Title: ROLLERCOASTER
Post by: bk on November 15, 2005, 12:10:16 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like a rollercoaster, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently on the rollercowster.

If money were no object I would live in London at least five months out of the year in a house or large flat on the Thames in the West End, walkable to all the theatres.  I would not even think of driving there, but I might have a chauffeur (since money's no object) tool me around in a Jaguar.  The rest of the time I'd live in my house in Kentucky and maybe keep a condo or townhouse or loft in LA.

I would definitely have an apartment on Central Park West on a high floor with a faboo view of the city.

I'd buy my current house, which I really like, even though I'm not in a buying frame of mind.

I'd have a flat in London, too, even though I've never been there - I know I'd love it.

And I'd have a little apartment in Santa Monica for weekend visits (well, I HAD an apartment there, five seconds from the beach, in a highrise, rent-controlled).  When I moved back to the Valley I gave it up.  That was the stupidest thing I ever did - they eventually, one year later, paid people fifty grand to move out.  Had I stayed and not taken the 50K, I'd be paying app. $800 for a nice one bedroom with a lovely view of the ocean.

I've always wanted to have one of those sporty Mercedes convertibles, so I'd just get me one of them.  In NY, I'd be like Pogue - chauffeur me everywhere.

If money were no object, I would love to have a place in New York City and London.  Theater, you know. ;D I wouldn't want any place that's too big.  Even if money wasn't a concern, I just don't want to live in a large place...at least, that's how I feel right now when money is a concern. ;)

As for a car, I would want some sort of European car.  My first car was a 1976 Volkswagon Super Beetle, then I had a 1989 Subaru Justy and now I have a 1998 Ford Escort.  So, it's gone around and it's time for another German car. :) I would also like it have very good gas mileage...because it should.

Money no object:
I would live in Hampstead, London for part of the year.

I'm not that interested in cars so I'd rather have one that was looked after by someone else!

A holiday home on the south Island of New Zealand would also be a possible choice.

I like other town and cities like New York, Copenhagen, Stolkholm, Prague, Vienna and Perth but just as places to visit.

TOD:

NYC. Central Park West overlooking the park. (just like bk) and I would not keep a car. I'd walk or cab it.

LA

Somewhere above the smog. A nice cottage with a pool. And a fuel efficient car with a computer direction guide (whose name totally escapes me for the moment) because I am sure I will
a) Get Lost
b) Need to find a shorter route to where I need to go.
c) So if I am caught in traffic I can find an alternate route.

Good morning, all!  I'm quite sleepy this morning and I blame the weather and DRJose.  Around 10:50 last night, DRJoey called to tell me how his TWO CITIES day went, and it was quite an exciting one for him.  His flight was delayed until 12:30, so I asked him to call me from LaGuardia to let me know he was safely there in a taxi, and he called me around 12:15 am to tell me the flight was on schedule and he was heading out.  He still had a two-hour flight and a 90-minute drive to college, so he most likely wasn't relaxing before 3 am EST, since Iniana's an hour behind.

I had my usual evening:  drawing notes for Mario, chilling out and catching up on the day's mail: last night was Opera News and New York Magazine.

TOD:  London and Manhattan, no car.

TOD:

In NYC, I'd want Jill Clayburgh's second apartment (the one with the little garden) from AN UNMARRIED WOMAN.

Then I'd want a house on the Hudson somewhere between Poughkeepsie and Kingston.

Then I want a ranch in Montana--big blue sky, wide open spaces.

Then I want Linda Ronstadt's old Pacific Heights house in San Francisco.

Then I want a beach house in Maui nearby the beach where they film LOST.

Cars?  I'd like a 1990 Miata that was re-built to fit my long legs.

A bigger place in New York, and flats in London, Paris, San Francisco and a cottage in Honfleur. Four of these cities are places where one does not need an automobile so I would not have one. Since money is no object I would be able to hire a car whenever I needed one.

