Title: FULL SPEED AHEAD
Post by: bk on November 21, 2005, 12:11:11 AM
Well, you've read the notes, it's full speed ahead, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've completely misunderstood the title of today's notes and think that it's full Speedos ahead - they're all wearing Speedos now and are quite a sight.

Well, I'm not gonna get bitch-slapped, even though there is only one post before this and it's BK's. It's 7:23 in the morning. Where are the early morning denizens? I'm about to leave for work but I had to put something here. I don't know if it's succulent but it's a post.

Also, if anyone at HHW bought one of the Sony/BMG copy protected music CDs and wants to exchange it, here is a link to begin the process.

http://www.upsrow.com/sonybmg/

Of course, if you don't play the CD on a PC you don't have to worry about the software being installed on your computer. Also, if you have a Mac computer you don't have that worry either. It only affects PCs.

Good morning, all!  Yesterday, because I had decided to sleep later, I reset thr alarm.  Last night I forget to set it back, so I overslept.  Good morning, DRBen!

I have to pick up music to be scored for a holiday concert this morning, take care of some banking, and then I need to work on my editorial notes for Toyland.  Beyond that, the biog event of the day is dinner at Barrymore's, 6:30 pm, with DRsMichael Shayne, Ben, FJL, and hopefully DRJose.

TOD:  the first jaunt I remember is to Washington, DC, with a stop in Philadelphia.  I was probably around 6 or so.  I got lost in the Smithsonian for several hours, which was quite a panicky bit of time, and beyond that and the Liberty Bell, I have no other memories of the trip.

My first trip away from home was also one of my most memorable family vacations - in 1959, we went to visit my father's relatives in Kentucky.  I saw the OHIO RIVER - and we crossed that long bridge!  It was very exciting!  I took a picture of it, but I don't know if I still have it!

Good Morning all I have not caught up.  We had a busier than busy weekend.  Friday night Vixter & I were setting up for a Pancake Breakfast  and attending a rehearsal for a Santa Lucia Fest (the Vixter is part of Lucia's court this year and has been semi-promised the role of Lucia for next) and getting homework done  so that the weekend would be clear.

Saturday we were up at 6 AM so we could meet the rest of the Girl Scout troop and head into NYC for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  We had nice center seats although a bit further back than we expected,  (we had been told we were getting orchestra seats but we were in the mezzanine instead)

The show was fun and the ORCHESTRA WAS THERE!! HOO and RAY!  ANd and everytimne they appeared they rewceived a huge round of applause so the audience seemed to be quite appreciative and supportive  of the live orchestra no matter what nonsense Cablevision  et al was trying to spout about the canned stuff being "just as good"

Then we ended up in Times Square at a stupid Applebees despite my efforts (with the aid of dear elmore.... I hope I didn't disrupt your work too much sweetie with my call) to steer then to John's pizza or Barymores or somewhere with a bit of local color qnd good food   but I was shouted down  so we ended up with overpriced crap.... ah well!

But from there the day got even better  the Girl Scouts are headed in their own directions and the Vixter & I met up with DR Michael Shayne who very kindly treated us to a lovely dessert  after the Vixter took him on a tour of the Times Square Toys R Us (which he very patiently endured) and then we took in a street fair (where we could have purchased REAL sterling silver rings  for $7 and 100% cashmere scarves for $10 and original oil paintings for $15... but we somehow managed to resist all these bargains)
We had a lovely visit. On our way to the subway  afterwards the Vixter said, "You know Mama, you have the nicest friends!!"

Unfortunatly for me I went a block too short and an Avenue too long and overshot the subway entrance  and was instead sucked in by a Build a Bear store where I was sweet talked into a purchase..... at least I managed to avoid The American Girl Place for once!

When we finally did get to the subway who did we spy across the tracks but DR Michael Shayne who had managed to score a seat to Avenue Q at the TKTS booth and was on his way to meet up with DR Ben.

Sunday we had church then Sunday School then a birthday party for our friends' 2 year old son and then race home to get the Vixter to her Youth Group.

I am just glad the weekend is over so that I come to   work to get some rest!

The first excursion I remember as a child was to my uncle and aunt's (on my mother's side) house in Washington DC.  It was a nice enough trip but oddly my most vivid memories of that trip revolve around junk food.   That was the only place we knew of that had a McDonald's at the time, and the Big Mac came wrapped tightly in cellophane so that the special sauce saturated the entire sandwich - a taste treat that I always associate with Washington DC, and the Big Mac has never tasted as good as it did in Washington.  The other was that I was a real pain to everyone about being "kosher for Passover" during Passover - and my aunt bought a clearly non-Passover candy bar for herself and I asked if it said kosher for Passover; she looked at it and pointed to the letter R with a circle around it, and said "Right there, the R stands for Rabbi."  I had no answer to that, of course!

Today is Eleanor Powell day on TCM.  At 2:15 pm EST, HONOLULU with the most fantastic hula-tap number I have EVER seen...and ALL those spins!  She was great!

And like DR MATTH - I also think the terpsichory of Burns & Allen in DAMSEL IN DISTRESS is outstanding....they do a couple of numbers with Astaire that are scathingly brilliant!

Mornin'... I don't want to be at work today. Oh, well...at least it's a VERY short week (2 1/2 days)!!

My family has always travelled. My paternal grandparents had a log cabin in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, so we'd go there in the fall/winter for weekends. I remember seeing pictures of me having my bath in the kitchen sink. The only thing I really remember about that cabin was lying in bed up in the loft and looking outside - it was snowing pretty hard. That's all I remember.

