Well, you've read the notes, you've cracked the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cracked cows come home.

As for today's Topic of the Day...

In my CD player (when I get to work), will be two very lovely CDs that I just received from Tomovoz!  Thank you! :-*

In my DVD player:  three DVDs from Netflix, but I probably won't have time to watch them.

Tonight (Friday) I will be watching "Ghost Whisperer" and "Threshold."

On Saturday and Sunday, I will be ushering for the latest Warren Miller (http://www.warrenmiller.com/) movie that's going to be playing at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.  This is always a hoot to usher for!  I can't wait. :D

I'm listening to WMKV Radio right now. I don't know what I'll listen to as the day progresses.

Sweeney has gotten generally good reviews (with a mixed from Howard Kissel at the Daily News). The Newsday review isn't posted yet. I haven't seen the AP review. I'll have to look for it.

Joy, I'm glad you enjoyed Souvenir. It was quite a funny and moving piece. Even though it's about Florence Foster Jenkins, the show is as much about her accompianist, Cosme. There are some very funny moments with Ms. Kaye giving a wonderful performance as a slightly off-kilter moneyed society matron. The ending, as Joy mentioned, is very touching. While I expected Judy Kaye to be wonderful (and she was), her co-star, Donald Corren, was wonderful. He's been around as both musician (he plays the piano in the show) and performer for many years. He's a real standout. The play treats Miss Foster Jenkins well. She's not mocked or made to look silly. She does hear in a different way. The end of the show lets us see that in a poignant way. If you're in NY I recommend the show.

Ben, I had received a discount flyer to Souveneir a week or so ago, oddly enough,  vixdad had been talking about her only  a few months ago, (I think she figured in a book he was reading called something like "The Book of Heroic Failures" or something like that)  and we were considering whether or not to go... is it family friendly or a grownups only sort of thing?

Had a great time with DR Jason last night. Anthony's been sick with a cold so he skipped last night's movie, East of Eden. The film is a real showcase for Mr. Dean. And Miss Van Fleet deserves her Oscar. What a performance.

I have a small pile of work on my desk so I must attend to it. I'll be back later.

It's not family unfriendly (Souvenir). Vixter might enjoy it. She's a smart girl. If she doesn't mind lots of art songs sung off-key it could be fun for her.

Good Morning!

Sorry to have been E&T for the past 24 hours or so... I just was.

;)

I still have to read the posts from yesterday, as well as today's Notes...  but probably won't get to those until sometime later today - possibly tomorrow.  We shall see...

In the meantime, I have read some of the Sweeney reviews... :)

OH!  And Lestat made Michael Riedel's column in The New York Post this morning...  :-\

...But then again, it is Michael Riedel, so...

Just read highlights from the other reviews. The only one who seemed to be remotely negative about SWEENEY was Howard Kissel, which is not surprising. Yes, everyone gushed over Sondheim's score, but they also loved the production itself - even Brantley.

And about 90% thought Patti was wonderful as Mrs. Lovett under this direction, and I agree. Many of them even pointed out the fact that she rather blends in with the rest of the cast rather than overtaking the show with a star turn, which is a feat for Ms. LuPone.

I'm happy it got the reviews it did - I really loved it and I hope the reviews are enough to keep it running for a while. It's a relatively cheap production - $3.5 million - so if it sells well, we may actually see a Sondheim show recoup its investment!

I didn't watch anything last night as it was pinochole night.
However, Wednesday night, I watched two dvds, one of which is still in the player.

Then I watched Greg Araki's MYSTERIOUS SKIN, which I feel is one of 2005's best films.
I listened to the commentary track yesterday, and now it is time to find my own copy of the film, after I return this one to Netflix.

Beautiful day, cloudless sky, moderate tempoeratures: you know the drill!

Seriously, the weather forecasters have been emphasizing that despite this glorious weather, we're in the midst of a fairly serious drought. Water conservation measures will be taken if we don't get some rain soon.

I'm up, I'm up.  WHY am I up, that's the question.

