Title: THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
Post by: bk on November 07, 2005, 12:15:23 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've tunneled through the notes, and now you simply must post until the cows come home - they're in the tunnel now, but they're always in the tunnel because they've got Cowpel Tunnel Syndrome. ::)

I like A Very Special Love by the Ames Brothers.  I love El Matador by the Kingston Trio.  I love 26 Miles by The Four Preps.  I love Up on the Roof by the Drifters.  I love Ferry Cross The Mersey by Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Don't think of Gerry & the Pacemakers as a boyband.
Same with Freddie, Herman, The Beatles and the Stones..

The Hollies were good:

And that leads me to:

Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young).

Beach Boys.

Oh so many!

As previously named:

The Brothers Four - their FIRST album is a favorite, including Banua, I Never Will Marry, and Zulu Warrior

The Four Aces - especially their movie themes Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, Three Coins in the Fountain

Four Preps - 26 Miles, another vote for that one!

Chairmen of the Board - who sang two terrific Holland-Dozier-Holland tunes: Give Me Just a Little More Time and You've Got Me Dangling On A String!

Well being a child of the 60's & 70's (the NINETEEN 60's & 70's for the benefit of you younguns amongst us)  the Osmonds and Jackson Five were favoritesof mine when I was grwoing up.

Donny and I are the same age

<sigh>

Oh and of  course the Monkees were mandatory for my age group

does Bread count asa boy group or were they already "men"?

The TOD IS when we were growing up.... not at this time isn't it?

I have, on occasion, done considerable listening on the phone.

Do The Cowsills count as a boy band?

They started out that way, but their mother and younger sister joined them for a while.

They seemed a bit edgy for their time.  In fact, the boys were apparently not interested in maintaining a squeaky clean image and their label (MGM) wasn't happy about that.  They still exist, believe it or not, although one of the men has been missing since Hurricane Katrina and none of the family have heard from him.

There were a few Jackson 5 songs I enjoyed in the early 70s.

I remember seeing the Osmonds on TV in the late 60s or early 70s and they seemed cool. I think when Donny became a front-and-center fixture, I stopped taking them seriously.  I don't know why.

Ivan the Terrible is an endocentric construction.

So is William the Conqueror and the Eiffel Tower.

Come to think of it, the Hoover Dam makes the grade, too.

I'm up because...well...same old, same old.

I'm making iced tea, that's why.  And the tea bags are steeping in hot water as I type.

I suppose I should be standing over them enjoying the benefits of the steam, but I'd much rather be miserable here typing these words for an elusive, absent readership.
Title: Re:THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

This will be an unbearably short work-week (endocentric, that construction) for me, as I am off today and Friday (Friday being Veterans Day) (well bust my buttons, ANOTHER endocentric construction).

Somehow, I shall strive to endure it.
Title: Re:THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
Post by: Ron Pulliam on November 07, 2005, 05:04:06 AM
I'ts nearly time to finish off the iced tea and reconsider my sleeping options.

Do I go back to bed, or do I stay up, putter around as the sun comes up, and think about a nap later in the day.

How on earth do self-employed, retired or otherwise free-from-all-cares people handle such decisions when they have limitless variables to choose from?

My mom prefers a structured regimen.  I, on the other hand, have always had a streak of night owl in me, and can stay up until all hours.  I rather think I'll be all over the place in my dotage, in that regard.

The iced tea is made (well, it doesn't have ice in it, but it's in the refrigerator).

All anxieties concerned with it are put to rest until it's all gone and I have to do it again.

I suppose that's why some folks just buy a jar of Nestea or its equivalent.

It's clear to me now that a few more winks will be best for me.  I've taken some sinus relief tabs and my eyelids are begging -- nay, screaming -- to be closed.

Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, healthy Monday.   Be kind to one another out there.

Make a new friend, heal an old wound, kick an old bastard or bitch.

You know...run the gamut.

And not just A-B.

Good morning, Ron!

