Title: ONE SINGULAR SENSATION

Well, you've read the notes, you're ready to dance the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance, you're ready to celebrate, celebrate, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - after five years, they're finally on their way, although they are formally protesting the ham chunks.

Congratulations.
I came to HHW at about the same timeas DR RLP I think. Was it the beginning of February?

I followed BK from "The Real A" to some other site and then, without any requested help from that site, tracked down BK's new site with the help of Mark "Barkalot".
Memories:  I remember the first post from DR François!
(I wonder if anyone else would remember why!).

I have had such personal support in troubled times from people who are my friends - even though I have yet to meet them. The support given to OzDerek was a gift that is beyond value.

I have still kept contact with people who were once on the old site and have not been seen here at all. And I am still in contact with friends I have made on this site - even though they have chosen for various reasons, to move on.

BK through HHW has given many of us the gift of friendship. A network has grown way beyond the Board itself.  A few "oldies" may remember DR Allan Wood from the UK.. After all this time, I still communicate with Allan every week. We met here but have met in London.

Fond memories of meeting DR François and of the visit to OZ of DR Jose.

HHW has opened a new world of international friendship; a world where we indeed have felt comfortable sharing laughter and tears.

It would be interesting to know the average number of emails and PMs generated by this site each day!!!

We have lost some dear dear readers - Derek, Dennis Clancy, and a few others, I think.  I'd like to think that wherever they're resting that they know they all are recipients of continued excellent vibes and xylophones.

Well, I only got a bit more than six hour of sleep last night, so I'm going to turn it a bit earlier tonight.

At this point the best I can hope for is 2½ hours of sleep tonight/morning.

Cillaliz, love the sock story.

Continued good ear vibes to Ann.

I’m off to try and get those 2½ hours of sleep.

Good morning, all!  Yesterday we finished the Prologue (all 15 minutes worth!) to BABES IN TOYLAND, and I look forward to whatever number Mr Murray has waiting for us today.  I had meant to tell you all about my exciting find on eBay two weeks ago:  a 1903 program from the original Broadway production at the long-gone Majestic Theatre at 59th Street.  Because of the cheap paper used in the program, all the original ones in the NYPL Theatre Collection have crumbled, and I have seen only one at the Museum of the City of New York.  In four years of searching, I've never seen an original Broadway program for sale on eBay, although I have managed to find two from the Chicago Grand Opera House where the show began.  Well, two weeks ago, two original programs turned up!  I won one for the week of Jan 18, 1903, and I am ecstatic.

I found HHW because of Liz Callaway.  The last recording Dear Friend BK had asked me to do was Brent Barrett's Alan Jay Lerner album, and I turned him down:  I had just come from a tense recording with the same arranger and I did not want to work with him at that time.  BK went his way along with Haines and I went mine: in April 2001, I got heavily involved with the Packard Humanities Foundation musical theatre project, Jerome Kern, and Victor Herbert and spent a lot of the year in London.  I had no idea of what was going on in Sept 2001 with my friend BK:  I was too busy after 9/11 trying to get back to New York from London.

I don't think I heard of BK's situation until early 2002, when I was informed of it by one of the party's responsible for the situation:  I needed to purchase some promotional CDs to take with me on a job with the New York State Theatre Institute and I had to contact someone at the recording office to make the purchase.  I was told of reprehensible behavior and nefarious deeds.  It was the phone equivalent of reading a POLICE GAZETTE.  It didn't sound like the BK I knew, but I was hearing about him by someone I had known for about 20 years.  I had worked with the big embezzler John Jerome, so what did I know about my employers' private lives?

In Oct 2001, I was given a used Mac and I learned to do two things on a computer: email and eBay.  When I used Google, it was to search for info on shows and personnel on the musical theatre project.  I never Googled "Bruce Kimmel," which is too bad because I might have found HHW two years earlier.  In August 2003, Liz Callaway had a concert, she'd contacted Bruce about some charts, and she needed my help in putting things together.  I asked her how Bruce was doing, she told me what she had heard, as did I, and she mentioned that Bruce had a website, which I checked out after our visit.  I looked at HHW, and there was a "contact Bruce" link so I sent him an email.  Bruce's reply also mentioned a possible interview for HHW, and I said yes.  I went off to the Nov 2003 Chicago Humanities Festival and forgot about it.  Then, in December, I got a series of interview questions to answer and a few weeks later I was a feature on HHW!

I never, ever, meant to become an HHW member:  out of nothing but unadulterated vanity, I started lurking to see what folk thought of my interview.  After lurking for a few weeks, I decided I liked the people who were posting regularly, and in February or March 2004 elmore3003 became a member.   It was the smartest thing I did in 2003.

Someone (Danthe Man?) asked about the new Sondheim book:  in the first few chapters I'm learning things and finding holes in the author's research.  The author may have studied the complete works of Sondheim but sometimes he cannot put 2 and 2 together about other things: he mentions CARMEN being one of the few operas Steve likes, but he doesn't make any connection between CARMEN and CARMEN JONES, Hammerstein's adaptation, although we get lots about Hammerstein's influence.  I wonder how much of Steve's Kern appreciation stems from Hammerstein.

He mentions two meetings with Steve and Cole Porter, but because he doesn't know Porter well enough, he misses one important connection between Steve and Porter:  Maurice Ravel.

I also wonder if he ever heard a complete performance tape of the original cast of FOLLIES:  he mentions the cutting of the contrapuntal section of AH, PARIS!, BROADWAY BABY and RAIN ON THE ROOF but the contrapuntal ending is in the original production and the published score!

On the other hand, the musical analyses are interesting.

Matthew Modine's book looks quite strange but interesting.

So much to write about and so little time.

First, before I forget

Jose, please ask Christopher Bloch if he's from Minnesota? If he is, I seriously doubt that he will remember me but we worked together a few times at various community theatres in the Twin Cities area, most memorably in an awful new musical called "The Garfield Nude" It was a takeoff on film noir and detective movies. I played a Peter Lorre kind of character along with a Sidney Greenstreet partner. Chris played the romantic lead detective. I can't remember the character's name. That was the show where I fell halfway down a circular metal staircase as I made an entrance. We also did a production of Mr. Roberts way, way, way back in 1974. OMG (oh, my God in internet lingo) that was 30 years ago!!!

