Title: SO FAR, SO GOOD
Post by: bk on November 08, 2005, 12:08:47 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've said so far, so good, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're so far, and that's so good.

Good Morning!

Well... Down to one computer now, my laptop.  Whew!

Thankfully, the first rehearsal for Damn Yankees does not start until 11:30, so I'll still be able to get a nice chunk of sleep in over the next couple of hours.  -Actually, there's coffee and bagels at 11:30; the actually meet and greet will not start until Noon.  *Plus, the day will be ending at 5:00, so, if needed, I can catch up my winks later tonight/tomorrow/??...  In any case...

I'm still up...

BK - Hmmm... Knowing how your orchestrator can get when he's frustrated...  I can only imagine what would have happened if he had stayed around.  -And I bet he had some choice words as it was.  I hope everything turns out fine once Vinnie gets his hands and ears on the project.

*And I had forgotten that Alet was expecting - I can't remember who I first heard the news from - maybe it was you.  In any case, please pass on my greetings and congratulations to her and Andy.

As for the Topic of the Day...

That's a lot to think about.  A lot.

Overall, if there was some way for everyone involved to stop making decisions based on the possible profits - money - then that would provide opportunities for all sorts of movies, plays and musicals to get on their feet in front of an audience.  In other words, the whole business aspect of a project should be the LAST thing discussed, not the first nor the second or even the third.  Inspiration, creativity and education should be at the forefront.

And maybe like the sports leagues do now... A salary cap - ???

And the word of the day is: PORTENTOUS!

Nothing portentous or polite!

I have heard so many people perform this song and very few get this word correct.  Most sing "pretentious" and several have sung "portentious," a combination of the two. :P GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE!!  Zero never sung it incorrectly!  For once, listen to the CD (reissued by our very own BK) or the album or watch the movie.

And that is the end of my Tuesday morning rant. ;)

Goodnight.

Let's see...it's 12:36 PST, I still have some laundry to do (socks and underwear that must[/i] be done now ;)), I have to fill in my absentee ballot (we don't have a choice for this one...everyone has to vote by absentee ballot) AND I have to get to sleep after I take out my contact lenses.  So, I'm going to Wussburger now.  Goodnight, all.

Well, in truth, it wasn't MY orchestrator.  It was my first experience in the studio with this particular orchestrator - a very nice fellow, but not one I normally would want in the room if I was working with Vinnie.  Too nitpicky too quick - I don't blame him in the least for his frustration, though, and we spoke on the phone afterwards and he was fine.  I have two ways to go when this sort of thing happens on really rare occasions:  In NY, it happened on one of the first albums we did, and I stopped the session, threw the engineer out of the room, and brought in another engineer.  That, however, was a rhythm date and wasn't on the clock, as it were.  I did think about calling Vinnie and telling him to come over, but that would have presented itself with a whole slew of other problems.  So, I bit my tongue, and just got through the session and mix as best I could without letting tempers flare.  I think that was the best way to handle it.

Good morning, all!  Hurray!  Tom Murray is back in town and we are back to Toyland!  Hopefully, within the next two months, we will send the new editions of vocal and orchestra scores to the printer and wend our way to THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER or p'raps some Jerome Kern.

I picked up a bit of my work for tenor Mario Frangoulis, who's better than Josh Groban I think, and I have a lot of work for the next week or so.

DRCharlesPogue, I also love the song "There's a lull in my life."

DRJason, how did "Meadowlark" sound live?  It's my orchestration. and I've only heard it in bits and pieces in the studio and the final mix on Liz' "On and Off Broadway" recording.  I've always wanted to hear it live in a real acoustic situation.

Congratulations to DR Joy on a successful casting day yesterday!

The first thing: I would do is refuse to pay actors their ridiculous acting fees, perks etc. Then the flm can be made for reasonable amount and make back their costs.

Second thing: Make "smaller" films for other age demographics.

Third thing: Cast the original actors from the plays or musicals. If they were good enough on stage then they should be good enough on film.

Fourth Thing: No fancy editing techniques or cinematography tricks (speed ups, jump editings) These are tiresome and really don't add anything to the film except some that the director is better at technique over content.

Fifth Thing: Music. No songs by the flavour sing or group of the day because who will remember them 10 or 20 years from. Just a reasonable good music score.  Like perhaps John Williams.

Sixth Thing: Balance film releases of the G, PG, PG-13 and R rated films.

and I am sure there are more.

While I agree with a lot of what DRMichaelShayne says, I don't agree about casting the original stage performers in the film adaptation:  I've seen several stage actors who are unable to tone down a performance onscreen:  the LAW & ORDER franchise uses many of them, and I prefer Rita Moreno in a closeup to Chita Rivera any day!

I think the problem with Chita is that she's done basically nothing in her long career as far as screen work is concerned.  She never picked up any chops.

