Well, you've read the notes, you thought the notes were nicce and askew, and now it is time for you to post until the askew cows come home.

WARNING SHOT, I remember liking when I watched it on TV maybe 10 years back. I don't remember enough about it to defend that position.

I do also recall reading somewhere (I think) that it was orginally shot for TV.

I'm back and have caught up with all the posts after watching the delightful TCB playing Colonel Pickering in a Tacoma production of My Fair Lady.  I will say that TCB's performance was one of the highlights of the evening.  The Eliza was very good and my friend Chris who played Karpathy was very appropriately slimey...in my humble opinion.

He didn't seem sick tonight, but otherwise I totally agree. ;) Well, really he just annoyed me.  He wasn't bad, just not right.  And he was too old.  Higgins isn't supposed to be old enough to be her grandfather. ::)

Pretty much the rest of the performers were your standard community theater level.  Some are better than others, but no one was really bad, at all.  Alfred Doolittle was pretty good, a real crowd pleaser, but not absolutely fabulous.

TOTD: I am not a party person. I think more than 4 is a crowd. I need to be harangued to turn up at a party.
For my 60th Birthday party in December I am only inviting myself (maybe DP Colin will be there!).

Did you catch up with TCB and your friend Chris, George? Autographs?
I guess they would have been pleased to see you and to hear your comments about the show (Well - their performances anyway)

The entire cast came out to the front of the theater after the show, so I did chat for a bit with both TCB and my friend Chris.  I didn't get autographs and if I'd thought about it, I would have borrowed my sister's camera...but I didn't, so I didn't. :P

The biggest private party I ever threw was for my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary.  My sisters and I worked on it for a few months.

We had cake and ice cream of course - but we also served spaghetti and meatballs, cold vegetables, and hot dogs for the kids.  Chips and dips were also available along with assorted nuts (not related to us, although several of those were also there.)

Each of my brothers and sisters and I got up and said a piece about our parents (there are eight of us).  We introduced the in-laws.  We had a presentation of grandchildren and great grandchildren  who walked in to music and each gave my mom a rose.

Then my mom and dad talked a little bit.

Then my brother presented "life in pictures" where we had blown up photos of all the houses we had ever lived in with a map and comments.

The in-law kids talked a bit.  And then we had swing dancing.

Every thing was well planned out and timed and people came and went as they pleased....but the video of the day is still fun to watch.

Oh and my sister wore the suit my mom wore on her wedding day (no fancy dress for her, it was an elopement!)

Then you never saw Rex Harrison last go around on Broadway in My Fair Lady in 1981. He was 73 he looked like he was her  great-grandfather! And Cathleen Nesbit who was the original Mrs. Higgins was back and she was 92!!

Good morning, all!  My Aunt Lois used to make a great lemon harangue pie.

Before this apartment became overloaded withthe ephemera of my existence, I used to have Thanksgiving dinners for friends who drove in from Ohio and friends from the City who had no place to go on the holiday.  The dinner would usually last from around 2 pm to 7 or 8 pm and people would come and go during the day.  Ethan Mordden played piano and a lot of my vocal scores were sung through, Ken Mandelbaum sometimes showed up after leavng his mother's in Brooklyn, there was a smattering of Drama Book Shop employees, and other friends, usually between 15-25 people during the course of the day. At that time in my apartment living, I had a loverly set of neighbors who went to visit family on the holiday and lent me their keys and kitchen while they were gone,  Anyone who's seen my apartment today would be amazed that my apartment could hold so many folk.

The last year I gave this bash was around 1985:  one of my Ohio friends brought some community theatre actor I did not know, who spent the entire weekend stone cold drunk, and when he wasn't here, he was getting polluted in The Works, a special interest boite on Columbus Avenue.  I prayed he'd get mugged and never seen again.  The kindly neighbors had moved out and with only one kitchen, the entire weekend was pretty much an ordeal.  That was the end.  Also the end of my harangue.