I'll tell you why I'm up - because I have to finish writing parody lyrics to Everybody Ought To Have A Maid and I've been very lax about it - so yesterday I buckled down Winsocki and started it, and I had words, words, and more words swimming in my head and I woke up at six-thirty and couldn't stop writing words, words, and more words.  I'm now half-way through it.

I'm no big fan of Ms. Lupone (sorry George). But I thought her performance was excellent. She had one little "oh look at me I'm playing the tuba" moment I could have done without but was otherwise a model of restraint.

Last night, returning home from work, we found that Fletcher the klutzy yet curious Dalmatian had knocked the laptop onto the floor.  The good news is not just that the laptop still works, but that in getting knocked on the floor the CDRom drive finally unjammed.  Stephen Schwartz's Uncharted Territory has been stuck in there for practically forever.

So now SS's UT is in the CD player, where it belongs.

As for the DVD player, der Brucer has a stack of current shows that he's been recording because they run opposite other shows he likes to watch.  Just how many crime proceedurals are there, anyhow?  And how can he tell them apart?  They all seem too much alike for my taste.

For those who watch LOST, does anyone have any idea about which castaway will be "lost forever".  They have sort of been implying that this will happen (next week?).  I'm curious to see if it will be somebody major, somebody new, or just somebody we don't really care about.  I can't imagine that it would be Matthew Fox or Evangeline Lily.  Or the guys who play Sawyer, or Sayed (sp?).

DR MAttH:  I had the pleasure of meeting Frank Capra, too.  He visited the Defense Information School in the early 1980s when I was a journalism instructor there.

He was a very unhappy camper at the time as someone had picked his pocket at the Indianapolis airport.

His needs were attended to, his comfort was assured, but he bowed out of attending a dinner in his honor that evening, preferring to rest in his hotel after the stresses of the day.  I don't know how old he was, but I'm sure he was tired and stressed.

I also met Dana Andrews under similar circumstances, but he was in to address the school staff and students, and then out again.  Only had a chance to shake his hand and tell him how much I admired his work.

He was much shorter than I would ever have thought he'd be.

I hate to be persnickety, but.....no, wait!  Actually I don't hate it at all.

I love being persnickety.

It's perfunctory I hate...when it's being directed at me.  I don't mind being perfunctory, but I don't admire it in others.

Persnicketiness, though, I relate to and can accommodate each per and snick as needed.

Dr Jason,

With all going on in my life in the past week I never was able to  respond to many things I wanted to .  One of them was your concerns re family.

Do not worry .

My parents have been there for me continously, as well as raising me  they have been the weekday babysitters for the Vixter since she was 6 weeks old and I had to come back to work full time....(sometimes there is no choice in these matters no matter WHAT certain right wing groups like to say)

They have goone far and beyond whatever could have been expected of them as parents, and grandparents. I love them dearly and I am immensely grateful to them.

AND

I cannot have a single conversationwith either one of them either by phone or in person where they do not irratate me to the point where I want to scream

Ah, yes.  The familial conundrum.  Our parents want the best for us, and often think they know what it is, or think they know we don't know what it is, or, think that whatever they say is for our own good.

One day, DR Debra Mann, the vixter will feel exactly those feelings, too.

And there's little -- PRECIOUS little -- that you can do to avert it.  It goes with the territory.

Thank you again one and all for all the wonder "get well" vibes for the Vixter yesterday, that mmust have done the trick because she slept through the night for the first time since Monnday and finally awoke with a normal temperature and her customary smile.  She is still coughing  a bit and hasn't really eaten all week (except for soup) so today she is still at my folks instead of school, but she is  finally eating solids  and starting to sound and act like herself again.

Since she started nursery school at age 3 she has only missed a total five days of school for illness until this, so this was a huge deal for her, to miss an entire week.

Well. . .I've just come in from a frantic day of PERSNICKITY Christmas shopping to find on the voice mail - ANOTHER interview on Monday!  When it rains it pours, and I'm fairly certain that by the time all of this is over, I'll receive several calls on the same day, inquiring whether or not I will begin work for their company post haste!