I am named after my father who was named after his grandfather and father. My full name is Benjamin Thomas McLaughlin (that was my father's name also) My great grandfather was named Benjamin Roberts (my grandmother's father) and my grandfather's name was Thomas McLaughlin. My father became Benjamin Thomas McLaughlin. My father, like George's father, DID NOT want to call me Junior. He also made a similar comment about too many 40 and 50-year old men being called Junior. He wanted to name me me BTM the Second which is technically wrong in the naming business. You're the Second if you're named after a grandparent or someone other than your father.

When I was getting into the business (acting that is) I knew that if someone else in one of the unions already had your name you had to change it so I spent some time trying to come up with different names in case I needed to make a change. I considered Ben Roberts, Tom Benjamin and Ben Thomas. Luckily, I didn't need to change my name and I'm very happy with it.

My new avatar, which has been up for a couple of months, is from a lunch with DRs Larry, Danise (where is that girl???) and Michael Shayne at the Comfort Diner on 23rd Street near Fifth Avenue (we were sitting in back of B.D. Wong who was having lunch with his parents). I put it up because it's a decent picture of me and the old avatar, which had Anthony and me in front of the pool table at his parent's home on Long Island was so small that it was difficult to see.

I'm here all by myself so I'll frenzy a bit since I haven't posted much lately. I'm finishing up some projects so that my desk will be clean when I walk out of here on Wednesday, November 23rd, not to return until January 3rd, 2006 (our office is closed on Monday, January 2, 2006).

I found HHW (I've told this story before) because I love radio. I've got a fairly relaxed work situation and am able to listen to radio or music during my workday. I was looking for Internet radio shows that featured show music and I came across Donald's old show at the site that is not to be named. There were many archived shows and I listened to them all. Donald is a real treat (I'm listening to him now) and I love his radio show. When I finished all the old shows (not knowing ANYTHING of the problems at the old site) I sent an e-mail saying how much I enjoyed the shows and asked if they had any new shows coming up. I received a reply saying they wanted to get a new show up but were not sure when it would happen. I then googled Mr. Feltham and lo and behold it lead me to this here site. I came sometime in 2002 ( I don't remember the exact date and I don't feel like searching - so sue me). I lurked for a while until I realized that these folks don't bite. I remember one of my first posts was to ask BK what he thought about Bernadette Peters being cast as Rose in Gypsy. Even though I don't post every day, I've been here ever since. I NEVER thought I would end up coming to a site like this every day. I see some other sites where vitrol and insult seem to be the order of the day and I just thought "I don't want to be part of that". I'm surprised and pleased to say that, besides being one of the most popular sites on the Internet, it is also one of the most civil and friendly.

A couple of highlights both have to do with HHW get togethers in New York. Dear Penny's wonderful, wonderful show last spring was a highlight. It's amazing that so many people came to the city to meet and to see Penny's show. That was touching for me as well, I'm sure, for Penny. The other highlight was just last month with the second East Coast get together. I had a week of fun and games with wonderful people from all over the country. It couldn't have been better. What a sweet group of people.

One of next year's highlights will be the arrival of Mr. Tom from Australia. New York will be prepared.

It's now 8:03 and I must get to work.

Later, gaters.

Happy Anniversary to HHW!  DR elmore introduced me to this site when I spent time with him in NYC in early October 2004 and I signed on later that month.  It's great to know that there are lovely people out there whenever one feels the need for some company.  The get-togethers I've attended so far (2 in NYC and the Mamma Mia gathering in Indianapolis) were highlights of 2005.  I'd sort of let my interest in theater, especially musicals, languish and I'm very thankful to have that rekindled and nourished here.

My avatar was in the file of computer images I'd collected when putting together the website for my book group:

www.orgsites.com/oh/joyluckclub (http://www.orgsites.com/oh/joyluckclub)

I dislike most photographs of myself, so decided to use the "pink reader" to identify myself here.  Actually, one of the group photos taken on the Oct. 5 tour contains a "head shot" that I might want to use, but I need some technical help.  Any volunteers?

I go way back before HHW. It started with Bay Cities and followed him to the next site. (Actually it goes back to the time when I found the original LP release of STAGES and remembered him from all his tv appearances) I was so dishearten when he was forced out. I wrote to him and ask me to keep me informed. He emailed me and told me about HHW.

Biggest pluses: Met some many wonderful people involved with HHW. The LA and NYC coasts. And one from Penn State.

Reconnected i with Matt Hough who I have never met in person but first connected with him on the old style bulletin board which in same ways is similar to this board.

Finally met Bruce at a performance of Hairspray. He was very much like his personality that he exudes here on the board. I debated and I never told him this, but I wanted to go over say to him. Where you in The First Nudie Musical? Then I would say Stephan Nathan's name and list some of the other male stars other than him, But I didn't.

Finally I did something I thought I could never do, but I did, was create a website. It has been a lot of fun. Sometimes it is hard to catch up with all the news that is happening and post it.

There has been good time and bum times. But I am still here. And I hope that I will be able to contribute to this board in years to come.

Congrats to Bruce Kimmel and all the Haines His Way People!

I first found this site when I was googling Skip's name and ran across an interview Bruce did with Danny Burstein.  (Bruce had always been very complimentary about Skip's score for TIME AND AGAIN and Danny had been in the show in San Diego, along with Danny's now-wife Rebecca Luker.)   I started doing the trivia questions, then started reading the notes daily, not really going beyond them into the daily discussions - until at one point there was a reference to the fact that there had been a trivia clue in the daily discussions.  So I checked out the clue and got hooked on the wonderful discussions, lurked for a while, and finally took the plunge and registered.