Michael Shayne, Chitty is OK. It's not great, but I don't think it's the dog most others do. I think Jan Maxwell (the Baroness) is still in the show but Marc Kudish is no longer in the cast. He's doing See What I Wanna See, the new Michael John La Cuisa piece at the Public. As Matt said, they (Jan Maxwell and Marc Kudish as the Baron and Baroness) were the standouts in the show. If you miss it, you won't regret it but if you see it, you might like it. Who knows.

In My Life is not a classic bomb. It's bad, no question about it but it's not Carrie bad or Suzanne Somers bad. It's just stupid bad.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a great choice. Even if you don't love Guettel's work I think you would enjoy Light in the Piazza. It's at the TKTS booth, as is Chitty and Scoundrels. I forget what other show you mentioned in last night's post but

I would have a big, old 1920s home in one of the ritzy neighborhoods in Portland, and a 1959 Chevy Impala 4-door to get me around town.

I would have a lovely old home in the Hollywood Hills with someone to drive me around.

And a big apartment in Manhattan. I would just take cabs when there.

Money no object:

I'd have an estate in Aiken County, South Carolina.  A few hundred acres, minimum.  I'd have a sprawling home, with huge verandahs.  The interior would be all climate-controlled.  I'd have inglenooks near the front and rear entrances for those cold winter days they have.  I'd have a huge green house for year-round vegetables.  I'd plant at least 20 acres each spring (or allow it to be planted and share the harvest).  I'd have an indoor gym with infinity pool; and there would be a large outdoor pool surrounded by parts of the house.
The kitchen would be state-of-the-art, plus it would have a brick wood-burning oven for the baking of bread and cooking of pizzas!!

I'd have a beachhouse somewhere on the SC coast, preferably near Beaufort SC.

I'd have a nice NYC apartment in The Dakota.

I'd have a modest cliffside villa on Capri off the coast of Naples, Italy.

And I am certain I'd be looking for a nice flat somewhere in London...

I see that ABC has canceled NIGHT STALKER. I gave up on the show a couple of weeks ago.

The producer made a couple of huge mistakes. He cast the part of Carl Kolchak too young and too dour. He also saddled him with a doubting accomplice who week after week questioned his suspicions about the supernatural.

One could understand her doubting such phenomena once or twice, but it became absurd for her to ALWAYS be the voice of dissention and then be proven wrong during the course of the show. Her presence became a HUGE irritation, and truly that character became the reason I gave up on the show.

Of course, tonight is one of those evenings where I have three/four shows that I enjoy all coming on at the same time: HOUSE, MY NAME IS EARL/THE OFFICE, and SUPERNATURAL.

Three nights a week I have this problem now. WB has been rerunning SUPERNATURAL on Sunday, so I could postpone watching it, but the minute I'd do that, they'd change the schedule and pull the show off that night.

BTW, those of you who were fans of CLOSE TO HOME and distressed when CBS moved it to Friday. If last week is any indication, Friday IS going to be its permanent home. It won its time slot (finished third on Tuesdays) and garnered its biggest-ever audience coming after GHOST WHISPERER, so if you like the show, get used to its being there.

Tonight's ratings for THRESHOLD in the 10 p.m. time slot will be VERY interesting.

Well I think I would like to live in Ron's South Carolina house when he wasn't using it... it sounds faboo!!

I have always wanted a big Victorian house the kind with three floors.... two for living in and the entire top floor just a big attic and of course with a big finished  basement as well.

I want fireplaces in every room and a big wrap around porch and lots of land a few acres as least so we can have horses.  I would probably want this to be on the North Shore of Long Island.

and of course we also need nice apartments in NYC and London for the theatre and San Francisco where I have never been but where I have always wanted to go.

And also a nice warm house in Banth. Alberta, Canada...

I would like a nice apartment on the upper east side in New York City - or a suite ALWAYS ready for me at the Plaza!  That might be better!  ;D

A suite at the Dorchester in London, the Ritz in Paris, and the Mark in San Francisco.

My MAIN home would be the Stahl house in the hills of LA, featured in many commmercials and movies....pictured below....the room at the upper right cantilevers out over the Hollywood Hills.