As for that Page Two Dance with darlin' Joe Nichols. . .I just can't wait to read later what DR TCB will have to say about him.   :-X

this is all I could find about gams

Webster's has "gamba" as Italian for "leg".

Main Entry: 1gam
Pronunciation: 'gam
Function: noun
Etymology: probably ultimately from Lingua Franca gamba leg, from Italian, from Late Latin
Date: 1781

There is an instrument called the "viola de gamba"---violin of the legs---which is sorta like a cello which is played between the legs.

DR Jennifer, as I understand it, the LOST casulty will be someone major. I have no idea who it will be, but I'm thinking Walt. I have also read that it may be Shannon, but again, that's just wild speculation.

Is it happening this coming Wednesday?

I hope it's not walt, but I don't really consider him to major.  I don't really think Shannon is that major either.

I had read that the actor playing Walt is not going to be on the show for a little bit to see if he grows a lot (puberty time).  They've only been on the island for 44 days or so and if he had a major growth spurt within that short amount of time, it wouldn't be natural.  But then, maybe they can write it into the story.  Who knows?

It is still celebrated as "Canada Day" I think . For Colin's Birthday no doubt as he has visited beautiful Canada on two occasions).

Then I watched last night's REUNION. So, we finally found out which of the six stars is going to be murdered. And the most obvious suspect of the five (the priest) doesn't seem to be the most obvious to me at all.

The age make-up for these young cast people to make them look in their late 30s is pretty terrible, I think. (The girls come off better than the boys).

One funny line last night: one of the girls is an actress trying to break into Hollywood, and last night (set in 1989) her agent said he had set her up for a meeting with the producers for the film that's going to be the blockbuster of the year - HUDSON HAWK! I laughed out loud at that line.

Then, I put in Alfred Hitchcock's MR. AND MRS. SMITH. Not a great comedy or a great movie and totally different from anything else Hitchcock did in Hollywood. Supposedly, he did it as a favor for Carol Lombard, but honestly, he seems to throw it to Robert Montgomery. For me, it's his picture.

I have to admit, I did laugh more at this today than I did the first (and only other) time I saw it. I think Montgomery was a very good light comedian.

Jennifer, I think Walt and Shannon were both major characters last year, much more so than many who have recently surfaced this season while neither of them has been used much at all recently. I don't think either would be missed, but I still contend that the major roles they played last year makes them major characters. (I think anyone who has received a major backstory flashback is a major character; don't see how you could think otherwise.)

Yes, I read that about the young actor playing Walt growing up too fast for the time line of the show. I think he's served his usefulness and could be dispensed with unless they have big plans for him later that we can't know about now.

DR MattH, I guess with so many characters on LOST they are all major and yet supporting.  I just find many of the others to be much more major than Shannon or Walt.  To me the main character is Matthew Fox. And then I would consider Evangeline Lily, the guy who plays Sawyer, the guy who plays Sayed, and then probably the bald guy that used to be in the wheel chair and the black guy (sorry i forget their names).

It never occured to me that the kid playing Walt might be growing too fast. That would definitely be problematic.  I think that I would miss him though if he was the one killed. Because he seems to have some special powers, and I want to find out more about that.

I wonder why they are killing someone else off? :(

There are also Sun and Jin, who are very major to me, as are Hurley and Charley and Michael.  The bald guy is Locke.

Hello from Kinko's!  I will miss the lovely ladies at Kinko's who made my internet life so fantastic.  Yesterday I brought them a bag of Garret's Popcorn:  cheddar and caramel flavors.  A very yummilicious treat.  Bernita, Keshia, Rena and LaNora have been patient and helpful.  I love Chicago!!!!

Good but long dress rehearsal  today, and now I have to put on my suit and head for Symphony Hall.  I will be happy to be home tomorrow afternoon.  I need good traveling vibes as well as vibes for flying standby on an earlier flight, please.

DRJoy, your CD is an ass for not calling Montego in to sing; she's faqntastic and I think she'll get great reviews for this concert.

Dylan says the mono test came back negative so he still doesn't know the problem.  If he's not better by Tuesaday, I'm taking the train to Purchase and raising hell in the Health Center.

