Title: TURN BACK THE CLOCK

Well, you've read the notes, you've gained an hour reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're late because they forgot to turn back their cow clocks.

Well, I stayed at the Halloween do at Mystery & Imagination Book Store for a couple of hours.  There were several people reading.  It amazes me how some people are really poor readers of their own books.  You'd think they would at least rehearse the passages that they intend to read aloud and practice doing it with some sort of flair and panache.

I spent most of my time sleuthing the stacks, persuing the stock.

I only personally signed two DVDs, but then also signed the entire stock they had, Dvds and several vinyl records, along with Bob Burns...collector extraordinaire.

It was also requested I sign the "author wall" which all the authors who have signings or readings do.  In bright orange marker (in honour of Halloween) I signed right beside BK's first scrawl there, which was the very first signature to go on the esteemed wall.

I wrote:  "Malcolm and Christine, Thanks for having  me on Halloween sign "The Fly" Dvd.  Did you think my costume was scary?  I came as a disgruntled screenwriter.  Is there any other kind?  Be afraid, be very afraid..."

Halloween is not celebrated in Japan, either.
So I don't have to buy candies for children.

My favorite costume(?) is... E.T. covered with white sheet in E.T.

DRPogue, have you ever been to a poetry reading?  They're held quite frequently at Barnes & Noble, and most poets who flawlessly juggle words can barely spit them out over a podium.

Good morning, all!  Well, I'm nearly ready for my weeek away.  Unless I can find a nice internet cafe or the hotel has accessible computers, I shall be quite E&T until next Saturday.  Time will tell.

Today, we finish up the orchestra parts for the number I let slide by, I will try to finish a choral arrangement for my publisher, and I have to pack.

DRJose, guilt won out yesterday, and I went to the NYPL Theatre Collection to investigate David Montgomery and Fred Stone, THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, and other ephemera.  No movie after all!  Perhaps on my free days in Chicago . . .

I never discussed the TOD!  The first year I lived in New York, my friend Kaiper Wilson and I sewed together our bib overalls and walked in the Village Halloween Parade as Siamese Twins.  My life is rather dull.

Kaiper went back back to school and became a lawyer.  I wonder where she is now.  When I knew her she was writing a gossip column under the nom de plume "Rumer Hazzit."

DRCillaliz, you were a delightful Alice Liddel!

DRJason, it sounds like the visit has been rather good, so far.  My parents visit around 1990 was a horror with my mother's constant rages over family and friends.  When they left, I called my brother Tom in Ohio and asked, "why didn't he smother her 40 years ago?"

TOD: I don't know if I can name a favorite halloween.  I always love halloween, it's my second favorite holiday after Christmas.  I think my favorite costume ever was a courtesan/masquerade costume with a huge black gown (courtesy of my very talented mother) a blond wig that I arranged in an updo with feathers and a mask.  Very cool.  Actually my mom's costume that year was awesome too.  We were going to a big halloween party that a director friend had organized at a posh location downtown.  She went as a spool of thread with a pincushion hat.

This year I am going to be a fairy princess, something I have been a variation of off and on since childhood.  At my interrnship, we are having a big to do for the residential kids.  They get to leave school early and change into their costumes then go trick or treating to all of the therapists offices.  The other interns and I are decorating our office and dressing up.  There'll be a costume contest and then a pizza party.

I know that I've said it before, but, I'll say it again. . .my favorite Halloween costume was my Scarlet O'Hara dress made from draperies (green) and my Hysterium costume. . .I'm almost sure I posted a picture many moons ago of me as Scarlet. . .if anyone wants to see it again, let me know, I'm about to put it onto photobucket.  ;)

Lovely photos from DR CILLALIZ.....and her friend has given me the idea for my costume NEXT YEAR!  I love it!

Photos were taken last night, and maybe I will get one eventually.  Just my army fatigues, nothing exciting.  Lots of people riding horses, some angels, LOTS of policemen and firemen and sailors - interesting evening.

Valet of the Dolls.

Second favorite - blue faced dead crew member of the Titanic.

It was great to read about DR CP's visit to the M/I bookstore last night. Mr Bob Burns is one of my favorites of those who do extras on DVD's.  Among my favorites of his CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and FLIGHT TO MARS....

DR CP be sure to tell him that you know the man who wrote THE definitive internet biography of Miss Allison Hayes - he will be suitably impressed, I am sure.