I might like the Ennis House as well.....

I would drive my PT Cruiser all over everywhere.

For vacations - a cabin in the hills of Casey County Kentucky where my father's relatives still live....of course "cabin" is a misnomer for what I want - picture Tanya Tucker's house!  ;D

I woke up at three in the morning, didn't fall back asleep until four, and am now up.  Too damn early.

Will ABC learn from their Night Stalker debacle (can you imagine how costly these failures are) - no, they'll just choose some other TV show to revive because they're so bankrupt of creativity.  Night Stalker was a flop TV series the FIRST time around, even with Darren McGavin.  This time some brilliant exec said, well why don't we do The Night Stalker - sure it was a flop, but we can tart it up and make it look like every other TV show, get some hot young guy to play Kolchak, and the stupid people of America will tune in every week because of our brilliant promos.

I saw one of those promos when watching Alias, and I knew within three seconds it was going to be awful.

Pogue, my late Uncle Charlie had a custom-built 1960 Jaguar that he used to tool around NYC in.  It had cherry-wood in the back and a television and bar built into the back of the front seat (if that makes sense--so that you could drink and watch t.v. if you were in the back seat).  Charlie took me for a drive in the Jag around Manhattan early one Sunday morning when I was a kid, and it was an exhilirating and terrifying experience.  Charlie did not suffer red lights or slow cars lightly--several times he drove up on the sidewalks to get around "obstacles" (you know, like pedestrians crossing the street  ;D).  The cool thing about Charlie is he spoke several languages, including Mandarin Chinese and Russian, fluently, and he stopped in all the ethnic neighborhoods in lower Manhattan and spoke with vendors, etc., who were out on the street in their native tongues.  It is a morning I will never forget.

If I had unlimited funds, I'd have myself a loverly little set-up somewhere on Central Park West with a loverly view of the park, just like everyone else. Or maybe I'd want a place a little closer to the Theatre District. I dunno. I DO know, however, that there'd be a washer/dryer unit in my apartment. No question about it. No more schlepping 6 blocks with 60 lbs. of laundry on my back. Most people would just hire someone to do that for them if they had unlimited funds. Not me - I don't like nobody touchin' my dirty undies.

I'd, of course, have summer homes and winter cottages around the world. Specifically: A loverly cottage home in the British countryside. A cozy cottage in French wine country. A villa in Florence. A flat in Sydney and a cabin in Vermont.

One of the reasons I had a sleepless night was because I just had all my staging images in my head, trying to figure out what to add, what to subtract, and to figure out the big ending when the whole thing turns into counterpoint, with all three different musical parts are sung (and fit) together.

I am surprised that CLOSE TO HOME did so well on Friday.  Not because I don't think that putting it on after GHOST WHISPERER was smart.  But because I'm sure plenty of people did not even know the show had moved nights.  I know at least 3 people who watch the show, and who had no idea it moved.  They really should have kept it on Tuesdays until they could put a note at the bottom DURING the show to say it was moving.

Oh and I did watch last week's GHOST WHISPERER (still my fav new show).  I was not expecting things to go the way they did (with tattoo guy). He was so creepy and dangerous, I thought for sure he would have been different than he was!

Sometimes we look at the new lofts and condos going up in Portland.  It would be nice to have a place near Bryan.  However, if money is no option I might as well stay in the best hotels.

I would love to rent an Italian villa, one that includes a staff to take care of everything.  We would have room for family and friends to visit, take multiple trips and stay until we felt like returning home.

It is an eccentric use of a word not at all "easily reflective" of the intent.

"Live TV" is an event that is aired as it happens.  The state of the viewer is always "live" and it is a redundancy to say you're watching a pre-recorded event "live."  It's also an abomination of the English language.

Watching something "live" in this context is applicable to every "watching" experience.  It's as silly as saying you're watching it "dead" or "comatose".

Maybe clear to you.   ;)

But watching something "live" has always, in my lifetime, meant the event was "live."

One's own state of existence is never referred to in such conversation.

.  It's as silly as saying you're watching it "dead" or "comatose".

