Well, you've read the notes, the notes have inspired you to be inspired, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently on a crash diet, having eaten way too much pumpking pie.

And tonight's viewing was Brazilian film "City Of God"

Good morning, all!  Last night my reading lamp died died, and I have to buy a new one this morning.  It will be a frustrating search, but I'll probably end up, as the last time, ordering something nice and using a cheap facsimile until the order arrives.

The housecleaning continues before former intern Dylan arrives, and since he's a film studies major, I'll let him decide what he wants to watch this weekend.  I think THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER is pretty definite.

CD:  The Last Starfighter, Braunfels' DIE VOGEL, perhaps some holiday music.

VCR:  Cleaned out till monday

Good Morning!

I'm up!  I'm up!

...And I should be in the midst of my workout right now, but...

-Actually, I strained my lower back earlier in the week while working out, so I'm a little wary to do anything strenuous right now.  I'm gonna let myself wake up a bit more before doing anything today - I think I was just a little too "right out of bed" when I worked out Monday morning...  And Tuesday morning.

In the meantime...

I did check out the sales on Apple.com, and there aren't any real great bargains.  And the "special" on the iPod consists of Free Laser Engraving and Free Shipping.  And according to the retail store link, that's the same special if you go into an actual Apple Store.  However, the iSight cameras are on sale, and the .mac membership is discounted too.  So... We'll see.

CDs: Last Starfighter and an Elton John two-disc collection.

DVDs: War of the Worlds is on the shelf: I want to see Tom Cruse teaching Dakota Fanning how to jump up and down on a couch.  Der B gave the grandlads Polar Express, hopefully we'll be finding the version with all the extras for ourselves.

Books: The Perfectionist: Life and Death in Haute Cuisine, by Rudolph Chelminski.  In the Devil's Garden: A Sinful History of Forbidden Food, by Stewart Lee Allen.  And Bistro Cooking at Home, by Gordon Hamersley.  (Consistant, ain't I!   8))

THE LISTENING POST:
Susan Egan - Coffee House
Joe Nichols - Revelations
Cat Stevens - Teaser and Firecat
Original Soundtracks - STATE FAIR - didn't our esteemed host have something to do with this recording being released?

Well I am back home. Had a wonderful time in NYC.

Went to the airport early hopefully I could change my flight to an earlier. I did but we got to the runway and the airport was shutdown due to wind shear. No planes landing. No planes taking off. We finally did take off and got home around 1:30am. The plane that I would have taken wasn't due to land to 1:30am.

Well I did so much walking in NYC that I have many blisters. But I look at them as war wounds. The only other negative was that my right leg is swollen  from the knee down due to my pre-diabetes.

MY THANKSGIVING:

I spent the day working at the store.  It was busy enough through the day, with some lag times.  Most customers were there to find one or two items (and often found more, of course), but there were plenty who had carts filled with their groceries.

One of this year's deals was a fully cooked turkey and the "fixings", all prepared and boxed.  These were bought by customers who had pre-ordered their goodies.  The florist was quite busy as well, of course.  And the bakery had plenty of pies sold over the last few days.

What were the customers like?  Most of them were cheerful, happy to find us open.  Some pitied me for "having" to work on the holiday; I just told them I was enjoying myself, and that it was a lot better than my stepdaughter's cooking.  (When in doubt, always pick on the stepdaughter's cooking; everyone understands.)  There were a few who were determined to grumble, but not many.

And there was the mother/daughter combo who argued about sour cream.

M: All you need in your mashed potatoes is some milk, you don't need anything else!

D: Well, I always put sour cream in my mashed potatoes!

M: Well, that's why you're so fat!

(Of course, Mom was just as hefty.)

All and all, I had a good time yesterday.  Definately one of the more memorable Thanksgivings I've had.

Certainly more memorable than it would have been at the stepdaughter's table.   ::)

I saw several shows and movies while I was in NYC. I haven't seen three movies in one week in a very long time. They were three very different movies and I enjoyed them all very much.

Capote. A wonderful portrait of a complex man with a wonderful performance by Philip Seymore Hoffman.

