Good morning, all!  In the immortal words of Rise Stevens, "Allison! Where IS everybody?"  I'm never this far up on the posting line.  What happened to DRs Hisaka and Tomovoz?  Too much partay yesterday?  It was quite a festive day and I'm still tuckered out.

My 9:30 meeting has been canceled, so I'm off to the Post Office, then  a flu shot before I come back and finish this overture to Mario Frangoulis' concert.

I have no jewelry, so I have nothing to say on the TOD.

Good Morning all!

Jose, how wonderful that you're working with Chris. I looked at the dates for Damn Yankees. A trip down would have to be in January probably since December is full up with events and trips. I see that you run through February 9th. I'll see what I can do. I will also contact a friend who now lives in Richmond and operates a chain of Mystery Dinner Theatres. Jim used to live in Minnesota and knows Chris as well. They worked together at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre if I recall correctly. It would be great to have a mini-Minnesota reunion in Washington, DC.

What a sassy day we had yesterday. I finished off the day by seeing The Color Purple w/DR Jason. It was an excellent show. Both La Chanze (Celie) and Felicia Fields (Sofia) will most likely get Tony nominations for this show. The show is a bit long but not looking at your watch long and when will this end. It's a moving and lyrical piece which mixes well the dark and difficult periods of Celie's life with song and color and real beauty. I'm glad I got to see the show.

On that note, I will leave for a while to get some work done.

Later.

I wear no jewelry.  Not even a watch.

Glasses don't count, unless they belong to either Elton John or Dame Edna, who have the same flair for that kind of thing.

Nor do I care for perfumery.  There's just too much use of perfume in the world.  I mean, heck, you can even buy perfumed toilet paper, which strikes me as redundant.

I wouldn't mind having a gemstone around, of course.  The Hope Diamond would make a great paperweight.  Only Fletcher, the Mouthy Dalmatian, would probably try to eat it.

I will probably be pluabsent and plutruant all of tomorrow, as well.  Since the grandlads won't have school (some school function), der Brucer and I will be rescuing them from day care and treating them to a day of fun and frolic.  A light lunch, a bookstore visit, a movie, and then dinner.  All with Mommie far, far away!

Topic of the day - My favorite piece of jewelry that i own is the ring that my late uncle used to wear.  My aunt gave it to me after my uncle died, and for a while would ask why I'm not wearing it, but I would explain to her that I look at it often and remember my uncle.    (My uncle had been a well-respected rabbi who taught in a local Brooklyn Yeshivah, so at one point my aunt had thought of giving the ring to the Yeshivah, but I'm sure it would have gotten lost there.  This way, the intent is for it to stay in the family.)

I wear a plain gold wedding band (it was my father's) and when he died I got his wedding ring (my mother had already passed away) and a beautiful radio from the 30s/40s. Those of you who have been to our apartment have seen the radio. I also have a ring which was my great grandfather's (on my father's side). It's a gold band with a platinum top and a very small diamond inside. My father had it (his grandfather gave it to him and apparently caused a small rift between him and his older brother who felt he should have gotten the ring) and gave it to me when I graduated from high school. I wear both of these rings daily. The wedding ring symbolizes my "wedding" to Anthony even though it's not legal or official in many peoples eyes. I also wear a Tigger and Pooh watch. If we are going to a dressy affair I will sometimes change the watch to my silver dress watch. I also have an original Mickey Mouse tie clip from the original Mickey Mouse Club. I got it sometime in the late 50s. I like to wear it and see if people notice.

Some interesting things have happened on this day, November the 10th.

For example, on November 10th, 1871, journalist Henry Morton Stanley found missing explorer Dr. David Livingstone near Lake Tanganyika - "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"  (It would have been embarassing if he'd presumed wrong, of course, but I doubt we'd have heard the story if that were the case.)

Eighty years later, on November 10th, 1951, coast-to-coast direct telephone dialing was introduced.  This meant that anyone could place a call to the other coast without operator assistance.  (Not that this would have helped Mr. Stanley or Dr. Livingstone; I seriously doubt they were still on speaking terms by that time.)

TOD:

I also wear nothing in the way of jewelry aside from a watch.  I just never took to it.  I eschewed both high school and college rings because I thought what was the point of getting them if I wasn't going to wear them.

The only jewelry I ever wore for any period of time was a cheap reproduction of Barnabas' ring when I was in grammar school and a silver ankh a girlfriend in college gave me, both long lost.  I do still have a gold initial ring my aunt gave me for my first Communion and my dad's wedding band.

Cologne?  I have a bottle of Gray Flannel that I use once in a while.  I also have a bottle of Hai Karate.  I'm careful how I use it.

Good Morning!

Gotta run...

However... No jewelry, although I keep toying with getting my ears piereced.  Well, one of them at least.

As for cologne... I usually buy something nice ($$$) every four to five years, and end up using only four or five times within the intervening four to five years.  So...  Closest thing to a cologne I use right is a small spritz of Aveda's "Pure-fume" scent.