I had read that a day or two ago about DANCING WITH THE STARS replacing ALIAS during Jennifer Garner's maternity leave. At this point, it didn't make much difference to me. I won't be watching DANCING, and there are already other shows that I watch at 8, so that will actually give me (and the por overworked DVR) a break!

As a kid, I think the best costume I ever had was a teddy bear. My mom sewed it, and it was great. I assume it was made out of felt or something else warm because I can remember going trick or treating that night and not being cold.

As an adult, I think the best costume I ever fashioned for myself was Merlin. I can't believe we never took pictures back then, so I have only a memory of it.

Last night I watched a wonderful dvd version of CASABLANCA, and now I have a question:
Is Dooley Wilson playing "Talk to Me of Love (Parlez-moi d'amour)" when Ilsa enters Rick's Cafe for the first time?  That song isn't listed on the soundtrack, but, it is a familiar melody and I just couldn't place it. . .

I'm up, I'm up.  I think it's just about nine o'clock and yet it's just about eight o'clock.

I watched last week's Alias, masochist that I am - awful, horrible, terrible, completely out to lunch, out to sea, and out of ideas.  It's pathetic that whenever they completely don't know what to do, they just turn to Arvin Sloane - he's bad, he's good, he's bad, he's good, he's bad, he's good.  WHO CARES?

One used to think there was some grand plan to this show (most TV series are never picked up without some kind of bible for the first three seasons), but after season one it's completely clear that there wasn't.  So, they just went by the skin of our teeth, and sort of got away with it in season two.  Season three was worse, and down it went.  When Miss Garner announced her pregnancy she should have been replaced immediately or the show should have been canceled.  They are, in essence, replacing her anyway (in the action scenes), and I hate to say it, but the reason people watched Alias in the first place had a lot to do with her outfits and wigs and her action scenes.  As an actress, she's a one trick pony, and as a pregnant Sydney Bristow, she has taken this show down in flames.

Can't argue about the lack of drama in ALIAS these days. As I said, knowing it's in its final season (ratings and obvious apathy from all involved will surely end it come May), I'll watch to the bitter end. Att this point, it's like watching a train wreck anyway.

Speaking of Arvin Sloane, Ron Rifkin was another very able actor who was part of the cast of WOLF that I watched last night. I had NO memory of his being part of the cast amid so many other very enterprising actors.

One of the few things that's nice about the world we live in today is that most clocks change themselves - the computer clock, the VCR clock.  So, I only had to do the oven clock and that was that.  And I'll have to do the clock in the car.  The Clock In The Car - that sounds like a Dr. Seuss book, doesn't it?

Favorite Halloween costume... hmmmm... the best of them were at the opera - I seem to remember a gigantic rooster suit, designed by M. Sendak, that qualified me for Workers' Comp in the Chiropractic Care for a Year Department... that was for Cunning Little Vixen. Oh... in going through old photos after my parents' funerals in July, I found a cute pic of me at about age 9 or 10, in a costume i had made of me as a circus bareback rider, complete with the horse! The head of the horse was a brown paper bag, the body was several coat hangers, wired together and covered with leftover material from my mom's sewing room, the legs were pieces of an old sheet. i wore my ballet togs, and a huge smile.

Hi all!

Just spent the last hour trying to get tickets to see Wicked when it comes to town.   They went on sale at noon.

Sometimes ordering a single ticket can be a blessing as I got a very good seat but could kick myself because after snatching that one up, if I had looked the next weeks tickets I could have been even closer.  Ah well.  I do have my binoculars.

This will be the first show that I 've seen on Broadway and now here at home.  I'm very interested to see what (if any) differences there will be.

Friend Possum did show up last night but inside the shed where I couldn't get to him/her so the relocation project shall have to wait until next weekend.  I don't want to catch the poor thing then make him/her wait in the cage until the weekend when I can get to the state park.

What a cute Alice!  And Scarlet!  I haven't dressed up for Halloween in years and years.  Our street almost never has any kids on it either so it's like any other day/night.  I keep a few quarters by the door in case I get a stray.  I don't want bags of candy sitting around to tempt me to eat them because no one showed up.

The few kids that have showed up   in years past seemed pretty impressed with getting real money instead of candy anyway.   :-\

Oh, and the cat question.  I don't have a cat but Bear is always so gentle when ever I don't feel good.  Even after the surgery, he wants to be with me so he climbs (ever so slowly and gently) into bed with me and lays his head (which weights a ton but he doesn't know that) on me to let me know he is with me.  He never moves or cries, just stays with me.  Oh, how I am going to miss him when his time comes.

