Title: THE CHEESY NOTES
Post by: bk on November 19, 2005, 01:13:14 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the vibe of the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're having some wine and cheese, so who knows when they'll come home.

Favorite cheeses (all the standards):  mozzarella, Monterey Jack, cheddar, ricotta, cream...things like that.  I've never had any real "exotic" cheeses.  I'm sure I don't know what I'm missing. ;)

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR JASON!!

And Jason, I checked at home and I have both the "Miss Saigon" and "Les Miz" VHS tapes!  Sadly, the "Miss Saigon" tape is copy guarded. (only the "Miss Saigon" tape is copyguarded. ;) )

Good morning, all!  I slept late this morning, and now I have to deal with the post office and more Mario Frangoulis charts!  This evening goddaughter Charlotte and I have a HARRY POTTER date, and tomorrow afternoon I'm seeing the Juilliard Opera production of Britten's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM.  I've also got to start the notes for the new BABES IN TOYLAND edition:  we had a 2-hour meeting yesterday on December deadlines, and I think the wonderful Skip Kennon will be our new Toyland playmate in the office for the next few weeks.

TOD:  As I get older and rottener, supposedly like a good cheese, I luckily don't feel cheesier, only rottener, so I don't think cheesy these days.  However, I do loves me some cheddar with chili and/or a burger, mozzarella in salad, and parmesan on pasta.

Topic of the day:

Favorite cheese dishes:

Cheese fondue, but I hate it when someone who has a cold double-dips with their fondue fork :)

Also, the mozzarella fritta - basically translated as fried mozzarella, but so much better than that translation implies - at Pietrasanta (47th and 9th) is out of this world, and when they're being generous with the portions, can be a meal unto itself.

Favorite cheesy puns -

There's actually a rock group called CHEESES OF NAZARETH.  And I've seen a dish called CHEESE LOUISE.

And of course there's the parody musical about the young Jewish girl who wasn't allowed to go to the fancy Passover seder - called MATZOH-RELLA

Almost forgot the onion soup at Pigalle (48th and 8th), but you have to specify you want extra cheese, and you'll have a divine cheese-fest in the best sense of the word.

Once again...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JASON!!!

Have a wonderful theatre-filled and theatrical birthday!  Make sure you have cake between and after the shows.

*Oh, and Becco has been known to keep a special birthday dessert in the kitchen from time to time, so...

:)

HAVE  A GREAT ONE!

*And we'll have to celebrate together once I'm back up in the city.  -Which actually might be the Monday after all - at least for the day.  We shall see...

As for cheeses...

I don't think I've ever met a cheese - or even sniffed and nibbled one - I didn't like.

As for the good ole stand-bys, I'm partial to Cheddar - the shaper the better for me.  And triple creme brie truly is an indulgence, as is Maytag bleu cheese and sometimes a gorgonzola or roquefort.  *However, I do have to say that whenever I've dined at Pietrasanta, and someone orders their Gorgonzola Pizza... You can smell that thing from the kitchen five minutes before it comes out of the oven!  But it's a good "stink", if just a bit overpowering, especially when you have a plate of mushroom ravioli in sage butter in front of you.

Manchego, cotija, cabrales... they're all good.

Oh... and Feta cheese too.  The Greek stuff is great, but if you find some of the Roumanian... Wow!  -Just drizzled with some fruity and/or peppery olive oil, served alongside some good olives...  A great snack!

I am really looking forward to a day of nothing but TV and DVDs.

First I will finish IT'S MY PARTY. (BTW, the MGM disc IS an anamorphic transfer, a surprise in itself, and it even has a 5.1 Dolby track though the surrounds aren't used much. The picture looks very nice.)

Next up will be REUNION from Thursday night off the DVR.

This will be followed (finally) by the DVD of MYSTERIOUS SKIN which I've been putting off until I could watch it uninterrupted.

Then, I'd like to see BIRTH which earned Nicole Kidman a Golden Globe nomination last year.

