Well, you've read the notes, you were on the same page as the notes, the notes were on the same page as you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're still trying to figure out what page they're on.

Slow morning so far! I'm Number 5.

Jason, glad to hear we will be sitting next to each other. Ron, the seating in many Broadway houses puts even numbers next to each other and then an aisle and odd numbers so Jason and I won't have to hector our intervening seat mate.

Sweeney opens tonight. I'm looking forward to the reviews. I don't have a clue as to how the critics will treat the show.

On to work for me.

Later, gaters.

As proof that Halloween isn't entirely over, consider the following from ABC News: (http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=1231684&page=1%27)

Quote
Oct. 20, 2005 —  Thirteen-year-old twins Lamb and Lynx Gaede have one album out, another on the way, a music video, and lots of fans.

They may remind you of another famous pair of singers, the Olsen Twins, and the girls say they like that. But unlike the Olsens, who built a media empire on their fun-loving, squeaky-clean image, Lamb and Lynx are cultivating a much darker personna. They are white nationalists and use their talents to preach a message of hate.

Known as "Prussian Blue" — a nod to their German heritage and bright blue eyes — the girls from Bakersfield, Calif., have been performing songs about white nationalism before all-white crowds since they were nine.

"We're proud of being white, we want to keep being white," said Lynx. "We want our people to stay white … we don't want to just be, you know, a big muddle. We just want to preserve our race."

Lynx and Lamb have been nurtured on racist beliefs since birth by their mother April. "They need to have the background to understand why certain things are happening," said April, a stay-at-home mom who no longer lives with the twins' father. "I'm going to give them, give them my opinion just like any, any parent would."

April home-schools the girls, teaching them her own unique perspective on everything from current to historical events. In addition, April's father surrounds the family with symbols of his beliefs — specifically the Nazi swastika. It appears on his belt buckle, on the side of his pick-up truck and he's even registered it as his cattle brand with the Bureau of Livestock Identification.

"Because it's provocative," explains April of the cattle brand, "to him he thinks it's important as a symbol of freedom of speech that he can use it as his cattle brand."

Songs like "Sacrifice" — a tribute to Nazi Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy Fuhrer — clearly show the effect of the girls' upbringing. The lyrics praise Hess as a "man of peace who wouldn't give up."

"It really breaks my heart to see those two girls spewing out that kind of garbage," said Ted Shaw, civil rights advocate and president of the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund — though Shaw points out that the girls aren't espousing their own opinions but ones they're being taught.

In a word...EEEWWWWW!!!   :P

Quote
DR td - I keep running into Doug Sills in the elevator - and he was actually at Sweeney tonight too.  Should I pass on your greetings to him?

To be honest, I've run into Mr. Sills only twice, each time presenting a photo op, though not lots of conversation; HOWEVER, Donna Lynn would more than likely have given the same reaction as Jim Stanek had you mentioned my name to her. . .
If you run into John Miller again, you can talk to him about the meaning of SHOWMO.  ;)
And, you could always ask Jim Stanek if he'd like me to send him the pictures taken with me (and a couple of friends) on the FORUM set.

I agree completely with BK's assessment of TWO FOR THE ROAD (as I said yesterday when posting my thoughts). All of the color seems just too placid, and when you're photographing those gorgeous European locations, you want to see it portrayed vividly. The movie sparkles in every other way.

But I hated to carp too much since the DVD is SUCH an improvement on the laserdisc.

Tonight starts November ratings sweeps on all the major networks, so you'll be seeing few if any reruns of first-run primetime series for the next few weeks.

ABC has jettisoned its entire prime time line-up to run PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, however, so don't go looking for ALIAS or NIGHT STALKER tonight.

Another excellent review for my friends at the Storm Theatre and their new production of the play SALVAGE SHOP

http://curtainup.com/salvageshop.html

With SALVAGE SHOP opening last night (and the Times review actually being printed yesterday, before they opened), and yesterday being the shipping day of the first cast album a show of theirs has had (LAST STARFIGHTER), Nov. 2, 2005 may be a real banner day for this up-and-coming theater.