Speaking of the merriment of a party, I just had my first sampling of the Special K "peaches and berries"  breakfast bar.  One of the most delightful breakfast foods I've had in a long time, and only 90 calories.  Of course, I had three of them, coffee with lots of milk, and orange juice, bringing breakfast to close to 500 calories :)  , but it indeed rivaled IHOP pancakes and La Monde beignets for deliciousness.

Topic of the day:

Before we had the dogs, we would find an excuse every few years to sort of take over a restaurant or a section of a restaurant.  The biggest in terms of number of people was for our fifth anniversary, when we took over Pietrasanta Restaurant for a nice Italian dinner.  It was about seventy people, we had place cards and the whole nine yards.  And we even had a surprise treat when Janie Smulyan led a parody song she wrote for our Wooden Anniversary.  (We limited the choices of what people could order, and with the restauant owners deliberately chose a night when the place was usually light in customers, and that kept the price down.)

Sunday morning greetings!  DH Richard and I have tickets for this afternoon's Ten Tenors at the Victoria Theatre in Dayton.

TOD - Two years ago, DS Rob completed his requirements for Eagle Scout at the beginning of his senior year in high school.  We gave him his choice of a big Eagle party in the fall or a big graduation party at the end of the school year.  He said, "Everybody graduates from high school - let's have a party now!"  So, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we had his Eagle ceremony at our church and a big reception.  It was kind of like putting together a wedding.  DH Richard scripted the ceremony, which was conducted mostly by Scouts, Rob compiled a CD of his favorite music for before & after, and I planned the reception - subs, potato salad, chips, a cake, and my specialty shortbread cookies cut in the shape of the Eagle symbol.

It's kind of a tradition in our family, with those cookies, for me to make the shortbread ahead of time and then have guests share in the icing and decorating.  I'd made about 100 Eagle-shaped cookies and frozen them and the day after Thanksgiving my mom, my sister, my niece, and I decorated them with white icing and patriotic sprinkles.  They were a huge hit at the party.

There were about 75 people at the event, Rob had a great time, and, when graduation season rolled around we were all able to enjoy other kids' parties.

Well, I'm glad it wasn't my eyes playing tricks on me. I really was astonished and how ghastly the episode looked, and as it was one with a commentary, I kept expecting the speaker to comment on how awful the quality of the print was, but, naturally, he said nothing about that.

They're right; those previews that were used in the first season aren't there, and until you mentioned them, I had forgotten about them.

Have any of these folks contacted Warners and lodged complaints or gotten any explanations?

My partner and I gave a house-warming at this house after we got our initial renovations done when we moved in here. We invited about fifty people, and it was a smashing success.

I remember cooking and cleaning all day in preparation for the evenings festivities. I did several different desserts while he did some finger foods, but we did cook everything ourselves. No caterers.

I remember the thing that got the most positive comment was a pizza fondue that he made. I don't know where he got the recipe, and he never made it again for any other parties we gave, but it was THE big hit of the night.

DR MATTH no explanation on the shoddy condition of THE STOLEN COSTUME has been commented upon, except that's the only copy they could find.

I guess it was too far gone for restoration, but how is that possible.  And since it was syndicated, weren't prints sent to individual stations?  I would guess there would have been at least 25 or 30 of them around at any one time....although some might have been 16mm dupes.

Strange.

I taped all of the SUPERMAN episodes from various channels many years ago to collect them all, and I'd be willing to bet my taped copy of "The Stolen Costume" is much better looking than the one on the set.

However, even if Warners found a decent print of the episode, they're not about to call back all those boxes to replace the disc.

We haven’t had a party in years.  Over the years we threw a number of large ones for Keith’s co-workers.  The largest of those was 75 people.

The evening before the party Craig had a T-ball game and the morning of the party both boys had a karate competition, obviously leaving me very little time to cook.  I hired two teenage girls in the neighborhood to make a watermelon fruit basket & set up for the party.  Later the girls walked around serving my appetizers which included cheese & bean dip & olive cheese balls along with other goodies guests brought.  I made cheese enchiladas and the rest of the meal was supplemented by the guests.  I can’t remember the dessert.  Oh, I purchased corn bread (best corn bread ever-wish I had the recipe) & broccoli soup from the historic The Spread Eagle Inn-yes that was the name.