Back from my music copyist, which took forever - lots of wrong notes in the melody, a few wrong rhythms, and some stuff to fix in the accompaniment, but we did it and those two songs are out of the way, and she has one to go.  Waiting on my pal Gary Stockdale to play me a couple of songs that are candidates for the LACC show.

Also, got a flu shot for the first time ever.  They were doing them at the drugstore I go to with the mini-post office.  There was no line, so I just did it - hopefully now I won't get the flu this season.

"ONCE

Then your fingers touched
My silent heart
And taught it how to sing.
Yes....true love's....a many splendored thing."

Monday job interview vibes for DR td!

Friday evening greetings - back from Columbus, where I stood around in front of the absolutely gorgeous display that my library's graphic artist created out of my concept and talked up the Foundation Center to several hundred Ohio college and university librarians.  Saw some long time friends, from two professional lifetimes ago, and sat at lunch next to the guy who now (newly) occupies the position I walked away from 20 years ago when DS Rob was born.  That was a little weird.

Nice guys really (one removed a couple of dead critters from under the house) and I think they are done.  We now have our bedroom heater repaired and have more heating vents and control zones than before.  Now we won't have to roast in one room to keep another room warm.

And I now have an outside temperature gage so I will have a better idea how to dress for my morning walks. :D

my feets of clay don't wanna be covered with feets of snow!! Worser and worser they measure things in metrics or meters or some other godforsaken measuring method  no civilized  body ever heard of  :o and they can't even tell the  temperature in a nice normal Farenheit they keep talking about so many "C"  ??? and the REALLY scary thing is the "C" number is so low at this time of year its usually a negative "C'   :P I'm not  into negativity man.... especially when it come to temperature!!  ;D ;D

Wow, google Dylans symptoms & several things come up.  Now elmore don’t start panicking. It is the beginning of the flu season & he just might be coughing too hard.

Symptoms of TB are cough, fever, night sweats, loss of weight, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes (often in the neck), later lung disease with blood-stained sputum and chest pain.

Symptoms of histoplasmosis?
Some healthy people have no signs and symptoms of a histoplasmosis infection. When healthy people have signs and symptoms, they are usually mild and last two to three weeks. Mild signs and symptoms include fever, chills, and fatigue (tiredness). They also include headaches, chest pain, and a dry cough. Seek care immediately if:
If you have trouble breathing or begin coughing up blood.

Aspergillosis
A fungal infection--resulting from the fungus Aspergillus--of the lungs that can spread through the blood to other organs. Symptoms include fever, chills, difficulty in breathing, and coughing up blood.

DR vixmom - cute pictures - glad to hear The Vixter is feeling better!

Thanks! Yes she's doing much better, I think she'll be ready for school on Monday, physically  AND mentally.

One nice thing, her science teacher called me today to see how she was and find out if there was anything he could do to facilitate her "getting back in the groove" next week... I called her guidance counselor (who is supposed to be doing that sort of thing) 3 x before I got a call from her and in fact the science teacher called before she did... he promised to meet with the other teachers since its at the end of term and arrange a schedule for her to take all her term final exams in such a way so that she wasn't stressed out with getting them all at once.. (They were originally spread all across this past week but the school policy is that you make up any missed tests the first day you're back, which would have meant term finals in Spanish, Science, Math, Social Studies all on the same day!!

We already got a note home this afternoon that she can take her Spanish final after school on Monday. and the Science teacher said she could take his test on Wednesday and he offered extra help Tuesday afternoon!

I watched two movies tonight on DVD. First up was THE HARVEY GIRLS.

Don't know why I picked it off the shelf to watch as I've been listening to the ANNIE GET YOUR GUN soundtrack all day on CD and was kind of leaning toward watching that movie tonight.

Anyway, it does look splendid with no print damage or artifacts at all that I could see. Amazing that Angela Lansbury was a teenager when playing Em.

Then I put in STAR WARS III. I had seen it at the theater this past summer, so there were no surprises. The DVD player I used for the film has an HDMI connection which is a pure digital connection between the digital DVD and the digital TV. The movie, which was filmed digitally, never enters the analog realm in this set-up. Thus, the extensive CGI was pristine looking and, of course, the movie was sharp as a tack.