I left for Chicago the day after the time changed, I'm now back in my one time zone, and I don't know what time it is!  I could not get to sleep last night, and I was up way too late.  I dragged myself out of bed because I have too much to do today:  hit the post office, pick up new glasses, a 10 am meeting about orchestrations for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus Holiday concert at Carnegie Hall next month, refill two prescriptions, and pick up some concert work for a singer named Mario Frangoulis.  The deadline on the Frangoulis work is so close that I turned down a ticket from Liz Callaway for Leah Salonga's Carnegie Hall concert tonight and my monthly dinner tomorrow night with my music librarian friends.

Mornin', y'all!

Ugh!  I think I'm coming down with something.  I'll have to down some Airborne throughout the day.  I don't know if this stuff actually works or not, but I get a kick out of dropping the little tablets into a cup of water and watching them fizz.  Reminds me of Fizzies from the hood of my child.

TOD:

Whenever I hear the words "boy group" I tend to think of cheesy, bubblegum music, so nothing is immediately coming to mind.  I kind of confuzed by some of the choices people are making--a lot of these bands are out of the age range I would consider as boys.  What's the criteria for a boy group?

DR MB, I happened to catch some of THE GREEN SLIME on Friday when I got home.  I wish I knew it was coming on--I would have recorded it.  Awful, awful movie but one of my childhood favorites--I actually saw it in a movie theatre (Yes, one must view it on the big screen in order to fully appreciate its grandeur . ::) )

THE GREEN SLIME was featured on one of my favorite covers of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.  I wonder if I still have that issue...

My Internet Explorer has been acting up lately, so I'm trying to post this through AOL.  I'll see if it works.

I guess we're considering "Man Bands" to be Boy Bands for the topic of the day, so I'll include:

Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
The Spinners cover of Working My Way Back to You
REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling

DR FJL, you've spurred an 80s flashback for me:

Duran Duran
Culture Club
Ah-Ha
Flock of Seagulls
Depeche Mode
Curiosity Killed The Cat
Spandau Ballet
Crowded House
The Knack (a 70s group, technically)
Adam and the Ants
The Cars
The Clash
Devo
Huey Lewis and the News

Good Morning!

I'm up.  I'm up.

...And I think I'm just going to stay put here in Fairfax today, instead of heading down to Richmond for the day.  There are a couple of things I need to take care of today, and I'm just not in the mood to spend four hours (round trip) in a car today.  (Even though I've done that before.)  We'll see.

In any case...

As for the Topic of the Day...

DITTO

;)

Besides the ones already mentioned, Rockapella comes to mind too.  And when I'm in the right mood/mode, N*Sync and The Backstreet Boys can provide a nice pick-me-up.  -But O-Town - the group from "Making the Band" - is always good for a good laugh.

ANother in the long string of fantabulous days here in Carolina. And again it's going up to the low 80s in a few days.

An article in today's paper commented that this isn't the first time this has happened. 2002 had a similar lengthy string of warmer than normal days without rain.

(Our last rain was October 11, and it only briefly drizzled then.)

DR Elmore: Sorry to hear you won't be at Carnegie tonight. I'll be there with a couple of Richard Jay Alexander's comps. :)

My upper lip is swollen to about three times its normal size today. I have a fever blister/cold sore/whatever the heck you wanna call it. I usually get them after I've been sick or really stressed out. Mom and Dad left a week ago tomorrow. Guess it was stress. :) Anyway, I look like I could do PHANTOM this afternoon sans the makeup, unfortunately, and I had forgotten how bloody painful these suckers can be. I got some stuff to put on it last night, but it's a thick brown goo that dried up overnight, giving me a Gorbachev-like gravy stain look on my upper lip. I spent a good 15 minutes cleaning it off this morning, so now I just look like I've been in a fight rather than looking like I've hit the mashed potatoes and gravy.

I agree that "Housewives" was back up to snuff, as they say back home. I have theories about where the whole George/Bree thing is going, and I thought Teri Hatcher's performance last night was wonderful. Her last scene was superbly done. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for her to do that.

"Grey's Anatomy" just gets more brilliant with every episode.

Here is a short obit for Sheree North taken from the Sun Sentinel in Florida via the Los Angeles Times:

LOS ANGELES · Sheree North, a platinum blond bombshell of 1950s musicals who is remembered by younger audiences for her continuing television roles as Lou Grant's sultry girlfriend on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Kramer's mother Babs on Seinfeld, has died. She was 72.