Harry Potter. I had not read the book so I didn't miss what wasn't in the film. I think I liked this film the best of the lot.

Chicken Little (don't laugh) in its digital 3-d showing. I enjoyed it. The voice work was very good and not overly done with familar celebrity voices. There was also enough humor for the adults that I am sure went over the head of the kiddies.

Good morning!

We have a sunny but cold morning here, and with temps not supposed to get out of the 40s today, I'll be staying inside for most of the day. I do want to pop by the grocery store for a few items (including frozen yogurt) but otherwise should have a good inside day today.

If I get all the DVDs today that are expected to arrive (and I doubt I will since this is the first day after a postal holiday; those days are usually notoriously light on packages), I am going to have some major decisions on my hands about what to watch.

I do want to see Streisand's BELLE OF 14TH STREET from her TV specials boxed set, and I may also put in COLOR ME BARBRA, always my favorite of her specials.

I will have the Spielberg WAR OF THE WORLDS and THE POLAR EXPRESS today, too, I suspect, but I suppose I'll put on the former first.

So, with all of this up in the air, I'll just hold off on my Friday Media Check until after the mail comes.

DR Michael S, I'm glad you also liked CAPOTE. I found Hoffman's ability to mold himself to Capote's manner and physicality very astonishing, and the story of the writing of IN COLD BLOOD was gripping to me.

Critics often say that portraying writers on the screen is dull and movies don't usually do it well, but this movie certainly knew how to do it to make it fascinating from beginning to end. Of course, it helps if you have a very colorful personality as your writer to sart with.

Theater in reverse order.

Wednesday: 2 shows.

Evening: A Broadway Diva's Christmas where two of the four divas were out. Ellen Green was out with bronchictis (sp?) which is acceptable I guess, the other Maria Schnable (Jane Eyre) was still out on tour somewhere. This was not acceptable. They should not have advertised here as being one of the divas. The latter was told with an insert in the program, but Ellen Green's absence was never announced and only realized in as the show went on and no Ellen Green. I found out the reasons for their no shows after the show.

HOWEVER There was a highlight. Christine Pedi of Forbidden Broadway and Forbidden Hollywood fame did the 12 days of Christmas in different diva voices. Two of the back up singers went into the audience with index and audience members (including moi) chose cards with names on them and she then proceeded to do the song in those voices and with their body gestures.

Eartha Kitt
Julie Andrews
Liza Minnelli
Barbara Streisand (my card)
Judy Garland
Ethel Merman
Joan Rivers (Ok not really a diva)
Angela Lansbury (The first time I heard anyone do her. Pedi was very good)
Bernadette Peters (susan egan also does a wicked version of her)
Carol Channing

and the other name escapes me.

Then did them in reverse order all together for the final.

Wednesday Matinee.

Souvenir withe devine Judy Kaye. A very funny comedy and Judy Kaye was a stand out in her role. I scored a fourth row center ticket at TkTS. The Lyceum is a large theater with TWO balconies. I know they can't fill the theater, but I hope that  word of mouth will get people into the seats. It is what a trip to theater is all about. The audience loved it. Laughing and applauding. Judy's co-star was equally good and it is his character that we see the story onfold. It takes a talent like Judy Kaye to sing as bad as that. The stories end on a high note (no pun intended) for Judy and her character.

After the show I went backstage and chatted for a few minutes. Judy read Benjamin Kritzer and loved it. I told her about the other books and she said that she would get the other books. Also told her about the new record label.

Bruce, Judy sends her love.

I recommend the show to one and all. I hope it runs at least till Tony time.

No shows on Monday or Tuesday as I went to dinner with friends. Barrymore's was wonderful and sorry that I never went to it before. I went to Carmine's. I went to their restaurant uptown. It is a family style Italy restaurant. The food was great and you need to go with at least four people!

Anyone watch The Macy Thanksgiving's Day Parade on TV?

I saw it in person (Not gloating) but I have a  question.

Right before Santa arrived there were a group a women dressed up as christmas trees dancing while pushing shopping carts and walkers.

I was wondering was the musical audible on the tv broadcast.