Hard to pick one memorable person.  Among people I met once and never really met again, I'd have to rank Andy Rooney (I had booked him as a speaker for the law school speaker's  program and he couldn't have been nicer) and Stephen Sondheim (he was critiquing my work on an ASCAP panel), who were both amazing presences.

DR MattH: re: "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith":

I need to say straight off that "The Empire Strikes Back" is my favorite "Star Wars" movie bar none, with the original (now known as "A New Hope") a very close second.  I cannot stand "Return of the Jedi" and have not much use for the first two prequels.

"Star Wars: ROTS" is a wholly different film from the other two prequels and shares second place with "A New Hope" in my assessment.

I think it important to say that in the first two films (1977 and 1980), I continue to enjoy the films primarily because the characters and stories were nicely developed. I cared about Luke and Leia and Han very much.  The plot twists and turns in "The Empire Strikes Back" were stunning and exciting.

Since George embarked upon the prequels, I've found no character worthy of my interest.  That remains true, even having seen "Revenge of the Sith."  I want to like them!  Good golly, gee, but I do!  But I just can't relate to their oh-so-important concerns.

Ewan McGregor is no Alec Guinness.  These films should have had plenty of Obi-Wan development, but there is none.  He just walks through the role.  His accent is pretty.  But there's no aura around him like that projected by Guinness whom you BELIEVED was a Jedi and a powerful one.  And he gets no chastisement for having forced the council to accept Annakin when the council was very much against bringing him in as a boy.

Natalie Portman has been pretty much wasted in these films, too.  She's pretty, but is given precious little character to develop.  I cared about Carrie Fisher.  She had a sardonic way of delivering a putdown, and then she could be all soft and sexy.  I felt her pain when Han was encased in carbonite. I barely felt a thing when Padme Amidala passed away.  Oh, well.

The less said about Hayden Christensens' apparent lack of acting talent the better.  He glowered nicely and the special makeup was fun, especially the yellow eyes...and the final transformation into Darth Vader.  He's a great mannequin, but the fewer lines he's given, the better he seems.  (You may be surprised to learn it, but the ONE character I truly took to was the boy Jake Lloyd who portrayed Annakin in "The Phantom Menace" -- compared to Christensen, he's Haley Joel Osment!).

I also admired Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn in "The Phantom Menace," but Lucas dispatched him without provocation and left us with McGregor.

Despite all this kvetching about not giving a whit about the characters, the movie works VERY WELL.  It's stunning to look at, it has a riveting story, and the action is breathtaking.  I was very much into what was going on.

The movie belongs to Ian McDiarmid. He's BRILLIANT as Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious!  He should be remembered at Oscar time...not with just a nomination, either.

One curiousity: Yoda's last comments to Obi-Wan before they both went into exile.  Something about the spirit of Qui-Gon having returned from the netherworld...and Yoda offering to teach Obi-Wan how to communicate.  There's no point of reference anywhere else in the saga about this, so it seemed strange.  I guess it was a means for setting up Obi-Wan's exile as one of growth and introspection.

As for the DVD, it's stunning.  The sound is spectacular, to my ears.

The only thing that puzzles me, and won't be noticeable to anyone watching it anamorphically, is that names keep appearing on the upper black bar throughout the movie....Coleman, Lucas, Guyett, McCallum....all the names of men involved in the film. The names just flash up there for a few seconds and then disappear...and this goes on and on.

It's most disconcerting and a puzzlement.

Oh, yes.  John Williams' score is flat-out gorgeous.

So...that's what I thought.

I'll be watching it again.

Jane, about the basmati.

I don't quite get the picture on how you prepare the rice after toasting it.

First, you put olive oil in a pan, heat it, add the rice (how much?) and toast it until each kernel can easily be cut in two.

Then you add water and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes?

How much water per quantity of rice? (is it like one cup of rice to two cups of water?)

And do you simmer it covered or uncovered?

Then you add water and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes?

How much water per quantity of rice? (is it like one cup of rice to two cups of water?)

And do you simmer it covered or uncovered?

Since I make enough for several days I use two cups of basmati.  The amount of olive oil depends on my pouring skills at that moment-basically enough to coat the basmati when I add it to the heated olive oil and stir.  I continue stirring until the basmati is toasted.