Two days later, after I finally finished cleaning & putting the house together, Keith suggested we go for a short walk.  Exhausted as I was off we went and found our Belle, the dog we had before Echo.

Then there were the Mar Mitzvah parties, one for each kid.

Since we lived far from family the parties were basically for the boys and their friends making the parties unique.

During my last tour of duty in Naples, Italy, I hosted several parties at my villa for my staff and their families.  Two Thanksgivings and one 4th of July, to be exact.

I think the most that were ever there at one time was 40 (staff of 22 plus wives and boyfriends, girlfriends and kids).

I had SUCH dreams last night....all rather sentimental and filled with nostalgia.

One was dreaming I was back in high school and I was studying faces...intently.  One of my classmates asked me why I looked at everyone so seriously, and I told him I was trying to memorize faces so I'd never forget them.

I realize that's cliche ... but why now?  I'm not particularly missing those days.

Another dream was of a phone call from someone with whom I haven't corresponded in a few years.  It was brief, 'cause something woke me up.

Still...

DR Michael S -- I think a revival of MFL with Rex Harrison in his 80s is totally understandable given his association with the part.

Hiring someone who looks/acts like a grandfather -- which Sexy Rexy never did, to my knowledge -- is a totally different gamble.

In defense of our Higgins (why am I defending him?), he is only 51 years old.  Our Eliza is 29.  Also, he has suffered for the last year with colon cancer, and the effects of chemo on his system.  Not that this explains his acting talents, or lack of them; but does help to explain his rather gaunt appearance.

The Lovely wife and I throw two big parties a year.  The first is our  annual Derby Bash for the Kentucky Derby.  This party seems to grow every year and the guest list gets bigger.  We usually invite 50-60 people to it.  Usually thirty-forty make it.  Because we're on the West Coast, the race usually is run a couple hours after the party starts,  We have a betting pool.  So the first couple of hours people come and survey the horses, read the tout sheet (culled from the papers and internet), and place their bets on their favourite horse.

Food comes out early and stays out all afternoon...usually BBQ chicken, biscuits, cold slaw, cheese grits, devilled eggs, a relish tray, and The Lovely Wife's legendary and coveted bourbon balls, which are very labour-intensive and which she swears she'll never make again and each year does, caving in to public demand.  Another friend makes Derby Pie and the last few years we have been supplying the fixings for Mint Juleps.

There are televisions both inside the house and outside on the deck which stay tuned to the prelimmary races and then zero in on the Derby coverage and race.  We all gather around the tube and sing My Old Kentucky Home at the appropriate time. We used to pass out lyric sheets but now the words are usually captioned on the TV.

After the race is over, the party really gets in high gear.  At the core of this festivity is a contigent of KY. friends who understand what all the hoo-ha is about with the Derby.  But all our other friends are sort of mystified and charmed by this yearly ritual and wouldn't miss the party for anything.

The party usually starts at one and winds up at around eleven o' clock when the last die-hard stragglers drift out.  Sometimes those wee hours are the most fun when the group gets small enough to savour and The Lovely Wife and I can stop playing host.  The conversation gets very wicked and funny.

The other yearly party is our annual Holiday party usually given in the first weeks of December before everyone starts departing for the holidays.

Though given inside, this one is also usually for the same sixty or so people and usually thirty-forty people show up.  And, like the Derby party, this one is an open house...so people seem to come in shifts and its always a manageable number.

This used to be an annual tree-trimming party, but ever since we got a wrought-iron designer tree, we prefer to decorate it ourselves.  Also people just kept bringing us ornaments, many of which we can't or don't want to use.  Still they do bring presents (though this is not a requirement nor sought) and the base of the tree is always piled high with gifts after the party.