My "Meet the Grantmaker" event was a huge success last night and I'm rather wiped out today.

It's Thursday-Friday, Thursday-Friday, Thursday-Friday.

Thursday for TV purposes, but Friday for work purposes.

Last night's "Lost" was a wowzer!

To speculate on where Jack and Kate were, I'd have to say they were doing shifts down in that hole and pushing the button.  Why would they be there?  Because Locke and Hurley and Sayid were up above.

I'm not happy with the person who died.  If I'd had my druthers, I'd rather have had my druthers.

I'm at work, so it's Thursday.

It's not a happy Thursday, no.  I don't feel well. If tomorrow were not a holiday (VETERANS DAY), I'd have stayed home.

As it was, I was out of bed just after 5:30 a.m.  I could breathe all right.  But my head ached (sinus headache).  I performed my daily ablutions, dressed and had a leisurely drive in.  It's always great to be on the road when your fellow travelers aren't all driving like they were supposed to be at work 15 minutes ago.

Speaking of fellow travelers, I am honored to be among the lot of you.

We don't all chat individually, and I know I get on some nerves, but hopefully we all get something positive from one another.

Good morning all...
Today will be a day in which I will curl up on the couch like so much fish and do some reading.  I'm in the final quarter of War and Peace and I'm determined to get a good chunk read today.  Also, yesterday was an extremely craptastic day, and it usually takes me an entire day to recover from such a craptastic day.  The festivities here, however, raised my spirits considerably.  I was in such a bad mood yesterday that I actually snapped at the poor assistant at work, and then I apologized for being SASSY.  She gave me a hug and forgave me, so that was nice.

Then I got the scary news from a dear friend in DC that another friend of ours is currently in Jordan... this was yesterday afternoon.  So on top of having such a craptastic day, I got that news, and then had to go take a stupid word processing test at a law firm while I still hadn't heard anything about the friend, and I did poorly on the test because I just could not concentrate.  I did manage to pass.  When I got home, however, there was a message on the machine saying that said friend is fine and dandy, had called her mother to report that she was not among the dead and in fact is staying at an unaffected hotel.  Thank God.

For obvious reasons (i.e. allergic sensitivities), I don't wear colognes, although there was a time when I loved colognes.  In truth, I can tolerate light applications...on myself and others.  Unfortunately, I often encounter folks who splash it on!

My favorite cologne of all time:  Nine Flags -- Brazil -- Aromatic Tabac.  It was truly sassy.  I loved smelling it on me.  Others seemed to appreciate it, as well.

I used to wear a gold chain and a gold puzzle ring.  But...they weighed me down.  During a financial drought (just after I retired from the Navy and before I was employed by the County of Alameda), I chose to sell them rather than cash-out anything else.

It worked out well, I don't miss the jewelry.  And besides, why gild the lily?!!!

:D

I wear a watch on rare occasions.  Normally, I trust my inner clock.

I don't wear jewelry. I used to wear a watch and a ring, but I've even abandoned wearing those.

I have a large collection of colognes - most of them of the cheap persuasion. I only use 2 or 3, depending on the season and the occassion. I have very fond memories of Drakkar Noir. Every time I smell it I'm reminded of someone who was once very dear to me.

Currently I wear Burberry Brit for Men, Very Sexy for Him by Victoria's Secret, Nomad from Crabtree & Evelyn and an Eau de Toilette from L'Occitane en Provence.

THE COLOR PURPLE last night was quite good, and I noticed a few subtle changes here and there since last week. LaChanze was in very good voice last night and I agree with Ben - the woman playing Sophia is my first pick for a Best Featured Actress in a Musical nomination. She's wonderful.

And now, I have to get some work done...

I also have an original Mickey Mouse tie clip from the original Mickey Mouse Club. I got it sometime in the late 50s. I like to wear it and see if people notice.

Lucky, lucky, lucky.  I would LOVE to still have my Hopalong Cassidy watch.  I don't have a clue what happened to it.

I'd like to think my mother socked it away somewhere, but I think she would have let me know about it by now.

So....treasure that watch, Ben.

Perfume:  I must start by saying that people wear too much friggin perfume.  It's not supposed to choke you.  It's supposed to waft lightly in front of one's nose as you sashay down the hallway, leaving a lovely wake behind you.  If people are gagging and choking in your wake and holding their breath as you approach, YOU ARE WEARING TOO MUCH EFFING PERFUME!!  There, I feel plubetter.

Now, having said that, I have spent considerable time looking for the perfect scent for myself.  I am extremely picky and have a mortal fear of being like one of the people in the abovementioned paragraph.  But I finally found a scent at Victoria's Secret that I LOVE.  It's called Basic Instinct and I happened upon it quite by accident.  It's perfect for me, as it captures my sweet, domestic side and also my wild, SASSY side.