After that, I may pull an already seen DVD off the shelf. I'm thinking it may be an action adventure film like EXECUTIVE DECISION or AIR FORCE ONE. We'll see.

And for those who keep up with these things, yesterday was supposed to be my kitchen floor mopping day, but since I was getting ready to go out to the theater last night, I had to skip it yesterday.

So, this morning, after reading the newspaper, I mopped the kitchen floor. Mission accomplished for another week!

Here I am at work, where we just enjoyed a 40-minute excerpt from The Tempest, performed by The Human Race Theatre Company (http://www.humanracetheatre.org).  Considering all the distractions of performing in the public area of the library, they did a wonderful job.  They'll do the full production Feb. 2-19 at Dayton's Loft Theatre.

Happy Birthday Jason!!!

I went to American Girl this morning and picked up the Accessories for the Sweater Set for Kit. This will be a Christmas present to one of my nieces. Boy that place is crowded even at 9:30am! I didn't see Vixmom or Vixter though at 9:30 I didn't expect to. Thanks for the directions into the story Deb, it was a little easier getting up to the second floor to find the stuff.

Even though it's chilly, it's a beautiful day here in Manhattan (IMHO). It's in the high 30s/low 40s and the sun is shining. Good weather as Thanksgiving approaches.

I love most cheese but I do not like Livarot (a French cheese from the Normandy area) or limburger.

Good morning! Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I just got "the call" from my parents, which was a loverly way to wake up and start the day.

Jose: We definitely need a trip to Becco. You're not coming up THIS Monday, are you? If you are, I don't think I'll be able to see you - I have tickets to the opening of SEASCAPE. And isn't the HHW mini-gathering with MDS that night?

OK...I have to get ready to head out to the Public Theatre. Thanks again for the lovely birthday wishes!

Cheese.  The standards cheddar, colby, swiss, etc....I love cheese on sandwiches, pizzas (of course, in salads, in a good tortilla soup onion soup, atop chili...

Exotic cheese and soft cheeses I'm not much for.  Just the words "goat cheese" turn me off.  I just don't understand how folks can waz rhapsodic over Brie.

I got my 3D glasses today (in the Globe and Mail newspaper).  I am curious what the American version of the MEDIUM glasses look like. Ours come on a full sheet telling us to watch the show on CTV monday at 9pm. And the actual glasses have an eyeball in the middle. And a pic of Patricia Arquette on one side. And I'd have to go check to see what is on the other side.

They were easy to put together though. And they seem quite comfortable (not too big). I'm curious, are we supposed to wear them all show, or only when she looks at the paintings?

TOD - I'm enjoying mild cheddar and Triscuits for my lunch, along with a bottle of V8 juice.  Not a big fan of sharp cheese.  I like almost everything that has been mentioned, so I'll tell a cheese-related story of frustration:

About 15 years ago, following major surgery, I was advised to do 2 things:  1) watch my cholesterol and 2) increase my intake of calcium.  Dietary tips for 1) included "leave the cheese off your sandwiches."  Dietary tips for 2) included "add a slice of cheese to your sandwiches."

Thaw a package of chopped spinach, wring out as much of the water as you can, and blend together with a tub of riccotta cheese.  Stuff the mixture between the skin and meat of a roasting chicken, mostly over the breast meat but don't forget the thighs and legs.  Roast the chicken as you normally would.  Yummer time again!

Der Brucer has scored us a couple of tix for Goblet, for after I get off work tonight.  That means that, with the 9:30 pm showing, we'll be out of the theater past midnight.

So, we'll be having an extra late dinner tonight.  I'm figuring that turkey I roasted a few nights ago, which turned out fine, will give us some great breast meat.  Add some tomatillos cooked down with some jalapenos for a sauce.  Some zucchini for the veg (halved and run under the broiler topped with freshly grated Parmesan), and a pasta side (by Lipton; I will use packaged stuff when it passes my quality tasting and can be picked up in a bargain sale), and dinner will be served!