Ms. North, who had been in good health, died Friday at a Los Angeles hospital of complications following surgery, said her daughter, Dawn Bessire of Santa Monica.

Groomed as a studio glamour girl who could substitute for the more famous but often unreliable Marilyn Monroe, Ms. North was later interviewed or cast in documentaries and shows about Monroe.

Born Dawn Bethel in Los Angeles on Jan. 17, 1933, Ms. North danced as a youngster with USO shows during World War II and made her film debut in 1951 in Excuse My Dust, starring Red Skelton. Her movies included The Outfit with Robert Duvall in 1973, The Shootist starring John Wayne in 1976 and the 1991 thriller Defenseless with Barbara Hershey and Sam Shepard.

The actress had guest roles in such top series as The Virginian, The Fugitive, Cannon, McMillan and Wife, Kojak, Hawaii Five-O, Fantasy Island and The Golden Girls. She earned Emmy nominations for appearances on Marcus Welby, M.D. and Archie Bunker's Place.

Today also marks the fortieth birthday of someone we all know and love.  It was on this day, in 1965, that the Pillsbury Doughboy, a.k.a. "Poppin' Fresh," was introduced to the world, via a commercial for crescent rolls.

Speaking of Gazelles with lobotomies (nice segue, eh?), for those that are interested, the NPR documentary I have referenced a few times here is now slated for a November 16 broadcast on All Things Considered.  Entitled "My Lobotomy," it is the heart-wrenching first-person account by a man who was 12 when Walter Freeman lobotomized him in 1960.  Luckily for this gentleman, it didn't seem to affect him much--he is highly functioning, has pretty normal affect and is married with children.  I provided quite a bit of background material to the producers on the lobotomies Freeman did or supervised at Western State Hospital outside of Ft. Steilacoom in Washington state.

TOD:  well I'll mention one that probably nobody has heard of, the Brasilian close-harmony group MPB4.  Unbelievably gorgeous music and I highly recommend them.

However, in reference to other people's choices:  my high school English teacher is Bread's David Gates' cousin.  In fact, Mr. Gates (my teacher, that is) told us that fact the same day that he announced he had gotten engaged.  Guess which subject was more interesting to us.  And my ex-brother-in-law was speech therapist to the two eldest Osmond kids, who are deaf (no, I don't think they were in the band  :P).  And DS Betsy got to meet 3 of the 4 Monkees during their reunion tour when they did an in-person at the Milwaukee radio station where she was news anchor.  Pretty exciting, eh?

Well, I've just had to make two not-so-nice phone calls in order to hopefully rectify some repeated "delays".  "Well, all the other mail that people said they sent me last week has already come in...  Except yours."

Again...  If you haven't sent the check, just tell me you haven't sent the check.  I know your company is known for not making timely payments as it is.  If you're still "processing the invoice", then that's all I need to know right now.  Just please stop repeatedly telling me that you sent the check out a week ago each time I call you!?!?!?!

I got a coupon in the mail from Tower and decided to get a few things, including the re-recording of Mannix by Lalo Schifrin (he has been re-recording all of his scores over the last few years).  Unfortunately it's markedly inferior to the original.  Lalo's piano solo is one of the sloppiest things I've heard in a long time (at least IMHO).  Did anyone download the original when Rodzinski posted a link some time ago?  I just realized I never finished and only got the first 10 tracks.  If someone got those last two and could email them to me, I'd be forever grateful (ooh, a John Bucchino reference).

DR vixmom - Thanks for the Assorted Vibes...

I don't think I'll be heading down to Richmond today - even though I would like to.  Just too many things to get done here today before tomorrow's first rehearsal.  And I also want to stay "reachable" over the next few hours just in case I actually end up getting the follow up phone calls and e-mails I've been promised by various people.

I also agree that DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES was very good last night.  All 4 women had interesting storylines.  And we had enough outrageous moments to make it seem like DH of last year.

SPOILERS.

I liked Bree coming out with hives. I loved Paul Young's return (and you just knew he would blab to the plumber). I loved Gabrielle and the lawyer getting shot. And I really liked Lynette's boss pulling off the tag (again you knew this was going to happen).