By the by, JRand and others who've inquired, I finally sat down yesterday and watched NORTH BY NORTHWEST on TCM.  I quite enjoyed it, but I would not list it as either my favourite Cary Grant or my favourite Hitchcock.

I don't recall any particularly favourite Halloween costume.  In high school, after I really got too old to trick or treat, a group of pals and I would pass out candy at one of our houses.  We'd all dress up as various monsters...one was Dracula, one Frankenstein, I was always a disfigured Hunchback...either Igor or Notre Dame, take your pick.  One of the guys dads worked at 3M, so he always came taped up as the Mummy.

We have a Halloween walk in our neighbourhood for the kids.  So the outside gate and courtyard of the house gets an appropriately creepy make-over.  I carve what is usually acknowledged as the best pumpkin on the block, we play Vaughn Williams' spooky Sinfonia Antarctica and sit outside at the fire-pit, swilling wine with the neighoubrs and passing out candy.

The local Albertson's grocery store sells coupon books for donuts.  You give the kids the coupon and they can get a real donut (at a later date).  The parents love it because they can trust that it's a legitimate treat that won't poison their kids and the kids love it because...it's a donut!

Pleasant temps, brilliant blue sky, autumnal colors on the trees (finally).  I took a few side trips up roads I haven't explored in my neighborhood.

There are some so-so houses, mixed in among the nicer ones, on the streets "above" mine, but they have s-p-e-c-t-a-c-u-l-a-r views!

It's good to be alive, isn't it!  To take in all the wonders arounnd us and to appreciate them while seeing them!

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from New York City!

It was a perfect day for a train ride!  Not too cold, not too hot.  Clear skies.  And gobs and gobs of gorgeous fall foliage to look at outside the window.  -And, I have to say, I'm digging the Acela train.  Nice seats.  Good lighting.  And a "gourmet" cafe car.  -And double Amtrak Guest Reward points too!  -I think I just earned another free trip with this excursion.

...And on the Metro ride to Union Station this morning, it was great seeing all the friends and family members who were heading down to the Marine Corps Marathon to root on their friends and family.  Lots of creative signage.  And a couple of people were receiving updates from their runners on their cell-phones and Blackberries.

I'm back from the run-through of The Drowsy Chaperone - or two-thirds of a run-through.  About sixty-five minutes into the ninety minute intermissionless musical, Sutton Foster accidentally fell and hurt her wrist.  It didn't look bad from where I sat, but they stopped the run-through and gave her an ice pack and took her to the hospital just to be safe and have it x-rayed.  I'm sure she'll be fine, and they're not back until Tuesday or Wednesday, so that will give her time to rest.

The amazing thing about that is the just ten minutes earlier she'd done her big solo number, I Don't Want To Show Off, in which she does cartwheels, flips, backflips and the splits.

I won't comment on the show, but will say the performers are all excellent.  I've never seen Sutton before but she's very good in this show.  I had no idea my pal Danny Burstein was in the show, as well as Lenny Wolpe, so I had a nice chat with both of them.  I sat next to Judd Hirsch.

I'll be at the orchestra read-through on Thursday morning, too.  That should be fun.

Topic of the Day - My best Halloween and Halloween Costume happened while I was on tour with Anything Goes.  I believe were were in Grand Rapids, SD.  (ND?)  Everyone on the tour was into it.  We even had a "Secret Satan" program going on during the weeks preceding the Big Party.

For the party, the company manager booked a large suite at the hotel we were staying at that night.  *And even paid the "cleaning fee" in advance.  Everyone dressed up.  Lots of creativity went into everyone's outfits.  And some people even spent a nice chunk of change too.  *We had made a stop at the Mall of America a few weeks before, and that turned into Halloween Costume Central for many people.

Myself, I put together my costume the day of the event.  I went to Target and raided the maternity clothes Clearance racks, and then I went to Wal-Mart and picked some fuzzy slippers and my make-up - eye shadow, lipstick, nail polish, etc.  -Of course, nothing coordinated.  I ended up going as "Imeda in Exile".  -I believe I posted a pic last year, so...

;)

But it really was a great Halloween all around that year.  One of the more surreal moments of the evening was hanging out in the hotel bar, singing karaoke, while real cowboys (who were wearing their hats not as a costume) were walking in for happy hour drinks.  Needless to say, we all gave the locals something to talk about.