As for Goblet, I'm already hearing reports of fans of the books being disappointed by what was left out for the film.  Hey, kids, there's just so much you can pack into one film!

OK, from what I hear we'll be missing the subplot about SPEW.  And the older Weasley brothers, Charlie and Bill, won't be seen (kinda bummed on that, they've always sounded hot to me, like the older brothers I wish I'd had).  This could lead to Fleur's later...oh, that's spoiler material, sorry.

But I'm pretty sure Rowling has made clear what has to be included and what can be cut.  The Dursleys don't make an apperence here, but haven't they become repetitious by this point?  They should be back for Order of the Phoenix, as they're much more important in that book.  Peeves has never been in the films, I'm certain with Rowling's OK.

I am so looking forward to tonight.

I had to crawl out of the proverbial woodwork today to say HAPPY ACTUAL BIRTHDAY, ACTUAL DEAR READER JASON!!! I'm due back in the woodwork in a few minutes so I can get back to the dreaded Dr. C's unseemly term paper.

Ginny - Both Pietrasanta and Pigalle are very nice and very moderately priced for what you get.  Unless you count the cost of liquor or dessert (which seem to be expensive everywhere), we get out of either of those places having spent less than $20 per person including tax and tip with a healthy-sized appetizer and main course.  (Of course, if you're willing to spend more, there's pricier stuff on the menu at either place).  Pietrasanta also has a great pre-theater brunch on theatre matinee days - very reasonable.

44 and X (at 44th and 10th), which we went to the other night for Skip's birthday, is expensive but REALLY great - even though it's in our neighborhood, we tend to save it for special occasions.  And as we discovered the other night, it can be a little noisy because of the way the place is set up.

They were easy to put together though. And they seem quite comfortable (not too big). I'm curious, are we supposed to wear them all show, or only when she looks at the paintings?

I could be wrong, but I thought that just specific scenes (Allison's dreams) would be in 3-D.  I haven't heard/read anything about paintings...just the dreams that she has. :-\

Does anyone remember a few years ago when ABC did a whole night of 3-D episodes?  I didn't watch those shows regularly, so I don't remember too much about them, except that "Home Improvement" was one of the episodes.  The whole evening used the red-blue glasses and didn't work very well at all.  I'm sure the technology has improved considerably...at least, I hope it has. ;)

Anyway, that same week (if I remember correctly, IIRC in Internet lingo), "Third Rock From the Sun" also had an hour-long 3-D episode, but it used the clear/dark kind of 3-D glasses, so that when you watched the episode without the glasses, it still looked perfectly normal.  The 3-D effects were also a LOT better!  And the premise was that the 3-D scenes were their dreams...they (being aliens from another planet) were dreaming for the very first time.  I bought that video and it came with four pairs of the clear/dark glasses and it's really cool.  I still have it! ;D

I really love cheese.   I love fresh mozzarella and tomoato slices with fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil.   The Drake Diner in Des Moines has the best Maytag Blue Cheese Burger (they make Maytag Blue cheese in Iowa)  plus if you can get some of the help who have been there for a number of years talking, they will tell you the story of how they think the wrong man was convicted of a hold-murder that happened in the diner about...oh 20 years ago - maybe more, I don't really remember.

In mentioning favorite cheese dishes, I failed to mention Haagen Dazs (sp?) strawberry cheesecake ice cream.   I think they call that one a limited edition flavor, which I assume means that if it's popular it will become a permanent part of the flavor pantheon.

I actually like the alternate ending for Titanic, which was the original written ending. I also like a lot of the deleted scenes, that fit in with the alternate ending. They changed it because they decided things were all a little too neatly wrapped up, or some such nonsense

SPOILER TITANIC ALTERNATE ENDING

In a nutshell, the granddaughter and Brock see Rose climbing up the rail on the back of the ship, they rush to stop her from jumping, which she wasn't going to do anyway, she shows them the necklace, Brock holds it, she gives him a little talk about how the riches don't matter what is important is what's in the heart and that the necklace didn't give her her life or something like that.  Brock clearly gets what she is talking about. She pulls it out of Brock's hand and drops it overboard.  By this time the crew is there and they are having a tizzy fit, but Brock understands and actually let her pull it out of his hand.