I liked watching the women together (i wish they would do more of this).  And there was no black family story last night, not sure why.  But I actually didn't miss it.  Not enjoying that too much.

I don't watch the WEST WING anymore. But I happened to catch some of last night's debate.  It was sort of weird. Basically it was just Jimmy Smitts and Alan Alda answering questions. With a moderator, and an audience.

I'd be interested to know how much of it was scripted and how much of it was ad lib.

Well...  One follow-up mail received... The check did not end up getting mailed until Friday - even though I was told it was cut and mailed last Wednesday when they called me up in NYC.  And if it's not here by this Wednesday... Well...

So...  A check is mailed from suburban Maryland on Friday to the big, regional post office in Fairfax.  The regional post office that all the mail for Fairfax, VA, has to go through.  Hmm...

And in the meantime, I've had mail from Baltimore and DC that was sent out Saturday(!) reach me this morning...

Hmm...

I enjoy a nice peanut butter sandwich with a bowl of chicken soup. It's good for dipping. My throat swells up and I can't breathe afterward, but BOY! does it taste good...

I also enjoy a nice grilled cheese sandwich with my chili. Again - good for dipping if the chili is a little soupy.

I know we've talked about this before many moons ago, but...does anyone else here put spaghetti noodles in their chili? That's how they served it when I was in school and that's how I've made it ever since.

I think that's probably because they haven't made that family terribly interesting yet.

I will tell you that I think Alfre Woodard is a phenomenal actress and her role in DH hasn't yet tapped the core of her potential brilliance.  Perhaps, when our major characters finally get involved in her story, and she opens up, we'll see something really involving from her.

Has BK defined his "boy band" for TOD yet?  I think any group comprised of underaged lads a "boy band."

Any group comprised of "over-18" men, to be a male group.

So if it's either, I'm going to have to say:

The Eagles
America
Blood Sweat & Tears
Chicago
Montrose
The Moody Blues
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (and Young)
Uriah Heep
Grand Funk Railroad
Rolling Stones
Grateful Dead
Yes
Santana

DR Vixmom: I thought JERSEY BOYS was alright - it's basically a VH1 Behind the Music special live onstage with a Frankie Valli impersonator. A very, very talented Frankie Valli impersonator, mind you. If I had grown up on that music, I think I would have enjoyed it a great deal more than I did. My mother LOVED it, as did 98% of the audience. Many of them danced, clapped and sang their way through the show - a practice for which I am not a big fan - but they were clearly having a great time. Is it my favorite show? Absolutely not. Is it a good time? You betcha.

I know we've talked about this before many moons ago, but...does anyone else here put spaghetti noodles in their chili? That's how they served it when I was in school and that's how I've made it ever since.

DR Jason - My mom always puts spaghetti in her chili, but I do not.  Of course, the Cincinnati way to serve chili is ON TOP of spaghetti.

That sounds like a song cue!!

On top of spaghetti
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball

Good Afternoon!

Post office - Done!  DR vixmom - The vixter should be receiving something in the mail in about two to three days.  :)

*And it was also very nice of the USPS to reimburse me in cash for their "failed delivery" of an Express Mail package I sent a few weeks ago.  I was expecting to be to told to expect to receive a check in the mail in 4-6 weeks, but, no, the clerk opened his cash drawer and refunded my $13.65 right on the spot!

Lunch - Done - The Chinese place near here.  Their $4.95 lunch special has always been a great deal.  They serve their food in those styrofoam take out containers - whether your eat in or take out.  And the servers always just fill those containers to the brim.  Very generous portions.

Hair cut - Done.  Ah... It's nice to feel and look kept again.  I was starting to get a little shaggy in NYC towards the end of last week.

So, at least some of the aggravation from this morning has been alleviated by my most pleasant afternoon so far.  And now I must take care of some cleaning, put some toys away (apparently, my niece and nephew came over over the weekend, and pulled every single toy out of their boxes here - of course, all those boxes are currently in the room I'm staying in... And all the toys are all over the floor of the room I'm staying in, so...), do a few loads of laundry...  Oh, and there's that chart I've been meaning to finish since last week, so...  And I actually may have to make one more trip back to post office this afternoon too.  -At least they're open until 8:00pm.