The reason I ask is that they were using Bruce Kimmel's recording of BE A SANTA from A Broadway Christmas. I only heard Michelle's portion of the song.

DR MBarnum - 25 years ago this holiday season soon-to-be DH Richard and I took his nieces to see The Nutcracker at Cincinnati's Music Hall (one of them is now the mom of the great-nephew who visited us yesterday).  By the end of the performance one was sitting on my lap and the other was sitting on Richard's.  The woman behind us complimented us on how well-behaved our daughters were.  Since it was about a month before we were to get married, I just said, "Oh, thank you!"

May we see a photo of Taylor in the frock Uncle Mike bought?

Okay, so I loved the book, and here's the amazon review, which finally appeared this morning!!

 Whatta Ride!, November 25, 2005
Reviewer:   PennyO (Kula, Maui) - See all my reviews
Oh, BOY!! From the giddy-up - and I emphasize "giddy" - this story grabs ya and takes you on the monster roller-coaster, whirling teacups, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and then some. A tight, fast (we're talking white-knuckle fast) blitz of a story, in the multiple-personality first-person. I guessed part of it about halfway through - because of the vicarious thrill of doing in those whose goose I never got to cook... 'Tis said that Revenge is a dish best served cold... Well, for anyone who ever felt majorly WRONGED, and had the tenacity to hold a grudge beyond death, which I suspect is a goodly number of yuz, this gourmet concoction is WAY delicious.

Well, I spent a large portion of the afternoon with Ms. Barbra Streisand in two TV specials: BELLE OF 14TH STREET and COLOR ME BARBRA.

First off, whoever mastered the original videotapes to DVD used the entire image all the way to the edges meaning that on the left side of the picture, I see video image artifacting not meant to be seen when I watch the 4:3 picture on a 16:9 TV. When I expanded the picture to fill the screen, the edges get lopped off, of course, and then the offending artifact isn't there. I'm thinking on a regular TV, the normal overscan would obscure this stuff, but when you're seeing everything possible to see, the lines running down the left side are definitely there.

That said, it's easy to see why BELLE OF 14TH STREET didn't make a big hit. Jason Robards can barely carry a tune, and he sings a fair amount in the first vaudeville sequences. As a tribute to vaudeville, complete with a (too) lengthy excerpt from THE TEMPEST, I can imagine the at home TV audience just would have gotten bored with it before it was half over. Naturally, they'd miss the concert sequence at the close which is the best thing about it. (Barbra also sings an entire number  - "Liebestraum" - in her head voice, stronger than I ever would have thought possible, even for a singer with her unique talent.)

COLOR ME BARBRA was as wonderful as always. And the DVDs are given three possible soundtrack choices: original mono, 2.0 stereo, and Dolby 5.1.

I'll watch MY NAME IS BARBRA and ...OTHER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS at other points over the weekend.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon thus far watching another American Masters PBS special, this one on LUCILLE BALL.

Dissecting her talent in her various Lucy shows, the documentary was very entertaining. But it mentioned nothing about WILDCAT. Nothing about the handful of films she made after her LUCY success including one huge hit (YOURS, MINE, AND OURS) and one huge flop (MAME).

Another big surprise: when I went to the grocery store today around noon, I expected it to be packed. Nope! It was almost empty. I guess folks were doing shopping of a different kind. I was in and out in two minutes and got a space almost right at the front of the packing lot.

I was out for a while this morning.  Moderate traffic everywhere, nothing major (last night, however, there were huge traffic jams on the freeways as late as 10:30 p.m.).

I went to a large Safeway to shop (my local one is ALWAYS out of some things I regularly buy).  Had a good time...found some great stuff...I have my pork loin cooking right now.  And I've some Brunswick stew heating on the stove for my lunch.

"City Of God" was an amazing film. The DVD EXtra was fascinating and gave much food for thought re the connection between guns and drugs and so much more. A whole new world and a different way of seeing and understanding the poverty traps.

I'm now looking forward to seeing what the Director does with "The Constant Gardener".  I guess the public will see the plot and characters as being ponderous ! Just as the public didn't "get" "the Shipping News" either.

Evening folks!

DR Michael S, I am so glad you had such a good time in NYC!