When I was 5 we moved to England. I guess that was the first time I really travelled.

I haven't been on a proper vacation since my sophomore year of high school, when I went to Mexico with a school group. I absolutely loved it. It was my first trip without my parents and I thought I was so grown up. Of course, if my Spanish teacher hadn't been there, I'd probably be a white slave somewhere in Cuernavaca right now, but we had a great time. I was there for 10 days and didn't want to leave...

Tonight is the big MEDIUM 3-D event! I will watch and record the show at the same time so if the 3-D is really cool, I can go back and experience it again.

I'll also be recording CSI: MIAMI at the same time. Since one of the stars of the show took a nail right above his right eye last week, I'll be interested to see if he's bandaged, etc. or if he'll just look normal for the sake of syndicated reruns of the show which might play out of order. Folks might not understand why his right eye is covered.

SPOILER POTENTIAL

SPOILER POTENTIAL

Re:  "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy"

Both shows last night were absolutely topnotch!  The neighbor lady with the stun gun was hysterical...and I thought Gabrielle's last scenes were extremely moving.

"Grey's Anatomy" was typically wonderful.  What a treat to see Brian Kerwin on TV again, and in such a pivotal role.  Kerwin is one of those people who will look terrific no matter how old they get, apparently.

As for George, it's really interesting that I was seeing his relationship with his father and brothers through "his" eyes until his father explained to him that they were desperately trying to find something they had in common with him.  There is an argument to be made that "they" should not insist he pretend to enjoy something they do and that they should, instead, pretend to enjoy something he does.  But, they don't seem that imaginative and George is, whether he realizes it or not, someone they're extremely proud of.

Yes, this is absolutely THE thing folks do...seek out something familiar rather than open their minds to something extraordinary.

From 1987-1992, I was hauled into more MacDonald' and KFC's (in Italy!!!!) by visiting friends and family desperately seeking the comforts of home, only later to drag them (not QUITE kicking and screaming) into a trattoria where I FORCED them to endure a leisurely 4- or 5-course meal...which they LOVED, by the way, once it dawned on them there was no real rush to get back to a hotel or to my villa.

When I make my first trip to NYC, I know Applebee's is going to be MY eatery of choice.....NOT!

Yes, this is going to be quite THE week for DVD releases.

I've pre-ordered "War of the Worlds", "The Polar Express" and the Streisand TV box.

I have no delusions that I'll see any of them this week, as they've all been ordered to be shipped to my office address, and after Wednesday, no deliveries will be made here until next Monday.

Still....I have any number of box sets that I've yet to tap into -- the comedy set from WB/MGM is one of them.  I have both Harryhausen box sets and have only watched two DVDs from them.

Sigh.

I talked my mom into getting the new TV Guide so she would have 3-D glasses for tonight's "Medium" airing.

Her e-mail back to me was that she found the TV Guide in the grocery store, but it had no glasses.  She reckoned southern folks probably were considered too stupid to know how to make them work so they were spared the trouble.

I wrote back and described the cover to her, told her that there are no longer "regional" issues, and that she might have confused TV Guide with TV Digest or that the store might still be selling last week's TV Guide.

Haven't heard back yet.

I've just got a couple of minutes before heading off to work.  Just a few comments about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with der B and I saw last night.

First, it's the best of the films so far.  There's a lot that was left out from the book, of course; the books are now a totally different animal.  The films are kind of Harry Potter Lite.  (Tastes great, less filling.)

However, with the script approval that Rowling has, to ensure that what absolutely needs to go into the films is included, what becomes interesting about what was left out is that we readers can now do some reverse-detecting and eliminate the plot threads in the newer books that aren't included in the film.  No SPEW.  No older Weasley brothers.  For that matter, no Percy Weasley, at least not this time around; this could be interesting, particularly when it comes to Order of the Phoenix (which is not about Harry working at a restaurant and serving up a dish of fowl).

Point two, or maybe three, particularly of interest to DR Elmore: I thought Patrick Doyle took over the music composition duties very well, taking from John Williams' lead and expanding in ways quite appropriate for the film.  There is a scene towards the end of the film, when Mad-Eye Moody takes Harry into his office, where the music also hit certain chords that reminded me of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, not an actual quote but very similar in chord formation in the strings.  Did you hear this, too, or was this just in my imagination?

Finally, unlike most people, der B and I are credits watchers.  We will stay through the end of the credits, seeing if there are any names we remember from other films, even in the stuff behind the camera.  Towards the end of the credits, a song is sung, fairly good in fact, a ballad that struck me as an obvious bid for a Best Song nomination.

Must dash; I'll try to catch up again later.

Or someone might have just taken the glasses out of the TV GUIDE not wanting to pay for the entire magazine. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people didn't do that.

Re: last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.

I didn't really enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the last two episodes. There were a few funny things last night, but not enough good stuff.

I liked the Bree storyline.  Lynnette's storyline with teaching her kids not to get into cars with strangers was also cute. But I thought they really glossed over what happened with Gabrielle (would have liked to see what happened as opposed to hearing about it after). And I didn't really care for the Susan storyline (with her father).

I did read one interesting thing this week.  Marc Cherry only wrote one episode of DH this season so far, and it was last week's episode.  I think one good thing about last year's shows was that many of them had grand endings (as did last week's show). I miss that!

Monday's quick hello.

No show today.

Maybe some more walking around.

Having dinner tonight with at Barrymore's with the usual haines his way suspects.

Yesterday I saw Alter Boyz, I highly recommend. a great afternoon of theater.