Well...

So...

DR Ginny - I LOVE my chili with spaghetti, but not necessarily ON TOP of the spaghetti. I know that's the Cincinnati way to do it, but they always seem to have too much pasta and not enough of the good stuff. I just remember thinking chili day at school was the best. The chili was soupy (I'm now a fan of thick chili - stick to your ribs kind of chili) with spaghetti noodles and greasy grilled cheese sammiches. YUUUU-HUM!

Did anybody tape or DVR  last night's West Wing?  I completely forgot about it.  I can't get my brain to remember its on Sunday instead of Thursday Wednesday this year!

I would be very grateful for a copy of last night's debate if anyone would care to send it to me

When I was at the theater last night, a fellow usher, Mary, lamented that she forgot to set her VCR to tape last night's "West Wing."  I said that I could call my parents and ask my dad to tape it because he watches the show.  I called and my mom answered and she said that she would tell my dad to tape it.  I just called and my dad DID tape it, so I can get the tape from my parents and make a copy...if no one else has responded already.  Sadly, neither I nor my parents have a DVR, so it'll be a VHS tape.  Also, a woman that I work with sent out an e-mail today asking if anyone had taped it, so she wants a copy, as well!

But I'm curious.  I had read that they did it twice like "Will and Grace," once for the east coast and once for the west.  Did anyone on the east coast tape it?  Want to compare??

Yes, I'm curious if Smits was as tongue-tied for the east coast version as the west coast.  I was thinking maybe it was fatigue.  The difference in stage experience between Alda and Smits was pretty apparent, IMHO.

All that promotion CBS did this past month has certainly gone to waste on us HHW'ers.  We are a hype-proof bunch.

Okay, how about this one:  did anyone watch the Broadway on Evening At Pops special on PBS?  It was a very entertaining hour with clips of a lot of B'way performers in a more relaxed mode and having a good time.  I could kick myself for not recording it--I don't see any upcoming repeats on any of the PBS channels in my area.

Everyone's favorite kewpie doll, Bernadette Peters, was the show's host.  I usually don't like to comment on a person's looks, but, man--she was botoxed to the max!  She couldn't have done her patented pouty face if she tried.  Why don't people age gracefully anymore?

I moved to Salem in January of 1984. I had been working at Bi-Mart in Ashland, Oregon part-time while also working at the Marc Antony Hotel part-time. Both jobs ended so I decided to move to Salem, where my sister and her family lived, as a new Bi-Mart was opening in that area. I got the job and settled in Oregon's capital where I have been stuck remained ever since.

CAUTION:  OFF-COLOR HUMOR AHEAD

The man stuck to the toilet seat reminds me of one of my Mom's favorite jokes.  It's a long joke, but the crux of it is that a husband had painted the toilet seat, the wife got stuck on it, and the husband unscrews the toilet seat, and the wife lies down on the bed, the doctor comes to give an opinion, and says "It's really beautiful, but why did you have to frame it?"

My Mom can drag that joke out into a five-minute performance.  That line "It's really beautiful, but why did you have to frame it?" has become a catchphrase in my family, applied mostly to photos on walls and such.  Just wanted to share.  :)

Well, it may not be entirely so - (and it may be an urban legend) - but I was told that a dentist who lived in my area many years ago was having trouble with his septic tank system.

It frustrated him so much, that finally one day he dropped an explosive charge into the tank.  At that same moment, inside the house, his wife seated herself upon the convenience.

At the moment of detonation, all contents of the septic tank were blown INTO the house through said convenience, sending said contents and said wife flying into to air of the bathroom.  Said wife divorced said dentist.

The VARIETY review for JERSEY BOYS was definitely mixed. The critic admitted that the audience seemed to be having a fine time with the familiar tunes, but he didn't like the book, and the staging left something to be desired, too. For every positive thing he had to say about the show, he found at least one to two negative things to point out.

I made a conscious decision to move 40 miles away from my family's home once I had saved enough money to be able to rent an apartment, buy furniture, and not have to eat soap three meals a day. I loved my family, but it was very important for me to have privacy, and in the town where they lived (and where I lived with them after college while working on my master's degree), I would have had NO privacy at all.