When I was a kid and Dad was asleep in his recliner in front of the  (one and only) TV and we kids tried to change the channel he would suddenly arouse from his loud snoring laden slumber declaring "I was watchng that!"

apparently one CAN watch TV while comatose  :D

Yes...they further emphasized the idea that the event was LIVE.  That's exactly the way the network press releases emphasize the nature of the special programs.

It means -- ATTENTION:  THIS SHOW IS BEING PERFORMED LIVE.

As for clues...when a word is being misused, there is no adequate clue to explain it away.

Misused is simply misused.

I watched "The Trouble With Harry" "live" over the weekend.  That and "Nicholas and Alexandra" and "Summertime" -- all "live," "live," "live."

And last night, I was so sleepy I couldn't stay up to watch "Medium" "live" -- so, I "filmed" it.

Today’s topic of discussion: If money were no object, where would you like to live, in what sort of home would you reside, and what sort of car would you want to tool around in?

Oh, even though I've never been, I'd have to give it all up for Paris, not Paris, Illinois, but, PARIS, FRANCE.  Something has always drawn me towards Paree, quite often (as in frequently, not sans parents) my dreams are set there.  Actually, I'd say that close to 95% of my dreams take place in Paris.   ???
Of course, if I were dwelling in Paris, I would have to drive an expensive sports car - perhaps a Lamborghini Murcialago - in red or copper tones.  Then of course, above the age of thirty-seven, I'd be able to ride through Paris in a sports car with the warm wind in my hair.

TOD - Why don't we just buy a building on Central Park West and turn it into an HHW residence?  I'd also like to have a place on a large body of water - ocean, one of the Great Lakes, etc.

Actually, if money had not been an object, I might never have left Ann Arbor 32 years ago.  The vibrancy of a large university community still calls to me, but the climate detracts from its appeal as a retirement destination.  Of course, had I not left Ann Arbor, I would not have met DH Richard or DR elmore (and therefore all you folks here at HHW).

He seems ok... he's been a little short of breath which is what led to his Doctor suggeting a stress test in the first place, but the cardioligist says that while it is "important" to take care of this "soon",  the need is not "critical" and hence he put it on hold until after Thanksgiving so Vixdad could enjoy himself for the holiday,  He'll be going in the morning of the 29th(much vibage and prayers will be requested) for the angiogram and if they deem it necessary they'll do the angioplasty right away, install any necesary "stents" and keep him at least overnight

I meant to mention last night that in a lengthy article in next week's TV GUIDE, it's explained that the 3-D used in next week's show will be used in some sort of paintings that reveal clues to Allison. Much of the episode will not be in 3-D, just the parts in some kind of paintings that will reflect what she's being told to give clues to whatever mystery she'll be trying to unravel.

DR Jane, I guess you and Keith will have to pass the 3D glasses back and forth.  It is a bit weird if two or more people are watching at the same time.

Our TV Guide (Canadian version and still little) came and no 3D glasses.  But on MEDIUM last night it said to get them in Saturday's Globe and Mail (which unfortunately is not the paper most people here get). But I shall go to the newsstand and get it.

Nah.  You can "film" it and watch it "live" at the same time.

That way, one of you can watch with the 3-D glasses "live" while the other does without.  Then, you can replay it and the one who missed the 3-D effect can see it on the second "live" viewing.

"Cookies" is not the usual term in OZ for what we call biscuits. (as they do in the UK and NZ). Thus not a confusion here.  I'm more likely to think of "77 Sunset Strip? and "Kookie" or Dagwood's daughter "Cookie".

Why yes. You could check out either MOVIE STAR NEWS www.moviestarnews.com  (http://www.moviestarnews.com) for the Farley Granger photos. They have some of Robert Cummings but they appear to be later then 1942.

Try Jerry Ohlinger's Movie Material Store for the Robert Cummings photos. http://www.moviematerials.com/ (http://www.moviematerials.com/) or Ebay.