Of course, this involves a discussion of what a "sex scene" is, exactly.  Do you mean a romantic scene between a woman and a man (or a hypothetical other combination), or do you mean the full boinky captured on film?

If I ran a studio, I would make sure that each script was literate, fully realized and the vision of one sole screenwriter (or a strongly aligned team of two)  before it ever went into production.  I would employ writers who understood that a good screenplay was more than a bunch of pages of dialogue with some plot twists.  I would want writers who understood the use of language and the development of characters along with the ability to tell imaginative stories.  I would free the writers of such focus group crap such as always having an upbeat ending.  That's what I would do.

Hi all.  Last night I volunteered at the annual benefit for a Only Make Believe, a most fabulous organization that brings interactive theater to children in hospitals and out patient treatment.  While there I got to talk to Haley Mills (directed her to the ladies room), Dena Hammerstein, Linda Eder (sold her raffle tickets) and as a bonus, Josh Lucas smiled at me (good lord is he easy on the eyes).

It was a lot of fun and I felt like I was personally able to raise a lot of money for the organization.  During the reception, my job was to work my way around the room with a cigarette girl type tray and a feather boa and sell raffle tickets.  My powers of persuation were at their peak and I made about $1500!

I would have the writers develop scripts with characters over 50 years of age.

I would employ all of my old time favorite actors and actresses! June Kenney would be forced out of retirement.

Cillaliz - Re one of your posts yesterday, it seems interesting that about a dozen people have told me lately that they've seen the LAST STARFIGHTER movie on cable in the past couple of weeks, and it seems on different stations.   Maybe it's just on the minds of our friends since the CD of the musical is out, but in a strange moment, it was fun to think that the movie might be showing more often because of the CD and all the google references to  the title (especially when combined with "kritzerland") that popped up since the CD was announced.  Doubtful, but in a self-absorbed moment, it was fun to think that. :)

'Mornin'!

Ahh...Mario Frangoulis. What a nice way to start the day.

DR Cillaliz - Congrats!!

Is it any surprise that I don't want to be at work today? Well, I don't. And there you have it.

TOD: The artist within would like to say that as a producer of B'way shows, I'd ban jukebox musicals altogether. Sure, they're fun, but where's the craft? Where's the skill?

As a producer, however, the logical, profit-turning businessman within would realize that Broaway is a commercial venue and a profit is always expected, if rarely achieved. Knowing that, I'd be hardpressed to ban shows that so obviously attract an audience and turn a profit. MAMMA MIA! continues to do outrageous business and I suspect that JERSEY BOYS will, as well - at least for a year or two.

In the same vein, I'd like to limit the number of TV and movie actors who 'slum it' for the summer to do a revival of this or that. We need more home-grown Broadway stars, but how can you nurture the up-and-coming Gwen Verdons when everyone wants to hire the already - if questionably so - established Christina Applegates? The legacy of the Broadway divas and leading men are giving way to the Marissa Tomeis and Huey Lewises...the Wayne Bradys and Melanie Griffiths. Where are the Mermans? Where are the Raitts?

On the other hand, the Melanie Griffiths and Huey Lewises sell tickets and keep shows running. The Marissa Tomeis and Christina Applegates actually ensure that a show opens at all. From a business standpoint, it's a no-brainer, even if a few of them are no-talent. That's not entirely fair - most of them have some talent...otherwise they wouldn't be bankable stars. But just being a TV or movie star or fallen pop idol does not a Broadway star make. I have great respect for someone like Brooke Shields who has worked to prove herself in the theatre community. She continues to push her limits and step into roles that are quite atypical for her personality.

As much as it pains me to say it, she'd never have had those opportunities without the aid of Barry and Fran. The Weisslers, that is. But I also blame them for Melanie Griffith and Sally Struthers and Lucy Lawless and Jon Secada. But, it's a business and they know what sells...

Jason - Are you really lumping Marisa Tomei in that category?  Having seen Tomei work her magic both on and off Broadway in recent years, I think she's more than proven herself.  Maybe not in musicals, but in plays, definitely, and she's shown a real commitment to coming back again and again.  (Granted, I didn't see WAIT UNTIL DARK, where she apparently was not as good.)

I like Marisa Tomei.  She didn't have a chance in Wait Until Dark, as her director completely failed the play and everyone in the cast - tarting it up with loud sound effects, movie-music cues, and Quentin Tarantino, who gave one of the most embarrassing performances I've ever seen on a stage, and that includes middle school shows.

OK...I take back the Marissa Tomei thing - I've never seen her in a show (she's only done two on Broadway and I'm not at all familiar with her off-Broadway history), so I can't really judge. But I stand by Melanie Griffith wholeheartedly. And Lucy Lawless, too.

That strikes a thought in my mind for an answer to the topic of the day.  Tomei starred in a play called DEMONOLOGY at Playwrights Horizons that, if there were any theatrical justice, would have moved on to great success.  If I had the ability to do so, I'd put Marisa Tomei in DEMONOLOGY on the list of shows that I'd try to get on track for a commercial run, both from a  financial and artistic perspective.

