Well, you've read the notes, you don't want any starch in the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home from doing their laundry.

TOTD. As a School Teacher I always found ways to be in charge of my own class room world without interference from a Boss.  My School Principals really had very little effect on my days.

Now that Ann has gone to bed, I am all caught up post-wise.  As she reported, we enjoyed The Last 5 Years more than we expected.  Nothing outstanding, but certainly decent, and was wonderful to see some good friends of mine.  A bonus to our trip across the state is that a visit with her father resulted in us being stocked up with tomatoes, pesto, raspberry jam, and a raspberry pie (all homemade, of course).

ToD

A manager at my store was so bad that she drove away customers and caused many people to transfer or quit and she was a "female dog" to boot.Well karma kicked in when she was forced to resign for cooking the books.

Last night, I watched one of my favorite films “ In The Mood for Love”, a Hong Kong film. The peculiar mood that the sensualism and the spiritualism and the extreme stoicism are intermingled, which the film has, holds a special attraction for me.  And I love Maggie Cheung who has a beautiful thin neck, wearing many different gorgeous Chinese dresses which are snug-fitted on(?) her in the film.

Good morning, all!  I love this weather.  I believe it's what the weather station would call brisk autumn weather, and I sleep quite nicely because of it.

Yesterday I watched the British psychological thriller THE QUEEN OF SPADES with Anton Walbrook and Edith Evans, so amazing that I cannot imagine anyone else playing her role.  As an additional bonus, I listened to the first act of Tchaikovsky's opera based on the same Pushkin story.  I also watched a bit of Kenneth Branagh's production of TWELFTH NIGHT, with Frances Barber, but I think I prefer Trevor Nunn's film version with Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham-Carter.

TOD:  I've had only two really wonderful ones, so I believe lousy employers are the nature of the beast:
  1.  Dudley Inwood: the employees called him Deadly Inwood
  2.  Sally Hassenfelt, a bully who replaced the late Bill Tynes as producer of The New Amsterdam Theatre Company.

Topic of the day:  Since I'm set to experience a day of hell at work today, trying to rush out last-minute returns for clients who just got their info in over the weekend, the temptation is to blame the boss who made this happen.  But I won't.  He (like all my current bosses) has so many great qualities, including being considerate of time (except in busy season, which is really only three months of the year), considerate financially, normally really caring about employees as people rather than just cogs to do the work.  This particular guy's one block is that he doesn't want to push his clients to get their info in until it's really the last minute, and the clients could just as easily have spent the time to get the info together two or three weeks ago as they could have this past Friday or Saturday, but in the word of a recent word of the day, the clients procrsatinate because this boss refuses to say they won't get their returns on time if they don't hurry up.  So while I'm feeling in work hell today, I wouldn't rank any of my current bosses as a bad boss overall, just too considerate of his clients in one case.

My boss from hell was about 15-20 years ago at the place before my current place.  That boss would go around calling people "f**ing retards" and such, and would say things like how it's a good thing faggots can't give blood.  Luckily, he was really my boss' boss, so I didn't have to report directly to that man too often.

TOD The worst one was a guy who I worked for when I was a supervisor at UPS he made impossible demands.  As well as being responsible for m\beingin my office and getting all the computers up and running and hour before my staff came in  (this was the late 70's - early 80's) when  there were not enough drivers  ( at least 1 -2 times a week) we superviors had to suit up deliever a full load, often on what they called 'splits" which meant you didn't have a normal route that coverd consecutive areas but rather were spread out over maybe 15 or 20 miles.  Then you had to come back and do all your office work and then there were the twice  weekly audits we were required to make on the night shift /overnight night shift sort and loading areas (the facility ran 24 hours  with two evening shifts and we had to perform audits on both shifts).  A normal work day was 12 - 18 hours  and at least 2 - 4 times a month I would work 24 hours straight . In additon to  the ridiculous demands and fault finding he was  evil and did it all with a smile.  It was such a  terrible atmosphere that I finally quit .  Too bad... if I had been able to stick with it about 18 months a bit longer I would have see him kicked out for sexual harrasment of another female supervisor.