Last night it was Forbiddeb Broadway, which I haven't seen a vesion in over 10 years,

The spoof of Light in the Pizza was the killer. Had the audience rolling in the aisles.

After the show I walked passsed the Gershwin and they were just going in for the 2nd act! And the started a half hour before FB started.

Now I don't know if this was mentioned or not but on the extras for State Fair they had a early 70's failed 1hr drama pilot called State Fair. BORING!

But the guest star was BK's friend Linda Purl and she sang on the show.

Her BF was Mitch Vogel who was hot in the 60's and 70's and then disappered. What ever happened to him??

Monday greetings!  Like several other DR's, I have a short work week - just today and tomorrow - then I'm off for 5 days in a row.  Should be 6, but that's a rant I'll avoid here.

Anyway, also like many others here the first major trip I remember was to Washington, DC, in the fall of 1956 or 1957.  My dad had to be there on business, so near the conclusion of his commitment, my mother drove my sister and me (it took 2 days from Detroit) and we met Dad for a family vacation.  There were 2 pretty revolutionary things about this:  1) they took us out of school (my sister was in high school and I was in first grade) and 2) it was somewhat daring for 3 women to drive that distance, and stop overnight, without a man to protect them.  We stayed in the home of my mother's distant cousin and her husband, who was a muckety-muck at Riggs National Bank.  They threw some very fancy party at which I remember the grown-ups drinking a lot of champagne.

Yes, I did! Thank you so much!! I got TWO birthday songs, actually - the loverly one from you and DD the Vixter and one from my maternal grandparents and all of my little cousins (they range from 3-13 years old). What nice birthday surprises! :)

And tell DD the Vixter she has a LOVERLY singing voice...as does her mom.  ;D

We also travelled regularly when I was a kid.  I remember Vernal, Utah (where all the dinosaur fossils are).  And I remember regular visits to Bear Lake in Northern Utah/Southern Idaho, as well as Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, etc., etc.  We also had regular summer visits to semi-lovely Yakima, Washington, where my father had summer camp in his role as a U.S. Army General.  I remember one summer in particular when I was probably 4 or 5 when I was out playing in a big field and an Army helicopter flew down about 5 or 6 feet above me, and my Dad jumped out and greeted me!

Luckily I just gave them a review with the Christina Applegate cast so I doubt I would have to suffer through the excruiating pain of watching Miss Spears try to sing, dance and act all at the same time. As much as I love seeing really bad theatre I don't know if I could sit through that.

We did enjoy The Full Monty - more than we expected.  It's not a show for which I'll run out and buy the CD to listen to over and over, but it was fun.

And how did he enjoy Dayton, OH?

My childhood memories are not the same as the stories my mother tells me about things we did.

For instance, at some point in my first few years, my parents travelled from Johnston SC to Chicago IL where we visited his brother, my late Uncle Andy, and his family, and we all went to a Cubs game.  I have ZERO memory of that.

I do remember taking a bus with my mom and we rode and rode and rode and rode...Johnston SC to Winston-Salem NC where my grandfather and step-grandmother were living at the time...sometime in the early 1950s (probably a year or so after the Chicago trip).

Vacations I remember as a child were always to Daytona Beach, FL...I have lovely memories of those trips.  I also remember a Sunday drive from Johnston SC to Folly Beach SC (near Charleston).  My paternal grandmother was with us and had never seen the ocean.  Her reaction was, "Hmmmph!"  My mom and I found a conch shell (with inhabitant) on the beach.  The beach was pretty littered up with debris as a hurricane had bypassed only the week before and lots of stuff washed up.  We took the conch with us and my grandmother got the beastie out of it (but not till after it was dead and stinky).

We moved from Johnston to Greenville SC in 1957 prior to my 9th birthday.  It was then we started making several trips a year to Asheville NC where my dad's brother, my Uncle George and his wife (Aunt Belle), lived in the community of Biltmore NC.  I travelled through all the national forests/parks of western North Carolina during those years.  It was lovely.

And, we still made our annual jaunts to Daytona Beach...although one year we went to Myrtle Beach with a bunch of people my parents knew from work.

DR Ginny: How did he like Dayton? Well...the first thing he said last night was, "Only 28 more days!" Yes, he's counting the days til he can come back to New York. That doesn't necessarily reflect on Dayton - mostly on the tour in general - but they were 2 weeks in Dayton, which is weird since most of their stops are one or two nights. He liked staying in one town for a couple of weeks, but he said he got bored. Oh, well. They're travelling to Canada today.

Glad you liked the show! I'm not a huge fan of the score - I think SCOUNDRELS is much better.

I can't fathom the box office sales if she actually goes in... And I can't imagine how high they'll jack the ticket prices if she signs on. And I can't imagine that she could pull of 8 shows a week... I just...well...I just can't imagine.

I remember a visit I made to Johnston from Greenville one summer in 1960 or 61.  I went to spend a week with my Aunt Doris, Uncle Rock and three cousins.  During my visit, we drove to Myrtle Beach for a Sunday outing.  We rode in my my uncle's pickup truck.  My two male cousins and I rode in back.

During the outing at the beach, I remember feeling very warm, and then I felt like I was burning.  This continued on the trip back.  It also rained on us, which felt pretty good to me.

I had a MAJOR sunburn.  My back and shoulders were covered with large blisters for a day or so.  Then, there were small blisters.  I slept sitting up.  By the end of the week, my back was a huge "peeling zone"...strips of skin would come off without prompting.

My mother was furious that my aunt didn't take me to a doctor.  But...everyone got over it.