The fare is usually a ham and turkey that my Mother sends us each Christmas, filled out with salad and other delicious side dishes (the well-supplied bowls of cashews always seem to be a hit).  Like the Derby, the main drink supplied is champagne, but there is also a variety of red and white non-bubbly wines, bottled water (sparkling and still), sparkling cider, egg nog, and soft drinks (the ubiquitious Diet Coke for BK, of course)

Like the Derby,  this party, starting around three or four (just when it gets dark enough for the tree lights to have an effect), goes to the wee hours with the hardcore cronies  sitting by the fire, chatting and stuffing themselves on left-overs, chocolate, and the dregs of champagne.

The really great thing over the years is to watch how all our friends have gotten to know each other and interact over the years. There's rarely anyone sitting like a lump in the corner.  Of course, it seems natural that the people one likes will usually like each other.  And there have been some truly surreal memories.  Such as Harlan Ellison jitterbugging with June Wilkinson to an old 45rpm, Miss Petunia in my kitchen (This is even more wonderful when you realize that the top of Harlan's head comes level to Ms. Wilkinson most ample assets.)

The Lovely Wife and I have also thrown fifty-year b'day parties for each other which were well-attended by the usual suspects.

For a period in the nineties, we used to have a once a month salon on a Sunday afternoon.  Anyone among our circle who wanted could show up.  We usually had a vat of chili on the stove and snacks.  There was a table full of games for those who wanted to play them, there was always a jig-saw puzzle in play.  Several friends would sing and play piano.  Folks could just sit out on the back balcony and read a book, if they wanted. Again, it was open house and people came and went like the Grand Hotel.  But we usually had a dozen or so people each month.

I did watch "The Mind Machine" on THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, and yes, indeed, from the top of a hill one can glimpse the building that was used as the facade of Tara in GONE WITH THE WIND. The episode was in beautiful condition, too, and with the pause button and frame by frame advance, one can see George Reeves' stunt man throwing punches and receiving them in the long shots and as the one in the flying scenes who takes off from a standing position (complete with wires plainly visible).

The question once again is: What is the biggest party you've ever thrown.  What was it for, how many people, what was served.

The biggest party that I've ever thrown was my 21st birthday party when I was in college.  I'm going to quote myself from July 30, 2005, when the topic was our most memorable birthday, because that was the biggest party that I've thrown (even though it was my birthday) and I'm just too lazy to rewrite it:

Quote
I was living on campus at Western Washington University and my suite-mates knew that my 21st birthday was coming up.  So we all planned this party and made invitations and a lot of people showed up (including many that I had never met before).  We put on the invitation that we were going to have a Disco Birthday party for me (I still had several Donna Summer albums...yes, this was in 1987 when vinyl still existed) and that gifts were not required but key chains (which I did and still do collect) were requested.  And since I was the only 21-year-old in the suite, I had to buy the keg of beer.  I didn't have to pay for it, just get it.

So we had the party and no one threw up and we didn't get into any kind of trouble.  I didn't (and still don't) drink, but that night I forced myself to drink a large-ish cup o' beer.  It took me all night and I never even got a little buzz, but I drank it.  For the gifts, I got a lot of key chains, some even homemade, most of which I still have in boxes my extra bedroom.

It really was quite the evening.  People were coming and going the whole time.  We made a lot of noise, but no one complained...probably because the people who might've complained were there! ;)

Good day, all. I've been lazing about all day and I have loved every second of it! This weekend has been fraught - fraught, I tell you - with Alfred Hitchcock films. Apparently I'm attempting to see them all in a very short period of time. I don't know why. Thursday night was VERTIGO at the cinema with Ben & Ant, Friday night was SHADOW OF A DOUBT and THE 39 STEPS, which I fell asleep about mid-way through, and today was the rest of THE 39 STEPS, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and SABOTEUR, or at least PART of SABOTEUR. The disc from NetFlix has a flaw and quit playing about 1h45m into the movie. Oh, me unhappy!