Jewelry:  I wear my wedding ring (DH Noel has an identical one, and when we click them together we activate our special powers), sometimes I wear my engagement ring (on the other hand), and sometimes I wear a silver necklace that a former boss gave me.  It has a little square that has my name engraved on it.

Other than that, I am not much of a jewelry person.  I always lose jewelry or don't take good enough care of it.  Generally, I wear the things that mean something to me, and if I happen to have a piece that matches what I'm wearing, I'll throw that on.

I've had little side conversations with two co-workers about their perfumes.

They each wear different ones, and most don't bother me.  But each has worn something that causes my eyes to water and my sinuses to clog.

I explained to them that their perfume (that day) contained some ingredient that was harmful to me, and I asked them to please be understanding and not be offended when I distanced myself from them and excused myself from any meetings we might mutually attend.  Also, I've asked them to take alternate routes in the office to avoid passing my desk.

I asked this of them nicely, and in some obvious physical distress. Both were very apologetic, mindful of my needs that day and neither has worn that particular scent to work since.

I have also stopped an elevator and gotten off as quickly as possible because of someone's perfume.  Loud applications of cologne/perfurme in an elevator is as inexcusable as someone's cell phone conversation in an elevator.

(And when such a conversation takes place, I talk more loudly, sing a song, sneeze or have a coughing fit just to "annoy" the person who presumed everyone had to "shush" because of the call).

I'd like to say thanks to those of you who offered rental suggestions for me yesterday.

Also, to those of you who keep up the spoiler space for LOST, thank you very much for doing that.  I just ordered season one from netflix, so anything is a spoiler for me.  If I see the word LOST in anyone's post, I skip it, and it's great if there's a spoiler space before any huge plot details are disclosed.  This summer I caught a couple episodes, very close to the beginning, and I got hooked, so I decided to rent the whole season.   Oh boy, I can't wait!

Good morning!

I slept well, but for some reason, I woke up at 6:40 and knew that was it for sleep, so I got up and went out to get the newspaper. Lo and behold, drizzle! 30 days since the last rain came some more!

As I sit here now at 11 a.m., there is not a cloud in the sky and the wet streets from pre-dawn are now dry. Had I not gotten up so early, I might never have known we had any rain at all.

The temperatures have dropped, however. No more 80 degree weather for us. High today is only to be 63. In other words, November is REALLY here!

Since I had such an early morning, I went ahead and watched VERONICA MARS this morning. A couple of the references to last season had me momentarily puzzled, so thankfully I was able to rewind the DVR to the spot and watch certain things over again to make sure I knew who the people were who were talking or being talked about. This show as A LOT of characters, and not all of them are alive any more.

Also had time to watch last night's LAW & ORDER, a melancholy case involving a woman who miscarried her own baby and the extent she went to to get another new born infant to keep her husband from leaving her. Due to people's lies, the case kept getting more and more complex. By the end, the true story seemed fairly obvious but could anyone REALLY be certain? If I had been on that jury, I'm not sure I could have eliminated my reasonable doubt.

TOD - I've never been much of a jewelry person.  In my current line of work, it's simply impractical.  I wash my hands an average of 20 times a day, so a watch would be ruined.  I constantly have small babies in my arms or on my lap, which means any bracelets or necklaces would be fair game for little wandering hands.
I used to wear a small gold carved band from my mother.  She and my sister both have identical ones.  I also have an amethyst ring that I like.  Unfortunately, since my weight loss a few years ago, none of my old rings fit.  So I am now just sans jewelry.

Scent.  After years of trying to find a scent that worked for me, I've found a "cold weather" one.  It's Winter Candy Apple by Bath and Body Works.  I now stock up on it each winter, because it's a seasonal one for them.  But the warmth of it only works in colder weather...so I've yet to find a Spring/Summer one.  Even the Winter Candy Apple one I only wear very rarely.  Little children are often affected by scents, so we don't wear them at work.  And more to the point, I'm too lazy to remember that often :)

I think I mentioned this before, but I once worked in a smallish office space with a woman who literally bathed herself with Obsession every day.  I used to like that scent but after spending a few weeks' time in close proximity wit this woman it came to make me want to gag.  Even after she left to work in another area, her desk and chair retained the scent for months afterwards.

I wear no jewelry. I have a couple of watches, but not working now, I have no need to wear them. When I'm on vacation I will wear a watch if I need to know certain times to meet up with folks.

I have my dad's wedding ring and also a diamond ring that he left me. I have them, but I don't wear them. I have worn the wedding ring in shows where my character had to be married. Otherwise, it stays in my jewelry box.

I think Obsession is the most choking perfume/cologne ever invented. It is WAY too heavy in aroma for my nose to take.

I have a fairly large collection of colognes but I rarely wear them except on very special occasions. My favorites are CK One, Drakkar, and Gray Flannel.