Also, the arts scene was a thousand times more variable here than in that town.

For every positive thing he had to say about the show, he found at least one to two negative things to point out.

I'd dare say one could make the exact same statement of about 99.99% of the shows that have opened on Broadway in the last 20 years. Many of the critics - myself included - went in wanting to hate JERSEY BOYS because it's another jukebox musical. I have to admit, there really wasn't that much not to like. The cast is wonderful, the staging is more than adequate, the book is what it is, and the choreography was great. That being said, there were many things "wrong" with the show, too.

I will say, I think the show wouldn't be half as successful without Mr. Young playing Mr. Valli. He's a true discovery.

Next up was ROME which has upped the intrigue mightily in the last week or two, but it's condensed ROman history too much for my taste. Yes, we can jump forward years at a time in Caesar's story, but we have two fictional characters (Vorenus and Pullo) whose stories don't seem to have jumped but are progressing pretty much in real time. Very weird continuity for me.

Watched the season finale of EXTRAS last night with Patrick Stewart guest starring. He was really a good sport portraying himself as a kind of dim bulb who only can write scripts where actresses' clothes keep falling off.

Stephen Merchant, who is Ricky Gervais' writing and business partner and who plays his blundering agent on the show, steals every scene he's in.

It's not a SPELL....but Grapefruit Seed Extract (just a drop or two) maybe mixed with a little aloe will help cure that cold sore.

Plain yogurt with live cultures will also stimulate the immune system and help PREVENT cold sores.

And DRJASON you MUST buy a new toothbrush.

And already I've been through 2 toothbrushes. I bought another 3-pack last night.

I used to get these sores all the time when I was a kid. I sometimes had them so badly that they would start on my upper lip and work their way up inside my nostril. I spent a good deal of my youth looking like I had big, crusty boogers on my upper lip. And I think every school picture I had taken from 1st through 11th grade featured a cold sore or two.  Ah, such an attractive lad was I.  ::)

ooh! Save it!! It may become a collectors items worth millions on the ebay market!! (Remember when we used to throw away the mistakes?)

Vixmom (and DR Laura): Granny is apparently on her 9th life right now and feelin' fine. The doctors said by the end of the month, she should be back to 'normal.' She reminds me of the woman on "Grey's Anatomy" yesterday whose...eh...I won't give it away.  Suffice it to say, some people just aren't ready to give up the good fight... :)

Speaking of candles and healing -

Jack: Have you ever tried the ear candles that suck all the crap out of your ears? They're AMAZING. When we lived in Louisville,  you could buy them in packs of 20, I think, and they were pretty inexpensive. Here in NYC, you can have the treatment done at a local manicurist for a mere $60/session (!!!!).

Coins and stamps gain value.  Video boxes and labels...I think...will just be corrected on future releases.

I've found no market for some strange things I've acquired, including the soundtrack LP for "The Sand Pebbles."  I bought a mono copy, but side one is mono and side 2 is stereo.  Go figure.

Well, who would have thought, but, the two interviews today actually turned into three - I got through the first interview with Bonnie at Borders (love the alliteration) and she asked me to stay an extra hour so that Terri could also interview me.  Now, all that is left is for Stephanie to go through my references (and Steph is the one who called me for the interview) and by November 18, I'll know whether or not I am officially a Borders' employee.

many thanks for the thoughts, prayers and vibes. . . many, many thanks indeed!

Why does it have to be cold to have chili?

I have never tried it on/with spaghetti. That sounds interesting!

The end result is the same...why not just ask the cook to serve up a glass of the grease and have it injected directly into the arteries?  Top it off with the grilled cheese sammich.

That's the fastest way to obesity and clogged arteries I know of, short of consuming plates and plates of fudge.

I want you folks to have HEALTHY LIVES....make sure you're eating mostly veggies in between these splurges with comfort foods.

I believe the choice was spaghetti mixed into the chili along with a grilled cheese sammitch. This had followed the notion of chicken soup with a peanut butter sandwich for dunking.

I thought it might be simpler just to have the grease IV'ed directly into the blood stream.  Saves time, obstructs the arteries more efficiently and faster, and may be less caloric.

You may blame it on my feeling a bit bloated today from all the food suggestions.