I have edited a post which I created recently for the Scarlet Street Forums, a post in response to xome very nasty, uniformed things being said about people whom I consider "friends:"

In my college years, I saw a musical film which has proven to be yet another life-altering experience: THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL, for it was with this film that the name Bruce Kimmel became known to me. (Almost certainly I had seen his guest shots on M*A*S*H, HAPPY DAYS and THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY, but TFNM was in a different ballpark than television fare).
It wasn't until 1993, however, that Bruce would truly make shattering changes in my life.  On the Varese Sarabande Label, Mr. Kimmel began producing a series of "Unsung" albums - cds devoted to either composers or shows with songs which had shamefully not been recorded.  Unsung Sondheim was the first in my collection, but the next one, Unsung Musicals, came at a time when I was working on a benefit revue devoted to flop musicals.  A godsend indeed, for here was yet another wealth of material which could be put to use by the five voices in my show.  Not only that, but, if it weren't copywritten, what a great title that would be for my show!   Thus came my one and only "meeting" with Bruce Kimmel.  Yes, it's true.  I have never met Bruce, but through the years, I have come to think of him not only as an inspiration, but as a friend.  But one afternoon, in 1994, thanks to Esther Monk, I was connected to THE Bruce Kimmel.  Our telephone conversation was brief - he gave me his blessing to use UNSUNG MUSICALS for the title of my revue and told me how much he, as many others had already told me, loathed Stephen Sondheim's new musical, PASSION. Oddly enough, only ONE of the songs from Mr. Kimmel's cd wound up in my show, and that song ended up there only because a certain vocal coach I had know for a few months handed me the sheet music to a song which she felt I should be learning.  That song was from the flop musical SMILE, and has since become my signature song: "Disneyland."  Odd that Roseanna Irwin, the coach, had never heard of Bruce's work, or that he had has Jodie Benson record that song for him; she just felt that song was right for my range and emotions. . .
Now a big flash forward to the year 2000. . .
That would be the year that I saw an advert in the newsgroup alt.video.dvd for reviewers for a new dvd site.  Now I had written plays, I had written cabarets, I had written revues, but, I had never written critical analyses of anything (other than required term papers and such), so I thought, "Why Not?"    I submitted my review of the dvd of the Broadway production of VICTOR/VICTORIA (yes, a musical) to the new site's owner, Zach Borden.  Zach took me on as a reviewer and posted that review.
So, I was writing for dvdlaunch, I was writing for Scarlet Street when a very special dvd was released.  A dvd of a movie very special to me, directed by a person whose online antics I had followed from a Sondheim site, rec.arts.theatre.musicals' newsgroup, fynsworth alley, and finally, the most popular site on the internet, www.haineshisway.com - yup, the one, the only, Bruce Kimmel.  Not only did I review the dvd for both the site and Scarlet Street magazine, but, I had the extreme honor of interviewing Mr. Kimmel for the site.  I still have yet to have a full-frontal meeting with Mr. Kimmel, but, I speak to him on a nearly daily basis on his website, and a dream came true when my name appeared in print on the liner notes of a cd which BK had a hand in creating . . .Anyone who thinks that Mr. Kimmel is only a dissenting voice in the fandom wars, should hie themselves to http://www.brucekimmel.com/, a gloriously comprehensive site, to see just what kind of accomplishments Bruce is capable of.

This site, and BK himself, has brought so many of us together!  My trips to NYC would not be complete without a dinner at Joe Allen's with Larry . . .I've shared the company of Ben, Michael S., AlexPaige, EvilTwin and so many others.

HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY TO HHW AND ALL ITS DENIZENS!

Good Morning!

I actually keep meaning to track down - if possible - the first time I posted here on HHW - well, at least on the "old style" board.  -Does anyone know if that's still possible?  In any case...

I had more or less followed BK from the other site a few months after HHW got started.  -At least I think it was a few months afterwards.  Heck, I can't even remember what brought me here in the first place right now.  But I'm here, and I've been having a great time ever since then - whenever "then" was.

I've made a lot of friends here on this site, and I've been fortunate to meet many of them in person over the past few years.  And I've even lined up some gigs courtesy of this site: vocal arranging "Aurora" for the "Jeepers Creepers" CD; music directing What If?; playing for Jewish Thighs on Broadway off-Broadway.

But it has been the people on this site that have made it worth it taking a few moments each day - well, sometimes a few hours each day - to check in, read and post.  And post some more.  :)  The underlying current of generosity, compassion and understanding continue to make the time I spend here on HHW a truly worthwhile "investment".  And, again, I feel very fortunate to have met many Dear Readers in person, in many different cities, even in different countries.  And I'm very happy to call many of them very good friends.

I arrived at HHW in the spring of 2002, I think it was, at the urging of JRand55, who I had met on-line a couple of years earlier via Ebay and our shared love of actress Allison Hayes.  JRand55 kept telling me about this hear wonderful sight so I finally checked it out. 2 days later I was a full fledged posting member! I can still recall the wonderful welcome from DR Jane who made me feel right at home immediatly.

When I began posting on HHW I was a Broadway flunky...didn't know RENT from MAN OF LAMANCHA...and, well, I still don't! LOL! But I was accepted and welcomed all the same.

I am fortunate to have been able to meet many of the DRs face to face and to attend get togethers in both Portland and NY, as well as brief encounters in Los Angeles. Those meetings will remain highlights of my adult life!

And of course if it weren't for HHW I would never have developed such an obsession appreciation of Bollywood movies (thanks BK and JRand55, for that!).

But before I go, an anniversary joke department:  (I hope no one has already posted this, haven't been very good at catching up for the past few days).

A man dies, gets to the Pearly Gates, sees St. Peter surrounded by a bunch of clocks.  "What are those?" he asks.  "They're lying clocks--everytime you lie, your lie clocks hands move.  See, there's Mother Theresa's clock--the hands haven't moved at all because she never told a lie.  And there's Abraham Lincoln's clock.  The hands have only moved twice, because Lincoln only told two lies in his lifetime."  "Where is George Bush's clock?" the man asks.  St. Peter replies, "Oh, that one's in Jesus' office being used as a ceiling fan."