I have to say that I was not upset at all by the identity of the person who died last night on LOST. Not really LOST spoilers, but maybe kind of department:

We were pleasantly surprised (so to speak) about the dear departed on Lost.  DS Betsy only started watching regularly this year, so I have been "catching her up", but I was convinced up until the denouement it was going to be either the blonde or brunette of the "new" castaways.   I also thought it was great that for the first time more than one person at a time heard the whispers, and more than one person at a time saw Walt.  And the new "relationship" developed in the closing seconds promises to be interesting, to say the least.  Kudos to the Lost writing team for avoiding all the cliche-ridden pitfalls that have ruined Desperate Housewives for us this year.

I agree about Obesession. Too heavy a scent for my personal taste. I used to have a bottle of it and it took FOREVER to use it all up. A little spritz'll more than do ya.

I might be in the minority about this, but CK One is too sweet for me. I have distinct memories of a guy I used to wait tables with  who would go outside to smoke (cigarettes or otherwise) and then would bathe himself in CK One (this was right after it came out) and make all of us sick to our stomachs when he came back inside. Since then, CK One has turned my stomach.

Isn't it weird how we retain those sense memories over the years? Any time I smell Polo I think of my dad and anytime I smell Old Spice I think of my grandpa. My maternal grandmother has always worn White Shoulders, while I honestly can't remember what scent my Granny wears. I remember she had an awful lot of perfume bottles, but very few of them had been used...

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....yes.  That IS going to be interesting.

Angry Hispanic woman is named Ana-Lucia Cortez (Michelle Rodriguez).

I was very tired last night and had to record "Invasion," which I will watch this evening, either before "Survivor" or later (maybe even tomorrow).  Will also record "Smallville" and "Everwood" tonight as I'll be watching "CSI" when the latter show is on.

Thursdays are VERY busy at my house, electronics-wise.

Yes, Thursday is full of choices for me, too, but I've eliminated one of them. No more NIGHT STALKER for me. However, I have added SMALLVILLE to the 8 p.m. hour rather than waiting for reruns like I did last year.

A bit of Hollywood lore you may not have ever heard:

Before Zizi Jeanmaire was plucked off the ballet stages of Paris to star in "Hans Christian Andersen," the part was originally to have been a swimmer (who would have inspired the story of "The Little Mermaid").  The director had found a wonderful swimmer named Plu Plu AuPair to play the role, but she was replaced when it was discovered she was unable to dogpaddle.

Speaking of SMALLVILLE, I read at TV GUIDE yesterday that discussions are seriously underway for that AQUAMAN spin-off I felt sure was going to happen after the smashing debut of the character earlier this season on SMALLVILLE. He will fit right into the young female demographic the WB cherishes so much.

It's a darned shame Plu Plu had to leave the film.  As it is, Hans has no love interest outside of Peter.

While this may be a nod toward some truth or other, it makes the movie a bit cloying for me.

A watch from Wal-Mart with NUMBERS and a black band.

CANOE and sometimes COOL WATER.

I also have a ring that the actor who played PIPPIN wore in the show, but then afterwards decided he didn't want it anymore.  He was going to throw it away, but since I was standing there, I said I want it.  The only ring I have worn in YEARS and YEARS.  Because I liked the show we did.

Tonight we are seeing GODSPELL with some signing, so hopefully I can wipe that AWFUL movie out of my brain.  Oh my.

Didn't watch LOST last night.  I watched "THE 7 FACES OF DR LAO" - and...well....I thought Tony Randall did a very nice job.  Whew!  Maybe I just don't like him when he is playing a character that seems to reflect his OWN personality!

Cillaliz our idea of fun is not hanging out at video stores.  NetFlix is great and convenient.  Having a queue is great.  How often have you wanted to see a movie and then forgotten about it.  Now we just leave those movies, even before they are out on a DVD, in our queue and eventually we get them.

TPunk thanks for the cats link.

I'm up, I'm up.

I have never worn jewelry with the following exceptions:

For a very short time, I liked those big ugly watches that had every kind of doo-dad on them - watch, chronometer (is that right?), stop watch, etc. and they lit up.  I bought one, wore it twice, and didn't like having it on my wrist and that was that.

Once upon a time in a galaxy far away, I was married - I wore my wedding ring for the first year, but then stopped because I didn't like feeling it on my finger.

Back in 1966, I bought a beautiful ring with an opal.  The opal was the single most gorgeous opal I've ever seen, before or since - just alive inside.  I wore that ring on the fourth finger of my right hand until 1980, when I lost it doing the CBS pilot I did with George Kennedy.  I'm sure you can see it on my finger in more than a couple of my TV appearences.

So, my favorite gem is the opal.

I've been wearing the same cologne since the late '70s - Jovan Musk - it is MY scent.

Speaking of that, who can guess what this line is from:  "Don't you think it's common to smell of ourselves?"

LOST SPOILERS.

I have to say that I was not upset at all by the identity of the person who died last night on LOST. I had nothing against this person, but I have not retained much interest in this person's story since the major events of last season which involved him/her. If I had had a choice of the major adult cast members, this person would have been my choice.