But it was time to consider the rest of my life, I had frequent headaches, and the cost was ridiculously high...I was spending more on cigarettes than I was on food.

All these announcements on the net  of first-day takes for SWEENEY and JERSEY BOYS remind me of something I've been wondering about.  Is there any truth to the rumor that when Broadway shows announce how much their first-day box office take was on the day after opening, they're including all the group sales that have accumulated prior to that date in that figure, since they're not officially accrued until the show actually opens?

What really tightens my jaws is anytime someone implies she did not earn the Supporting Actress Oscar for "My Cousin Vinny."  She was flat-out brilliant in the film and she was far more worthy than many actresses who have copped nominations and Oscars.

Well I would look around and see what properties the studio owns that hadn't been made.  And I would get some GOOD writers who know what they're doing.  THOSE are the people who would get the BIG salaries.

I would also keep any "actor" away from the script.  I will never understand the process by which a body with a voice suddenly fancies itself a mind....LOL.

TV - throw away the A story B story formula for comedies - reduce the number of regular people in the cast - no more fantasy shows and NO MORE reality shows.

I think I've been dupped by a seller on Amazon.com Marketplace. The order was placed nearly four weeks ago and it's still not here. I've tried emailing the seller twice and have heard nada. And now there are 2 instances of negative feedback in the seller's profile claiming that s/he is a fraud. I think I won't be getting my Hitchcock DVDs after all. :(

Tomei is a fine actress. Sometimes you luck into one of those parts that just fits your talents like a glove, and MY COUSIN VINNY certainly did that for her. But she's shown that she's more than a one trick pony since then. I have never seen her on the stage, but I've liked most of her screen performances that I've seen.

I saw MEDIUM last night and it was another good episode.  Alison's husband gets called for jury duty and they are not supposed to talk about the case.

I am wondering what to do about the 3D episode since I don't have 3D glasses! :(

Re: LOST, there is a full page diagram in our local paper listing all the characters on the show and what their odds are of being killed. :)
(i'm serious).

Only problem is it seems a loon wrote the article (it's not based on any spoilers). And it has Jack (Matthew Fox) as even money to leave. How ridiculous is that.

One thing mentioned in the article that I found interesting is that they said "the writers know who the audience really likes and so they know who they can't get rid of".

I think that is true. There are a few: Shannon, Michael, Walt, that I definitely like less.  And there are a few (Kate, Sun, Jack) that I really like more and would be very sad if they left the show.

BK - I have the full score. We license the show!

According to Amazon.com, I have to wait until tomorrow to officially claim fraud and request a refund. They have an "A-Z Guarantee" for just this sort of situation which guarantees that I will be reimbursed provided I've followed all the rules, which I believe I have. Still, I'd rather have the DVDs than the refund. Oh, well. When I get the money back, I'll just walk over to Tower and buy the set in person. It's easier that way.

I read this amongst the list of requirements for US citizenship

"Language

Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. "

You MUST be a US citizen to vot e in a US election... or even just the local school budget

So WHY oh WHY did I go to my polling center this morning to see

"Vote Aqui"  signs plastered all over and only ONE lonely "Vote Here" sign?   Why did I receive in the mail a voter's registration card that was entirely in Spanish on one side and English on the reverse?

I am becoming increasingly infuriated with seeing this country bend over backwards to accomodate one set of immigrants over all the other groups which have and are entering this country.  Why not Korean? Or Vietnamese? or Farsi? or Hindi? Italian? German? Hungarian? Russian? Hebrew? Egyptian? the list goes on and on.....

I believe that this "enabling behavior" only marginalizes the people in that community both by keeping them  "out of the mainstream" (as it is much  easier to stay where the language comes easy)  and secondly by angering the general populace who themselves had to learn the English language when they came here or are the children of those who did

Surely I am not the only one to whom this seems to be a problem... or am I?

DR Vixmom:  Politicians (i.e. Congress) see Mexican-Americans as the single most lucrative voting bloc out there and what you see in the polling places reflects their bid to woo the voter whose first language is Spanish.

I am with you, however.  To be a citizen of this country, you should be able to read, write and converse in English.

I also believe citizenship should be required of all parents whose children use our schools and for anyone/everyone on the public dole.

Call me non-PC, but call me a patriot!

Dan (the man) hit on the major thing that is wrong with movies...the lowly status of the writer.  When his vision is constantly perverted and pissed on, when he is thrown off the picture, and anywhere from two to twelve other writers can be thrown at the movie to fix it, when his voice is not equal to or more important than the director's, the star's, the producer's, or the studio head's will continue to get hodge-podge, thrown together flotsam with no distinct vision.  The vision of a film comes from the screenplay.  Writers write screenplays.  If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage.  I've seen plenty of great screenplays ruined by bad directors, bad actors, bad producers, and studio executives.  I've yet to see a great film made from a bad script.