I'm still waiting for the Masterpiece Collection to arrive so I can revisit a few of my new favorites. Perhaps while my parents are here this coming weekend I can get them to spring for the first season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents as an early birthday gift. :)

Hi folks,

Sorry to be E & T most of the day.  I was picking things up in the yard and then went out and bought some things.  Some batteries, some water, a few can goods and lots of dog treats and dog food.

It's starting to rain and lighting.  They say there is a tornado in Polk county.  Not heading our way.

Like Michael S, I would say that if you can't reach me, it's because the power has gone out.  Even though we won't get the hurricane force winds, we will get tropical force winds.  Enough to do a lot of damage.

I heard they closed the County down so I wouldn't have gone to work tomorrow either way.  The only thing is that since I already scheduled it off as a vacation day, I won't get that day back.  I'm not to upset by that.   I'm just glad to be safe at home with Mom and the dogs.

Good vibes your way, Michael S!   :)

While I was out and about, like Michael, I also checked into some very necessary hurricane supplies.  After this last trip to NY, I can see that it is time to retire the old Casio digital camera and move to something new.

They happened to have a sale on the Casio Cameras at Circuit City so I took time to go and look them over.  I think I found my replacement.  It's on sale for a very good price on EBay with a 1 meg SD card and extra battery included.  They have 88 of them so it's no rush to get.

Yes, a friend of mine and I threw a joint party for Rodzinski and her husband.  Killbot of course thought the party was for her and basked in the company.

We served a cold cut platter, pasta salad and I made a ginormous 7-layer dip.  A good time was had by all. I would guess about 25-35 people attended.  Not bad for a NYC apartment.

I lived with three theatre friends during the summer of 2001 in a great little house while we were all involved with Fiddler, Brigadoon, and Sound of Music.  Over the course of the season, our place became the "party house."  There were at least a friend or two hanging out with us most every night, and a few larger gatherings.  Of course this meant we had to have a proper end-of-the-season bash, which involved basically the entire summer theatre company (about 40 people, I'd guess), various snacks and beverages (never thought I'd see our company's founder/producer doing shots in my kitchen), a good variety of party dance music selected by one of my roommates, and just all around great times.

The only downside to that entire summer was our one VERY cranky neighbor.  She found it necessary to call the police and complain about our party that night.  When the police officer arrived, she said that we weren't too loud at all and had absolutely nothing to worry about.  Turns out this neighbor is well known throughout the town as a real crank, and when the complaint came from her the officer took her time even arriving, fairly certain there would be no noise problem.  Basically, the neighbor complained only because there were a bunch of cars in front of our house.  Oh well, no harm done and a great party!

I met Pat Boone in Perth, Australia, of all places, by a hotel rooftop swimming pool.  He was in town for some concert or other and he, I and two other people were sunning by the pool.  It was Christmas Eve, 1986, IIRC.

I said "Hello" and he said "Hi!" back.

I cannot properly account for all of my day, for some reason.  I know I washed windows with my Scunci steamer.

And I watched "Batman Begins" and "Pinocchio" on DVD.

Loved the first, adored the second.

"Batman Begins" was interesting to me.  I don't have BK's or MattH's HUGE TV screens to watch it on, so I can only say it played very well on my modest, small-apartment-sized Sony.  Christian Bale is a terribly interesting actor...but I'd like to see him play "warmth" sometime.

I've won a few eBay auctions today.

One was unbelievable...I won a mint window card (14 X 22) (original) for "Raintree County" -- for $1.

Nobody bid but me, and starting bid was $1.

I won a linen-backed one-sheet from "Desiree", too...at a decent $50.

I almost put on PINOCCHIO today! How ironic!

DR MBarnum,. if you've seen Ann-Margret in VIVA LAS VEGAS, you've seen pretty much her routine in STATE FAIR, too.

I'm not knocking her; she's great. But the gyrations and wild swinging hair looked the same from film to film in that period of her career.