Both stores are in Manhatten (I visited them on my trip). Movie Star News charges 10.00 a still if you go in person, and only $5 if you use the website. Of course if you factor in postage it might even out if you are only buying one photo.

CSI: MIAMI started with a VERY disturbing image - CSI Ryan Wolf being rushed to the hospital with a nail driven right above his right eyelid. Then, the next half hour was a flashback to see how this had happened. Oh, boy, they had every opportunity for Ryan to have his eye exposed to nail guns and other situations where we thought this HAS to be the moment where the injury occurred. But, no! Those were false alarms until we finally got the payoff and saw it happen. Then, the rest of the show went about solving the inital murder and the injury to Ryan.

KISS KISS BANG BANG was wild and wacky fun for part of the way, but the plot was so convoluted and everything (dialogue, scenes) moved at such a rat-ta-tat clip that I found it hard to keep up or to keep the very perplexing mystery sorted in my head.

Downey and Kilmer did well with their roles, but did they honestly think we'd believe Downey and the leading lady (forgotten the actress's name) were the same age? (In flashbacks they were in the same grade in school and played together.) He looked WAY older than she did.

Kilmer seemed to be having the time of his life playing that gay character.

Back from a lovely meeting with the lovely Linda Purl.  I'll be doing for her what I did for Mr. Kevin Spirtas - putting together a new one-person show for her.  I really adore her, and it she's willing to go in new directions and to have fun.  Her former act consisted of mostly standards, and when it was presented for bookers they didn't react well (they liked her, but the show didn't work for them) - she'd heard about Kevin's show, and since we had so much fun doing her album, she called me.  So, I'll be having fun with Linda for the next couple of months.

We have jams, jellies and preserves.  Jello is gelatin is Jello.

Well, if quibbling is going to be the way of all things for this day, the word is spelled "Jell-O" and it's a specific trademarked brand name.  According to www.m-w.com, "Jell-O (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=Jell-O)" is:

Main Entry: Jell-O
Function: trademark
-- used for a gelatin dessert usually with the flavor and color of fruit

Please note that while George is correct about the trademarked name, Kraft Foods uses "jello" without the hyphen (and it could easily have hyphenated it) in the URL for "Jello.com":

MR BISQUE - since you have an assistant who is writing down all of your blocking....

Last summer when I did PIPPIN, I made a word document for each number.  Then if someone in the cast needed it, he/she would email me with the title of the song in the SUBJECT line, and I would reply with the choreography by "cut and paste" - made it simple!

I haven't been there in a long time. I remember they had a Broadway exhibit many original costumes. I wanted to take a closer look at Mary Martin's costume she wore for My Heart Belongs to Daddy. I got to close to it and the alarm went off. Scared the crap out of me.

Title: Re:ROLLERCOASTER

It is an eccentric use of a word not at all "easily reflective" of the intent.

"Live TV" is an event that is aired as it happens.  The state of the viewer is always "live" and it is a redundancy to say you're watching a pre-recorded event "live."  It's also an abomination of the English language.

Watching something "live" in this context is applicable to every "watching" experience.  It's as silly as saying you're watching it "dead" or "comatose".

 :D :D :D :D

So, DRRon, what single word would you suggest DRMatt use instead of "live"?  Not a phrase, which would not be in the spirit of what he was telling us, but a single word that would convey the same sentiment?

Yes, she started the concert with "Those Were The Days" and also did "Blowin in the Wind", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone", "Me and Bobby McGee", "Crimson and Clover", "Turn, Turn, Turn", "If I Were A Carpenter", "Both Sides Now" and ended with "Imagine"

Of course she said she wasn't protesting anything, they were just songs she liked and wanted to have for herself....I don't buy that for a minute, but whatever, the very conservative crowd ate it up and even swayed back and forth with lighters here and there during Imagine. It was quite an interesting site. She sang for 90 minutes. It was great.