Those that stayed and sold all their stock (supervisors were given stock , but it was privately held and when you left you had to return the stock for $$)  made big time bucks when UPS finally "went public".  many people I worked with then retired in their early 40's as multimillionaires

Ah well....

There were two belly dancers who did a 30 - 45 minute show at the wedding I attended on Saturday.

The father of the bride also has them at his Christmas parties he throws every year.  I have no ide how they manage to make their bodies move like that.. they must be hinged differently than mione!!

Absolutely loved THE QUEEN OF SPADES. I saw it for the first time in a film class I took in the 1970s, and I was blown away by it.

Edith Evans has always been a favorite, and this is one of her best film roles.

My worst boss I believe I've talked about before.

During my 30 years in teaching, I had only three principals, and the last one (for my last five years of teaching) was by far the worst. He was a spineless boss who'd make stupid decisions and even when faced with their not working, would not retract them and we'd be stuck and miserable with some untenable ideas that made life much more difficult at school.

He was also the boss who wouldn't confront personnel who were doing wrong but rather would call EVERYONE into a faculty meeting and criticize the entire faculty for the misdeeds of a few. Completely destroyed morale, I can tell you! It made leaving a GIANT relief when I finally retired.

Mornin'...

I don't want to be at work today. I had to take some ibuprofen last night for my headache and, surprisingly, it didn't upset my stomach. Until now. And my cheeks are still flushed. I don't want to be here.

I've had my fill of bad bosses. One of them was murdered. No, really - she was. Her husband, who was an even nastier SOB than she was - hired someone to kill her. Quite scandalous for Paducah, KY.

I hesitate to speak ill of my current employers. Wait, no I don't! Seriously - they're nice people outside of the office. IN the office, however, is a whole other matter. This is an office run by entertainment lawyers and washed-up, bitter actors - a recipe for a "happy" work environment if I ever heard one. My immediate supervisor is moodier than I am, if you can imagine, and seems to have some particular bone to pick with me, though I don't know what  it is or why. He's never called us "f**king retards." He just likes to make us FEEL like f**king retards and tends to condescend to us as if we're 12 year olds. My biggest beef with him is that he never takes any responsibility and rarely backs any of us up when there's a problem. He never wants to speak to the angry customers. He doesn't want to be bothered with complicated issues and CAN'T be bothered with the simple ones. He tells us he wants us to make our own decisions, but wants to be asked before anything can be done. Basically, he's a bundle of contradictions and it drives me batty.

Glad you enjoyed THE ESCAPE ARTIST. It is somewhat of a heartbreaking movie for me, because it has the potential to be one of the all-time greats. But something happened along the way, the tampering and such you mention, and it doesn't really connect the dots. But such a great atmosphere and great moments and performances, it really haunts the mind.

AND, you get another of the rare glimpses of Gabriel Dell as an adult actor, and see just how criminally underutilized a talent he was.

Me and m'Lady Moon go a long way back.

Dan's Song

Observe his flame,
That placid dame,
The moon's Celestial Highness;
There's not a trace
Upon her face
Of diffidence or shyness:
She borrows light
That, thro' the night,
Mankind may all acclaim her!
And, truth to tell,
She lights up well;
So I, for one, don't blame her.
Ah, pray make no mistake,
We are not shy;
We're very wide awake,
The moon and I!
Ah, pray make no mistake,
We are not shy;
We're very wide awake,
The moon and I!

I'm up, I'm up.  Who wouldn't be up with all this thundering that's going on.  Thunder is fairly rare in the City of Studio.  It rained last night, and is drizzling this morning.  But I see the sun trying to break through, so who knows what will happen.  Only the Shadow.

Re The Escape Artist, I have vague memories that it didn't preview well or something - something happened, and it sat for quite a while.  At one point in the commentary, they say that One From the Heart was shot AFTER The Escape Artist, so considering The Escape Artist didn't escape until 1982 (or maybe even a bit later), then that means it sat on the shelf.  I'm going to listen to the rest of the commentary to see if they elaborate.