The next improvement would be to sweep out the twelve-year-old boy mentality that is entrenched in the studio ranks.  It would go a long way to eliminating mindless testosterone carnival thrill ride movies and this penchant for re-making bad sixties and seventies TV shows into features.

Here's some of the stuff that is seriously being developed right now in Hollywood (that doesn't necessarily mean that it will ever see the light of day).  How much of this would you pay good money to see:

TV:  Green Acres; The Jeffersons; Swat 2 (Did Swat 1 make money?); The Monkees; Sherman & Peabody; It Takes A Thief; Magnum P.I.; Hawaii Five-O; The Iron Chef; The Equalizer; Streets of San Francisco

Re-makes or sequels (Some of these movies are barely 20 years old, if that):

Bunny Lake is Missing; Cooley High; House of Flying Daggers; Halloween: The Retribution; Children of the Corn; Fantastic Voyage; Star Chamber; Angel Heart; Gumball Rally The Hot Rock; Robocop; Kind Hearts & Coronets; Bell, Book & Candle; Toy Story 4;

Today is voting day in California...a useless, expensive ego trip of the so-called "Governor" to pass a bunch of initiatives that are unnecessary and only serve to give him more power than he has been able to grab.

Polls show all the initiatives pretty much failing, from close to rout.  But low turnout could cause some upsets, depending on how well Arnold did in his campaigning over the past week.

I hope they all fail miserably.  If they do, his political future may also be finished.

SPOILER:

"Medium" -- I watched last night's episode after having nodded off several times during the previous hour watching a PBS show on a megaflood in the Missoula Basin.

The opening was a stunner, and I was right there with Allison as she screamed herself awake!  I thought the show was pretty good, although it didn't go in the direction I thought it would.  I was very pleased it involved Joe more...and in clothing, albeit a loud Hawaiian shirt.   I cannot honesly say it held my attention the full hour because I was up and about doing various things preparatory for bedtime.

I'd get up during a commercial and not turn my attention immediately to the show once it returned, so I missed visuals, although I heard it all.

Okay I must admit I am married to a non citizen so half the time the Vixter would have to stay out of school if citizen ship was required to attend   ;D

HOWEVER he is a LEGAL RESIDENT ALIEN which unfortunately a good portion of the populace on Long Island cannot claim.  >:(

As the spouse of a legal resident alien I will admit to be predujiced in favor of allowing them to attend our schools, receive our benefits as they are also generally working tax payers who do not enjoy the privilege of voting

HOWEVER as far as allowing ILLEGAL aliens to have drivers licenses, attend outr schools, receive benfits etc etc etc etc

I am right there with you Ron!!

JRand55, don't get rid of ALL the reality shows...I need something to watch on TV!

I don't mind remakes or movie versions of TV shows...as long as they are done well. The Brady Bunch movie was wonderful fun...the Bewitched movie was horrible.

I am hoping that the King Kong remake will be enjoyable....but even if it is bad, some good will come of it...they are releasing every King Kong movie under the sun on DVD to coincide with the new movie and that alone makes me very happy!

Children born inside the U.S., whether the parents or citizens or not, are U.S. citizens and entitled to full school, other benefits.

Legal Resident Aliens are not who I am talking of, or U.S. citizens married to non-citizens who reside here.

My concerns are those who cross the borders illegally with their families and then get full benefits of welfare, plus schools and driver's licenses, etc.  They do not have the benefit of formalized training in citizenship and they do not embrace the U.S., necessarily, as home.

Re TOD I would have to agree with DR Laura

The language thing is unnecessary  we do not need to hear F*** every few seconds or S*** or any thing else.  Movies got along fine without bad language for years and years and I don't think that language is necessary for us to figure out that the guy killing everyone with a machine gun is a bad man.. that's what acting is supposed to do fopr us.  I think throwing that language around is more than anything else a sign of a badly written show.

Can anyone remember any vulgarity in the LOTR trilogy?  Vixdad and I were talking about that the other night, and all those battles -  but there were no bucketfuls of blood  and guts needed to get the point across that thousands were dying !

As for sex scenes, I must admit there have been a few bottoms that crossed the big screen that got my pulse racing... but really in the long run less is more.... I think seeing a couple starting to disrobe and sinking below the "eye level" of the camera can be much more sexy in the long run....

My concerns are those who cross the borders illegally with their families and then get full benefits of welfare, plus schools and driver's licenses, etc.  They do not have the benefit of formalized training in citizenship and they do not embrace the U.S., necessarily, as home.

Warning  RANT ahead!!!

EXACTLY!!  We have  been having a big brouhaha out here recently because the  local Township evicted over 40 illegal immigrants who were living in a three bedroom, single family residence that was clearly in violation of local building codes. (The owner, BTW, had received several summones, warnings, notice of evictions etc over the past 18 months... but the $300 + a month she was getting from each tenant  was more enticing than the idea of playing by the rules).