I finished THE BODY SNATCHER when I went downstairs. I liked it the best of the Lewtons I've watched in this grouping. The ending has a TWILIGHT ZONE twist to it that's neat, especially in view of the era that the film was produced.

Since NFL football ran over and postponed COLD CASE's start time (meaning I wasn't going to watch it), I put on one of the movies on the DVR that I had forgotten I had programmed:

WAY OUT WEST. No, not the Laurel and Hardy romp. This is the 1930 comedy with William Haines as a carnival barker who gets caught cheating some cowboys out of their money and is forced to work off his debt on their ranch. There he meets the sister of the ranch owner, and well, the rest is inevitable.

Other than seeing Haines in one of his three talkies made in 1930, I was surprised to see Francis X. Bushman Jr. playing the second lead in the picture. I wasn't aware the elder Bushman had a son who was also an actor. He was handsome and had a great physique (took after his dad in that way) though he wasn't much of an actor. Obviously, he didn't have star career.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I threw myself a 16th - or was it 17th? - Birthday party.  I Letraset'd (remember Letraset?) invitations - even personalized them!  -All the rubbing!  I planned and cooked the menu.  It was a veritable smorgasbord - pizza, lumpia, various salads, cake, ice cream (a sundae bar, I believe), etc.!  There was LOTS of food.  I think about 20 people showed up.  It was a truly swell event.  What was sort of cool, was that some people had to leave a few hours in to attend another event, but then they came back afterwards - around 11:30pm.  -It was summer, so we could stay up late.  I think the last guest left around 3:00am.

I also remember catering an anniversary party for one of the community theatres in the DC area.  I'm still not really sure how it ended up happening, but it did.  I made wontons, an orzo salad, assembled deli platters, brownies, and a couple of other things.  I believe about 125 people attended.

...And while in college, there were a few times when I would cater people's recital receptions.  And sometimes I would also be the accompanist for those recitals!  Talk about planning in advance!  I usually prepared enough food for 100-150 people.  In my small apartment kitchen.  *And I would usually make more from catering the recital than accompanying it!

;)

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had a very off night. Other than Bree's story, I found the rest rather uninteresting - especially Lynette and Susan's storylines. And now that they've revealed the Alfre Woodard storyline a little more, that seems kind of anticlimactic, too.

The show is still doing very, very well in the ratings (#2 for the season thus far), but a couple of the housewives are in desperate need of an interesting storyline.

I'm not a party person if I'm in a roomful of strangers. I have to have someone with me to force me to be social. :)

I don't remember ever having had a birthday party, but I do remember a Halloween party that my parents threw for me when we lived in England. I also remember the closing night party for the Sondheim Festival at the Kennedy Center (Jose, we probably ran into each other and didn't know it), and the MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG reunion cast party. I was a wallflower. Ah, well...such is life.

CROSSING JORDAN had some interesting cases tonight, and also the introduction of a new love interest for Jordan (Jill Hennesy). Obviously, they're going to keep the audience dangling with Jordan and Woody (Jerry O'Connell) by giving each of them other love interests for part of this season. I suspect by season's end, they will be drifting back into each other's arms.

Well, since I finished "the list" between shows... I might as well post it here... So...

Over the next couple of posts, I will post the itinerary for the First HHW Walking And Eating And Walking And Eating Tour - New York City Edition (HHWW&E&W&ET-NYC 1.0 for short) that took place on October 5, 2005.

Each post will cover one or two neighborhoods.  I have included the places we stopped at/in, as well as some places we did not - some were closed for Rosh Hoshanah, others were just a little off the path.

So, without further adieu...  adoo... adue... ???

Yes, a friend of mine and I threw a joint party for Rodzinski and her husband.  Killbot of course thought the party was for her and basked in the company.

We served a cold cut platter, pasta salad and I made a ginormous 7-layer dip.  A good time was had by all. I would guess about 25-35 people attended.  Not bad for a NYC apartment.

God, I hope someone will explain that one to me.