Michael Shayne, as Michael Barnum mentioned, you can't really do much research at the Museum of Television and Radio. The database only lists performances which are in the collection. It is not a complete database. It's a good place but it is woefully underfunded. Earlier this year they had to make cutbacks in staff and hours (IIRC). It's a musuem of television and radio but the computer system, even though it's Mac, is old and somewhat decrepit. I am always disappointed that the broadcast and cable television networks don't do more to support this archive. It's in a great building on 52nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues but only because of the efforts of William Paley. If the organization had not had his support I don't know what kind of facility they would have. Even though I don't watch much television anymore I think this kind of archive/museum is an important part of American culture. They should have access to much more material and they should have much more cutting edge technology. Basically, once you find the program you want to watch, you sit in front of a television while a tape is put into a VCR. So much more could be done with DVDs and better computer systems and televisions. Oh, well. It's all a matter of funding and they don't have much other than what Paley left in his will.

I will now step down from my soapbox.

Danise, I will tell Anthony about Bones.

Topic of Today...

I'll buck the trend and say that I'd like one of those spacious loft spaces in SoHo.  Complete with one of those freight type elevators.  Of course, it would also come with a great rooftop area/garden with views into Brooklyn and across the river in Jersey.  And the midtown skyline to the north.

A "winter" house in Syndey - well, two of them.  An apartment in the city, preferably with a great view of Syndey Harbor (the Opera House, Bridge, etc.).  And one along one of the canals (I think they were canals?).

A "standing" room in the Crowne in Melbourne.

And for good measure, a chateau in the Po Valley.

As for a car...  I've never really been into "nice cars".  As long as the vehicle runs, gets good mileage and has a working radio, I'm happy.  A friend of mine has one of those sporty Mercedes convertibles.  It's nice, but I'm still happy with my 1993 Ford Escort Wagon.  -Which is about to hit 220,000 miles!  *And it averaged 42mpg this past weekend on the trip up and back to and from New York City.

Hmm if money were no object. I think I'd still like my home base to be in the North Central part of the country.  Maybe a nice cozy home on a lake close to Minneapolis/St Paul or Chicago. I may even stay in Iowa. I really do love the people here.  I'd have a live in cat sitter for the times I traveled.

I don't think I'd want more than one house.  If money was no object I could stay in fabulous suites in different hotels whenever I traveled and all my stuff could be in one place.
Title: Re:ROLLERCOASTER
Post by: TPunk on November 15, 2005, 07:27:27 PM
Topic of the day:

If money were no object I would buy a brownstone in Park Slope Brooklyn.  Something with a garage or parking spot where I could park my hybrid car for use on the weekends.  I would love to be able to stay within a very close distance to Manhattan and have the luxury of a beautiful park and residential neighborhood.

And then a house in Spain.  I do believe my paternal grandfather's blonde hair and green eyes can be traced back to Spain (he was born in Mexico) and I think that a lovely home in Spain would be a nice way to get in touch with my heritage.  (And a nice way to escape the some of the problems I see with our culture and society...)

And finally, if money truly were no object, I would love to be able to take six months out of each year to travel around the world with Doctors Without Borders or some other like minded organization, providing therapy to families and children in need, doing community organizing, and HIV prevention work.

The color on this non-anamorphic transfeer is very nice, and when Fox redoes this next year with anamorphic enhancement, it should look really wonderful. It's acceptable now but not nearly as good as it could be.

My evening of TV started with BONES. As DR Danise said earlier, the show featured a guy with a cane. The mummification of a body was rather interesting but the list of suspects was pretty narrow for this episode. Not one of the series' best.

Next on my agenda was HOUSE which had an excellent episode with its usual medical mystery of the week but some really excellent comedy in the early sequences and some melodrama later with poor House who's nursing a lingering love for his ex-lover. Sela Ward is a terrific actress, and the two of them bantering back and forth is something to see.

And then LAW & ORDER: SVU featured the still handsome (more rugged now, less pretty boy) Dean Cain as a rapist manipulating the justice system to his own ends. The story lost focus three-fourths of the way through veering into the area of who has the right to decide pulling the plug on a brain dead patient: a husband of a week or a mother. And then, as usual, SVU provided a very neat surprising twist to the story. Love this show!