I don't cut the basmati, I break it in half with my fingers or forget that and just wait until the basmati looks toasted.

I then add double the amount of water to basmati along with the salt.

Be careful not to let the pot boil over while it is simmering.  I cook it covered.  Since it tends to boil over I have a habit of opening the lid and checking on it.  I don't really keep the lid shut until it's simmering properly.

Did that help or did I confuse you more?  ;D

Speaking of basmati, Joy, thank you for the suggestion.  I thought about purchasing a rice steamer while our kitchen is being remodeled.  We really don’t have the room for it and since I prefer my daily basmati toasted I doubt I would use the steamer much later on.  I am also loosing cabinet space & will have to get rid of kitchen a gadget so now isn’t the time to be purchasing new ones.  If I find I have room I might just get one and try your recipe for variety.

I've met so many memorable people, it would be impossible to single out just one.

Re: Doug Sills.  I've had two encounters with him myself.  He did a staged reading of my Sherlock Holmes play, THE EBONY APE at the Stratford Theatre in Connecticut several years back and did a fantastic job as Holmes.  Unfortunately I was on a plane to London the night of the reading, so I did not get to attend it and heard a recording of it later.

But before a week before the reading, Doug called to ask me several things about the script and his character and we had a nice conversation.  We later met backstage at South Coast Rep after a performance of Much Ado About Nothing in which he played Benedick and was quite wonderful.

Hey y'all,

TOD:  I'll have to think about that one!

I just had the yummiest homemade lunch:  I made a little pizza out of a whole-wheat pita, spread with fat-free ricotta, chopped tomatoes, fresh basil, spinach, reduced-fat feta, and a little bit of fresh mozzarellla.  With a side of fresh carrot-ginger slaw, made with apple cider vinegar, ground mustard, and a dab of mayo.  Yummy yum yum.

Today I'm off to a meeting with the director of my first official solo casting job!  It's a student film, should be pretty easy, although we have to find a 4-year-old girl.  That could present somewhat of a challenge.

But before that, I'm off to assist at an audition for  Tommy.  I'll check in later!

Home sick today so between naps I will sit on the couch like so much fish and watch motion picture entertainments on DVD.

Just finished watching this Bollywood movie, which I quite enjoyed. NANAK DUHJIYA SUB SANSAR (1970). It is about a family who is separated during the religious riots in 1948. Little by little the family is reunited over the next 20 years or so, despite the fact that they are now of different religious creeds. The film is a plea for those of different religions to please get along!

TOD:  I had a nice chat once with Frederick Forsyth.  He visited the aircraft carrier I was on in the Persian Gulf.  He was in the area doing research which, I believe, resulted in "The Fist of God."

Loretta Lynn -- she was doing a tour and also visited my carrier in the Persian Gulf...she and her hubby, Moony, who said very little.  She was outgoing, friendly, and genuinely concerned about the sailors.  I escorted her around the ship and we stopped in various work centers so she could chat.

Margaret Thatcher -- she visited San Diego promoting her book...she visited USS Kitty Hawk, my last command.  I found her charming and gracious, as only a British Dame can be, but had only minimal (but memorable) contact with her.

To make it clear why I was around these folks:  I was assistant Public Affairs Officer and chief-in-charge of shipboard TV and radio.

Greetings from Chicago!  I'm back from a rehearsal with the Plaids and the cast with piano, bass, drums, and guitar.  Christine Ebersole is a delight, and DRGinny, without makeup, Christine's a dead ringer for Geri Hart!

DRJoy, I can recommend a lady for you about the Lena Horne role:  Montego Glover, who's in this concert:  she's beautiful,   friendly and funny, an excellent singer and dancer.  She and the Plaids are doing "Gotta Have Me Go With You" and we're using the orchestration from the "soundtrack" recording.  The Plaids are also doing "Two Ladies in the Shade of the Banana Tree" and "You're A Builder Upper."  This concert is looking quite good.

We've had one casualty:  our librarian Sue Birch fell last night and broke her ankle, so I think I'll be helping her out tomorrow night backstage.   Tonight I'm having dinner with the Gershwin family, the Kimballs, Betty Auman, and God knows who else.