The funny thing is that I did not really care about the person who was lost until last night's show.  Her backstory was more interesting than before. And her relationship with Sayid finally meant something to me. So i was actually sad that she was killed.

I hope Sayid beats the new woman with a stick.  What kinds of idiot shoots someone without seeing who it is first. Totally stupid. But very sad.

I made the most incredible dish last night that I wanted to share.
I used hamburger meat instead of pork and i used more cranberry sauce than they said to use (i would also recommend using more sauce to dunk the balls into after they are cooked).

This was SO good. I had to wrap up the leftovers to bring to my sis, and I didn't want to! :)

Stuffing Balls

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prep: 25 min
Ready In: 45 min
Serves: 8

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   1 lb. ground pork

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 pkg. (120 g) STOVE TOP Stuffing Mix for Chicken

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   3/4 cup cranberry sauce

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   1 egg, lightly beaten

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   2 Tbsp. butter, melted

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PREHEAT oven to 325°F. Cook pork in large skillet until no longer pink; drain. Place in large bowl. Add dry stuffing mix; mix well. Add 1 cup water, cranberry sauce and egg; mix until well blended.

SHAPE mixture into 16 balls. Place in single layer on foil-covered baking sheet; brush evenly with butter.

BAKE 20 min. or until golden brown and cooked through (160°F).

Make-Ahead
Prepare (without baking) and freeze these savoury stuffing balls up to a month before you need them. Thaw in refrigerator when needed, and bake as directed.

I always wear a watch (could not live without one).

I usually wear earrings when i go out on the weekends.

I sometimes wear rings. I have a very nice 4 diamond anniversary band from my grandmother. I also have a ruby ring.  And a bunch of Guess rings.

Unfortunately my ring finger is quite small (size 5). So I have to wear most of the Guess rings on my index finger (or sometimes even thumb). :(

I really love rubies.  And my newest favorite gemstone is called Diamonelle. I don't own any, but i want it!!!  it's a lab created diamond, that looks exactly like diamonds to the naked eye (even a jeweller would think it was real, unless he used the microscope). This allows you to get a really gorgeous ring for only like $300! :)

Like many here, I'm not much for jewelry...never had any rings or chains or any of that stuff.  My senior year I got the ubiquitious class ring and about two weeks of having it, lost in a softball game during gym class.  It's probably buried some where in the dirt of the ball field still.

I wear a watch and have had a series of them over the years.  But purely as a necessity.  None have ever been expensive (I doubt any have ever cost over 25 bucks), and I only wear it when I'm going out.  When I'm at home...I can't stand to have the thing on my wrist. I must have a leather band; don't like those metal stretchy things.

A friend of mine once gave me a lovely expensive pocket watch, which I tried to get into for awhile, but the first time the chain caught on something that was pretty much it.

I used to love to wear cuff links as a kid...and could probably still get into that, if I had half the energy, since it's jewelry that is not on your skin and doesn't really get in the way of anything, but then I'd have to invest in French cuff shirts and all that.  Too much trouble.

I occasionally will wear a small pin in my lapel.  One is a movie camera on a tripod; the other is a silver shield and sword with the knight's code I wrote for Dragonheart inscribed on the shield.

I do own a tuxedo and have a couple sets of button studs and cuff links for that.

My current colognes are Envy and Coriolan, which is the scent I use the most.  They no longer make it, but The Lovely Wife found someplace on the internet who was closing it out and bought several bottles that will last me for quite sometime.  They all came in great little travel kits...each with a large bottle of cologne; a smaller bottle of cologne, and a body wash.  She got about half dozen of them.  So I'm fixed for awhile.

Queen Mera, his wife, who turned evil because she blamed Aquaman for the death of their infant son.  Aquaman then hooked up with a girl with like powers named Dolphin.  She later wound up marrying Aqualad.  I believe Aquaman is currently back with his no-longer-evil wife.

Okay then that is the preview I saw as well.  It looks like it will basically be a full hour episode recapping what has transpired with all those at the other end of the plane.  So I guess we will see exactly what has happened to them all these weeks.

I think this is a good idea since a bunch of them are now going to be on the show.  And it will help us get more connected to them, so the week after we can see the aftermath of the death.

Excellent vibes and xylophones to the vixdad.

And tell the vixter that I'VE never gotten an e-mail from her!

Back from shipping and doing, not necessarily in that order.

I've been patiently awaiting the arrival of those ashtrays I got on eBay, including the one from my father's restaurant.  I wrote the seller yesterday, and he tells me the damn package was shipped on November 1st!  From California!  It's insured and all, but if these stupid, ignorant, incompetent mofos from the USPS have lost this package I am going to be MIGHTY upset, that much I can tell you.  The seller wouldn't be lying, as he has 100% positive feedback for thousands of transactions.