I thought it might be simpler just to have the grease IV'ed directly into the blood stream.  Saves time, obstructs the arteries more efficiently and faster, and may be less caloric.

Well...

By injecting the grease into your veins, you would end up not "taking advantage" of the protein in the meat and beans (in the chili); the fiber from the beans (in the chili); the protein in the cheese (in the sammitch); the calcium in the cheese (in the sammitch); the protein in the peanut butter (sammitch); the good oils in the peanut butter (sammitch); the general curative nature of chicken soup...

But, most importantly, you would deprive yourself of the physical and psychological pleasure of eating and dunking.

*And just remember, that most traditional recipes for the most common dim sum call for pork fat, although, some places end up using hydrogenated vegetable shortening.  And don't forget the high fructose corn syrup used to sweeten most commercially available duck and sweet and sour sauces.

LOL.....so we are in agreement on keeping open cans OUT of the fridge.  Whew!  My mind is now at ease.

Oh...DtM - I did watch the Boston Pops Opera special....some of which wasn't so...but some of which WAS!  Interesting.  The comments on the difference in orchestrations for stage and ORCHESTRA were enlightening.

Do you just orchestrate for MORE clarinets and violins - or for different instruments than is usually in a pit.  And I wonder who on the HHW board might know the answer to that question?

TOD:

Whenever I hear the words "boy group" I tend to think of cheesy, bubblegum music, so nothing is immediately coming to mind.  I kind of confuzed by some of the choices people are making--a lot of these bands are out of the age range I would consider as boys.  What's the criteria for a boy group?

Well, who would have thought, but, the two interviews today actually turned into three - I got through the first interview with Bonnie at Borders (love the alliteration) and she asked me to stay an extra hour so that Terri could also interview me.  Now, all that is left is for Stephanie to go through my references (and Steph is the one who called me for the interview) and by November 18, I'll know whether or not I am officially a Borders' employee.

many thanks for the thoughts, prayers and vibes. . . many, many thanks indeed!

So which Borders?

Canadian/US or US/Mexican?

And to think, I actually have met both of you!

Odds bodkins!

Well, I had God right but I was incorrect about "little body"; here's what I learned:

A bodkin was originally a small, slender dagger usually hidden amidstthe layers of clothing worn during the Elizabethan period. The word "bod" is speculated to be of Celtic origin; probably from the archaic Welsh "bidog"...dagger. The "kin" in bodkin is most likely the diminutive form. Ods bodkins was used as a mild expletive and can be heard sprinkled liberaly throughout the works of Shakespear; most notably by my favorite character Sir John Falstaff. Ods bodkins refers to God's little dagger with which He pricked the unwary.

So, what's the orchestration question?

I made a conscious decision to move 40 miles away from my family's home once I had saved enough money to be able to rent an apartment, buy furniture, and not have to eat soap three meals a day. I loved my family, but it was very important for me to have privacy, and in the town where they lived (and where I lived with them after college while working on my master's degree), I would have had NO privacy at all.

Oh Lord, Matt, I hope you meant soup.

Back from a very problematic session.  Caught up with all the posts, and must now go to a reading of a musical, which better NOT be too long or I will leave at intermission.

Haven't eaten a thing yet today and hope I can last till the show is over.

The session ran very smoothly in terms of the band and the mics and the way the sound went down, but the engineer could not get a decent blend up while we were recording, and it was VERY frustrating.  And then, even in the mix, it took forever to just get what I deemed an acceptable mix to use, and only acceptable because we were putting a scratch loop over the track and making it sound like an old LP.

So, we gave that all to the sound man for the show, but tomorrow I'm going to Vinnie's and we're going to remix it and redo everything - Vinnie will have this sounding like it should in about thirty minutes, then I'll come over and tweak it, then the conductor and orchestrator will come over to hear it and be happy, then we'll give the sound man a whole new session with all the new mixes and stuff.

I avoided pizza and cereal for din-din....a quick look in the refrigerator showed I had the fixin's for a tasty omelette...sharp cheddar, green peppers, onion and ham...and eggs that would be wasted if I didn't cook 'em.

Where will NBC be expecting its "Medium" audience to find 3-D glasses?