I don't do "sun" any more.   I still worry that one day, a bunch of skin cancers might pop up on my back.

TOD:

I used to go on trips to my Nana's house all by my lonesome from the age of about 3 to about 28 (when she passed on)

I would go for about a week or two at a time.  Up until I was 9 or 10 she lived in Fresh Meadows, here in Queens (which is about 35 miles from where I lived)

and Nana and I would take the bus or the subway into NYC and "do' the Herald Square Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue & walk through Rockerfeller Center .  She would take me to her stockholder's meetings (I rememerb the Domino Sugar one best because they were giving  a box of sugar cubes to each stockholder on as we left the meeting. The man gave one to my Nana and then one to the man behind me and I spoke up as only an indignant and overlooked 4 year old could and said "I think you forgot SOMEBODY!"  I got my own box of sugar cubes and an apology.

Nana took me to Radio City Music Hall to see movies and Chinese acrobats and best of all the "Dancerinas"  my term for the Rockettes.

The very first and only time I remember the whole family going away together for a vaction that wasn't a trip to a relatives house ,was in June 1974, just before my senior year of high school when we drove down to Florida .

We visited the battlefields in Gettysburg. We stopped in at Washington DC to see the Smithsonian, in Virginia where we toured some underground caverns, (is Howe Caverns right?)
I remember a wonderful restaurant in Charlotte SC it was pirate themed... a old tavern that had been expanded, they said it had underground passages out to the shore and that smugglers used to use them to get contraband by the British.  They had these huge torches all around the outside of it.  It was a very memeorable and enjoyable dinner, in fact so much so that when my Mom , the Vixter & I took out ladies only trip to Florida in 1995 we sidetracked off I-95 to go found the restaurant for lunch.

MattH, you could probably tell me the name of the place!

We finaly ended up at the newly opened Disney World in Florida,  only the Magic Kingdom was completed back then, Epcot was still a couple of years from opening the whole MGM studio thing hadn't even been announced (or perhap thought of) yet.

While in Florida we also toured an aquarium (I'm not sure if it was Sea World or some other Aquarium) and an old Fort the name of which escapes me, and NASA.

If the pirate-themed place was in Charlotte, those passages to the shore would have run for hundreds of miles, I think.  That's about how far Charlotte is from a beach.

I admit I'm reacting as much to her image as anything. I didn't know that she was in Ruthless. As much as I enjoyed Ruthless (I saw it in New York and I worked in the late 80s with Joel, now Joal, Paley, one of the creators) it's a camp fest. Sweet Charity is not Ibsen but I think it would take a little more work, IMHO, to pull off 8 shows a week for Charity than for Ruthless.

I will (seriously) stop after this next comment. I'm also annoyed that they would seriously consider putting her husband into the show as well, especially if he replaced Denis O'Hare as Oscar. I am open to change and experimentation and out of the ordinary casting but this kind of thing just makes me sad.

End of long, drawn out rant.

I had a similar experience during my visit to Florida with my grandparents. We went to Fort Myers Beach and I, being the fair-skinned Anglo-Irish kid that I was, got fried. And I lost a tennis shoe - just one - but that's another story for another day. Anywho, we headed up to Orlando the next day to go to Disney World and when we got to the hotel that night, I started vomiting and had a bit of a fever. My grandmother tried to pull my shirt off so I could get in the tub and I started screaming bloody murder. I couldn't raise my arms above shoulder level. We finally got the shirt off and found that I had egg-sized blisters on both shoulders. My grandmother cried the rest of the night.

We cleaned up the blisters and bandaged them and headed to Disney the next morning. I was fine for the most part, but every time one of the costumed characters came up to say hello, I wanted to run - they all put their hands on your shoulders when they pose for pictures with you. I still remember the pictures from that trip. I was wearing a red shirt, and in the pictures that were taken later in the day, you could see that the blisters had...well...you know. It basically looked like someone had poured some sort of liquid down the sleeves of my shirt.  :-\

I haven't been to Florida since.

TOD:

The earliest out-of-town trips I can recall would be to cities like Philadelphia, Washington DC and NYC, though I can't really remember what the exact purposes were.

My favorite childhood vacation was a week in a campsite next to Kerrywood Amusement Park in PA.  My parents and my aunt and uncle rented a humongous camper which turned out to be off-limits to the kids once we got there.  But it was fun to sleep outdoors in and out of our pup tents.  I mostly hung out with the two cousins who were around my age, and we were allowed to go off on our own throughout most of the day (I can't imagine that happening nowadays.)  We went swimming in the early morning, hit the rides until dinnertime, and went back for a more leisurely visit to the park at night with the adults.  A good time was had by all except for my oldest sister, who kept getting caught smoking cigarettes with my older cousins.

Because we live on Long Island we are only about 20 minutes away from a beach, north shore, south shore depending on whether you're looking for the smooth waves and rocky beaches at the Long  Island Sound or  the smooth sandy beaches and the Atlantic ocean waves.  So just about every weekend in the summer my Mom would pack up the cooler and Dad would load the car and off to the beah we'd go.   When I was ten dad bought his first boat and then we would go out every weekend fishing or riding  over to Fire Island or go to one of the deserted barrier beaches and spend the day over there grilling hotdogs and fresh caught fish and fresh dug clams and scallops and boiling fresh caught crabs over a little hibachi stove.

Later, I recall going to Annopolis, Newport News and Baltimore before my 8th birthday.  I know this because I learned to play pinochole when I was 8 and I was in Annopolis at the time.

Part of being in Newport News, we took a tour of the battleship Intrepid, which my uncle, the colonel, had duty on.