Knock, Knock.

Who’s there?

Boo!

Boo Who?

Well, you don’t have to cry about it!

Remember when I said that didn’t want to go out and brave the crowds?  Well, that was me talking, not my Mother.  She decided that she wanted a real Christmas tree this year.  She couldn’t wait until tomorrow.  She wanted it today.

We can’t handle one of those big trees but we could get one of those “table top” type of trees.  So off we went to the different tree sellers.  We finely found the perfect tree at Lowes.

Then she wanted new lights—our old lights might (note the operative word there is “might”) not be good.  So we had to battle our way through Walmart to get new lights.  Then a new tree skirt, then tinsel, then a new Angel for the top of the tree, etc, etc.

I kept saying we should wait until I could get the chance to pull the box of Christmas things to go though them to see what we had before getting all new stuff but ahhh well.

And when we got the tree home, I had to cut a couple of inches off the bottom and it is now soaking in a bucket of water with special chemicals to make it last longer.

I'll put it up on Sunday.  That will give me time to pull all of our Christmas things out of the shed and see what is what.

So much for my nice, quiet day at home.   :D

Thanksgiving was loud and obnoxious, but one of those family things one must endure.  Today, the DP and I made our own Thanksgiving dinner and it was lovely.  I saw "Rent" - thought it was a vast improvement over the stage production in a good way.  It works through sung on stage but I feared it wouldn't on the screen and the dialogue made all the difference.  I cried at the end.

First up was Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS.

I liked it very much. Very well done, suspenseful, thoroughly enjoyable.

The DTS sound on my system was SO deeply powerful that I could honestly feel the cooler air rushing out from the speakers toward me whenever the tripods made their presences known. One of the most awe-inspiring sound designs ever on a DVD and surely reference material for those who want to show off the sound on their surround systems.

spoiler

I did have one part of the film that I did not particularly think was necessary or very good - when Cruise himself deliberately got the tripod to snatch him up and put him onboard the ship. I really did not like this sequence aboard the ship; it took me right out the movie that I had been enjoying and in a weird sort of way spoiled my suspension of disbelief. This entire sequence just did not ring true to me at all.

Then I put in the newly refurbished KING KONG. Yes, they have done a masterful job cleaning the movie up as much as they could. Is it going to look as clean as a new movie? Never. But compared to the KONG Criterion laserdisc I have, this DVD looks worlds better.

I'd like to see all three major documentaries in this 2-disc package, but my eyes got just too heavy to look at any of them.

Found a NY Times interview with BK  and a review of the original release of the Creature Isn't Nice and Starlog and Cinefantasique articles on the film. There was also a French translated version of the article.

Interesting fact: The Creature Wasn't Nice was an hour longer before the final edit.

Hi all, reporting in from my father's bedroom.....my lap top is officially not worth a thing and this is the only computer in the house.

I had a very nice and filling Thanksgiving.  Turkey, potatoes(whipped with sour cream and cream cheese then baked again), sweet potatoes with brown sugar/cinnamon and marshmallows, stuffing, dressing, scalloped oysters, scalloped corn, orange/coconut fruit salad, and I'm not sure what else. Pumpkin pie  and copcolate pecan, but we didn't get to it.

I took my niece to RENT, after dinner. I'll talk about it more tomorrow, both of my parents are in here wanting me to look at photos from my nephew's wedding.....more tomorrow...

Well, yes, if one added up all the raw footage in the assemblage, Creature would have been an hour longer - but that's just assebled footage and no one in their right mind would want to see it that way.  My cut of the film runs around eighty-eight minutes - not sure about the "official" cut.

Sailors was supposed to follow Nudie, and we were very close to making it, and Saul Chaplin was even going to work on it at one point (I played him the songs on Bronislau Kaper's piano - don't remember why we met at Mr. Kaper's house).  Howard of the Jungle was just an idea I had - I don't think I ever did more than a page or two on it.  The one that really went quite far but didn't get made was called The Seventh Voyage of Howard - we even had Bill Stout do conceptual drawings for the creatures, and it was a pretty funny script.  Golan-Globus was very interested in it for quite a while.