The next week a couple of more similar houses were treated the same way in the same area... and neighbors and supporters of the Township's actions have stated that they can point to at least another 30 houses that have not yet been closed down.

The illegals and supporters of  "undocumented workers" had the nerve to protest (literally!  They picketed the County Executitive Building)  that  the evicted men should be compensated and free housing should be provided to them and they set up a tent city in a local park!

Where is INS in all of this?  Oh wait... they are using their considerable resources to dispatch a young man who came here with his parents (l1 legal resident alien , 1 citizen) when he was 12, grew up on Long Island,  attended the schools here,  joined the US ARMY, served honorably for 5 years, was honorably discharged... his crime?  After he was discharged form the Army, which happened while he was stationed in Germany, he spent too long out of the country (18 months) while working in a civilian support post  FOR THE US ARMY... which he only did because his son, who was born with a serious heart condition, was receiving a series of heart  operations and could not be moved back here to "home" without danger....when he came back he immediately applied to continue his resident alien status (which had only just lapsed) while awaiting citizenship and has been denied for being  "too long abroad"

This is literally blocks away from where a tent city of more than 100 self declared "undocumented workers" are living... untroubled by so much as a glance from the INS!

 >:( >:( >:(

Okay I'll get off my soapbox for a while now....

end of rant

for now..... :D

Define untoward position?  Well, let's say you are in a book shop, and a book you want to see is on a lower shelf.  You squat down, pull the book and, while squatting (or hunkering), you stir up some dust and sneeze.  You can throw out your back by being in that position and sneezing.  I've seen it happen.

Well maybe the original Allison was ..... ya never knows...

It's a pretty name.

Maybe all Debras are named after Debra Paget.  All Alices after Alice in Wonderland.

But maybe not, too.

:D

SADLY, for me, "Ronald" was a popular name after WWII, and primarily, I don't know why, my mother said she always loved "Ronald Reagan's" name.

My mother wanted to name me "George Lee" initially (!!!!) and my maternal grandfather was hurt I wasn't named after him (Lester Lee).  I'm steamed I wasn't named after my paternal grandfather (none of my cousins were, either)...his name was Benjamin.

I'd have LOVED being named Benjamin.

My mom originally wanted to name me George Dougherty, Jr. (my dad doesn't have a middle name), but my dad was in the army and was stationed in Alabama when I was born.  He said that he knew way too many 40-year-olds named "Junior" to let that happen to me.  But then he also (jokingly?) said that he wanted to name me "Stanislaus."  What kind of a life would I have had as a Stan??  Anyway, they settled on George Patrick Dougherty.

The weirdest thing happened.  I'm reading this book called Something Blue (by Emily Giffin).  It's summer 2005 so I knew I hadn't read it before. But it seemed so familiar and it was driving me crazy.  Anyhow I just looked up her first book (Something Borrowed) and it says that the 2nd book (the one I'm reading now) is the same story but told from another character's point of view.

Now why on earth does it not say anything about that on the book jacket?!?!  I thought I was going crazy.  But in one of the first chapters we have our narrator (Darcy) walking in on her fiancee and her best friend (he was hiding in the closet).  But in book 1 the narrator was the best friend!  I actually wish that I hadn't read the first book so long ago!

This is not really a spoiler but just something my sis mentioned re: Shannon.  A few weeks ago the actor Naveen (who plays Sayid) mentioned that he and Shannon will be having a love scene.  Since I don't think that has happened yet, if it does not happen by the middle of tomorrow's show, then Shannon probably won't be dying!

Btw, if you're gonna make banana muffins using a banana cake recipe, make sure that you realize that muffins only take 25 minutes, while cake takes 50 minutes to bake. :(

Well luckily i noticed I was using a banana cake recipe like 2 minutes before I put the muffins in the oven.

Oh and I am the worst for checking if they are ready.  I put the toothpick and there was no batter (this was at 20 minutes). I put the toothpick in like 5 muffins, no batter. But I know they almost always take another 5 minutes. So i cut into the one i was going to eat, and it was a touch gooey at the top. Lucky! I don't want to give anyone gooey muffins!

I wonder if they are doubling up TAR episodes just to get through this run that much quicker since they realize that ratings are off.  I don't recall other races having a two hour episode other than the finales.

I was going to say to DR Jrand that he will eventually have to put up with more of the Gaghans when TAR does it's clip show, but they usually broadcasted that at the midpoint of the race.  After tonight there may be only three to four teams left, so I doubt that there will be a clip show at this point.

So I've had this midly annoying cold all weekend.  Not too much stuffiness, mainly a really sore throat.  But I managed to sleep well Sunday night, so I went ahead and did work and Symphony Chorale rehearsal yesterday.  In hindsight, probably not the best of ideas.