DRJose, I decided I didn't like the DARLING OF THE DAY experience to want to either see the production and what was done to my work or deal with the Light Opera Works people.  Since the word's gotten back to me that one problem was my not delivering the completed orchestration last April - and this coming from the person who has been unable since Oct 2004 to provide a contract with the July Styne office - I suspect my work on this show is completed.  I don't have time to revisit such angst when I'm having a great time with Arlen, Gershwin, Harburg and others.

Home sick today so between naps I will sit on the couch like so much fish and watch motion picture entertainments on DVD.

Poor, poor Mikey!  Get well.

My former intern Dylan is quite ill at SUNY Purchase and the health clinic seems unable to diagnose the illness.  Symptoms include coughing up blood, swollen lymph nodes, fever.  I suspect mononucleosis, but the tests have so far confirmed nada.  If he's still sick next week, I'm going to college to kick some ass.

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  You all are supposed to keep the home fries burning and the home fries are certainly NOT burning.

I'm back for only a brief while, then must ship out the balance of the CD packages, then must hie myself to LACC.

Had fun at the sitzprobe (my first, actually), and our meeting was short and sweet.

DR MattH, I have seen WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON and I really liked it. But it's a very girly romantic comedy (so I hesitate to recommend it to you). I don't remember any scenes with Sean Hayes and Nathan Lane.  Did they only have the one scene?

The DVR did record it, but I haven't seen it yet, and I suspect it'll be this weekend before I get to it. However, since TV is pretty bankrupt for me on Friday night, I could watch it then.

I'll let you know once I've seen it. Girly-romantic I can handle if the right people are involved.

Lunch was very delicious, and I got back home early enough to be able to get to the movie theater showing CAPOTE in plenty of time.

It's a truly wonderful film. Hoffman (Philip Seymour, not Dustin) is brilliant beyond belief, and Clifton Collins, Jr. playing Perry Smith is almost his equal. The give and take these two actors experience during this film is something for the books.

Catherine Keener as Harper Lee is also grounded and very good, and numerous other superb actors pop in for brief appearances, Bob Balaban and Chris Cooper among them.

I loved it.

So, that's two for two for the year-end movies I've been looking forward to as far as satisfying me beyond expectations. First GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK and now CAPOTE.

I guess HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE will be the next one on my must-see list.

Then, in no particular order: RENT, THE PRODUCERS, and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

Natalie Portman can be an expressive actress, but I thought she was dreadful in STAR WARS II and only marginally better in STAR WARS III. Hayden Christiansen was horrible in II and really no better in III.

A friend believed that both actors are talented but they were saddled with Lucas' trite and laughable dialogue, and though I agree the dialogue is pretty feeble, couldn't talented actors have been less stiff and monotonous even if the writing was insufferable and the direction more interested in effects and mechanics than flesh and blood people? I think so.

T.O.T.D.

I am tempted to say Michael Barnum, but I still doubt that it would get me a date with him, especially since I have no fire escape at my apartment (but I do have a balcony).  So......

I have told this story before, but without a doubt, my meeting and dining with Colleen Dewhurst tops my list of those most influential people that I have actaully met.  Colleen (she wouldn't allow me to call her Ms. Dewhurst) was a woman I considered to be one of the great actresses of the 20th century.  To actually meet her, and to spend so much time with her, talking about theater, Broadway, Eugene O'Neil, and many of her great leading men over the years was a memory that seems to good to have been true.  And I didn't have tto have anyone pinch me to prove it was real, her kiss goodbye was enough to prove that it had happened.

I am at work and just got back from a long lunch (I had to walk my niece's dog...she's not home).  Anyway, here at work, we're having a baby shower for a co-worker who (appropriately) had a baby a couple of months ago.  I'm involved in the party committee and have to help set up at 2:30.  The party goes "live" at 3:00.  I will also have to help clean up afterwards.  We're compiling songs with the word "baby" in them and I brought the OBC of Baby and the BK produced "Unsung Musicals" (disc #1) for the song "New Words."  I also brought my three stuffed Muppet Babies for decorations.  Others on the committee are bringing stuff animals and puppets for decoration.  It should all be great fun and not take too long...except for the setting and cleaning up.