:)

I started my afternoon with CAROUSEL. I hadn't seen it in a long while. I haven't even listened to the music in a long time, so it was in many ways experiencing this anew. I was moved to tears on a couple of occasions, and I generally love it.

I could kill Fox, of course, for doing this DVD on the cheap with a flat letterbox transfer. I think not only does it need a good anamorphic transfer, but the color could do with some tweaking, too. But mainly, we need an enhanced transfer. The poor DVD player with its progressive scan switched on and the TV with its 3:2 pulldown elements were striving mightily to deal with all those plaids in pants and aprons and coats, but there was flashing or aliasing all over the place. And with an enhanced transfer would also come much more sharpness to the image.

CAROUSEL isn't highly regarded enough for them to remaster this disc like they've done with the upcoming new release of OKLAHOMA! but it's a shame since this is probably the only movie version of this masterpiece we'll ever get.

Then I watched the pilot episode of LOIS & CLARK, and it was most enjoyable. I had never seen it before, and those of you who tipped me off ahead of time about the scene with Clark and his mother over his costume were right: it was hilarious. Loved all those outfits (many of the other DC heroes) that he experimented with until he landed on just the right one.

Love Jimmy Olsen, too. What a cutie he is! Lane Smith is great as Perry White as well (though John Hamilton can never, ever be surpassed).

T.O.D.

I am not really a fan of Halloween.  I guess I don't really have anything against ghosts, goblins, and witches; but I have never cared for trick or treating or for costume parties.  Everyone assumes that since I am an actor, I must love dressing up in costumes for parties, but just the opposite is true.  I don't consider acting on stage and playing dress-up to have anything in common.  Don't ask me why, maybe I was scared by a drag queen at an early age.

Everyone at the top of his game - and doing it all for us, the audience.  And I don't think Eva Marie Saint was ever again as beautiful onscreen....previously she was a knockout in RAINTREE COUNTY, but no match for Elizabeth Taylor....but here she was coiffed and coutoured within an inch of her life, and it was very becoming.

TOD: I liked halloween when it was a simple kids' holiday. We had the last 20 minutes of the schoolday for a party. Then we dressed up and trick-or-treated in the neighborhood for an hour or so. That was it. Now the whole thing is so overblown it is ridiculous.

WOW!  I'm VERY impressed with it.  I haven't taken in all the features yet, nor have I watched the film alone sans commentary or with music effects track (nor both the mono and 5.1 tracks), but it looks unbelievably rich and sharp and detailed.  And the sound is wonderful...even watched a bit with the 5.1 track and it adds quite a bit of depth to the film, IMO.

Watching a lot of the features, I was painfully reminded of the tremendous void in the DVD market of Judy-Mickey films.  We have one:  "Love Finds Andy Hardy."  But they made several Hardy films together in which Judy's "Betsy Booth" was an integral character, plus "Babes in Arms," "Babes on Broadway," "Girl Crazy", and "Strike Up the Band".  Judy also had a number with Mickey in "Words and Music."

I want an Andy Hardy boxed set, a Mickey-Judy boxed set, a Philo Vance boxed set and a Maisie boxed set.

Finally back, and finally done dealing with Adelphia - it looks like we have at long last figured out all these recent problems - and they're replacing the modem tomorrow morning.  I'll explain more in the notes.

And then, I logged onto haineshisway.com and I couldn't get into the discussion board - it had closed up the haineshisway section.  I clicked on the + sign but nothing happened, but then I clicked on haineshisway and it came back the way it was supposed to be.  The real question is, why was it closed up like that for the first time EVER?

I'll have plenty to say about City of Angels later.  But, for now might I just say where in tarnation IS everyone?  This is most unseemly and NOT the way we like to send out a month.

I won two other ashtrays from restaurants I used to go to as a kid, both from the same seller who had the ashtray from my father's restaurant.  And both of these ashtrays are from places mentioned in the Kritzer books -  Kelbo's and The Bagel.  It frosts me that I didn't know about these ashtray things or this particular seller, as two weeks ago he had an ashtray from Casa Cienega, which features in the first Kritzer book.  I've never seen anything from Casa Cienega - heaven knows what else this guy has had in the past.