I'm prone to ear infections, so when I woke up last night at 3 in the morning with the familiar pressure and pain, I knew what was going on.  Trouble was, I don't yet have a primary doctor in this town, so I had no one to really go to.  Emergency room is always an option, but a damnably expensive one, even with decent insurance.  Finally at about 5:45, the pain makes the decision for me...even if I HAD a doctor, I couldn't wait around for him to be able to see me.  I needed a doctor now.

As earaches go, this was a doozy.  By the time I got to the Emergency room, I couldn't do anything but pace around in circles until they could see me.  By the time I was seen, the pain had me frozen in position.
Nice thing about emergency room visits, they go quickly.  I basically informed the doctor what was wrong with me...he took a look in my ear, nodded his head, and came back a few minutes later with the prescriptions...including one for some heavy duty pain killers.  Bless the people who invented Wallgreens 24 hour pharmacy...by 7:15 I was back in bed, pills taken.

Most of the painful pressure has now subsided, thank goodness.  I'm still hearing like I have a fishbowl over my head, and my throat and head still ache...but at least the antibiotics are doing their thing and I should be better soon.

Please, if you send vibes (and they are welcome) include some for DB Jed.  He had to get up for work at 6:30, and I'm afraid he was up for awhile before then, thanks to my pacing around in the living room.  Poor guy is going to be tired today...

When I was in Jr. High I read a book that was told (in a single volume) in two different perspectives.  It was a love story, and one side was the girl's story and the other side was the guy's story.  You flipped it over to read the other side.   I read the guy's side first and then I read the girl's and thought she was a ninny.

Why, yes, it was BJOT.  And if was still acting it would be a sore subject.  Luckily, I am not, so I don't give a rip anymore.  At the time, however, it was rather an awkward and humiliating time in my life.  Of course, pretty much all of 2005 was like that.  On December 31, I am going to party like it's 1999, and the year 2006 will be greeted with a rapture you will not believe.  FU, 2005.

And you've perfectly illustrated a bizarre fact I discovered this morning.  In an effort to figure out whether I should hit the emergency room or tough it out, I was doing online research on ear aches.  Apparently people over the age of 12 are just not meant to have ear infections.  Every single mention of them I could find was in reference to what you should do when "your child" has an ear infection.  Adults just don't get them.  I even typed in "adult ear infection" just to see what would happen.  I swear my computer gave me a funny look.

I don't know if they're combing episodes or if tonight's AMAZING RACE is an extended one hour version, but the key piece of information is that CLOSE TO HOME is a ratings loser and CBS wants to move it out of direct competition with LAW & ORDER: SVU and BOSTON LEGAL for ratings sweeps.

And they're going to try it on Fridaay at 9 in the THRESHOLD time slot to see if GHOST WHISPERER is a more compatible a lead-in than AMAZING RACE was. THRESHOLD will be shown on Tuesday at 10 next week.

After I finished MEDIUM, I put in THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS. I hadn't seen it in years, and I've had this version of the DVD on my shelf for a couple of years. No, I'm sure it's not as pristine as the new Paramount release of the film, but this version looked very good. There were a couple of places where scratches were present and a couple of little blips on the screen that probably were faulty telecine machine quirks. (I think I paid $4 for this disc used). But the contrast and sharpness were very, very good, much better than I was expecting having read that there were public domain copies of the film out there that were unwatchable. This was very watchable with quite a bit of detail. I think I lucked out with it.

Very enjoyable film which I enjoyed experiencing again after such a long time.

How did you know? I stayed out of everyone's way and sat reading books and playing in the back playroom most of my formative years.

And I tried to keep the squabbling with my older brother to a minimum since he would think nothing of hurting either me or my records, books etc. My LI'L ABNER soundtrack still has a gigantic scratch across its side 2 face done by him for some nefarious reason.

Unless the clip show is one of tonight's shows?

I think I read that they are doubling up tonight because next week is the Country Music Awards.

It seems to me that TAR has done 2 hour episodes before.

And now that the Gaghans are gone, I am afraid I might lose interst. But I will tape it tonight and watch it later in the week.

I want to be a Gaghan!

OMG, DR MBarnum you crack me up!  I still can't believe that was your favorite team.  But I'll bet we'll continue to get to know the remaining teams so you'll probably find somebody new to cheer for.

Jennifer Finnegin won three Emmys on daytime TV, but she has had bad luck with all of her prime time efforts. She never fit in on CROSSING JORDAN either before NBC gave her that sitcom last season (which I did sort of like). And now her CBS drama is floundering.

Surely I am not the only one to whom this seems to be a problem... or am I?

I hear your point but I think it is an issue with many sides. People do have to have a certain amount of English in order to pass a citizenship exam, but I don't know that it requires people to become fluent and so many people who are probably most comfortable in their native language continue to use it.  And I think it brings up different feelings for those who continue to use their native language and those who primarily use english.  I think that something is marginalizing only as long as the person within the experience feels it that way.  Some may interpret the bilingual signage as a comforting and welcoming sign.  Others may see it as condescending.