I am so glad that you liked Neverland.  I found myself thinking about it for days afterwards and going back and rewatching bits of it .   It was such a bittersweet sotry and I loved the understated way Mr. Depp played the scenes between himself and the actress playing his wife

....and the opening night scene was wonderful (Mr. Barrie's ingenious solution to see that the play was received in the correct spirit).  I have been trying to find out if that was based on fact or if it was a wonderful piece of fiction  with no success.

I won three rather interesting eBay auctions this past weekend.

I "think" I won original posters (half sheets) for "How to Marry a Millionaire' and "Singin' in the Rain" and a reissue full-color insert for "Babes on Broadway."

It's a bit early to tell.  The seller simply did not know.  An estate was being auctioned, off, but the posters had been around since the 50s (in the estate-holder's home) and had been framed under glass.  The sizes are certainly right.

I paid under $150 for the lot, so....we shall see what we shall see.

And the special features on the 2nd DVD are very entertaining and interesting (for the most part).

Some of the stuff is, of course, geared toward little girls, but much of it is of interest to anyone who loves Disney.

There's a segment from a show with Perry Como on which Ilene Woods and The Fontaine Sisters present a preview of the movie in words and song.  Perry gets the story details a bit wrong (the mice who made a dress for Cinderella did not do it at the bidding of the Fairy Godmother).

And there's another feature with a clip from a 1955 episode of the The Mickey Mouse Club....it's too much.  Way too much.  All the little Mouseketeers site in a row and make mouse sounds while manipulating their Mouseketeer ears!

Woof.

Last night's "Desperate Housewives":

SPOILER POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!

Is it just me or have the writers seemingly gone off the deep end?  First, I had a great deal of trouble last night even caring what was going on.

There's way too much in the way of convolution of plot...and there's no resolution of one thing while setting up another.  It's just a huge series of set-ups.

And the characters are becoming less and less interesting to me.

I fear this show may have peaked, so to speak, in cleverness and edginess.

The Scunci can be viewed online.  It's easy to use.  I refilled it once in the bathroom.  I used it only on my stove and surrounding countertops in the kitchn.

The water/steam lasts a decent while.

Among the features of the "Cinderella" DVD are a bunch of demo songs that did not make the final cut.

It's with good reason, too, as they are all simply not in the same league as the songs in the movie.

I couldn't get "into" any of them, although a number of them had interesting animation concepts.  Walt, himself, said no to them.  He had great musical instincts (until that lapse in the 60s with "The Happiest Millionaire" and "The One and Only Original Family Band".

I'm actually quite fond of "I'm in the Middle of a Muddle."  The laser disc of ALICE IN WONDERLAND includes a demo of a song that was given a much better new lyric for PETER PAN:  "The Second Star from the Right."

Good Afternoon!...

Sorry to have been errant and truant so far today... I allowed myself to sleep in a little bit - just needed the rest.  And I've also been cleaning up my soon-to-be old room here at the apartment - and not rushing while doing it.  I'll be leaving a couple of boxes of stuff up here, and over the next few weeks, I'll be making one or two trips back up here with my car (I guess that means I'm keeping it for now) to bring stuff back (and forth).  So...

I just booked my Amtrak ticket, and I'll be taking the 4:05 train from Penn Station.  I'm almost done here, but, again, I just didn't want to feel I had to rush.  -As long as I'm at the stage door of the National Theatre by 10:00 tomorrow morning...

I'll catch up once I'm back down in Fairfax later tonight...

Until then, I hope everyone is having a good day, in good health, and in good spirits.

Laters...

OY!

(that refers to my efforts to wish DRJose god travel vibes)!  On another note, I think this is what I have to say about REWIND:

Bruce Kimmel's latest pice of legerdemain, REWIND is lark of a mystery.   It's characters are vivid show biz types from stars to wannabes, from loyal friends to royal screws, from those with the money to the ones who need the investment.  Several deserve to die, and a few do.    Mr Kimmel's experiences in the recording studio give the book a lively reality, which only adds to the fun.  To say more would be spoiling the surprises.