I was referred to this site after making inquires about bk after his leaving the label that dare not speak its name. I had enjoyed so much all of the CDs he had produced at Bay Cities and Varese and that other place and had visited their website often to read the news and listen to Donald's radio show (when I could still do that over a dial-up connection.)

But when bk left "that place," I wanted to know what he was doing next. I wrote Ken Mandelbaum and Peter Filichia and any other critic who had reviewed his CDs to see what they knew. I was referred here and have been here ever since.

Well, I need to leave the partay for a few to take care of some phone calls (grrrr), e-mails (related to the phone calls - grrrr), and then get ready to head in for rehearsal.  I don't begin until 4:30 today, but there's a production meeting at 1:00, and I also need to spend some time in the copy room.

I can't rightly remember what year I started posting on this site..I think 2000 maybe.  I'll let Jed give a more exact date when he gets home.  It was he who led me here, knowing my fondess for Broadway and my liking for all things quirky.  I still can't quite believe a mere internet website has produced such a wonderful, caring group of people.  I can honestly say you all have become a special part of my life, whether I've met you in person (yet) or not.  :)

Speaking of phone calls, for the last year or so, I have been a member of netmarket.com, an AOL warehouse-type sales site. Membership originally was free, and in the years I've been a member, I've bought one thing.

Anyway, I get this card saying in a few weeks, membership will have a rate of $89.99 per year, and that my credit card will be charged unless I contact them. I HATE THIS WAY OF DOING BUSINESS!

So, first I try to cancel membership through e-mail. I get a response that they can't do that and I'll have to call a toll free number. You know what that means: one of those infamous AOL high pressure sales pitches to keep you on board.

Well, I was kept on hold for 20 minutes waiting "for the next available prepresentative." Finally I get someone barely fluent in English and it takes 10-15 minutes to finally say NO for the umpteenth time to get the membership canceled. I was offered gift certificates and free shipping and all kinds of things to stick around. They tried the trick of saying they'd send me a gift certificate in the mail which I could use BEFORE MY MEMBERSHIP lapsed. Of course, the certificate and any subsequent shopping would carry me past December 1 and then that $89.99 would kick in automatically.
Anyway, I denied all their tactics and get the thing canceled.

Hey what did you guys think of TAR last night?

DR MBarnum did you watch or tape?

In case some of you taped I'll leave some space.

I'm not a big fan of non-eliminations.  But it definitely helps when it is a 2 hour show (then i don't mind).  I think I don't really like the non-elims because it seems a bit unfair.  The sisters should have been out, and yet some how they have now finished first ... twice!

Was I the only one who got mad that their boat beat the Linz family (and they sole their trailer). I really hated that.

I did like how the Paolos told the Bransens to put their clothes on (on top of their other clothes). That probably helped them a lot!

Interesting how not stopping to check which highway to take was the Paolos' downfall. Not too sorry to see them go.

Weird that they didn't even stop at the Grand Canyon.  Sad that the Linz family got screwed on their flight! (i hate it when the team in the lead gets screwed over with the worst flight).

Good show though. Hopefully they will get on a plane again next episode. Not too thrilled that they came back to the US.

My fav team is definitely the Linz Family. Although all the brothers seem like one to me (same with all the Bransen sisters). Funny how the daughters were able to easily secure the money at the casino. Great line, "well you'll probably end up losing it anyways!" :)

Happy Anniversary to HHW!

I was referred here by DR JMK sometime in 2001, I guess, maybe 2000!  I have had a wonderful time ever since.

Of course I owned SEVERAL of Mr BK's CD's without ever imagining that I would ever actually be in contact with The Man Himself.  And here I am!

What a wonderful bunch of people - dare I say - friends!

I would be upset if it was Jack or Kate or Sun.  I could handle Locke (never cared for him). I would hate to lose Hurley (think he's funny).  And there are a few others I like.

The paper here has had features on tonight's show all week.  Going from a ridiculous page outlining everyone's odds (with Jack at even to go).  But today they always do a recap saying what will happen on each show (sometimes they give too much info). But one interesting thing that was mentioned was that if you want to find out who is going, you can easily search for spoilers on the net.

Hmmm, I think I will wait. Although not sure if I will be home to watch the show live (plus I usualy watch Martha Stewart Apprentice and tape Lost).  But I know everyone will be talking about it.  So I had best watch it tonight some time.

Ha, well that totally guarantees that it will NOT be Sawyer.  Plus I think women tend to swoon over him, so I don't think they would get rid of him.

I do wonder why they have to get rid of anybody.

Oh there was an interesting bit (in the paper today). It doesn't give any indication of who will go. But it does give a tiny bit of info.

Don't read if you don't want to know.

The bit implies that whoever goes tonight may be murdered (which would rule out Sawyer dying from his injury).  Now who would be most hated on the island? Locke?  Not Jack. Not Sun. Not Jin. I suppose that whoever goes could always be killed by The Others.

Hopefully it will be interesting. I'm guessing it will be.

This day started out really crappily (I don't think that's a word, but there it is), but now that I know that it's the 5th Anniversary of HHW, I'm in a slightly better mood. Congrats, BK!!

I found HHW.com through All That Chat. They featured a banner across the top of the page, and I recognized Bruce's name, so I decided to click. After reading through some of the truly crazy posts, I decided that this felt like a good fit and I stayed. I was temping at ABC Family Channel when I first came to HHW and I had LOTS of time for posting. That's back when I was just working one job. My, how things change for us all over the years, huh?

Even though some of us come and go and come again, there's a wonderful feel of family and community here - even with the DRs that we've never met in real life. Yes, we have our tiffs with one another from time to time, but for the most part we get over it and things return to 'normal,' and that's indicative of family, isn't it?