Back to HOUSE just a minute, DR Jane. Didn't you find out BEFORE you got to the end that the patient couldn't live no matter what they did? And I don't think he actually died during the program as broadcast, did he? He only had a short time to live, right? Or have I already forgotten specifics of the show after two days?

I just read on the VARIETY website that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL have both been pulled from Fox's schedule for the remainder of the November sweeps.

ARRESTED's episode order has been cut from 22 episodes to just 13 and KITCHEN's producers have been told the show will not be picked up for the full season. They may be back to air their remaining episodes starting in December, but that hasn't been determined yet.

Looks like the handwriting is on the wall for both shows.

TOD:

I was never much of a jewelry person, except in my plastic-hippie sixties youth.  I did buy my high-school class ring, and then my fingers grew fatter, and a few years later I had to have a jewler cut it off.  The ring, not the finger.

My Joe is a Gold person, being Italian, and has quite a collection of necklaces, bracelets, and rings, which he wears mainly on special occasions.

We both have gold rings on our well-dressed left hands.  (Oh, a Destry reference!)

And I have one simple gold chain that he gave me several years ago, which I wear constantly.

Neither of us is a cologne person.  I must agree with those who say that Americans simply do not know how to wear purfume.  The idea of "a hint" seems foreign to most.  Our doctor's office actually has a sign posted asking people not to wear purfume when they visit because of the offense and actually physical distress it can cause some patients in the waiting room.

On occasion, I would like to say to some of the worst offenders, "Okay, I've smelled it.  Now can you turn it off, please?"

Based on my past language studies, I'll give this one a go:

Zaftig: Juicy, plump
Buxom: She of the full bosom
Nubile: Weddable; a beautiful girl

Now, the zaftig definition above is what I'm finding most people feel about the word, and that it doesn't imply a large, nice pair of breasts.  I've never ascribed juicy and/or plump to zaftig, but that is what most people and the dictionary say.

Buxom, interestingly, does mean a full bosom, but it also means juicy and/or plump according to Webster's.  Who knew?

Nubile - again, my definition would be a comely young lass ready to be randy.  But, it does mean weddable, too, which I would never ascribe to that word.

The reason for all this is that there is a repeated line in my play - a beautiful, somewhat zaftig young woman - and the line describes the character Tammy Minoff is playing.  No prob with the beautiful part - but the zaftig has become most controversial.  I love the word, and I certainly know what I meant for it to mean - that the character has a nice full set of boobs, which Miss Minoff definitely has.  But others are confounded by the use of the word, and they momentarily get taken out of the play because they're trying to figure out why someone would describe Tammy as juicy and/or plump.  So, I thought about changing it to buxom, but I'm sorry, if buxom shares the same dictionary meaning, then why shouldn't I use zaftig if I'm going to use buxom.  I also don't like the word nearly as well.

Today I came up with nubile, a word I also love and hadn't thought of before.  When I hear that word, it instantly conjures up a young gal with a great figure.  It would never occur to me that it also means "weddable" although even with that odd word tacked on to the meaning, it still kind of works for the play.  What think all of you?

Buxom is definitely a woman with a "nice rack" as Ron puts it.  I always felt zaftig meant more than just a nice rack...it could mean hippy as well...well-endowed in most areas.  Ample, even fleshy, but not necessarily fat...Anita Ekberg, Diana Dors, Jayne Mansfield, even Sophie Loren could qualify.  Zaftig beauty was sort of typified by the fifties ideal woman.

Nubile, I believe is always applied to a young woman of a marriageable age; having to do with marriage or of the age to be married, which I suppose means mature enough to be wedded and bedded and bear children.  Not necessarily in that order.

SPOILER ALERT -- re: "Lost"

After having read a few items on the internet about last night's show, why are we presuming that Shannon is dead but that Sawyer isn't?

Frankly, I agree with DR Jennifer about last night's back story.  Shannon became a very appealing and warm character for me after seeing what she'd been through.  It seems MEAN to have offed her after revealing her to us in such detail.

Well Sawyer is more popular that Shannon.  Rumors have it she wanted to leave.  She was shot and seemingly died in Sayid's arms.  I think that people involved with the show mentioned it was a woman who would die (at the hands of another castmember).

Yes, Shannon's backstory made her much more appealing. But I think that was the point.  The reason we were touched by the final scenes are because of Sayid saying he loved her, and the troubles with her stepmom. I think the ending of the show was much more powerful because of the backstory that was told last night.

I am curious though if most viewers saw Jack passing her in the hospital. And if we are supposed to know that Jack saved his future wife and left Shannon's dad to die on that hospital table. I think it is totally fascinating how everything is related.

BK, I agree that "zaftig" is confusing and inappropriate when applied to Ms. Minoff.  As a person who could be described as "zaftig", I've always felt that it was a euphemism for "fat"; but that's just my issue.  Same with "Rubenesque", "thick", and "plus-sized".  Ick.  Nubile, however, implies that you want to bang her.  Forgive my bluntness, those of you with virgin ears.  Buxom just means big boobs.