I agree - "Gray's Anatomy" is proving to be on of the best new shows in several years. And I thought Sandra Oh's performance in last night's episode was award-worthy.  I also love seeing CAROLINE, OR CHANGE's Chandra Wilson on the show. Her performance last night was wonderful, as well.

There's a showbiz story from "Camelot" that was told, I believe, by Julie Andrews.  I either read it or heard her tell in TV.

During "The Lusty Month of May" number, there was a large dog (sheep dog??) on stage.  One evening, the dog took a huge dump on stage just prior to:

"Whence this fragrance wafting through the air?
What sweet feelings does its scent transmute?
Whence this perfume floating ev'rywhere?
Don't you know it's that dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la, tra la, that dear forbidden fruit!"

IIRC, Andrews said she briefly held her nose while singing that and got a huge laugh.

Laughing at my eBay nemesis department:  I am frequently sniped by another Farmer fan on eBay.  He bought a Frances Farmer photo (from another seller) for almost $500 a few weeks ago (yes, evidently some people are even more obsessed than I--hard to believe, I know).  I hadn't bid on that particular auction because it just so happened I had an extra copy of the same photo.  I just auctioned it for $9.99 to one of the underbidders on that auction.  And I know he was watching the auction, LOL.  ;)   Somehow it makes me laugh to see him paying hundreds of dollars for something that's readily available for 10.  Petty, yes, but highly amusing.

Speaking of ticking sounds, I've been hearing, over the weekend, this extremely annoying ticking-chattering sound.  It was a pattern...almost like an amplified insect noise (chicada-like).

I was beside myself trying to find it.  I thought something had gotten into the house.

Turns out....it's the first time my "weatherbug" feature on my computer has been issuing local weather alerts (gale-force winds in the hills).  And as I leave my computer on all day, I was being treated to the "alert" noises "Weatherbug" issues.

Now that I know, the speakers will remain "off" unless I'm using the computer.

I have nemeses, too.  There is one who bids on a wide variety of things...and I've been outbid many times by this entity since he or she first started out.  Over the past couple of years, this person's purchases have gone into the thousands.  It's either a very serious, wealthy collector, or someone who has gone into business.

The name I won't print here, but it bears the devilish nomenclature for the demon in "The Exorcist".

Every now and again, I encounter others who have bid on similar items.  Some even e-mail me and ask me if I'd sell the item to them when I get it.

That always amazes me....like they think I had no use for it, but bid on it anyway?

I've written amazon about the review problem (the reviews are only showing up on the hardcover listing, and they should be showing up on both) - it doesn't really matter what listing you do the review for - it should show up on both and hopefully they will fix this problem soon.  Naturally, I haven't heard back from them.

I watched LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT this afternoon, the second of the Chris Noth-starring episodes. I like the fact that he had such a long history with the original LAW & ORDER and the writers are able to exploit that in setting up plots and characters in this new variation of the show where Noth is playing is original character.

Yes, you did.  I'm hopelessly/helplessly not caught up.

Susan's final scene disappointed me tremendously.  I knew she was needy, but did not realize her selfishness would result in her being treacherous toward the man she supposedly loves.  I understand the desire to keep Zach (emotionally immature though he is) away from her daughter, but she owed Mike the chance he needs to confront his son and tell him the truth.

I liked Bree's son last night, but the Bree/Howard thing doesn't do a thing for me.

I, for one, am just a tad bit concerned about the pending "big one"!

I'm seriously considering boxing things up and just living "out of" those boxes for a while...getting my CDs and DVDs off shelves/racks and into containers that won't fall over and spill out....

Very rare quakes - on the oldest continent. There are fault lines and tremors occur. The city of Newcastle had a quake some years ago (20?) where there was considerable damage and I think some loss of life. It is not a high rise city though. (Coastal New South Wales north of Sydney).