I do have a back surround speaker in addition to the rear surrounds in my home theater so I was able to appreciate the extensive Dolby EX sound field for the film. Very spectacular.

[I still say that LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING contains the most extensive and rich soundtrack of any film in my collection. The extended version which I have has both Dolby EX and DTS-ES sound, and it's the DTS-ES that is so astounding.]

For some reason, I got very hungry during my film watching tonight, but I fought and fought the cravings. I thought about making nachos. I thought about having some soup. I thought about the bag of Tootsie Roll miniatures that didn't get distributed on Monday since no one rang the doorbell for Halloween. I considered microwave popcorn.

But I resisted all of it. I am proud of me (but my stomach is angry and feels neglected).

No, STAR WARS III is not a great film by any stretch of the imagination. It's not even great adventure. It's too long; the climactic light sabre duel between Vader and Obi-Wan could have been at least five minutes shorter.

I remember being shocked by how terrible Samuel L. Jackson is in the film. He's a tremendously talented actor, and in this, he's as wretched as Christiansen. Ewan McGregor, who's not my favorite actor at all, is the best of the stars, I think.

Loved those pix, vixmom!
I, too, watched STAR WARS III tonight - I hadn't seen it in the theaters, but, still - there were no surprises. (well, maybe the nod to MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL's Black Knight).  I've said it before, and I'll say it again - George Lucas is a technical genius, but as a director working with actors. . .I dunno, I'd like to think that the initial STAR WARS casts brought so much more to their parts than anyone in this second trilogy.
On the other hand, story-wise, I think that after only one viewing, SITH has become my second favorite STAR WARS vehicle.

RE: The Union Musician's walk-out - now Lock Out - at Radio City Music Hall.

I'm actually a member of the same union, the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802 - well, I will be as soon as my paperwork goes through next week.  -However, I am a member of the DC Local of the AFM.

The Radio City Music Hall musicians have a totally different contract than the Broadway musicians have, so the walk-out doesn't those of us on the Great White Way right now.  From the little I've read, it sounds like Radio City pulled a "something" off the contract negotiation table at the last minute.  *Of course, Radio City pre-records all their music for promotional spots and their annual Christmas tours, so they had the tapes to use for the subsequent performances.

-And my question is - and this is not from "union" mind - Since Radio City Music Hall is not paying a pit of LIVE musicians right now, are those audience members who paid FULL price to see and hear a LIVE show going to get partial refund of their ticket price reflecting the amount that would have gone into the musician's payroll fund?

DR elmore - I hope Dylan gets better soon.  -From the symptoms you described, it sounds like Dylan may have something similar to what I had two springs ago - a double bacterial: a sinus infection and a throat infection that ended up "colliding" in my mouth and causing all sort of problems.

-The coughing up of blood could be the result of some serious acid reflux.

Have the clinic docs do a swab of his tongue and check it under the microscope.  He may need a serious round of antibiotics, plus something like Prevacid to control the acid refulx - which will only get 'worse' when he's on the anti-biotics.

All in all, we had a very nice evening.   And I have to say that I haven't felt this comfortable and at ease with someone in a long time.  We shall see...

As for Sweeney Todd - I loved it too!  And Ms. LuPone really controls herself throughout the production.  -Well, maybe there's a flash or two of "PATTI" in one or two spots, but for the most part, it's a very non-star turn performance.. But still a wonderful one!

*And since the staging calls for everyone to be on stage when the curtain goes up - and throughout the rest of the show - there's no chance of any "inappropriate" entrance applause.

I'm back and must now sit on my couch like so much fish, as my brain has been working overtime all the livelong day and night.  Had a very interesting evening, about which more later.

The plot synopsis of THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE on the LP has something I cannot reconcile. One of Jamie's wishes is to have a son who can speak Gaelic. When Jamie gets married, it turns out his wife is barren, as are all the women in her line, "childless for generations," quoth the liner notes. But where on earth did the wife come from, then??