...During a break today, I happened to notice one of the schedule guides for the AFI Silver Cinema was left on the table on the green room.  In the next two months alone they will be having the following film series:

2005 EU FILM SHOWCASE
THE CINEMA OF LOUIS MALLE
ERNST LUBITSCH, PART 2
HOLIDAY CLASSICS
16TH WASHINGTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL
ERNEST LEHMAN REMEMBERED
THE JIM HENSON COMPANY
CinemAFRICA
CINEMA TROPICAL
MONTGOMERY COLLEGE SERIES
TALK CINEMA

I may try to make it to a few of the Louis Malle showings.  However, I'm most interested in catching "The Sound of Music" and "The King and I" on the big screen.  -Oh, and "A Muppet Christmas Carol" is part of their Holiday series!

:)

www.afi.com/silver

It's a very nice theatre complex, and, thankfully, the people that go to see films there, actually go to see the films.  Not talk on their cell phone or play catch up with their "neighbors" while the movie is running.

No. I found their collection to be very small. You can look for TV shows to watch...but the collection is not what I thought it would be....and looking up ALLISON HAYES I found....nothing!

Thank you. I guess I can look up a few names and see what they have. More interested in dates and production info than watching it.

Would the Lincoln Center Library have any references books for tv?

It's been such a long time  since I've been there and I was a member once long ago so I could spend more time on the vcr.

RE: "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart" - I happened to read today's TV column in the Washington Post, and it's been interesting following the whole "we were not cancelled, we had only planned on season anyway" spin.  -I actually thought it was just going to be for one season anyway for the main reason they've been giving:  With the daily talk show, Martha is just too busy to do another season.

Who knows?

I've been watching the Bonus DVD of my Hitchcock set all evening. Now I'm watching "Rope" and one of my new favorite actors, Mr. Farley Granger. :)

You  should be able to score tickets for AVENUE Q and SCOUNDRELS, both of which are excellent entertainment. And for me, SPELLING BEE was this year's AVENUE Q in terms of an original, delightful musical comedy.

You can bet your bottom (top?) dollar that if Martha's APPRENTICE had scored big in the ratings, she'd be doing another season after the holidays. Fact is, it finished fourth in the time slot and didn't average even 7 million viewers per week. And it's weak, weak ratings have been hurting LAW & ORDER, too, by not providing much of a lead-in audience for it.

All of that talk about "only one season" is merely to save face for Martha and NBC.

I'm sooooo zonked right now.  I am finally two DVDs away from being finished viewing footage.  Today, many VHS tapes were dumped on me, but they're all cued up, so IF I end up using any of them, I'm just transfering the first thirty seconds of whatever's there.  A lot of the VHS tapes are from working actors, but not what we'd call celebs, and I think this thing is going to become very unwieldy if we use it all.  I'd rather less people and slightly longer clips.  My co-director told me he thought it would be fine at ten minutes long - I think not.  That is just too long for an audience to sit watching video in a live show.  So, the longest I'll allow is five minutes, but you're talking at least twenty to thirty people, so that's less than thirty seconds per.  It's really difficult to do, but we shall do our best.

just finished up the Special Features disc of THE SOUND OF MUSIC's 40th anniversary dvd; I was fine until the great-grandchildren of the real Maria & Georg stood up on the Hollywood Bowl's stage and sang "Edelweiss."   :'(
A thought occurred to me with the mention of it being Oscar Hammerstein's final lyrics, as everyone mentions how appropriate these lyrics were for a dying man, I thought - - well, the verse to "The Sound of Music" (which was not used for the film) was even more a propos: My day in the hills has come to an end, I know. A star has come out to tell me it's time to go.  But deep in the dark green shadows are voices that urge me to stay; so I pause and I wait and I listen for one more sound, for one more lovely thing that the hills might say. . ."

As for OKLAHOMA! - i only looked at the "All er Nothin'" chapter of both the 'scope and the Todd-AO, the 'scope transfer throws lassoes around the Todd-AO presentation, which (to my eyes) looked like a 2nd generation video dub. . .truly, all or nothin.