Is that the little handheld one?  I have been thinking of getting one.  Is it easy to use?  Does it have to be refilled and reheated constantly?

I got a handheld Steamfast steamer a couple of months ago. And it is the best new cleaning tool I've found in a while.

It lets you really clean without using chemicals.  And it is actually fun and easy.

Hoy, what a day at work!

At 9:30 am some workers cut a cable which took down our computers (including internet), cut off our phones, and in parts of our office, cut off the electricity. We weren't back to normal until 3:30pm.

Didn't get a lot done at work today! LOL!

You can always count on me!  Unless, of course, I'm out of town with a job.

I've just finished a yummilicious Artie's dinner from a mysterious benefactor.  It was a hale and hearty chicken dinner with some yummy mixed vegetables and a fantastic baked potato.  I'm going to scream poverty more often.

For the record, one of the checks did arrive today, looking from the envelope as if it had been misdirected.

Thank you, O beneficent one!

Yeah, I know, Jane, but when you choose to get married in January what can you expect?  Actually, one of the best times Richard and I ever had in NYC was when we went on Christmas Day and stayed until New Year's Day.  It was cold, but we had a great time, even standing in the TKTS line.  We saw 8 shows in 7 days on that trip!

Ginny we froze in Williamsburg and still had a wonderful time.  That is a lot of shows in a short period of time.

I felt a bit cheated I didn’t time to see more shows in NY.  It’s tough to do when you are busy visiting with friends.  At least I saw the show I most wanted to see and got to the museums this trip.

Evening folks!  Just jumping in with a real quick “Hi” tonight before I sign off.

What a busy day it has been!

I did want to wish Dan-in-Toronto a very, very, very happy birthday!  You are missed!

Good travel vibes to DR Jose!

Good Check vibes to DR Elmore!

Happy Anniversary to DR VixMom and Dad!

And BK, I do hope that you know NOT to take a shower during a lightning storm!  It’s dangerous!  No messing around a sink, no taking a bath, no going into the pool, no talking on the phone and no standing near a large glass window!  I live in the lightning capital of the world and those little safety tips have been drummed into my head since I was a kid!

Truly, please do be careful.  Lightning is nothing to play with.

On that bright note, have a wonderful evening all!  Just call me "Flash"!   ;) :D

Thanks to Elmore's mentioning it this morning, I put THE QUEEN OF SPADES in the player tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it again. It's been years since I had seen it and had forgotten quite a bit of it.

The DVD looked marvelous. Really, I only noticed one scratch running down the right side of the frame for about 30 seconds. Otherwise, it looked wonderful.

CSI: MIAMI had a fun case tonight that featured three different scenarios for the same murder with three different perps. It was fun seeing all the clues eventually get sorted out to wind up with the correct killer.

And, for a change, I identified the correct murderer by about the halfway point in the story.

EXTRAS had a funny/irritating episode. Prejudice seemed to be the theme, and the black-white episodes (one with Samuel L. Jackson) were funnier than the gay-straight episode (I think it was gay-straight; the writing was muddy and not exactly precise about the orientation of the man in question) which came off as sour, tactless, and basically unnecessary.

Good Evening!  ..once again...

Greetings from Fairfax.

I managed to get everything packed up for my trip, and "compacted" the rest of my stuff at the apartment before hopping on the A down to Penn Station.  And it looks like I should be able to fetch the rest of my stuff with just one trip up and back.  -It's was kind of amazing to realize that I was able to live and function with relatively little "stuff".  But I guess that's actually a good thing, progress of a sort.  However, I am looking forward to settling down in NYC once I'm back there in February, and being able to "spread out" a bit.

In any case...

My 4:05 train didn't end up leaving until around 4:40.  In the meantime, the 4:30 train - which I almost booked - did leave on time.  Ah, well... What can you do?  The trip down was uneventful, and I managed to get a good nap in too.  We arrived at Union Station a little after 8:00, and I was at the Dunn Loring Metro stop at 9:00 where my Dad picked me up.