Title: Re:FULL SPEED AHEAD
Post by: Ben on November 21, 2005, 11:41:35 AM
I was going to mention this earlier but forgot. It's Joy's question from yesterday regarding height.

I always had my height listed on my resume. Those who have met me know I'm short but, nonetheless, I listed the correct numbers. What was the point of inflating it even an inch or two? I know that I lost some roles because of my height (you were good but we need someone taller) and I never had enough Michael J. Fox or Tom Cruise or Alan Ladd clout to get past that seeming deficiency. I don't know why an actor would seem to be upset at being asked his height. I know that many actors (male and female) don't want to list or be asked their ages because even if you don't remotely look your age, if that number is uttered, then somehow you've crossed a line and you may not be cast. But height is pretty obvious.

It's kind of rambling but that's my thought on the question

Other than "LOTR", I can think of no other film that has impressed me so much in the last decade!

My favourite films from the last decade would also include "The Chorus", "Motorcycle Diaries", "Russian Ark", "Travelling Birds", "Spirited Away", "Norsica of the Valley Of The Winds", "The Triplets of Belville" and
"Secrets and Lies".

Ah well!

Thank you so much and I can't wait to see it!

I'm just glad you got it. I'll be interested to read how the high definition widescreen MEDIUM that I recorded for you shows up on your TV. There should be gray bars across the top and bottom of the image, but you'll be seeing the widescreen image from the HDTV broadcast, just with standard resolution since my DVD recorder can only record in standard resolution.

Speaking of Medium, while walking through Times Square with the charming Michael Shayne we were met by persons handing out Medium 3-D glasses
I grabbed a couple of extras for tonight.  We were joking that we would have to express mail a pair to Jane so she and Keith could watch at the sme time!

I doubt we will watch it tonight-too late for us.  ;D

DR Joy, I didn't save the LOST episodes so far. But I would suggest taping the upcoming ones (so when you get the first ones you'll have these).  Plus i'm guessing that during the holidays they will be repeating many of the shows. And we can tell you which ones they are showing.

Hasn't LOST already repeated the season's first two episodes a couple of weeks ago when they ran repeats two or three weeks in a row? That doesn't mean they won't run them again, but I suspect not until summer.

I'm eating at my desk today.

We all went to tour a new building that the County's Social Services Agency will be moving into next week.  One of my co-workers managed the project for the County and she is very proud of all she has accomplished, as she should be.

That said, we were unable to go out to lunch, so I stopped off and got some fried beef and tomato over rice....YUM.

Finished GIGI this afternoon. My goodness, "I Remember It Well" was in astonishingly bad shape with scratches and dirt all over it. The rest looked pretty good, but I was really horrified by what awful shape that particular scene was in. The color throughout the entire movie varies too from overly saturated to less intense, and you can't dial down the color to make those red, red walls of Mamita's apartment less intense because the rest of the film would look truly drab.

After GIGI, I put in HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS. I watched a tiny bit of it on ABC's high definition broadcast last Saturday night, but I noticed that ABC was showing a 16:9 framed high definition version of the film, so I didn't watch too much of it knowing I was missing some of the width of the picture. Throughly enjoyed the first half hour of the film once again and whetted my appetite all the more for the new one I'll see tomorrow.

I would have gotten farther along in the film if the phone had stopped ringing or if I hadn't answered it.

The house seats for SPAMALOT came through so Dylan and I will see it this Saturday night.  Thank you, Larry Hochman!

Tonight is dinner with the NYC gang and DRMichaelShayne at Barrymore's and I hope the very tardy postman arrives before I leave; I ran out of checks and I've waited over a week now for the new ones to arrive.  Bills are waiting, and I'm not getting any younger.  Hopefully, they will arrive by Wednesday, but I'm getting sick of schlepping to the post office every day for money orders.

DR Jane, you should have read VANITY FAIR last night.  I love the story and I've read the complete novel, but I found it the most boring book I ever picked up.

We flew out on Thanksgiving morning and returned Sunday evening.  I had a new camera (Minolta ST1010) and two lenses (35 mm & 55 mm) and I covered the city while I was there.  I had a blast.

I don’t remember my first family trip.  We took lots of little vacations to Palm Springs, Laguna, San Francisco & Tahoe.  My father was always cold and hated the snow, but one winter we went to the mountains for a few days.  I don’t remember where just that it was loads of fun.

There was a trip to the Disneyland Hotel when my father attended a convention there.  Having older siblings was great.  I had so much freedom to run with them, minus our parents.  We spent two full days going on rides with short breaks to swim in the pool at the hotel.

Then when I was eight there was two week trip to Mexico I mentioned the other day.

Except for the small trips my parents traveled to exciting places around the world, leaving us at home.  In the summer they sent us away to camp.   I loved camp.

It's the MGM issue, but wasn't the Warners version the same disc in new packaging? (I don't know; I'm asking. I thought they did that with all of the MGM movies they got when they won the rights to the old MGM catalog.)

I recorded off HBO the movie SPANGLISH. I remember when it came out last year around this time, there were high hopes for it including hope for Academy Awards, etc. Then the reviews were fairly mixed, and it didn't do great at the box-office so all talk of Oscars seemed to dissipate.

Still looking forward to seeing it anyway now a year after the fact.

Okay, now that I've read the notes, I will amend my previous answer to the TOD:  When I was little, we used to go to the family farmhouse in western PA, which was in the middle of nowhere.  Those trips were always memorable for the stops at Tastee-Freez somewhere in Maryland, Hagerstown or Hancock or something like that.  And for the singing songs in the car with grandparents or my mom.  I never minded the four-hour drive.