They're going to be issued in TV GUIDE. I'm sure they'll have them in other places, too.

I saved all my 3-D glasses from the last big wave of 3-D movies in the early 1980s (the polarized kind), and I also have the red and blue kind that were used when they started showing things like GORILLA AT LARGE on TV.

And surely you saved your 3-D glasses that came with the SPY KIDS 3 DVD package.

Tonight, I watched RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY. It's an enjoyable western. There are others I like more, but it was certainly entertaining with no dull moments.

And that print that TCM broadcast! Wow! Beautifully sharp and clear. This must be the master used for the DVD because it was gorgeous with almost no damage at all. I noticed one brown tear about 30 minutes or so into it, but otherwise, it seemed spotless.

I'm just in from a thrilling evening at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Lea Salonga was, in a word, angelic. She hasn't seemed to age since she did MISS SAIGON 14 years ago (yes, it really was 14 years ago) and she's even 4 months pregnant!

Ms. Salonga did an almost 3-hour show. Some of the highlights:

* Lea and guest Liz Calloway singing "I Still Believe" for the first time since Lea left the original B'way company of MISS SAIGON.

* Lea singing the Act One Finale ("I'd Give My Life For You") in a single amber spot of light.

* Ms. Liz Calloway singing "Meadowlark" and "The Story Goes On," which she sang as a duet with Ms. Salonga.

* Ms. Andrea McArdle and Ms. Salonga dueting "Tomorrow."

* Ms. Salonga bringing up an audience member to sing "A Whole New World" with her for her grand finale.

* "On My Own." Bar none the best performance of it I've ever heard. And I've heard A LOT of "On My Owns."

* Ms. Salonga cleverly working in an audition for WICKED, singing "Popular."

The only lowlight:

*Ms. Salonga cleverly working in an audition for WICKED, singing "Defying Gravity." Yes, she sang it.

And since everyone else had their cameras out...

OUT OF PRACTICE did make me laugh. I LOVE Ty Burrell. His dry wit and delivery is very funny to me, and the show had two plots going that were both amusing.

There was the mistaken gay-identity plot that the show has already used once this season (and that co-producers Joe Keenan and Christopher Lloyd used on several occasions when they were running FRASIER), but it still was funny despite its familiarity.

It's still my favorite new comedy of this season.

MBarnum, when I did PSYCHO III, Mike Henry was the location manager.  One day I brought in an artcile I had on him in one of my Burroughs fanzines to show him and tried to get him to talk about Sy Weintraub, with whom I did my Sherlock Holmes films with...He could have cared less.  I gather it was not a fun time for him.  Still you'd think it would be better than being a location manager...

Good Morning!

The chart is done.  Whew!  It actually turned out to be easier than I thought it would be due to some repeated sections - the joys of "cut and paste".  :)  And since I made good time, I went ahead and did some "detail" work on the layout - spacing, font sizes, etc.

However, I had a bit of scare when I went to print it out - which is part of the reason why I'm still up and posting this so late/early.  I was getting some sort of printer driver conflict, and the program kept crashing as soon as I would open the file.  And then once I got it open, nothing would appear on the screen.  Thankfully, I found a "fix", and I was able to make the music reappear on the screen.  However, the text boxes with the tempos, measure numbers, etc., seemed to have disappeared.  Well, after about ten minutes of putting those back in, everything seems to be working fine now.

-And I've saved the file under a few different fille names as well as backed it up to my memory stick, my online storage, and my other computer.  And I've printed out two copies of it.  Maybe I'll go for a third.

In any case...  It's done.  For now.

At least since I'm in DC, I can come back on Mondays - and you can come down to see the show here too.

But it has been great getting to spend more time with you, and getting to know you better.  -And introducing you to Becco!  ;)

I'll be back soon.

:)

Hmm.... And who knows how many relatives I would have run into at Lea's concert had I been able to go tonight.

;)

-Sorry - That's a really "in" Filipino joke.

And it's 3:05am according to my computer's clock, and I'm still able to post to "today"...

Hmm...

Well, let me close up shop here on this computer - believe it or not, I'm currently on three computers right now - two laptops and one dekstop.  Time to begin Shutting Down for the evening...