My two cents.  :)

Sorry but with me you get the social worker perspective.  ;) I actually have a lot of opinions about required citizenship, but I'll keep them mostly to myself.  I do want to say however, that citizenship is required for anyone on the "public dole."  You cannot receive welfare benefits or social services of any kind unless you are a citizen of this country.  Since the welfare reform act of 1996.

More spoilers:

I did get the impression that he had committed a crime and that the family was protecting him/covering for him.  I also got the impression from comments to the effect of, he didn't know any better, that he might be mentally retarded or have some other kind of developmental disorder that helped to create the situation he was running from- and that that is why they had to keep him locked up.

Those were my thoughts.

Good Evening!

What show am I working on this week?

;)

What a wonderful first day of rehearsal for Damn Yankees.  The day started off with a sort of social hour before we all settled into the theatre for the official welcomes, introductions and designer presentations.  Arena invites the members of their Board of Directors and some of their more "prosperous" donors to the first day of rehearsal for their shows throughout the season.  And we had a very full house today.

And we had some special guests today too.  There were three gentlemen from the DC Baseball Historical Society, as well as one of the only Washington Senators to have a batting average above .300!   They were brought in by the dramaturgy department to help provide some actual history.  Again, very cool!  Oh!  And we'll be having an actual former baseball announcer taping the announcements for the show too!

....And then we all headed over to the rehearsal hall for the read-thru and some more detailed info on the set and costume designs.   And then we were done.  A very nice - and short - first day.

*And, tomorrow, I'm only called from 4:30-6:00.  Nice! :)

Yesterday was very frustrating thanks to the early snowfall.  As beautiful as it is we weren’t ready for it.  Keith spent the morning, with the rest of the crowds, getting studded tires on his car so I could drive to my afternoon doctor’s appointment.  Then he spent the rest of the day shoveling the driveway so it would be spotless this morning for the truck to come deliver our cabinets.  Finally, way after it was dark, Keith walked in the house just as our power went out.

I spent a good part of the day on the phone dealing with other assorted things that went wrong around here.

The power returned in time to record MEDIUM.

Today was a better day, the sun was shining and the cabinets have been delivered, well all but the missing two items.  And the vegetables didn’t freeze in the refrigerator.

And it turns out our costume designer, the amazing (and Tony winning) Martin Pakledinaz, is also working on the upcoming Broadway revival of The Pajama Game.  -He's working on both Adler and Ross shows back to back.

LOL.  You would think something that important would be on the book cover.  At least the story is a rip-off of one of her own novels.

Just saw that actress Jean Carson passed away at age 82.

JRand55 will remember her as the deep voiced best friend of the tormented Gloria Talbott in I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE...others might recall her from her appearances on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW as the raspy voiced "fun girl" Daphne on 3 episodes.

I met her at a couple of the Ray Courts Shows...she was very sweet...her voice was even more raspy as she puffed away on many a cigarette outside the convention center!

Oddly enough I just saw her on an episode of LOCK UP last night.

DR Joy - My pic falls under the category of "Things To Do During Long Book Scenes".  ;-)

More precisely, during Camelot.  The pit at Arena Stage is totally under the stage, so we're not seen at all by the audience.  So...  After turning off the flash, setting the shutter for a long exposure, and setting the self-timer... Voila!

I actually just ordered some prints of the photo in various sizes and croppings.  I think I'm gonna use it as one of my press/promo pics.

And before I forget...

The true highlight day was seeing our stage manager, Sue, again.  She was our SM for South Pacific and she was supposed to be our SM for Camelot, but due to a bout with cancer she had to bow out of that production.  Thankfully, she's in very good health right now, and it's been five months since her last chemo session.  Her hair has grown back, including her eyebrows!  -And she'll be with us for Damn Yankees.

But through it all, her spirit and sense of humor never waivered.  And her hugs feel even stronger and more welcoming than ever.

:)

And the whole "family" is back together again - director, assistant director, choreographer, assistant choreographer, music director, assistant music director and stage manager.

I just realized I have a bunch of catching up to do from yesterday!  I'll start with DR SWW:

You can't let fear of failing be the reason you don't try something.  I've been wanting to be a casting director, but I have been telling myself to take it slow, I'm not ready to do it by myself yet.  And I never wanted to try to do anything about my weight because I was so worried that I wouldn't make it, that I would screw it up.  So I held myself back, made all kinds of excuses.  But then I just decided to go for it, to put myself out there... and it didn't happen overnight, I just started to slowly convince myself to take it one day at a time and to take control of my life, to start acting like a success.  To make small choices and change attitudes.

I'm a long way from the finish line, but I feel more in charge of my life than I have in a long, long time... maybe ever.  So the moral of the story, SWW, is this:  Stop looking for reasons why you can't teach that cooking class.  Turn "I can't, I won't, I didn't" into "I can, I will, I did".  WE all know you can do it, professional CHEFS know you can do it; the only one who remains unconvinced is you.