Topic of the Day -

My most memorable childhood trip was when my family went to the Philippines when I was six.  We went over Christmas Break.  It was all sooo strange and sooo wonderful.  First of all, being someplace in December and having the temps somewhere in the upper 80s and 90s - and humid!  We slept under mosquito netting.  -And were "warned" to keep our mouths closed while we slept in order to prevent roaches and other critters from crawling in our mouths while we slumbered.  Yikes! - The things one remembers from one's childhood.  We celebrated Christmas and New Year's there.  Fireworks!  And there was also a wedding while we were there.  I still remember the team of manicurists descending on the house, and getting everyone in the wedding party all ready for the ceremony.  OH!  I still remember choosing which pig would become the lechon for the wedding feast.

There are still some pics from that trip that when I look at them, I can still remember where we were.  Even when my parents can't.

Another random memory from that trip: Going to the fish market with my grandfather, my Dad's father.  He smoked cigarettes, and always had one in his mouth.  Well, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I asked for a cigarette, and he gave me one.  He lit it.  I tried to puff on it.  Coughed.  Yuck!  Then left it in the mouth of a fish that was on display.

DR Joy - Cameron Station is still there.  However, I believe the military base part of is now smaller than it was, but the whole park area is still there.  The Coast Guard still uses it for their Annual Coast Guard Day Picnic.  -My Dad would take us there regularly - and he still goes.  Quite the "picnic": enough food for at least a thousand people, pony rides for the kids, live music, and other entertainment.

But if you head down Route 7/Duke Street in Alexandria, Cameron Station will be on your right a few blocks after Pickett Street.

Alas, I am not in NYC today.  Even though I had toyed with the idea of heading up there this "weekend".  However, after I left yesterday's rehearsal, I just felt so tired and exhausted.  These six-day work weeks are killers!  Actually, I had even fallen asleep during rehearsal - I believe Brad Oscar woke me up from my impromptu nap.  ;)  So...

I've been having a "me" day today.  After getting up around 11:30(!), and figuring out the DVD/TV/VCR connections, I put in a DVD and worked out!  It was my first actually work out in months.  I figured that after two weeks of getting my diet back on track, I should get some more physical activity back into my "program".  I was very happy to find that starting with the "medium" level of the workout was not as hard as I thought it was going to be.  And it really did feel good to work up a sweat.

Then came breakfast/brunch.  Some online bill-paying.  Some catch up e-mails.  Four loads of laundry (the final load, whites, are now in the dryer. -Remember, always finish with your whites - the bleach helps to sanitize your wash tub.)  And I need to head out in a little bit to check my P.O. Box, and make a Trader Joe's run.

In any case...

I hope everyone has a wonderful time at Barrymore's tonight.  I'll be there with you in spirit.

DR MBarnum - Great pics!

*If you have lost your camera's cord, just buy one of those USB multi-card readers.  That's what I did when I lost track of mine.  You plug the reader into your computer, take the memory card out of your camera, plug that into the reader.. and Voila!  It just acts like another external drive for your computer - just click on the icon in Windows Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac).

And the card readers are relatively cheap too.

*I'm saving the "splurge" for Turkey Day.  I've never met a pumpkin pie I didn't devour.

**But I did splurge a little bit last night - some cookies, and some Chocolate Almond soy ice cream (which was surprisingly good).

*** And of this morning: nine pounds!  :)

As for Oprah's Favorite Things...

The whole surprise twist concerning the audience was kind of neat, although, I could not help thinking about all the other selfless individuals who gave their time and money to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina who could not be a part of the Oprah audience.

Yes, there were some pretty extravagant "prizes" this year, but it actually didn't seem as overblown as in past years - at least in the final dollar count.  The items ranged in price from $25 to $1600.

And, as always, I always feel sort of "sorry" for the few men in the audience who get all that "girly" stuff.   ;)  However, it is "Oprah's Favorite Things" not "Steadman's Favorite Things".  But, I guess with the vouchers for some of the companies, the men could get the male equivalent of some of the items.  Or just give some of the items away to the special women in his life.

Jose congratulations on your weight loss.

Thanks.  Now if I can just make it through Thanksgiving Day - and weekend... And then Christmas.

Again, I've basically just cut out "overt" sugar and white flour.  I'm also eating more frequently throughout the day - three substantial meals, and two good snacks.  Keeping the blood-sugar levels constant throughout the day.  -I'm digging those pre-packed "handfuls" of almonds from Trader Joe's.  I have to say, the rehearsal schedule has also helped to keep me on schedule meal-wise.  And watching our very athletic ensemble men working each day has also provided some motivation so to speak.  -We have a former Olympic gymnast in the cast!

And I'm still "enjoying" the challenge of resisting the "goodies".  And I'm also enjoying cooking again on a regular basis.

The true challenge will be once the show opens, and I just have to be at the theatre for the show each evening (or day for the matinees).  Must not get lazy!  But I think the more I post "publicly" about my progress here on HHW, the more I'll be motivated to keep going, and keep the weight off.

OH!

Saturday night, I met my friend, Andy, at Tysons Corner for dinner.  We ended up at Slade's.  The meal was OK, but the dining experience left a lot to be desired.  Spotty service, and the kitchen seemed to be having timing issues all around.  The three tables around us had to send one or two items back to the kitchen for some reason or other.  Myself, I was quoted the wrong price initially for the swordfish special, the server then got the whole "which side order, salad was included or not" deal wrong, they started clearing off the table while we were getting up to leave, "Excuse me.", etc., etc., etc.