So you know more about why the necklace went overboard. Brock is a good guy, he and the granddaughter are interested in each other, there is something else about passing on the message of what is important and Rose clearly hopes that Brock and her granddaughter will have a romance like she had with Jack. Then it goes back to the other ending with her in her room and then going back to join those who died on the Titanic.

That's close anyway, I only watched the alternate ending once

Yesterday Mark and James came down to Salem and we all went to get a bite to eat. They have been wanting to get a dog now that they have bought a house together so I suggested that we visit the local Humane Society.

There were several deleted scenes on the DVD that had a lot to do with the historical stuff in the film. A little more back story on some of the people who died etc. I can see why they weren't necessary for a film that was REALLY long anyway, but it was interesting to watch them since it was the history that made me interested in Titanic.

There is a complete commentary with the historical advisors to the film.  I haven't watched it yet. It will either be very enlightening or very boring.

She and Freddy are even getting along...although Freddy still is somewhat weary...he just wants to make sure that this big creature isn't going to chomp on him or something!

...and now I, also, have a new pet! Believe it or don't, she is a dog! LOL!

Yes, Frida (that is what I am calling her at present...remember how many names I went through for Freddy) is a German Shepard mix (maybe collie or lab)...she is 2 years old, very, very mellow and quite smart.

She and Freddy are even getting along...although Freddy still is somewhat weary...he just wants to make sure that this big creature isn't going to chomp on him or something!

I will post a photo as soon as I can find the thing that connects my camera to the computer! It has been lost for weeks!

CONGRATS!!!!!  Freddy will know how to take care of a dog.  That's great.

...what was funny was that Mark and James really wanted Frida (whose name at the HS was Mariah). But then we decided it would be a good idea to visit some other dogs...in the meantime Frida and I really clicked...I was so impressed with her mellowness...and she knew how to obey several commands already. And she reminds me so much of my dog Heidi, which is the pet that I grew up with...and she was a German Shepard mix, also.

Back for a short time.  Have shaved, will shower, then will be on my way to the Dale of Glen for the signing/reading.

Went to Aron's this morning.  I was told that the day after the announcement (Thursday), the vultures decended on the store, and it looked like it.   There weren't a lot of people this morning.  I picked up an early copy of the new Criterion DVD of Kurosawa's Ran - there was an empty space next to it, so I presume they had Shoot The Piano Player, which comes out the same day.  I also bought a few cast albums I hadn't gotten around to buying - all 20% off the already 15 to 20% discount.  Got Kean, Parade, Bravo Giovanni and a couple of others.

I’m allergic to a number of cheeses which is limiting & not much fun.  Lately I find I can finally eat parmesan cheese, still can’t breath it, but eating it is okay.

Now I can add a very aged parmesan cheese to my list of favorites.  Bryan always tells me which ones to buy. My very favorite cheeses are havarti, jack, Colby jack and Cotswold cheese from England.

I like hoop cheese for my blintzes.  When I can’t find that I will get farmers cheese.  Both should be more like the texture of cottage cheese, not cream cheese.  Since we have lived here I haven’t found either cheese. :(

Even though it's not "cool," I like American cheese on sandwiches.  I love Colby cheese and Edam and Brie.  Meunster and Jack have always been favorites - Meunster and Jack - sounds like a vaudeville team.  There are occasions when I like Swiss Cheese.  I like Bleu cheese in salads.  Don't like Goat or Feta cheese - they skeeve me.