It's been a real thrill to meet many of the DRs in person. I don't know many other websites that are frequented by the calibur of folks we have here at HHW. If not for this site, I'd never have discovered Becco; I wouldn't have the thrill of living out my Broadway dreams vicariously through DR Jose [;)]; I wouldn't have my wonderful Thursday night regular movie-going buddies Ben and Ant; I wouldn't have had the chance to fly to Chicago to sing for a wonderful charity organization with one of the best theatre organists in the world and to spend time with him and his wonderful partner; I wouldn't have had the opportunity to lend my voice to a recording with Tony-winner Judy Kaye and work with "the" Bruce Kimmel; I wouldn't know what the frell Joe Allen was; I wouldn't have had the chance to taste DR Sandra's amazing chocolate chip cookies or to see DR Laura's beautiful photographs; I'd never have met all the wonderful folks from around the country (and the world) that I've met who have taken me under their wings, expanded my horizons and my view of the world and educated me in countless ways. And let's be honest, I wouldn't have an outlet for my craziness if it weren't for this here site, either.

This is so much better than going to therapy. Or, in Jose's case, going to Therapy. ;)

Happy Anniversary!! I joined  November 22, 2004 after stumbling on the site completely by accident... I was at work and sitting on hold and out of boredom googled  the name of my dear friend  William F. Orr  and simultaneoulsy my own maiden name... Google diredctd me to this here site where DR WFO had posted something about a gift I had given to him .

I saw that I had to join to leave a message and thought it would be funny to PM  Bill on this site so I quickly joined using my ebay user name and then PM  Bill and thought no more about it.

When Bill got my message he called me and told asked me how I found the sire and what I thought of it.  Iexplained I really hadn't looked at it, and oinly joined to PM him as a joke... he told all about it and said he thought I would like it and should pop in and give it a try... I've been here ever since.

I never belonged to any other internet groups  (except for a 'Mom Chat" when the Vixter was about 3 or 4)  but I am pleased to say that I felt I made a lot of friends when I joined here.

I have been blessed to have mnet so many of you ion person already, the food tour and Dr PennyO's show and Danise's & my Central Park excursion bookenede by meets with Ginny, Cillaliz, Jane. elmore, Ben & Jason were all wonderful and I look forward to other meets.

I learn so much from so many of you on this site and feel truly privleged and honored that you accept me here.

I have received many kindnesses over this past year from so manyof you and I hope that I am able to repay ou all.  Even the Vixter, although not a member has been a recipient  of so many wonderful gifts as a result of you wonderful people out there...

Thank you Bruce... for "taking lemons and making lemonade"... or maybe even a fine wine!!

Happy Anniversary to Bruce Kimmel and one and all/all and one who have posted here over the years.

I first encountered BK at filmus-l, the film music discussion list, in a discussion involving one Joe Caporiccio.

The next time was at rec.music.movies when I was being attacked for my observations of the Academy Awards show (the year "A Beautiful Mind" won the Oscar).  BK invited me to bring myself and my thoughts to HHW.com, and here I am, since March 25, 2002.

I've enjoyed the association, and wish him much continued success in all current and future endeavors.

P.S.  Since HHW.com started in November 2001, isn't this the 4th anniversary?

I'm up, I'm up, and have read all the lovely postings.

Last night, I dreamed I was at Manderley.  In my dream, I arrived at a party.  Every single person at the party seemed to know me and shook my hand, even though I didn't really know them (except a young Dustin Hoffman - he was there, but didn't seem to know me).  Then someone handed me a potato pancake, which I ate.  It needed salt.  The End.

I debated whether this was our fourth or fifth anniversary, but since we're starting our fifth year this day, I decided that made it our fifth anniversary.  Of course, in order to arrive at that conclusion, one has to consider that November 9, 2001 was our first anniversary.  Since I don't feel like fixing the notes or the posts, that is indeed what I've done, math never being my strong suit.  In other words, 2005 to 2006 is our fifth year of postings.

Re CAPTAIN LOUIE and the logic of moving a show that's not doing great business in a somewhat "obscure" venue to a more prominent venue.  (My understanding is that SOUVENIR was papering as well at the York, yet the producer believed in it enough to move that as well, and it remains to be seen how that does in the high profile arena.)  The most recent success story of this nature is I AM MY OWN WIFE, which was not coming remotely close to selling out at Playwrights Horizons, but the producers figured it might do well with a higher profile, and the rest - in a small way - is theater history.  Sometimes the gamble pays off, sometimes it doesn't.
Title: Re:ONE SINGULAR SENSATION
Post by: Jason on November 09, 2005, 10:47:28 AM
I agree that I AM MY OWN WIFE was a huge gamble, but I think the show only ran on the strength of Jefferson Mays' extraordinary performance.

CAPTAIN LOUIE does not have the benefit of a standout performance. Sadly, despite my affection for Mr. Schwartz's work, I have to say LOUIE doesn't have the benefit of his strongest work, either. It's also a lot to ask for parents to pay $49 a pop (only $30 for kids under 16) to see a 70 minute show, so filling the Little Schubert, which really ain't all that little, is quite a feat. Of course, the show has a fairly large cast for an off-Broadway show, and the rent on that venue must be through the roof, so they have to charge that much to cover expenses.

I'm shocked that SOUVENIR is transferring to the Broad Way, as well. Granted, they have Judy Kaye's amazingly funny and touching performance as Florence Foster Jenkins to carry the show, but when I saw it at the York, even Ms. Kaye's talents were barely enough to keep it interesting. And the subject matter is so osbcure - very few people in the general public know or care about Florence Foster Jenkins. When I saw the show at the York, I was one of about 8 people in the theatre, and the two people next to me had been comped. I understand wanting to give a show a chance, but SOUVENIR on BROADWAY never crossed my mind - it just isn't that kind of show.

Any "Desperate Housewives"/Broadway enthusiasts should research the episode titles for the show.

http://epguides.com/DesperateHousewives/

Here are a few:

"Children Will Listen"
"Sunday in the Park With George"
"You'll Never Get Away From Me"
"Every Day A Little Death"
"The Ladies Who Lunch"
"Your Fault"
"(Fear) No More"

Staples needs two hours to Xerox the music, mostly because of the length of elmore's chart for my song What Do I Do Now - I'm Xeroxing the entire orchestration, because we'll be putting some of it on the second keyboard.

Happy Annivarsary, BK and HHW!