And that's my contribution to getting us to 100+ posts today. ;D

I guess the most famous person I've ever met was Frank Capra, though he was so old when I interviewed him and so soft-spoken that I can't say that I was bowled over by him.

More impressive to me was Tony Randall whom I met when he did a regional performance as Harold Hill in THE MUSIC MAN, and he was superb, too. But Tony did not suffer fools gladly, and he kept me on my toes during the interview. He seemed to be impressed that I knew as much about his career as I did. He said most people knew him from THE ODD COUPLE and the Doris Day films, and that was it.

I think the ability to portray earnestness would have benefited Hayden Christensen ENORMOUSLY, despite the lines.

The missed opportunity was to give Portman some wisecracks...or at least sarcasm, from time to time.  Leia must have gotten that talent from one of her parents, but it sure isn't on display with either Portman's or Christensen's characters.

The baby shower was a success!  One of our committee dressed up as Winnie the Pooh and played songs with "baby" in the title.  He went by the name of DJ Pooh.  He was hysterical.  One of the last songs that he played (at my request) was "New Words," sung by the fabulous Liz Callaway, from the CD "Unsung Musicals," produced by our very own BK and orchestrated by our very own Elmore!!  Everyone who listened to it loved it!  People asked me what's that song?  What did it come from?  Who sang it?  I told everyone! ;D

TOD,
I've met some amazing people in my life, but I have to say the most memorable was Sister Helen Prejean (the real nun Dead Man Walking was written by and about). Mostly because she has done so many incredible things - like singlehandedly getting the Pope to come out against the death penalty.  She is very small in stature yet she has an incredible presence about her, she's tough but sort of spritely at the same time.

Last night, Harlan & Susan Ellison took pity on me, because I am a batchelor this week (The Lovely Wife's away), and took me to a very nice, but somewhat pricey, restaurant on Ventura in the Valley.  We had a lovely time.  Toward the end of the meal a foursome came in...one of the couples was Larry David and his wife.  No, we said nothing to them and let them eat their meal in peace.

Unfortunately, I was unable to accept BK's invite for dinner this afternoon.

Did anyone portray John Garfield????

It only covers the four years of Capote's researching and writing of IN COLD BLOOD. Garfield was long since dead by that time.

Cillaliz, nice picture.  Was your hair strawberry blond there or is it just the way the photo is tinted?  Either way I like it.

LOL I hate that photo of me.  It may have been a bit redder, I used to dye it that way, but I think it was the lighting, that was last February in New Orleans

I see that FOX is releasing a 2 disc DVD of CLEOPATRA in February. I remember when that movie would show on network television back in the 70s...I seem to recall enjoying it.

Also releasing from FOX is MAKING LOVE. Haven't seen that movie in many, many years...although I do have the VHS of it.....and volume 1 of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA! I hope that means that LAND OF THE GIANTS might follow eventually.

What is the CLEOPATRA that I have - 3 discs or only 2? Haven't watched it since I first got it several years ago.

Good news about MAKING LOVE. I burned my own DVD of it from a Fox Movie Channel showing a month ago, but a commercial release will be nicer.

Volume 1 of TIME TUNNEL is coming, but I haven't read anything about LAND OF THE GIANTS.

I've been having issues again with my laptop, so instead of risking losing everything again, I bought an external hard drive last night and backed up my entire laptop hard drive. (I used to just back up the files I didn't want to lose)  So, now I can rest a little easier.

I just read Ben Brantley's review of SWEENEY TODD - a love-letter if I ever read one. The guys at Talkin' Broadway equated it to the dessimation of American musicals by the Brits. I haven't found the reviews for any of the other papers yet.

My review? I loved it.

I spent a long evening watching television rather than DVDs.

First up was last night's CSI: MIAMI. Once again, the forensic cat and mouse games are as intricately written as on the other two CSI shows, but there isn't an actor here who's generating a tenth of the charisma of George Eads or Marg Helgenburger or Khandi Alexander or Jonathan Togo on the other shows. They're fine actors but there's just no spark, no character intensity that rivets me to the screen.