That had crossed my mind. She just looks like a Frida, but I am worried that when I call one name, the other animal may think I am calling them. Mark was calling her Ethel, which I considered for a time...and it went quite will with Freddy (Fred and Ethel), but something German seemed more appropriate. I will have to look for some other Gemanic sounding names...my sister suggested Gretchen...but I didn't like that one. Brunhilde was too long, and Hilda...well, she just don't look like a Hilda....we may go through several names for awhile...mostly I just call her girl or pumpkin! LOL!

Td thanks for the 3D link.

Ron-LOL.  So what is the alternate ending for Titanic?

SPOILER

SPOILER

It ends pretty much in the same way, except instead of Rose throwing the "Heart of the Ocean" pendant overboard all by herself, there is an alternate scene in which she  shows it to the men to whom she has told her story.  There's a lot of talk, and she allows Bill Paxton to hold it in his palm one time before she throws it into the ocean.  The purpose of the scene, I think, was for her to be able to prove to the men on the ship that she had been telling them the truth.

P.S.  Cillaliz told it better.  I like the ending they used, but the alternate did offer more emotional depth for the characters, especially Paxton's.

Back from a wonderfully wonderful signing/reading.  I couldn't have asked for a better crowd.  I really didn't know what to expect today, since about twenty people I'd e-mailed said that they ALL had things to do (I'm going to stop being supportive of the people who ALWAYS say that to me - I go to event after event when these people ask me, and they NEVER show up at mine - they can just KISS MY ASS from now on - if they can find it).   For a while, I thought it might just be The Pogue and I, but by two o'clock we actually ran out of chairs and people were standing.  That was a first for me.  The signing was held upstairs, which is a change for the better, I think.  Very cozy, and much more intimate and fun.  I read a few bits from the book, and there was a lot of laughter, and even some audible shock during certain sections where you come to find out what's happening to the protagonist.  The best part was that there were quite a few people I didn't know at all - people who'd just heard about the signing and came because it sounded interesting.  Of the folks I knew, we had La Pogue, Mr. Kevin Spirtas, my cousin Dee Dee (and her little dog Casey, who loves my books), film composer John Scott, both of my LACC assistants, one of whom brought her two beautiful boys, five and three years of age.  Tammy's mother, Susan, was there, too.  We sold a few books, everyone loved the Parisienne cake and all in all it was the best LA signing I've ever had.  People really seem to be responding to this book, which pleases me no end.  Heard from dear reader PennyO, who professed to think it my best work.

In twenty minutes or so, I'll be rehearsing Been A Long Day with Annette Cardona and a recent LACC alum named Candice Nicole (who I've given quite a few solo things to, as she has a terrific voice).  After that, I'll be on my way to Musso and Frank to join the Pogues, and Richard Valley and his ever-lovin' Tom.

yes, I said it and I'll say it again: I do think Rewind is BK's best to date. The story gallops along, I read it in one sitting - whatta fast read! And a gloriously glorious comeuppance, which is a mighty fine vicarious thrill for anyone who's been done dirty! Writers have the last word. Oh, and CHEESE... hmmm... love a good Gorgonzola. Mascarpone on a dead lizard would still taste exquisite, but it's better with berries! I'm partial to the really fat cheeses - nuthin' like a mild Camembert or Brie. There is one whose name I have forgotten - it's something like a brie on the outside, with a sweet crumbly heart. Yummmmmmm.

I'm back from HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.   The book tore my heart out at the finish, and the movie didn't.  I did like it.  On the plus side, it's quite wonderful, and different from the first three in musical score and tone, and the new cast additions are wonderful.  I think Frances de la Tour wins the Edna Mae Oliver lookalike award, and I wish she and Robbie Coltrane would remake THE PENGUIN POOL MYSTERY.

The previews for KING KONG look amazing, and we - Charlotte and I - can't wait to see it.  On Tuesday night, Charlotte and I have a date for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, then she and her family abandon me for Thanksgiving.