We made a stop at the big Korean supermarket on the way back home since he needed to buy some food and supplies for work.  They had some amazing sales on produce - gallon containers of strawberries for $5.99, eight mangoes for $3.99, baby bok choy for $0.18/pound!  I managed to pick up some vegetables for my late dinner, as well as some snacks for the week.  -And then it was off to KFC to pick up the rest of dinner.

All is well is here at home.  I think my parents still don't believe that I'm actually living in New York City.  ;)  And, "sadly" they didn't seem at all excited that I booked a Broadway show.  They recognized "Elton John", but they did not identify with "Anne Rice", "The Vampire Lestat", nor "The Palace Theatre".  So...  But they're happy I'm employed - which, in the long run, is a good thing for me in the sense that it will hopefully stop those still-nagging, "Why don't you get a computer job?" questions.  Parents... Gotta love 'em.

;)

Topic of the Day...

I don't think I've ever really had a bad boss, well, at least a really bad boss.  And the one possible bad boss that I can think of right now was only "bad" due to the corporate requirements for the office.  Otherwise, I've had decent bosses.  I have had to deal with some slightly inept and disorganized conductors, but I think that's the norm for conductors.  ;)

DR Jane - The sampler for In My Life is not that bad.  However, just multiply that CD by about five or six times, and you have the equivalent for the complete score of the show.  There's just so much "same".  And the few attempts at variety and change of pace are either poorly written and/or were written for previous projects.  *The one god-awful (pun intended if you've seen the show) moment for me is when the Dr. Pepper jingle is tweaked to become a "serious" moment about life and death.  Eh...

How rude of me - I forgot to wish a happy anniversary to DR Vixmom and her DH.

I also forgot to wish DR DiT a very happy birthday.

Skammen!

I'm feeling MUCH better than I was earlier today and I will be sojourning back into work tomorrow. Skammen. :)

I had an odd/disconcerting/maddening chat with my roommate tonight. She has decided to leave "the biz" and find a "real" job. So far she has applied for jobs as a jewelry clerk, administrative assistant, book seller and Dream Maker for the Make A Wish Foundation everywhere from right here in New York to Phoenix to Edinburgh, Scotland. She doesn't have any clew what she wants to do or where she wants to live. She just wants a new job yesterday.

She's very concerned with making sure her family is proud of her. More precisely, she doesn't want them to think she's a failure or a disappointment because they helped her get through music school. That's a valid concern, I suppose, but she's going totally insane. She's also very against any kind of desk or counter job; any sort of 'service' job (i.e. waiting tables, hotel/restaurant management, etc.); she wants to make a difference in the world (to make up for disappointing her parents) and she wants something active - but not too active. She apparently thinks she's going to find that on her own - or with the help of Craigslist.com. I've listened to the story a zillion times in the last four weeks and now I'm at my capacity. I hope - for everyone's sake - that she figures out what she wants to do and quickly. Actor's Equity provides career counselling - I wish she'd take advantage of it.

TOD- I would have to say that my worst boss was the one that I just recently left.  What makes her bad is that we started out working sooo well together, we clicked both at work and outside of work and for years I counted her as a friend.  That's what made things so difficult when she started flaking out at work.  I found it hard to confront her because of our friendship and because that friendship gave me knowledge of all the stressful things going on in her life.  And by the end, I just wished that she would be consistantly flaky and rude.  That would have been so much easier than having her fluctuate back and forth between awful and supportive/friendly- I never knew what I was going to get.  And everytime she did or said something nice, it made me feel awful for having bad thoughts about her- perfectly legitimate and understandable bad thoughts might I add.

Boy, that was a really long answer for the TOD... therapist, heal thyself!!

As for the Topic of the Day...I've never had a bad boss!  I've only had five bosses/supervisors and I've only worked in two places.  When I was going to Western Washington University, I worked in the music library.  And I've been working where I am now since September 24, 1984 (except for the three years when I was at WWU).  I realize that that is a rare thing to happen.  My sister has had a couple of fairly bad bosses.
