe that DR Charles Pogues Hercules is on the Sci Fi Channel.  I have Tivo set to record it.

I finished Rewind last night.  I enjoyed it but am glad that it is a work of fiction.

I woke up at about three and couldn’t go back to sleep (no gasping, please, that’s not polite  ;D) so I went into the living room and began to read.

I did sleep quite late yesterday morn-noon.  The week just caught up to me.  Now that I'm getting caught up on all of the household chores and such, I will look forward to my recovery week off so I can work on my pictures and a few other projects I have in mind.

I love feel good movies.  The one I saw today was absorbing, well acted, and with interesting special effects and cinematography.  I also liked Bill Paxton’s direction.  If you missed my earlier post the film is THE GREATEST GAME EVER, the basically true story of the 1913 US Open and the event that popularized American golf.

We had a new experience at the theater.  The young teen sitting next to me would vigorously shake her popcorn which in turn shook our row of seats.  She only had a small bag of popcorn but with all that shaking it lasted through most of the movie. ??? ;D

All right, someone needs to tell me if this is a holiday, because I am just not getting it.  Not getting yesterday, not getting today.  Is everyone so busy sucking on their water bottles and drinking their triple mocha jamocha lattes that they have deserted us.

Ever since I was hsopitalized for a kidney stone, back in the 1970s, I have tried to lessen their impact on me, by drinking, at least, 8 glassed of water (bottle or tap) per day.

One of many good reasons to drink plenty of water!!

I don't have to have bottled water...tap water is fine for me, usually. I do pick up bottled water no and then, mainly just so I can have the bottles to fill up at home and have with me whilst in the car. It is very unseemly to get thirsty whilst driving an not have anything to quench it with.

Coffee I very much enjoy, but I am not particular with that either...at work I normally drink Folger's or some other type of instant coffee...but I do think that Seattle's Best is quite good and Starbucks is OK as well, but really I am happy with just about any brand of coffee...and if for some reason it doesn't taste very good then I will put cream or milk in it.

I never became attached to the fancier coffee drinks like frappacinos or mochas., although for awhile I was really into those Irish Creams coffees! Yum!

Taylor and I had fun at the Wallace and Gromit movie...it was a cute show and had many references to old horror films like King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, and The Wolf Man.

After the movie we went to Uwajimiya Grocery store...I told Taylor that HELLO KITTY lived there...and it was close to the truth as they have a HUGE selection of Hello Kitty items...which of course Taylor loves! However, Taylor really had her eye on a Japanese umbrella...green and pink with oriental flowers...she sure smiled when I offered to buy it for her!

The we ate lunch at the Sushi place next door...she quite enjoyed the Flying Fish Roe...although she had no idea what it was! LOL!

As DR Jose said, IN MY LIFE was mediocrity at its blandest. As the poster says, "When life gives you lemons...make a musical!" Oy!

I was going to do my laundry tonight, too, but by the time I got home it was time for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (a real weepy one tonight) and I wasn't feeling all that well, so I decided to stay in. I don't know why I feel badly - I don't think I'm getting sick, but my cheeks have just been really flushed and warm the last couple of nights. I guess it's the temperature changes outside. And it's 20 degrees in my room right now - the heat hasn't been turned on yet.

Safe travel vibes for DR Jose tomorrow!!

And I've been feeling quite wiped-out since I got back from dinner too.  I even took a 20 minute nap.  I think it is the drastic change in the weather.  And the suddenly VERY dry air...

Don't forget to drink your water!

Rather than start on SIDEWAYS, I put in the DVD of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

This is one of the all-time greats, and it's beautiful and sad, and moving, and every other emotion all rolled into one.

The world would be a far worse place without that masterpiece novel or that splendid movie version.

Naturally the NFL game ran overtime which pushed COLD CASE back an entire hour. Since I already have three shows that come on at 9 p.m., I'm afraid it just had to be omitted this week. I'd say last season, I missed a good 10 programs during their initial runs because of football runover. Naturally, I caught up with them during the plentiful reruns that dot the schedule during the season.

spoiler--

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some intriguing plots with Bree/George/Andrew, currently the only one of the wives whose storyline is at all interesting.