And as for Lestat... (again)...

This really has been a wonderful week.  Truly a "dream week".  Yes, it will be "sad" leaving the show after tomorrow, but this whole week was not supposed to be "mine" anyway originally.  I was not supposed to be in Lestat land until sometime in mid-February.  Again, my "dream" ended up coming true a few months ahead of schedule.  Truly a blessing.

And then this coming Tuesday, I get to have another "meet and greet" with a whole new cast of people down at Arena Stage.

And a final word or two about opinions -

As for my opinion - It really is just too early to form an opinion, a judgment of the show.   I was just exposed to the whole thing this week.  Others have been with the show for months already, some for years.  Once the show becomes what it's supposed to be, then maybe I'll post a thought or two.  But for now, I'd rather just comment on my experiences and pass on greetings to whomever I'm supposed to pass on greetings to and from.  ;)

And for YOUR opinions - If any DRs will be seeing the show - I know at least two DRs have already purchased their tickets - please feel free to post your thoughts and reviews here on HHW.  This is one instance where just "being the piano player" is a good thing.  My personal investment in the show is not so highly staked as say the actors and creative team.  Yes, if the show gets raked over the coals and ends up closing sooner than anyone would like, well.. that's just the biz.  And if it ends up running for years and years, well, that's just the biz too.

I've always liked reading reviews of shows I'm involved with  - the good, the bad and the ugly.  I know some people who truly do not read any reviews, and I understand where they're coming from.  For me, however, it's always been "fun" to see what someone "official" things of the show.  They don't bother me.

Patti did get a little applause (when she first moved or something) by the audience I was a part of.

She also got bigger applause than Cerveris, which I found slightly out of whack with caliber of performance. But one never knows whose people are in the audience.

And since I do have rehearsal in a couple of hours... And since the trains will be running "strangely" this weekend due to a ton of track work, I want to head out a bit earlier just to make sure I make it to midtown on time... And since I am tired and sleepy...

OH!....

Has the applause made Patti melt?

BK - If you happen to see Larry Blank again, please say HI for me.  -And as it turns out, I had dinner earlier tonight with one of his assitants/friends, Jim May.  He's in town rehearsing White Christmas - he'll be the assistant conductor for the L.A. company.

DR Rodzinski, did you decide which of the 50 movie musicals you will start with?

I shall now return to watching WAR OF THE PLANETS starring Tony Russel, Lisa Gastoni, and a whole lot of Italian actors battling Diaphanoids!

Well, I want to watch THE GREAT GABBO.
Then I want to watch DIXIANA.
But there are a couple that feature the great Mantan Moreland, so I'd like to see those as well.
When I'll begin, gosh knows. I still have to watch the killer tree movie!

I watched my first three programs of the fall season tonight, all on CBS:

GHOST WHISPERER (C-)  It was just okay, but the guy playing the husband gets an A.

THRESHOLD (B-)  I enjoyed tonight's episode, but i kept wondering how long they can keep this premise going.  One season?  Maybe two?

NUMBERS (B+) I know it isn't a new show this season, but I had never seen it.  If I was Rob Morrow I would sue the costumer on that show and the camera crew.  Toegether, they manage to make the already short Mr Morrow look like he is only three feet tall.  I liked the younger brother, and it seemed to be a very well-paced episode.

I finally saw the soup commercial!!!!  I have been trying to see it for weeks, now I'm sitting here watching Lisa Marie on Biography and almost missed it!

I was able to tape two different versions for DR Ben and mailed it off today!  One has John Lithgow wearing a blue suit with red all around the jacket edges.  The other one (taped off of the TV Guide channel, so it's squished into the top 2/3rds of the screen) had John wearing pajamas and a bathrobe.

AND I got The Last Starfighter today!!  Thanks!  I'll listen to it this weekend, when I'm not ushering at the new Warren Miller movie (for which I'll be ushering three times!).

I'll see Larry Blank at Monday's session and will say hey.  Also, I know I probably speak for everyone here when I say that whatever Jose feels comfortable posting, we're all having a splendidly splendid time reading his thoughts on being involved in Lestat.