Maybe that's why the other two are Top 5 shows, and this one barely makes the Top 20.

My review? I loved it.

Not being a hard core Sweeney fan , seeing it on the first night of previews and then having everyone from HHW who was in NYC at the time ask me what I thought about it was a little intimidating. (I am just a country girl from Iowa)
As I said then, I loved it. It's really nice to see so many of you loved it too.

For one of the few times ever, there were many more laughs for me on JOEY than there were on WILL & GRACE. Neither is a laugh riot, but any time you try to teach Joey a game with even a slight set of rules (Texas Hold 'em tonight), he's hilarious.

Remember how hysterical he was playing the $100,000 PYRAMID during the last year of FRIENDS? He'd blurt out the first things that came into his mind regardless of the clues, and his kicker was always "a ghost?"

CSI had an interesting show that pitted head forensic scientist Gil Grissom (William Petersen) against another forensic expert who had cleverly doctored evidence for a fee. It was up to Grissom to find out how it was done and he was working against a court deadline.

The other case had to do with an immaculate conception. Needless to say, the path was twisty and confounding before we got to the surprising conclusion.

WITHOUT A TRACE took the agents to MExico tracking down a missing husband abducted there by thugs who were demanding a ransom.

OK story, but the solution to the mystery one could see coming. Not one of the show's better cases.

Francois, I will step in in Ben's absence and answer the question about Souvenir, the show where Judy Kaye plays Florence Foster Jenkins, who was unable to sing but did anyway, to thousands of appreciative audience members -- and at Carnegie Hall!  I loved the show and have never laughed so hard in a theatre.  I almost had a breakdown because I couldn't stop howling and the tears were squirting from my eyes.  And then it suddenly turned on me and found myself sobbing from an incredibly poignant scene which I cannot reveal, because anyone who can must go and see this gem for themselves.

MBarnum, you must have watched Hi Diddle Diddle from your box of 50 musicals. I was just going through the list of movies on mine and looking them up on IMDB. There are a few on there that are "awaiting 5 viewers". But Hi Diddle Diddle sounded like one of the more interesting titles. ROAD SHOW, also with Adolphe Menjou sounds good too.

Bought an LP tonight. Original Cast album from THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE. Had Bert Wheeler of Wheeler and Woolsey fame, so I had to give it a go. Also John Raitt, Charlotte Rae (pre Abner), Royal Dano...

The plot is bad and the songs ain't great. But maybe it'll grow on me.

I'm quite fond of "Three Wishes For Jamie" Did you know the novel upon which it was based was written by Tantrum O'Neal's Paternal Grandaddy?

It was probably too similar to the charm of "Finian's Rainbow" and "Brigadoon" to succeed as a musical.

I'm back from an incredibly long day.  Must now write the notes so I can relax a bit.

I do hope no one is surprised that Ben Brantley loved Sweeney - he worships at the altar of Stephen Sondheim and if someone came onstage and recited Sondheim lyrics whilst gargling Listerine and doing a soft show, he'd love it.

I saw Sutton Foster on the way out of the Ahmanson - she definitely broke her wrist, as she's wearing a lovely cast.  Apparently her big number is having to be completely rethought and restaged.  IF the show moves on to NY, one presumes they'll put it back the way it was.

As for the Topic of the Day, the first real celebrity that I ever met in person was Diane Schuur.  I was going to Western Washinton University and in the jazz choir.  She lived in Renton, Washington at the time and the director invited her to come up to Bellingham to sing with the jazz band.  I and this other jazz choir member Todd (who was also in the jazz band) drove down to Renton to pick her up and bring her to Bellingham.  We went into her apartment and I got to touch her Grammy! ;) She only performed with the jazz band, so I didn't get to perform with her.  Todd did, though.  He played the trombone.

Probably the most significant famous person meeting that I've had has been with our very own BK!  (and I'm not just saying this).  I've been a fan ever since I got "Unsung Sondheim" and learned that a CD is more than just the performers and the songs.  I've since gotten a lot of his CDs, even ones that he did before "Unsung Sondheim."  Meeting him in person was quite the experience!  Thanks! ;D