Funny what you remember when your memory is jogged.  I started thinking about the scripts, the unproduced ones.  I wrote an omnibus film (three stories) called Scare Me - it would have been pretty good, I think - however, the first of the stories has become a short story in my short story collection that I've been working on.  I wrote a script called The Horror, which was based on a novel by Thomas Monteleone (novel had a different title) - it was really good, and I remember there being some interest at the time.  It was brought to me by Mark Haggard, who'd optioned the book and had a script written that was just awful.  I did major work on it but alas, nada.  I did a rewrite of a film called...  hmmm... oh, yes, Rotate.  It was a girls' volleyball picture, and, again, it had a really good idea and a really bad script.  The producer was Lou Arkoff, son of Sam Z.  It was very funny when I got through with it, and had they made it it would have been a hit, I think.  My favorite gag was the dean of the college's name - subsequently stolen by Mr. Dangerfield, I believe for one of his movies (and no, I'm not being paranoid, I was told that the company that made that film had absolutely read my script and just pilfered the gag) - I named the character of the dean, Dean Martin, and it was a very amusing running gag throughout the script.   I've also done dialogue polishes on a few scripts.

Thanks for the link.

But why the alternate take??

From what I remember reading (I don't remember where) Barbra never liked the other version, and they were finally able to track down footage from the afternoon's dress rehearsal.  I have tried to figure out where I got that bit of information, but I haven't had any luck.  (Maybe Barbra e-mailed me the story)

I think that there is a muffed lyric on the videotape take.

Loved PennyO's review of Rewind on amazon (and posted here earlier).

Well, I must do the Wussburger.  I have to go into work for a few hours and I want to get an early start.

That is a very nice review, BK.  Good job, PennyO!

Hope everyone had a real good day after! ;D

Since a lot of hainsies/kimlets are MIA, we won't really know whether they had a good Thanksgiving, a good day after, or anything until they decide to return their errant and truant butt cheeks back to this here site.

A belated Happy Thanksgiving from DB Jed and myself.  I've enjoyed reading all the Thanksgiving stories, particularly the yummylicious descriptions of food.
Jed and I had a marvelous time at his aunt and uncle's house up in Edmonds (about 20 min above Seattle)  With all his extended family, we were 16 people strong at the table.  His aunt Nancy put forth an incredible feast, the highlight of which was the turkey itself.  Apparently she soaked it in a brine for 4 days prior to roasting.  The result was a tender, flavorful, moist, perfectly cooked bird..yummy!  All the side dishes were great as well...sweet potatoes and green beans were highlights for me.  She made the beans with some sort of a garlic butter thing that was amazing.  After we'd allowed the meal to settle, we ate pumpkin and apple pie, both excellent.

A personal highlight of the evening came right as everyone was finishing with dinner.  Aunt Nancy, out of the clear blue, passed out sheets with Christmas Carol lyrics on them and announced that we were starting a new tradition.  This announcment was greeted with more than one dubious look from around the table.  Her teenaged daughters and the men in attendance looked particularly skeptical.  But she had that look in her eye that told us all that arguing was futile, and since she'd been kind enough to make us such a wonderful feast, we oblidged her.  It was rather comical, I thought.  With no one comfortable at the piano, we just did them a capella.  Jed and I banded together to pick a key, and thankfully most people followed us.

All in all, it was a great time...and I think I made a decent impression on the family.  It's always interesting to see families for the first time in large holiday situations.  I'd met most of them prior to yesterday, but since no one new has attended Thanksgiving dinner since Jed's uncle Kevin brought Nancy around...well, I wasn't surprised to be under some scrutiny.  But Jed tells me I passed the test...yay.

Today we braved the crowds to go out and get some tools to hang Christmas lights.  We couldn't resist a peek at Circuit City, where we stood and drooled over a plasma TV...the picture is truly incredible!  Poor Jed got a headache after awhile, but we finally found what we came for, so it was a successful trip.  Tomorrow I shall venture out to get another string of lights, and then the apartment will be properly decked out for the season.

There, I'm caught up on the posts, and you all are caught up on us :)

And I've started page 6...but I won't dance...no one around to see it.