And now, I step down from the podium.  Thank you.

;) :)

DR Dan - ITA (I Totally Agree, in Internet lingo) with you about Botox.  It is really getting freaky.  That woman, what's her name, who hosted "So You Think You Can Dance"?  She doesn't even look HUMAN.  I couldn't stand to watch her.  And it's not just TV personalities; it's "real", live women all around us!  What do they see when they look in the mirror in the first place that makes them do these awful things to their faces?  And what do they see afterwards that makes them think this looks okay?  It looks disgusting!  It is so obvious and horrible!  *shudder*

Since there is no evidence to say you are wrong, I say believe it!!!

George, don't THINK you're getting out of the Avatar game.

I know, I know. ;)

Long story:

Here in Olympia, a local semi-professional theater group, Harlequin Productions (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/), puts on a Christmas show every year that they write.  They're scripted (not revues), set in New York City in the 1940s, at the fictional Stardust Club.  Each show title has the word Stardust in it:  "Stardust Memories," "Operation Stardust," "A Stardust Christmas 1944," etc., etc., etc.,  Anyway, I'd been in several of their earlier shows as the bartender, Stanley Gallagher, and in this particular year (I forget the specific title), the club is being taken over by a bunch of gangsters.  At the end of the first act, I have to distract everyone, so I come out enter in the Carmen Miranda outfit singing "Boom Chicka Boom" (from Nick & Nora...I suggested the song) to break up the tension and end the act.  It was one of the highlights of the series (audiences just love men in dresses!) and even several years later, people remembered me from that one moment!

Most of the songs that they use are from the 1940s, so if one is in the proper style and not too well known as a song from a different era, they'll use it.  However, one year they did "Merry Christmas, Darling" by the Carpenters and it really took everyone out of the 1940s.  They haven't used a popular modern song since. ::)

My cats have started a new goofy pass time. Whenever I'm gone, they find socks (I think the ones that the dryer ate - ok there are a bunch in a basket down the basement somewhere) Anyway, they bring them up and decorate the living room. When I came home from work, there were 10 socks in the living room, I went out for dinner and came home and there were 7 socks in the living room. That's 17 socks today that they brought up from the basement!!!

It's better than this past weekend when they found a pair of underwear and decided to put that in the living room!!

I represent a lot of people who are illegally in the country. They all have different stories.  There are many who came here as children and while their parents went through the process of becoming legal, for whatever reason they never got the proper paperwork. So they live their lives here, work, have taxes withheld etc. Then if they come to the attention of the authorities, what happens to them? They are deported to a country where they often don't know anyone and they often don't speak the language.

The big ugly secret with social security is all the illegals who pay into it through their payroll taxes but never will receive and money from it. Without them, Social Security would probably be broke.

I guess I get to know a lot of the people who come here to work, who get in trouble for whatever reason and are then sent to prison before being deported.  I get to know their familes, their kids etc.  It makes me feel a lot differently

As far as the language issue goes. If it's a court proceeding or something legal, a lot of people born here don't understand that English. It's really not unreasonable to explain it in someone's native tongue.

End of my rant

Oh, I just loved her in those "fun girl" episodes, among my favorites of the entire run of GRIFFITH.

Very sad.

HOUSE was a new episode tonight and was very good. One of the things I love about the show is that not every patient survives despite all their best efforts. Cewrtainly makes it seem more real.

BONES had a very affecting episode tonight, too, and it also cleverly worked personal bavkground information about the supporting characters into the episode without making the episode about them. That's how I like to see this kind of character stuff done on these crime procedurals.

Chsitopher Meloni was without Mariska Hargitay completely this week on SVU. There wasn't an explanation offered about where she was, and instead he was paired with a much younger Hispanic detective for a 30 year old case involving four missing Hispanic boys.

Not as gripping as many episodes in this show's run, but OK drama to end the evening.

I've been toying with the idea of shaving it off, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. No pressing reason to keep it but no reason not to have it either. I'm kind of used to it. As long as I keep it, I'll keep up that avatar. When it goes, the avatar will change.

The story behind my name...

My father's main request when discussing potential names for me was that, if I turned out to be male, I be given initials so that he could call me "J.J."  They decided on Joseph as the middle name because it's my dad's first name.  One day my father was watching an episode of Barnaby Jones and heard Barnaby call his nephew "Jedediah" and that was that.  So I guess that, even without The Beverly Hillbillies, Buddy Ebsen can be credited with naming me.

Of course, my father has never called me "J.J." a single day in my life. :D

My name is apparently the result of a disagreement between my parents. They each wanted a different name, and since they couldn't agree, they named me Sandra.

And my avatar is a picture my mom took of me posing with my fencing foil and Swedish chef hat. The picture was taken outside, so the neighbors all had something to wonder about.