BK, may not remember it, but he and I met briefly at our favourite bookstore, Mystery & Imagination (aka Bookfellows), when it was still on Broadway before it moved to Brand.  We were introduced by the store owner and I told him that I was a fan of his Varese recordings.

Years later, I'm in the store (now moved to Brand) on a Saturday afternoon and BK is reading from the first two Kritzer books.  Very funny.  After the reading, I had some of the proffered ham and cheese chunks (and a very good chocolate cake) washing it down with the ubiquitious Diet Coke, bought the two books, had Bruce sign them, and we proceeded to bullshit, the conversation getting more animated as the "do" wound down.  We found out we had a lot in common and liked a lot of the same stuff.

He suggested I would be a ripe subject for an unseemingly interview.  Being the PR whore I am, I readily agreed.  We exchanged info.  I went to the site to check out other interviews and would read his notes and listen to the Donald's radio show.

Lo and behold, a few days later I got Bruce's very amusing questions which I tried to answer in the same attitude and style and subsequently wound up with the interview of mine I enjoy the most.  I told him to feel free to cut it; but he loved it as is and published the whole thing.  Like elmore, my first serious forays onto the message board were to see if there was any reaction to the interview and then I started responding to some posts and the rest...as they say...is history.

Shortly after the interview, BK suggested we go to dinner and I and The Lovely Wife met him at the first of what has become many dinners at Musso and Frank's and elsewhere where we laugh and laugh until we think we can laugh no more.