The problem is "zaftig" and "buxom" have been co-opted (often by personal ads) as nice euphemisms for ladies who lean towards the large, so that probably colors a lot of people's opinions.

I wear a watch everyday. A citizen eco-drive. It's got a little solar cell so it never needs a battery- just a little sun now and then.

I have a few necklaces I like and wear occasionally. I also have a number of rings that I like, but my fingers tend to change sizes as the day wears on, so they get very uncomfortable. Needless to say i don't wear them much.

My favorite ring is a ruby and pearl ring my grandmother passed on to me. The last time I saw her alive, she wasn't sick at the time, but she told me she was ready to join my grandfather and asked if I liked the ring because she wanted me to have it when she died.  It was a strange but comforting conversation.  I treasure that ring.

TOD - My favorite rings are my engagement and wedding rings, which I've worn continually now for almost 25 years.  The only time  I take them off is when I smoosh meat loaf with my hands.  DH Richard has bought me a couple of other rings which I wear, one at a time, on my right hand.  One of my favorites is 3 stones - amethyst between 2 blue topaz, colors I wear a lot.  Occasionally, depending on the clothes I'm wearing, I'll wear the pink cameo ring that my aunt had made for me for high school graduation from a cameo that belonged to my grandmother (who died before my parents met).

I have 2 watches that have multiple interchangeable bezels and one of those has multi-colored interchangeable bands.  So I can customize the color of my watch to match my wardrobe.

My ears are pierced, so I wear earrings every day - small ones that don't interfere with the phone, which is a big part of my job.  One Christmas I told DH that I wanted purple earrings and got amethysts surrounded with little diamonds - I love those!  After their father died, Richard and his brother took the 4 diamonds from his watch and had earrings made for me and my sister-in-law.  I got mine for my birthday, but my s-i-l's were wrapped and under the Christmas tree when their house was broken into.  The earrings were stolen.

One thing I've started doing, since working on fundraising with nonprofits, is to wear something philanthropic whenever possible.  Some days it's my Mamma Mia Angel pin (thanks, DR Jose), sometimes one of those rubber wrist bands (pink for breast cancer, blue for "Libraries Matter").  I have a couple of Lucinda (http://www.lucinda.com) pins that were both fundraisers for literacy.  One of my favorite nonprofits, Clothes That Work (http://www.clothesthatwork.org) sells a pin that I like to wear, too.

As for the official Topic of the Day:

I wear a watch...either my MP3 player watch that I got on eBay from England or my Timex Indiglo Expedition (European edition, also from eBay) that I wear when I usher so that I can see what time it is in the dark...sometimes you just need to know. ;)

When I went to buy my college class ring (for Western Washington University), I looked through the brochures and really couldn't find anything that I liked.  I knew that I didn't want the "traditional" type ring (I'd gotten that for high school), but I wasn't impressed with anything that they had available.  So, just to make a decision, I decided on this particular ring that was flat on the top with that had a nice design and a stone in it.  But it turned out that not only was it a woman's style (which really didn't bother me), but it was white gold with a real diamond and cost over $300!  There was no way that I could afford it, but as soon as the dealer told me that (and I realized that I couldn't get it), I instantly really wanted it and decided that it was the only one that I wanted. :( So, I looked through the selections some more and found a less expensive ring that was similar (flat top with a design but no stone) and I got it for about $100 or so.  I really like it and am glad that I did get it. :) I used to wear it regularly, but I just stopped wearing it a few years ago.  No reason.

I only have my left earlobe pierced and I have a small silver hoop for an earring.  I have several other earrings and studs, but I don't wear them regularly.

The only other piece of jewelry that I own/wear is an Until There's a Cure (http://www.utac.org/) bracelet.  I got it in 1996 when I did an A.I.D.S. benefit in Tacoma and wore it for a while but I didn't start wearing it regularly in early 1997.  I've been wearing it ever since.

Nothing like a full day of rehearsal to tire oneself out.  But at least it's a good tired.  -And nothing like a good dinner to refresh oneself - yellowfin tuna in a red Thai curry sauce over brown basmati rice with a side of steamed broccoli (organic too!).  All very healthy and dietetic.  Which is a good thing since I've been trying to be healthy and dietetic the past couple of days.  -I've actually had no sugar or flour the past two days.  Yes, it is - and could be - easy to make "excuses" and go ahead and indulge, but I'm also digging the challenge of resisting the not-so-good stuff right now.

*And I'm also make sure I actually eat the groceries I bought last night before they go bad - which is what usually happens.

-Am I babbling?  I guess I am.  Ah, well...  In any case...

LOST talk ahead-

As for next week's episode:  I was thinking that they - the producers of "Lost" - were going to go ahead and more or less start the series all over again, but this time focus on the "others".  And then after a couple of episodes, the show would pick up where they left off last night.  They had mentioned a couple of things that had happened to them since they had been on the island, and I'm guessing they're going to show those events.  -Well, I think that would be cool.