Alas, I think all the good servers and cooks probably jumped ship and went over to the four new restaurants in the new wing that had recently opened at Tysons.  It is now the largest shopping center in the DC Metro area.  And the new wing is a beauty: movie theatres (finally!), four new restaurants (including an outpost of Iron Chef's Morimoto "casual line"), some great new shops (West Elm!), and a third(!) food court for the mall (including a Cold Stone Creamery).

It really does look wonderful, and at 9:30 Saturday night, the place was hopping!  However, I have to wonder how crazy it's going to get during the height of holiday shopping season - especially the car traffic in and out of the shopping center.  Even on Saturday night, the timing of the lights off the main road into the shopping center were not timed with the traffic lights that were in(!) the shopping center.   Lots of near accidents already.  But at least they added a new five-level parking deck.

;-\

And has any DR been to one of those Ruehl stores? Apparently, they're one of the new premium jeans companies.  The store is very interesting.  First of all, the facade looks like a brick townhouse - right in the mall! - complete with a cast iron fence and windows.  Then once you walk inside, the dimly lit rooms make it seem that you are in some expensive home.  All the rooms are painted black, and there's even artwork stacked along the central hallway. There's even a fireplace and a lounge with a big couch where you can rest for a while.

...And I just checked out their website... besides a very provocative picture and store listing, there doesn't seem to be any other information.  -At least I can't find anything to click on to bring me to another page.

I am sure that Jane will consider this story to be a sign from above.  After work, I stopped by the supermarket, bravely fighting my way through all of the Thanksgiving shoppers.  When I got home, I turned into the driveway, but half way up the hill I had to stop.  Standing in the middle of the driveway, glaring at me, was a huge "live" turkey.  I flashed my lights, I honked the horn, I rattled the bag of stuffing -- Nothing!  It continued to advance on my car.  Finally I backed out into the street and went up the back way.  After I parked my car, I went over to the driveway where the turkey was still standing guard, this time blocking one of my neighbors from leaving the complex.  My neighbor said that the damn bird had been wandering around all day and that she had already called the Humane Society.  They told her that a turkey is a wild bird, and they could do nothing about it.  I went in the house and called the Zoo, which is only a block and a half from my house.  According to the Zoo, they were aware of the bird, it didn't belong to them, and they didn't plan to do anything about it.

I think I may eat nothing but salad on Thursday.

LOL What a wonderful story!!! We have wild turkeys around Sioux City, but I've never had one in my driveway....

TCB I am so happy.  Good for that turkey. :D

Keith asked if it was a male turkey as they are more aggressive.  We haven’t had a problem with ours even when Keith is chasing them away.  ;D

Jane, I hate to sound like a city slicker, but I wouldn't know a male turkey from a female, even if we do have the same name.

And you can tell Keith, that you don't know fear until you find yourself paying respects in a cemetery at dusk, and suddenly realize that you are not only the only person left in the entire cemetery, but that there is a full grown wolf standing between you and your car.  That is fear!

I have up to fifty wild turkeys in the back yard during the fall and winter. . .still, we eat turkey, still we sometimes have a shot of Wild Turkey. . .Thursday will be no different, I'm sure.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who found SHAUN OF THE DEAD to be so funny. . . .

I believe I raved about the film when I sw it in the theatre last (?) year.  I loved "we're coming to get you, Barbara!"

Back from a great dinner at Barrymore's and three special friends who made the event such a great time.  Reputations were made and dashed, HHW members were dragged over coals and then raked across them again, a good time was had by all.  Ears should be burning all over the globe.

TOD I don't really remember the first time I left town. When you live in a small town, you leave it a lot.  We lived 15 miles from a lake resort area and were there a lot in the summers.  My grandparents and other extended family all lived near Des Moines, so we went there a  lot too.

The first family vacation I remember was to Cool Ridge Resort near Park Rapids, MN.  I was too young to do most of the activities, which really bummed me out.  That's what I remember most, watching my sister and brother have fun and being told I was too young....the story of my life!

The other family vacation I remember was when I was 7.  We went to the Black Hills and Yellowstone.  I was supposed to get my toncils out, but the doctor decided I didn't have to do it then and they took me on the trip.  It was actually a lot of fun.  I did have my toncils out, but not until I was 33!

I am happy to report that Hildy is eating much better now, and no sign of any vomiting!!

My mom will be meeting Hildy tomorrow night as my sister informs me that she invited her up for Thanksgiving...but no she and my brother-in-law are unable to drive down and get her! So I will be driving down to Sutherlin, where ever the heck that is, and getting her...my brother Dan is taking her up as far as that town...we will meet at the Sutherlin McDonald's.

I expect it to be around a 4 hour trip...not exactly what I wanted to do after  getting off of work.

My sister also informed me that they have no idea how mom is going to get back home. Mom also has no idea.

I told them not to look at me. They invited her up, they can make the arrangements for sending her back...or else she can just move in with them!  ;)

I hope that post didn't sound harsh. It isn't my mom's fault. She was just as happy to spend Thanksgiving in Medford with her other kids....but my sister got a wild hair and didn't really plan things out very well (Sis and bro-in-law thought they would be in their new house by this time...but there were delays and now they are actually moving in tomorrow...which is why they need me to go pick up mom and have her stay with me for a few nights).