I dance the hora, chomp a ham and cheese chunk, and toast you with Diet Coke, ole chum!

~~~ HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO HAINESHISWAY!! ~~~
I have to get that in because today is the one day a month at work where we're on a deadline.  We (in the Acquisitions Department) have to get all of our invoices paid in our system so that we can give everything to the Business Department so that they can actually print and mail the checks to all of the places where we bought books and CDs and DVDs.  It's not always on the same day each month, but it's always on a Wednesday.  So I'm invoicing away....
AND I have to get everything done early because I have to leave early tonight because I'm ushering for a tour of N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk (http://www.speaktheaterarts.com/speak.html).  According to a blurb, it's:
Winner of the 2003 award for “Best Play” from the American Readers Theater Association, N*GGER WETB*CK CH*NK is an explosive comedy that charges into the dangerous territory of race in America without the predictable anger and angst. The play was developed from actual life stories of its three cast members, all recent graduates of UCLA, and has been compared to the early work of Culture Clash or Chris Rock. Called explosive and jaw-dropping, the work de-powers these derogatory terms in fresh and funny ways. The words may be uncomfortable, but the humor is real.
And because of that, I have to tape tonight's Martha's "Apprentice," "Lost" and "Invasion."  Fortunately, I set my VCRs last night...and correctly!  But don't worry about talking about it.  I'm going to watch "Lost" before I log back in to HHW, tonight.  I MUST WATCH LOST!! ;D
Lunch was yum.
I couldn't make up my mind at the Shan Dong Mandarin  Restaurant, so I ordered a luncheon plate of the house special (Szechuan) Shan Dong chicken and a plate of the tomato beef.  I ate barely half of each dish and now have lots for din-din (unless I'm attacked in the late afternoon by someone with the munchies).
We are having the most glorious weather here today.  The air is clean, cool and breezy.  There is a hint of either fog or clouds moving in from the west (from the S.F. side of the bay).
It's one of those lazy days that can break your heart when they end, if -- in fact -- you're free enough to enjoy them to their fullest.
I have to stand up and shout out for all the world to hear that I am thrilled beyond measure about yesterday's election returns in California.
I wish some newspaper had pasted the banner:
Arnold's Props Flop
but I can settle with the knowledge that all the propositions failed.
There may have been one or two that should have passed...Arnold sponsored only four of the eight, from what I'm told.  But....the message was sent.  It is very clear to those who sent it.
Word out of the California GOP is that the message received was MUCH different and that Arnold is absolutely certain he is on the right course and that the majority of Kah-lee-FOR-nyuns are with him.
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY was very entertaining. Totally different in look and feel from WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, and I'm sure the budget for this new one was twenty times larger than the penny-pinching budget for the first version.
The color in the first part of he film is very desaturated so that once they get inside the factory, the color is startlingly bright, very WIZARD OF OZ-ish.
Johnny Depp's performance as Willy is odd in its own way and didn't bother me at all how different it was from Gene Wilder's earlier creation.
"Commander in Chief" was pretty good last night, too.
I'm not quite sure how long they can sustain this scenario of Donald Sutherland vs. Geena Davis and the weekly one upsmanship each pulls over the other.
Sometimes, it gets to be a bit much.  And then something unexpected and quite wonderful happens.
Next week's show should be fun...Geena apparently gets some "leverage"!
Well...yes.  One of the aides informed the chief of staff that he was concerned about the mandatory blood testing the presidential staff was having.  He wasn't worried about being positive for drugs, but that he is HIV positive.  The CoS said, "I didn't hear that, and you never told me that."  Then he told the aide that HIV isn't part of the test...that it would constitute an invasion of his privacy to test him without his permission.
The first day I posted was June 15, 2001, the 5th day of this site.  I recognize only three names from that day, JMK, Lolita and Robert Armin.
Penny was in LA & called me for Bruce’s phone number.  I gave her the home number but was compelled to search the internet for his new work number, which eventually led me here.
At the time I had no idea how my life was about to be enriched.  I have made so many new and wonderful friends and I will always cherish the support I received while going through difficult times.  To be a part of the lives of so many different and special people has been interesting, fun, often sad but I feel my life is richer for it.  And then there are the wonderful surprises such as knowing MBarnum’s brother.   Bruce it is very nice we now share more than a yearly Christmas card & a phone call every so often.
If that doesn't get you to your car to listen, well, then I give up.  (I did say "may" though - that's not a money back guarantee.)
I was anticipating receipt of "The Last Starfighter" by today or tomorrow.
Today, I ordered the Harvey Schmidt CD, and discovered that "The Last Starfighter" was STILL IN MY CART.
I can't believe I didn't get further than my cart.  I remember logging into my PayPal account...but why I never finished the transaction I couldn't say. Oh, no.  I could not say.
The deed is now done.  So I can await both with fervid anticipation.  The fantabulous samples of Schmidt at the piano will have me salivating until that CD arrives.
Thanks for finding that first day of posting DR George...and what became of all those people who posted way back then??? Of course Elan and JMK are still around, and WEL...but what about Rebecca, Stacie Jo, David, Ryan, and other names that don't ring a bell?
There were many wonderful voices here in the earlier days, just as there are now.
Among them, Hapgood, Freedunit, William E. Lurie (who is still among us, but posts very seldom), and many others.
Even when the format changed, we had many folks who no longer post.
And where the heck is Emily, who used post frequently?
As BK says, it's like the Grand Hotel...people come, people go...
Congrats, BK!  <cheers>
Jane - If you listen to the Starfighter CD in your car, be warned:  You just may have the sensation of your car levitating halfway through Track #6.
If that doesn't get you to your car to listen, well, then I give up.  (I did say "may" though - that's not a money back guarantee.)
:)
LOL.
Chances are I will be working around the house the next few days.  I now have something to look forward if I have to rush off unexpectedly & do errands.
Hi all!  Remember me?
It seems I picked a good day to return with deep apologies for being E & T.
Many, Many, Many (that’s 3 manys!) Congrats to Bruce, Mr. Haines and the site!
I’m not 100% sure when I started posting.  I know it was around the time Juliana’s journal was being posted about on another board.  There was reference to another site so I believe I Googled something and somehow came up with the HHW.  I remember it was the old version of the site.
I also remember that I lurked for a good long time but liked what I read.  There just didn’t seem to be the fighting and flaming that goes on so many boards both then and now.  Then, one night someone was talking about Errol Flynn films.  Since Errol Flynn is a particular favorite of mine and I had never seen him discussed anywhere else, I decided to join the group.  I received a very warm welcome.
I also seem to remember DR Jane (I think it was Jane) was going in for a Cat scan and was a little concerned about it.  I had just had one the week before and I wanted to tell her that it wasn’t that bad.
DR Elmore was the first person I met, live and in person, from the HHW board.  He made my first trip to NY.  I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for him, I may never have gone back.
When the gathering in March of this year came up, I was a wee bit hesitate but oh, was I glad that I went!   When the “Girls Night Out with The Guys” for October came up, I knew I was there!
I’ve met some truly wonderful people and hope that I will be able to meet more of you next year!   :)
Danise that would have been my 1st MRI at the NIH.  Penny went with me then.  I was very nervous and it turned out to be rather unpleasant experience.  What a difference from then to my last MIR with the new equipment and a reduction of 20 minutes to complete the test.
Okay, all you film buffs, I need some recommendations!  I just joined NetFlix (3-month gift subscription) and I looked at my video rental list, and nothing on there really appeals to me anymore.  I KNOW there are people here who have some wonderful ideas for me.  Here is a breakdown of some films and genres that I've enjoyed in the past:
Love the whole LOTR trilogy.
Love Star Wars, the originals, but not I and II.  III was okay.
Love Drop Dead Gorgeous
Love Mary Poppins, Lady & the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, and Sword in the Stone; but not Snow White or Cinderella
Love Friday and 8 Mile but not Barbershop
Love Half-Baked but not...uh... I forgot the name of that other one  ;)
Love all things Muppet and have seen all the movies
HATED English Patient
Loved Big Night, Les Choristes, didn't like Run Lola Run
Can't handle anything along the lines of Saw, Hotel Rwanda
Hate all things Jane Austen (sorry!)
Disliked Momentum