And does anyone else think that Sayid and Ana-Lucia actually might know one another already?  I sensed a look of "Oh, it's you?!?!?" on Sayid's face during the closing moments of the show.

I like wearing a watch.  I went through a phase a couple of years ago where I sort of collected different styles of watches.  And I also have a collection of Mickey Mouse-themed watches.  Alas, the watch I currently wear is one of those Timex Ironman deals.  All the other watches I've bought over the past couple of years are in a box in my storage unit.  And they all need new batteries too.

;)

However, I have lost a few watches over the years due to leaving them on pianos since I usually take my watch off when I'm playing.  I also lost my high school class ring that way.  :(

I’m allergic to most perfumes so I try to be subtle with my Shalimar eau de toilette which has a lighter scent than the perfume.  I spray a bit on my wrists than rub it on the front of my hair.  When my hair falls in my face I can smell the Shalimar and when other perfumes make me sick I can calm my senses with my wrists.

My favorite bauble, bangle or bead is a "vintage"  Pulsar watch, which TPunk's dad passed on to me. It was quite a thing in its day, but kind of a joke now. Pulsars could not permanently display the time. It is blank until you press the button to light up the time. So people often think it is some kind of weird bracelet. Mine needs a new battery.

My favorite piece of jewelry is the gold heart Keith gave me when we were eighteen. It has a tiny ruby and raised lettering that reads “I’ll love you as long as I live, and live as long as I love you.

The heart is also special since Keith purchased it from a jeweler, Joseph Adler, I had known since I was very young.  He and his wife were patients of my father.  Mrs. Adler had a number on her arm from a concentration camp.  They were wonderful, kind people and I would often stop in to visit them.  I’m so glad I wanted Keith to meet them. :)

A little more venting about the grant - wouldn't you think a PR "expert" would recognize the significance of the fact that our senior US senator, who has roots in one of the counties participating in our project, serves on the appropriations committee for the funding federal agency to which we were applying?  As far as I can tell, said PR "expert" didn't even contact a staffer in said Senator's office or send a heads-up copy of our proposal with a cover letter.  Now, I'm not a very politically savvy person, but, DUH, I could have figured that one out.

I bought the 2 disc edition of Charlie and the Charlie Factory. One of the items was a documentary on Roald Dahl.

The documentary was a white wash of the man.

No where do they mention that he was married to actress Patricia Neal.
No where do they mention that one of his children died at the age of 7.
No where do they mention that he was anti-semetic.
No where do they mention do they mention that he left Patricia Neal for her best friend.
No where do they mention do they mention his other writings like Lamb to the Slaughter.
No where do they mention that he wrote the Bond film You Only Live Twice.
No where do they mention that he wrote the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Jane, this is a very sweet story and reminds me that one of my favorite antiques experts, Frank Farmer Loomis, recommends writing down such stories to preserve the provinence of pieces as they're handed down.  Not to suggest that your gold heart is an antique yet  ;D, but someday it will be.

TOD: I don't wear terribly much jewelry because as someone else mentioned earlier, I am very hard on it.  I break it, lose it, scratch it.  But I do have a few low maintenance pieces I wear every day: a silver thumb ring, small siver earrings and of course my nose ring and belly button ring.

I've also been given some lovely jewelry over the last few years.  (Rodzinski has excellent taste) A few of my favorites are a grey pearl and silver choker, a pink enamel flower ring trimmed with crystals, and a silver pendant inset with a pearl and garnet (my birthstone).  The pendant used to be one of a set of earrings given to me on my birthday.  Please see above if you haven't yet figured out why it is now a pendant. :)

I finished the evening by watching tonight's WILL & GRACE. Again, like ALIAS, a moderately better episode than the last couple, but the laughs were still pretty feeble. Harry Connick, Jr. returned as Grace's ex-husband Leo and there was still some attraction there.

One wonders how the writers are going to handle this potential for the two of them to reunite. Since this is the final season, they might want to have Grace's messy love life at least set off on a potentially stable path.

But what for Will? At least there wasn't any indication this week that the writers are considering pairing Will and Jack for the end of the series. For the last several episodes, there have been clues to that effect, and if it happens, it will NOT make me a happy camper.

The problem with buxom (IF there's a problem with buxom) is that the dictionary definition also says "plump."

Dear reader Joy's definition of nubile (at least in today's vernacular) as young, attractive, and juicy, completely applies to the character in my play and Miss Minoff who will be playing said character.  So, nubile it is.  I ran that by Tammy and her mother and they both liked it very much.  So, I'll be changing it in the script tomorrow.

But before I go...

"Nubile" has always had a very "young" connotation to me.  And I've usually heard it applied to young women who have just entered adolescence, have just "blossomed".  Consequently, it can also be a bit smarmy depending on the situation.

Well... That's my experience with the word.