Well, on my way to see Bingo tonight, I almost stopped in to say hi to the people at Barrymore's... but I had one of those times when I could not, if you held a gun to my head, figure out what to do about dinner.  It took me 30 minutes to get up off my chair at the casting office and get on a bus, then I overshot my stop by 11 blocks because of stupid chess on my cell phone, then I walked down to 46th in the rain, trying to figure out what to eat; then I thought, well, I'll just stop in at Barrymore's and say hi and maybe eat someone else's leftovers ( ;) ), but then it was already 7:30 and I thought I'd better find some food.  So then I spent another fifteen minutes walking up and down 8th looking for something fast and cheap (insert joke here), and finally settled on a piece of pizza, which was good but turned out to be a HUGE mistake when I got home and calculated how many Weight Watchers points it is.  And that was probably the longest couple of run-on sentences I've ever written.

So it was kind of a disastrous day; but, to add to the weight loss total on this board, I'm down a total of 15 lbs as of last Tuesday.  Another weigh-in tomorrow.  Please send skinny vibes.

Jose, JR, congrats on your weight loss!  I'm up for a race!

Well, I'll have to say that MEDIUM was a lot of fun. The first two 3-D effects were the most effective, I thought, but all were fun.

In a way, I just wish the whole show had been 3-D since putting on and taking off the glasses was a slight inconvenience.

Don't know how the effects looked for others, but in high definition and with a widescreen, quite a few objects did really come jutting right out into my face. Probably the most effective home 3-D I've ever experienced.

I thought the 3-D glasses were much ado about little.  I enjoyed the episode, but since the show is doing well, I don't understand the need to add an unnecessary gimmick.  I found them a waste of time and energy.

While I'm griping about NBC:  I hate their new method of reducing the credits to an illegible blurb at the bottom of the screen to give them a larger preview space.  By the time I figure out the credits are running, I've missed the damned things.

Congrats everyone on your weight loss. I think I found it. I have finally given in and gotten the fat pants out of the box in the basement.  I will diet after the holidays when I know I have the smoking thing whipped.   I still dream I'm smoking, but don't want one during the day. Prior to that fun MEDIUM episode, I finished HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS. As always, enjoyed seeing one of Richard Harris' last performances, and the fiercesome snake in the chamber is very eeffective. I'll be looking for similar or worse looking monsters at HARRY POTTER tomorrow.

The sound design for CHAMBER (Dolby 5.1 EX) was terrific as always.

The true test of my ability to stay smoke free will be going home for Thanksgiving.  My neice and brother smoke, but I don't think it should be a problem.   Less then half the family will be there, so it should be half the family stress.....but I think I'm dreaming

Well I'm off to get some sleep. One judge wants to leave tomorrow afternoon and one prosecutor wants to leave early, so I have to start my hearings at 8:30 am.   That's cool though, I'll be done with court by noon. It's really hard to work when everyone has left for the holiday.  I'm considering taking a novel and reading it there.   I've never done that before, but for the next 2 days it is very tempting

MEDIUM is doing well, it's true, but this is sweeps month, a time when the networks do everything they can to increase audiences for their popular shows so they can charge more ad dollars from their advertisers the next times rates are determined.

All decisions like this are always money-based.

Speaking of dreams... The past couple of nights, I've been having some scary dreams - well, sort of scary.  Well, at least sort of violent.  I remember "dreaming" some horror movie - people getting killed in various ways - but I could tell it was a movie.  And then just some other scary things.  I have no idea what the trigger is.  However, I have been waking up in the middle of night because of them.  Thankfully, it's been easy to get back to sleep, and I haven't been creeped out by them like I sometimes get.  Just so strange.  Maybe it's the lack of sugar in my system?

;)

DR Joy - I've had that "where and what do I want to eat" problem many a time.  And it usually happens when I'm really hungry.  ???

They're not free, but they're darn cute!  And a great way to clean your computer screen!  ;)

I know I made a roadtrip to Texas with my mother and uncle when I was just 1-1/2 years old or so, but of course only know it's  true due to photos.  Earliest trips I do remember would be visiting my aunt's house in Seattle, and every couple years making the trek down to DR Jane's neck of the woods to visit my great-grandparents in Jacksonville, Oregon.

We did not have a car when I was pre School age.  I do remember going for trips with family friends - back in the days when cars had running boards and after a journey of an hour or so it was time to stop and have a cup of tea!  I suffered from travel sickness and hated going on winding roads!

Well, I'll have to say that MEDIUM was a lot of fun. The first two 3-D effects were the most effective, I thought, but all were fun.

Don't know how the effects looked for others, but in high definition and with a widescreen, quite a few objects did really come jutting right out into my face. Probably the most effective home 3-D I've ever experienced.

I didn't get the official TV Guide 3-D glasses, but my sister and niece had them...actually, I got the glasses for them after going to three different grocery stores.  The first two stores were out of the TV Guides altogether and at the third, I picked up a copy that didn't have the glasses!  They were stolen!  How rude! :P

I have a pair of the red-blue glasses that I've had for several years and they were good enough for me.  The 3-D technology that uses the clear/dark glasses is much better, but I had heard that it's more expensive to produce.  Oh, well.

The episode itself was very good.  I had no idea where it was going until they spelled it out.  For a while, I thought that the episode was going to go in a certain direction (plot-wise), but it didn't.

As for family vacations (the official Topic of the Day), I don't really remember us going any places until after we moved to Washington in 1976 (I was 10 years old, by then), but I also can't specifically remember what our first trip might have been.  When we moved here, we went trailer camping quite a bit...at the beach, in state parks, but not "real" camping.  If it didn't have a bathroom and easy access to stores, we didn't go.  We didn't know how to do it and my sister and I, at our young ages (then), didn't want to.  So we didn't.