(Well, Alfre Woodard's storyline WOULD be interesting but she wasn't even on the episode tonight!)

I have to say that Lynette's storyline is worse than dull to me, that Susan's is irritating because of the lies (just like daytime soaps which would stop functioning if folks would just tell the truth and not keep secrets from those they claim to love), and Carlos and Gabrielle are in limbo. The new lawyer was a snake (but blandly handsome), but I guess he'll be the new fox in Gabrielle's hen house.

I missed the hunky Richard Burgi, too.

CROSSING JORDAN seemed to be introducing new potential love interests for Jordan and Lily tonight. Made the cases take on another dimension, and I enjoyed them.

As for Woody (Jerry O'Connell), he needs to visit Christopher Meloni/Elliot Stabler's anger management counselor!

I guess I'm going to start a systematic checking of my older Universal DVDs to see if they're still playable on my equipment.

Tonight was TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Tomorrow will be OUT OF AFRICA. I probably won't be watching the entire films. Just get them started and then skips to a favorite scene or two.

Ann has finally caught up.  I've been E&T, as I thing Jed mentioned, because we went across the mountains to see a production of The Last 5 Years.  A dear friend of his was playing Cathy.  We were warned about how awful the guy playing Jamie would be, and we were both pleasantly surprised that he wasn't really that bad.  Miscast, to be sure, but plainly trying his best to tackle some very difficult music.  At any rate, it was an enjoyable trip.  Now I am home, caught up, and full of pasta with some of the homemade pesto we got when we stopped at my dad's house :)

Hello I just got caught up.  Toiday we had church, then Sunday School and then a little celebration for our pastor who was celebrating  the 35th anniversary of his ordination.

Then there was grocery shopping.  A little nip was inthe air so the Vixter and I decided that a nice homemade beef stew was in order.

It came out really well, everything nice and tender and flavorful without anything gettig too mushy, with no burning on the boittom by forgetting to stir, or lower the heat, the gravy was just right, not too thin or thick or salty and we made a huge pot of it so we can have seconds and maybe even thirds over the week! (Which means warming up  instead of cooking and still getting a nice meal!)

Since all of yesterday was "lost " to the "wedding without peer"  i spent the rest of the day doing laundry ands I'm not entirely done yet.

Ah well at least I was not alone in my laundrying!!

Well, I think this is my schedule...

Tomorrow - Head down to DC
Tuesday-Sunday - Play keyboard 3 for the Joseph at the Warner Theatre
Next Monday or Tuesday - Return to NYC
Sometime after that, head back down to DC to start Damn Yankees - rehearsals start November 8.  Close February 5.
Start Lestat rehearsals in NYC around February 12.

I think that's the general schedule for now.

IN MY LIFE. Well, the bar is so low these days, I give credit for anyone doing a musical that is not based on some movie or TV show or other musical. It has some winning cast members and colorful, engaging sets. One, maybe one and a half decent songs. The rest kinda blah. Mainly, it has no real courage to be anything in particular, and relies on a lot of cheap gags over real plot. Some of the gags are amusing, but there was no coherence, really. Typical evidence of ideas partially removed, concepts half-arsed, incomplete, dangling...

I went expecting a disaster, but secretly hoping to like it. It failed on both counts.

To respond to the TOTD -

I adore coffee, particularly espresso drinks.  I confess to having a fondness for Starbucks, although I rarely indulge due to financial limitations.  Like my cyberfather, I would love nothing more than to start my day with a large drink...I'd go for a vanilla latte, personally.  In my hometown there is a coffee company called D&M coffee, which is bar none the best coffee and espresso I've ever tasted.

These days I have my powdered vanilla coffee to start my day, and ocasionally a Starbucks vanilla latte if I'm feeling rich :)

MattH,  I agree on THE THING. To me, a very scary and suspenseful movie. Carpenter took a lot of guff for making the special effects a little too grotesque. But that's how it is with parasitic aliens.

Ty Power really went through a physical transformation. In those early movies like IN OLD CHICAGO and the Sonja Henie films, he's slight, boyish, then his features got a bit more rugged and squared off.