Then, for some reason I pulled CLOSER off the shelf and started watching it again. I admired the performances in it very much. Possibly because I'll be seeing Natalie Portman in STAR WARS III this week is what made me want to see her doing some GOOD acting. Enjoying CLOSER just as much the second time through though I only got about 30 minutes in.

ROME had some intriguing machinations going on tonight including incest, lesbianism, and ritual suicide. Just good old fashioned fun for the whole family!  :D

CROSSING JORDAN had some interesting guest stars including Dee Wallace Stone (whom I haven't seen in ages; I knew her husband had died some years ago, but for some reason I thought she had died, too). Also guest starring was Broadway's David Burtka.

BK:  I think you might find menus for sale, too.  Some folks have napkins with the names of restaurants printed/embossed on them.  Others have artifacts from the restaurants, too.

The sky is definitely the limit when it comes to what you might find on eBay.

I wish I had the room in my life to diversify and branch out with other "collectibles," but I'm doing too much now, drat it all to hell.

I need storage shelves and storage drawers and storage cabinets.

And square footage into which I can place them.

I'm thinking "pizza" for supper.  I had a late lunch, so I'll be ready for din-din in about half an hour or so, I think.

And "pizza" -- "pepperoni pizza", I think, will do the trick.

THE WIZARD OF OZ set is glorious, but I'm hanging on to my ULTIMATE OZ laserdisc package just the same.

I'm in from today's sightseeing. I love my family - I really do - but I won't lie when I say I think I'm ready for this vacation to end. In fact, I might take Tuesday off to recuperate.

We went to church this morning on the upper west side. Then we toddled down to Matt's Grill for some lunch and they toddled off to 5th Avenue. For my own sanity, I decided to stay behind at their hotel room for a rest. We had dinner at Rosie O'Grady's at 5pm and saw MAMMA MIA! at 7pm. They didn't enjoy the show nearly as much as I had thought they would. I think they're all tired.

After the show, I hoped to Heaven that we'd be going home for the evening, but they wanted to go back to Roxy's Deli for cheesecake, so go we did. We're not meeting tomorrow until 11:30-ish, so we all get to sleep in a little.

I think we're going to the Museum of Natural History and Science tomorrow after we have lunch at the Waldorf. Then we have reservations at Becco at 7:30, after which we're ending their vacation with a trip to the top of the Empire State Building.

And now...I'm ready to go to bed. Buona sera.

Well, I'm operating on yesterday's time, rather than today's.  It feels like 10 of 10 p.m.   I know it isn't.

It just feels that way.

I'm gonna prep my pizza, eat, watch a bit more TV, and wait for the sandman.

G'night.

Ron, thankfully I've managed to find menu's to most of my childhood haunts, very early on, when I was writing the first Kritzer book.

These DVDs of THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW/LETTER TO LORETTA are great! It has really made me realize what a wonderful actress she was...I guess I just never knew. And a lot of B-actors/actresses are showing up in the guest casts.

Today was a busy day...well, I was gone most of the day.  After I listened to the last part of last week's radio show before it switched over, I went to my friend Margo's house to help her disassemble a bunk bed set in her youngest daughter's bedroom.  It all came apart with allen (alan, allan?) wrenches, exept that it needed metric and Margo only had standard sizes.  Fortunately, I looked in my little took box and it had a set of both kinds!  The bed set (white, tubular) came apart very easily.

The worst part was that Margo just had her in-floor heating fixed and it was very warm in her house and she didn't open a window, so I was sweating.  After the window was opened, and the bed taken apart, we disassembled Margo's California queen bed and put that into her yougest daughter's bedroom.  But this bed was just a headboard, footboard and undersupport piece that all just unhooked very easily.  We moved it into the room after the tube-bunk-bed was removed and all was well.  And sweaty and tired. ;)

After all of that, I picked up my niece from her house and we went to my parents' house for dinner.  Home-made lasagna, garlic bread and some kind of bar dessert that I can't even describe.  It was really good, though.  But I don't know what it was.  We played a couple of rounds of Phase 10 (a family card game that's a lot of fun), then my niece and I came home to our respective homes and I've been watching TV ever since.  I got home about 8:30 and watched the second half of "Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition" but skipped "Desperate Housewives."  It was a repeat that I've seen before.  I watched "Grey's Anatomy."  A very touching episode tonight.

I just realized that I have NO clean laundry...well, no shirts and no clean underwear (I wore my last clean pair today).  It feels like it's 12:35 a.m. and I have to do laundry.  Pity me. :-\