LOVED Secretary
Love un-PC humor, quirky stories; hate Andie MacDowell; love James Spader
There are probably several must-see Broadway-type films that I haven't seen, e.g. All That Jazz.
So I hope that's enough info to fashion some recommendations.  I'll add more if I think of anything useful.
Thanks!
I can't rightly remember what year I started posting on this site..I think 2000 maybe.
Impressive when the site didn't start until 2001!  ;D  You joined in sometime in the first month or so of 2002.
As for myself, I started reading the notes and posts just a week or two into the site's existance, and made my first post probably early December or so.  I'd been a regular Real A reader, then stumbled across BK's unmistakable writing style at some other website of some sort.  After he vanished from there, I stumbled across a mention (at sondheim.com, I believe) of this here new site and I've been here ever since.  Never thought I'd be a part of any sort of internet community, but, as we all know, this is totally unlike any other internet community.  I've gotten to meet a handful of other DRs and greatly look forward to meeting many more!  Heck, I've even found my long lost cyberfather who has been beyond wonderful in easing my way into the theatre scene in Tacoma.
Congrats to BK and all my fellow Dear Readers!  Here's to many more years of cheese slices and ham chunks!
Good Evening!
Back from rehearsal, and all is well.  Well, all is better.
As I sort of alluded to earlier today, when I went to check my post office box this morning, there was no mail in there for me to pick up.  No check.  Again.  So...
A few phone calls.  A few e-mails.  A few more phone calls.  Well...
I had to head back to post office to drop off an Express Mail package, and went ahead and checked my post office box again just in case there was a late "delivery".  Well, imagine my surprise when I opened my box and there happened to be an envelope in there.  The check!  The check I've been waiting for for at least seven weeks at this point!  And here's where it gets "interesting"...
The person I've been dealing with at this company - which will remain unnamed - swore to me that the check was (re-)cut last Friday and mailed out last Friday.  November 4.  *Of course, the original check was supposedly sent out four weeks ago, but got lost in the mail...  And this replacement check was supposed to be cut and mailed last Wednesday... Well...  When I opened the envelope, I noticed that it was postmarked this past Monday, November 7.  -And it was done on one of those in office postage meters.  Hmm...  And then when I looked at the check, it was dated this past Monday, November 7.  -Last Friday, huh?!?!?!
So... Another phone call.  This time I got her voicemail.  Which was OK.  I kindly informed her that I did indeed receive the check today... And that the both the check and postmark were from this past Monday.  Thank you very much.
Something tells me I won't be receiving a return phone call after leaving that message.
;)
And then it was off to rehearsal, which went very well.  And the production meeting was relatively painless too.
And on the way back from rehearsal I made a Trader Joe's run just to up a few things.  Of course, the "few things" ended up being three very-full bags worth of stuff.  And when the clerk gave me my total, I had a bit of sticker shock - I had managed to put just under $100.00 worth of stuff into my cart.  -Actually, it was exactly $99.00 before tax - and, thankfully, the tax was just another $3.00 and change.
...But at least I have groceries and other supplies for the next couple of weeks.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!
I discovered HHW last winter. I remember the evening quite well. I was sitting at my dining room table making calendars from family photos for Christmas presents and listening to LOST IN BOSTON IV when there was a long pause after Rupert Singing "Hots Michael At the Piano" and then I heard someone singing "I Love Fish"  I got up and picked up the CD and thought - "What on earth??? Is that on the CD or have aliens taken over my stereo?"
So I emailed Rupert and asked him about it.  He told me about his friend Bruce Kimmel and what an Easter Egg is etc.  I figured Bruce must have a great sense of humor and I got curious to find out more about him, so I googled and came up with the HHW site.  I didn't lurk for long before I dove right in and have been here ever since. I felt so welcomed from the first time I posted.
I feel very lucky to have made some wonderful friends here.  I haven't even been on the board a year and have been to get togethers in both Portland and NYC.  I really like everyone I've met and I can't believe that there is another site on the net with such kind, interesting, talented and fun people.  Thanks for being here and letting me be a part of the family
DR Jrand - Damn Yankees will not be updated.  It will be set squarely in the 1950's - 1955 to be exact.
...And I have to say, I love the clothes from that period.  The costume designer is having a wonderful time designing the show.  -Hopefully, the costume shop will have a "wonderful" time building all those costumes.  A cast of 30 with each cast member having at least 3 costumes.  That's a lot of fabric!
to catch up a little, I was named after my Aunt who was named after my Great Grandmother. So I'm at least the 3rd Priscilla.  My middle name is Elizabeth. It was going to be my Aunt's middle name, but my Grandmother thought it was too long of a name so she was Priscilla Lee. My mother liked it, so I'm Priscilla Elizabeth. CSI: NY was a below average entry in the procedural sweepstakes, the wrap-up of the story begun on Monday night. Following the killer back to NYC didn't make it any more interesting, and the couple of surprises that were revealed in the episode's last quarter hour didn't make it worth the effort.
Glad I recorded INVASION, but now I wish I had watched it "live" and had just skipped CSI: NY.
Yes, it is crazy how everything is connected.  Although I'll bet that many people missed Jack in the hospital. And probably some will forget that Shannon's dad must have been the guy we saw Jack not save in an episode last year.  I think it was Jack's wife (he didn't know her at the time) he was in the other car, right?
Will you be contributing any pics to that site?  Are Kilbot and Walty ready for their close-ups?
;)
Another comment about tonight's LOST.
SPOILERS.
I also found it very weird that they did not show Jack or Kate tonight.  What was that about?  It seemed pretty clear from that (at least to me) that the only possible people to go would be: sayid, michael, sawyer, shannon, walt, jin or locke.  The ending was bittersweet. And the upcoming shows should be quite sad.  Also the way it happened was so crazy (although once we saw the person die, i realized how it happened before they showed it).
Anyhow it will be interesting to be able to discuss it more once everyone has seen the show.
Ha! This was my favorite cat-in-a-sink!
(http://catsinsinks.com/images/cats/rotator.php)
If I weren't afraid that Freddy would collapse the sink in the bathroom, I would snap a shot of him in it!
Right now he is asleep on top of the dryer, inside the laundry basket.
Cool! When I look all I see is a big red X! I didn't think it had turned out...maybe it only shows up for those on special internets!
Glad I did some catching up before going to sleep! Really great reading these posts as I often wondered how everyone came to the site.
And speaking of being sleepy...  Since I think I'm going to attempt to go to "class" tomorrow morning before rehearsal - it's Baayork's 45-minute warm up routine - I'll need to head out earlier...  So...
Goodnight.
As for me, well, it all began when a pal of mine from childhood came to visit and brought movies to watch. "You've got to see this thing called SPACESHIP," he said. And it was just one of those movies that just hit me in all the right spots. At that time, I happened to be reading Danny Peary's CULT MOVIES book, which discussed TFNM. Suddenly, there was an auteur to be researched.
I contacted BK at a now-defunct site, and he emailed me back, which was cool. And I was surprised to find he had such a major involvement in showtunes. A couple years later, I researched again and found this site, but I was a little confused. Was it sponsored by Hanes Underwear? Who was this Guy Haines?
Then in February, of this year, I was passing the joys of SPACESHIP on to TPunk, and I found this site again and have been blown away ever since by the sheer breadth of knowledge of movies, music, stage by all the folks on here. There just aren't that many places for a true eclecticist to go to blab with people about everything under the sun. That's why this has been my internet home.
Great moments...
Eating pancakes in LA with the great BK himself
Movies at Elmores (no cheap porn, unless HULLABALLOO episodes count)
Dim Sum in Oakland with Ron P
Talking obscure hits with the master, Tomovoz
Talking Bea Wain with the dude behind the phrase "Be afraid. Be very afraid."
Watching Jose's show in Williamstown
The many posts on Oscar night
Meeting all the folks who have come to NYC and those who live here. It's easier now to name the people I haven't met!
For friendships and vibes, this place is no joke.
Oh yes, and seeing TPunk post here, after a few months where she probably wondered what the heck I was up to. Now she knows!
I have truly enjoyed these postings today - they're what we're all about.  Now, might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  It's our anniversary, for heaven's sake - we don't need no WUSSBURGERS tonight.  We need party people.
I can't post, I'm too busy doing the Hora, eating ham hunks and cheese chunks and drinking Diet Coke.