Today was quite wonderful - full of phone calls from friends and loved ones (every call, unfortunately, was missed, so I had a lot of messages) and a day full of theatre. SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE was very good, though this time around I enjoyed the first act more than the second. Go figure. THE COLOR PURPLE was wonderful - again. Many changes still being made, 99% of which work to make the story much clearer. And I cried again. I may be seeing it again in 2 weeks. :D

And now I'm eating my dinner and watching some TV before I head to bed. This birthday truly has been a good one, and I have most of you to thank for it...

Der B and I did not see Goblet, as planned.  He had ordered the tix on-line, but when he went to the theater (prior to picking me up at work) they told him that they weren't honoring the on-line orders, and that they were sold out.

Just as well, I suppose.  We'll be trying again tomorrow, which being Sunday might be a better night for us.  As it is, I've a full work schedule over the next week.

The good news is, I'm definately working on Thanksgiving Day.  Der B and I don't have to go to his daughter's house and eat what she calls dinner!  Hip-hip and Hurrah!

Der Brucer is watching a DVD he picked up today, something called The Skelton Key.  It is quite loud, in the same way that the volume seems to be pumped up during commercial breaks on broadcast television.   :P

Saw Harry Potter tonight with TPunk. He was standing right on 49th Street.
No, no, the movie. We saw the movie. I will only say that it is my favorite one so far.

Been E&T this week due to overwork, so I got a lot of catching up to do. For instance I didn't leave work Friday until 8:30 at night, and by the time I got home, I can't even look at a computer.

They tell me November is the craziest month since every dance company and orchestra is doing a holiday show of some sort, so I'm hoping that I am nearly through the fire.

I too, have returned from GOBLET OF FIRE.  First off, I should say that this book was my least favorite of the six.  Secondly, I think they could trim about twenty-five minutes off of the running time and have a far better film.  And third, if you have heard that this film is darker than the previous ones, the answer is yes (at least judging by the terrified young children sittilng all around me).

Still the movie is beautifully filmed, the acting is solid, and the direction (for the most part) is crisp. Our three leads continue to grow and mature both physically, and as actors.  Who would have ever thought that Rupert Grint, as Ron, would turn into a hottie when he grew up?  I cried in the final half hour of the film, which I never did in the book; but still, I found the ending somewhat lacking.  Each of the first three films seemed able to stand alone, but with GOBLET OF FIRE for the first time in the series I thought it should have ended with ...TO BE CONTINUED.

DG Ann is seeing the Harry Potter movie as I type.  I'm sure she's having herself a grand old time.

This is, of course, the first Potter film to be rated PG-13, instead of a simple PG.

It remains to be seen if the final, seventh Potter film will be rated R.  Perhaps Hermione could teach Ron some new tricks to do with his wand?

Good Evening!

Whew!  This has been one long day.  A good one, but I just got home about an hour ago - and I left the house at 9:30 this morning.  I shall catch up later...

Goodnight.

There is kind of a weird scene with HP in a hot tub.

Back from a lovelier than lovely dinner with the Pogues, Richard Valley, and his ever-lovin' Tom.  Stories were told, laughs were laughed, and obscene amounts of food were ingested, none more so than myself (I had the cracked crab, which is very lo-cal, and I didn't overdo the 1000 island dressing - but I did have bread pudding for dessert and that put me over the edge).

Hildy and I just returned from West Linn where we had dinner with Mark, James and Hildy's kennel pal, now cousin, Digger!

Those two dogs just love each other...really! You see it would appear that Hildy is not yet spayed and Digger hasn't had his little operation yet, either! LOL! So we had to try and keep an eye on them at all times. We hadn't even thought about it until we noticed Digger constantly trying to have relations with poor Hildy!

That aside, we had a wonderful dinner and watched MA AND PA KETTLE GO TO TOWN, which James was highly amused by...in fact I have never seen him laugh so hard before...Mark and I were rather surprised!

And everyone seems to agree that Hildy, short for Hildegard, is an appropriate name for the new dog.

And Freddy doesn't even hiss at Hildy anymore...I think they are becoming pals.
